I drink water at work, so I (lie to myself and) consider filling my bottle up "washing it." I throw it in the dishwasher at home on the weekends.

If it were an actual non-disposable coffee cup, I'd wash it daily.

my office has a rule that at the end of the day someone collects up and washes out all the cups (it's usually one of the post-docs, though, not me).

I take milk in my coffee and I feel like day-old milk should be washed out before using.

If I didn't use milk maybe I wouldn't. I am pretty lazy.

We have someone in our office who is a very keen coffee/tea maker and always takes the dirty cups away with her. I think she likes to get out of the office and I feel guilty but I'm too busy posting on ilx to do anything about it.

I don't use any milk/dairy or even sugar, and I never ever wash my favored mug unless I go on a trip leaving like 5mm in the bottom of the cup and it's grown mold when I return.

Plus I only drink tea now and my favorite mug is white so there is no way to make it look unstained anyway.

I bet she carefully scrapes it out and is collecting cup-scum. She's going to be found dead under a 600-lb. mound of it in a couple of years.

At the office I am unable to practice my preferred patina-growing bcuz the office assistant grabs them all after we leave and puts them in the washer.

i guess cos i'm used to using coffee grounds as fertiliser i tend to think of coffee dregs as basically proto-compost, so this is a bit wtf to me.

No power on earth could induce me to drink the coffee at my place of employment.

Most days at work I drink water instead of tea/coffee, so when I do have a hot drink I wash the mug towards the end of the day. There's a point between half 3 and 4 where I generally feel like my head's going to implode if I sit in the office any longer, so it's a good excuse to go and do something else.

Water bottle gets v quick rinse before use and proper wash once a week.

Every time I use it. Got to do something while the kettle's boiling, haven't you? (British)

I have one of these Not A Paper Cup mugs. I rinse the lid off when it's noticably slimy/crusty and maybe rinse the cup out once a week. I've taken it home to wash it two or three times in the past 18 months. Only drink black tea out of it though, no milk/sugar.

I drink tea and have a tendency to just leave the bag in, so I always have to at least rinse out the mug the next day, if not actually wash it (to extract any bits of tea bag that get stuck to the bottom). I have a separate cup for water, which I never wash.

This chat reminds me of a place where I used to work. A guy went down with a suspected case of Legionnaires Disease. His GP informed the Health Protection Agency who sent inspectors to place of work. It was decided that the guy's bacterial infection probably came directly from the plastic water bottle that he refilled, which was never washed out over a period of at least a year. The guy used the same bottle for over a year! Crazy.

Coffee Cup, once a day, at the end. (Though maybe I'll rinse it with only water before select refills) But frequently if my wife sees I've left it somewhere (like, say, on the kitchen table) and I'm not using it that second, she puts it in the sink to be washed. This has led to a couple disagreements, but I'm pretty sure we've got it sorted out now.

I hate tannin stains in mugs.

I wash every time cuz I use enormous piles of sugar and it gets kinda cakey at the bottom. My non-tea drinking receptacles, though, get washed only if I find that leftover liquids have stuff growing on them.

One time after weeks of using the same water bottle I decided to give it a proper rinse rather than just casually fill it up as I had been doing previously, and with the water skooshing out the top also came a big grey webby lump of something. I was not in a good moment following that.

At my last proper job I had a mug that I never, ever washed, per se (coffee, black), but did rinse with the near-boiling water that came out of the tap. Every once in awhile the very sweet Romanian lady I worked with would wash it, and mildly scold me for not washing it, but she'd soon move on to asking me why I wasn't married yet.

oh, I am so disgusting that I didn't even think of the distinction between rinsing to the extent that there's nothing stuck on it and properly washing.

There is no dishwasher or kitchen of any sort in my office, so that can complicate things sometimes. I usually manage to wash my cup once a day in the bathroom when I was my fork and/or spoon, but erry once in awhile if I am being megalazy I will just put a little bit of hot water in the cup from the hot water tap of the water... cooler... and wipe out the coffee/tea residue with a napkin. I usually take my water bottle home on Fridays so I can run it through the dishwasher.

It is handy and I recommend it for those of you who do not have kitchens or dishwashers at your place of employment.

I've had the same work mug since 1993! I wash my cup before pouring every new coffee. I don't make a lot of coffee - I tend to be stupid and pay for coffee at the coffee shop on the way to work.

we have company cups so I don't have "my own" or anything. and we use a dishwasher. so basically it gets washed with every use

Man, I miss the kitchen at my old job. The bathrooms here are fucking vile and it is kind of gross to wash dishes in the bathroom sinks. A lot of my coworkers wash their dishes in the janitorial mop sink right outside our bathroom, but I don't really see that as a superior option.

