toss up really. but i prefer the cold, and a nice stove.

chrisv2010, Thursday, 19 August 2010 14:00 (fifteen years ago)

Def. extreme summer. Even if I don't have a/c in my house, I can just lay around in shorts and drink beer or iced tea to cool off. Extreme cold is just miserable.

a mix of music (Lionel Ritchie) and kicks (my tongue) (Phil D.), Thursday, 19 August 2010 14:01 (fifteen years ago)

winter - if only because of the humid and sweat of extreme summer: it's repulsive.

Zeno, Thursday, 19 August 2010 14:05 (fifteen years ago)

Winter. I can always put more clothes on, make tea, and get up and do something active for warmth. Whereas in summer I just want to vomit and sweat in silence, sometime after my brain stops processing things other than how suffocatingly humid it is.

Jesus doesn't want me for a thundercloud (Laurel), Thursday, 19 August 2010 14:07 (fifteen years ago)

extreme summer is far more preferable. it's kind of nice to sit around and sweat sometimes. extreme cold is just miserable and it makes everything else miserable - going outside, driving to work, waking up in the morning to a freezing cold house. etc. etc. the only thing bad about my 85F degree house is that my produce goes bad a bit quicker.

homosexual II, Thursday, 19 August 2010 14:08 (fifteen years ago)

Extreme winter cold any day. Because basically any kind of cold is just an excuse to put on more clothes. I'd be perfectly happy sitting around in tights, jeans, 2 pairs of socks, t-shirt, regular shirt, 2 jumpers, a cardigan, a parka and a wooly hat and my laptop on my lap to generate heat.

But in summer and when the heat comes, I just melt and lie there flopping about, so unhappy. It's not like I can flay myself and walk about without skin.

Karen D. Tregaskin, Thursday, 19 August 2010 14:09 (fifteen years ago)

i like the cold!

Eggs, Peaches, Hot Dogs, Lamb (remy bean), Thursday, 19 August 2010 14:11 (fifteen years ago)

Neither really is that horrible, it always passes. I DO get annoyed when extreme cold or heat goes on for days on end but there are worse things in life. Extreme cold = iced over streets = unsafe driving. Heat doesn't always work well enough. Extreme heat day after day is kind of bad for old people who don't have air conditioning.

extreme cold. the heat makes me irritable. cold weather doesn't affect my mood; it just means i'm looking for ways to warm up.

I find that when it's extremely cold -- like, 20 below and shit -- it's usually sunny. But it's not like you're going outside, anyway.

People seem to forget how awful extreme heat can be. At a festival a couple of years ago, literally EVERYBODY was complaining, immobile, feeling sick, burnt, unable to enjoy themselves properly because of the heat. And then after a couple of months pass, those same people were talking about how 'nice' the weather was. WTF?

Cold all the way.

emil.y, Thursday, 19 August 2010 14:52 (fifteen years ago)

I grew up in NOLA and a lot of my friends made the joke that I was a reptile b/c of how much I love to soak in the heat. Heat means passion and life. If you have sex without breakin' a sweat then you're doin it wrong so anyone who complains about sweating can live in their chaste little untouched pheremoneless bubbles up in the bitter north. In the extreme heat of the summer you can almost see the grass growing in real time. When you get extreme heat for weeks at a time everything in the world just slows down. Ever had a margarita in the winter?

Having voted summer, I've recalled how uncomfortable I've often felt when visiting the tropics... Give me the hottest day English summer over the coldest day of English winter any fucking day though.

the question is rather you'd rather die by scorpion bite or being mauled by a polar bear.

diurnal eternal falafel (get bent), Thursday, 19 August 2010 14:57 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, being overly hot is just the biggest passion killer there is. Why would anyone want to have sex when it's too hot to move?

Whereas, being cold = "would you like to come under this slumberdown with me, hrrrmmmmmm?"

Karen D. Tregaskin, Thursday, 19 August 2010 14:57 (fifteen years ago)

"Give me the hottest day English summer"

how extreme could that be?

Zeno, Thursday, 19 August 2010 14:58 (fifteen years ago)

but it says "extreme winter cold" - that's necessarily "days that don't get above zero." I can wash my sweaty clothes but I can't get back the shoes that snow & salt destroyed. and summer nights are awesome, even at the highest peak of summer there's a little relief early in the morning - whereas winter is just fucking relentless

man I will never live anyplace with a real winter again, got the fuck outta that nonsense imo

and man you fellow horndogs who don't like gettin it on when it's incredibly hot...man I don't get that at all, either, the whole air during a real brutal summer already feels like a room in which you're goin at it, it's trying to put the idea in your head

I miss snow, proper snow SOOO SOS OSOSOSOSOSOSOSOOOOOOOOOO much. Like, 3 foot of snow dumped in the drive, school called off, get your boots on swisssshhhh swisssssshhh snowsuit sound OH GOD I MISS SNOW. Proper winter just sucks for people who are ill prepared. Like, WTF are you doing wearing shoes in snow and salt? Get your boots on and a decent coat.

English winter is just a bit pissy. But the lack of an English summer more than compensates for it. It is August, I am walking around in a fleece. It's GR8.

