ha i do totally love lamb. it features heavily in the regional cooking of the region of india my parents are from. i'm, like, genetically programmed to find it delicious.

horseshoe, Saturday, 24 July 2010 22:51 (fifteen years ago)

Hot Dogs, Ice Cream, Spinach, Lamb

lentils fucking suck, HARD choice here actually but im taking it as just a tomato being a tomato so went w/variety, spinach is one of the best foods ever (although wait did broccoli get cut because if so SHAKING MY FIST AT YOU WMC), lamb only thx to middle eastern context and watermelon is ehhhh whatever

xpost 100% agree w/horsehoe re: melons. bleh and boring. cucumbers OTOH are the fucking shit and i love them

this wasn't hard for me - the one I'm particularly adamant about is Tomatoes - goddamn I love tomatoes

Hot Dogs, Ice Cream, Savory Pies, Lamb

ciderpress, Saturday, 24 July 2010 22:53 (fifteen years ago)

i don't think i've taken longer than like 2 seconds to vote in any of these.

Lentils, tomatoes, spinach, watermelon. Even if I did eat meat, I think it makes sense to choose the ones that offer more versatility to your diet instead of a particular dish like hot dog whose removal would narrow it only a little.

Tuomas, Saturday, 24 July 2010 22:58 (fifteen years ago)

wow tbh i didn't even realize that spinach was the contender against savory pies. i love spinach!

but not enough.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 24 July 2010 23:00 (fifteen years ago)

savory pies can contain spinach, so i'll go for that even though i love raw spinach A LOT and eat it almost every day
could not care less about lamb or watermelon, so voted Lentils, Tomatoes, Savory Pies, Watermelon

here's what you do with a watermelon; don't cut it into salices, instead, cut it in half and then use a long knife and cut that shit into big raectangular cubes, scoop em out with a spoon. If you got a nice juicy sweet melon, put one of them cubes in your mouth, just crush on it, let all that sweet juice run into your gullet, maybe chill it first if the day is really hot

for lamb, go to inner Mongolia, they'll do you right

sorry horseshoe. I really honestly do love ice-cream, but I think of it as a nice treat, an indulgence, whereas tomatoes are an absolutely staple part of most cooking I truly love, and I can eat the small ones like popcorn - tomato-laden bruschetta is just...amazing, a full meal and a healthy one

Hot Dogs vs. Lentils -- hmmm, ground up pig snouts and linoleum vs. lentils. I like hot dogs, and have had some great bunned-up sausages, but lentils in this round.

Tomatoes vs. Ice Cream -- this is like Sophie's Choice or something. Ice cream is heaven (and I live where Blue Bell is de rigeur), but the amazing variety of heirloom tomatoes wins it. Bonus points for growing my own.

Spinach vs. Savory Pies -- kinda tough choice, not really committed to either one...spinach

Watermelon vs. Lamb -- love the flavor of watermelon, can't eat it. Love lamb, can it it LOTS.

Grisly Addams (WmC), Saturday, 24 July 2010 23:36 (fifteen years ago)

Voted Lentils, Ice Cream, Spinach, Lamb, even though I maybe only eat ice cream once a year. (Used to eat Haagan Dasz coffee ice cream first thing in the morning, back in the late '90s, though.) I pretty much eat spinach (raw, as a salad) every day these days. Love lamb; just never cook it because I haven't figured out how/where to buy it. Like lentils if they're there. Doubt I'll ever want to eat watermelon or a hot dog again; tomatoes I mostly try to avoid because the acid messes with my stomach.

xhuxk, Sunday, 25 July 2010 00:00 (fifteen years ago)

lentils. ice cream. spinach. watermelon.

these were all easy for me except the last, because i only like watermelon occasionally, but i don't meat so it's kind of a default win. (love tomatoes, but vs. ice cream? c'mon.)

a tenth level which features a single castle (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 25 July 2010 00:18 (fifteen years ago)

and tbh, if the choice were limited to "tomatoes straight out of the garden," it would be harder. but yr average tomato is of such suspect quality, even vs. yr average ice cream, that the whole category is degraded.

a tenth level which features a single castle (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 25 July 2010 00:20 (fifteen years ago)

lentils tomatoes savory pies lamb

tomatoes vs. ice cream - HOW 2 CHOOSE??? both such excellent summertime delights. But tomatoes add wonderfulness to pot roasts and beans and pasta sauces and go so well w/ fresh mozzarella and basil.

spinach is very meh, there are better greens.

