pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 11 July 2010 16:10 (fifteen years ago)

Who do you think will win?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 11 July 2010 16:10 (fifteen years ago)

I'm no octopus but I'm sayin Spain

gbx, Sunday, 11 July 2010 16:18 (fifteen years ago)

Spain.

But it makes a terrific change, really, to have a world cup final where either team would be a cheering winner; the opposite, for me, of eg 1990.

the pinefox, Sunday, 11 July 2010 16:25 (fifteen years ago)

i was quite happy with those 2 teams in the 1990 final (shame it was a shit game mind)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 11 July 2010 16:28 (fifteen years ago)

But a new winner is exciting. I do feel it will be a case of first goal the winner. The dutch are quite defensive this tournament compared to what they are usually. And Spain aren't exactly gonna attack for 90s mins either.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 11 July 2010 16:29 (fifteen years ago)

Prediction: 1-0 to Spain. I'm not really too bothered either way, but I think I'll start off cheering the Dutch (but pretending it's the Euro 2008 version, who really were worth watching).

I Ain't Committing Suicide For No Crab (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Sunday, 11 July 2010 16:35 (fifteen years ago)

Fun facts:

- first final ever not to feature Brazil, Argentina, Italy or Germany
- Holland are aiming for a 100% record through qualifiers and tournament
- 17 of the players in the two squads were youth players at either Ajax or Barcelona

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 11 July 2010 16:35 (fifteen years ago)

Not only it is the World Cup final, the game also sees the Netherlands defend their Unofficial Football World Champion title.

James Mitchell, Sunday, 11 July 2010 16:45 (fifteen years ago)

I was wondering about that! Assumed Spain would be holders tbh

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 11 July 2010 16:48 (fifteen years ago)

- 17 of the players in the two squads were youth players at either Ajax or Barcelona

― Ismael Klata, Sunday, July 11, 2010 4:35 PM (11 minutes ago) Bookmark

Yeah, amazing. That's like 1/3 of the combined squads!

Picked Holland before the tournament so gonna have to stick with them. But tbh I'd quite like Spain to win it. Much like last time when Italy were my pick but by the time the Final came round was rooting so hard for Zizou that I was crushed when France lost.

I want to see a game where Spain score early to see how a match unfurls from there. Holland reacted well to going behind against Brazil and I'd like to see how expansive Spain could become faced with a team attacking against them.

Eljero Elia Michele (pandemic), Sunday, 11 July 2010 16:52 (fifteen years ago)

I think a Spain goal first would be the best thing for the final. The Dutch couldn't just sit back & defend then.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 11 July 2010 16:57 (fifteen years ago)

i think germany will win

Zeno, Sunday, 11 July 2010 16:58 (fifteen years ago)

Anyone watching the ceremony? Just seen some elephants on the pitch and now some african lady is singing

StanM, Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:05 (fifteen years ago)

God no.

Don't! It's atrocious, of course. xp

StanM, Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:07 (fifteen years ago)

2-1 Holland

les yeux sans aerosmith (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:09 (fifteen years ago)

Your first word got deleted accidentally: "Spain 2-1 Holland"

StanM, Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:10 (fifteen years ago)

"on behalf of the president and the whole of South-Africa, thank you to all our new friends"

Yeah, in two hours you're that country we never hear about in that continent down there again. Enjoy it while it lasts.

StanM, Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:12 (fifteen years ago)

It will be 1-0, but who knows to.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:13 (fifteen years ago)

There he is, Nelson Mandela being driven onto the pitch on a golf cart

StanM, Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:15 (fifteen years ago)

did fifa put the same pressure on him that was exerted on Ronaldo in 98?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:16 (fifteen years ago)

Waved to the crowd for a couple of minutes and then left again. His health isn't very good anymore (hence: no speech or anything) and he's not able to watch the match, the Dutch pundit said here.

StanM, Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:23 (fifteen years ago)

Dutch TV has Joeri Mulder and Louis Van Gaal in their in-stadium studio.

StanM, Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:27 (fifteen years ago)

I saw Mandela speak in Trafalgar Square three or four years ago. He was introduced by June Sarpong, and followed by Jamelia :(

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:31 (fifteen years ago)

Spain to win I think, which would make me happy. Don't like this Holland side much, Robben and Sneider aside.

Matt DC, Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

That. I wanna see Spain prove their dominance and pass their way into history.

Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Mañana? (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:34 (fifteen years ago)

Unchanged teams btw apparently - Torres starts on bench.

Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Mañana? (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:35 (fifteen years ago)

Concerns about Villa playing centrally aside, Pedro played very well on Wednesday, bar that ridiculous 2 on 1, and if a change is needed Torres is still there. I don't expect him to make a mercurial improvement just cos it's the final tho.

Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Mañana? (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:37 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, Robben and Sneijder are the two things I like about Holland, for them alone I'd be OK with them winning, but I can't see past Spain (also, have money on them).

xposts

ailsa, Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

I'm a little ticked off at that free kick vs. Brazil that's been given as Sneijder's goal, makes a bit of a farce of the Golden Boot imo

Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Mañana? (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:39 (fifteen years ago)

I want the team who plays the best to win. No refereeing crap, no diving, like the match yesterday.

StanM, Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:39 (fifteen years ago)

eep i gotta get across town!

asking a dog for permission to throw a party (gbx), Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:40 (fifteen years ago)

Will be slightly disappointed if there's no refereeing crap and no diving.

Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Mañana? (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:41 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, Robben and Sneijder are the two things I like about Holland

agreed

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:42 (fifteen years ago)

The city of Amsterdam has announced it is now completely full.

StanM, Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:42 (fifteen years ago)

my system predicts spain, which i'm happy with. but i'd be happy with holland. i just hope it's a decent game. not long to go now.

Guru Meditation (Ste), Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:43 (fifteen years ago)

Don't remember much of 2006 except the Butt that Launched a Thousand Gifs, but sometimes in a final a moment like that is plenty.

Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Mañana? (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

Dutch TV pundit audibly tearing up as the players enter the pitch for their warm-up.

StanM, Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:47 (fifteen years ago)

Nice piece on ITV just now with Chiles, Southgate and Townsend being shown around a church which played a part in some of the worst violence in Soweto. Respectful and interesting and approx 10102024 times better than "Alan Shearer tackles apartheid".

ailsa, Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:48 (fifteen years ago)

Zidane had a great header & Buffon made a flying save a couple of minutes before the craziness. If he'd scored he'd be on his own at the top of the all-time list imo

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:49 (fifteen years ago)

There isn't a joke goes by on the bbc without Shearer filling in the punchline to show he got it too

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:51 (fifteen years ago)

Am controversially thinking of sticking with ITV, at least for the build-up. Chiles' irreverance is more fun than the earnest bollocks over on the Beeb.

Who's commentating on both? Mowbray/Lawro and Tyldesley/Beglin? If Craig Burley is on dis ting, I'm on dat other ting.

ailsa, Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:52 (fifteen years ago)

Lawro sounded in good humour on the radio this afternoon. I cannot put myself thru Tyldesley in any circumstance, and if nothing else I find Mowbray easier to tune out. Fiver for anybody who watches the whole match with the alternative Chris Moyles commentary.

Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Mañana? (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:54 (fifteen years ago)

The next pundit I hear who misuses the phrase "Total Football" is gonna be on my Raoul Moat list tho.

Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Mañana? (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:56 (fifteen years ago)

Desmond Tutu, Jacques Rogge, Kofi Annan, loads of celebs are there (Platini doesn't look like he's been in a hospital at all)

Dutch NOS is interviewing the Spanish queen! (diplomatic "Whatever happens, both teams are wonderful, etc")

StanM, Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:58 (fifteen years ago)

Rooting for the Dutch, but I don't know enough about the game or the teams to actually make a prediction. This --

I want the team who plays the best to win. No refereeing crap, no diving, like the match yesterday.

― StanM, Sunday, July 11, 2010 12:39 PM (16 minutes ago)

-- is extra-OTM.

Grisly Addams (WmC), Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:59 (fifteen years ago)

Dutch NOS is interviewing the Spanish queen! <- in front of the wall with sponsor logos, where they also interview the players and the coach. Vv weird.

StanM, Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:59 (fifteen years ago)

Seat of honor should have been given to El Pulpo Paul, just to see his calm regard of the game.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 11 July 2010 18:00 (fifteen years ago)

Van Gaal hopes Webb doesn't whistle too much, which he tends to do, and that has a big influence on both team's playing styles, he says.

StanM, Sunday, 11 July 2010 18:03 (fifteen years ago)

soul patches are gross: hup holland hup

colnagl (cozen), Sunday, 11 July 2010 18:04 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not buying this 'Spain's's defence is the best' schtick - they're great at breaking down attacks early, but not convinced by them as a back four

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 11 July 2010 18:10 (fifteen years ago)

Craig Burley on ITV. Back to the Beeb before I break stuff.

ailsa, Sunday, 11 July 2010 18:23 (fifteen years ago)

Alan Davies had Shearer on his 5 Live show this morning and they were completely taking the piss out of him and he didn't even notice.

James Mitchell, Sunday, 11 July 2010 18:25 (fifteen years ago)

Mugabe is there :-/

StanM, Sunday, 11 July 2010 18:25 (fifteen years ago)

C'mon Holland!

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 11 July 2010 18:28 (fifteen years ago)

brotherlovesdub, Sunday, 11 July 2010 18:36 (fifteen years ago)

The CBBC commentary team is currently explaining vuvuzelas to the kiddies.

James Mitchell, Sunday, 11 July 2010 18:37 (fifteen years ago)

spain is really shameless about diving, I think their first dive this game was within the first minute

les yeux sans aerosmith (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Sunday, 11 July 2010 18:37 (fifteen years ago)

It's been an excellent start. Hope we get a quick goal.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 11 July 2010 18:40 (fifteen years ago)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 11 July 2010 18:47 (fifteen years ago)

At least American football players don't fake injury. It makes a mockery of the sport.

brotherlovesdub, Sunday, 11 July 2010 18:48 (fifteen years ago)

Ismael, surely you've read enough football threads to know that vehemently disagreeing with refereeing decisions is pfunkboy's entire raison d'etre.

Guy Mowbray and Lawro are so fucking bad that I turned over to ITV

Press red button and put on CBBC commentary, they were playing music to liven it up.

James Mitchell, Sunday, 11 July 2010 19:21 (fifteen years ago)

Guy Mowbray is a fucking abomination

when Casillas punted one through the middle: "Great ball by Casillas for Villa..."

when that same ball bounced harmlessly through to Stekelenburg: "That was very unSpanish"

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Sunday, 11 July 2010 19:22 (fifteen years ago)

I'm beginning to consider the red button Moylesathon, at least you expect him to be a twat. The sheer level of "this is terrible" emanating from everyone on the BBC is doing my head in. It's not been that bad! There's been chances! RvP did something nice! Quite nice that they are ostensibly ripping into England's Howard Webb without actually explicitly saying he's awful.

ailsa, Sunday, 11 July 2010 19:23 (fifteen years ago)

With underrated aerosmith here, some moments but both teams look unsettled.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 11 July 2010 19:24 (fifteen years ago)

Tense first half. Spain's rhythm is off and I don't think that's particularly down to the Dutch. Nerves imo. They look like they've watched Brazil's goal against the Netherlands and figure they can thread a killer ball thru the middle. Need to chill out, get their passing on again and it'll come.

Not sure whether Webb's gonna have the nuts to send anybody off unless something especially egregious happens. Two Spanish yellows were both classic "I've booked one of theirs so I'd better even it up" chickenshit nonsense. Van Bommel looks capable of doing something stupid tho.

I'm enjoying this btw

Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Mañana? (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 11 July 2010 19:24 (fifteen years ago)

It's a bloody excellent match! Punditry, you and me are through

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 11 July 2010 19:25 (fifteen years ago)

also pfunkboy shut the fuck up about red cards, neither was a red card offence - both were 'strong yellow card' offences, but van Bommel's wasn't studs-showing and De Jong's was a clumsy, slightly cowardly attempt to win the ball

the game itself is kinda enthralling, everyone at the BBC can go to hell

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Sunday, 11 July 2010 19:25 (fifteen years ago)

Ramos' foul was a slightly harsh yellow IMO, Puyol's a cast-iron yellow

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Sunday, 11 July 2010 19:25 (fifteen years ago)

Hey, Ramos and Puyol perfectly capable of getting themselves booked but the Puyol foul was small beer and his first of the game.

wow can't believe alonso's still on the pitch

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 11 July 2010 19:27 (fifteen years ago)

The BBC panel all pishing themselves laughing as they invent the concept of purple cards for things worse than reds. I'm going to suck up my Burley rage and go over to ITV for the second half. Anyone watching them? Are they hating it and sucking the life out of it as well?

Puyol powered studs-first through Robben's ankle = yellow card - more of an attempt to win the ball than the MVB one but also more likely to cause injury

Puyol foul was small beer and his first of the game

Looked like a straightforward bookable foul to me. If that's the case, the argument that it's your first foul is kind of irrelevant.

Agree. This game is awful. The whole first round was terrible too. With all the talk of how superior football is because there are no timeouts etc, there is a lot of wasted time flopping, celebrating goals and arguing calls. The flopping, the ties, the penalty kick resolutions. Many, many huge issues with this sport that supporters blindly ignore.

I don't think I've actually really enjoyed a World Cup final. I wasn't allowed to stay up late enough to watch the 82 final. The 86 final was good, but ultimately won by The Man Who Punched The Ball In Against England. 90 and 94 were anticlimaxes. In 98 I wanted Brazil to win. 02 was one-sided and unmemorable. 06 started brightly, but all I can really remember is the Zidane headbutt.

Looked like a pretty even game to me; also quite intriguing, not dull despite some media attitudes. Could have gone either way. A pity the goal was disputed or dubious, for whatever reasons (not sure), but probably better to end that way than pens. Okay, Torres tries a through ball to Iniesta - he's offside at this point I'm sure - Dutch defender cuts it out, Fabregas picks up the ball, plays Iniesta thru - this time he's onside - goal. Think there's a decent case for Iniesta being given offside on the first pass but stand to be corrected.

