Jeez, fuck people for getting all uptight over this. What, none of them had ever seen 2001 before? It was the end of the movie anyway. And it's Hollywood. It's 2001. You're supposed to do shit like this at 2001. You can't turn Hollywood into a Disneyfied tourist trap forever. Eventually the real Hollywood will bubble back up through the surface and drive all of these assholes back to the midwest.

witnessed a similar-ish thing at a showing of the second lord of the rings film in liverpool where i was at uni at the time. drunken scally lad about 17 starts barking "queg!" (liverpool slang for gay guy) every so often during the film, 3 or 4 of the friends he's come with finding this highly amusing. people start groaning, murmuring and tutting but nobody actually says anything until he starts making this long farting noise like a trumpet and shouting something that sounded like "patties!" or "batties!" like "brrrrruuuppp... bat-TIEES!" so some quite posh middle aged guy sitting a few rows ahead of him turns around and says "excuse, we're trying to watch a film please, can you be QUIET?!" so the kid stands up and starts threatening him, "eh... don't talk to me like that yer fucken faggot, i'll a've yer off, ya little knob'ed!" etc, etc. this brings back the general groaning and exasperated murmuring in the crowd, only even louder. he looks around and shouts "come on den, yer not gonna do nothin, yer all little FAGGOTS." by this time two ushers are standing at the end of his aisle and are trying to get his attention, but he's ignoring them. he starts doing this little bez-dance and laughing while going on about how this is a shit film and we are all little faggots/quegs etc and how he doesn't give a shit. eventually two large security guys walk in and ask him to leave, he says "nah, mate... s'alright, gonna watch the film now, i'm hust sitting here chillin." looks lke there might be an altercation but him and his mates eventually walk out laughing and gooning around after one of the guards promises not to touch them or do anything if they just leave.
probably more entertaining than the snooze-fest film itself, imo.

Deal gently? You have no idea how bad it was. You can't tell from the video what was happening. I was a row behind. The guy manhandled a kid and hit people. I doubt this was acid- more like meth. The police tazed him 5x outside & he was still going. Dude who punched him did it to stop him from strangling a man- & it worked. I'm appalled by how many cowards and enablers there were in the theatre, laughing while this jerk tried to hurt others. I'm glad SOME people had guts & stopped him. Derrick1842 20 hours ago 25 * zbilson 1 day ago 15
@9999alphaomega The theater's employees were on the floor trying to get the guy out of there like everyone else. There are no security guards at relatively small theaters like this one, but the cops were called as soon as he started screaming. The Egyptian theater actually handled the situation very well, pausing the movie, getting him out of there, and then rewinding the reel to the part before he started screaming. zbilson 1 day ago 15

Concern for his personal safety is one thing. Whining about missing the ending of a 42 year old movie that gets shown at least annually in L.A. at these types of revival screenings is silly bullshit.
Complaining about acid freakouts @ 2001 is equivalent to asking for spoiler alerts in a discussion of Citizen Kane. Besides, 2001 should be seen at the Cinerama dome, not the Egyptian.

But people who say "hey, let's drop acid and do x or y" are pretty dumb and are asking for trouble. I have never wanted to take any drug and go into a movie theatre, they're just that oppressive. The only level of intoxication I can manage before a movie is a couple of pints. Enough to get an anxiety- and claustrophobia-reducing buzz with no weird mental fx.

Wk-you almost seem to be suggesting that the fault lie with people who didn't drop acid. Besides, what the fuck is the point of going to a movie if yer attitude is "eh this movie is 42 years old, I don't care if a bunch of people rape giraffes in front of the screen during it". You see no value in a public screening of the movie...they did. Ergo, the problem does not lie with them. Ffs I'd be equally annoyed if he just shouted through the movie even if he wasn't on acid.
― turn in yer badge (San Te), Sunday, 12 September 2010 20:37 (fifteen years ago)
heh. I think it's HIGHLY unlikely that they were already on acid and then decided to check out local movie times because they were getting a little bored. "We should go to the movies." "We're never going to get out of this room alive, man! Is life a comedy? Are we in hell? Everything is so red in here."
Of course it was pre-planned.

Besides, what the fuck is the point of going to a movie if yer attitude is "eh this movie is 42 years old, I don't care if a bunch of people rape giraffes in front of the screen during it".
Hey now, I draw the line at giraffe rape. The movie has to be over 50 years old for that shit to slide.
You see no value in a public screening of the movie...they did. Ergo, the problem does not lie with them. Ffs I'd be equally annoyed if he just shouted through the movie even if he wasn't on acid.
This wasn't some kids talking through Avatar or something. It was a guy having a serious issue beyond his control. During a movie that was, on its initial release, an event known for people going to see it while tripping. If I had been there I would be telling my friends "some guy freaked out at 2001, it was crazy," not "OMG, some jerk was yelling during the movie and I couldn't hear what HAL was saying and they had to replay the last reel and we missed our dinner reservation."

The only movie I've ever seen while tripping was this one, and man, let me tell you, i haven't quite ever recovered.
This. Once I was on the upper floor of some friends' house and there was a guy in the apartment foyer/lobby across the street, staring at me through the glass door and wearing a fucking paper bag on his head. I knew for a fact he was only trying to mess with us because we were tripping. He never gave up the act though.
Next day I go over there on my way home, and the man turns out to be a yellow legal sheet of paper taped to the door, warning residents not to prop the door open or some shit.

"We should go to the movies." "We're never going to get out of this room alive, man! Is life a comedy? Are we in hell? Everything is so red in here."

Only movies I've seen on acid are The Matrix (no real memories) and Say Anything (scenes would play forward - and then backward, a couple of minutes at a time, then in my mind it would move to the next scene and do the same thing again)/
Both in private, because I was always too scared to do hallucinogens in public. If I'm getting fucked up, it's with friends at someone's apt/house.

LOL, guy's voice at 3:50 of max's first video sounds like Robert Osborne. TCM presents the history of dropping acid while watching 2001.

I can tell you, I handled it like a champ in spite of thinking the stranger next to me was a man I made up in my own mind.
The Hitchhiker's Guide explains this: "It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, but that not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds. So if every planet in the universe has a population of zero, then the entire population of the universe must also be zero, and any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination."
