Falafel, Crisps, Burritos, Crab

Goddam I love crab so much. I take it crisps means Britishes crisps? Will kinda miss berries but over burritos = not happening

flashing drill + penis fan (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:31 (fifteen years ago)

Falafel, Bagels, Burritos, Crab

wtf is a "crisp" anyway? is that just a potato chip? b/c of the stupid name I voted for bagels (which I don't really care about either, but at least I know what they are, and they have a cool name)

falafel rules, apple pie is nice but still.

burritos! one of the only foods I miss living over here in Olde Europe!

crab vs poutine, who cares, voted crab b/c "the crabs" is funny.

WOOD! GOBLINS! (NickB), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:51 (fifteen years ago)

Bad crisps are really rank tho. I had to think a bit before giving them the nod over bagels but it wd be outrageous fronting to vote the other way really.

flashing drill + penis fan (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:54 (fifteen years ago)

You can't have a bagel sandwich.

ninjas and lasers and gold and (snoball), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:55 (fifteen years ago)

Was stuck on crab vs poutine until I remembered soft-shell crab, then voted crab. Pie vs. falafel and potato chips vs. bagels my first two real "meh vs. meh" of this tourney.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:56 (fifteen years ago)

Pie vs. Falafel -- I'm not a huge lover of sweets, and I like a good fresh falafel (as long as someone else is making it), but I just had the best coconut custard pie I've ever eaten, along with a piece of really luscious chess pie. Pie wins.

Crisps vs. Bagels -- I eat a lot of corn chips and tortilla chips and the occasional potato chip, but I hate myself every time I do. They're just filler. The bagel wins it.

Berries vs. Burritos -- burritos are great, but there's no reason I can't lay all the inside ingredients out separately and eat them without calling it a burrito. I can't imagine a world without blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries.

Crab vs. Poutine -- fuck a poutine, somebody give me a case of (dungeness) crabs.

Grisly Addams (WmC), Saturday, 24 July 2010 21:01 (fifteen years ago)

Berries vs. Burritos - impossible

still they got me like beezus (Pillbox), Saturday, 24 July 2010 21:03 (fifteen years ago)

Falafel, Bagels, Burritos, Crab

Fuck this generic "berries" bullshit. I'm voting burrito over berries because I was given no particular berry to give a shit about.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 24 July 2010 21:04 (fifteen years ago)

Examples of botanical berries include:

* Bearberry (Arctostaphylos spp.)
* Barberry (Berberis; Berberidaceae)
* Crowberry (Empetrum spp.)
* Currant (Ribes spp.; Grossulariaceae), red, black, and white types
* Elderberry (Sambucus niger; Caprifoliaceae)
* Gooseberry (Ribes spp.; Grossulariaceae)
* Grape, Vitis vinifera
* Honeysuckle: the berries of some species are edible and are called honeyberries, but others are poisonous (Lonicera spp.; Caprifoliaceae)
* Lingonberry Vaccinium vitis-idaea
* Mayapple (Podophyllum spp.; Berberidaceae)
* Nannyberry or sheepberry (Viburnum spp.; Caprifoliaceae)
* Oregon-grape (Mahonia aquifolium; Berberidaceae)
* Strawberry Tree (Arbutus unedo), not to be confused with the actual strawberry (Fragaria)
* Tomato and other species of the family Solanaceae
* Banana
* Cranberry
* Watermelon

WOOD! GOBLINS! (NickB), Saturday, 24 July 2010 21:10 (fifteen years ago)

For real. If the choice was between burritos and blackberries or whatever, I'd have a harder time. "Berries" is way too broad in scope.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 24 July 2010 21:12 (fifteen years ago)

also avocado but they got their own so whatever

still: Falafel, Crisps, Burritos, Crab

although like a bunch of other people this one has an eh vs eh for me, because I eat neither crab nor poutine and never particularly cared about either when I did eat them: I ate some nice crab once in Bangkok, though, so that wins

