Not that Julia's impressing with her anti-refugee crap, but I hope she wins because that will, presumably, be the end of Tony Abbott as a politician, and that can't come soon enough.

KNOW YOUR CANDIDATES

Austen Tayshus (former #1 chart topper!), Australian Sex Party for Warringah

When asked how he would be campaigning he said, “In Speedos. And unlike Marathon Man (Tony Abbott), I’ve got a Cockatoo to put in them”. He said he would make an excellent representative for the people of Sydney’s northern beaches and would not run away from anything. “I’ll even doorknock Sydney’s northern beaches in a mankini, if the Mad Monk will wear his Speedos”, he said.

“If people want to hear that “he’s packed Bill-a-bong”, or that Anna has ‘plat-her-puss’ then as adults, they have a right to hear it. If adults want to be able to buy and sell R rated computer games and X rated DVDs, they should have the right. They do in New Zealand, Europe, the USA and other countries that have real separation of church and state."

You can call Austen Tayshus on 0413 120 430.

"The Dad" from Gay Dad (King Boy Pato), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 10:42 (fifteen years ago)

Report:

- People Skills made a joke, nobody laughed
- contestant 2 was an old bloke who did a really bad comedy routine
- the gay Asian bloke out of Entourage gave him a high score for being 'funnier than Tony Abbott'

Now they've got circus dogs on.

lol br0's gf is quoted in dis article

wilter, Friday, 13 August 2010 00:23 (fifteen years ago)

Previously used, now applied to a certain former ALP leader and Prime Ministereial aspirant:

"Somewhere in New York City, right now, as we speak, a guy is sitting at a bar, nursing a Budweiser, watching the Giants on the television and he is trying to decide what sort of potato chips to buy with his next beer. It's a vital decision, because he prefers steak and onion but he fancies his chances of getting laid later on in the night and he doesn't want his breath to stink because that might adversely affect his chances. So to play safe he thinks he might buy plain instead.

'Now this guy is unique. He doesn't realise it, in fact he doesn't realise much if the truth be known, he's not the sharpest tool in the shed and he'd be no sure thing to realise if his arse was on fire. But he actually is unique, literally, in a club with one member, right now while he's sitting at that bar contemplating his chances of scoring tonight.

'And can you even guess what makes him unique? It's because WHETHER THIS BASTARD ACTUALLY GETS TO BONK SOMEBODY/SOMETHING TONIGHT IS THE ONLY ISSUE ON THE FACE OF GOD'S GREEN EARTH RIGHT NOW THAT I GIVE LESS OF A FLYING RATS TOENAIL ABOUT THAN ANYTHING MARK LATHAM MAY OR MAY NOT DO OR SAY AT ANY TIME BETWEEN NOW AND THE END OF HIS LIFE.

In theory this is correct, but in practice the Brian Harradines and Stephen Fieldings of this world do more damage than the Greens (say) can do good, not merely because they're crazy, but also because they preference their own peccadiloes and (though this isn't shocking) local issues over and above actually holding the Govt to account.

I think probably the worst part of this outcome is its legacy: the official version of history is almost guaranteed to reflect the Libs party line, namely that only the Libs can be trusted with the economy. Never mind the fact that Australia's economy weathered the GFC better than any other developed country.

The biggest mistake of the Labor campaign was not to talk about this more. And this is not even a hindsight thing. EVERY journalist and commentator was saying this for the past 3 weeks or so.

This.

That party has myriad problems but the biggest of them all is its fear to blow its own trumpet. Enough economists have praised Labor's response to the GFC that it should have been a central boast in the campaign. Instead the party sat on it, too scared to cultivate hubris, and fell apart.

Can someone summarize or give a link about the major issues and stances of the major parties? Are the Liberals something like the UK Conservatives and Labor something like New Labour?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 22 August 2010 02:30 (fifteen years ago)

Can someone summarize or give a link about the major issues and stances of the major parties?

Not really. Nobody can. Apart from pandering to racists, the only real point of difference between them was broadband infrastructure. The ALP (left, incumbent) has a $43b plan to build a fibre network; the LNP (right) wanted to spend about $6b on tin cans and string.

As far as issues go, the only real non-policy issue was the ongoing instability of the ALP, with a hostile leadership change and such.

