ILX Compilation v4: Tiny Music (Deadline/Submissions/etc!!)

Message Bookmarked
Bookmark Removed

OK, moving forward! Here is a nice outline:

  • The song/piece/etc that you submit must be tiny, with a MAXIMUM runtime of 77 seconds (1:17). But don't be under the impression that you have to create a 77 second song; it can be 5 seconds or 23 seconds or however many seconds you'd like. As long as it's not more than 77 (the shorter, the better IMO)
  • Since these musics are so tiny, you can submit more than one if you'd like! I'll say a maximum of three (3).
  • When you have finished your work, send it to ilxtinymusic at gmail dot com. I'd highly suggest either an uncompressed WAV or AIFF (iirc gmail has a 25MB attachment limit and maxing out at 1:17, this shouldn't be a problem). You can also send a high-bitrate MP3 if you'd like, I guess (like 256+).
  • I am going to set the deadline of Sunday, November 14th, giving you slightly less than two months. It's the end of a weekend so all you last-minute folk can still throw something together, and it's also not the weekend RIGHT before Thanksgiving, so it won't interfere with travel/preparations/Thanksgiving crazy.
I am so very excited to see what comes out of this.

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Monday, 20 September 2010 08:44 (fifteen years ago)

hmm would 1:27 sneak in if I asked nicely? That's still tiny, I think.

i want in!

microtonal hall & oates (get bent), Monday, 20 September 2010 09:11 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, um, me please?

I've never done one of these before because I have problems with finishing tracks, but 45-77 seconds seems about the range they grow to before I feel like I ought to have ideas about what they need to do. Um. And if those don't sound finished enough, I can just make 20 seconds of strange noises for people to furrow their brow at between proper tracks, I guess...

patapon pataphysics (a passing spacecadet), Monday, 20 September 2010 09:18 (fifteen years ago)

I am going to be a hardass abt the 77sec thing. Sorry. I originally wanted to make it 30 but everyone kvetched. 77 seems like a good threshhold for "smaller-than-normal" and I am interested to see what people do when they're forced to reapproach the format in a way that forces them to convey all of their ideas with such severe restrictions. Think Brian Eno's Microsoft sound which is absolutely magical:

Also I seemed to have forgotten that Tiny Music was the name of an Stone Temple Pilots album. Should we change the name of this? ILX Compilation v4: Lil' Baby Songs 4 U perhaps

I've got a 76.5 sec track ready to go, contemplating submitting another couple before the end but I reckon 1 each wd be nice if there were enough submissions.

El Tomboto, Friday, 12 November 2010 13:51 (fifteen years ago)

When you have finished your work, send it to ilxtinymusic at gmail dot com. I'd highly suggest either an uncompressed WAV or AIFF (iirc gmail has a 25MB attachment limit and maxing out at 1:17, this shouldn't be a problem). You can also send a high-bitrate MP3 if you'd like, I guess (like 256+).

Wow, so many submissions so far but KEEP THEM COMING!! In the next few days I'm going to create a .xls to keep track of everything with the song title, preferred artist credit, and ilx handle. So if you haven't sent me all of those things I will follow up in the coming days.

twisted sister hazel dickens (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 12 November 2010 17:40 (fifteen years ago)

Is there a limit on how many tracks each person can enter?

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Friday, 12 November 2010 17:49 (fifteen years ago)

How many do you think you've got so far?

http://tinyurl.com/koalalala (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 12 November 2010 17:49 (fifteen years ago)

I've got about 25 tracks totaling ~25 minutes. Half of them are exactly 1:17 (I've only got 7 under a minute)

Limit is 3 per person but if you want to submit more than that I'll let you as long as they're under 0:45 seconds

I have no idea how I'm going to sequence this.

I never got Garageband to output in any other format than MP3, though you can at least change the quality of the MP3 to 320 which should be OK.

As to the seconds of silence at the end, I'm trying to remember how to fix that. I've used so many recording softwares that I forget which one is which. Is Garageband the one that doesn't actually go by the endpoint you set, but by the loop you define? Or is that Cubase? I'll try and look when I get home but I don't have my mac with me.

no help with garageband?

