Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 24 June 2010 16:14 (fourteen years ago)

maybe should've included Toews, Kane, & Versteeg along w/ Hossa but it works

there was a hilarious caller on some morning show today decrying the Byfuglien trade b/c "I just started following the Hawks in the playoffs and he's my favorite player"

dude sounded like he was gonna off himself

Mahindra Satyam people (dan m), Thursday, 24 June 2010 16:16 (fourteen years ago)

"Shame u have to root for Kane and Toews etc. now that you just started being a fan, you fuckface" is more like it.

Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 24 June 2010 16:17 (fourteen years ago)

I dont begrudge anybody for becoming a new fan. the NHL should be trying to cultivate newcomers to the sport, after shooting themselves in the foot for so long. I don't have a problem with the caller. Plus Byfglien was a black guy in a city with a big minority population. Maybe the guy who called was a member of a community that doesnt traditionally follow hockey? Again, no problem with that here.

Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Thursday, 24 June 2010 16:30 (fourteen years ago)

i think it was a decent move -- gotta make choices with yr toews/kane/hossa, and buff wasn't very consistent. and they got a pretty good return.

it is pretty sucky that you win the cup and two weeks later -- before the victory parades are even over -- big parts of the team are gone.

i can kinda see that caller's point, too -- byfuglien does seem like a folk-hero type of player.

Former Carolina Hurricanes captain Rod Brind'Amour will announce his retirement Wednesday afternoon, but will remain with the team in some capacity, a source told ESPN.com.

Brind'Amour, who will turn 40 in August, played in 1,484 regular-season games and 159 postseason games, collecting a total of 1,295 points.

He led the Hurricanes to their only Stanley Cup championship in 2006.

Brind'Amour had served as the Hurricanes' captain from August 2005 to January, when Eric Staal, 25, was named captain. Brind'Amour remained an assistant captain.

makes sense. He gets the equivalent of about the $10 million per year he wanted and the team isn't crippled by having to take a 10 million salary cap hit.

Of course, as long as they're doing it this way, why not make it a 30 year contract or whatever?

Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Tuesday, 20 July 2010 13:27 (fourteen years ago)

the devils look less and less like a cup team every day. i don't wanna knock kovalchuk and i definitely don't wanna knock volchenkov, i guess it's mostly because brodeur keeps gettign older and there's no solution back there, and they still have some JUNK contracts and now there's no space to re-up parise next year.

Quantic Dream, So Hard To Beat (Will M.), Tuesday, 20 July 2010 13:59 (fourteen years ago)

NHL rejects Kovalchuk contract for salary cap circumvention

peter in montreal, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 13:17 (fourteen years ago)

Good god. A fucking league is going to step in and interfere with a contract NOW???????

Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 13:18 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, I figured that since they allowed the Hossa contract, the NHL was basically ok with this sort of thing.

Anyway, I guess at most they'll remove the last 1 or 2 years off the contract and then it'll be ok.

peter in montreal, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 13:21 (fourteen years ago)

To be fair, the Hossa contract pays 3.5m a year in the last 4 years, and is only 12 years. The Kovy contract was 17 YEARS and teh last 4 or 5 years paid under a mill. While the former is bad, the latter is like OBSCENE.

that said though i wouldn't be surprised if this was enough for him to say fuck it, i'm going to the khl.

Quantic Dream, So Hard To Beat (Will M.), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 13:57 (fourteen years ago)

Obscene is a good word. He would have been 40 by the time he was done with the contract.

Danny Dyer (dan m), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 15:05 (fourteen years ago)

he would have been 44 -- an age at which only .02% of players are still in the league.

it's kind of ridiculous, but i guess i can't really blame teams/players for exploiting the loophole. MAYBE THE YEAR'S SALARY RATHER THAN THE ANNUAL CONTRACT AVERAGE SHOULD COUNT AGAINST THE CAP

mookieproof, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 17:29 (fourteen years ago)

They can't retroactively do that or half the teams in the league would immediately be over the salary cap, i reckon.

my awesome solution: cap = whichever is higher: avg of entire contract or avg of all years player is 35 or under. so for the kovy one it'd be from age 27-35 counted, so 2010/11 through 2017/18, which probably evens out to like 9 mill cap hit. Since they already have that over 35 rule they clearly consider 35 a magic number.