Doug Antony Green (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 22 August 2010 02:42 (fifteen years ago)

Oh and the LNP promised greater funding for mental health but that was drowned out in the most unimportant and inane bullshit I have ever seen in an election campaign.

Doug Antony Green (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 22 August 2010 02:43 (fifteen years ago)

Oh and to answer your other question (sorry, v tired today): Yep, the Liberals are like the Conservatives (despite the name) and Labor was once like Labour but did sort of go a bit New Labour in 2007, i.e. shifting to the right.

Doug Antony Green (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 22 August 2010 02:45 (fifteen years ago)

Generally speaking the Libs are more influenced by/skewed t'wards the religious right than Labor, but yeah both sides have ignored some things of fundamental importance in recent years that is really annoying me.

- trade schools/appenticeships/building skills for kids
- support for tech and R&D in this country is a joke, and we're going to be pwned by China and India in short order if someone doesnt do something
- mental health, shit, health in general is on a backward slide
- i'd like to say public transport but thats a state thing i guess
- our foreign policy? Hello? Do we even have one!?

Fuck, just spent a thousand bucks on cameras.

http://bigpondnews.com/articles/TopStories/2010/08/22/Independents_seem_to_favour_NBN_503073.html

Mr Katter, who was returned in the north Queensland seat of Kennedy, has nominated broadband as high on his list of priorities, and is completely against it being privately run.

Mr Windsor, from New England, in northern NSW, is of like mind.

He came out swinging against the coalition's 'retrograde' plan, saying it would be a disaster to leave it to competition to deliver broadband to country Australia.

Mr Windsor said it was time to get on with the National Broadband Network - 'the railway of the 21st century'.

Meanwhile, Mr Oakeshott's passion for broadband can be traced back to his maiden speech.

In it, he reflected on students and business in his NSW mid-north coast seat battling with dial-up connections.

He has welcomed Labor's network and plans for government to be its majority owner.

Arch Bevis & Butthead (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 22 August 2010 07:51 (fifteen years ago)

xxp depends on who can suck the most independent arse but yeah, scrape, and I'm pretty damned pleased that nobody won too because it'll give both sides the shock they need to bloody well stand for something.

I don't think this is right. I mean, it'd be great if it was, but what is clear about Labour and Liberal both is that "pandering to the idiot middle" is such an article of faith to them that it becomes the answer to everything (in the same way that "deregulation and the free market" is the answer to everything for neoliberals).

More likely, people on both sides of politics will think "well clearly we didn't do enough to stake out the rooty hill middle ground, next time we won't make that mistake." Working with a host of crossbenchers in both house of parliament likewise ought to stimulate proper policy discussion but is more likely to result in both parties rushing to spend the next three years proclaiming themselves better placed to please everybody by standing for nothing.

Only super strong majorities (preferably in both houses) encourage the big parties to actually re-open their policy scrapbook and try to work out what they really care about - hence Howard spruiking Workchoices in 2005-2006.

Whether he lets the mask slip a bit now, Abbott won't actually revert to being a (psycho) "conviction politician" unless and until he feels confident that he's got public confidence to burn. Of course the sad part about the Labour party, which has totally internalised the story that the Howard govt told about it, is that it's totally developed this nervous marsupial fear that the slightest shift in political sentiment will result in a collapse in public support, so it becomes terrified of proudly selling itself even when it's got something to sell - which itself then becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Tim F, Sunday, 22 August 2010 07:57 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry for cynical here, but I grew up in the bush/regional towns and I'm afraid that 80% of people dont apply a modicum of thought whatsoever to voting. So much of this doesnt matter.

"Gillard is a lady, I'll vote for her"
"Gillard is a ranga, fuck it I'll vote liberal"
"I WANT GIGABIGABIT INTERWEBS I'll vote whoever's gonna do that"
"Bargle internet filter I want my porn NO LABOR"
"Abbot is a fine upstanding christian man who opposes gays and abortion so voting for him"

... etc etc

(x-post) Yeah for sure, but I think that may be Tim's point too. Both sides are pandering to the swinging voters, and it just looks as though they don't vote according to policies, but for trivial reasons such as those you've mentioned. A good argument against compulsory voting, maybe? Because many swinging voters wouldn't vote at all if they didn't have to? I might be wrong about that, I don't know.

