This is the thread where you can extol the virtues of your diner.
Be as succinct or as long-winded as you like. This is a free space.
My diner is called Academy Restaurant, and it is Good with a capital G. I like the counter there, and all the food. The turkey club is second to none, the meatloaf sammich is a keeper and the soups are right on. They cook everything with Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
Love mah diner.

Armon's in Eagle Rock, Los Angeles, California. Run by these awesome Asian ladies. Old school wooden panelling everywhere. Booths or stools at the counter. One flatscreen TV the sole concession to modernity. Looks a little shitty from the outside which I think prevents it from becoming too hip, but always popular on weekends. All the classics done well. BUT...NOT OPEN AT NIGHT!!!! ='''(

:(
there are two diners up the street from my house. one is Alps East, which might be more of a "family restaurant" than a diner (ie it's not open for dinner), the other is the Lincoln Restaurant. The Lincoln is dingier but seems a little more popular and they have well-established comedy nights in their back room on Thursdays and Fridays. One time before I lived in this neighborhood, my band played a show around here and we ended up getting dinner at the Lincoln. I ordered a scramble/skillet of some kind, but both my bandmates ordered salad, then complained about how bad the salads were. You don't order salad at a dingy diner! Alps East is a little cleaner and the food is a little better and my wife is actually willing to eat there on occasion (like once a year) so it gets more of my business.

There was an awesome diner around the block from me when I lived in NYC. Really quiet and crumbling. I bet it isn't there anymore. It was on Seventh Ave and Christopher street behind the big library(?)/church(?)
Also I was once on the payphone (payphone!) to my GF outside of this diner when a guy came up to me and asked for money. I said sorry I'm on the phone and he threatened to "hogtie and buttfuck" me.

one of the surviving "coffee shops" or "greek diners" these places used to be as ubiquitous in manhattan as starbucks is now. I will stan for the New Wave's pancakes/waffles/french toast/omlettes. my son and I have brunch here every couple weeks or so. turkey sausages taste remarkably like kielbasa. lunch food is pretty meh, soup is disappointing though the complimentary cole slaw is good, not too mayo-drenched. dinner you're on your own. waitresses are classic new york combo of gruff and friendly at the same time.

I once ordered mousaka at a diner and when I got it I discovered they made it with potatoes (sliced into slabs) instead of eggplant. Ughh. I assume it was Greek-owned because why would they even have that on the menu if not? They closed a while after that, so maybe they were on their last legs at the time.

Glad this thread is here.
My local in Kensington, Brooklyn, is Faros--I'm around the corner. It's not great but I've grown to really like it as a spot. I tend to go there during off-hours (my schedule isn't very 9-5 anyway), after the lunch rush and never for breakfast. (The greasy-spoon aspect during Sunday a.m. turned my girlfriend off pretty definitively.) Always have the same thing, two cheesesteak sandwiches on rolls, no fries, and iced coffee. Sometimes I get the coconut cake and regret it, because I shouldn't eat sugar anyway but more because it's usually dry. "The usual?" they ask. Yes, the usual.
I've been staying with my girlfriend in Soho while her parents are gone for the summer and when I'm up for a late-night dinner I go to the Cozy Soup & Burger on Broadway and Astor Place. My diner default, there as at most places (but not Faros, for some reason), is a chicken club w/curly fries and iced tea. I've grown to really appreciate them just as a dining fact--chicken clubs and diners alike.

dead center of the neighborhood, great for people watching, open very late. super diner-y. sorta pricey but portions are absurd and it has a tome for a menu...lotsa stuff aimed at irish people including 'chef sauce' at every table.
we went last night actually, cause gf wanted pancakes for dinner - usually go for a very late dessert or on saturday mornings. food-wise it's decent...there's better diner food out there, but the atmosphere and people watching is A+.

can't find any pictures of my diner, but it's the most preciously generic and forgettable little hole-in-the-wall called MIDWEST DINER. there's potted plants by the windows, and the tables have old newspaper clippings about whatever under their glass tops, and the ceiling tiles are checkered with an occasional "clouds on blue sky" painted tile. owned by a greek family, so they have a gyro omelet which you would like if you're into the idea of gyro meat in your omelet. i get nothing but the midwest extra though, which is two pancakes, two eggs, and two bacon strips or sausage links for $3.99. comes with an orange wedge and a parsley spring, as you do. it is the perfect breakfast and i want it every sunday morning, though i only ever do maybe once a month.
― del griffith, Thursday, 12 August 2010 02:59 (fifteen years ago)
Well, the diner I most frequent is not a diner in much more than name. It's a restaurant that serves breakfast til 10pm (when they close) but they do not have a 'typical' diner menu in many regards. More soul food, fried chicken, bbq type stuff than salads/soups/deli sandwiches. This is Jimmy's Diner in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY. A few of my friends work there, so it's good to go and hang out. They give me free beer and free coffee and sometimes free milkshakes or pie. Also it is close.Favorites: mushroom swiss burger & fries, buffalo chicken sandwich, fried chicken & mashed potatoes, chicken fried streak.
My OLD diner was Tom's Diner in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. Since 1930-something.Great omelets, eggs, killer fresh pork sausages (none of this frozen links crap) as well as beef sausages. Homefries are a bit mediocre but their french fries are good. Amazing, wonderful, heartwarming service. Free cookies & orange slices.Favorite dishes: French toast with either strawberries or bananas & bacon; orange pancakes!!!!; two eggs over easy with french fries, pork sausage, wheat toast; fresh turkey & gravy when it's a special. Closed at 5 in the afternoon or thereabouts, so I'd have to go on Mondays (day off) or Fridays (work at 2pm). It was too busy on Saturdays and they weren't open Sundays, then. (They are now.) Used to go with my pals Keegan & Erin.