Quantic Dream, So Hard To Beat (Will M.), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 17:37 (fourteen years ago)

if you counted the year's salary rather than the average against the cap you'd just have different kinds of crazy contracts which circumvent the salary cap.

maybe make it the average for the next 4 years of the contract or something

peter in montreal, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 17:42 (fourteen years ago)

Obscene is a good word. He would have been 40 by the time he was done with the contract.

― Danny Dyer (dan m), Wednesday, July 21, 2010 11:05 AM (2 hours ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

Obscene is giving a guy who attempted murder on the ice a new, rich contract. Obscene is not trying to use a loophole to sign the top free agent on the market.

Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 17:54 (fourteen years ago)

which attempted murderer we talking about?

and i still think 'obscene' applies just, you know, not as literally.

Quantic Dream, So Hard To Beat (Will M.), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 18:03 (fourteen years ago)

Todd Bertuzzi. His mere presence in the league is obscene. Devils arent doing anything that hasnt done before, with Luongo, Pronger, Hossa, etc. And if the league doesnt like it, they can fix the loophole when the CBA runs out in '12 (I think). Until then, their prior approval of these deals means they're dead if Kovalchuk and his agent fight the ruling.

i imagine they will improve somewhat, but the signs are not promising.

they've dressed 15 skaters because signing kovalchuk put them over the cap. they've scratched kovalchuk for unspecified reasons. there is a strained relationship with the captain (langenbrunner). parise will be a restricted free agent after this season -- how can they possibly re-sign him? their coach is a rookie who seems to have communication problems. and lou has made a habit of firing successful coaches.

and kovalchuk is tied for 118th in scoring.

def not getting overexcited about the kings, but this odds n ends from ESPN is amazing for the names and numbers,

"Quick's 10-1-0 record represents the best start by a Kings goalie since 1992-93, the only season that the franchise made it to the Stanley Cup finals. Robb Stauber began that season 9-1 with a tie. ... Islanders G Rick DiPietro, whose comeback season has started out with a 2-3-2 record and 4.21 goals-against average, was the backup for the fifth straight game. He is 63-58-18 with a 2.79 GAA since signing a 15-year, $67.5 million contract in September 2006 -- which at the time was the longest in NHL history. DiPietro was limited to 13 games over the previous two seasons because of operations on both knees and hips. ... Roloson, the oldest goalie in the league at 41, has 192 career wins -- the lowest total among the nine goalies who have played in the NHL after their 41st birthday and appeared in more than 10 games during their careers. The next-lowest total is Eddie Johnston's 234."

I remember the passion of several years of back and forth regular season and playoff series, of the Wings shelling Roy for 9 goals and driving him out of Montreal, of the brawls, and yes, I remember a dirty cheap shot. To reduce it all to that one incident cheapens both teams -- who won a lot of trophies in those years, I might add, while the Hawks and the Devils and worthless teams like Dallas and San Jose were shit and didn't win anything.

Seeing Savard get concussed once again the other night, against the Avalanche, and seeing him bawling as he's being helped off the ice, was absolutely gut-wrenching.

