I joined so I could watch "A Letter To Uncle Boonmee" for $1 but there is a lot of good stuff on here and I know people who have had offers to stream their work on MUBI. What do people think of sites like this as a means of exhibition/distribution?
I am not in any way affiliated with MUBI but I am interested in how people will be screening and watching movies in the coming futures.

Lots of people gave them shit for changing their name, but it certainly hasn't affected the quality of the website. Really well-designed, lots of valuable information. The Notebook is, quite easily, my favorite website for film news: David Hudson is wonderful at his job.
I worked on this and am really happy with the way the stream looks: http://mubi.com/programs/50

― johnny crunch, Friday, 13 August 2010 19:00 (fifteen years ago)
Watched an early Desplechin on it a few months back, but nothing since... in the UK, anyway, the list of films available seems a little limited?
― Stevie T, Friday, 13 August 2010 19:18 (fifteen years ago)
i can't find out how much subscriptions cost - is it worth it to have an unlimited subscription vs. paying per film?
― sarahel, Friday, 13 August 2010 19:29 (fifteen years ago)
heh, i subscribed to this a month ago and didn't watch a single film before my subscription timed out.
― plax (ico), Friday, 13 August 2010 19:31 (fifteen years ago)
haha, the reason i joined was a letter to uncle boonmee, i just didn't watch it.
― plax (ico), Friday, 13 August 2010 19:34 (fifteen years ago)
@sarahel if you click on 'Account' at the top right and then 'Subscription' it should tell you how much a subscription costs in your area.
In the UK a subscription is £12 per month and individual movies are £3 each or a one-off £12 for 5 films, so a subscription is worth it if you plan on watching 6 or more in a month.
― krakow, Friday, 13 August 2010 19:52 (fifteen years ago)
looks like the sub is just 9 pounds now, so it becomes worth it if you watch 4 or more a month
the good - beautiful interface; lots of obscure flicks; lots of short films; don't have to subscribe; movies start instantly
the bad - only about 400 films so far, yet their database makes it seem like there's more (for instance, they're doing a promo about agnes varda at the moment, using a still from a movie that's not actually available to see)
- you need to choose "WATCH" to limit our searches to only things that are available
anyway, anybody got any good recs? i haven't heard of most of these movies

Yeah, I only have the 30 time-limited ones on my app, too (LG smart TV)--not yet got the library included.

Not as far as I can tell. I don't really understand the platform or the interface TBH.
― Tim, Friday, 14 August 2020 08:46 (five years ago)
I understand the platform just not how you access the library.
― xyzzzz__, Friday, 14 August 2020 09:01 (five years ago)
In our case, on the Apple TV, we access the library through the pull-down menu at the top of the screen. Where you'd normally find info and subtitles and stuff.