The corner that wasn't given thirty seconds before that, though, took a huge looping deflection off the wall AND Casillas saved it - preposterous decision by Howard Webb (in fairness to him it was a very difficult match, is I think the official line here)

It's funny, i was saying before the match how there's been a preposterous amount of corners not given in this World Cup, but that one really took the biscuit. Also, i'm pleased for Muller but this thing of awarding the Golden Boot to the player with most assists is ridiculous. Assists are such a bullshit statistic.

The thing of awarding goals to takers of crossed free kicks that go in because they've deflected off an opposing player's head was pretty bogus too.

Indeed. I think Sneijder showed himself up for the egotist he is in this game too, with a couple of ridiculous long range shots when he had other options. He's not a very likeable guy really.

lucky for iniesta he finally got a shot directly on his right foot so as not to fuck up three one on ones in a single game. not as good as he's rated tho...not at all. was happy to see either side one tho in ldn the rush of people who weren't watching the game into the pub to sing "ole ole" once spain scored was really terrible....some of them even looked spanish too!

The corner that wasn't given thirty seconds before that, though, took a huge looping deflection off the wall AND Casillas saved it - preposterous decision by Howard Webb (in fairness to him it was a very difficult match, is I think the official line here)

Still trying to figure this one out... the ref obviously blew the call at a crucial time in the match and almost nothing was said about it later.

Since play stops anyway, why can't they actually stop the clock rather than just guessing how much time to put back on?

― brotherlovesdub, Sunday, 11 July 2010 21:58 (Yesterday) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

There are many things in play here as to why. Firstly, it is presumed that the amount of time a game will take would change and considering this is a sport that is too afraid of cameras telling correct decisions, sepp blatter would prefer to suck off platini's shaking body live on television than consider it. The second big reason: fear that stopping the play would lead to it being abused for television advertising purposes. The game still exists primarily for the enjoyment of the crowd, no matter what corny fuxx like myself who never go to games say, and so for them to wait two minutes between every throw in to advertise carlsberg would presumably drive down attendances. (this, even more than it being a ridiculously shit sport, is why i cannot watch that one super game of lol american football they show a year). Plus many other reasons.

fuque santa cruz (a hoy hoy), Monday, 12 July 2010 05:23 (fifteen years ago)

Fat Ronaldo being forced to play aside, 98 was shit. 2 Zidane goals from poorly marked corners, Fat Ronaldo missed two really good chances, Desailly sent off for something innocuous, Petit makes it look impressive with nearly the last kick of the ball. France flooded the midfield to kill the game from the start, playing with only Stephane Guivarc'h up front and even he got replaced by another midfielder on about the hour mark.

Hey Jabulani! Pope of four four two. (aldo), Monday, 12 July 2010 05:41 (fifteen years ago)

Ok I have read the thread.

Iniesta's tshirt said something about Daniel Sturridge moving to Chelsea, iirc.

This was the best fucking game. This was the best world cup I've lived through (i.e. no '86).

It had everything you could want. Karate kicks, intense chances, great saves, someone nearly scoring from the halfway line, pantomine villains (srs fuck you robben, if you easily rounded the keeper on your RIGHT FUCKING FOOT YES IT DOES EXIST you would have won the world cup), it had everything.

The tactical game was intense. Spain went for it and so the Dutch changed the game and stuck their foot in. The Spanish added width with Jesus Navas and so the Dutch bought on VDV to win the middle of the pitch, while van Persie went wide and Robben could use his speed to catch them on the break. Both keepers were excellent. van Bommel v. Xavi AND Busquets and De Jong v. Alonso was fucking mental. Sneijder scared the shit out of Pique; Iniesta had Matt Tyson (as the commentators kept calling him, think they just started calling him Tyson in the end) losing his marbles. Fouls were made. Of course they would be! It's the World Cup final and the likes of fucking Champions League winning creative midfielders Xavi, Iniesta and Sneijder done got on the ball, what you gonna do, let them pass? Spain were cunty and surrounded Coward Webb and fell over too easily but its Spain and I've already covered the pantomine villain aspect. I guess America doesn't understand this because their villains are into dog fighting and murdering and etc.

Football is not about goals, it is about drama. And this game had it more than any match I've seen since City beat Arsenal 4-2 w/ that Adebayor celebration. Plus now if I ever meet Casillas I want to give him a big hug.

fuque santa cruz (a hoy hoy), Monday, 12 July 2010 05:48 (fifteen years ago)

The world cup in general was the best fun as well and I finished it £30 up, thank you Forlan to score anytime bets.

France, England, Maradona and Italy bought the lols. Uruguay, Ghana and Paraguay bought the underdog fun. Portugal, Germany and Uruguay scored a shit load of goals. Maicons! Gios! Full backs killed it, again. Forlan finally got the appreciation he has deserved for the past five years - if only Freddie Kanoute also made it, ey? Suarez's celebration, not to mention his finish off the turn onto the post. So glad I chose Uruguay as my team.

Germany(/Bayern) and Spain(/more than a dna), and to a lesser extent Holland(/Ajax) have shown the world how it is done. England and France and Italy will never learn their lessons, the comedy value too high. Germany were the nuts in this world cup! After a decade of boring Ballack-Klose shit, it turns out that there was a very obvious solution to making the world root for them. Hope Capello takes the Ballack-to-Ozil step in his next team.

Plus lolbert green.

fuque santa cruz (a hoy hoy), Monday, 12 July 2010 05:57 (fifteen years ago)

Here's a thing, me and all the people I was watching with were laughing when Iniesta took his shirt off after scoring, because we were all sure he'd been booked in the first half. Lawro said as much at the time, something like "he's been booked before..." slightly off-mike. It was even mentioned in the commentary earlier when there was an Iniesta/van Bommel handbags thing and it looked like they were both going to be booked and the commentator talked about them both maybe being off. I was texting onimo at the time, and he was sure too.

So how did we all hallucinate it?

James Mitchell, Monday, 12 July 2010 07:41 (fifteen years ago)

Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Mañana? (Noodle Vague), Monday, 12 July 2010 07:41 (fifteen years ago)

It was a bookable offence and his second of such, don't really see what the quarrel is there - didn't think the boot to the chest was anything like a straight red either, dangerous play sure but not something that was gonna land anyone in the emergency ward. - Well done Spain for showing a lot of resilience (as did the Dutch against the likes of Brazil) against Chile, Paraguay and the Dutch. They were tested and came through every single time. Iniesta goal excellent. Glad it didn't go to penalties.

- Seen every final since Italia '90, and this has been the best one. Actually really good game. This and last WC have been great.

- Don't see why Holland won't 'ever win a WC' like someone upthread said. England may never win a WC tho'.

I actually quite like McCarra in that I used to know him and he is a decent bloke, but he suffers like all football journalists from this weird jaded romanticism that means they cannot celebrate or enjoy or relish ugliness in any form because they are so imbued with tired nostalgia.

The guardian has it worse than most. Bloody Richard Williams after the quarter-finals was bemoaning how these games (esp. uruguay-ghana, holland-brazil and spain-paraguay) left a bad taste in the mouth, stained the morality of the game, blah-de-fucking blah, when they were actually absolutely fucking brilliant because of the simple honest-to-good old-fashioned drama.

