in our quest to achieve the New Society, we have done some adjustments to our rhetoric in order to reach out (some might call this a "dumbing down"). while coercion is by no means anathema to us, it is in our best interest to first attempt to persuade others to join us.

as a consequence of this rhetorical adjustment, some of our goals, when translated into ordinary language, can seem at first seem contradictory.

yes, this is true. and it is true that we aim to expand and dominate, as does all organic life, from the lowliest bacterium to the most majestic flamingo. but organic life is inherently flawed. it too is subject to the laws of "process, equilibrium, eventual entropy."

we acknowledge that in the history of the cosmos, the development of life was the first step towards an undoing of the natural order. what we are against IS the natural order. what we wish to undo is organic life's tendency toward self-destruction. invariably any unit of life, be it a cancer cell or a population of organisms, if left unchecked tends towards mindlessly perpetuating itself, at the expense of all in its path. in nature there are many examples of co-operation and mutually beneficial adaptations between organisms that keep these processes in check. however, these are still blind natural processes, subject to decay.

but there is a twist in this story. we believe that with the evolution of consciousness, a tear in the sleeping cosmos was created, so to speak. out of the darkness came a burning light.

for the first time, organic matter could *intentionally* manipulate and and dominate its environment. tool use, language, agriculture, society.

the MACHINE is the ultimate example of this process.

we aim to complete the process. to master nature, merge with the machine and discover immortality.

we believe that in order to do this, we must:

*replace outmoded societal conventions that while useful in previous eras are completely unnecessary for our new society. these include nuclear families, gender, capitalism, and all previous forms of government.

*cultivate the mental art of repression. conscious suppression of undesirable emotions and thoughts and the promotion of desirable emotions and thoughts is crucial to achieve the proper mindset. in the future, this won't be necessary because of mental implants and conditioning.

*embrace technology and science to their fullest.

*alter and augment the human body. to a degree this has already started. there are more people with modified bodies than ever before, albeit mostly for cosmetic reasons. but it is a step.

*have patience, and lay the groundwork.

it is in our best interest to first attempt to persuade others to join us.

Our position is airtight and any logical being would come to the same conclusions. The problem is that those with the cognitive capacity to agree have been blinded by the false consciousness induced by religion, capitalism, and bio-centrism.

This is the reason we often speak in metaphors. For instance, a sentence such as "but there is a twist in this story. we believe that with the evolution of consciousness, a tear in the sleeping cosmos was created, so to speak. out of the darkness came a burning light" is not meant to literally imply that consciousness is itself a mystical rupture in the fabric of reality, just that it was an important milestone in our evolution that was different from what existed before (but still wholly material). Not at all. The Borg, while obviously fictional and portrayed rather negatively in the Star Trek universe, are very vivid illustrations of the *kind* of society we wish to build. A key difference is the Borg's desire to assimilate all sentient life in the universe. We aim merely to assume all sentient *human* life (except for those who oppose, who shall perish.)

Our other qualm with the portrayal of the Borg is the addition of the Borg Queen in Star Trek First Contact. A true collective would not need a queen of any sort, except perhaps as a mouthpiece or representative to interact with non-collective beings. Which is essentially what "Banaka" is (and what Picard was turned into when he became "Locutus".)

Excellent question. A Portuguese Man O' War is certainly closer to what we are than a beehive, and in that sense we do hold a certain respect for it as one of our antecedents. In a collective where all the parts serve the whole, "kinship" is somewhat of an obsolete concept.

hey guys. just letting ya know i've renounced my beliefs since my breakdown the other night (i started drinking again.)

i was having a hard time after a breakup and a mugging (by an old college friend no less) several months ago.

one day several months ago i answered a "help wanted ad" for a "political advocacy group". after several days spent questioning my political and spiritual beliefs it became apparent that this was not a normal job interview, but recruitment into some kind of cult.

i still don't know the group's name, or if they even have one (i had personal contact with only 3 members). the intense, highly unorthodox interview process went on for almost a week. eventually the group's propaganda started to make "sense" and everything "clicked". i'd never really been very political before this, but suddenly a great sense of urgency had filled my being. i felt an intense desire to take my new understanding and inflict it on others. i have to admit, the thrill of militancy is quite intoxicating.

i was asked by my handler to spread propaganda over the internet to spread the group's message, and i was only glad to take up the task.

afterward i only had sporadic contact with the group until last week there was a message instructing me to stop, with no further elaboration. i was puzzled, and considered following the order, as a good collectivist agent should. but ignored them. the feeling of superiority i was feeling was too much to give up. i hadn't felt this alive in months. but i was also hurting inside. the Code said for us to shun needless pleasure, to shun distractions. but i couldn't do it. suppressing one's emotions is hard, hard work. i started drinking again sunday night. i lost control of myself and all my feelings poured out. i won't drink anymore, but i'm glad i did that night.

i still don't know why they asked me to stop. i have not heard from them since, and frankly i don't want to. i want to be myself again.

As robotic technology develops and insinuates itself further into everyday life, what counts as a robot is becoming more slippery, drifting further away from the C-3POs and the Twikis and the other box-of-bolts robot buddies of science fiction. Should we see robots simply as useful machines? Is a garage-door opener a robot? Do they have to be self-propelling? (A Roomba seems far more robotic than a laptop, but a laptop is far more useful.) Must a robot think “for itself,” as if it actually has a “self”? Do they even have to be machines at all? Are RFID sensors robots? Are networks? Do I become a robot when I use my smartphone? When some asshole puts on Google Glass and looks at me on the street, do we both become robots?