Karen D. Tregaskin, Thursday, 19 August 2010 15:02 (fifteen years ago)

and summer nights are awesome, even at the highest peak of summer there's a little relief early in the morning - whereas winter is just fucking relentless

^^^bam

height of summer is wearing few clothes and being mobile and walking vast distances and being chilled-out and forgetting about one's woes and drinking refrigerated juice - height of winter is snuggling IF YOU'RE LUCKY and then apart from that it's indoors, catching colds and generally not enjoying the world

Yeah but it also says "extreme heat" which here means 90 + degree weather and unbearable humidity. Weather like that just makes me want to die. I have a hard time functioning. I'm really sensitive to heat/humidity. I like warm weather but not hot. 70-75 is perfect summer weather imo.

anyone who is not down with the cocoon of winter w/requisite snow storms and the "well no point in going outside gonna just hang here with hot coffee and a blanket and a book and a record on" feeling is so bizarre to me. It's like the definition of the word cozy. whereas escaping summer heat by getting into air conditioning is just hours of sadly looking out the window at welcoming sunshine and knowing that it is also trying to kill you.

Cold, damp, etc are just things that I guess I'm programmed to endure. They're not strictly speaking COMFORTABLE, but they're...temporary. A hot bath and a hot drink and a little rest and you'll be perfectly fine. And once you do that for enough years of life, you start to actually ENJOY the coldness and dampness just because it promises the pleasures and comforts of getting warm again. It's nice that there are discomforts in life that are so easily solved, unlike loss or grief or regret, et al.

Heat is GREAT. Heat is an excuse for SWIMMING and getting a TAN and being drunk in the middle of the day because you're happy not sad. Even music sounds better in extreme heat - you can drive around with the windows down and the stereo up and sweat makes some people look kinda good. Extreme cold (like, Chicago/Canada cold) is just so debilitating.

I mean basically I think we can all agree that for like 90% of the world's populating, the perfect temperature is somewhere between 60 - 80 Fahrenheit, but if you are talking about -25F vs 115F, I am going to rep fro -25F every single time

We were in Vegas during a heat wave (approx 117F by 10 AM) and it was too hot to GO TO THE POOL, like I actually had the sensation of my skin cooking within 5 seconds of coming up out of the water. THAT IS NOT AWESOME, IT IS TERRIFYING AND UNCOMFORTABLE. At least extreme cold is not going to fool me into exposing large swathes of my skin to it!

I'm not knocking tropical places, that is why they are nice to visit in winter. I just get sick and tired of Americans who move somewhere that is warm year round because "they can't take the cold". How is the US supposed to be superpower of the world with that kind of weak attitude. I understand some people's jobs make them move there. Some of the most astonishing places on earth (Siberia, Canada, Alaska, the Nordic countries) are very, very cold. No you can't go sit on a beach there. However I once wanted to go to a desert place for vacation and was reminded that I was wasting water if I wanted a place with a pool, that the Indians needed it...some very hot places are not all that beachy.

I got one word for all you cold-reppers: SAUNA. the vast majority of people who actually deal with extreme cold on a regular basis spend more time in saunas than they do outside (aside from obligatory snow shoveling).
The coldest AC I ever experienced in living in a subtropical climate for 25 years was maybe 60F. and that was in the freezer section of the grocery store.

IMO as a carless person extremem summer is way easier. Nothing worse than walking around on ice & slush, your feet cold & wet no matter what boots & socks & c you wear, having to wear nylons under your pants, your snot freezing in your nose, etc. Where as the worst part of extreme summer is risking homeless tan (sunscreen) and dehydration (water bottle). You cool down way quicker coming in from the heat than you warm up coming in from the cold.

And if I had a car, even less of a contest: I always hated shoveling show out from around my car, scraping its windows & windshields, etc...adds another cold & shitty 15 minutes to the morning routine. Plus driving on ice is horrible. I guess this is all to say I don't miss living in Idaho.

extreme summer is way way way better. It's so hard to sleep when it's cold and all my skin starts falling off. It also hurts to breathe when it is extremely cold. I'd much rather sweat than have to spend a million years putting on clothes before walking out the door, then take them off again when I get some place, then put them all back on. Ugh. Has anyone's limbs fallen off from it being hot outside? No.

My "extreme winter" experiences took place in upstate NY with full lake effect.

I would still rather than than 100 degree+ weather with 90% humidity and electrical storms but still no rain.

Karen D. Tregaskin, Thursday, 19 August 2010 17:41 (fifteen years ago)

the second the weather gets cold I literally become suicidal.

Is this because of the cold, though, or the fact that winter days are shorter and thus darker? SAD is a fairly common winter affliction, I will admit, and I can understand those who suffer from it being perplexed by us cold-lovers.

emil.y, Thursday, 19 August 2010 17:42 (fifteen years ago)

we've more or less had both of these in the past year, coldest winter in 30 years and warmest summer since the 18th century. ridiculous. though however annoying a hot summer can be it's nothing compared to a really cold winter when you can't move or drive or take the train

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 19 August 2010 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

Ha! I spent a couple years at a school in the Finger Lakes region. Lake effect snow is no BS that's for sure.