I'm not a footballing nihilist, but I do like a bit of rule-bending and comedy thuggery. Does this make me satan?

Pete W, Monday, 12 July 2010 11:30 (fifteen years ago)

Somebody being the heel is an essential part of a lot of great football matches, especially when you're more or less neutral. That said I wanted Spain to beat Holland's one-note kicking last night, but like I said at the time if Holland had combined their stopping tendencies with a little more commitment to the counter then they could've actually won the thing.

Football, like Art, has fuck all to do with morality afaic

Have you seen much WC, lj? The last group games do sometimes go into dullsville.

Maybe people who don't like low scoring games might like to try American sports?

Have any World Cup Winners scored fewer goals than Spain (on average)? There's a good one for the statisticians.

Oracle Crackers (Tom D.), Monday, 12 July 2010 11:57 (fifteen years ago)

Spain have the lowest total and the lowest average scored by the champions of any tournament. That's my kind of record.

Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Mañana? (Noodle Vague), Monday, 12 July 2010 12:00 (fifteen years ago)

from optajoe twitter 8 - Spain become the lowest scoring side to win the #worldcup with just eight goals to their name. Functional

sonderangerbot, Monday, 12 July 2010 12:02 (fifteen years ago)

I don't mind low-scoring games, but I don't particularly enjoy games in which a large number of the attacks fail on the edge of the penalty area, or through poor crosses and so on. It leads to feelings of frustration. The exception to this is when I am supporting a team, so for example I really enjoyed North Korea's defensive play against Brazil.

dubmill, Monday, 12 July 2010 12:02 (fifteen years ago)

NB I am totally not on this Beautiful Game nostalgists bollocks "THIS IS HOW THE GAME SHOULD BE PLAYED" shtick, but a) Spain are really fucking entertaining to watch imo and b) the 1-0 drubbing is maybe my favourite football score.

Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Mañana? (Noodle Vague), Monday, 12 July 2010 12:02 (fifteen years ago)

I've given up arguing with people who think loads of goals = fantastic football. I don't think I've ever succeeded in anything other than making them all o_O

Ismael Klata, Monday, 12 July 2010 12:03 (fifteen years ago)

OK, Spain weren't involved in THE dullest games, consider me agreeing with Pete W merely 95%. But there's such a thing as a 1-0 win done with a well-executed teamplan overcoming a side it might not otherwise beat, playing to the best of its ability and using resources well - and there's such a thing as a 1-0 where you have better players and you stumble cautiously over the line like a maiden aunt driving a Wrangler

LOOK I DON'T THINK FOOTBALL NEEDS LOADS OF GOALS TO BE FANTASTIC, DID I EVER SAY THAT?! HAVE I NOT PRAISED NUMEROUS LOW-SCORING GAMES FOR BEING GREAT? IN 2006 MY FAVOURITE GAMES WERE PORTUGAL 1-0 HOLLAND AND SWEDEN 0-0 TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO FFS

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Monday, 12 July 2010 12:05 (fifteen years ago)

I think it takes something special to win the World Cup through a series of 1-0 wins and still have commentators salivating.

Matt DC, Monday, 12 July 2010 12:07 (fifteen years ago)

Kind of disagree with "Holland tried to kick Spain into doing something memorable"... The first 10 minutes had Spain slotting several little balls behind the Dutch defense, it seemed like they were really going for it.

But sometimes you do shitloads of donuts round and round the carpark, play your music really loud, nearly flip the thing over a couple of times, spin a load more donuts, then vroom off into the distance parping the horn and flicking vees at passing old people.

Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Mañana? (Noodle Vague), Monday, 12 July 2010 12:10 (fifteen years ago)

You usually need a certain amount of goals just to shift the focus of the drama - I was getting frustrated by the passing up of chances as we went on last night. Not always though - again I'd cite Italy-Germany 2006 as the perfect match, but I appreciate it needed its godlike resolution to reach that pinnacle.

I'm really looking at things from a narrative-structural perspective though, which is not I think how anyone else watches football, so I tend to keep quiet in real life.

x-posts

I don't like the way Spain play football particularly, they stifle the opposition with possession which is every bit as tedious as ten men behind the ball and less prone to hilarious schedenfraude, and it doesn't have the tightrope drama of a great defensive display. Iniesta is a marvel, and the rest of them are outstanding technician but not in a way that makes me actually want to ever watch them play. (Cesc would make a big difference.) (I liked them in 08, especially Senna.)

On dullsville: Spain-Chile was so-so, Spain-Paraguay had a great two minutes and a whole lot of shit, and Spain-Germany was impressive but in a very antiseptic way, and it was sad to see the most entertaining team in the tournament drained of vim.

Spain are like watching a technically profficient but utterly tedious keyboard solo or something. This probably makes me horribly English, but I like a bit of rough about my football teams, a bit of wtf? With Spain you knew what you would get: lots of passing, almost as much pouting and a 1-0 victory.

And they do it all with such haughty, we-are-above-all-this, self-important grandeur.

Oh, and I also don't have a problem with low-scoring games at all. hell, I'm a Mourinho obsessive, how could i dare?

I was kidding.

I don't know much about Spanish footie beyond what I see in CL. I think 1-0s are simply a product of the specific way that Spanish team play. Weirdly not into counter-attacks or anything, but they really hold the ball in a way that just hasn't been attempted by an international side before. xp = sorta, yeah...the amount of times the BBC panel has said 'this is not exciting', the kind of 'we want goals' mentality, might go back to those results from the premiership. All I think about when I hear those scorelines is how crap the defending must have been for supposedly top sides.

None of you know me very well, do you?

Football works both as a narrative (and goals can only add to a narrative) and as a team effort (i.e. to overcome an opposition via attack AND defence) - a great game of football is a conglomeration of narrative and team will, and consequently be it 0-0 or 5-4, it can either be a thing of wonder or an error-strewn mess

and yeah, I HAVE seen a bad 5-4. Arsenal 5-4 Spurs a few seasons ago. Not a good game.

lj that was obviously a joek.

Is there a decent write up of that Dutch team anywhere? I feel that the reason why Spain were so god damn effective is because it was SO many players who are at the top of the game all at once, put together with smart tactics worked out, more or less together for years. In essence that should describe the total football Dutch team but were they all actually that good? Or in reality was it more of a 'Maradona makes this Argentina team look super awesome when they really only have a handful of decent players' but with Cryuff and Neeskens?

fuque santa cruz (a hoy hoy), Monday, 12 July 2010 14:19 (fifteen years ago)

Spain in 2008 beat Russia 3-0 and 4-1 and Greece and Sweden 2-1. The difference is that no one expected them to win the tournament, everyone thought of them as serial chokers. This time round everyone was terrified of them.

Just looking at that German team that lost in the 2008 final and it's amazing how much the team has changed in such a short time.

It takes a lot of work to disrupt Spain's midfield passing! Teams were putting in a massive shift, but Spain played with little imagination or variance IMO.

Spain were the favourites in every game they played, and yet in the knock-out stages they stuck to one gameplan and it was just about good enough.

