shit just got real

British Burrito (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 13:07 (fifteen years ago)

Pasta vs. Curry

^ basically impossible

Chaim Poutine (NickB), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 13:07 (fifteen years ago)

Pastries, Hard Cheeses, Curry, Pizza.

I did it quickly so I didn't have to choose between Pasta and Curry - rationale being that Indian food has gotta have a fair crack at beating Pizza in the next round - it's a bit TOO Italian otherwise

mind you a good plate of Pasta...my god...

British Burrito (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 13:09 (fifteen years ago)

can we please have "curry" defined? apologies if this was done early. does it mean "a curry" as in "any combination of meat and/or vegetables in curry sauce," or is it just the spice mixture?

Pizza vs. Salad is the contest that Pizza vs. Sandwich wanted to be, how can I live without salad? How can I live without pizza?

gross rainbow of haerosmith (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 13:12 (fifteen years ago)

This whole section is basically "foods that will all heartbreakingly lose to Pizza in the end" - it's like having the Grim Reaper in your study group

British Burrito (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 13:13 (fifteen years ago)

Bacon, Hard Cheeses, Pasta, Pizza.

Bacon vs pastries was the only one I was dithering about, but wasn't too hard to choose in the end. I was also going to say that my choices reflect quite how unhealthy my diet is, but then there is only one healthy option in this round, and it's up against pizza, so doesn't stand a chance.

emil.y, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 13:14 (fifteen years ago)

Aero: In my mind I was thinking the former, but left it intentionally vague and I believe some voters incorporated the latter into their deliberations.

My totem animal is a hamburger. (WmC), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 13:15 (fifteen years ago)

but yeah I predict this poll will have the best LOSING four of any

um curry and pasta can be healthy you know? and pastries aren't exactly bad for you?

British Burrito (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 13:16 (fifteen years ago)

pasta vs. curry is a crime

chuck entertainment cheese (crüt), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 13:16 (fifteen years ago)

can we please have "curry" defined?

I've been processing the options by asking to myself 'If you walked into a local restaurant and could speak no word other than 'curry', what would you end up with?'.

Chaim Poutine (NickB), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 13:16 (fifteen years ago)

curry pasta

chuck entertainment cheese (crüt), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 13:17 (fifteen years ago)

um curry and pasta can be healthy you know? and pastries aren't exactly bad for you?

Pastries are definitely not good for you, man. Lots of butter and sugar and shit.

And yeah, curry and pasta don't have to be unhealthy, but they're not exactly paragons of food virtue.

emil.y, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 13:18 (fifteen years ago)

pretty shocked to find myself considering a vote for salad over pizza but I had a greens mix with gorgonzola and candied pecans the other night as an appetizer for a pizza and guess which was better the salad or the pizza here I'll relieve the suspense, it was the salad, the salad was better than the pizza, it was the salad

gross rainbow of haerosmith (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 13:24 (fifteen years ago)

iatee, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 13:25 (fifteen years ago)

Couldn't you have just had that salad on the pizza and called it a pizza?

Chaim Poutine (NickB), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 13:25 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, pizza can contain salad, salad can't contain pizza

British Burrito (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 13:26 (fifteen years ago)

not even my salad

although my salad is generally tomato salad and a vote against salad is the final nail in the Solanaceae coffin

British Burrito (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 13:27 (fifteen years ago)

it is factually true, though; you could dump a salad on a pizza and then roll it up into a gigantic pizza-salad burrito

I don't know why you'd want to do that, but it's physically possible

Predicting this poll will finally kill off the whole Internet Loves Bacon nonsense (even though I do love bacon, it can't compete with the variety of options the word pastries allows).

Going pastries/chicken/pasta/pizza & feeling bad for poor old salad who didn't stand a chance and was just trying to help people.

we won't make a darraghmac out of a crisis (onimo), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 13:41 (fifteen years ago)

i love greens on pizza, so i voted pizza

but otherwise i voted flavor density: BACON, HARD CHEESES, CURRY, PIZZA

please note: that was on the assumption that curry = all dishes containing a blend known as curry. if it's that nasty brown sauce thrown on fries at bars, i regret my choice. esp. since i have forsaken my ultimate comfort food: pasta with nothing but parmesan.

things I have learned from this poll: british people call arugula 'rocket'

iatee, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 13:48 (fifteen years ago)

The other three are easy, but pastries vs. bacon is a murderous choice. I'll probably wait until the last minute and then just flip a coin.