Michel Goulet, a concussion veteran, offers good insight on how these injuries create their own vicious circle:

“When I tried to come back, it looked like to me ... I had the impression that everything was going 100 miles per hour. And when you look at Marc and anyone else who is going through this or went through it, every one of them, if they’re not fine -- and I don’t think he was, from what I saw even before that game -- you can’t react. You’re too slow and you’re so wide open to get hit again, and you don’t have time to react."

so colin campbell 'recused himself' from the chara judgment because his kid plays for the bruins.

a) it doesn't really look any better that one of his underlings concluded that his son's teammate should not be suspended

b) every other decision he's made has an impact, however indirectly, on his son's team (i guess it didn't matter before this year, because no amount of favoritism could have helped the panthers)

mookieproof, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 22:06 (fourteen years ago)

the call is interference, not, like, boarding or cross checking or something. I don't know that you can suspend someone for interference. there's not even a slippery slope thing, it's just gay as all hell. tough break, but them's the breaks...

this kind of thing is as bad or worse than any headshot I've seen and should be punished in the same way. I don't pretend to be an expert on nhl rules, but if this kind of thing doesn't merit a suspension then there's something wrong with the rules and they should be changed.

so if this wasn't pachioretty would montreal be calling for heads? BS.

The Scenario (chrisv2010), Thursday, 10 March 2011 14:56 (fourteen years ago)

well of course not. no hockey fans care about other teams players.

I'm pretty sure if the situation was reversed, you'd have boston fans complaining very loudly and lots of montreal fans trying to defend the hit.

That doesn't really prove anything though, most sports fans are terrible people.

I'm trying to stay objective about this and I honestly think I would not think this is a clean hit no matter who was involved. And I think that if it's a clean hit according to the rules, then the rules should be changed. Players should be required to be aware of their surroundings and a hit in one area of the ice should be treated differently from a hit somewhere else if the potential for serious injury is different.

Eerily reminiscent of how the B's let themselves be shut out 3-zip by the Pens last year on their first meeting post-Cooke/Savard. There was, granted, a semblance of vengeance there, but it was just that - a semblance: a politely consensual bout between Thornton and Cooke.

AZ blogger Dan Bickley is pissed

Detroit fans: If you can't stay away, please wear white

Regrets? We have a few. By stumbling down the stretch and leaving numerous points on the table, the Coyotes coughed up home-ice advantage and slid into a sticky first-round playoff series against Detroit.

As always, the opponent and the task feels enormous.

So, a plea to all Red Wings fans living in the Valley:

If you must go to the games in Arizona, please wear white. We don't want outsiders thinking we can't sell out playoff games. After all we've been through - from bankruptcy hearings to relocation threats - the last thing we need is more national embarrassment.

A sea of red at Jobing.com Arena would do just that.

If you're a Detroit fan who otherwise cheers for the Coyotes, understand what this does to your second-favorite hockey team, and how deflating it must be to take the ice for a playoff game and hear:

"Let's go Red Wings!"

By the way, that chant broke out at a Valley restaurant Monday morning.

Yep, it's starting already. And in the end, the Coyotes have no one to blame but themselves.

ahahahahahaha

no man I root for the Canes. playoffs this year are for me yr classic "which teams do you kinda like? which ones will play best in later rounds? which individual players do you like?" so like I'm a big Lundqvist fan + I hate the Caps so even though Ovechkin's an exciting player who deserves to see later rounds I'm rooting for NY in that series. (NY will lose btw.) I root for Pittsburgh because they are a class organization in my opinion, even though I have a totally stupid affection for Tampa (because: when I bought the N64 hockey game in '96, I arbitrarily chose Tampa to be my team. They won the Cup on my console that year!) I root for Vancouver in Vancouver vs. Chicago because I spent time on a tour bus with a Vancouver band and soaked up some of the native Vancouver hatred for the Blackhawks. (Which btw is seriously some of the most intense, genuine sports-hate I've ever experienced - it's like, people who don't otherwise much care about the game are like "I know what I hate: the Blackhawks"). I root for L.A. in their series because my back-home friends love L.A. Etc. In my heart I hope the Habs take it all I gotta admit.

absolutely, every expat i know here delights in any canucks failure...

some reasons are:

