seafood definitely needs refining. there are quite a few fish that i wouldn't vote for, but crab in almost all of its iterations would be high on my ballot.

also, hamburgers.

orakle-krake (Gukbe), Thursday, 22 July 2010 00:49 (fifteen years ago)

somebody needs to go through the food threads with the most screaming and pick out the noms

Grisly Addams (WmC), Thursday, 22 July 2010 00:50 (fifteen years ago)

this is gonna be EPIC.

hahaha, YES

shrimp should be one of the seafood subcategories, but further split between fried and broiled.

Grisly Addams (WmC), Thursday, 22 July 2010 01:04 (fifteen years ago)

drinks are not food

wmc I suggest you just go the dictator route like I did and use the suggestions to pick an arbitrary but reasonably diverse 64

iatee, Thursday, 22 July 2010 01:06 (fifteen years ago)

fondue
onion rings
pistachios
breakfast cereal
confit de canard

peter in montreal, Thursday, 22 July 2010 01:07 (fifteen years ago)

cause a poll to create the options for what will be 16 more polls is possibly too many polls xp

iatee, Thursday, 22 July 2010 01:08 (fifteen years ago)

I agree that alcohol needs it's own tourney. However I disagree w/the idea that alcohol is not food.

yes

Grisly Addams (WmC), Thursday, 22 July 2010 01:08 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I wanted to recommend beer but it's not really a food. I would feel bad, too, if beer won as a result. I know that I, personally, could seldom vote against beer.

mercy, sportsmanship, morality (Abbott), Thursday, 22 July 2010 01:09 (fifteen years ago)

Not really a food = not really a solid

mercy, sportsmanship, morality (Abbott), Thursday, 22 July 2010 01:09 (fifteen years ago)

Though I guess I'm accepting soup as food

Grisly Addams (WmC), Thursday, 22 July 2010 01:36 (fifteen years ago)

omg french fries. I may have found my Butler.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 22 July 2010 01:37 (fifteen years ago)

I made a quick pass through ILCooking New Answers for suggestions. Tomatoes, bacon, fries and cheese were the obvious ones.

Grisly Addams (WmC), Thursday, 22 July 2010 01:39 (fifteen years ago)

in what crazy world are french fries an underdog

iatee, Thursday, 22 July 2010 01:39 (fifteen years ago)

Grisly Addams (WmC), Thursday, 22 July 2010 01:51 (fifteen years ago)

BBQ ribs

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 22 July 2010 02:04 (fifteen years ago)

Oh my god, I love BBQ ribs.

mercy, sportsmanship, morality (Abbott), Thursday, 22 July 2010 02:07 (fifteen years ago)

From the grill, I'm thinking

Barbecue (smoked pork shoulder or beef brisket)
Ribs
Grilled Meats (other)

none of this using BBQ as a catchall for things cooked on a grill

I've never set foot in any Nutrition Nazi thread. What do I need to know from there besides kale?

Won't 'waffles' cause confusion between sweet waffles and potato waffles (which are waffly versatile)?

Also, there needs to be some good pasta and curry representation in the poll. And I heartily endorse fondue being in the running.

emil.y, Thursday, 22 July 2010 02:10 (fifteen years ago)

When "Earthbound" asked what my favorite food was, I always told it curry!

I also think there needs to be some clarification on the criteria for being a team on this tournament. You can't have something as broad as 'pies' going up against 'apples'.

emil.y, Thursday, 22 July 2010 02:15 (fifteen years ago)

When "Earthbound" asked what my favorite food was, I always told it curry!

