i have a lot of friends who are music nerds to some degree, and most of them have aeroplane in their collections but probably only 1 or 2 listen to pavement. these are all people in their early 20's though, myself included, so we were not quite at nascent-music-fan age during pavement's heyday, which is a big part of it i suspect. NMH is definitely reaching a different audience, one which i suspect overlaps with 00s indie touchstones like the arcade fire more than it does with 90s ones like pavement.

i wasn't leaving out techno/dance on purpose, my post was more personal, what hip hop meant to me back then. i didn't even know techno existed back then, and i still don't really know enough about it to say how significant it was or which era was important.

though that said, i don't think it would have felt the same to me because hip hop wasn't just watching a music take shape, it was really an exposure to people, or the lives of people in america that i couldn't imagine and had no knowledge of...like i would see the videos and think about the bronx or compton and it was so far away to me. even just the street names and the neighborhoods or references to local businesses (like sir mix-a-lot talking about dick's hamburgers) clothing or shoes, just all the little details of lives i couldn't fathom.

techno doesn't have those things.

it's weird to think about that time when everything wasn't available to you all the time, how amazing it was when you found something.

The reason I don't think that hobbyhorsing is a problem is because of posters like, for example Geir. I don't want to be on a board where that is considered a crime. Hobbyhorsing without rudeness or ad hominem is part of what makes ILX a diverse & interesting place.

The other thing I wished to add is to discern between "meta" meaning discussing the rules, mores and structure of ILX which is "deal with it" territory and meta meaning discussing individuals and posters which potentially is ad hominem and I feel is up for flagging. The terms are often used interchangeably. I am not using them in that sense.

A PIGEON smashed through the window of a California police helicopter and hit the pilot in the face.

The bizarre incident forced the El Monte Police Department pilot to put out a distress call at 5pm local time yesterday while flying over Baldwin Park, east of Los Angeles city centre, the Pasadena Star-News reported.

He managed to make an emergency landing at a nearby school despite the shock of being struck by the bird.

The pilot was taken to the LA County-USC Medical Center for treatment.

El Monte Police Department Sgt Beatriz Guadarrama said, "He appears to be in stable condition".

The pigeon was killed in the accident.

I don't think the problem is with European cities, to be honest. In Helsinki, and every other big European city I've been to, the real city folk know the correct escalator code of conduct: stand on the right if you're not walking, and let the people who are in a hurry walk on the left side. When I'm visiting other cities as a tourist I still follow this code. The people who don't seem to know how to behave in escalators are, based on my observation, country folk who are just visiting the city or have recently moved to the city. Apparently this is because there are no escalators on the countryside? Still, what I don't get is that these people don't seem to learn the proper behaviour by watching the other people in the escalators. Unless this is the very first time in your life you're using an escalator, you should've already picked up how to do it. If you can't learn how to act in the big city, don't move here.

So it looks like in almost every Disney movie with a female protagonist, the gender of the protagonists has been made clear in the title - even in the cases where there's no canonical name for the story, or the movie is based on an original script. And hardly any of these movies have tanked.

today i was getting some porridge and the eat chain of food stores seems to have adopted a policy of taking your name while they process your order, instead of roaring PORRIDGE across the shop like visigoths, anyway the (extremely beautiful) french till attendant asked my name and i said "ronan", and she said "ronan?" and i have so little faith in anyone over here getting it right first time that before she finished i said "no "RO-NAN" then realised that's what she said and we both laughed.

she is now my wife.

back in the 80s i somehow managed to have no idea about whatever it was that was going on in nicaragua that people were so indignant about, and eventually it got too late to ask anyone without scorn being heaped upon my person, and there was no google for finding things out discreetly, and i lived in wellington where people were stooped and bowed from the burden of the intense pomposity of their thoughts about the world stage and their sorrow about how the world stage would be enthralled by their thoughts if only it wasn't too far away to know of them, so i couldn't have been in a worse place to have this shameful ignorance problem.