do you get the full mubi offering (including library) via amazon prime video?
― ||||||||, Sunday, 23 August 2020 10:30 (five years ago)
looks like you maybe do?
amazon prime is £8 pcm and has a bunch of other benefits, mubi is £10 pcm... what am I missing, beyond amazon being xunts of course
― ||||||||, Sunday, 23 August 2020 10:34 (five years ago)
i thought Prime just allowed you to buy a Mubi subscription as an add-on?
― A Short Film About Scampoes (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 23 August 2020 10:42 (five years ago)
yeah i mean they are comically, deliberately, crookedly terrible at telling you what you get for your money but £8 pcm gets your basic Prime Video i think which is basically shit for movies, and then you'd have to pay for a Mubi subscription which you can watch "thru" Prime for some reason
― A Short Film About Scampoes (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 23 August 2020 10:57 (five years ago)
That's how I understand it too.
So you can get Mubi for £7.99 per month via Amazon (rather than £9.99 directly), but you have to have Amazon Prime to do so, which is £7.99 a month itself.
I don't know if the full library is available if you go via Amazon.
― brain (krakow), Sunday, 23 August 2020 11:04 (five years ago)
ahhhh... thanks. was quite unclear from my cursory 15 minutes of googling
― ||||||||, Sunday, 23 August 2020 11:36 (five years ago)
The advantage of having something else other than Mubi is the search function, as far as we can tell. The Mubi interface (on our TV, anyway, I don't know about the web interface) has no search. We have to use the Apple TV's own search to search rather than browse.
― trishyb, Sunday, 23 August 2020 13:57 (five years ago)
I get mubi through my scribd subscription, which is $5/month.
― wasdnous (abanana), Sunday, 23 August 2020 18:38 (five years ago)
Wow - that does seem like a great loophole, though Scribd seems to cost new subscribers $10 a month. Is Scribd itself good?
― Alba, Sunday, 23 August 2020 19:24 (five years ago)
I mainly use it for audiobooks. Be warned that it's not actually unlimited -- if I listen to around 3 audiobooks within a month, they lock me out of most audiobooks for the rest of the month.
I threatened to cancel once and they reduced my price permanently.
― wasdnous (abanana), Sunday, 23 August 2020 19:50 (five years ago)
Ah - that's something Mubi too, with some ridiculous "OK, we blinked first" message when you hit cancel.
― Alba, Sunday, 23 August 2020 19:57 (five years ago)
The Library seems like a larger selection, rather than the full set of films being available (that would probably be suicide lol).

Apparently I’m in that phase where I like to write about the things I’m watching, so let’s go with it.Swimming Pool (Ozon) is on at the moment and I watched it again today. I’ve seen it a couple of times already but not for at least 12 years and it’s still a really good watch. People always complain that it’s slow but I have never found it so. Sarah’s first solitary days in the house and wandering around the village struck a real chord with me - I have always been happy being alone and the sense of time and space stretching away from you like that is so freeing. This contrasts of course with how Sarah actually lives her life - Diet Coke and sweetener-enhanced yoghurt, clothes that disguise her entirely, disciplined waking times. Into all this, of course, crashes Julie. I saw some thread on twitter a while back asking for opinions on “which actor had ever looked the best in a film” and Ludivine Sagnier in this would be up there for me - she’s luminous. Her Julie tosses her unbrushed hair over her shoulders, eats paté and cheese, smokes and drinks and brings men home. Sarah watches, first with anger at the intrusion and then with envy.If you’ve seen this before then you know how it plays out. I thought, watching it again today, thatthe story that unfolds at the publisher’s house is not just the book that it becomes but the process of writing the book itself. Julie is changeable, and the several scene where a male character is standing gazing down at one of the women reminded me of writing and rewriting a piece to make it right. There are odd turns that don’t quite fit - when you have a scene or an idea that won’t leave you and must put it down immediately with a view to making it fit within the whole. Like when Sarah asks Julie why she did something and she replies “I don’t know,” - it’s Sarah the writer making her character do something because it struck her just so and needing to rationalise it afterwards. Whether any of it happened is not really the point because it’s about what it says it is at the beginning - a writer trying to do something different. Sarah changes because she’s written a book that is a complete inversion from her usual formula and she blossoms as a result. You really do love to see it.Or so I thought anyway.

noticed that many of the 30-day films eventually transition into the library section but presumably not all. so it can be a bit hit or miss on whether you absolutely /need/ to watch a film when it's on the now showing feed. would be good if they could add a little marker to show those films which will be added to the library after 30 days

What gives?

― calzino, Friday, 19 February 2021 14:02 (four years ago)
mubi recently changed how it works, before it was 30 films, one gets removed and another added each day, to them having a library section, which seems to be stuff that is available permanently (or as permanently as anything on a streaming service is) and then the 'film of the day' section which has the 30 films like before (some of which go into the library, some don't)
i would highly recommend 'about some meaningless events' which was added to their library recently and is a genuine 10/10 stone cold masterpiece

I just watched Swimming Pool, reviewed upthread.
Really impressed by Charlotte Rampling's performance as an uptight English person. She really captures the atmosphere and mannerisms of being an uptight rigid person, whilst hating yourself for being so, and the increasing envy of people who are freeing and obviously enjoying themselves more. The general atmosphere of heat and time slowing down in the country were also captured really well and seem very exotic from my current viewpoint.
Have resolved to make more of MUBI. Any more recommendations welcome...