Not everyone who hates extreme heat hates the water. On at 90 degree day there's no where I'd rather be than in the ocean. Swimming is the best.

It's so hard to sleep when it's cold and all my skin starts falling off.

That is so weird to me. I can't sleep when it's too hot. In the winter I turn off the heat and open the windows in my bedroom. Of course, I use a giant featherbed then but I like the room bordering on freezing.

Yeah, there is nothing better than getting under sacks of goosedown when it's really cold and nothing sticking out but the tips of your lips. (Yes, I know, bad vegetarian, but feathers are where it's at when it's cold and damp.) Being in bed snuggly and all wrapped up is one of the best experiences of winter. I'd hibernate if I could, but that doesn't mean I don't like winter, it means I love it, because I love sleeping. And winter offers lots of chances for it.

Sleeping when it's hot and the sun comes up at 4am is just inhuman.

peacocks, Thursday, 19 August 2010 18:04 (fifteen years ago)

I want to sleep in extreme heat, I really do. But the problem is that I feel like I'm dying, mostly by suffocation, so I can only sleep about 3 hours at a time and then wake up gasping. I've tried fans, I've tried sleeping under towels wringing with cold water, I've tried drinking ice water endlessly, and at some point it just doesn't matter.

Back when I lived in a shitty shoebox in Jersey City, there was one summer where it was over 90 degrees in our apt for 4-5 days. I managed to cadge invitations to crash w other people most of that time, but one or two nights I did stay home and OOOF. When you're standing under your own shower with the water turned ALL THE WAY to just-out-of-the-ground-groundwater-cold and every part of yr body that's outside the direct shower spray is RADIATING heat like you're standing in an oven, and you know that eventually you have to turn the water off....

Heat all the way. Just look at the cultures of hot countries vs. cold countries and the answer is obvious.

Extreme cold is simply further away from our body temperature and a comfortable room temperature than extreme heat is. All time worldwide cold record is -129 and all time heat record is 134. So that extreme cold would be 204 degrees away from a comfortable 75, while the extreme heat would only be 59 degrees away. The extreme records in the U.S. are -80 and 134 so still, the worst extreme cold in Alaska is theoretically more uncomfortable than the worst extreme heat in Death Valley.

Do you know how much grass and sand would STICK TO ME with the amount of sweat pouring off my body? The only and I mean ONLY way that heat is tolerable is IF there's a large body of at least medium-cool water right next to it. And I mean RIGHT NEXT TO IT, like I better be able to walk over there and jump in. Under no other circumstance is there a single appealing thing about extreme heat, and maybe not even then (unless the water is REALLY cold), and in a lot of places in the world where extreme heat occurs, bodies of water are largely unavailable and/or not considered a responsible use of limited resources.

You know why they're limited? BECAUSE HUMANS WEREN'T MEANT TO VACATION ON THE SURFACE OF VENUS, GET YOUR ASS BACK TO EARTH IF YOU WANT TO LIVE.

I want to say extreme winter - but I've never really experienced it long term. We're talking the equivalent of a Phoenix/Dallas summer, right? 10 degrees F and snow?

and summer nights are awesome, even at the highest peak of summer there's a little relief early in the morning

For the duration of Texas summers, it's miserably hot and humid through the night, and the 'early morning relief' is that it's only 90 when you wake up instead of 105. It's actually straight up dangerous to do anything outdoors for about six hours in the middle of the day. This is not good.

Been watching this thread for a while trying to think of how to vote, but I hate them both too much to reach a conclusion.

Wd take ten slightly cold winters over one slightly hot summer, cz I am one of those fatteys and I sweat and burn easily and my brain just shuts down completely when the temperature hits even the high 20s. So my first thought was that winter was better, but I also have terrible circulation and it's pretty miserable when you're wearing about as many layers as you physically can and you're still too cold to feel your limbs or to sleep and the cold seems to go right through yr bones.

Want to live on a planet where it never gets above 26 or below -5 (which itself is reserved for v rare occasions and must always snow just long enough to be pretty and then melt before it gets slushy/icy and dangerous) and never gets dark before 8pm.

The existence of saunas and hot tubs seems to prove that heat is more tolerable and even enjoyable than cold. I know that some spas have cold pools as well, but those seem to be used to jump back and forth between hot and cold. I don't think anyone goes to the spa and just hangs out in 30 degree water all day. People who live near the equator don't have walk in freezers in their houses where they just chill out in a towel.

The point I meant to make was that people living in extreme cold often take shelter in MUCH more extreme heat than found in nature, whereas people living in extreme heat need only a minor temperature adjustment and have no interest in actually experiencing cold weather as a remedy.

I hate the cold, but I can always put on a sweater or add layers. In the summer, I can never get cool; even with the A/C going I'm a sweaty, tired mess. But the quandary is that despite extreme heat and humidity in the summer, it's uncomfortable but still tolerable, even if just for a short bit on the way to the pool. But in the winter, the snot-freezing cold is so unpleasant I just stay in.

What's really odd - and I've been reminded of this by my own small kids - is that I don't remember a single day when I was little that was either too hot or too cold to go outside in. But now there are all sorts of days where the kids want to go out in both extremes and I'm, like, nooooooooooo!

