I'm at sónar but the draws have been out a day and no one started this? fuck the fucking world cup for making no one care about tennis.
Men's draw - http://www.wimbledon.org/en_GB/scores/draws/ms/Women's draw - http://www.wimbledon.org/en_GB/scores/draws/ws/
Rafa has such a bitch of a draw. It seriously couldn't be any harder. Nishikori, Blake, Gulbis, Isner/Youzhny, Soderling just to reach the SF.
Silliams/De Screamo and Jankovic/Robson in the 1R will be more interesting as talking points than matches, I feel. It's so weird that De Screamo was able to take Serena and Sweta to three sets as a 14-year-old but can barely win matches two years on - I really don't know how her career's going to pan out.
Mirjana Lucic back in a Wimbledon main draw for the first time in, like, a DECADE. Azarenka is a tough draw but she plays the Eastbourne final today, and playing well the week before a Slam is often a double-edged sword, and apparently Lucic was very impressive in qualies...hmm.
Peer vs. Ivanovic. Funny how Ivanovic is the unseeded underdog now. Peer has been excellent all year but isn't a fan of grass; Ivanovic likes the surface better but sucks everywhere anyway. Peer to win.
KING KOLYA back on tour! I've missed him.
Biggest 1R upset in waiting = Dushevina over still-in-party-mode-and-quite-right-too Fran Schiavone.

also, I'll take Voegele to beat Kirilenko and Riske over Wickmayer for the second time in a fortnight. Tempted by serve-and-volleying Dustin Brown (the first Jamaican in a Slam MD?) over Melzer and last year's junior champ Andrey Kuznetsov over Hanescu, but those are probably more "interesting matches to catch" than "realistic upsets in waiting".

so psyched for this, i'm there all day tues and weds of both weeks. we are interviewing hingis/kournikova on tues and hopefully a male star at some point too, don't know who yet. possibly ana ivanovic also, if she wins, not looking so likely tho based on the draw.
also took your advice lex for our umpires piece, after about 10 zillion emails and crazy assurances etc we are doing "a day in the life of a wimbledon umpire" (for 7-12 year old audience) with eva asderaki next week.
been loads of work and will be a mental time there but hopefully will get to stay on in the evenings if we're done and enjoy some of the thing.

I've warmed up to Vika ever since the Serena Aussie match, but I would really like to see Lucic do well. Always loved watching her play back in the day.
― I want to thank my psychiatrist (billy), Saturday, 19 June 2010 14:22 (fifteen years ago)
Sweeeeeeeeeeeeet times.
You think Nadal won't make it to the 4th round? Sure he's got tough opponents, but you feel like at least he's gonna will himself that far. No man has seemed particularly strong in the warm-up tournaments, but that might not matter. Hewitt, I guess, but I can't see him as a real threat in a Slam. Roddick might be dangerous.
Also Safina withdrawn, Dementieva withdrawn. Don't think Safina would've done much anyway, I'm happy enough about not seeing her curse herself on court for this slam.
― abcfsk, Saturday, 19 June 2010 18:42 (fifteen years ago)
Doubt Fed will win this. I mean he lost to Hewitt at Halle.
Possibly the most open championship for quite a while on the men's side: no to Fed, or Murray on his form, and then Nadal looks strong and would dismantle Fed should they meet in the final, but its whether he'd get there. Roddick's run last year looked like a last hurrah but if he can replicate the form that got him there then I'm fearing the worst..
Back to WC: Cameroon - Denmark -- its loads of fun :-)
― xyzzzz__, Saturday, 19 June 2010 19:16 (fifteen years ago)
I was going to start this thread, if only to point that there are NO ENGLISH PLAYERS in the men's singles draw. First time in the history of the event. No wildcards for county-standard hacks this year, you've got to be in the top 250 or, if you're eight-time R1-loser Alex Bogdanovic (#160-odd), tough luck - out in a 24-22 final set in the qualies. So, two Scots is the sum-total of your Brit interest, and only one of them is likely to be around on Wednesday.
Roddick didn't get very far at Queen's, which is encouraging.
(And Lex, it's perfectly possible to care very much about both events (four years ago I had two tellies set up for Roddick-Murray and POR-ENG) but I won't be mentioning the 32-nation Afro-kickabout in here).
― Michael Jones, Saturday, 19 June 2010 19:42 (fifteen years ago)
(four years ago I had two tellies set up for Roddick-Murray and POR-ENG)
Did they play at the same time of day? Well done on the effort of the set-up. Must have been switching manically back and forth but I can't remember.
― xyzzzz__, Saturday, 19 June 2010 20:40 (fifteen years ago)
Yes, it was basically simultaneous. Murray won at around 7:30pm, I think; ENG-POR k/o was 4pm, so over a little earlier.
― Michael Jones, Saturday, 19 June 2010 21:05 (fifteen years ago)
so jealz ronan - I'm thinking of going either Wed or Thu (depending on Sónar recovery time) (oh god), if the former I'll bell you.
That was a terrible loss, but he's had much worse in Tour events over the past year and yet he currently still holds two Slams. I don't think he's able to turn off in regular events and then turn ON in Slams the way Silliams can, but he's not going to be losing to the likes Hewitt or Montanes here.
here are NO ENGLISH PLAYERS in the men's singles draw.
Good! It's a marker of how bad they are that BOGDANOVIC of all people is still leagues ahead of them. I can't believe Bogdanovic had the gall to whine about not getting a wild card. Talk about self-entitlement. No player that gets a nationalistic wild card "deserves" it. If I was in charge of player development I'd hand him a lifetime ban on wild cards into any event and ban him from using LTA facilities for the rest of his career just for that. And the rest of them are WORSE than him!
Martinez Sanchez also out :(
Azarenka apparently played (and lost) the Eastbourne final with a leg injury. Lucic in with a real chance now so cue a 7-5 in the third loss. From 5-2 up obvvv.
it's perfectly possible to care very much about both events
would that anyone did! the inevitable glazed-over expression whenever I talk about tennis is so saddening, and then the same people's eyes light up when the conversation turns to the World Cunting Cup. I hope the stadium gets bombed and every football team gets wiped out, and then I hope that the game gets banned worldwide. I'm not even joking.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Sunday, 20 June 2010 00:11 (fifteen years ago)
oh apparently Gulbis is out as well so rip up all predictions. too drunk (")drunk") to remake them. Illya Marchenko to win or something.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Sunday, 20 June 2010 00:14 (fifteen years ago)
Fed won't lose to Hewitt over five sets but I reckon he will unexpectedly lose along the way. That loss of Soderling at the French had a 'this is over' feel...
Really looking forward to watching both tournaments. Shame I am unable to do two telly sets in one room. Would be really useful given the night matches under floodlights.

The way Murray's been playing I'd be amazed if he made it to the QFs.
I'm planning to queue up on the 2nd Tuesday! Should hopefully get some good doubles/juniors action if it's not pissing down.
― katstevens, Sunday, 20 June 2010 10:37 (fifteen years ago)
of course it was hyperbole and of course i meant it. i don't think football fans ever really realise just how wearyingly, disproportionately inescapable it is anyway, let alone ramped up to current levels, while as a tennis fan i have to kill my eyes/sanity on shitty, pirated internet streams just to WATCH matches, let alone enjoy anything like the same amount of commentary etc, and all the while 99% of the media mocks it like in [Removed Illegal Link] - whoever wrote that needs beheading (NOT hyperbole, would wield axe myself).
i was gonna go on thu because a) recovery time from sónar needed b) will be more interested in the projected 2R matches on that day. BUT apparently that's the day the queen is attending and i refuse to be inconvenienced by royalty bullshit. so i'm gonna try for wed, maybe? aargh. one year i swear i'll actually do something about pitching a wimbledon piece.

You may complain about the World Cup overshadowing tennis, but I think this one beats it: Our national broadcaster NRK had to sell their rights to Wimbledon because of the costs of hosting the Eurovision Song Contest!
So I've bought the live streaming subscribtion on the Wimbledon site, which looks solid. 6 courts to choose from and so on. Would prefer actual HD broadcasts on an actual TV, though.
― abcfsk, Sunday, 20 June 2010 19:29 (fifteen years ago)
No sympathy whatsoever, could argue how tennis fans don't understand etc etc but as you say its just empty, spineless hyperbole so lets move on to the tournament tomorrow. xp

also, Petra Martic really sucks for someone being hyped up as "the future of tennis". Being overpowered by Baltacha - Baltacha! - with EASE.

Lex, or anyone, in the 15 min h-time interval upcoming in the football which court should I be watching on the red button?

(it was a weird game - Baltacha alternated between great, non-chokey points, and utter howlers. Then Martic played a great point to finish it.)
soooo glad to see Davydenko back on tour.