I wouldn't hate them if they'd filled me with any sort of joy! Only VERY rarely could one say 'too good' to oneself, mostly when countenancing their admittedly hugely impressive defensive organisation.

Oracle Crackers (Tom D.), Monday, 12 July 2010 14:27 (fifteen years ago)

max: The '08 team played significantly different in a defensive sense. Marchena was seen as a liability and so Senna was told to sit back at all times. But with Senna as an out-and-out anchor man, the likes of Silva and Iniesta were given free reign to push forward, leading Spain to have more men in and around the box, being faster on the counter attack and so on.

Senna is now 33 or 34 and only playing a bit part role for a stagnant Villareal team and Pique has made Spain have a much stronger back four, so Del Bosque was able to be frivolous and play three similar midfielders, all as registas. This midfield three of Alonso, Xavi and Busquets meant that Spain controlled the ball, and who controls the ball controls the game but only having 11 players and 3 of them in or around the centre circle meant they had sufficient width and not enough players trying to get into attacking positions in front of these three to make attacking moves. Their passing imo became self indulgent because of this and less chances could be created, obviously leading to less goals being scored.

World Cup Final, 2010, some thoughts:

I was really happy that this didn't go to penalties, something I started dreading from about twenty minutes in. That said, I held hope the entire game that one side or the other might score.

I really hate it when a ref tried to impose hismelf so much on a game and so early. Webb not only made the game too much about him as opposed to the players, he made the game more tentative and duller. It was a good game, imo, but it might have been a little brighter had he not been such a card wielding nanny.

would netherlands winning have added to the narrative? the narrive of you can win tournaments through shitty deflections and offside goals and bad tackles and arjen robben?

Like max i thought i well enjoyed watching the possession game Spain were playing, the way players moved around to make themselves available and the quickness of mind and feet and the skill of just moving the ball around so quickly and controlling them (i thought it was impressive with netherlands pressing hard esp during the first half and the spanish players never looked hurried or panicked - put the england team in there they would have hoofed the ball out to touch after the second pass) perhaps it's just that that's the way I play pro-evo too.

Thought germany actually played a similar game and perhaps even better or maybe they were against more naive/inept defenders more of the time.

max, Spain are blessed with many great, great footballing talents, and it seemed to me that they were coasting a bit, rather than making the most of their resources - teams I like the most are teams that innovate depending on who is available and what is within the grasp of the team to achieve

Spain were very hard to beat, and they were solid all the way up the pitch, so they deserved to win.

max: they are an outstanding team, there is no doubt. man for man only the brazilians come close. but the tactics were indulgent and overly cautious, esp considering how many goals Barca scored the past two seasons.

And they do it all with such haughty, we-are-above-all-this, self-important grandeur.

Forgot you were talking abt Spanish players and thought you were talking abt English people complaining about 'PK'/'flop'/'soccer'/ya-KOO-bu or YAKKA-boo or whatever the wrong way to say it is/defenseman vs. defender/goalie. I think since USA outclassed every other English-speaking country in the world this year at the world cup MAYBE IT'S TIME TO HUSH UP AND LET EM TALK LIKE THEY WANNA TALK. but what do i know my english-speaking country is ranked 63 by FIFA and one of our commentators is Jason De Vos (wtf) and my local team is called THE IMPACT and everyone thinks they know shit about the game because the cup is on TV and they get hockey and how different are they really etc.

I thought Kaka was fine myself, a mix of uninspiring and very, very good - which is better than anyone else of his stature managed outside the finalists and probably Messi. Player who most lived up to the hype (and then some): Forlan

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Monday, 12 July 2010 18:07 (fifteen years ago)

Things I have liked about the 2010 Football World Cup in South Africa include...

Tshabalala's goal in the opening game, and the enormous wave of elation it caused.

Gerrard's goal against the USA, and the enormous, though very brief, wave of elation it caused.

Tomas Mueller, who passed and moved and passed and moved and passed and moved and was, for me, player of the tournament - 5 goals and 3 assists, and he's only got about 7 caps. Extraordinary. He's 10 years young than me.

Germany in general; fast, attacking, simple, but brilliant and technically outstanding. Given the ages of the team I can see them being a massive force in 2, 4, and 6 years time.

Spain; awesome quote from a Spanish journalist yesterday before the final on FiveLive - "3 years ago we decided to keep the ball, and we haven't given it back yet". I love the way they play, but I would, I love Barcelona, and it's basically Barcelona minus Messi. If they had a dribbled, and another finisher, they'd be amazing. Like, all-time amazing. As it is, i think they're close. Had Torres and Fabregas been fit and playing, they'd have scored the goals that people are whinging about missing. Every team they played went out to die defending. That said, I found the Germany game fascinating tactically, and last night was... dramatic, to say the least. The yelp of relief and joy from me, my wife, and my brother in law when Iniesta scored was wonderful. Not to be too romantic about it, but the way the Dutch went out that final made it seem like Spain had to win, that the narrative had to be one of good overcoming evil, crass and exaggerated as that seems.

As a rule I love Holland's approach to football, I've had serious obsessions with Ajax and the national team of the 70s in the same way as I have the Hungary team of the 50s. But last night they were horrible, and the frustrating thing is that they probably could have won with the players available had they just been more positive. Lose Van Bommel for Van Der Vaart, attack attack attack, and they'd have petrified teams. As usual, though, they choked, and this time that manifested itself in thuggery. Yes, there's a place for commitment and blood & thunder. No, there's no place for trying to kick Alonso's heart out through his spine, or for the kind of perpetual nasty cynicism that Van Bommel spent the last 2 games in particular meting out.

Players I have loved...

Ramos, member of Reef he may resemble, was thrilling in attack and committed in defence, especially aerially. He probably had more shots than most attacking midfielders.

Piqué, who reminds me of Hierro, but with a beard, which makes him better. Cultured, great passing range, capable of waltzing forward past people. He will be so awesome in 5 years.

Forlan, bastard lovechild of Tony from Holyoaks and Saly Gunnel he may be.

Asamoah Gyan, who looks tailor-made for the English top flight (sadly, as i have mojor problems with our league).

Arne Friedrich, oldest squad member, most defensive on paper, but still charged forward at every given opportunity like Paul fucking Warhurst in 1992.

Luis Fabiano, such balance, such a shot.

Other stuff...

That Italian goal, the chip into the top corner, the only graceful thing they did in the whole tournament.

Biggest disappointment was Argentina. Had they only had Cambiasso and Samuel to add organisation, to give Messi a oroper platform to attack from. I so wanted him to do well. I hope they come to Brazil in 4 years with mire structure and win it, with Messi eclipsing Maradona.

lol France, who seemed 10 years ago to have profited from an awesome, deliberate scheme that ran over a decade and was designed to win them the World Cup and did (much the same as Spain now), and what have they become. Arrogant, unfocused, squabbling babies. Likewise Italy, whose league ruled the world for so long, and now has collapsed and taken the house of cards that is the national team with it.

England, double lol. It's all been said.

Brazil I found frustrating; such negativity until they scored the first, and then they would turn it on in flashes. Had they turned it on from the start all the way through, really had at teams, they could have obliterated anyone. I was pleased to see them lose to Holland at the time, but after that final i now regret that result.