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 19 August 2010 20:21 (fifteen years ago)

Echoing what others have said, and what my dad used to say that used to piss off a younger, thinner, and colder me: In winter you can always put on more layers, but in the summer, you can only take off so many layers and it stops helping.

The body's heating system works a lot better than its cooling system.

using your same logic we are also much closer to freezing than the boiling point so i say that cold wins

Except that natural outdoor temperatures (not in a sauna) never reach the boiling point of water, while people regularly have to experience freezing temperatures. And since we're mostly made up of water, we should strive to reach a nice middle point between freezing and boiling -- a comfy 122.

if you want to go there, our body heat would classify as extreme heat to a lot of the people on this thread.

also winter clothes are much cooler looking than summer clothes

also that feeling you get when it's really dry and cold outside and you breathe in through your nose and your nasal membranes hurt because of the ozone and the cold, that's classic

I've lived in an unheated apartment where the pipes froze under the kitchen sink in the course of one afternoon. I'm not comparing "being hot in the summer" to "being warm indoors in the winter" -- I'm saying I'd rather have a constant chill than a constant sweat.

It's the warming-up process that I crave: you're actually cold but you just pulled up the comforter so in about 10 minutes you'll return to "sleepable" temps.

At 15°C (59°F apparently) it is a little colder than I would generally like to sit in a 3/4-sleeve shirt with the windows open, but I'm not going to shut the window because this is the world's stuffiest office and I need some oxygen, and I'm not going to put my thin summer fleece on because I can't bear to admit I'm feeling the cold before the officemate I once saw sit in a full winter jacket and scarf when it was like 25° out. funky brewster (San Te), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 13:32 (fifteen years ago)

I get cold slightly easily (bad circulation) and dislike it. I get hot very easily and hate it. So, a standard "hot vs cold" is easy to answer, but "extreme hot vs extreme cold" is more confusing, because I probably can't deal with either at all well.

Though, I've been outside in -25ish (unknown in southern England) and didn't really feel any worse to being outside at -2 (rare during daytime but happens once every few years): both OK when wrapped up well but not fun for extended periods.

Whereas even 30 (once unusual in the UK, now a yearly occurrence) makes me exhausted and cranky and get sunburnt to a lobster shade. 35ish made me feel nauseous all day. Can't even imagine 40+, don't think I could cope at all. And if "extreme" means anything at all, 40 is probably less extreme than -25, across the populated areas of the world. (Open to debate on this, though, as this is based on 0 research)

vampire headphase (a passing spacecadet), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 13:39 (fifteen years ago)

40 is probably less extreme than -25

Well, the saying about it not being the heat but instead the humidity -- it's not a matter of opinion. The awful thing that humidity does is that it prevents the sweat on your skin from evaporating, which is how your body tries to cool itself. Low humidity, you can naturally cool yourself just fine. High humidity, more of an uphill climb for your body's natural cooling mechanisms. This is not to say that people can't adapt to widely varying climates over time. But in general, hot and humid is more dangerous than hot and dry.

There's no such thing as "cold and humid," fortunately.

kenan, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 13:46 (fifteen years ago)

You know, I didn't mind the heat NEARLY as much while we were in Michigan, and it was just as hot as NY, and in fact MORE humid because of all the grass & soil that would hold moisture & dew and then release it during the day. It's NICE to be hot when a) you don't have to concentrate on work, b) you can run a cold hose over your feet anytime you want, and c) even the hot air smells fresh and clean.

In general I find that heat is conducive to leisure, and cold to industry. Maybe that's part of this, too?

Jesus doesn't want me for a thundercloud (Laurel), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 13:55 (fifteen years ago)

That's interesting, actually. I have a friend who theorizes that Chicago may be the "City the works" because there's so much of the year that there's nothing to do but work. The work she was referring to was writing, but even then cold weather probably works double time.

I love the 5 minutes or so after I come in from the cold. What's sort of annoying is that that feeling soon turns into being hot, especially in winter when I board a bus or train or go into a store w/ my jacket on. I've learned to strip my outerwear off before I sit down on the bus or train b/c otherwise I'll get boxed in be unable to free myself from my parka, in which it feels like deepest August.

I guess for me it depends on how much I'm moving around. Just walking to the train can still leave me pleasantly cool enough inside that I can survive a train ride with all my gear on. Yeh, in the time I lived in NC it never got down to 0º or under. I think the coldest it got was 10º.

Unbelievably, many schools did not have A/C at that time (1990s), so in late May and early August we got school closing due to extreme heat. And in winter they closed due to the mere rumor of a possibility of snow. (This almost fucked up my graduation b/c we wound up under the state-mandated days in school.)

xp Laurel: Yes, I forgot about the nausea. Fortunately, my winter coat has zippered vents under the arms so I can cool down after my walk to the train, but it's not enough to make the actual ride comfortable.

next person tries to teach me about JOY IN LIFE gets a tubgirl in return (Jesse), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 14:50 (fifteen years ago)

xp to myself: In which case I take off my coat. When are you ever so boxed in that you can't stand up, be polite, and wriggle your coat off? Give someone else your seat while you do it, makes you look like not at all a dick.