I told it pizza. I was a very generic 12-year-old!

ledge, Thursday, 22 July 2010 08:44 (fifteen years ago)

this'll be a fun poll! I'd recommend keeping the categories pretty broad: e.g. cheese rather than mozzarella or camembert; pizza rather than Chicago deep-dish; salad rather than salad niçoise or tuna salad. There are cases where this'll be really tough: like, is sandwiches a single category? Do panini & cheesesteaks belong together? I don't know, & I guess if you're short on category ideas, break them up. But I don't think you'll be short on category ideas. For that reason it might be good to go with just 32 though: I wonder if by going to 64 if you're just going to get a bunch of weird subcategories vs. huge "main" categories & that the latter will end up making the first rounds totally uninteresting.

I mean you could safely split fruits into tropical & harvest fruit as Life Savers do it (how's that for precedent?), and avoid having strawberries against burritos. That just doesn't seem like a fair match-up.

oh, & I want to nominate savory pastries, including as a category empanadas, pasties, samosas, and so on. I know: they're all different! But Dylan has a bunch of different records too. You wouldn't want to poll 70s Stones vs. Gospel Dylan vs. Kate Bush vs. Hunky-Dory-era Bowie, would you?

24. peas/beans/lentils/pulses

I don't think these should be grouped together, it's like grouping lamb and cow together. I dislike peas but love lentils and most beans.

Tuomas, Thursday, 22 July 2010 12:59 (fifteen years ago)

remove:
custard (I love custard but I don't think it's canon)
sweet peas

Anti-Suggest Ban Order (acoleuthic), Thursday, 22 July 2010 13:00 (fifteen years ago)

Anti-Suggest Ban Order (acoleuthic), Thursday, 22 July 2010 13:04 (fifteen years ago)

remove mom's home cooking, that ain't a food it's a food source

Quantic Dream, So Hard To Beat (Will M.), Thursday, 22 July 2010 13:04 (fifteen years ago)

I wouldn't take meze instead of falafel (my top choice on WmC's list) or hummus.

Tuomas, Thursday, 22 July 2010 13:04 (fifteen years ago)

(xx-post)

Tuomas, Thursday, 22 July 2010 13:05 (fifteen years ago)

sardines are ilx canon tho.

one man meme-denier - jol in? (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 22 July 2010 13:05 (fifteen years ago)

I think the component parts of meze are too disparate to include it, or tapas, as a catchall. What if I love the grilled octopus but hate the saganaki?

Grisly Addams (WmC), Thursday, 22 July 2010 13:05 (fifteen years ago)

also bbq isn't a food it's a thing in the backyard, why not lump pork into bacon and make beef its own thing? also do all of the sausages (salami, hot dogs, "fresh sausages") need their own section? if peas and lentils don't even geto ne?

Quantic Dream, So Hard To Beat (Will M.), Thursday, 22 July 2010 13:06 (fifteen years ago)

guys, houmous (as it is correctly transliterated) is PART of meze, as is kebab and falafel - gather them all up in one compact and wondrous bundle!

one of the things with meze is that if you hate part of it there are loads of other parts to enjoy but w/e - also CHICKEN souvlaki? christ guys souvlaki is PORK

Anti-Suggest Ban Order (acoleuthic), Thursday, 22 July 2010 13:07 (fifteen years ago)

also couldn't ribs be included when considering the animal in question?

Quantic Dream, So Hard To Beat (Will M.), Thursday, 22 July 2010 13:07 (fifteen years ago)

oh wait 'souvlaki and kebabs' is there - cool, I know what I'm voting for

Anti-Suggest Ban Order (acoleuthic), Thursday, 22 July 2010 13:07 (fifteen years ago)

guys, houmous (as it is correctly transliterated) is PART of meze, as is kebab and falafel - gather them all up in one compact and wondrous bundle!

Er, some of us are veggies and want to vote for falafel and hummus but not kebab.

Tuomas, Thursday, 22 July 2010 13:10 (fifteen years ago)

I will fight for barbecue as a separate inclusion. It was painful enough combining pork shoulder and beef brisket.

I agree, sausages should be combined.

In general, if a food has enough devotion to get its own thread (eg "asparagus appointment") it was worth consideration for its own spot on the bracket. Broccoli should go. Fruits are tough, fruits are hard to combine into one big "fruit" category.