Now if you will excuse me, I am going to go turn the light switch off and on 17 times. And wash my hands.

any container that held anything other than water gets washed after use. water containers get rinsed out daily and a good washing every 2 weeksish.

this is the opposite of my roommate, who will put a measuring cup that only held water into the dishwasher. actually said something yesterday about the whole "more stuff you wash=more water and heat you use=worse for the environment" equation. his response was "yeah but you have to run the dishwasher a lot anyway, or stuff will cake on and not come clean." WHATEVER JUST SAY YOU'RE A CLEAN FREAK

there are two factors that influence cup washing for me. the first is the dust that settles in the bottom, it's no problem if I drink out of it every day but I'll wash it after I come back from the weekend.

the second is the layer of scummy dried up mucus that builds up at the rim of the cup, how do you deal with that w/o washing?

we have a cupboard full of mugs and a dishwasher in the kitchen so i just put the cup in at the end of the day. i am very attached to my water glass (one i brought from home because i love it) and keep that at my desk so i usually just wash it out every morning when i go to get water.

have a hot-desk policy at work and haven't been given a locker yet (after 10 months) but generally it's once at the end of the day.

We have a mountain of cups for all in the tea room, no one uses their "own" cup per se, and I just chuck mine in the dishwasher of wash it and put it in the drainer when Im done and then grab a fresh cup later if need be.

Oh but I leave used tissues lying around on my desk so I am a slob.

A place I used to work, this matronly older lady went ballistic at me one day for leaving a half-empty cup of tea and a small pile of tissues on my desk for a few days, chiding me for being dirty. She also bitched at me because my coat smelled strongly of cig smoke (I didnt smoke but my bf of the time did, heavily) and I was NOT allowed to hang my coat up with everyone elses in the wardrobe because it was foul and disgusting.

She was so effing annoying.

i drink lotsa tea with half-and-half, so when all of the residue therefrom gets a little gross the cup gets a good scrub. it does wonders for my teeth, too (yikes!)

I guess it depends on what you used it for.

I mean, if you're using a little bit of the tissue, I guess it makes sense to hang on to it, but if you haven't finished it out by the end of the day, pitch it. Or get some hankies for the little jobs.

yeh dyao knows where its at - I might only do one nose-blow and there's still plenty of useable tissue so it'll hang around for a while. At home, I just leave em lying around because I am a grot. I do try to tidy up though :/

Well I guess that I'd forgotten about one of those cups once and left it sitting on the corner of my desk for a while. One afternoon I was doing a big clean and went to grab the mug and found a very large and very fucking DEAD MOUSE in the cup. I screamed and embarrassingly girlie scream and made my boss come dispose of the damn thing. I never left work without washing a cup again.

In my previous place of employment there was a general order to never wash out the boss's mug. Word round the office was that this was so in the case of an emergency coffee shortage he could make a cup out of hot water and residue.

OK finding a dead mouse in a cup would freak me out too, I'm quite certain.

I think I'm struggling to comprehend the multi-use tissue because if I blow my nose in a tissue, I consider that used. There's just no way I can blow my nose into a little bit of a tissue. Maybe I am unusually snotty, or I am normally not snotty but when it rains it pours, so to speak. So I'm imagining that if you only use a little bit of a tissue it's because you politely coughed into it or genteelly dabbed the corners of your eyes after a hearty laugh at a capital witticism, both of which activities seem well suited to hankie application.

I don't know but i'm actually in bed with an iPad posting about other ppl's used tissues on ILX instead of reading a book or sleeping and that is kind of a new low for me.

i'm with you on the tissue procedure, Jen. usually i try to maximize usage/coverage so as to not leave much behind in the way of "useable tissue".

This reminds me of when I was a kid and I left a half-eaten packet of crisps in the car and when I found it again the next day a slug had crawled into it and died (mmm salty). That put me off crisps for a month or two. 'Course now I am a fattey and wd eat all the crisps so maybe I need a few more slugs to visit.

(Now I think about it I'm more worried about how slugs were getting into a locked car overnight but I'm going to assume there was a rust hole somewhere and it was a freak occurrence that I never need to worry about again, please)

my sinuses are built in such a way that I can have a blocked nose, and want to evacuate my sinuses, but only a little bit comes out - if I force the issue my ears will painfully pop. hence, I often nurse a tissue for a day or more.

I've always tucked a used-but-not finished tissue up my sleeve. I was brought up to understand that's what ladies do with their hankies. Gentlemen put them in their pockets. But usually, my tissues are used enough in one go to deserve the bin.

I use hankies! But for politely covering my mouth when emitting lady-like coughs and genteelly dabbing the corners of my eyes after a hearty guffaw and for blotting the perspiration off my brow after walking to the bus stop. Usually if I'm going to blow my nose, I'll use something disposable.