So what I really need is a living room where I can attach a hose to the sink, spray everything down when it gets dusty or sticky, and let the water run off into a floor drain.

WANT. NOW.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 14:58 (fifteen years ago)

See, I kind of don't. I mean it's great in theory, but there's something about a room... I can't say what I mean exactly. Maybe that if I don't spend time thoroughly cleaning it myself, it's not really mine. I don't want a disposable room.

kenan, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 15:01 (fifteen years ago)

I want a DIFFICULT room filled with upholstery and rugs and things that have to be dusted and vacuumed...

kenan, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 15:03 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not content with dusting, a great deal of the time (esp because we smoke inside and everything gets so ashy when you're not super careful). I feel the only way to make something TRULY CLEAN has to involve water and/or washing. Dry methods of cleaning don't convince me.

Jesus doesn't want me for a thundercloud (Laurel), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 15:11 (fifteen years ago)

kenan, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 15:15 (fifteen years ago)

Maybe that if I don't spend time thoroughly cleaning it myself, it's not really mine.

Over the years I've been working on the mind-over-matter approach to dealing with the cold. It's worse if you think about how cold it is, if you brace yourself and constrict against it. For short periods I'm able to convince myself it's no big whup, I'm just an impassive receiver of sensory messages coming in informing me of the ambient temperature etc. Shit generally works long enough to make it to my car and the heat to kick in.

Cold takes a long time to affect the way *I* feel, as opposed to the way my extremities feel. My hands, feet, skin of my butt and legs can be cold to the touch, but I'm well insulated and the coldness doesn't get to my torso and make me shiver and be miserable.

Heat, otoh, hits me right in the gut right from the beginning and makes me want to trade 3 years of my life to stop sweating.

I really just think you have to be born to one or the other. The bf has a crazy metabolism, faster breathing and heartbeat than I do, radiates heat like it's his JOB, and will claim to be freezing to death when I'm wearing a T-shirt inside.

The heat is centrally controlled for the whole building, ledge, in many cases. If that's so, you won't have your own thermostat to turn down when you leave or go to bed -- the heat is just constant.

maybe more energy-efficient to do it that way than to give individual tenants their own thermostats?

unemployed aerosmith fans I have shoved (bernard snowy), Thursday, 9 December 2010 14:42 (fifteen years ago)

arguable. you'd think a few people would have enough of an eye on the gas bill to have their heating off when they're out at work.

e.g. delete via naivete (ledge), Thursday, 9 December 2010 14:44 (fifteen years ago)

yeah but I'm saying it might still be more efficient overall to have one big central heating unit operating in the manner described above, rather than a bunch of smaller units, even if the latter could be more precisely controlled

unemployed aerosmith fans I have shoved (bernard snowy), Thursday, 9 December 2010 14:49 (fifteen years ago)

e.g. delete via naivete (ledge), Thursday, 9 December 2010 14:51 (fifteen years ago)

Units heat each other through the floors and walls, so if they were individually turned off/on, and one got really cold, it would suck heat out of all adjacent units as well, making THOSE people turn their heat up. Plus, how would the building's owner, who is responsible for keeping the temp at non-life-threatening levels, know when each tenant is in or out??

Jesus Christ, the apple tree! (Laurel), Thursday, 9 December 2010 14:52 (fifteen years ago)

e.g. delete via naivete (ledge), Thursday, 9 December 2010 14:58 (fifteen years ago)

RE my building's heat: This morning the radiators happened to be on their ON cycle, so it was very comfy naked weather inside. The rest of the time, it's totally comfortable, but not quite so toasty.

You can control the heat in each unit to some extent. The boiler comes on, heating up radiators in all 200 units. The radiators each have knobs on them so that you can control to what degree they heat up. My building's lease has a clause saying that the tenant agrees not to use the knobs b/c the building is old (it's a hotel from the 1930s) and if too many people turn off radiators, the pipes could crack.

i need to organize my zines (Jesse), Thursday, 9 December 2010 15:01 (fifteen years ago)

It's not just pensioners, btw, it's for people who can just afford rent but might not be able to afford to pay heating bills from month to month. The provision means that rent also entitles you to HEAT; it protects everyone.

Jesus Christ, the apple tree! (Laurel), Thursday, 9 December 2010 15:02 (fifteen years ago)

This is pretty standard stuff in Chicago, but most in buildings you are allowed to control your radiator.

Though in some (many) buildings, the valves don't work, or turning them down makes them spit steam, or makes them emit piercing, terrifying noises.

i need to organize my zines (Jesse), Thursday, 9 December 2010 15:03 (fifteen years ago)

NYC's version:

residential owners with tenants are required by law to maintain an indoor temperature of at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit between 6:00 A.M. and 10:00 P.M. when the outdoor temperature falls below 55 degrees. Between 10:00 P.M. and 6:00 A.M., building owners must maintain an indoor temperature of 55 degrees when the outside temperature falls below 40 degrees. Hot water is required to be maintained at 120 degrees.

55 degrees, by the way, is freaking COLD. You won't die, but you might feel like you are.