Which he just was. Ale-Alejandro to serve for the first. Federer looks shite. This does happen, of course, and he usually does improve a bit.
Falla has broken Rodge and will serve for the set - can't possibly be more boring than the game I'm watching.

ooohhhhh @ that Falla volley at 30-30

oh hey, Falla can miss volleys too! this match is so women's tennis.
Anderson also serving for two-set lead and also cocking it up to hell, and GR has broken to level at 5-5

― ultra nate dogg (history mayne), Monday, 21 June 2010 13:52 (fifteen years ago)
Well, this is fairly unbelievable. Falla is so far away from the sort of player I'd expect to trouble Federer anywhere, much less here. As Lex's h2h posting shows, they've played on grass as recently as two weeks ago and it was totally routine. Falla is struggling with an injury too.
― Michael Jones, Monday, 21 June 2010 13:53 (fifteen years ago)

― two hats in 3/4 time (edwardo), Monday, 21 June 2010 13:55 (fifteen years ago)

It's hilarious how Fed's go-to shot is the dropshot these days

― slow motion hair ruffle (onimo), Monday, 21 June 2010 14:53 (fifteen years ago)
I always thought it was the offensive lob that Federer resisting adding to his arsenal - like it wasn't a "real" way to pass a player at the net.
Way too telegraphed that off-forehand from Fed, allowing Falla to chase it down. Shoulda been set point. Instead - THE BREAKER.
― Michael Jones, Monday, 21 June 2010 14:57 (fifteen years ago)
Falla finally getting a bit ragged and desperate from the backcourt. 5-1 in the tb to the def champ.
― Michael Jones, Monday, 21 June 2010 15:00 (fifteen years ago)
I remember him saying the forehand drop shot was a "messing around" shot that you played as a joke in practice.

― HI DERE, Monday, 21 June 2010 15:25 (fifteen years ago)
I do have this effect on Fed! I've tuned into matches on the web at work in the past where he's in trouble (Haas, FO) or it's tight (Roddick AO '07, 4-4) and he just blazes away. If I can't follow it (Soderling, FO), he loses...
― Michael Jones, Monday, 21 June 2010 15:32 (fifteen years ago)
how come Wimbledon site says Fed is ranked #1? I thought that after the French Open Nadal took the 1 spot
― serious nonsense (CaptainLorax), Monday, 21 June 2010 15:38 (fifteen years ago)
Maybe they mean seeded #1. W'don don't follow rankings for tournament seedings

― serious nonsense (CaptainLorax), Monday, 21 June 2010 15:45 (fifteen years ago)
seeding usually = rank, but there's a grass court formula that Wimbledon applies to its seedings (not sure if they've done that here or whether it's more arbitrary - if the latter it's total BS). Anyway, Nadal is No 1, will be No 1 after Wimbledon and should have been seeded No 1.
I don't know who I'm supporting on the men's side. I like Murray but seriously he must never win Wimbledon, it'd be unbearable. I guess Rafa or Nole.
LOL @ 6-0. Women's tennis in the end.
Cilic was DREADFUL against Florian Mayer. Thought this would be the season he broke through to the elite after the AO but he's regressed in a big way.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 21 June 2010 15:48 (fifteen years ago)
why is it that the #3 seed is set to play #1, and #4 play #2? Wouldn't it make more sense the other way around?
― NYC Goatse.cx and Flowers (Merdeyeux), Monday, 21 June 2010 15:51 (fifteen years ago)
Murray winning Wimbledon would be acceptable if his champion's speech was an anti-English rant.
(last year, Wimbledon's BS seeding move was to raise Sharapova to 24th when she was ranked 59th, which even broke their rule whereby they can only move the top 32 players around in the seedings. And then she lost in the second round, LOL.)

she may have lost but that was a pretty gutsy match from young Robson - fought back from a break down then staved off four match pts before JJ finally ended it.
her serve is fantastic for her age - 13 aces in all - though her second serve is woeful. she'll get better though.
― Roz, Monday, 21 June 2010 17:19 (fifteen years ago)
Q. What are your thoughts on what's taken place with the French team in the World Cup? If you've already addressed this in French, I apologize.
MARION BARTOLI: I think here it's Wimbledon, it's the tennis, and I don't really want to speak about soccer.
Cue...even more questions about fucking football.
Robson played really well against Jankovic! The same glaring weaknesses we know about already (she is so, so slow) but I think she's improving on them. Jankovic obv didn't really want to work as hard as she eventually realised she'd have to, and Robson's fight towards the end was pretty good to see.
A comeback win for KING KOLYA, 9-7 in the fifth! Like Fed, but even more impressive. I thought Kolya would lose to Anderson, tbh.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 21 June 2010 17:24 (fifteen years ago)
So glad Djoker is on the red button so I don't have to watch awful Roddick. Rochus just about hanging in on his serve, Djokovic looks extremely comfortable on his.
― katstevens, Monday, 21 June 2010 17:54 (fifteen years ago)
Argh ffs why do I bother posting anything at all? Djoko just got broken (3 break points) after losing like 1 point on serve up until that point :(
― katstevens, Monday, 21 June 2010 17:57 (fifteen years ago)
i can't work out how to get more than two courts on the new TV - am sure i've been able to get the outside courts (all available on the BBC website) on a TV before but can't make it happen today!
Henin vs. Sevastova online it is...she's on court 12, lol. She's gonna have to earn Centre Court status back, evidently.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 21 June 2010 17:58 (fifteen years ago)
Even I think that asking tennis players about the football is nonsense, and I'm probably not going to see a second of Wimbledon until the final.

― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 21 June 2010 18:00 (fifteen years ago)
aaaand Rochus gets the first set. Djoko making some really weird shot choices - on the set point just now he did a great shot down the line to send Rochus off the edge of the court, then utterly failed to capitalise on it by putting the next shot EXACTLY where Rochus was standing. The court was WIDE OPEN right infront of you, gah.

Ooo-er. Djoko steams through the 2nd set 5-0, then Rochus holds to avoid the bagel and then BREAKS.
― katstevens, Monday, 21 June 2010 18:51 (fifteen years ago)
And then gives away the set 0-40. No idea what the hell is going on.

Had to ~focus on work~ for a bit there - looked up just in time to find Nole double faulting to give away the third set. And now I think they're closing the roof!!!! Second ever night match coming up I believe...
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 21 June 2010 19:38 (fifteen years ago)
Oh yeah, watched Henin/Sevastova. Sevastova is really talented - great serve, lovely smooth motion, able to both hit powerful winners and finesse shots, lovely all-court game, but she didn't seem to have...match intensity, if that makes sense. The desperation to win every point and keep up a certain level. Even when Henin is misfiring, that's what gets her through. Suspect Sevastova is one of those players who are so naturally talented that they've never really developed a work ethic. As for Justine, she wasn't that good at the start but raised her game when she realised how good Sevastova was, and in the end it was fairly easy. Except for...you guessed it...her serving. Let us not speak of that.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 21 June 2010 19:41 (fifteen years ago)

This is great stuff, btw. Always had some empathy with the Rochus brothers, seeing as they have that whole modest stature thing going on. Not a hindrance back in the Laver and Rosewall days, bit of a handicap in these elongated times.
― Michael Jones, Monday, 21 June 2010 21:19 (fifteen years ago)
I still find it incredibly weird that there's a pro tennis player comfortably shorter than me. And yeah, this is mostly great, and when not great it's dramatic. Rochus is such a fighter.

Momentarily getting back to Fed v that other falla: In didn't post during set 4 but saw every shot (poss more attentively, precisely BECOZ didn't post) but then packed it in (round midnight Oz time) with a fair idea what was about to happen. Still haven't seen a frame of set 5 but suggest it may not have been a matter of Falla choking, or going into a blue funk at the opportunity he'd blown, or even running out of energy.
Maybe Rodge had had the shit scared out of him so badly at the prospect of going out on day 1 that when he belatedly hit something like top gear he made good and sure he stayed there - look what happened the last time he tried to play this guy on cruise control!
Luczak beat 30=something seed Robredo. Nice effort. Molik won. Yay! Hewitt won. Yay I suppose....
― Fred Nerk, Tuesday, 22 June 2010 04:24 (fourteen years ago)
I think Falla was struggling for fitness for most of the match - didn't he have injury treatment after the second set?
― put your Villa on this one (onimo), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 10:16 (fourteen years ago)
he had a doctor come on after the second and the third iirc
― ultra nate dogg (history mayne), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 10:22 (fourteen years ago)
Q. We saw that you got treatment for your leg. Can that have explained why Federer got back into the game again?
ALEJANDRO FALLA: Well, I had a contracture on my leg, but nothing happened. I took a treatment in the two breaks. Well, nothing happen. I felt okay after that.

it didn't seem to hamper him in the 3rd/4th sets - can't really say anything about the 5th as i switched over after that, as it was pretty obvious how it would go (see: women's tennis playbook passim).

first Anastasia Rodionova tantrum of the tournament on my TV right now! :D
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 11:45 (fourteen years ago)
de Brito is hopeless.
― abcfsk, Tuesday, 22 June 2010 12:30 (fourteen years ago)
I don't get what happened to de Brito. She was able to take sets off Serena and Sweta when she was 14, but ever since Wimbledon last year - just after she'd broken into the top 100 - she's been utterly hopeless against any top 200 opponent. I know she has no serve, but the groundies she has/used to have were pretty great. This sort of career regression is just inexplicable.
(I'm not actually watching because I value my eardrums, and Rodionova tantrums are more entertaining than dying poodle shrieks - hey hey, here comes another one!)
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 12:50 (fourteen years ago)

― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 12:57 (fourteen years ago)
Meanwhile Keothavong just keeps putting the all back into play and goes 4-0 up as Rodio falls arse over elbow, bitches as a ball that came down in Hammaersmith was called out, swears in at least two languages and eveb bleats 'It's not fair!' at one point.
― Fred Nerk, Tuesday, 22 June 2010 12:58 (fourteen years ago)

Ah, I'm remembering why for about six years Stosur was a laughingstock. She's lost her first service game against the not-as-fat-as-used-to-be Kaia Kanepi. Seriously, she's such a slow starter, no wonder she lost so often before she was able to deploy weapons to keep in the game.