Shorten the song?

Harry Boors (Noodle Vague), Monday, 15 November 2010 13:00 (fifteen years ago)

iTunes lengthened the song that was 1:17 in Reason to 1:18 in iTunes. So I just sped it up from 131bpm to 131.5 BPM and it was fine.

(can you do this in Garageband?)

Wheal Dream, Monday, 15 November 2010 13:03 (fifteen years ago)

in Garageband, there's a little purple arrow at the top of all the tracks (in the section with the time delimiters) that you can use to determine the ending point of the song. So you need to make sure it's actually placed where you want the ending.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 15 November 2010 14:06 (fifteen years ago)

speeding it up would only work if the track was all software instruments; if there are any "real" instruments then it won't adjust those

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 15 November 2010 14:07 (fifteen years ago)

I made a track for this btw but I don't know if I like it.

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Monday, 15 November 2010 18:05 (fifteen years ago)

I never got Garageband to output in any other format than MP3, though you can at least change the quality of the MP3 to 320 which should be OK.

Choose "Export Song to Disk" under the Share menu and make sure "Compress" is unchecked in the resulting dialog. Hit export and GB will save it as a AIFF file.

should have been 154 rpm imo. Multiples of 77 ftw

I am working on getting this into some sort of logical order at the moment, and then I will tag/rename them nicely and produce a perfectly neat .zip file of 320kbps mp3's

Seriously some of these are totally getting stuck in my head a lot now.

Once I get everything sequenced I'm going to email everyone who submitted just to confirm that everything is spelled/capitalized/attributed correctly but I wanna keep it a surprise to everyone else til I post a link.

But I definitely received your tracks. The one is v majestic in an E6 sort of way and I really like it!

It's the shoehorning of cricket references into songs that gives it away.

I'm listening to this right now and it's really good!

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Thursday, 9 December 2010 13:13 (fifteen years ago)

I actually only logged back onto ILX to comment on this comp...

I've listened to it one and a half times through now and it's of pleasingly high quality throughout. Because it's such a huge chunk of music (surprising given its actual brevity) I starred tracks that stood out as particularly wonderful - so my initial favourites (and I'm sure I'll add more as I get into it):

Zappi - Snowblood, Tyler W - Denver Diatribe, Kelly - What You Do To Me, Clonefeed - Skipper, Snoball - Gas, Fügügüffü - ID, 77_2 - Capitaine Jay Vee, rent - 771, Grannykart - Minor Antarctic Island

(oops, sorry I think I've inverted artist and title in some of those but you get which tracks I mean.)

Karen D. Tregaskin, Thursday, 9 December 2010 13:25 (fifteen years ago)

this thing is great, my track fails in comparison to all of these.

Yeah, there's an ass for that. (chrisv2010), Thursday, 9 December 2010 14:13 (fifteen years ago)

minor antarctic island sounds like the theme from "heroes"

Yeah, there's an ass for that. (chrisv2010), Thursday, 9 December 2010 14:57 (fifteen years ago)

What a great comp. A lot of you should be recording/releasing music if you aren't already! Really happy to have been part of this.

Here's some of my other music (much longer than the tracks on here): soundcloud.com/professorjorge

ol dirty malkmus = awesome

tylerw, Thursday, 9 December 2010 16:40 (fifteen years ago)

i think a fun way to listen to this for the first time might be to just put the lot in a playlist, hit shuffle and not look at what's playing unless i really like the sound of it (which could certainly happen a lot) so gonna try that tonight - no disrespect intended to stevie for thoughtful sequencing tho

would anyone be averse to me posting a link on my blog? totally cool if we want to keep it an ILX-only thang.

tylerw, Thursday, 9 December 2010 20:24 (fifteen years ago)

Gosh - mine are quiet. Should've mixed them louder. ah well...

A happenstance discovery of asynchronous lesbians (Capitaine Jay Vee), Thursday, 9 December 2010 20:50 (fifteen years ago)

Same here - my 1st and 3rd tracks could do with being a bit louder as well.