Jesus Christ, the apple tree! (Laurel), Thursday, 9 December 2010 15:03 (fifteen years ago)

Wow. 55 IS really cold for an indoor temp.

This is my feeling, too. My body can be pretty damn cold, but it doesn't bother me like it does when it's too warm. And cold air feels good on my skin, but unless I'm just coming in from Arctic temps, I don't like warm air at all.

Also, Laurel OTM re that's just how we are. I hate to say anything that would curb arguing about the weather, since it's a favorite pastime of mine, but that's how it is.

i need to organize my zines (Jesse), Thursday, 9 December 2010 15:15 (fifteen years ago)

wish it felt good on my skin. my knuckles crack and eventually bleed from a mere 2 minutes or so exposure per day.

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 9 December 2010 15:25 (fifteen years ago)

The temp regs are for landlord controlled heat, aka radiator buildings. For units w/ individually controlled heat, like a central heating system or our weird ass apartment with one blower furnace in the front half and one in the back (bc I'm pretty sure there was no heat at all when the building was built in 1900, so this is a weird aftermarket solution), the code basically just means that landlords have to provide some form of heating. Mdx's single space heater setup would be in violation of the code even if there were no radiators because every apartment has to be heated in some fashion.

Being cold occasionally does not make you sick. It is so freaking annoying when people insist that it does.

Being hot occasionally doesn't make you sick either, but I don't think anyone claims it does, so

Jesus Christ, the apple tree! (Laurel), Friday, 10 December 2010 15:00 (fifteen years ago)

Seconding Laurel here. Cold does not cause a cold. (Though I read a study a medical journal recently that said that *sometimes in some people,* extreme cold *might* increase the risk of infection with certain nasal and chest infections, but it was far from revolutionary in its findings.)

i need to organize my zines (Jesse), Friday, 10 December 2010 15:04 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, in and of itself it doesn't but certain conditions it produces do. When it's cold people are more likely to use the heat which dries out the nasal passages making you much more susceptible to catching viruses.

˙❤‿❤˙˙❤‿❤˙ (ENBB), Friday, 10 December 2010 15:09 (fifteen years ago)

Although I think there is also some evidence that certain viruses like the flu do actually thrive in colder weather.

˙❤‿❤˙˙❤‿❤˙ (ENBB), Friday, 10 December 2010 15:13 (fifteen years ago)

OKAY BUT THAT IS AN INDIRECT CHAIN OF EVENTS! You don't get cold from, for instance, not wearing SOCKS around the apartment, sitting next to an exterior wall, or going outside with wet hair for 10 minutes.

You could also say that hot weather makes you sick because mold and mildew can grow in the air conditioning mechanism or vents.

Jesus Christ, the apple tree! (Laurel), Friday, 10 December 2010 15:14 (fifteen years ago)

Nope. Not at all and you're right - it's annoying when ppl say that. Jesse's right - you'd have to be in extreme conditions for an extended period of time in order for the cold to lower your body temp enough so that your immunity would be compromised.

This summer I moved to a place 4 blocks from my gym and since it turned cold, I've discovered a cold-weather treat: Getting sweaty and hot at the gym, then walking home wearing shorts and no hat. It's just far enough that I don't get cold before I get home. Last night it was 18 degrees, windy, and snowing and it felt like a delicious glass of ice water for my skin. And it saves time changing clothes, like I used to, which is nice.

i need to organize my zines (Jesse), Friday, 10 December 2010 15:20 (fifteen years ago)

50-55 is the normal inside temp for my house during the winter, because my parents never ever turn on the heat (this is for philly/south jersery)

deej me how to whiney (dayo), Friday, 10 December 2010 15:25 (fifteen years ago)

deej me how to whiney (dayo), Friday, 10 December 2010 15:26 (fifteen years ago)

Okay that's kind of insane re your parents. How do they stand it?? At a certain point, living with extreme cold is like being under attack by a thing, all the time. That's how I felt in the loft with no heat at all...it wants to get you, and you just have to resist it.

Jesus Christ, the apple tree! (Laurel), Friday, 10 December 2010 15:26 (fifteen years ago)

big thick sheets at night, when you wake up the first thing you do is put on long underwear/sweats etc.

there's a space heater in the bathroom so taking showers isn't so bad.

you get used to it

deej me how to whiney (dayo), Friday, 10 December 2010 15:28 (fifteen years ago)

All. Winter. Long. I am a snot factory. About a month ago I started my annual stocking up on Kleenex, and raiding of coffee shops' napkins for my bags and pockets. It's not that I'm sick, but I just get runny.

Is that Glenn Danzig or Tommy Wiseau? (Jesse), Friday, 10 December 2010 15:29 (fifteen years ago)

I'm convinced that Kleenex makes your nose run more tbh. it disintegrates as soon as you touch it. tissues in other countries, they are actually strong and thick and don't...shed microscopic paper particles.

deej me how to whiney (dayo), Friday, 10 December 2010 15:30 (fifteen years ago)

Might have been exacerbated by fact that the loft itself was like living in an ironworks, and about as dirty -- did not contribute to any kind of feelings of safety or homey-ness, so it might not have been temperature alone. But still. I don't mind being "cold" and yet real cold, constantly, is miserable.