Maybe, in addition to restricting wildcards to the top 250 men, the AELTC/LTA should've just barred all the British women as a matter of principle, even if they had direct entry. Talk about pissing it away.
― Michael Jones, Tuesday, 22 June 2010 13:34 (fourteen years ago)
On top of Baltacha losing from 6-2, 5-3 up yesterday (in some ways that was even worse, because Baltacha actually looked completely dominant right up until she served for it, and then collapsed, whereas this was just a scrappy affair from both players).

Dear Sam: When your opponent is winning 90% of points on their first serve, why didn't you, you know, stand BACK A LITTLE BIT. Who do you think you are, Mirjana Lucic?
― two hats in 3/4 time (edwardo), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 14:25 (fourteen years ago)
Nishikori's quite good. Wish I'd seen more of him in my tennis-spectating career.
― abcfsk, Tuesday, 22 June 2010 15:03 (fourteen years ago)
Nishikori is great, and I'm sure you'll see a lot more of him. There are some terrific Youtube clips of his epic five-set win over Ferrer at the USO a couple of years ago, and his win over Blake to get his first title in Delray Beach (particularly entertaining is when he fakes Blake out by pretending he's going to hit a drop shot, only to poke a forehand slice pass past him). I LOVE his jumping forehand. Such a pity he got that elbow injury that kept him out so long - definitely hope it hasn't stalled his development too much.
Oprandi/Watson is a very watchable match - Oprandi has such a unique style, her feel for the ball is so intuitive and natural. She was a standout junior, reached the top 50 in 2006 (iirc), but then took a few years off to, by all accounts, be a bit of a party girl. And now she's back. Her creativity and touch remind me a lot of Schnyder, and she seems so lackadaisical when she ambles around the court between points.
Watson is pretty good as well! First time I've seen her and she's actually impressing me quite a bit with her court instincts.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 15:33 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah never seen her play before either and she seems pretty good. I like her already for that interview after she won junior USO where she talked about her love for Delpo. My kind of girl. :)
― Roz, Tuesday, 22 June 2010 16:01 (fourteen years ago)
Watson: I think playing someone like Oprandi, who's not going to overpower you, maybe flatters her and masks her own lack of power, but I absolutely love the way she's gotten herself into this match: you can almost see her thinking her way into it, working out Oprandi's vulnerabilities and playing accordingly, and she's really run away with this second set. (LOL at Oprandi tanking the last game though - three aces for Watson!) Watson also has a terrific mentality - hasn't got down herself once, no whining or yelling or shrieking or crying, and she's patiently dug herself out of several potential holes. Very mature play. And I don't think I've seen her blow a single putaway, even though her lack of overwhelming firepower means she has to hit several more shots to win a point. She does get caught between being passive and aggressive sometimes though.
Anyway, she's basically been in Robson's shadow for her entire junior career (and you can see why: Robson's younger, had better results, has a more obviously impressive game with her must-hit-winner-now cavewoman mentality as opposed to Watson's patient point construction). And is probably destined to do so in the seniors. I've felt bad for Watson because of this, but watching her I think it's probably more of a benefit - far less attention and pressure on her.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 16:09 (fourteen years ago)
Maria's first match was ok. Only 51% first serves in is not gonna do it against favourites, but 94% first serves won is about where she needs to be against a player like Pivovarova.
― abcfsk, Tuesday, 22 June 2010 16:33 (fourteen years ago)
Just caught the last game of Watson/Oprandi - lovely gutsy shot from Watson to save one of the match points, shame about the other one.
Ugh telly showing Tim Henman in the commentary box, I think he's wearing a Global Hypercolour shirt.
― katstevens, Tuesday, 22 June 2010 16:53 (fourteen years ago)
yeah from 0-2 in the third Oprandi was basically on fire for four games, and that was close enough to the finishing line for her to close it out. (Unlike Keothavong, aargh.)

Also? This match is on Centre Court. One of the biggest stories of R1 regardless of how Lucic performs. And yet it isn't being televised (who the FUCK wants to watch Mahut and Isner serve at each other for five sets) or even streaming on the BBC site. I'm having to find a pirate stream - which is obviously a BBC stream as it's got the BBC commentators, but which the BBC isn't actually transmitting! Why why why why why is this the case.

today was so amazing, had never been before, saw a lot of tennis and worked pretty hard. interviewed kournikova/hingis early on and then one of our pieces fell through so lots of waiting and stuff. also got to help produce a live on the roof of the broadcast centre, so crazy. such an amazing buzz and sense of occasion around...
― I see what this is (Local Garda), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 21:38 (fourteen years ago)
glad you enjoyed!! i guess it was the ivanovic piece that fell through with her 1R loss?
btw, everyone needs to watch this shot - http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/8754532.stm - O_O

(also i'm going tomorrow now, not today - decided that outside court moseying prob wouldn't be affected by the queen, tho if it is expect a few more waves of hatred emanating from this direction)
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 23 June 2010 06:09 (fourteen years ago)
Is getting in to outside courts generally easy peasy?
― abcfsk, Wednesday, 23 June 2010 09:13 (fourteen years ago)
yeah - I always start queueing from 8/8/30ish, get into the grounds around 10.30/11ish and then just spend the rest of the day moseying around the outside courts depending on who I want to see/where there are seats. Towards the end of the day it's worth seeing if you can get into CC or No 1, the stewards are usually really nice and early departers often leave free seats available.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 23 June 2010 10:13 (fourteen years ago)
(you might have to queue/get your seat early for the outside show courts like 12 and...whatever the other one is these days, they always used to be 13 and 18. tbh if the queue's long I usually don't bother, even if it's a match I want to see - there's plenty of tennis elsewhere and the day (and LIFE) is too short to spend in queues.)
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 23 June 2010 10:16 (fourteen years ago)
My experiences with queueing over the years has been variable. The first time I went in 1987, I joined the queue around 9:30am but didn't get in until mid-afternoon. Two years later I took the sleeper train down from Liverpool, joining the queue at 7am and got in for start-of-play no problem (in fact, I bought tickets for court 2, watching an hour of Chang-Agenor, before giving it away and wandering around the grounds).
In later years, when work commitments usually meant going in the evening, I sometimes got in (1998 and 2000, saw loads 6-9:30pm), sometimes gave up (2003-04 - insane queues snaking all the way round the car park).
I've been on Centre Court once - £3 resale tickets and the last four games of Enqvist-Cink in 2000!
― Michael Jones, Wednesday, 23 June 2010 11:06 (fourteen years ago)
Is it worth trying to go after work in week 2? I thought it might be fun to see those senior matches, but would they be on during the afternoon.
maybe I should just remember to take a day off for week one next year.

And you've developed an annoying habit of dropping sets to utter nobodies like Greta Arn of Hungary.
― Fred Nerk, Wednesday, 23 June 2010 11:58 (fourteen years ago)
Am I reading this right? Roddick has dropped a set to Llodra?
― katstevens, Wednesday, 23 June 2010 12:48 (fourteen years ago)
Am I reading this right? Llodra is being coached by Amelie Mauresmo?
― "holiday season u shrimps!" (HI DERE), Wednesday, 23 June 2010 12:49 (fourteen years ago)
Ivan Ljubicic on finding a naked Llodra in his locker: "He was looking at me, I was looking at him. I said, 'What the hell are you doing here?'. He (Llodra) said to me, 'I'm trying to get positive energy from you. You're winning a lot of matches this year'. The locker, it's not a big locker, it's a small locker. It's not easy to get in that locker, I'm telling you. He is not a small guy but very flexible. Very, very flexible."

