pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 23 September 2010 14:53 (fifteen years ago)

Monty back in business.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 23 September 2010 14:54 (fifteen years ago)

Biggest selectorial fuck-up: Tredwell ahead of Rashid in the Performance Squad. Unconscionable.

Panesar is an error as well but he won't get a game - Australia's best hope of success is neutralising Swann

acoleuthic, Thursday, 23 September 2010 14:55 (fifteen years ago)

Am a big fan of Tremlett's inclusion and I think he'll be in the team after two, maybe three Tests

acoleuthic, Thursday, 23 September 2010 14:56 (fifteen years ago)

dunno, always the chance of 2 spinners. At least swanny and monty are attacking spinners not the old fashioned defensive ones of the past.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 23 September 2010 14:57 (fifteen years ago)

My prediction is jimmy and stuart struggle bigtime

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 23 September 2010 14:57 (fifteen years ago)

I always like the look of Tremlett, with his trousers hoiked up his long-legs and his large upper torso and long-ish sideburns, when you see him running in he looks rather Victorian.

But perhaps lacks the zip I always feel he should have.

the too encumbered madman (GamalielRatsey), Thursday, 23 September 2010 14:59 (fifteen years ago)

Bresnan though? Is that wise?

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Thursday, 23 September 2010 15:03 (fifteen years ago)

We've been moaning about Bresnan in the office today, gets wickets in limited overs games, but really doesn't convince as a Test bowler. It's just not a particularly convincing seam attack, so you wonder who else there is, really. I suppose Shahzad.

the too encumbered madman (GamalielRatsey), Thursday, 23 September 2010 15:05 (fifteen years ago)

Actually yeah Bresnan is fucking idiocy and if he plays we may as well hand the urn over

acoleuthic, Thursday, 23 September 2010 15:06 (fifteen years ago)

Broad will have a good series IMO

acoleuthic, Thursday, 23 September 2010 15:07 (fifteen years ago)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 23 September 2010 15:13 (fifteen years ago)

Also, Tremlett seems to have discovered a bit of extra fire, and is exactly the kind of bowler to match up against the Australian quicks

sydney is rapidly becoming much more a fast bowler's track

acoleuthic, Thursday, 23 September 2010 15:46 (fifteen years ago)

aha interesting. Do any of the Aussie grounds give much to spinners these days? Adelaide or Perth might be candidates. Would you pick 2 spinners, LJ?

Neil S, Thursday, 23 September 2010 15:47 (fifteen years ago)

http://www.cricinfo.com/ausvpak09/engine/match/406200.html

yeah ok two spinner five-fers in the second innings, but both predominantly of the lower order, one hideously expensive, and the other brought about by (iirc) idiotic batting

the damage = done by quickies

acoleuthic, Thursday, 23 September 2010 15:48 (fifteen years ago)

no I bloody wouldn't

acoleuthic, Thursday, 23 September 2010 15:48 (fifteen years ago)

lj you praying Bresnan isn't needed?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 23 September 2010 21:39 (fifteen years ago)

shahzad should have been in the squad instead of bresnan. tim's got no test bowling pedigree or potential. at least shahzad has a bit of ticker, as the mongrels would say.

the key is which young bowling attack can outdo the other... should be a ripper.

yeah whatever (whatever), Thursday, 23 September 2010 21:50 (fifteen years ago)

Adelaide is becoming more and more spin-friendly. Perth? I bloody well hope not.

PS - Australia to win 5-0.

Are boxing injuries part of the strategy to gives these Aussies more hope or what?

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 26 October 2010 20:22 (fifteen years ago)

Colleague of mine dislikes Anderson so much (esp in Oz) that I think he thought it was divine intervention. Couldn't possibly agree, myself tho.

Weird Al Paca (SeekAltRoute), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 06:00 (fifteen years ago)

Not Ricky Ponting, so you're one up on us no matter what.

Rope-a-dope strategy

Neil S, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 10:40 (fifteen years ago)

curious to see what happens this summer. i think ponting's still got it as a batsman but you can see how being captain has clearly fucked his concentration levels. as geoff lawson said in the paper the other week he makes 50-70ish and looks good doing it, then goes out stupidly. they should just get him to focus on playing and pass the captaincy onto clarke, however this cunning plan has two flaws: 1) relieving a player of the captaincy but having him play still is 'not the australian way', 2) clarke's in rubbish form himself atm.

