Chaim Poutine (NickB), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:29 (fifteen years ago)

Falafel, berries, soup, fish.

Falafel is like one of the top 10 foods of all time, and unlike with tofu, I can't imagine even meat-eaters hating a proper falafel.

Steak vs. fish was a head-scratcher for a vegetarian, but back from the day when I was eating those things, I remember fish having more nuance. Steak is just echhh! Obviously fish tends to be more ethical too.

Bagels, I don't think I'll ever understand that. It just tastes like dry bread to me.

Tuomas, Thursday, 29 July 2010 06:05 (fifteen years ago)

I am a cook of ideas, not food; though I guess I am a cook like you in that I love to cook food! & actually I like soup lots but I'm not passionate about it today (the cake battle still burns & it will take time for those wounds to heal).

We make a fabulous Thai soup that is sadly not veg friendly as it depends on a chicken broth but actually the key is obv. coconut milk & we can all join in celebrating that element of soup I think.

Euler, Thursday, 29 July 2010 06:57 (fifteen years ago)

OH SHIT i just voted for steak by misteak. Bring on the sock... also nearly reflexively voted for bagels because lol vegetarian (yes i know bagels are veggie too), but i never eat bagels and quite like falafel.

ledge, Thursday, 29 July 2010 08:53 (fifteen years ago)

iatee ON SOME MONEY right from the start:

Falafel, Berries, Soup, Steak

that is how some shit needs to go down.

and i realize i am a savages voting steak (one measly cow!) over all kinds of fish, but sacrifices must. burned cow knowes no equal, includes ribs, strips, flanks, briskets, etc. would give up all other meats (including fish, but luckily, not including shellfish!) just to eat the meats of a cow.

falafel = who gives a shit, but at least it's better than round bread. berries over crab is easy, cuz at least u can still eat lobster. and you'd rather do that anyway. or shrimp! kebaps are some on as tick bullshit, and soup eats like a meal, so that. which brings us back to cow vs. fish and about which i have said (as a disgusting savage) COW. i take cow over all you slippery bounty of the sea. fight me if you wanna, but ho ha ha, u can't because you are unable to breathe air. so u lose ha suckers.

oh man, that smarts! in retrospect, i do feel that i've wronged the bagel with my vote against it. i lived on bagels for the summer of '87. i bonded with my grandparents over bagels. that should have counted for something.

ghee hee hee (La Lechera), Thursday, 29 July 2010 12:21 (fifteen years ago)

I lived the summer of ´96 on cheap frozen pizzas, but even then I thought it was disgusting.

Tuomas, Thursday, 29 July 2010 12:23 (fifteen years ago)

is there an option for 'cheap, frozen' pizzas?

just again, i thought the spirit of the poll was voting for good examples of the options offered, or what's the point?

iatee, Thursday, 29 July 2010 12:29 (fifteen years ago)

this summer of bagels is my childhood, and they were good bagels. they didn't do anything wrong to me. they nourished me as well as they could -- which, let's face it, was not very well -- and didn't cause me any harm.

i guess either one could win and i would be happy. cannot say the same for BERRIES vs CRAB.

Surprised that fish seems to be destroying steak so far - I know it's more versatile and there's a bigger variety of fish & recipes etc etc but man a great steak is just about as satisfying a thing as you can eat sometimes.

berries because a) they're amazing and b) crab beat poutine and i cannot accept this and c) crabs looks like demons

soup and kebabs was tough but when i think about some of the best meals in my life, not necessarily by flavour but a combo of that + how damn GOOD i felt after, no question. soup includes BUTTERNUT SQUASH soup and i can't ignore that. sorry, kebabs.

fish and steak is a sad state of affairs, i know steak is gonna win but you know what? if i went all veg i'd miss salmon and tuna and all those whitefish before i missed a ny strip.

iatee, Thursday, 29 July 2010 13:32 (fifteen years ago)

Fish vs. Steak sucks as a food choice because there's not vegetarian option.

I ended up voting for Steak purely because I'm allergic to fish, and a steak would violate me morally, but eating a fish could actually kill me.

of course, if you would look up a recipe for bagels, and, in approximately ninety seconds' worth of reading, learn exactly "what's so special" about the way bagel dough is prepared and what's unique about the way in which that dough is prepared -- but hey, why expend the effort when it's so much fun to frustrate people by sitting around saying "I don't understand" over & over?

People don't eat them now. A few that looked vaguely like human faces got thrown back (the spirits of dead samurai, or something), had a better survival rate etc. to force them to more and more resemble them. So it's a pretty good example of artificial selection. (voted crab, btw)

textbook blows on the head (dowd), Thursday, 29 July 2010 14:02 (fifteen years ago)

when it comes to bread, it's really not that complicated. you know why france has the best bread in the world? two reasons:

1. people dedicate their lives to it and have for generations
2. PEOPLE EAT A SHITTON OF BREAD

and really #2 is more important. people eat a shitton of bread = you can go into any bakery and come out with a fresh loaf because they've making it constantly. and fresh bread is objectively better.

same is true w/ bagels. in places where the bagel turnover is crazy high - this doesn't necessarily have to be new york - they're going to be making and selling lots of bagels = one you eat is going to have been made pretty recently. that place does not exsit in finland because there isn't massive bagel consumption afaik.

iatee, Thursday, 29 July 2010 14:04 (fifteen years ago)

they've been*

iatee, Thursday, 29 July 2010 14:05 (fifteen years ago)

xpost amending my previous post - that second "prepared" should have some synonym for "cooked" but "cooked" isn't the right word, nor is "baked," entirely, which is the point. however, let's be clear, though, bagels aren't really even close to the best bread. among the various breads of the world there are some very intense competitors.