Bloody Slam Tracker has been frozen on match point for Molik-Arn for the last 40 minutes. Had to go to Foxtel 513 to get the result, which was as I suspected - Arn in straight sets, failing to serve to stay in both times.
Now watching Clijsters v Every Sprem Is Sacred - Clij well on top.
― Fred Nerk, Wednesday, 23 June 2010 13:11 (fourteen years ago)
Jebus, Isner and Mahut are 14-14 in the 5th.
― katstevens, Wednesday, 23 June 2010 14:45 (fourteen years ago)
have banned self from watching this today as have TOO MUCH WORK. happily Isner/Mahut is the kind of epic I can live without. Serve, serve, serve, zzz.
Bah, no Roddick upset :( Apparently when Llodra won Eastbourne last week and thanked Mauresmo in his speech, the mention of her name drew rapturous applause from the crowd.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 23 June 2010 14:49 (fourteen years ago)
They're STILL going. 17-18 now, don't even think they're bothering to return each others serve.
― katstevens, Wednesday, 23 June 2010 15:03 (fourteen years ago)
104 aces in that Isner-Mahut match now. I wonder if that's the aggregate world record? I know Karlovic hit 78 in a Davis Cup tie recently.

They're about to edge past the record for the longest men's singles (Witsken-Holmes, 1989 - 5hr28min). This may well be the longest final set ever too.
― Michael Jones, Wednesday, 23 June 2010 15:39 (fourteen years ago)
Longest men's singles at Wimb, that is. There have been 6hr+ matches at Roland Garros and in Davis Cup.

also: Mahut won his second qualy match 24-22 in the third (over Bogdanovic, lulz) and his third qualy match 6-4 in the fifth. what an insane tournament for him.
I find John Isner weirdly sexual.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 23 June 2010 16:07 (fourteen years ago)
both playing on the assumption that the other's eventually gonna tear a shoulder serving, I think.
― NYC Goatse.cx and Flowers (Merdeyeux), Wednesday, 23 June 2010 16:07 (fourteen years ago)
in Mahut's favour, he's fitter; in Isner's favour, he's serving first. in ordinary circumstances I don't think I'd pay this match the slightest bit of attention but...
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 23 June 2010 16:11 (fourteen years ago)
Isner has a doubles match later, lol
― "holiday season u shrimps!" (HI DERE), Wednesday, 23 June 2010 16:14 (fourteen years ago)
and has to play tomorrow (if he wins) :o
I suspect his partner won't hold it against him if he withdraws from the doubles (and if it's Querrey, he owes Isner one after he wimped out of RG)

We're past the magic six-hour mark. Need to get McEnroe in the commentary box to offer some insight here - he's played two six-hour matches (vs Wilander Davis Cup '82, vs Becker Davis Cup '87). And he didn't get to have a sleep break in the middle.
― Michael Jones, Wednesday, 23 June 2010 16:17 (fourteen years ago)
Looking at the slamtracker stats - both at >83% 1st serve points won, only one break point converted each (Mahut's only had one break point!) - looks like a match without end

* Longest match: At the 2004 French Open, Fabrice Santoro took 6 hours, 33 minutes to defeat Arnaud Clément 6–4, 6–3, 6–7(5), 3–6, 16–14.[1] * Longest women's match: In 1984, Vicki Nelson took 6 hours, 31 minutes to defeat Jean Hepner 6–4, 7–6(11). The match featured a 29-minute, 643-shot rally, the longest in professional tennis history.[2] * Longest match completed in a single day: The Nelson–Hepner match above remains the longest to be completed within a single day. The 2004 Santoro–Clément match was suspended by darkness in the fifth set with 4:38 elapsed, and completed the following day.[2] * Longest doubles match: In a 2002 Davis Cup semifinal tie, Lucas Arnold/David Nalbandian defeated Yevgeny Kafelnikov/Marat Safin in 6 hours, 20 minutes 6–4, 6–4, 5–7, 3–6, 19–17.[3][4] * Longest unofficial professional match: On 25 February 2009, Chris Eaton defeated James Ward in a play off match to represent the United Kingdom in Davis Cup. Eaton won the match 6–3, 6–2, 6–7(3), 2–6, 21–19 in 6 hours and 40 minutes. If the match had been recognized by the ATP it would have officially been the longest match played by seven minutes.[5]

It has to be an injury that ends this. Or loss of condition so bad that one of them can no longer toss the ball up without cramping. Nice Isner drop-shot just now...but it's 40/15 and probably about to be 47-47 all.
I'm sure there's a 49-47 in the record books somewhere, possibly involving a Brit in the late days of the pre-Open pro tour, on polished wooden indoor surfaces where it was impossible to return. But I can't look it up because I have to put the kids to bed.

man that was so amazing and weird...that court is right below the broadcast centre so i got to see a lot of that game. it was so weird watching it, going to do one of our stories/interviews, then coming back and the score being another 10 games each. had to leave out of sheer exhaustion (as lame as that sounds compared to the two players) about 8 and got home around 9ish to see it was still going. the atmosphere was amazing around that court...also was standing right beside stan smith. back in my office now till next tues and weds but man...easily best two days of my working life, so cool to be part of something like wimbledon.

― hi bianca :x (cozen), Thursday, 24 June 2010 14:49 (fourteen years ago)
At 60-60, Mahut had won 16 more points in the 5th set than Isner - so he's certainly threatened a bit more (though Isner's had more break points). But maybe 16pts is neither here nor there after 7 hours.

Mahut seems stronger off of the groundstrokes. But Isner seems to pull out an ace whenever he needs one (i.e. down 15-30).
This is incredible/fascinating/excruciating.

I can't believe Mahut went back out for doubles.
had such a great day, report to come if I ever recover. Saw the last few games of That Match on the hill; at 2.30, we'd been on court 19, where you can see court 18, and we heard the Pennetta/Niculescu match on 18 finish. Isner/Mahut weren't starting til 3.30 so there would be an empty court for an hour, but not one person on 18 moved.
this Wimbledon has a real dream-like, delirious quality to it. or maybe that's just the Pimms talking.

― pearsonic, Friday, 25 June 2010 11:40 (fourteen years ago)
Also being smacked: Nadia Petrova. But it's to Henin, so who's surprised? Justine has played one loose game so far with some dodgy forehands, but a couple of really artful ones, gorgeous winners of both wings, cleverly angled returns of serve... Petrova isn't playing badly but Henin has ESP as to where she's going to serve or bash the ball.

― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 25 June 2010 13:17 (fourteen years ago)
Overall Henin/Petrova was a decent match. Henin started so quickly - up 4-1 after 15 minutes, and Petrova put up a better fight in the second set, only to then hit double-faults in her last service game. Too slow to start and serve didn't hit stride in time. Justine could win this.
x-post lol, there is women's tennis, and then there is Nadia Petrova

Zomg. The point at 2-2 00-30 in Hewitt/Monfils was sublime. Hewitt is actually playing really well. Serving nicely, using backhand slice intelligently. Not that he can win, and surely Federer wasn't at his best at Halle, but you can see why that upset happened.

Kleybanova was up 3-1, 30-0 and then Venus won 8 straight points with stellar play. This could be a barnburner. I like Kleybanova's ridiculous ball-bashing and how she doesn't seem to be afraid of the moment. If she could only get fitter...

~Drama~ in the unlikeliest places, specifically Hanescu/Brands. Hanescu serves for it at two sets and *5-3 up, misses four match points over that game and the eventual TB, didn't see the first half of the fourth but from *3-4 down basically melts down. "Injuries", complaints to the umpire about the crowd (he accused someone of saying something about the injuries?), a code violation for swearing at the crowd, tanking the *0-2 in the 5th game by deliberately foot faulting (standing on the baseline!), quits at 0-3.
Bepa was again the star of her mixed doubles match :)

― Jorge Fucile Jerry (pandemic), Friday, 25 June 2010 20:36 (fourteen years ago)
It really doesn't seem like something Hanescu would do, so maybe he felt provoked (though no excuse, still). Apparently four fans were arrested at the same court for disorderly contact.
― I want to thank my psychiatrist (billy), Friday, 25 June 2010 23:47 (fourteen years ago)

― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 26 June 2010 08:03 (fourteen years ago)
They showed it twice on the highlights show, just so Tracy Austin could be grossed out all over again, and, yes, he spat into, or in the general direction of, the crowd. It's not exactly Jeff Tarango but I somehow doubt Hanescu will be playing Wimb 2011.
― Michael Jones, Saturday, 26 June 2010 08:56 (fourteen years ago)
Just seen it for the first time. He did spit in the direction of the crowd but there was no way it was gonna actually reach the crowd. I think it was a gesture of obvious contempt but he knew it wouldn't like *land* on someone.

Look! It's the Rad Wanksta vs Unforced Errani. Already three exquisite drop-shots from Aggie. I was going to say, why don't more players do them, then I remembered that they DO and never at the right time and never in the right way. Radwanska, though, has the best drop-shot since Hingis.