1. We are bandwagon fairweathery fans who freak out if anything at all goes wrong (prob true)
2. Lots of fans don't grow up playing ice hockey, and are thus not as knowledgeable as other canadians (generally not true. also, we are immigrants here! from hot asian countries! not everyone can afford mornings in ice rinks)
3. Our teams are overhyped and picked to win every year, and every year we tragically/hilariously choke
4. Our teams are soft (more true in the Naslund-Cloutier era)

dblake (symsymsym), Wednesday, 20 April 2011 15:24 (fourteen years ago)

I can't speak for the whole country, but I grew up a Flames fan and therefore hate the Canucks with a passion second only to my hate of the Maple Leafs.

I'm in Montreal now though (which has fueled my Leafs rage) so its been hard to follow the Flames and I've pretty much changed my loyalties to the Habs.

Having said that, I really just want a Canadian team to win the whole thing so I'll cheer for the Canucks if they make it further than the Habs.

five gone cats from Boston (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 24 April 2011 02:44 (fourteen years ago)

guys, i'm really feeling hockey this year

J0rdan S., Sunday, 24 April 2011 02:46 (fourteen years ago)

i'm not sure if anything in sports is more nerve wracking than tied hockey in the final 10 mins of the third period/OT -- my dad is a huge sabres fan and truly i care minimally about them & even i felt like i was going down a rollercoaster for the entire time last night

this boston game has been great -- both teams kinda gakked on some chances but damn

J0rdan S., Sunday, 24 April 2011 02:48 (fourteen years ago)

the turnover/near breakaway > trip sequence was wild

johnny crunch, Sunday, 24 April 2011 02:49 (fourteen years ago)

also that was an obvious penalty shot imo

J0rdan S., Sunday, 24 April 2011 02:50 (fourteen years ago)

Thank god for the dvr. I'm really into the nuggets-thunder series so I have that on hold till the end of this. Then again I want to watch sharks-kings.damn, I love this time of year.

Thraft of Cleveland (Bill Magill), Sunday, 24 April 2011 02:50 (fourteen years ago)

what's the most nightmare stanley cup finals for the league? tampa v. san jose?

five gone cats from Boston (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 5 May 2011 02:09 (fourteen years ago)

or nashville

call all destroyer, Thursday, 5 May 2011 02:09 (fourteen years ago)

feel like nashville at least is a market that could conceivably still fit into the expanding-territories vision that caused the expansions in the first place - town is still in relatively good shape as vs. tampa which is like if you go down there half the business are boarded up and abandoned, it's like the twilight zone - gorgeous weather, palm trees, sense that a bunch of people up and left one day and didn't say why

five gone cats from Boston (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 5 May 2011 02:13 (fourteen years ago)

mookieproof, Thursday, 5 May 2011 03:58 (fourteen years ago)

Sharks have that look. Every playoffs a team gets that look, that they won't be denied, and this year it's San Jose. They're already halfway to equaling the Habs' 10 OT wins in 1993.

howard has never struck me as a capable playoff goalie

Frightening, but full of facts that are difficult to argue with. (dan m), Thursday, 5 May 2011 04:16 (fourteen years ago)

In Bettman's world I think the worst possible finals would be something like Edmonton vs Ottawa. He's hell bent on expanding the league anywhere in the south.

sofatruck, Thursday, 5 May 2011 04:34 (fourteen years ago)

it's always amusing when versus shows the cbc/tsn feed of two american teams playing each other (eg wings-sharks tonight)

the nhl takes canada totally for granted -- hope it doesn't eventually bite them in the ass

mookieproof, Thursday, 5 May 2011 04:40 (fourteen years ago)

Edmonton vs Ottawa would be pretty bad regardless, maybe make for some happy homer fans but neither team has demonstrated the ability to attract & keep real talent for many years.