Hot dogs, tomatoes, savory pies, lamb.

HOT DOGS > lentils: Always think of myself as liking lentils but whenever I actually make them I feel bored. Not gonna lie, my vote here is actually for beanie weenie.

TOMATOES > ice cream. Seemed hard until I really thought about it. Of the really amazingly delicious things humankind can do with huge amounts of dairy fat, 90% are cheese. And some of the rest is butter. Ice cream relies too much on sugar and I just don't hold it in the same regard, as much as I enjoy it. Tomatoes, on the other hand -- I buy about 10 lbs a week all summer long and still I'm always running out. There is nothing you can't do with a tomato.

LAMB > watermelon. Really like both. But lamb is the best red meat while watermelon is no higher than second among melons and is probably tied with cantaloupe, well behind honeydew. On the other side, watermelon is really incredible with feta and mint. But so is lamb!

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 25 July 2010 00:34 (fifteen years ago)

Hot dogs like frankfurter weird sausages or like proper sausages in a hot dog roll - or a baguette, if you want to take it up a gear? This is U&K.

Not the real Village People, Sunday, 25 July 2010 06:39 (fifteen years ago)

If you need a sausage in a baguette for it to win your vote, just go with lentils. Hot dogs will do just fine.

I DIED, Sunday, 25 July 2010 06:51 (fifteen years ago)

Lentils, Ice Cream, Savory Pies, Lamb

Let me not speak ill of hot dogs so as not to distract you from the godhead that is green lentils + onion & olive oil, plus lardons i.e. BACON: an Auvergnian delight that will rearrange your world. Adding a bit of jambon d'Auvergne is typical & nice too but really the heart is there without it. & lentil soup for me is ultimate comfort food. If I went veg I'd eat lentils daily: packed with protein, as close to meat as plants get.

yeesh yeah a good tomato, bursting with juice, is decadent, like sex in food; but they're only that way for a few weeks a year. Whereas ice cream in the midwest USA, or gelato in Italy, or dondurma in Turkey, is excellent year-round.

lamb over watermelon b/c there's a lot of mediocre watermelon around: if they're really fresh, they can be great. The seeds are pretty annoying though. & lamb is fab.

Hot Dogs, Ice Cream, Spinach, Lamb

Most lentils (except in some Indian food contexts) are pretty unpleasant to me. I love Hot Dogs, especially Chicago style and I love pretty much everything on the menu at Frank in Austin.

Ice Cream vs Tomatoes is difficult. I love both, but these days I have a lot more Ice Cream. Yummy, but my ass ain't getting much smaller.

Savory Pies? Is this some kind of British thing? Don't many of these pies have spinach in them? I don't know, maybe I like savory pies, maybe not. I know that do love creamed spinach and it's one of the few things that I can cook well.

I chose lamb, but I wasn't very passionate about this choice.

WmC I think you have the most heartbreaking allergy next to maybe being allergic to hugs, or haircuts.

Warum habt Ihr mich totgefüttert? (Abbott), Sunday, 25 July 2010 16:03 (fifteen years ago)

It is frustrating. There are a couple of foods that I've sort of conned myself into thinking I don't like, when the reality is that they're delicious but kick up an allergic reaction. And just about everything I'm allergic to, I'm only allergic to it raw -- if it's cooked, I can eat it all day.

It's actually much less severe than it used to be! I can actually eat a half cup or so of melon chunks before the itching starts now. The first time I ate watermelon I was eight or so, and my mom thought she was going to have to take me to the E.R.