Still not as bad as Azarenka, who should get pwned by Kvitova.

lol shot of Serena and Cibulkova talking and laughing while waiting to get on court, and Serena is like three heads taller

Radwanska's dropshots are overrated... what a convoluted motion.
― abcfsk, Saturday, 26 June 2010 12:39 (fourteen years ago)
Okay, I see your point. A smart opponent can see them coming. But they are at least done at opportune times which makes this less of a problem. And how many other players who aren't Henin can even hit them properly?
Lol at Azarenka. From 5-5, she loses 8 games in a row to lose 5-7 0-6.
― two hats in 3/4 time (edwardo), Saturday, 26 June 2010 12:44 (fourteen years ago)
Azarenka was serving for the first set too, so I think she lost 9 in a row.
― I want to thank my psychiatrist (billy), Saturday, 26 June 2010 12:48 (fourteen years ago)
MariaJo can!
Yeah I glimpsed Vika being dominant and then checked back at the scoreboard later to see her suddenly having lost. What IS she doing at the moment.
― abcfsk, Saturday, 26 June 2010 12:52 (fourteen years ago)
Kvitova was really impressive when I saw her on Thu. Looked really comfortable on grass, looked like she'd got fitter, is able to actually play a degree of defence these days.
Ferrer/Chardy has been quite a match.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 26 June 2010 14:15 (fourteen years ago)
Wow. What a collapse from Chardy at the end. Failed to serve it out at 5-4, then at 5-6...two DFs, including on MP.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 26 June 2010 14:17 (fourteen years ago)
lol, Sharapova opens by getting broken by Zahlavova-Strycova. I don't think this is an upset in the making but it would obv be hilarious.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 26 June 2010 14:25 (fourteen years ago)
Sharapova at the net is one the funniest things in tennis. She's missed about four makeable volleys in the past few games. And Zahlavova-Strycova looks really agitated out there. You can tell they hate each other.
― I want to thank my psychiatrist (billy), Saturday, 26 June 2010 15:02 (fourteen years ago)
BZS always looks agitated. A reliable one for tantrums and emotional meltdowns <3
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 26 June 2010 15:06 (fourteen years ago)
Another one to add to my "must always watch" list, then.
Much as I'd like to see an upset I'd also like to see a Serena-Sharapova matchup, because the way they've been playing it seems like it'd be another bloodbath.
― I want to thank my psychiatrist (billy), Saturday, 26 June 2010 15:10 (fourteen years ago)
I'm only watching this for BZS. I don't know how anyone can abide Sharapova and her intolerable noises.

I don't know how anyone can care that much about a grunt.

― I want to thank my psychiatrist (billy), Saturday, 26 June 2010 15:35 (fourteen years ago)
Reading the book on how to beat Sharapova in the breaks? Is that the new way around coaching? Can't say I've picked up anyone doing that before.
― abcfsk, Saturday, 26 June 2010 15:53 (fourteen years ago)
Though playing a good match v Nadal, Petzschner is hilarious to watch at the net. His actual shots are more than competent, but he seems to place himself in an ungainly fashion right in the centre making him a sitting duck to pass. He's returning Nadal's serve extremely well but not doing much in the rallies once he gets the advantage, and really, he's one or two flubbed cross-courts from being two sets to one up. As it is, still one each.
― two hats in 3/4 time (edwardo), Saturday, 26 June 2010 16:12 (fourteen years ago)
C'mon Masha.

― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 26 June 2010 16:24 (fourteen years ago)
Must confess when I read Lex's predictions up thread about Rafa not making the 4th round I scoffed. Which only really goes to show that I don't know nearly enough about tennis, particularly outside the grand slams.
― Jorge Fucile Jerry (pandemic), Saturday, 26 June 2010 16:35 (fourteen years ago)

actually think the pick of those in terms of quality will be Bepa/Lady JaJa - they played some amazing matches at the end of 2008, their games seem to bring out the best in each other. Silliams will rout Shaz, maybe with another bagel set, and Justine/St Kim will just drive me insane.

GREAT first set from Bepa! Closed it out with an amazing running FH (she was virtually in the audience) and then an ace.
JaJa not even playing that badly, though double faulting on two separate break points was a bit rubbish.

(Sorry - too manic at work to have a stream on today...well, maybe later)
JJ has had the trainer on at 0-3 in the second then apparently defaulted. I can't tell you myself because the effing BBC streams are broken and my freeview is only showing Federer warming up and the British dudes losing at doubles.
― katstevens, Monday, 28 June 2010 12:06 (fourteen years ago)
yeah, Jankovic w/d - I switched to Li/A-Rad when she got the trainer out at 0-3. Think she said it was her back, which would explain her pitiful serving towards the end.

Groth a break up in set 2! Well, this won't last. ALso I don't care because Henin vs Kim is on and I can watch it.
x-post I did say "should be"!
― two hats in 3/4 time (edwardo), Monday, 28 June 2010 12:12 (fourteen years ago)
A-Rad's best surface is probably grass, though. Serves her finesse well and adds a touch more zip to compensate for her lack of power. Still, looks like Li will go through there, though it's not very good and as you say, Justine/Kim takes precedence.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 28 June 2010 12:15 (fourteen years ago)
A-Rad is going to have a nice career, always in the top 15, maybe clipping the top 5, but she's never going to be competing for Slams. Li's got a much better serve which I'd have thought helped her on grass in a match-up, but I defer to you as always.
GO JUSTINE! (I love you too Kim, but Justine needs to WIN THIS THING)
― two hats in 3/4 time (edwardo), Monday, 28 June 2010 12:18 (fourteen years ago)

She should be disappointed (esp w/ those set points) but there's no shame in losing to Henin at the French and Serena at Wimbledon in two really close, could've-gone-either-way matches. I mean, I was expecting a rout, and that was far from the case.
The main thing now is just to get her ranking back up, so these matches happen later in the draw.
― I want to thank my psychiatrist (billy), Monday, 28 June 2010 15:39 (fourteen years ago)
xp thing is, Li has played Serena much harder than Sharapova has in the past few years! She's even beat her, which is more than Maria can say.
― I want to thank my psychiatrist (billy), Monday, 28 June 2010 15:40 (fourteen years ago)
after the (high quality, albeit in a rally-free style that leaves me cold) first set I realised how much I disliked both of them and switched over to Nole/Chewitt. Obv switching back for the Silliams interview.
Nole's called the doctor out on court, not the trainer...am guessing it's them allergies again.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 28 June 2010 15:40 (fourteen years ago)
Serena is hilariously mean sometimes
(other times, like with that line judge, she's just mean)
I get how ppl can like Sharapova, particularly circa 2004.
― Opinions are a lot like assholes. You've got LOTS of BOTH of them. (HI DERE), Monday, 28 June 2010 15:40 (fourteen years ago)
yeah, like Serena I also expect a much tougher match from Li!
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 28 June 2010 15:41 (fourteen years ago)
when I read Serena interviews, especially if she's in one of her spells where she doesn't give a shit about tournaments, I think she should just take up trolling the tour as a full-time occupation. Like calling Stosur "a good framer" last summer.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 28 June 2010 15:42 (fourteen years ago)
trolling the tour
Hahahah I would love this.
― Ned Raggett, Monday, 28 June 2010 15:43 (fourteen years ago)
Nooo Nole don't put the hat back on
― katstevens, Monday, 28 June 2010 15:46 (fourteen years ago)
Sharapova leaves me cold but I do admire her fight, and the fact that she didn't give up when her shoulder gave out. With her titles and her millions, it could've been easy to just walk away, but she went out there and worked through it (taking some humiliating losses in the process) and has had two admirable Slam performances in a row now, albeit in defeat.
I love the Williams sisters but I would love to see Li pull a Schiavone. I think she has a decent shot too!
― I want to thank my psychiatrist (billy), Monday, 28 June 2010 15:46 (fourteen years ago)
yeah I would be pretty psyched if Li won, even though I'm really rooting for a Williams sister

Li is hilarious also. After some loss at the US Open all she could talk about was shopping on Fifth Ave.

oh oh oh, and didn't she call it something like "Road Number Five"?
and when she reached the AO SF she ventured her intention to "take the beer"! and she started off her victory speech in Edgbaston after beating Sharapova with "Sorry Maria, but...I was too good"!
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 28 June 2010 15:53 (fourteen years ago)

― Michael Jones, Monday, 28 June 2010 16:15 (fourteen years ago)
(Not that it would be anything other than Murray commentary, but...)
Nole looks kinda sluggish, Hewitt taking advantage of it.

I didn't know where to look just then - at the EXACT same time as Yen-Hsun Lu was winning six points in a row in the TB to take a 2 sets to 1 lead over Roddick on my laptop, Nole was tearing off his shirt in celebration on my TV.
(I looked at Nole. Obv. It's ALL GOOD though.)
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 28 June 2010 16:58 (fourteen years ago)
It will be srsly hilarious if Roddick goes out.

― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 28 June 2010 17:39 (fourteen years ago)
Jebus Murray, about time. He took about 4 goes to get his third set break, should be fairly academic from here on. Amazed that he's looking so strong after the crappy season he's had, but I guess he's not had much to test him in this draw? Querrey looks like the most sunburnt man in Wimbledon and that's saying something.
― katstevens, Monday, 28 June 2010 17:49 (fourteen years ago)
AAARGHHH, that Roddick/Lu TB.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 28 June 2010 17:55 (fourteen years ago)

― so you want Mark Ronson to cry into your ass (acoleuthic), Monday, 28 June 2010 18:38 (fourteen years ago)
well...he hasn't broken it in 5 sets, so I'd say not really!
he really wasted that 4th set TB - sure Roddick got lucky when he somehow won a point with a Demented-level dropshot, but that tame netted BH from Lu at 5-5, ugh.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 28 June 2010 18:40 (fourteen years ago)

― so you want Mark Ronson to cry into your ass (acoleuthic), Monday, 28 June 2010 18:42 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah, Lu-Roddick 4th-set tb was huge let-down; could see from the courtside clock that it wasn't live (and I knew it was 6-6 from walking up the hill from the station) so I assumed BBC2 was showing it "as live" cos it was the climax of the match.
Still...Lu has a glimmer here at 8-7...

aaaaand your men's QFs:
(1) Roger Federer vs. (12) Tomas Berdych(3) Novak Djokovic vs. Yen-Hsun Lu(10) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs. (4) Andy Murray(6) Robin Soderling vs. (2) Rafael Nadal
I think Tsonga will beat Murray! And I'm definitely NOT assuming Soderling will beat Nadal, as most seem to do.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 28 June 2010 19:20 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah the scars of that French Open massacre might play its part.
Murray does need a test - a bit suspect that he hasn't dropped a set given the season he's had.
― xyzzzz__, Monday, 28 June 2010 19:37 (fourteen years ago)
it says a lot about Murray's draw that I was fairly confident pencilling him into the QFs, given the season he's had. Querrey the only remote threat and really, Queer Eye is the kind of one-dimensional big-serving goon that Murray excels against. As illustrated today. Tsonga is a different matter entirely.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 28 June 2010 19:40 (fourteen years ago)
Berdych to beat Fed, I wonder?

coin flip IMO. Would favor Nadal if it weren't for the knee issues.

Bepa, seriously, take out Clijsters.
― abcfsk, Monday, 28 June 2010 20:28 (fourteen years ago)
All good QFs in the men's, I think. No foregone conclusions, but I'd strongly favour Fed and Nole in the top half based on form from the last two rounds; the bottom half is a toss-up. On first week form, you'd pick Murray and Sod, but Tsonga looked much better yesterday and Nadal coasted for the first time in the event. I wonder if Tsonga might fulfil the Grosjean/Ancic role this year, dashing Brit hopes in the QF with an inspired performance to the widespread incomprehension of the popular press (who only expect Murray to lose to one of two players).
― Michael Jones, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 08:15 (fourteen years ago)
yeah...if Soderling hadn't struggled so much against Ferrer (who = B-Nadal, knee issues and all), I'd have favoured him much more. That showed that Soderling isn't actually able to just bulldoze his way through the better defenders and mentally strong fighters in the draw.
god knows I'm wishing for this but...so not gonna happen :(
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 08:21 (fourteen years ago)

Never been a massive fan of the 'Reva (my first nickname for her was Vinegar Tits for her on-court persona), but credit where due - she's had several chances to melt don in this match just in the 20-odd minutes I've been watching so possibly her temperament isn't so fragile any more.

so weird to think that Li d. Serena was probably the MOST likely upset today!
also: prior to this week, Pironkova had never won more than three consecutive Tour matches in a half-decade career. And suddenly she's won 5! At Wimbledon!

Zevon has also worked on her facial muscles - now she can smile without the top half of her head falling off, unthinkable not so long back. Nice accent too....

Don't remember Lina - but Amanda Koetzer also had wonderful eyes, a great accent and a gorgeous smile made all the better for being not often seen. Not as graceful as Bepa, but that wouldn't be easy when you're five foot diddly-squat and can barely see over the net.

― abcfsk, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 15:27 (fourteen years ago)
As if Serena wasn't now the overwhelming favorite to take the title: Li has lost to the eventual champ in the last three slams (Clijsters QF US, Serena SF Aus, Schiavone 3r RG).
― I want to thank my psychiatrist (billy), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 15:41 (fourteen years ago)
The actual best match of the day is still going on: Kanepi had 2 match pts in the 2nd set tiebreaker and lost it, was up 4-0 in the third only to have Kvitova come back, and then had 3 more match pts when Kvitova served at 5-6. Kvitova is now serving for the match
― I want to thank my psychiatrist (billy), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 16:30 (fourteen years ago)
Women's SF:
(1)Serena Williams vs. Petra Kvitova(21)Vera Zvonareva vs. Tsvetana Pironkova
...for real.
― I want to thank my psychiatrist (billy), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 16:36 (fourteen years ago)
Five match points...poor Kaia. She was the better player for most of the match, more creative and versatile...but when trying to close it out either went for too much or, like, DFs. And at the end, Kvitova really started playing well and took control, so she absolutely deserves it.
I'm really impressed by how those two have improved their fitness, incidentally. They're never going to be Pironkova-thin, but they've been a lot larger than they are now, and it helped both of them dig themselves out of several key rallies.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 16:41 (fourteen years ago)

X-treme anecdote: On a holiday to Tallinn I bussed around the outskirts of the city and close to a tennis facility Kanepi entered, tennis outfit and all. Lovely little city, by the way, clean and comfortable, if anyone is pondering a pleasant vacation to a picturesque old european city.

omg apparently Kournikova's presser was a bit of a classic. saw this tweet earlier:
TennisReporters
After talking over and around Hingis (who was bit stunned) for 20 minutes, Kournikova literally had to be dragged out of press conference.2 minutes ago via web
and she didn't let us down content-wise! http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2010/jun/29/anna-kournikova-martina-hingis-wimbledon
Of course Hingis was asked the question: "There's no way you want to come back?" She had hardly got out the first six words of her answer ("Well, we're going to play TeamTennis …") when Kournikova cut her off to embark on another of her seemingly ceaseless monologues.
"It's a different mental commitment. The girls work their asses off. Tennis is a grind and I think the women in general don't get enough credit. It's a full time job, it's 24/7. You're week-in, week-out, on the road for 10, 11 months of the year. You have no personal life. You have no home life. It's not glamorous at all," Kournikova said, her two diamond rings shimmering in the spotlights.
On and on she went. It was like being button-holed by a drunken grandmother.
:D

Oudin is going to be "that young girl who did well in the US Open" for the rest of her life, and nothing more, so that's kind of hilarious. Serena must've heard the "I play Fed Cup because I love my country, and others don't" comments she made.

BBC claims Fed still has some way to go to match Jimmy Connors' record of 27 consecutive GS QFs. Hang on, Jimbo didn't even play the AO most of his career and missed quite a few Roland Garrosi too. So, yeah, 27 straight if you just count London and New York. Actually, that's pretty good, cos it's probably over a decade!

Fed will have one last blast a la Sampras - in fact, he's still better on all surfaces than Pete was at age 29. I can see him winning one or both of Wimb/Olympics 2012 and then quitting. It sucks that he'll likely never eclipse Sampras' weeks-at-#1 record.
― Michael Jones, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 14:54 (fourteen years ago)
I like that Fed can't win matches purely on rep - hate it when I see champs play raggedly but still win b/c of pussy opponents. Sampras benefited a few times from that - Wim '00, and US '02, the grossest Slam of all. I dare say that yes, Fed will benefit from it at some future point too. He shouldn't have tanked the Estorils and Romes of the world if he wanted that No 1 record!

Bepa breaks in the second! She's also playing well. This is actually a good match! No one has cried or hit themselves yet!

Fuck a 9 to 5.

Great net play from Bepa, the perfect way to combat Tsveti's junk. More plz.

one net cord set point each!

I'm not used to this happy feeling watching a tennis match involving a favorite.
― abcfsk, Thursday, 1 July 2010 13:23 (fourteen years ago)
Come on Bepa! Please don't choke this one...
― katstevens, Thursday, 1 July 2010 13:27 (fourteen years ago)
Bepa firmly in control. This is not a story that necessarily ends well :/
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 1 July 2010 13:30 (fourteen years ago)
Nah, this is NU-BEPA.
― I want to thank my psychiatrist (billy), Thursday, 1 July 2010 13:41 (fourteen years ago)
I sincerely hope so
― I am utterly and abjectly pissed off with this little lot (Tom D.), Thursday, 1 July 2010 13:42 (fourteen years ago)
I thought we had Nu-Bepa last year, then came that meltdown at the USO to Pennetta.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 1 July 2010 13:44 (fourteen years ago)
And here we are. Pironkova with BPs.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 1 July 2010 13:45 (fourteen years ago)
I think we navigated the danger zone successfully! Great points at the end.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 1 July 2010 13:47 (fourteen years ago)
And she holds, because she is NU-BEPA. Hottt dudes in her box too.