Alderaan Duran (Will M.), Thursday, 5 May 2011 04:46 (fourteen years ago)

at least they've both gone to the finals in the last decade . . . which is more than you can say for a lot of teams

Thraft of Cleveland (Bill Magill), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 17:53 (fourteen years ago)

^^^nonsense

dude's head was up, he was watching the play when he got hit from the blindside. he didn't have the puck, wasn't anywhere near it and neither was the defending player.

your defense of dirtbag hits like it's some kind of wholesome part of the game is fucking tedious as hell, it's like those people who immediately yell SHOOOOOOOOOOOT IT when a player gets the puck in the high slot. you may as well be calling for rampant butt-ending with sticks and slashing to the face if 'all is fair'.

dan m, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 21:44 (fourteen years ago)

otm

bill must have appreciated thomas' hit on henrik, too. which i guess was fair, but if he's going to play that way maybe he should be run a little more often, especially considering how often he's out of the crease

mookieproof, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 22:04 (fourteen years ago)

the thing about the "old-time hockey!" schtick is that is was played-out back-when, too. there's the physical game (good) and then there's checking people away from the play (moronic), and this distinction has been true for people who actually like hockey for a hundred years. if you like pro wrestling, watch some fucking pro wrestling imo.

brad whitford, witchfynder general (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 22:22 (fourteen years ago)

the players are much bigger and much faster than they were during 'old time hockey' as well. however much you like hitting -- and there's still plenty of it -- it is in no one's interest to see players getting concussed like this.

mookieproof, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 22:31 (fourteen years ago)

also there are ridiculously strict penalties against team-mates doing the appropriate thing, which is kicking the offender's ass into the ice

dan m, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 23:14 (fourteen years ago)

You are so wrong it's sad. The guy was watching his pass, which every player is taught NOT to do from day one playing hockey. The guy deserved what he got, it's the Stanley Cup finals. You're defense of pussy-ass Red Wing style hockey is much more tedious. Seriously, go watch your old Soviet Red Army vs. Moscow Dynamo videos if you want to see ballet on ice. I'll continue watching and enjoying one of the more compelling Finals of the past decade.

Thraft of Cleveland (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 15:00 (fourteen years ago)

I mean, goddam, you are still mad that Scott Stevens put Kozlov to sleep in the '95 Finals (Has that guy even woken up yet?) Get the fuck over it man.

Thraft of Cleveland (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 15:03 (fourteen years ago)

Anybody that hates Scott Stevens knows less about hockey than the guy who yells shoot at the guy with the puck in the high slot. May I recommend field hockey? It may be more to your liking.

Thraft of Cleveland (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 15:04 (fourteen years ago)

Anybody that resorts to years-old beef to deflect discussion from the play in question is embarrassed about how wrong they are. Chicagoan hockey fans are all alike, they know next to nothing about the game and resort to this type of bluster when backed into a corner.

Brad Marchand kept punching and punching and punching.

And Daniel Sedin stood there and kept taking punch after punch after punch. Did Sedin wonder how many punches it would take for Marchand to get a penalty?

"Maybe after the fifth. But I took six. What can I do?" said Sedin, clearly agitated after being Marchand's punching bag in the third period.

An emotional Sedin said something afterward to referee Kelly Sutherland.

"I asked him why he didn't call the penalty. He said he was going to," Sedin said.

Marchand just shrugged off the moment.

"It was just heat of the moment, that stuff happens," the rookie said after Game 6.

Did Sedin say something to provoke Marchand?

"No, he didn't say anything before. He was just right there. ... He didn't say anything, he was just kind of taking it," the Bruins winger said.

Why did Marchand keep punching him then?

"Because I felt like it," Marchand said.

Holy mother of Jesus.

They did it.

I was puzzled by the Canucks' perfomance, I gotta admit. I expected more. They were banged up, no doubt, but I imagine their morale was sapped by Thomas and the B's suffocating physical play.

The two bummers last night: (1) Vancouver riots; (2) Savard wanted to be there, but wasn't medically cleared for flight.