Grisly Addams (WmC), Thursday, 22 July 2010 13:11 (fifteen years ago)

if sushi and dim sum can be polled together then so can meze or tapas.

Anti-Suggest Ban Order (acoleuthic), Thursday, 22 July 2010 16:08 (fifteen years ago)

our souvlakis are slowly dived into chicken juice

You’re going off of her word that the farmer’s wife is the farmer’s wife? (dyao), Thursday, 22 July 2010 16:09 (fifteen years ago)

Souvlaki (Greek: Σουβλάκι) or souvlakia is a popular Greek fast food consisting of small pieces of meat and sometimes vegetables grilled on a skewer. It may be served on the skewer for eating out of hand, in a pita sandwich with garnishes and sauces, or on a dinner plate, often with fried potatoes or pilaf. The meat is traditionally lamb in Greece and Cyprus, or in modern times increasingly pork due to the lower cost.[1] In other countries and for tourists, souvlaki may be made with other meats such as beef, chicken and sometimes fish (especially swordfish).

iatee, Thursday, 22 July 2010 16:09 (fifteen years ago)

*calms down* Yeah, I KNOW you get all kinds of souvlaki. I'm just saying that pork is both the classical and the best sort. Lamb is better off grilled on the bone or made into shish kebab/whatever other sort of kebab you want - proper char-grilled souvlaki is traditionally pork, and nicest as such.

Chicken isn't a big deal in Cypriot cuisine, at ALL

Anti-Suggest Ban Order (acoleuthic), Thursday, 22 July 2010 16:09 (fifteen years ago)

OK whatever, it's traditionally lamb - generally in Cyprus and here I've had pork - but it's NOT FUCKING CHICKEN

grab you by the boo-boo and don't let go (kkvgz), Thursday, 22 July 2010 16:18 (fifteen years ago)

I only reacted like that because of this line

Presumably you've never been to a Greek restaurant

which was a combination of patronising and hysterically wrong

sure my earlier statement lacked finesse but I was in rant mode which should have been obvious

and my 'ok whatever' was because yeah I got it wrong between pork and lamb being 'traditional' (although I prefer pork and have ONLY had pork presented to me as souvlaki by Cypriot relatives here and abroad) - if I'd said 'typical' I'd have been right - I was merely trying to point out that chicken is NOT a traditional NOR typical souvlaki meat

Anti-Suggest Ban Order (acoleuthic), Thursday, 22 July 2010 16:23 (fifteen years ago)

I think they only thing we can all agree on is that lj doesn't know anything about greek food

he's an expert on cypriot food though

Grisly Addams (WmC), Thursday, 22 July 2010 16:25 (fifteen years ago)

chicken is NOT a traditional NOR typical souvlaki meat

Traditional, maybe. But saying it's not typical is simply factually wrong. There's not a Greek restaurant in my city that doesn't offer chicken souvlaki on the menu. But thanks for alerting me to the fact that I need to weigh whether or not you're in "rant mode" before deciding how literally to interpret whatever you write.

clemenza, Thursday, 22 July 2010 16:28 (fifteen years ago)

I think there's a large US/Europe cognitive dissonance here which I'm not handling sensibly

I've nothing against risotto, just think it's daft to pretend it's something magically other than rice with bits in.

one of the easy answers would be to take out tofu because it is not technically a ~food~ per se

This list is getting too all-encompassing. The more specific the competitors, the better. That means some people's favorites are going to have to be eliminated before the tourney begins, though. WmC, don't be afraid of hurting people's feelings...just curate a very competitive group of 64 and let's get this thing underway.

The way it is now, with such broad classifications for things, kind of takes the impact out of liking a specific food for what it is.

I think eating too many strawberries in a certain time period will kill you. Something about the seedy things on the exterior being poisonous if ingested in a large enough dose.

So yeah, strawberries, while delicious, are not ideal.