Hmmmmmm
― I am utterly and abjectly pissed off with this little lot (Tom D.), Thursday, 1 July 2010 14:16 (fourteen years ago)
Maybe... if she can stay as calm s in this match, a close fight could lead to her winning. Or maybe Serena will just waltz over her in revenge of the sour, press conference-less doubles loss.
― abcfsk, Thursday, 1 July 2010 14:23 (fourteen years ago)
It's certainly not a slam dunk for Serena. Lost in how brilliantly she's serving is the fact that she really hasn't been that spectacular off the ground. I think Bepa can hang in w/ Serena in rallies, judging on form. Though Serena has usually turned it up to demolition mode in finals.
― I want to thank my psychiatrist (billy), Thursday, 1 July 2010 14:31 (fourteen years ago)
I would say that Kvitova's come out firing, but "firing" is Kvitova's only mode. Sometimes, she's firing balls into the court, and sometimes, she's firing them into a tree at 100mph.
That was a great volley from her though!
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 1 July 2010 14:36 (fourteen years ago)

Kvitova's volleying is a revelation. I didn't know she could do that!!
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 1 July 2010 14:40 (fourteen years ago)
I know! I just looked up and went 'whuh?' Talk about grabbing the match by scruff of its neck

It's less of a squawk and more of a little dog barking (v endearing)! 2 set points saved, 1 to go...
― katstevens, Thursday, 1 July 2010 15:14 (fourteen years ago)
I guess I consider it a squawk because she looks like a velociraptor.
― I want to thank my psychiatrist (billy), Thursday, 1 July 2010 15:15 (fourteen years ago)
I think Kvitova only does it when she gets over-excited - she wasn't doing it when I saw her against Zheng last week!
Bleh, Serena service winner on SP. Obviously.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 1 July 2010 15:18 (fourteen years ago)

turned on Berdych Djokovich in the second set and shocked to see Berdych won the first one. Not looking like a scorcher right now but maybe it will pick up.
― Gee, Officer (Gukbe), Friday, 2 July 2010 13:21 (fourteen years ago)
woah okay, Berdych just broke Djovokich because of the latter's horrendous overhead miss. 6-5 to Berdych and its his serve.
― Gee, Officer (Gukbe), Friday, 2 July 2010 13:28 (fourteen years ago)
absurd point to give Djokovich an Advantage and a Break Point.
― Gee, Officer (Gukbe), Friday, 2 July 2010 13:33 (fourteen years ago)
also totally aware of my awful Djokovic spelling here. typing and looking away etc...
― Gee, Officer (Gukbe), Friday, 2 July 2010 13:34 (fourteen years ago)
and he breaks. 6-6 2nd set. it's really picked up in the last few games.
― Gee, Officer (Gukbe), Friday, 2 July 2010 13:35 (fourteen years ago)
tuned in as Berdych was serving for the second - some great points already! not really surprised, def would've predicted Berdych...
Novak in Cyrillic script gives us HOBAK. How did I not know this before.

― Gee, Officer (Gukbe), Friday, 2 July 2010 13:47 (fourteen years ago)
don't think Berdych can really come back from losing 4 set points though.
― Gee, Officer (Gukbe), Friday, 2 July 2010 13:48 (fourteen years ago)
wow from 6-2 up...the 6-4 point was a huge Berdman choke, but Hobak has been incredible since
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 2 July 2010 13:48 (fourteen years ago)
he's been so calm and cool, but starting to wonder whether Berdych is going to need the Heimlich.
― Gee, Officer (Gukbe), Friday, 2 July 2010 13:51 (fourteen years ago)
Never mind. Djokovic double faults. 2 sets down he is.

Murray should retire and hope for a Nadal injury for next year's imo
― Gee, Officer (Gukbe), Friday, 2 July 2010 15:07 (fourteen years ago)
well, looking at the scoreboard they appear to be on level terms...?
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 2 July 2010 15:20 (fourteen years ago)
switching between the match and the football, so i'm probably just seeing the class Nadal moments, but he still just looks miles better than Murray to me.
― Gee, Officer (Gukbe), Friday, 2 July 2010 15:27 (fourteen years ago)
Murray is getting his first serve in for once (76% sez slam tracker) but is hitting plenty of shots into the net to make up for it.
― katstevens, Friday, 2 July 2010 15:46 (fourteen years ago)
Murray's playing really well and threatening the Nadal serve almost every time but seems to just miss on every crucial point that would give him the break.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 2 July 2010 15:59 (fourteen years ago)
And he's got 2 BPs against Nadal! Blimes.

Gah.
Gamewise...they're pretty even. Mentally...Rafa is streets ahead.

great BH DTL there though, love that sudden change of direction

xp lots of deuces on the Nadal serve in this set
And loses them (only ones so far). Maybe he would feel better if he had a shave?
― katstevens, Friday, 2 July 2010 16:14 (fourteen years ago)
he should really really shave. such a slob.

― Gee, Officer (Gukbe), Friday, 2 July 2010 16:43 (fourteen years ago)
a decent way to give yourself a sliver of hope, that.
― NYC Goatse.cx and Flowers (Merdeyeux), Friday, 2 July 2010 16:43 (fourteen years ago)
re: luck, it was like the inverse of the QF, where tsonga looked the better player until he stupidly left that ball in the TB and then died. you create your own luck; if Murray had taken any of his many chances thru that 2nd set, he wouldn't have been beholden to luck.
and he's broken Rafa finally! a 1-6 in the 4th loss, here we come.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 2 July 2010 16:43 (fourteen years ago)
I mean that volley after the DF told you almost everything about rafa tbh.
I think this year's US open might be his best chance if Nadal is on his end of season slump and Fed hasn't recovered but what does that say about Murray if needs all these external factors to come in to play? xxxp = even with the break, yeah.
― xyzzzz__, Friday, 2 July 2010 16:47 (fourteen years ago)

apparently Murray's won more points in this match, which makes sense. he's playing well, but he can't win the key points, and when one comes along you just know what will happen.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 2 July 2010 16:58 (fourteen years ago)
thank you lexy!
― so sick of the fucking V8 commercials (surm), Friday, 2 July 2010 17:00 (fourteen years ago)
what does that say about Murray if needs all these external factors to come in to play?
indeed. it's frustrating: he absolutely has the game to beat anyone in the world. roger and rafa included. and he's done so. and he's not so mentally weak that we get novotna-esque dramatics. but he...juuuuust doesn't win the key points in big matches.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 2 July 2010 17:02 (fourteen years ago)
lol novotna is still my go-to big-points reference

Weirdly, the way Djokovic and Murray lost seemed identical to me, and not just because of the scorelines. The manner of their losing was so similar. It was a bit like watching the same match twice.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 2 July 2010 18:20 (fourteen years ago)
I want Nadal to win the most slams ever.. yeah, yeah, he's my first favorite tennis player. I'm not gonna drop a good thing and get a new favorite when Nadal is such a nice dude who can rock long hair and neon clothing. And his game is real fun to watch
Murray happens to be my least favorite player
― serious nonsense (CaptainLorax), Friday, 2 July 2010 21:11 (fourteen years ago)
Nadal has been awesome. For a couple of rounds he didn't look great at all and to reach the final is fantastic.
Berdych has impressed.
Murray has never given this 'will never win a slam vibe' thing. I think he's been good to reach the SFs given the form he was showing coming up to Wimbledon. Still reckon he'll win the US Open.