My totem animal is a hamburger. (WmC), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 13:49 (fifteen years ago)

onimo, bacon's going to win this tournament. the power of the "MMM BACON OMG" sentiment runs strong. how do you think bacon made it this far?

gross rainbow of haerosmith (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 13:52 (fifteen years ago)

I dunno peanut butter put up a pretty good fight against bacon

iatee, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 13:53 (fifteen years ago)

that was hard for me too, but i decided on the flavor density ticket. pastries are just not as intensely flavorful as bacon. now i am having regrets because they are -- they ARE! -- they're just more subtly flavorful.

i think pizza will win

ghee hee hee (La Lechera), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 13:53 (fifteen years ago)

things I have learned from this poll: british people call arugula 'rocket'

it's kind of a shame you had to learn it from this poll - I was at a restaurant during my 1st or 2nd trip to England trying to figure out what to eat and half the stuff on it contained "rockets" and I thought "man oh man what the hell is goin on"

chicken curry salad is fine, not with bacon tho you are correct

hard cheese vs nearly anything else would have put up a fight, maybe.

no real qualms over any of the rest.

irish pastry vs irish bacon is quite a different proposition than the respective choices you may face in other countries maybe.

"It's far from 'lol' you were reared, boy" (darraghmac), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:00 (fifteen years ago)

onimo, bacon's going to win this tournament. the power of the "MMM BACON OMG" sentiment runs strong. how do you think bacon made it this far?

Even if it beat pastries, which would be wrong, I can't see it getting out of a bracket with pizza in it. It's time for the bacon backlash.

There's a thread somewhere where everyone piles on the OMG BACON people, isn't there? Maybe it turned into another OMG BACON thread, I can't remember.

So glad Pizza and Bacon will meet relatively early. IF Bacon beats Pastries and Cheese/Chicken, which it shouldn't.

Haha, Onimo just said that!

British Burrito (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:06 (fifteen years ago)

soda bread also good for open faced sandwiches- yr soft cheeses & smoked salmon, what have you

a MUST with a hearty soup

great with strong red cheddar & good smoky hams.

now i'm getting some on the way home.

Easiest one ever, bacon & chicken & pasta are on my BOYCOTT list because shits are well overrated (bacon: the most irritatingly overused cut of pork, chicken: the boringest and most misused of birds, pasta: the depressed-saggy-japanese-salaryman of carbohydrates). Others win on default. Salad vs. pizza however is brutal because it confronts me with the "who i am" vs. "who i probably should be if i want to start shitting on the reg" dichotomy.

I guess we're going to say goodbye to curry. My feeling is it hasn't permeated the culinary consciousness in the US anywhere near as much as it has in the UK.

@s1ocki that is fair -- i have not tried the best of the best (i think the best chicken i have had is probs romados (i had portugalia's and tbh i didn't like it as much) and the best pasta i had is n/a because i have just had junk pasta) but the two of them are just so maligned in my mind by the imitators that i can't separate the great from the swaths of junk out there. especially chicken. for every delicious bird there are 500 pieces of crap that are like "well, we need to put a meat in-- how about chicken cos it kinda just feels like meat in the mouth and tastes like water with a little dirt in it" dishes. i'm scarred.

^^^this has happened enough times in my life to know that certain kinds of salads are way more reliable than pizza. like i know we have all had some ~bad salads~ (i am looking at YOU, the hospital!), but generally speaking you can look at the list of ingredients of a salad on a menu, and have a pretty decent idea of what you're getting. and then you can order any old slice of pizza and it's like who fucking knows, maybe this place has shitty pizza

tho granted the worst salad is probably not as bad as the worst pizza, and i have had pizza in england! made in a curry shop!

Pastries
I'm going to take a controversial stance on pastries to encompass anything made with pastry - including both savoury and sweet pies! even though both were voted out by a bunch of disgusting savages. I'm going to continue to mentally put pies in extant categories right to the end. So if this thing ends up being won by soup or w/e, for me this will be "soup, including savoury pies". it's the only way to get justice.

Hard Cheeses - would miss slightly more than chicken. Although at the moment I'm supposed to be keeping away from cheese to stop me from being a fattay. Actually, wait, just thinking about what fits into the hard cheese category - cheddar. cheshire. stilton. emmenthal. gouda. manchego. paneer. - cheese a clearer winner than I first thought

Curry - brit definition, no contest . Pasta just tends to get in the way of nice food, and for me its a myth that its somehow elevated in the hands of good italian chefs. the price gets elevated, definitely, they must make some fucking profit on pasta dishes, but it's always disappointingly close to something I could cook easily at home. And I'm a terrible cook.

Salad. from the garden is fresh and lovely. a good restaurant caesar salad is one of lifes joys and go-to for wanting to feel healthier after a night out. I'm not going to knock pizza, can be great, but good salad is eating pure sunshine.

salad seems such an arbitrary designation. like, most of the things i like that come in a salad also come on a pizza. except for beets. but i could have roasted beets and consider them "beets" and not "salad" - so, pizza.