Re- Nick's summary:

Nice!

Is Muller going to go upfront w/ Kroos in behind? Or Kroos for Podolski and lol Gomez at CF? They are gonna miss the shit out of Klose in the near future. I guess they could give Kiebling (or however its spelt) a chance? I really want to see them continue turning into teh blitzkreg team for the next decade.

Barca without Messi is like usain bolt without his left foot.

fuque santa cruz (a hoy hoy), Monday, 12 July 2010 19:29 (fifteen years ago)

Everyone's short of strikers though - off the top of my head, I don't think there was a decent striker outside the last four, Brazil or Argentina. Strikerless formations look like the immediate future until a new Ronaldo or whoever emerges and shakes it all up again - or maybe the old Ronaldo, who knows, he could even have been at this world cup if he'd taken better care of himself.

Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Mañana? (Noodle Vague), Monday, 12 July 2010 19:39 (fifteen years ago)

I see Mueller as being like Gullit; he can play upfront entirely capably, but I think he'd offer more to any team with a bit of freedom behind a striker, where he'd cover more ground, make more passes, etc. Who that striker should be post-Klose, I don't know. But I'm pretty sure Germany will find one.

Captain Ostensible (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 12 July 2010 19:39 (fifteen years ago)

I meant decent at the tournament xp. I know Rooney's good, but that's no use at if he doesn't turn up when it counts. Same goes for plenty others. I was expecting big things from Drogba, but he at least is blameless.

homie of mine nails the final imo:

I thought it was a good game, as finals go. I dunno, I watch MLS so I'm probably way too used to watching two teams play non-flowing, low-scoring, physical at least somewhat dirty soccer with the only goal coming from an obvious defensive error more than skill and watching players miss wide open shots.

the uganda bombing is appalling, so sorry for gbx & anyone else w/ connections there.

very pleased with spain's victory, cuz it matters to them and they consistently looked like the champions all the other teams treated them as. they are a memorable team, very decent guys, w/ much more hair and better looks than the dutch & their midfield is all-time great. I don't think they ever really hit top form attacking though, slightly cautious passing w/ alonso&busquets most of the time, but enjoyed it when sergio ramos made it his personal quest to improve the situation like a surf-maicon (matt dc otm). they had weird defensive errors, the fernandes pinball goal being the nadir, and casillas had to put in some p good shifts.

holland gave a pretty good final, occasionally looking very sharp breaking or closing up fantastically on spain, better than germany imo, but still woeful fluffing from robben who could have become a legend w/ a slightly better performance, sneijder making bad decisions & van persie mediocre again. Spain's opponents spent most of their efforts dealing with the match spain were giving them, but most of spain's changes in shape were aggressive. they impose themselves on every game in a way that you can only do if yr positioning and passing is as consistent & agile as xavi's &c. is. not a tactical option for a side unless you have mutant barca dna.

greatest what-if of tournament wld be the brazil-spain final that was just one felipe melo meltdown away. but I'm glad I didn't have to see brazil win that & spain's possession inspired confidence meant they were much less meltdown prone anyway, a rare trait amongst great on-paper teams in 2010. all top four teams were pretty great, also loved ghana's insanely composed passing the ball no matter the threat, craig marduk rampaging out from brazil's defense & bellowing, france imploding, quagliarella's goal, forlan's face, lucio&drogba tussling, portugal drubbing n korea, joachim low, 'flops'&'plays', incredible scorn of lee dixon&the sun&c. talking about england, enyeama ruining messi's world cup & seedorf&desailly generally.

when suarez gets emotional he looks like michael mcintyre.

The word "flops" just sounds like erectile dysfunction. That and it doesn't describe the action - a player dives or falls, he doesn't to swing loosely; bounce; flap: His long hair flops in his eyes when he runs.

fuque santa cruz (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 07:45 (fifteen years ago)

well it is incredibly close to erectile dysfunction, isn't it. you're poised, erect, on form, and a phantom suddenly causes you to collapse like a marionette, all force and tension replaced with slack

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 07:51 (fifteen years ago)

No, 'flops' is excellent - it covers the middle ground between being tripped (a foul, involuntary) and diving (cheating, deliberate). It's also kind of embarrassing and unmanly, like the conduct itself. It's dreadful that the sport has got itself into a position where you need to flop to get what you deserve - I'd like the advantage rule revisited to try and recover some dignity.

'Play' doesn't really work because it's not really a separate event, it's always open at one end or the other. Then again, we call it 'a move' without finding that strange, so it's probably just cos it sounds American.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 07:58 (fifteen years ago)

I associate 'play' with pre-arranged american football moves with huddles and whatnot. Unless its an inventive set piece, I don't see the parralel.

Yeah I get that flop most probably is a good word to describe it, I just don't like the word.

fuque santa cruz (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 08:00 (fifteen years ago)

you call things in football a "move". "play" is an exact translation into us english. languages be different.

caek, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 08:02 (fifteen years ago)

Diving is bad - easily solved too, imo - but it doesn't worry me unduly. Football is a high speed game where cheats have developed exciting high speed ways of cheating, boo hoo. The "unmanly" aspect of it is exactly why the word "flop" rankles (just a touch) I think - fuck a Manly, football's charm is in part based on a grace and elegance that runs contra to the macho school of Big Guys Knocking the Crap Out of Each Other that sometimes passes for sport in some people's heads.

Yeah Van Persie and Robben really dislike each other from what I can see - I remember in 2006 when VP scored and Robben went to celebrate and Van Persie was all "no, I don't want love from you".

Not passing to other attacking players has been a real problem with both teams. Spain could have scored several more in both the final and the semi had their players stopped going for one-man heroics and passed to the other dude who was in loads of space.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 08:19 (fifteen years ago)

Football is a high speed game where cheats have developed exciting high speed ways of cheating

Yeah this. I feel like of all the team sports, football has a certain uniqueness - in the combination of the pace at which it's played and the amount of contact allowed by its laws - that has allowed diving to become a thing. I realise that doesn't make it any more palatable to part-time viewers necessarily but I do sometimes feel like people are using diving to insinuate that football is inherently more slack-moralled than comparable team sports and I don't think this is the case

Psychic... Octopus... Another Mertesac (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 08:23 (fifteen years ago)

flopping isn't cheating unless it's also diving though, it just makes you look like a dick and imo it'd be nice if the sport didn't more or less require you to look like a dick

my uncle has a "famous" story about playing (american) football in west texas - on one play he basically got driven into the ground by the opposition and it turned out later that he'd cracked a rib. his coach came across the field, stood over him, peered down and said "get up son, people are gonna think you're hurt."

the closest thing USA has to diving is basketball where "drawing a foul" is an accepted part of the game; coaches teach it at an early age. sometimes it doesn't work - the player flops to the floor, no whistle sounds, play on. but you never see a basketball player actually feigning pain, at least not that i can remember.

I feel like of all the team sports, football has a certain uniqueness - in the combination of the pace at which it's played and the amount of contact allowed by its laws - that has allowed diving to become a thing

It's more than that, GAA sports have a much higher level of physical contact before a foul is called, and the pace is equivalent with Gaelic football or probably a lot quicker for hurling. There's no diving.