Re Ice Cream:

About a year ago, in the darker days of the economic downturn, Safeway reduced the amount of ice cream in its containers from 2 quarts to 1.5 quarts, yet kept the price the same ($2.99 in my area). Anyway, I was shopping today and noticed that Safeway had brought back the 2 quart size container of ice cream! With a sign that reads "NEW LARGER SIZE" on the packaging! And it costs $3.69!

Hot Dogs, Tomatoes, Savory Pies, Lamb

I don't like to think about how hot dogs are created. As far as I can tell, it involves squishing chicken remains through a squishing machine, and forming the resultant sludge into sausage shapes. anyway, fuck it, they add enough salt for it to be tasty. Lentils are nice and healthy and worthy and whatever, but hot dogs are total easy comfort food, perfect for L and I having hangovers & having to feed the nestlings with minimum effort.

Tomatoes. this is a close one because tomatoes basically fill lots of roles, for which they get very little credit. the john o'shea of food. ice cream hurts my fucking teeth, although is quite tasty with mint and choc chip. very fresh toms and basil and olive oil trump that though. just.

Savoury Pies. Pies to savour. I love spinach. I really really love spinach. Saag Paneer- fucking hell, that stuff is amazing. I considered a mutiny at this point. How dare you pitch spinach against pies, WmC, you bastard. Pie is my favourite food. I stanned for it to be included, I have been arguing with iatee about it over the last few days, I maintain that there is no greater food than good pie. I feel as if i want to be a pie evangelist, and tour America with beautiful and yummy pies, telethon pies, talking in tongues pies, pies PIES pies PIES I love pies. I don't have a scanner but one of the Jamie )Oliver books has a picture of Chicken And Leek Pie which is better than any of your American PORN. ok, no I do not get aroused by pie. but I do like it a hell of a lot.

Lamb. duh.

Savoury Pies versus Spinach was for you what Pizza versus Olives was for me, by the looks of it - all great but siding with the dish rather than the raw foodstuff

chicken remains? chickens are like the only animal not in hot dogs!

iatee, Sunday, 25 July 2010 21:09 (fifteen years ago)

it involves squishing chicken remains through a squishing machine

actually pork and beef mostly, but chicken/turkey dogs are making inroads

Pies are as iconic and sacred as food gets in these parts. As respectable as spinach is, a loss for the humble pie just doest bear thinking about. Com on mongs, help a sheepfuxor brother out.

Hot Dogs, Tomatoes, Spinach, Watermelon

by far the toughest round. other than hot dogs vs. lentils, neither of which i really care about. but hot dogs = good/nasty american summer food, so that.

tomatoes beat almost any food on the planet, but man i'm struggling vs. ice cream. like cheese or bread, ice cream's a kind of miracle, like food from the world beyond. but really just a treat, not essential to cuisine in general, so has to go.

spinach vs. savory pie is anther weird, tough call. if i were english, i suppose i'd go the other way. but i'm not. i never eat savory pie, delicious as it is. and i eat a LOT of spinach. so that.

god and watermelon vs. lamb... i've already given up ice cream, you can't ask me to give up watermelon, too. and i guess i could just live with like beef and pork and venison, etc. sob.

spinach over savory pies is dumb & I'd had more time to spend around here I'd have lobbied stronger for savory pies on the basis of the mighty salteña, nem, and jambon en croûte. Tears in rain.

Euler, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 06:24 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah I mean spinach can even be a savoury pie component. You could have had both you idiots!

JimD, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 06:29 (fifteen years ago)

you cannot have fresh spinach as savory pie component. nor something simple as sauteed/steamed spinach, chopped or not, with fat & garlic or not. mushroom pie is awesome, but i never eat it and would happily make the sacrifice just so i could order gomae at sushi joints.

I think what makes them so fun is that you can vote totally without guilt? Like, I have no way of making an informed vote on Can vs Biggie or whatever, I just don't have the musical knowledge, but pizza? That is a thing that I have eaten.