Grisly Addams (WmC), Saturday, 24 July 2010 22:05 (fifteen years ago)

this is the poll that breaks my streak of picking the unhealthy option every time. poutine... it's just too much.

no, you're dead right, it's a macaroon (ledge), Saturday, 24 July 2010 22:09 (fifteen years ago)

the weird thing about poutine is that it looks incredibly simple to make, but there aren't really that many places that get it right.

peter in montreal, Saturday, 24 July 2010 22:21 (fifteen years ago)

Falafel, Bagels, Burritos, Poutine

it hurts to vote against berries cause technically 'blueberries' are my answer to 'what's your favorite food?' - but since they're just a small member of that much larger group, no way I'm voting for that over burritos.

man, falafel, bagels, burritos and berries could basically be a final four for me.

iatee, Saturday, 24 July 2010 22:30 (fifteen years ago)

yeah blueberries are what are tripping me up in the berries v. burritos choice

horseshoe, Saturday, 24 July 2010 22:31 (fifteen years ago)

blueberry pie is also the pie that makes pie all-time for me

horseshoe, Saturday, 24 July 2010 22:31 (fifteen years ago)

yeah I'd take a burrito over a bowl of mixed berries, but not over a bowl of blueberries, so that's how I'm reasoning it out

iatee, Saturday, 24 July 2010 22:32 (fifteen years ago)

I didn't know what "poutine" was either, had to google it. I kinda feel bad for voting for such a disgusting thing, but as vegetarian I still had to choose it, as crab is even more disgusting.

Falafel is pretty much my favourite veggie dish ever, but I wish it had been matched with something similar to it in function, instead of such a wide and varied category as "sweet pies". Still, falafel.

Tuomas, Saturday, 24 July 2010 22:32 (fifteen years ago)

Tuomas, vegetarian gravy is possible (made with a good rich roasted vegetable stock, it would be really good), so vegetarian poutine is possible.

Grisly Addams (WmC), Saturday, 24 July 2010 22:34 (fifteen years ago)

for the poutine objectors i totally get why on the surface it seems dull or gross (my thoughts until some got forced on me) but then you have a good poutine and your eyes are opened to the stars

"The Dad" from Gay Dad (King Boy Pato), Saturday, 24 July 2010 23:24 (fifteen years ago)

Before I vote in this one, does "sweet pies" include apple and/or pumpkin? Or are those considered "savory"? (I definitely like them more the more savory, and less sweet, they are, but I need some guidance here. Does "savory" mean, like, chicken pot pies or something?)

xhuxk, Sunday, 25 July 2010 00:36 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, sweet pies = all dessert pies; apple, pumpkin, custard, etc
savory = chicken pot pie, UK meat pies, that sort of thing

My totem animal is a hamburger. (WmC), Sunday, 25 July 2010 00:39 (fifteen years ago)

Okay, in that case I'll go Sweet Pies, Bagels, Burritos, Crab, even though the vast majority of sweet pies just make me gag. At least I like a couple. (Falafel always just tasted bleh to me; probably I just haven't had the good stuff. Though I'd probably find a higher percentage of falafel than sweet pies bearable. But still.)

xhuxk, Sunday, 25 July 2010 00:42 (fifteen years ago)

Sweet Pies, Crisps, Berries, Crab

ridiculously easy. falafel is just one kinda fried vegetable patty, bagels are just one kind of bread, berries = the best food period, and poutine is revolting (and delicious, but still revolting).

"Chips" = French fries, right? And actually cheese curd, apparently. Whatever that is. Sounds stomach-turning. Anyway, pretty sure I tried some poutine in Montreal once, to no avail. (Fries with gravy are definitely better than fries w/o, though.)

xhuxk, Sunday, 25 July 2010 12:00 (fifteen years ago)

Sweet Pies, Bagels, Berries, Poutine

I love most types of pie, especially pecan, apple, coconut, blueberry, and on and on. Royer's Round Top Cafe has some of the best pie in the world.