I'm not sure which is better/worse...

At least with compulsory voting we know no one's stacking shit with forced vote pushes which I guess is the idea.

Tim F & Trayce: I do see your relative points, but I still think capturing imaginations would have made a difference. I think Rudd got in because (a) Howard was by then quite revolting and (b) the whole Kevin 07 thing looked attractive and prime ministerial. That majority batch of dumb turds and dumb turds in western Sydney were zombie-swayed by that just as this year they were zombie-swayed by nothing at all. The 'stop the boats' mantra cut through to Abbott's support base (which would have voted for him anyway) but I think most other people were just pinning the tail on the donkey. The huge number of informal votes adds weight to that theory.

Arch Bevis & Butthead (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 22 August 2010 21:03 (fifteen years ago)

I have to admit that watching the 3 rural indies on 7:30 Report last night actually gave me quite a bit of hope. Didn't sound as though any of them were keen to line up with Abbott & co. And they were articulate and smart and positive. Although not sure what Bob Katter was on about when he was talking about "giant flying foxes" killing people more than taipans do.

it's so hard to imagine ex-national mp's lining up with labor but since it's so much worse imagining abbott as pm i'm giving it my best shot.

the entire gold coast is now lnp, which is not really surprising given what people here are like but it's still :(
i do think it is partly bligh's fault though, her government is awful.

Yep. If his figures were in order he'd have submitted them by week three of the campaign; he wouldn't have kept them secret until six hours before the political advertising window closed, and he certainly wouldn't be holding back now.

Abbott's false façade was remarkable during the campaign, but obviously he can't keep it up, and now he's not even trying. It really is as though he's decided (a) he doesn't have to pretend to be nice anymore because everyone's voted and (b) he thinks he won the election by rights. The latter is hardly an excuse given that the ALP was so crap that I could have defeated them by scratching my arse and blinkingfor five weeks.

The United Nations' anti-racism panel says there is "embedded" discrimination in Australia.

The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) says ongoing prejudice against Aboriginals exists despite political pledges.

It criticises what it calls the "unacceptably high level of disadvantage and social dislocation" for Indigenous people in the Northern Territory.

The committee also raised concerns about the handling of refugees and asylum seekers, as well as anti-terrorism measures; discrimination against newer, mainly Muslim, ethnic communities; and assaults on foreign students.

CERD also voiced concerns that the policy of processing refugees outside Australia meant that people seeking shelter in Australia were not being treated properly.

The committee's recommendations were issued in a report following a regular review of Australia's compliance with an international treaty of 1969 prohibiting racism.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/08/29/2996351.htm

Australia 'pretending racism isn't there'

The Race Discrimination Commissioner says the next federal government must amend the constitution to make it impossible to suspend the Racial Discrimination Act.

The act was suspended in 2007 to roll out the Northern Territory intervention in Aboriginal communities and has yet to be fully reinstated.

A United Nations report has condemned the intervention saying it shows discrimination is structurally embedded in Australia.

Commissioner Graeme Innes says the UN committee was shocked at the Federal Government's policy in the Northern Territory.

"The actions that needed to be taken in the Northern Territory could have been done on a non-discriminatory basis," he said.

"So what the committee is recommending to Australia is not only we completely remove the suspension - which we haven't yet done - but we entrench in the constitution a provision so that never again can race discrimination law be suspended in Australia."

Mr Innes says Australia is in denial about being a racist country.

"We need to do much better in terms of having a national multicultural policy, which we haven't had for almost 15 years, which includes an anti-racism strategy," he said.

"I think the problem for Australia is that we try to pretend that racism isn't there. What we need to do is face the facts that there are elements of racism in this country and take some positive action to address it."

Spot on.

Grattan:

The idea that so much money could be tossed out to buy the vote of one independent is offensive. Why should the people of Hobart be so potentially advantaged, while those in Wagga Wagga, for example, where the hospital is a disgrace, do not get such priority and largesse? [...] The Treasury costings have struck at his economic credibility argument. The $1 billion offer makes him look like a spendthrift.

Dumbarse Tony had people fooled on his economic responsibility claims until this week. He didn't expect all this to be thrust into the public sphere in the situation we're in now. Delicious.