I think I suffer from that pretty badly as well, especially coming 13 seconds after EdIII's marvellous blast of raucousness (xp)

but hey it's not a prob, listen to the whole thing damn loud imo

ken c's is one of the real underrated growers here i think

tylerw, Thursday, 9 December 2010 21:01 (fifteen years ago)

I've got "Denver Diatribe" on my list of favorites here, so I guess it hit its mark!

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 9 December 2010 21:03 (fifteen years ago)

"Snowblood"
"Denver Diatribe"
"Blues Name"
"Song for Denver Lucas"
"House of Clocks"
"Production"
and "Steering" all made me sit up and take notice.

Special, special recognition to all the Clonefeed songs. I wrote all of those down too. I would buy any Sega game for the soundtrack alone based on those songs.

Two Denver songs, eh? "Denver Lucas" could almost be a cover of an outtake from later Minutemen album.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 9 December 2010 22:36 (fifteen years ago)

This is v good! I could play favourites but maybe I'll give it a few more listens first as there's just so much to take in.

(Still sad that smoke came out of my computer when I was hoping to work on it but would've been totally outclassed so all good in the end)

moiré eel (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 9 December 2010 22:39 (fifteen years ago)

I'm sure more of the others will latch on after a few more listens, but on Day 1, those were the ones that stood out.

I dare someone to create a poll that ends in a year.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 9 December 2010 22:42 (fifteen years ago)

this is excellent!

my two big favorites are "Song for Denver Lucas" and "Repetition Pears 77"

lotta good stuff on here -- lou & surm, Grannykart, crüt, P Nunez... latebloomer's tracks are kinda hysterical, I'm not sure if he meant them to be funny or not...felt like he was channelling mid-70s Devo

Thanks for the nice words. I've been enjoying this so much, honoured to be part of such an accomplished and fantastic sounding compilation! Kudos to everyone involved.

here are card declined lyrics

daymare nation, terminal station
total nihilation, noise divination
hit the black lights and I spring into action
everything's moving in a circular fashion

disco balls, hotel bloedel
no need to wash a taint cuz my shit don't smell
hit bong rips while yr sister trips
we're smokin pixie sticks with a pair of roach clips

(I'm a hot and bothered astronaut) eatin corn dogs
with sriracha sauce, get yr tube top off
bass mutilation, prognostication
trash gets off on zombie penetration

here is the church, here is the steeple
open up the doors (I see dead people)
flunked science but one thing I know
mix ben-gay with K-Y, you could make a hormone

never got along with my coaches
like upson pratt hates roaches
when I shine I shine like a fly in yr wine
yr card was declined, PVD divine
(doggone girl is mine)

textile in thighville (get bent), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 22:21 (fourteen years ago)

There was talk of a protest music comp while we were on the sandbox? I got as far as recording an instrumental which emil.y was going to do some reciting of Marxist texts for, but then we just stopped, I don't think I've even listened to it since last year?

We'll probably end up doing a different them, anyway, I'm guessing.

White Chocolate Cheesecake, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 22:34 (fourteen years ago)

textile in thighville (get bent), Thursday, 9 February 2012 03:04 (fourteen years ago)

Oops, sorry WCC - I had a rotten cold and was generally feeling blue so never got around to it, but I must confess it just slipped my mind over the last couple of weeks. I will get on it soon - I think either tomorrow or Monday (recording on my birthday!) are good days, so at least by early next week.

time is a train that make the future flag post (snoball), Monday, 6 January 2014 14:35 (twelve years ago)

Hey, nobody's stopping anyone from doing a new all original one. What I might suggest, though, is a post here AND ILM, or a post on one board linking to the thread on the other.

sarahell, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 10:01 (twelve years ago)

xp The U2 pre-cover came between comps 3 and 4, so pre-covers don't increase the volume number (comp 5 followed the precover 'pick a track title' idea but the original album was from the 70s). So a future comp would be volume 6?

What I might suggest, though, is a post here AND ILM, or a post on one board linking to the thread on the other.

Sage advice from Ned as always. Main thread on ILE and a locked thread on ILM with just a link to the main thread?