OH ALSO everyone needs to talk about the music you hear playing at your diners.
I should know this better than I do, it's a radio station that IDs itself every 10 mins, but for the life of me I can't remember which. Basically some lite-FM kind of thing, big pop hits but no rap + MOR-ish stuff. The song my diner's radio selection finally made me given in to: "Just Haven't Met You Yet."

the music at tom's is a few CDs they keep in rotation of like, old film scores and light classical and 'tasteful' muzak and stuff. at jimmy's it's a lot of punk & alex chilton, but depends on who's working the counter.

http://www.peterpanknj.com/menu.html
― shoggoths in hot weather (donna rouge), Thursday, 12 August 2010 05:39 (fifteen years ago)
The name Peterpank (the most frequently asked question about the diner) was derived from the partners last name, which was Petermann and Panko, all family. We preferred the name Peter Pan but that trade name was already in use, thus the addition of a K becoming Peterpank.

Ernie's: Love this place to death. Chester Gould thought Ernie's "chopped cow" hamburgers were great (his daughter lived here for a few years) and so one day he created a drawing for the wall and signed it. I think a lot of other cool people have stopped here over time. Had bfast w/ the Kn1tters here earlier this summer, in fact! It has a reputation, you know...J Doe complimented the pancakes. There's a very sweet, very charming waiter named Nathan who has worked here for as long as I've been going (five years?). I don't think I have any great anecdotes w/ him, but I'd be remiss if I neglected to mention him.I usually get the #11--two scrambled eggs, two big pancakes, bacon and hash browns. A lot of food, pretty cheap ($6 or $7, i think?). Kind of greasy, really fucking great!I eat here with my high school crush whenever he comes back to town. He's straight. But we both like bacon.

agh - when i lived in ft greene, academy was TERRIBLE. i went there once. never again. maybe it's gotten better?
tom's is totally unique and crazy but impossible to get a seat on the weekends.
the best in brooklyn for my money is mike's in clinton hill. they've got grits, the food is consistently good, the crowd is (was) very mixed and white-haired mike himself is (was) the maestro in charge. there aren't many tables but for some reason you never have to wait too long. one time i saw a detective i knew in there, picking up a sandwich to go.
mike's was never "my" diner though. that would have been silver spoon on flatbush ave. i would go there probably twice a week when i was unemployed/freelancing. the home fries were a little weird - carrots and celery added?! - but everything else was great, and the greek guy who ran it had a great moustache. i saw his son grow up from a little kid behind the counter to a big teenage bruiser.

ehh, it's worth queueing if the weather's nice cause it can be kinda social & sunny & you get coffee & snacks. BUT it's maybe much nicer to go when you can hang around for an hour and take your time, rather than eat and run as part of the table rush.

my parents used to live outside Reading PA - that whole area is like diner central. my dad liked a diner west of Allentown near I-78 & can't quite remember the name it was something cute like jack n jill. when i was a kid we would come out to Reading w/my grandparents and we always went to a PA dutch style diner called Fegeley's Family Restaurant. It closed in 2003 and they moved the diner car to another location w/vague plans to turn it into a museum.

No, I'm a regular. It's certainly not the best diner food...however the hash-browns are a nice touch for breakfast. And the burger is better then you'd expect. I usually go there for breakfast during the week if I get up early enough before getting on the train, or if I'm working from home. There's a pretty awesome crew of morning regulars that sit together at the counter, real old-school Queens characters. They also deliver, so when I'm feeling lazy AND decadent, I'll order the bacon cheeseburger deluxe for delivery. It comes with an onion ring. Sometimes it comes with a pickle and cole-slaw, sometimes it doesn't. (sad face)
When I first moved to the neighborhood I figured I'd try something authentic so I asked for the special which was an Irish Ham Sandwich or something. Don't know what I was expecting but I got two pieces of sourdough bread and a few thick slices of dry ham. I figured there'd be more to it and didn't know what kind of condiment is traditional or acceptable!
Not quite the neighborhood, but I tried the famous "Georgia Diner" on Queens Blvd and it was terrible. Also tried Pop Diner further down Queens Blvd and it was just ok.

Georgia Diner is near my office and I only went once because it was terrible. Why is it famous?

People on chowhound seem to wax nostalgic about it. It was packed when I went, we had walked there from woodside all the way down broadway through elmhurst chinatown and were really excited and the breakfast was gross.

we were on the q60 the other day and passed both of those being like 'yeah we should really try them' - having a cool exterior is pretty key

I think I did one brunch some time ago, I can't remember. Will again. Also want to try burgers at PJ Horgans which are supposed to be good. Got Shephard's Pie the time i went, to keep with the Irish theme. It's a cozy place.

Had to consult with my sister because I couldn't remember the names, but these are the Diners of my childhood:
The Clairidge Diner.
The Milburn Diner.
The Pilgram Diner.
The Eagle Rock Diner.
None of those were like 1930s traincar diners, but they're classic NJ greek diners.
Funny, just realized several of those are right near local movie theaters.