Q: What's independent and craps under a tree? A: Rob Oakeshitt (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 01:05 (fifteen years ago)

I'm mildly relaxed about this because eww Abbott, but I fully expect Gillard to be one of the least distinguished PMs we have. And if they knife her and put in Shorten, then call me a Liberal.

Even t'Age sez "LABOR TIGHTROPE" I think.

This is the shittiest election ever, what a joke.

queen of the toilets, which is in some ways the worst branch of royalty (Trayce), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 01:16 (fifteen years ago)

Very representative, though. Every two-party result indicates precisely the ennui felt by the whole country this time round.

Q: What's independent and craps under a tree? A: Rob Oakeshitt (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 01:53 (fifteen years ago)

I dunno. I still think there were the usual rabid 35-40% who will always vote for the ALP, ditto the 35-40% who will always vote for the coalition. The ennui is really just everyone else.

Abbott's "kinder, gentler polity" didn't last long. Unsurprisingly.

Weird Al Paca (SeekAltRoute), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 05:01 (fifteen years ago)

You have to wonder what the fuck the point is, if the election outcome'll be vastly different if we have multiple of em.

Why not have best of five or something, in that case.

queen of the toilets, which is in some ways the worst branch of royalty (Trayce), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 05:05 (fifteen years ago)

I think this election proved that people are fed up with both parties - hopefully a warning has been given and we can have a proper outcome without pandering to independents.

Australian Labor Party 5,866,277 50.01 -2.69

Liberal/National Coalition 5,865,010 49.99 +2.69

Liberal/National Coalition 5,871,015 49.96 +2.66

That's certainly neck-and-neck although Abbott's 'neck' is sort of the base of a penis so prob not a valid conclusion.

i don't know why the coalition freaks are apparently trying to force a new election, i'd think labor/greens would be more likely to win right now, and if people have to vote again because of their petty shenanigans they will be punished.

estela, Friday, 10 September 2010 02:14 (fifteen years ago)

The Coalition's relying upon scares to frighten people away from the EXTREME RADICAL Lab-Grn alliance. If they want to convince us they'd be good at running the county they might want to stop dicking about with scare tactics and actually do something.

That Annabel Crabb article made me want to punch walls. She has a fucking nerve saying that sort of thing when her oh so wacky caricatures passing for serious analysis are a MAJOR part of the problem she herself is talking about. She writes about politics as if it's sport, which it isn't, because sport just affects those who watch it. Politics affects EVERYONE and demands SERIOUS FUCKING COVERAGE of policies, their effects, rather than bullshit about personality and personal foibles which is all she deals in. She should be fired.

two hats in 3/4 time (edwardo), Friday, 10 September 2010 06:17 (fifteen years ago)

I would disagree vehemently with you if she weren't the ABC's online chief political writer. There are loads of people at the ABC who could be doing that job and producing serious work: Uhlmann, Kelly, Colvin, Cassidy, Ewart, etc etc. Dunno why they poached her for such an important position.

TS: Toad of Toad Hall v Wobbie of Wobbies World (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 September 2010 08:01 (fifteen years ago)

Also re Murdoch's cuntitude his crap has always been biased but I've never seen anything like this. He's not trying to hide it at all anymore. I dunno how long it'll be before he just sticks 'GILLARD IS A CUNT' on all the front pages.

Yesterday my mother told me thing were now so bad that 'even' the Herald Scum was warning people about the 'wild ride'. 'It says "GOOD LUCK AUSTRALIA"!!' she said. I explained for the billionth time Murdoch's incredible bias but it doesn't get through to the converted zombies.

it happens a lot up here, the coalition serfs are mean spirited and ignorant and total smug fucks about their dumb politics that they inherited, and hung onto, and will never think about or change. they are too foolish to see that they never benefit from their own votes.

one month passes...

this 4 Corners episode about the Katter/Windsor/Oakeshott 17-day alliance is fantastic, and should be interesting even to any non-mongs popping into the thread out of curiosity. All made from footage shot with them during the limbo period, and kept in confidence at the time.

Oakers bursting through Windsor's door while Abbott's inside, attempting to explain why it's impolite to ask him if he's full of it when he lies to the country, is the funniest thing I've seen on TV this year.