― Luna Schlosser, Friday, 1 April 2022 13:42 (three years ago)
In the US it seems to be an English-only version. She seems to be doing her on dialogue, it is not dubbed, but still.

I saw this last night. It's an interesting neonoir, but I continue to wish that most 2+-hour movies be taken out of their directors' hands and be edited down to 90 minutes. And I remain unconvinced that Mubi US is worth the subscription.

― (We're Not) The Experimental Jet Set (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 2 November 2022 16:33 (two years ago)
This week’s offering, Holy Spider, is not for everyone. At first blush it may seem like a grisly true crime fictionalization masquerading as social commentary, but after pondering it for a few days maybe I liked it after all and maybe it did add to that small body of films that take place in Iran but are made outside of Iran by expats and can show things that cannot be filmed in country.
― (We're Not) The Experimental Jet Set (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 2 November 2022 16:36 (two years ago)
Is that the one where the actress, upon winning at Cannes, delivered a 17-minute speech?

Dunno but I will agree that it's quite a good film that lingers in the memory; caught a screening at the local Alamo the other week.

Le Bao's Taste is very strange. It has arresting images but is inscrutable. There is almost no dialogue or explanation of events. It is a step further removed from Pedro Costa in that it shows an oppressed environment but it doesn't offer any context

837 likesmubiusa Today is your last chance to see IRREVERSIBLE - STRAIGHT CUT (Gaspar Noé, 2023) in theaters, free with MUBI GO at the link in our bio.Sorry, mubiusa and MUBI GO, think I will pass on this, although the video of Monica B dancing in the shiny gold dress is nice.

yeah zero desire to ever watch that movie again
― Tracer Hand, Sunday, 19 February 2023 23:40 (two years ago)
it's fucking wretched. Whatever's Noe's parents spent on the private Catholic school he went to didn't help whatsoever in his development.
― calzino, Sunday, 19 February 2023 23:46 (two years ago)
i'm okay skipping it based on what i know of it and the last three posts help reinforce that impulse.I would like to see Pacifiction but it's a busy week and THREE HOURS dude c'mon

Robinson in Space is sort of glumly magical ... and REAL. great stuff
― calzino, Saturday, 3 June 2023 21:38 (two years ago)
I keep watching this trio of Patrick Keiller docs: Robinson in Ruins/in Space and London (Ruins narrated by Vanessa Redgrave). I still have little idea who Robinson was, but I like him a lot.
― calzino, Monday, 19 June 2023 19:13 (two years ago)
he was imprisoned for some reason I didn't pick up on in the docs and he believed he could look into the future by looking hard at the "molecular basis of historical events" in the locations they occurred or something like that. He was obv a fantastic bloke!
― calzino, Monday, 19 June 2023 19:29 (two years ago)
Those films are so great. Not sure I've ever actually seen Robinson in Space, having said that. The novel by Chris Petit is really good too.

Once Upon a Time in Anatolia is wonderful. Nuri Bilge Ceylan is one of today’s top 10 directors
― beamish13, Saturday, 1 July 2023 21:34 (two years ago)
Azor was my favorite 2021 movie. Even thinking about it now is giving me a bit of the creeps.

yes there are parts of that movie that evoke a rare sense of dread, it's top notch