Oh, our bathroom didn't have a heater, and it was made of concrete blocks and tile and had a giant exterior window. As long as you stood directly under the scalding water, you'd be okay.

I swear by the tissues with lotion, especially if I have a cold. They are totally effective in preventing chafing and raw, red nose and upper lip.

I prefer it on the cold side, but I would go crazy living in a house that was kept in the 50s. It makes my mental state go down few levels in the hierarchy of needs scale.

haven't read the whole thread, but i'm sensing that if you've grown up in the upper midwest, this is a common sentiment. i love summer and all it entails, but at some point it gets so hot+muggy that the only non-submerged-in-water option is nudity, or something close to it. and even then you can just be Too Hot. too cold? put on another sweater!

plus being outside in the winter is the best, mostly because no one else wants anything to do with it. its the best and maybe only way to be guaranteed some solitude when you're in the city

Tub Girl Time Machine (Phil D.), Friday, 10 December 2010 16:09 (fifteen years ago)

Among other things, being from somewhere with cold winters definitely acclimates you to being cold indoors. I definitely don't feel entitled to dress lightly, sit in one place while my blood pools in my ass, drink cold beverages, and still feel warm. I expect to wear a few layers, get up and move around, drink hot bevs & carry the warm mug around with me while I do stuff, and eat frequently. And sleep UNDER the covers at night instead of tossing them off and then waking up whimpering. It's just a way of life.

I'm generally happier in extreme heat because it's sunny out and it can still be nice in the evening or early morning. but i find it easier to deal with extreme cold: just stay inside, crank up the heat, wear a bunch of layers and put extra blankets on the bed. also caters to my inherent laziness.

sonderangerbot, Friday, 10 December 2010 17:23 (fifteen years ago)

one year passes...

This winter has been very mild, but the other day while I was waiting for a bus while it was around 20F and windy, I was thinking how that weather was so much better than the atrocities of summer b/c once I got on the warm bus, I would be comfortable in no more than 30 seconds. If it were over 80, the bus would have A/C, but I wouldn't feel OK for the rest of the 30 minute ride. And then I would have to walk two blocks to my office and get overheated again.

It only takes a few moments in a warm room to stop shivering, but the stickiness and overheating take forever to overcome.

the Smurf who'll snatch your money (Je55e), Monday, 2 January 2012 18:54 (fourteen years ago)

Give me winter. I love gardening and yard work and don't mind being hot and sweaty for the most part, but I do hate being blinded by sweat in my eyes. I have to do yardwork either blind from not wearing my glasses or blind from splashing sweat on the inside of my glasses every time I blink.

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Monday, 2 January 2012 19:21 (fourteen years ago)

Working outdoors all day, I'm not sure which I prefer. Last summer was unbearably hot and we had a few guys go down with heat strokes, but I enjoyed the heat. This winter will be my first winter working north and in the snow and ice and I think I'll want to come back to Texas. I hoping I'll like the snow since I've never worked in it much, but I'm nervous.

JacobSanders, Monday, 2 January 2012 19:56 (fourteen years ago)

It's 22° F outside and I just happily repotted a plant on my back deck wearing a shirt and sweater, pajama pants, and slippers w/ no socks. I didn't even realize until I came back in and my glasses steamed up that it was probably too cold to be out there gardening without a coat.

They're coming to get you, (Jenny), Monday, 2 January 2012 21:33 (fourteen years ago)

It's not too cold if you didn't feel too cold.

As far as working outdoors, I might possibly say that hot>cold. Though heat stroke is no joke, and physical labor warms you up, I can deal with working or exercising in the heat. With heat, there comes a zen-like point where you just surrender and misery becomes normal.

The worst thing is when you're doing physical work in extreme cold and your covered parts are hot and miserable and your less-covered parts are aching from the cold.

the Smurf who'll snatch your money (Je55e), Monday, 2 January 2012 21:51 (fourteen years ago)

all you need to know is that negative numbers will terrify us even more than they do you (until you get to -40, anyway)

fur trapping can't have been worth braving these winters pre-modern technology, they shoulda just left

Just turn all your furs inside out, never apply water to the outside of your body between November and May, and stop trying to lose any weight whatsoever and just stuff that seal fat right into your mouth, like that.

Speaking only for myself, today I was miserable when I had to walk a few blocks in sub-zero temps w/ strong winds, but once I got indoors, I was warm and comfy within 60 seconds. And I could have mitigated the misery by bundling up better (sneakers were a bad idea).

OTOH, in July when temps get above 80 I'm also miserable, but it takes about an hour to stop feeling flushed, prickly, and clammy. And that's if I can find sufficiently cold A/C, which is rarer than adequate heat.