Tuomas, if I said that the only person I'd ever heard speaking Finnish had said to me "No me quiero ir al infierno," and I said that on the basis of that exchange I had a pretty good grasp of Finnish, you'd say to me that that was very nice for me to think so, but that that wasn't Finnish, it was Spanish, right? If the only bagels you've had taste like "dried bread," then cool, you've never been to Montreal and had the late-night bagels that are like God's mercy in a rounded form, and you've never been to Murray's. Or had a sandwich made with a bagel, which in some arrangements provides us with a Platonic ideal of Sandwich.

Just read through this thread for the first time and have to weigh in on the bagels thing, and iatee and M. aerosmith are entirely correct. I live in a neighborhood in Cleveland that's largely Jewish, and there's no shortage of awesome fresh bagels. Just down the street from me is Bialy's Bagels, which I think is in its third generation of local ownership, and they are making them all the time. They take cash only, and it's 85 cents a bagel. Absolute heaven.

What's all this "let's be reasonable" stuff all about - this is explicitly a FIGHT thread - if every bagel you've ever eaten, including the freshly made ones you've eaten travelling in Home of Bagel, is shitty boring dry bread then I think you're entitled to take that view even if you are a Finnish troll.

I eat hot dogs, I mostly like hot dogs, I appreciate that for the average American hot dog stan what passes for a hot dog in the UK is probably a piece of shit compared to OMG best hot dog ever from x borough in NYC but if hot dogs don't make the cut I won't mourn their passing.

It's fair enough to take every food listed to be the ideal/best of its kind but if your experience has only ever been of the poor imitators then it's going to affect your view.

i didn't 'like' curry until i was 25 years old, because curry was a diarrheic substance dribbled on chips at fast food joints, or it was a microwaveable pack of the bits of a chicken that even chickens ignore when looking at other chickens.

nowadays- curry could walk this whole thing and i'd wave a banner on the finish line.

yeah I mean people can and will vote how they want - but if they say "bagels are lame they taste like dry bread" or "burritos are gross, the london burrito store just gave me a crepe with ketchup on it" then they are gonna get called out

Bagels, crab, soup, steak

The incredibly persuasive soup arguments from the previous bracket swayed me. Crab vs. berries though, utterly soul-crushing that they be pitted against each other.

Jaq, Thursday, 29 July 2010 15:02 (fifteen years ago)

Okay, even if I haven't eaten Real American Bagels, I can't imagine any bread product, no matter how tasty, being half as good as falafel. So falafel wins by default.

Tuomas, Thursday, 29 July 2010 15:09 (fifteen years ago)

I've had some pretty delicious bagels with stuff on, but none of them has made me think "whoa, this would not be anywhere near as perfect if it were any other kind of bread underneath" - mind you, since there are no other kinds of bread in the contest, maybe that's irrelevant, but

will be told "oh, you've never had the real thing - well, ok, you did have a couple while visiting the US, but you hadn't spent 25 years researching the best bagel joint within 300 miles first, so", while to do the same the other way across the Atlantic is just fine because those damn Euros can't cook until they emigrate

(not really cranky but it has been a hectic day at work so i may as well go and rant about food on the internets)

pretty much the only food i miss from the four years i spent on the East Coast is bagels - we have them in CA, but they are just not as amazing.

Three right answers here, but crab deserved better.

Fuck you, steak.

Most of my votes in round 2 went down in defeat, and ALL of the ones I cared most about. Humbuggery!

I'm gonna celebrate and have some soup, followed by berries adorning a festive dish of ICE CREAM

otmfm, and i'm as carnivore as the next guy. stupid slab of meat vs all the diverse richness of our oceans (until we've raped them into extinction).

No fish, no sushi, no crab. These are a pretty poor set of results.

State Attorney Foxhart Cubycheck (Billy Dods), Monday, 2 August 2010 08:27 (fifteen years ago)

voted against steak due to grief over voting down lamb and basically every other available red meat option. and a sense of having done my part by voting for sushi, shrimp, etc. but i was wrong and am now panged. this mostly as a result of heavy thinking on the subject of salmon that has gone down over the last few days. not just salmon, but salmon's as good a place to start as any. might take salmon over beef even if not other fish were involved in this contest. i.e., was so very very rong here. not that it matters. and steak is awesome earth killing obesity feeding murder crime food. so fuck it.

had some amazing-smelling (and tasting) salmon last night. I only eat steak as carne asada in tacos - but i understand a lot of people are quite fond of it.

nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn - Bernard (sarahel), Monday, 2 August 2010 16:52 (fifteen years ago)

The best steak I have eaten is better than the best fish but that is still the travesty of the round - I wonder if fish actually suffered from being too wide a category, so that people averaged it in their head with nasty kinds of "cod" etc - I imagine steak would have beaten 'meat' for instance?

Gravel Puzzleworth, Monday, 2 August 2010 16:57 (fifteen years ago)

i like how butthurt everybody's getting about bagels. i mean, i'm as american colombian as the next guy, and i've had some super-amazing bagels, but i could really do without them.
