How many posts does it take for anyone on ILX to take you seriously?

I mean really.

Let's see, I've got a little over 9,300 posts, so I'd say...at least 9,301 posts

fuck it, we're going to Olive Garden® (Z S), Thursday, 17 June 2010 02:42 (fifteen years ago)

One great rock post could change the world.

Mordy, Thursday, 17 June 2010 02:44 (fifteen years ago)

I dunno. How many posts would it take before you said something that's worthy of notice or response? That's just a start, but it's where you begin.

This post, for instance, seems to merit both notice and response, because you have provoked some of each. But in terms of substance it tends to portray you as someone whinging for more attention. Sure, almost anyone can get attention, but being taken seriously requires something worthy of it. No one here can stop you from doing that, but you. Go for it!

Aimless, Thursday, 17 June 2010 02:59 (fifteen years ago)

Three posts. One to screw in the lightbulb, the other two to take notes and exclaim, "Excelsior!"

WHERE did Sandy Denton get the audacity to leave the dressing room w (Stevie D), Thursday, 17 June 2010 03:09 (fifteen years ago)

xxxp

Well it's hard to say exactly why I started this. On the one hand I am frustrated and just want to talk to people and feel essentially ignored. I know it's not fashionable to be so frank about feeling angry, but there it is.

On the other hand I can't help but view this genuine anger in a funny light, hence the ironic/confrontational tone.

in most threads, especially clusterfucky ones, unless you're making salient points, saying something pretty nonsensical but still interesting, asking a question, or being a dick to people, the likelihood of no one saying anything about your post is high

ksh, Thursday, 17 June 2010 03:19 (fifteen years ago)

"salient points" varying wildly depending on the context, of course

May I highly recommend the slow, slow road where you *don't* try to get attention by zinging, being outrageous, or generally acting tactless? It may get you name recognition, but if I'm recognizing your name as "oh man here's that new guy who drives me nuts" then that is not a good thing. Not that I recognized you either way, corey, but I have my eye out now!

Thanks, Nath :)

I guess I'm not really much of a one for the big, rolling threads, or weighing in on all kinds of random stuff - my posting on ILE and ILM is usually just in response to seeing something pop up that relates to a topic I'm interested in which is mainly music, tv and film so plenty on the UK Mad Men thread etc. I also tend to ruminate on matters discussed and then post a few paragraphs, rather than ping-pong style, which am sure has kept my post count down too.

I'm no poll-daddy or New Questions type either, think I've only ever started one thread iirc (for Let The Right One In). There's definitely a few people here whose opinions I'll take on board and who I feel like I'm on a wavelength with, but I love the clusterfuckery and nonsense lol stuff as well. Am now going to make 2010 the year I break the 1K barrier, what a time to be alive!

darragh, I've barely even registered that a profile thingum exists - I do sometimes feel as though my use of ILX is hopelessly rudimentary. will update it today, by crikey.

awwww, I know.... Part of it is that I snatch a bit of ilx time during the day at work and would feel rude if I started chipping in loads and then being absent for like six hours. I know the paragraph style posting can often come across as verbose and po-faced - it's not meant to be though.

Anybody can write a short story - a bad one, I mean - who has industry and paper and time enough; but not every one may hope to write even a bad novel. It is the length that kills.

The accepted novelist may take his novel up and put it down, spend days upon it in vain, and write not any more than he makes haste to blot. Not so the beginner. Human nature has certain rights; instinct - the instinct of self-preservation forbids that any man (cheered and supported by the consciousness of no previous victory) should endure the miseries of unsuccessful literary toil beyond a period to be measured in weeks. There must be something for hope to feed upon. The beginner must have a slant of wind, a lucky vein must be running, he must be in one of those hours when the words come and the phrases balance of themselves - EVEN TO BEGIN. And having begun, what a dread looking forward is that until the book shall be accomplished! For so long a time, the slant is to continue unchanged, the vein to keep running, for so long a time you must keep at command the same quality of style: for so long a time your puppets are to be always vital, always consistent, always vigorous! I remember I used to look, in those days, upon every three-volume novel with a sort of veneration, as a feat - not possibly of literature - but at least of physical and moral endurance and the courage of Ajax.

I thought I was the only one feeling ignored/killing threads until now! On the most part that is. I got over it. I always thought to myself that if I started a "What does it take to not be ignored on ILX" thread nobody would post on it on purpose.

"Taken seriously" was poor phrasing. I really mean something more like "paid attention". But it's not that important.

Maybe the mods can just merge this with the "lonely" thread.

corey, Friday, 18 June 2010 04:49 (fifteen years ago)

My first thread was great but I was kind of confused when no other thread I started ever caught on. I had just assumed that after the first one I could just expect that kind of response on every thread. When every thread afterwards withered and died pathetically, or half of my posts aren't acknowledged, I can understand corey's frustration.

silently wonder no more, my good man...
hmmm - there used to be a thread about screen name origins but i can't seem to find it.

anyways... i was working on a website for a plastics company and the short form for the page that dealt with it's line of Thermoformed Thinwalled Containers was thermo_thinwall. i thought it made for a neat-o name. then i took a hiatus. in that 5 months i accomplished 90% of everything i've ever done in my life. then i came back and the site had gone weird for some reason and i needed to recreate my name (not knowing it would be forever permanent). i had also just watch a Mr Show skit called "Return of the Curse of the Creature's Ghost" and here we are.

In American, "coriander" refers to the seed and "cilantro" refers to the leafy herb tops. Not quite the same taste iirc.

In the UK, what you in the US call "cilantro" is called "coriander" - the leaves. In the US, "coriander" only refers to the seeds. In the UK they'd be called "corainder seeds" to make the distinction. No-one's saying the leaves and seeds taste the same; this was all discussed in great depth in the cilantro thread.

Read an article a few weeks ago about cilantro that was attempting to explain why people have such strong feelings against it. Apparently the leaves are coated with a substance that has similar chemical compounds to soap so the author suggested that perhaps people exposed to soap before cilantro would associate the herb with soap and in turn hate it. The soap-y substance could be a defense mechanism that functions in warding off insects?

I personally love both the leafy greens of cilantro and coriander seeds.

As for being recognized on message boards, meh.