I chose bagels although these days I probably eat more chips (crisps? are you for real?). Bagels are a sentimental favorite. Maybe I'll scoop up my son and take him over to Einstein's right now.

Berries because, despite my love for Mexican and Mexican varients, I find burritos to be kind of gross. Too much stuff shoveled into one enormous wrapper. Berries are good in pies!

Poutine, even though the only time I've ever had poutine was at Frank in Austin. I have no idea how authentic it was, but it was derned yummy.

horseshoe, Sunday, 25 July 2010 20:08 (fifteen years ago)

Flaffle. not sweet therefore WIN
Crisps. Bagels here are typically inedible novelty items, maybe they're great in NYC or somewhere, I dunno. Crisps are the food of the Lord Himself.
Berries = strawberries, blackberries, blueberries... vs Chiquito's. hmm. again, maybe they're amazing in america or somewhere
Crab is nice. Poutine appears to be cheesy chips. Cheesy chips got banned from our school canteen because it was the cheapest thing you could buy and so you'd have more money left over for fiery gobstoppers and cigs. So crab for being nice and not causing heart attacks, either directly, or by proxy at school.

iatee, Sunday, 25 July 2010 20:55 (fifteen years ago)

I have bramble bushes in my garden too - they're pretty common. On my big walk recently I found some roadside brambles and slaked my hunger effectively therefrom.

Anti-Suggest Ban Order (acoleuthic), Sunday, 25 July 2010 20:56 (fifteen years ago)

our version of 'gardens/roadside brambles' is taco trucks, which are better imo cause you can also get a soda

iatee, Sunday, 25 July 2010 20:59 (fifteen years ago)

and our version of taco trucks are kebab vans, which are better imo because FUCK YOU I'M CYPRIOT kebabs are much lighter upon the palate

I've never actually had a taco or a burrito, yeah, I know (although I've had plenty of stuff DESCRIBED as tacos and burritos made by Spanish-speaking folk so really idk)

A good kebab has a dry-edged, salad-stuffed juiciness to it that seems a world away from taco slop - it's much airier and for me at least more refreshing - and proper kebabs, as opposed to fast-food ones, are meat at p much its most tasty, but again, though, I ought to head across the Atlantic before dismissing Mexican food.

Anti-Suggest Ban Order (acoleuthic), Sunday, 25 July 2010 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

horseshoe, Monday, 26 July 2010 00:00 (fifteen years ago)

actual tacos are largely about the interplay of fresh salad-stuffs (a little lettuce, a little radish) & fillings

the best taco truck tacos consist of: meat & salsa (salsa could include extra helpings of onions and cilantro) - radishes are served on the side, as are sometimes, if you are v v fortunate, amazing pickled carrots. If someone were a vegetarian, I could totally see not voting for tacos.

sarahel, Monday, 26 July 2010 08:24 (fifteen years ago)

You're talking about what's standard in California, I think (and maybe with NYC, have basically no experience there). In Texas bean and cheese tacos are totally standard (and certainly worthy of "the best" status)---the refritos are often cooked in lard, but there are plenty of places that cook veg refritos and are still great. Plus as something to have at hand around the house, it's tough to beat bean and cheese tacos.

Bagels over falafel narrowly for me, but the general question of Ashkenazic vs. Sephardic is a tough one -- Iraqi and Yemeni Israelis make some amazing freaking food but in the end I think my sentimental attachment to pickled herring, stuffed cabbage, lox and bagel, whitefish salad, and pastrami, for god's sake, pastrami! keeps me home with my people.

We shall return to this important issue in round 2.

Will M, if you mix those wild blueberries with sugar and lemon juice, and heat them over low heat until they begin to break down, and maybe stir through a little corn starch to thicken, and ladle them onto a warm flour tortilla and then either deep fry it or pan-fry it in some butter, and then spoon a little whipped cream or powdered sugar or even some plain yogurt across top, you will thank me later