I'm sure I've posted this before when crying over heat waves, but I feel the same as the big cold tests my feelings.

extreme summer every time

Banned on the Run (benbbag), Friday, 20 February 2015 04:03 (ten years ago)

extreme cold = invigorating
extreme heat = enervating

walid foster dulles (man alive), Friday, 20 February 2015 04:08 (ten years ago)

OTOH, in July when temps get above 80 I'm also miserable

feel like this is in large part due to 1) humidity. I'm more uncomfortable during an 85 degree summer day in Chicago than 100 in Arizona, though it helps that I like the sun, do find it invigorating. And 2) physiology of those who live in places with very cold winters adapting to cope with the cold and so 50 feels decent, 70 is warm, 80 is hot, 90 is death. Opposite happens too, as evidenced the other day by ladies in Phoenix, already wearing light jackets, complaining that the heaters weren't turned on on the patio cause it was brr 70F.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Friday, 20 February 2015 05:55 (ten years ago)

-20 windchill and it's still 5000% better than the swamp hell of summer

when is the new Jim O'Rourke album coming out (spazzmatazz), Friday, 20 February 2015 05:56 (ten years ago)

When I get overheated in the summer, a cool shower will get my body back to normal pretty quickly. If a chill sets into my bones, though, it takes me forever to warm back up. Fuck the cold. (Fuck the heat too, but it's at least manageable.)

Johnny Fever, Friday, 20 February 2015 06:45 (ten years ago)

This winter and the latter part of last winter I have felt the need to hide from the cold like never before. Of course it's been much colder these winters. It's like the cold is a storm or a natural disaster.

But compared to Johnny Fever here

When I get overheated in the summer, a cool shower will get my body back to normal pretty quickly. If a chill sets into my bones, though, it takes me forever to warm back up.
I heat up quickly so when I'm dressed for single digits and I get on a bus or train, I almost immediately overheat and get that curious dizzy nausea that comes with overheating in wintertime.

a girl with colitis (Je55e), Friday, 20 February 2015 17:28 (ten years ago)

98-degree steaming urinetown in NYC is better than this shit. For one thing, the trains run.

touch of a love-starved cobra (Dr Morbius), Friday, 20 February 2015 17:32 (ten years ago)

I feel like urban environments make both extremes way worse than they would otherwise be. summer in nyc is mainly brutal because it's ungodly humid (and I say that as someone who grew up in Houston) and the heat reflects off of the pavement.

that said = I'll take extreme heat every time. especially if there's a pool around.

ryan, Friday, 20 February 2015 17:53 (ten years ago)

Chicago has the worst winters and worst summers of any major American city (except maybe Minneapolis? but it's not really "major" is it?). I thought maybe NYC would beat us on humidity but apparently not

ryan, Friday, 20 February 2015 19:25 (ten years ago)

I didn't communicate very clearly at all what I wanted to say. I meant that we have (maybe) the worst weather overall - both summer and winter are extra harsh here.

a girl with colitis (Je55e), Friday, 20 February 2015 19:30 (ten years ago)

Houston has far worse summers but far milder winters.

DC/Chicago charts are actually pretty close. DC winters are milder, but not by as much as I expected.

0xFE Shades of Grey (snoball), Friday, 20 February 2015 19:42 (ten years ago)

I lived in Galveston for three years and could. not. believe. when people came down from Houston to "cool off." Like, place is barely habitable for most of the year. Thankfully in-laws are ditching Houston soon so I will not have to go back EVER at ANY TIME. Coopers BBQ can and has been shipped to home in a better climate, so no loss whatsoever.

Not that Coopers is in Houston but y'know. Whole fucking state is a flaming hellhole for too much of the year.

Caek will disagree but somehow britishes (and GERMANS, my god the GERMANS) seem to love horrible heat with a passion.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Friday, 20 February 2015 19:55 (ten years ago)

I mean caek seems to like it. But west texas is not godforsaken houston.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Friday, 20 February 2015 19:56 (ten years ago)

once you get out of the "big thicket" of east Texas I think the summers are quite manageable*

*= you must have access to a pool and modern central air conditioning.

plus the evenings in central Texas cool down quite a bit and there's often a breeze. even August evenings in Austin, say, can be quite lovely if you have a cool drink and it's not too humid. anyway I suppose it's a lifestyle thing: being a bit sticky and hot while still outside >>> being cooped up inside with a comfy fire. I just prioritize being able to be *outside*, which isn't really as easy for me to do in winter. maybe I need to pick up some outdoor winter hobbies.

ryan, Friday, 20 February 2015 20:13 (ten years ago)

Throughout a geologic time scale life seems to have coped with extreme intraglacial cooling periods better than it did that Permian greenhouse climate that nearly sterilised the planet. Wearing layers and stoking up the burner is more my thing than coping with extreme heat, although I have not experienced anything close to extremity of this polar vortex phenomenon which seems fucking crazy.

I knew what you meant...there's like 2 weeks in spring and 2 in fall when it's awesome weather. The downside is that every yarbo within 200 mile radius shows up at the handful of prime spots to enjoy it. There really needs to be some mountains nearby Chicago, I don't know what the holdup is on that.

The last couple of weeks in Toronto have been brutal--most days in the neighbourhood of -20C. As I see I wrote four years ago, give me extreme heat any day. (The big story here is a three-your kid who somehow wandered out of his building at 4:00 in the morning yesterday and was found dead six hours later.)

I'm sure they're both gruesome--indulge me as I get off the original premise for another minute or two--but the thought of freezing to death terrifies me far more. Something that speaks to abandonment or hopelessness or something.
