i find music confusing and annoying (Ned Trifle II), Monday, 12 July 2010 19:49 (fifteen years ago)

That's one wide street. It's not Dublin, is it?

Ismael Klata, Monday, 12 July 2010 20:00 (fifteen years ago)

Prague is my guess.

Aimless, Monday, 12 July 2010 20:01 (fifteen years ago)

Nah, gotta be anglophone - 'pianoforte warehouse', '_(o?)ttons coals'

tetrahedron of space (woof), Monday, 12 July 2010 20:03 (fifteen years ago)

Dublin seems like a good guess. Definitely something UK connected with the Sutton's Coals, I think.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Monday, 12 July 2010 20:03 (fifteen years ago)

Coal adverts on trams = North of England, maybe. Leeds?

ailsa, Monday, 12 July 2010 20:04 (fifteen years ago)

Limerick?

tetrahedron of space (woof), Monday, 12 July 2010 20:06 (fifteen years ago)

I'm thinking it could be O'Connell Street looking north, though the hills at the back seem a bit high

Ismael Klata, Monday, 12 July 2010 20:10 (fifteen years ago)

Nah, n/m don't think Limerick had trams. Prob not Dublin - what's that hill? + I bet you'd see Nelson's Column in a view of O'Connell St. Liking Ireland tho - Cork?

tetrahedron of space (woof), Monday, 12 July 2010 20:14 (fifteen years ago)

yep ( big ass version with street name: http://www.histografica.com/pictures/original/o_b9trwvtk.jpg )

StanM, Monday, 12 July 2010 20:17 (fifteen years ago)

Cooool. I'll be a few minutes to find another one.

Wow, well done - I've spent the last few mins trying to decide if this view of Dublin taken from Nelson's Pillar matched up!

Ismael Klata, Monday, 12 July 2010 20:23 (fifteen years ago)

ty - the 'sutton's coal' pointed to Ireland, & once Dublin's out there aren't too many candidates for 'large street' tbh. Or 'city'

tetrahedron of space (woof), Monday, 12 July 2010 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

Ah, I had read it as "Cotton's Coal" and google wasn't helping based on that.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Monday, 12 July 2010 20:39 (fifteen years ago)

Warsaw

Ismael Klata, Monday, 12 July 2010 20:39 (fifteen years ago)

(sry, bit grimmer this one. Prob should have gone for Swansea)

xp

Instant answer, yes to Ismael

tetrahedron of space (woof), Monday, 12 July 2010 20:39 (fifteen years ago)

Woo! I thought it must be Dresden or Berlin, but iirc the centre of Dresden's right on the river and it looked too intimate to be Berlin. I know Warsaw's supposed to have a gorgeous old square, so guessed that might be it.

Will post one in a moment...

i find music confusing and annoying (Ned Trifle II), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 08:40 (fifteen years ago)

My first thought was Paris, but Buenos Aires is a great guess and it could easily be there

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 08:40 (fifteen years ago)

F' me! Is it seriously Buenos Aires? (Spelling, Gamaliel!) Seriously this is a punching the air in the office moment. I've never even been there, it was the statue (thinx - tin pot dictator statue, and pre-war, planned streets/modern architecture and somehow the lay-out of the park/gardens).

GamalielRatsey, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 08:48 (fifteen years ago)

No idea, but seeing as I'm on a roll, Antwerp.

GamalielRatsey, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 11:49 (fifteen years ago)

This is a great thread idea but I have no idea about any of them.

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 12:00 (fifteen years ago)

Ned Trifle (Notinmyname), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 12:06 (fifteen years ago)

Not Trieste neither.

Ned Trifle (Notinmyname), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 12:20 (fifteen years ago)

They just didn't look English, but it was more the potteries stuff (and the chimneys in the background maybe). I was going to say Delft, but it looks like a port.

GamalielRatsey, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 12:21 (fifteen years ago)

Calais?

decided an hour ago to solve this. i now know about the difference between porkpie and boater hats, some of the regional variances in turn of the century european porcelain, english sugar refineries and the Molasses Act of 1733, and where to buy old fashioned ladies clothes and xpost there's the answer, super.

Jarlrmai, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 12:33 (fifteen years ago)

Well done Woof. Yes, this is a view of the old Islington Market, and you can see the Metropolitan cattle market behind it, with the bottom of the clock tower in the distance. Another view of the cattle market - here. And what the tower looks like to-day - here.

http://a.imageshack.us/img706/2913/victoriasq.jpg

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 10:03 (fifteen years ago)

Yes, it's Brum. I don't think it's changed that much really, the space is still easily recognisable. The Council House is still there, as is Queen Victoria (although she's now bronze rather than marble). Obviously the right hand side is different. In fact what was there before these buildings was even more impressive - a church which only lasted 90 years - http://www.francisfrith.com/birmingham/photos/christ-church-1896_37276/. Quite a bit of Colmore Row (the road leading away from the Council House) remains intact.

i find music confusing and annoying (Ned Trifle II), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 10:09 (fifteen years ago)

xp The slope was always there (see photo of church linked above) but was less pronounced when they built the Christchurch Buildings (as seen in the postcard). When they went the slope was re-instated.

60: I'm confused. Through GISing some combination of fachwerk / half-timber / palace / schloss / mock-Tudor / German (I forget which) the building seems to be the Schloss Cecilienhof in Potsdam. But I can't confirm that with a picture of a baroque interior matching the one above (there seem to be similar interiors in another - older - palace in Potsdam but nothing I have seen matches exactly). This makes me think I've just found a similar half-timbered building and jumped to conclusions.

A tentative Potsdam?