It's what you do when you get beat

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 10:09 (fifteen years ago)

I think Webb probably went in to earlier with some of the cards - which he wasn't prepared to really follow up. Happens to a lot of refs who wave the yellow about a lot but then get very quiet when the fouling doesn't stop and they've nowhere else to go. He whistled and carded a lot but never really got on top of the game imo, and I do think that's a poor performance.

Holland's complaint mainly seems to be that he disrupted their game plan by not letting them kick the opposition to death in the first 15 mins, so fuck their whining.

Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Mañana? (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 10:18 (fifteen years ago)

"went in too early"

Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Mañana? (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 10:18 (fifteen years ago)

Pretty sure they could argue that a free kick should have been given when Robben was through on goal and Puyol attempted to pull him back, and that Puyol should have been booked and sent off - esp. as Heitinga got sent off for gently resting his hand on Iniesta's shoulder. Robben prob'ly confused Webb by not diving and writhing around on the ground, as you'd expect him (or anyone in the Spanish team) to usually do.

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 10:18 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah Puyol looked a sending off there - the second Robben was one on one with him I knew how it was gonna go down, but as you say he inexplicably failed to tumble over.

Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Mañana? (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 10:20 (fifteen years ago)

And they wonder why players dive?

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 10:20 (fifteen years ago)

the second Robben was one on one with him I knew how it was gonna go down,

You knew, I knew, the geezer standing next to me in the pub knew. But Howard Webb didn't.

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 10:22 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think there's much moral debate in the heads of players who dive - "the game unfairly protects dirty defending therefore I will dive to equalise the balance". I think some players are just inclined to cheat, or have been trained to do it from a young age.

Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Mañana? (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 10:23 (fifteen years ago)

Anyway, as I've said in the past, as far as the League's concerned on Monday mornings the disciplinary panel should go thru the match tapes for the weekend, and pick out the blatant, unarguable dives - don't worry about the iffy ones - and give each perp a three match ban. See how much diving happens next weekend, and so on.

Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Mañana? (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 10:25 (fifteen years ago)

Plus referees are more inclined to give fouls if you fling your arms in the air like you've been shot in the small of back by a Serbian sniper, let out a cry of anguish and form a Robbenball

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 10:27 (fifteen years ago)

They should go thru match tapes to see if the louder the yelp the more likely the yellow/red

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 10:28 (fifteen years ago)

missed the first twenty minutes, but this 'bringing out the yellow too early' doesn't wash with me tbh. yellow's a yellow. he brought out the red too late.

Everytime I hit 'submit post' the internet gets dumber (darraghmac), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 10:50 (fifteen years ago)

Yes, Puyol should have been sent off by then

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 10:52 (fifteen years ago)

xpost

I agree a yellow's a yellow, a red's a red etc but the referee has to use the cards to establish some kind of discipline on the game. You see refs who can do that with barely a card and refs who break 'em out when the foul calls for it but I don't think the cards on their own are what establishes the referees authority. If you don't get that authority established in the first 15 mins - however you do it - then the game's potentially screwed.

Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Mañana? (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 10:54 (fifteen years ago)

What Webb did was ensure that after virtually every foul he would be surrounded by players waving imaginary cards and baying for bookings

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 10:57 (fifteen years ago)

The main problem was Holland went into the game determined to kick everything Spanish, and I say that as someone that would have preferred the Dutch to win. I don't think the bookings affected the game in any way: that's exactly how they were going to play anyway.

I Ain't Committing Suicide For No Crab (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 11:24 (fifteen years ago)

He was trying to play the hardman but then flunked the really hard decisions, which is one of the worst things you can do as a ref, I think. Sending Heitinga off was totally feeble, esp. after what de Jong and Puyol had gotten away with. (xp)

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 11:28 (fifteen years ago)

btw, totally agree with NV about an FA 'diving commission' to review all the weekend's dives and hand out bans accordingly. I would add to that: when someone rolls around on the floor in supposed agony then springs up perfectly fine as soon as a)they realise they've got the free kick / b)they realise the ref has played on and the ball is now miles away, the opposing team should then be allowed to attack that player physically until he is suffering the level of pain he claimed to be feeling before.

I Ain't Committing Suicide For No Crab (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 11:28 (fifteen years ago)

Pretty sure they could argue that a free kick should have been given when Robben was through on goal and Puyol attempted to pull him back, and that Puyol should have been booked and sent off

couldn't happen to a nicer guy and everything, but that one decision justifies every dive he's ever taken. Hate what this is doing to the game.

I thought Webb was terrible for that, and for other basic decisions he got wrong, and he was too whistle-happy at times. The cards I am fine with, could've given a few fewer yellows and van Bommel a straight red, but I'll take what he did give.

Anyway, none of that caused Holland to lose. Except the Robben/Puyol one, which may well have done.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 11:37 (fifteen years ago)

As well to say that every time Puyol gets away with a last man foul it justifies all the reds/penalties he's ever gotten.

Everytime I hit 'submit post' the internet gets dumber (darraghmac), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 11:38 (fifteen years ago)

Not so. It's a player penalised for being honest where if he'd 'cheated' he'd've been rewarded.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 11:41 (fifteen years ago)

That's the situation. It doesn't justify any other instances of cheating, particularly when they're numerous and blatant.

I'm on the side of refs blowing for any significant contact, btw. Just saying that I disagree with the sentiment of diving being justified because a ref didn't see contact that one time.

Everytime I hit 'submit post' the internet gets dumber (darraghmac), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 11:50 (fifteen years ago)

I should've said 'flopping' not 'diving' - the new word's useful. It doesn't justify the ones that are actual cheating ('diving' on no contact), but it does justify always making the most of everything ('flopping' on minimal contact) - if the ref won't make these decisions, the player has little choice but to do it for him.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 12:11 (fifteen years ago)

I agree a yellow's a yellow, a red's a red etc but the referee has to use the cards to establish some kind of discipline on the game. You see refs who can do that with barely a card and refs who break 'em out when the foul calls for it but I don't think the cards on their own are what establishes the referees authority. If you don't get that authority established in the first 15 mins - however you do it - then the game's potentially screwed.

Agree with this, but it's very difficult to know if this is what went wrong in this particular game unless you were on the pitch and could hear what the players/the ref were saying.

To be honest, I think he did pretty well considering. I'd have sent about six off (although not de Jong; that was dangerous play (although I think a straight red for that would actually have changed the atmosphere on the pitch in a way that would have reduced the ultimate # of cards)).

German football was engulfed in controversy today over remarks by the agent of a top footballer, who allegedly referred to a "bunch of gays" in the national team.

Michael Becker, who has been the agent of German national football captain Michael Ballack for more than a decade, is reported to have made the comment in the latest edition of the news magazine Der Spiegel.

In an essay entitled New German Men, Aleksander Osang recounts an interview he had with Becker prior to the World Cup in which the agent allegedly told him which of the players in the team were gay. He later said that a former national player was ready to reveal the "bunch of gays" in the German team, according to Osang. Asked about the sexuality of one of the newer players, Becker, who is a lawyer by profession, referred to him as being "half gay".