What the...
3 dfs from Serena?
― my funny mommy hole, sweet funny mommy hole (HI DERE), Saturday, 3 July 2010 13:47 (fourteen years ago)
Yay
― my funny mommy hole, sweet funny mommy hole (HI DERE), Saturday, 3 July 2010 13:49 (fourteen years ago)
And gets the set, finally. Her 2nd serve is surprisingly bad today - only 27% of points won on it (I <3 slam tracker).
― katstevens, Saturday, 3 July 2010 13:50 (fourteen years ago)
Oh dear, what was that last shot Bepa.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 3 July 2010 13:54 (fourteen years ago)
Oh shit, don't break down
― my funny mommy hole, sweet funny mommy hole (HI DERE), Saturday, 3 July 2010 13:54 (fourteen years ago)
Argh I fear Bepa is not in a good position.
― katstevens, Saturday, 3 July 2010 13:54 (fourteen years ago)
Man, Serena is brilliant
― my funny mommy hole, sweet funny mommy hole (HI DERE), Saturday, 3 July 2010 13:57 (fourteen years ago)
Takes balls to do that 2nd serve in exactly the same place (but in, obv) after successful challenge on the 1st...
― katstevens, Saturday, 3 July 2010 14:02 (fourteen years ago)
TOWEL OVER FACE
― katstevens, Saturday, 3 July 2010 14:10 (fourteen years ago)
Serving to stay in the match. Aw well Bepa at least you didn't get bageled.
― katstevens, Saturday, 3 July 2010 14:14 (fourteen years ago)
Well this could be a nailbiter.
― Born too beguiled (DavidM), Saturday, 3 July 2010 14:15 (fourteen years ago)
^Sorry that was meant for the Ger-Arg match, not this obviously.
― Born too beguiled (DavidM), Saturday, 3 July 2010 14:16 (fourteen years ago)
Congrats Serena! 66 minutes.
― katstevens, Saturday, 3 July 2010 14:21 (fourteen years ago)
Over an hour, no bagel or breadstick. Back in the top 10 and a Wimbledon RU is a good addition to her CV. Decent enough. Take the doubles tomorrow, Bepa!
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 3 July 2010 14:24 (fourteen years ago)
looool "Venus gave it to me" re: the necklace, Venus was asked earlier in the tournament about that and had no idea
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 3 July 2010 14:30 (fourteen years ago)
Great job, Serena. 13 Slams, that is an insane number when just a few years ago, no one thought she'd ever win again.
And I think Bepa has a lot to be proud of, and I really hope she gets the doubles. Which is later today, Lex!
― I want to thank my psychiatrist (billy), Saturday, 3 July 2010 14:53 (fourteen years ago)
The doubles final is really really good!
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 3 July 2010 18:18 (fourteen years ago)
It's been a long time coming, but here we are with the Bepa tears and racket-throwing. I'll be shocked if she and Vesnina come back now.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 3 July 2010 18:37 (fourteen years ago)
This is gripping, but also kinda painful to watch.
― Born too beguiled (DavidM), Saturday, 3 July 2010 18:52 (fourteen years ago)
;_;
― Born too beguiled (DavidM), Saturday, 3 July 2010 18:58 (fourteen years ago)
Masha took the most games out of Serena...yaaay
Sorry, just trying to find positives in this. Was rooting HARD for Vera to take the doubles final after singles final tears. She held up well until 3-4... damnit. This was a positively great run, though, and she just has to find the positives in this unless she's truly crazy.
Back to school, good luck with the forthcoming international economy exams!
― abcfsk, Saturday, 3 July 2010 21:54 (fourteen years ago)
lolz at that quote from Frank Leboeuf. Fraid it was an easy switch to the footie and not even a final at that. One more week to go :-)
Nadal in straight sets? You'd think not and then...
― xyzzzz__, Saturday, 3 July 2010 22:03 (fourteen years ago)
Lex is really missing out by hating the football, no sights like this:
http://eyecandy.abzolute.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Roque-Santa-Cruz-4.jpg
for him. Djokovic Schmokovic.
I'm not too excited about tomorrow because I'm expecting a Nadal stroll. The weight of my pleasure is on your shoulders, Tomas.
― NYC Goatse.cx and Flowers (Merdeyeux), Saturday, 3 July 2010 22:28 (fourteen years ago)
I didn't realize Vania King was in the women's final! Woot
― my funny mommy hole, sweet funny mommy hole (HI DERE), Sunday, 4 July 2010 00:23 (fourteen years ago)
WHO IS THAT FOOTBALL PLAYER?! O_O
King won the doubles! She was charming, I was sad for Bepa (and felt even worse for Vesnina, who was basically playing on her own in the second set) but King and Shvedova are great too. Bepa is already a Wimbledon (mixed doubles) champ already.
Aargh Boris Becker shut up, he is such an appalling stating-the-obvious commentator.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Sunday, 4 July 2010 13:06 (fourteen years ago)
As for Bepa, no reason to think this will be her last Slam final. It's her worst surface (though obviously she's not really weak on any surface), clay is her best, and Roland Garros is going to be a total crapshoot for the foreseeable future. As I believe this year proved. And last year. And the year before.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Sunday, 4 July 2010 13:08 (fourteen years ago)
Nice scrambling from Berdych (WHAT?!) on that point.
― I want to thank my psychiatrist (billy), Sunday, 4 July 2010 13:27 (fourteen years ago)
That point in the fourth game was worth watching for on its own!
― two hats in 3/4 time (edwardo), Sunday, 4 July 2010 13:27 (fourteen years ago)
Oh but Boris has such an aura about him! Terrible.
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 4 July 2010 13:29 (fourteen years ago)
mcenroe keeps commenting on berdych's improved footwork and movement. seems otm thus far
― pearsonic, Sunday, 4 July 2010 13:31 (fourteen years ago)
didn't even realize Henman was commentating until a few minutes ago.
Also, break points ahoy for Nadal :(
― Gee, Officer (Gukbe), Sunday, 4 July 2010 13:40 (fourteen years ago)
well, that was impressive. Berdych playing really well and that Rafa just steps up, plays a few great shots and breaks just like that.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Sunday, 4 July 2010 13:42 (fourteen years ago)
neither did I, can't work out whether it was because he wasn't there earlier and got to the booth late, or whether because his voice just went in one ear and out the other
Impressive as usual. Best shot was obv the one to bring the 3 break points. Watch those rafa specials on a loop all day.
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 4 July 2010 13:43 (fourteen years ago)
I think Rafa's forehand is even more effective a kill shot this year.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Sunday, 4 July 2010 13:48 (fourteen years ago)
Maybe Henman was waiting for Boris to wear himself out a bit.
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 4 July 2010 13:49 (fourteen years ago)
Man, after a pretty even start Rafa just ran away with that.
― I want to thank my psychiatrist (billy), Sunday, 4 July 2010 13:51 (fourteen years ago)
That was a bit like yesterday's first set. The way Bepa dominated her first three service games - and even pushed Serena in hers - gave a false impression of how effective she could be when Serena stepped up.
(I think Berdych is likely to show us more than Bepa did from here on in though.)
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Sunday, 4 July 2010 13:52 (fourteen years ago)
berdych break point!
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 4 July 2010 13:54 (fourteen years ago)
lolz just getting excited there for a sec
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 4 July 2010 13:55 (fourteen years ago)
third break point...Nadal's having one of his brief, temporary dips.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Sunday, 4 July 2010 13:58 (fourteen years ago)
Berdman really should've made that pass.
blame it on the wind
― Gee, Officer (Gukbe), Sunday, 4 July 2010 14:00 (fourteen years ago)
OK. This is a terrible service game from Rafa. These aren't going to come along too often. If Berdych can't take advantage here...
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Sunday, 4 July 2010 14:00 (fourteen years ago)
really should have broken him there. it doesn't bode well for berdych.
― Gee, Officer (Gukbe), Sunday, 4 July 2010 14:02 (fourteen years ago)
Might have been too early to break. Berdych has to serve better more consistently first.
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 4 July 2010 14:04 (fourteen years ago)
berdych is already down a set, needs to open up and go for winners. not going to win many long pts off the baseline
― pearsonic, Sunday, 4 July 2010 14:05 (fourteen years ago)
berdman a great chance for 0-30. clips a drop shot into the net. ughhhhhhhh
― pearsonic, Sunday, 4 July 2010 14:07 (fourteen years ago)
Lucie Safarova in the players' box! I love Lucie.

Hey, Marton Fucsovics is winning the boys' final. You'll recall that his name would be pronounced Futchovitch, of course.
― two hats in 3/4 time (edwardo), Sunday, 4 July 2010 14:25 (fourteen years ago)
do they pick commentators based on how likely they are to start harping on about bloody serve and volleying?
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Sunday, 4 July 2010 14:36 (fourteen years ago)
Berdych taking precisely none of his half-chances on Rafa's serve.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Sunday, 4 July 2010 14:41 (fourteen years ago)
Oh dear.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Sunday, 4 July 2010 14:43 (fourteen years ago)
and there. we. have. it.
― pearsonic, Sunday, 4 July 2010 14:43 (fourteen years ago)
So much for Nu-Berdych.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Sunday, 4 July 2010 14:44 (fourteen years ago)
Hell of a pass to win it with.
― Michael Jones, Sunday, 4 July 2010 15:29 (fourteen years ago)
'Gratz Rafa.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Sunday, 4 July 2010 15:35 (fourteen years ago)
Both started really well, the first six games were the best of the match and during those it really looked like it could be a classic. Then Rafa visibly stepped up and made Berdych look hapless at the end of the first set, and that seemed to inform the rest of the match - even though it was just one set, thereafter Berdych was basically just fighting to keep it close, and never looked like he thought he could win, even when Rafa presented chance after chance to him. He was brainless by the end. Like Silliams' win yesterday, the manner of Rafa's winning reinforced what makes him great.
Anyway! Roll of honour!
Men's singles: Rafael NadalWomen's singles: Serena WilliamsMen's doubles: Jürgen Melzer & Philipp PetzschnerWomen's doubles: Vania King & Yaroslava ShvedovaMixed doubles: Leander Paes & Cara BlackBoys' singles: Marton FucsovicsGirls' singles: Kristyna PliskovaBoys' doubles: Liam Broady & Tom FarquharsonGirls' doubles: Timea Babos & Sloane Stephens
Kristyna P joins her twin Karolina, who won the AO girls' singles, as a junior Slam champ! And may Fucsovics find great, commentator-baiting success in the seniors.

some great names there
― nakhchivan, Sunday, 4 July 2010 18:20 (fourteen years ago)
great names in the juniors that sadly fell by the wayside included Agustina Sol Eskenazi, Grace Sari Ysidora, Doroteja Eric, Luksika Kumkhum, Chanelle Van Nguyen, Nigina Abduraimova, Santa Shumilina and Zarah Razafimahatratra. And that was just from skimming the girls' draw alone.