Beloved by Latin American audiences—and renowned auteurs such as Alfonso Cuarón and Guillermo del Toro—the Golden Age of Mexican cinema is filled with treasures beyond a cinephile’s wildest dreams. Ushering in a monumentally prolific era of master filmmakers and unforgettable screen stars, these exquisite tales ingeniously reimagine the visual aesthetics of classical Hollywood through the distinctive lens of local culture and history. Pressing issues such as wealth inequality and gender roles are among their primary concerns, yet many of the most notable films from this period also have a penchant for the surreal, the fantastical, and the pleasurably strange. Immortalized on screen are not only political revolutionaries but also luchadores, witches, superheroes, and more. Here, fiery passions can lead to more than a clandestine love affair; they can result in murder or villainous plans for world domination! With melodrama as the key mode of expression, the mirror of everyday realism is shattered, revealing the volatile depths of human desire. Curated in partnership with the Locarno Festival, this selection delivers a taste of their exceptional retrospective of Mexican film production, which includes never-before-seen works. Erasing the simplistic binary between so-called highbrow and lowbrow entertainment, these rediscovered gems, which span three decades, showcase the potency of popular cinema as a vessel for both social commentary and genre delights.

― The Original Human Breadbox (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 10 August 2023 23:30 (two years ago)
it's sort of like The Third Man in its plot structure, but no snappy dialogue or safe characters and more like a mundane nightmare where you you sense there is a murky undercurrent of bad shit happening way scarier than the obvious ordinary everyday evil you see glimpses of and try to normalise.
― vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Thursday, 10 August 2023 23:30 (two years ago)
OTM. It's more than tyres and petrol, Old Man.
― The Original Human Breadbox (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 10 August 2023 23:58 (two years ago)
Indeed to all the above -- a remarkable and unsettling film.
Watched four of those five (so far) Mexican showcase films I posted about earlier -- all great in their own ways!

"Your father was right - fear makes you mediocre" is up there with coldest putdowns in the history of cinema

Is it just me or is MUBI not updating with a new movie everyday anymore?
― Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Monday, 18 September 2023 19:21 (one year ago)
yes, they sent a circular to me via email a couple weeks ago suggesting there wouldn't be a daily movie anymore. not sure if that's impacted the number of overall films added, I've not really been super active on it recently
― yo la dieng-o (fionnland), Monday, 18 September 2023 19:56 (one year ago)
just came to ask about that. I really preferred the old structure - gave you a reason to check in every day plus provided some impetus to watch things which were due to drop off (and presumably helped them license some films - on a short term basis - they may otherwise struggle to.)

― The Ginger Bakersfield Sound (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 13 February 2024 12:47 (one year ago)
i really enjoyed Topology of Sirens - kind of Reichardt-y (very similar color palette and pace to Showing Up, but without the emotional core or character development), lots of experimental music (Sarah Davachi and Matchess act and perform in the movie), sometimes has the vibes of those videos where people play their expensive synthesizers in a very curated room with lots of plants, but it's also a mystery.
― na (NA), Thursday, 29 February 2024 16:42 (one year ago)
some of that reads like a backhanded compliment but it really was a pleasant way to spend an hour and a half - it looks really nice and has good music and sounds

I quite loved it (and hated it simultaneously)
― Rich E. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 7 May 2024 16:45 (one year ago)
Because it never got even a cursory release here, I'm going to count it as a 2024 film (the NYT didn't review it until March).

The final extended sequence is ok - but overall this film really tested the limits of my patience, and I could never sit through it again.

I just came back from seeing it. Blimey. It was so fun to overhear people chatting ad they came out the cinema, it was like they'd been on a rollercoaster rather than seeing a film. Should it have its own thread?

― Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Sunday, 22 September 2024 04:00 (eleven months ago)
I hated The Substance. as subtle as a hammer to the jaw— i don’t appreciate films that drive their “lessons” home and treat the audience like a bunch of middle schoolers. awful film.I watched Gasoline Rainbow last night, and it was incredible— a lovely filmabout growing up, friendship, and being different.

'Moving' by Shinji Sōmai is a must-see, if it's on your local MUBI site. Saw it yesterday, amazing mix of children's story about parents getting divorced, and something much darker and more mysterious. With a camera that seems much inspired by Mizoguchi, but much more playful and warm. The last sequence during the credits is especially unique.