Osang went on to say that Becker put the new adroit, lighter and elegant style of play that has become a trademark of trainer Joachim Löw's players down to their homosexuality, in contrast to the typically more aggressive and offensive German style of past years, but suggested they played too delicately to assure themselves a place in the final.

...

Becker has neither denied nor confirmed that he made the comments, but has since said he was "misunderstood" and that the interview was not "authorised", a common journalistic practice in Germany whereby the interviewee has the right to change his remarks after the interview.

Osang said he stood by his article, saying that Becker had told him "unbelievable stories that I took down in my notebook and Becker didn't seem to have anything against me doing so".

Book review:
Why England Lose
or Soccernomics (title seems to differ by country)
Simon Kuper & Stefan Szymanski

This was mentioned a few weeks back, so I checked it out. It's a kind of pop-economics approach to football, covering four broad areas:
- a micro view of clubs as a business
- an analysis of how certain competitions have developed and why
- how supporters behave
- the international game

They use some statistics in support of their arguments, but mostly the approach is theory with anecdotes. The problem is that it hasn't been done very rigorously. International performance is assessed using win percentage, for example, so Spain are shown massively improving in the last two decades - but there's no mention in this context of politics having dumped a dozen or more weak teams into UEFA since 1990, when it seems obvious that anyone decent should now be guaranteed winning a quarter of their games, which wasn't the case before. Some stats are obviously just made up, like the proof as to which is the sportiest nation on earth.

That said, some uses of statistics struck me as really clever, like using wage bills to identify racism in the English game (if black players are discriminated against, they will get paid less - hence look at pairs of clubs with similar wage bills - if the one with more black players achieves higher, that's proof of racism - shows it was prevalent up until about 1990, before fading out). And the anecdotal stuff can be really good, like the chapter on penalty technique and game theory. Ultimately, though, there simply aren't enough of either - you never find out which clubs were the racist ones or equality pioneers, you don't know how selective the stats were, and the anecdotes seem thin because you can always think of a counter-example.

Stylistically as well, it's a bit of a mess. When the point is to overturn received wisdom, it's really annoying to find exactly that in non-football areas. Every mention of Iceland is immediately followed by reference to a collapsed economy (wealth strongly correlating with performance) - maybe they are starving in Reykjavik now, though I doubt it. That gag is even made twice in one paragraph, infuriatingly.

In summary, it's interesting enough, but not really very good. It's a shame, because I think that the idea is terrific - football is such a huge and colourful subject that there must be a test for every variable and an interesting anecdote to match, so you could write something that is entertaining while also going pretty deep. But this isn't it.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 16 July 2010 20:45 (fifteen years ago)

I've been reading that, too. Don't understand the logic behind counting a draw as 'half a win', though, in some of the stats at the beginning of the book. Am I being thick?

The referee was perfect (Chris), Friday, 16 July 2010 21:29 (fifteen years ago)

I suppose it makes as much sense as anything (draw as one-third of a win might've made equal sense) - it's just another thing that's never explained. For a book which is trying to debunk myths through numbers, using such loose starting-points makes it all seem rather slack.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 16 July 2010 21:41 (fifteen years ago)

That said, I really liked a lot of the conclusions, they mostly make intuitive sense. It just feels like you have to take them on faith more than you should - not a problem for me as I think about the game a lot myself anyway, but seems less ideal for those with a casual interest, which is who the book is presumably aimed at.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 16 July 2010 21:50 (fifteen years ago)

I watched the Man Utd-Chelsea shootout on Youtube after reading that chapter on penalties/game theory. Fascinating stuff.

Any other good football books? I read Inverting The Pyramid but must admit, as interesting as it was, I kind of wanted to just read about the tactics and not about some dude who invented them.

The referee was perfect (Chris), Saturday, 17 July 2010 14:14 (fifteen years ago)

I'm trying to get onto a bit of a roll at the moment - started Jonathan Wilson's new book, The Anatomy of England, last night after I finished that one. I didn't get very far - I was knackered and really had to go to sleep - but it had me gripped immediately. He just writes so much better. I only read the prologue and a bit of the first chapter but it's of a totally different order in quality. The way he mixes personal experiences (his own and others') with tightly-edited facts from lots of different sources make it so much more entertaining and easier to read than Why England Lose, even though it's much denser and probably more difficult.

It's almost totally historical though - the idea being that ten famous international games from 1929 to 2007 each reveal lessons about the English game - so might not be what you're after.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 17 July 2010 14:27 (fifteen years ago)

I'll give that a go, thanks. Futebol: The Brazilian Way Of Life by Alex Bellos is supposed to be really good. I've had it on my shelf for ages but still haven't got round to reading it.

The referee was perfect (Chris), Saturday, 17 July 2010 14:52 (fifteen years ago)

I've never really been able to get into books on foreign football cultures for some reason, at least not since I was little and read things about the really big stars. I have ones on German footy and this encyclopaedic thing on the global game, but never tempted to open them. I just ordered one on the development of soccer in the US, hopefully with loads of stuff on the early days when it was a big sport - with any luck that'll break the jam.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 17 July 2010 15:15 (fifteen years ago)

"Just bringing boys and girls together, organising schooling and health education, providing the tools to fight poverty and disease – that is the legacy we want to leave," said Sepp Blatter at the start of the World Cup. But one week after it finished, legacy-seeking press focus has stayed on Fifa's other big win: its estimated £2bn tax-free profit.

The latest stories around the ethical set-up of the tournament concern the already controversial Jabulani ball. It was written off as "inadequate" by Gianluigi Buffon, and Robinho said: "The guy that designed it never played football." But the aerodynamics probably weren't top priority for Pakistani workers stitching for Adidas, being paid less than £1.85 a day, say the International Labour Rights Forum. That's less than £50 a month.

Reports about the ball follow similar stories surrounding official replicas of the World Cup mascot, Zakumi, produced in China with factory workers earning £1.90 a day, while Nike had its World Cup replica kits made by workers in Jakarta, paid £3 a day.

"'The World Cup succeeded in highlighting many of the positive aspects of the African continent," says Will Prochaska, director of Alive & Kicking, a charity making balls in Africa in Fairtrade conditions. "But if Fifa had decided to run the tournament ethically instead, by supplying balls and merchandise from African businesses and social enterprises, then it could have saved itself the hassle of its legacy programme because the tournament would have helped generate a considerable socioeconomic boost to the region by itself."

Media focus remains, too, on the fallout from stringent laws Fifa required South Africa to pass preventing locals from producing products related to the tournament. Fifa lawyers warned: "Those attempting to benefit from the publicity surrounding the 2010 Fifa World Cup without paying sponsorship fees could land themselves in very hot water" – and were true to their word.

One "ambush marketing" case involved a lollipop maker being dragged through the courts for calling a sweet "The 2010 Pop", while, as reported last week, a Port Elizabeth bar owner was threatened with a £4,500 fine for putting up posters reading "The Phoenix Hotel and Stage Door pub welcomes the world to the World Cup". A restaurant owner, meanwhile, was threatened with jail for writing "2010" on a football and putting it in his window. "They tried to take advantage," Fifa said.