Coolangatta LOL'd (haitch), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 11:07 (fifteen years ago)

other problems: hussey is essentially past it now (pains me to say it - still <3 u boo), north is a non-entity and so is hauritz. christ knows what form johnson will turn up with. fast bowlers seem to be crocked with increasing regularity. think i would bring back hughes, shuffle watson down, get rid of north. drop hauritz and bring krejza, but only if ponting's not captain.

still if england open up with str8 fukkn garbage like harmison's first ball at the gabba in '06, it'll be 5-0 all over again

Coolangatta LOL'd (haitch), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 11:16 (fifteen years ago)

think i would bring back hughes,

bahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

acoleuthic, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 11:25 (fifteen years ago)

in order, the next cabs off the rank are

khawaja
smith
finch
some others, possibly including nic maddinson and ed cowan, possibly even including the back-in-form BABY BOOF
hughes

acoleuthic, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 11:27 (fifteen years ago)

even andrew mcdonald has a better chance of a recall. hughes played for middlesex last season, averaged about 10. the guy's shot.

acoleuthic, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 11:28 (fifteen years ago)

I'd love to see Merv back too.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 11:28 (fifteen years ago)

would be suprised if they bought in any of those dudes lj, this is the australian selection panel. they only deal with what they know!

Coolangatta LOL'd (haitch), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 11:35 (fifteen years ago)

next in line is probably jaques, because lol NSW favouritism

Coolangatta LOL'd (haitch), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 11:37 (fifteen years ago)

jaques is not a factor. smith and khawaja have been in recent test squads! surely THAT is what the selectors know.

acoleuthic, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 11:46 (fifteen years ago)

besides, they're both NSW anyway :D

acoleuthic, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 11:47 (fifteen years ago)

why they didn't play smith in india i'll never know. would've done better than the totes ineffectual hauritz.

oh i know it's because ponting can't use spinners effectively if they're not warne.

Coolangatta LOL'd (haitch), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 12:24 (fifteen years ago)

smith for north will happen after like 2 Ashes tests

acoleuthic, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 12:45 (fifteen years ago)

haha maybe 4

acoleuthic, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 12:45 (fifteen years ago)

acoleuthic, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 04:47 (fifteen years ago)

and yet averaging-about-50 xavier doherty is named, as are two injured quicks

acoleuthic, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 04:49 (fifteen years ago)

i mean sure there's a nsw bias but playing an entire nsw seam attack really isn't australia's worst option - i don't see other quicks pulling up many trees, or any spinners at all. smith at least has guts, o'keefe looks like a tough customer too. oh they're nsw

zvookster, Thursday, 25 November 2010 03:08 (fifteen years ago)

and yeah, he used to average nearly 60 with the ball in top-level four-day cricket, but he's been down around 30 for the past ten games, and he obviously gives it a rip, so he's presumably an improvement over Hauritz. whether he turns out to be their answer to Swann remains to be seen - he doesn't seem to have Swann's dip, accuracy or variation, but crucially he does turn it and hit a good area

xanthos? hmm will have to get on the case haha

idk, seems like the poms can potentially bat almost all the way down - whereas the convicts run out of form at...4? of course it is the ashes in australia so maybe they'll buck up just to stick it to u guys

zvookster, Thursday, 25 November 2010 03:32 (fifteen years ago)

one gets the feeling that while England have the (far) stronger bowling, Australia's bowling will always have enough to nibble back at England's batting just when it looks like running away with it

I don't think England will let Australia's batsmen run away with it either. although their top 6 has a formidable reputation. I think Katich will be the hardest to shift

England's lower-order is pretty handy these days; only really Finn can't bat, and he can block

Prior vs Haddin will be an interesting subplot - backing Prior for the better series

I like to be a cynical moaning bastard as much as the next man but I think day 3 of the 1st Test is a bit premature to start throwing the tomatoes.

I'll always remember that fruit salad (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 27 November 2010 11:05 (fifteen years ago)

And the 1st test isn't over either.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 27 November 2010 11:08 (fifteen years ago)

I meant in the 1st Test really, hopefully this mob will not turn out to be as spineless as some of their predecessors. But Strauss out third ball, Hussey (who couldn't hit a cow's arse with a banjo going into the Test) + Haddin accumulating the biggest stand in the Gabba's (test match) history - you've gotta laugh.

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Saturday, 27 November 2010 11:09 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah the acid test for me is whether they choke tonight/tomorrow.

Good to see us fight, still, like everyone else, wary of 1 wkt bringing a collapse as usual, but I doubt anyone thought we would only lose 1 wicket today unless it rained! Great stuff. Strauss seemed determined to get out though! Well played cooky cuz I thought all this year he should be dropped. But lets not get carried away with trying to win. basically all-time lol @ aus

underrated aeroflot disasters i have wikisearched (acoleuthic), Monday, 29 November 2010 04:05 (fifteen years ago)

It looked a surefire win for them tbf. But wow at what happened.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 29 November 2010 04:09 (fifteen years ago)

This will hurt them more than Cardiff because I think they will panic and bring in 3 or 4 players. So they need to get to 150/200-0 or something. Which could happen on this pitch .

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 29 November 2010 04:10 (fifteen years ago)

The difference to me is that England didn't bowl badly, jimmy was quite brilliant & unlucky, but the Aussies were really really ragged today which is not something I can remember them being since '85.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 29 November 2010 04:13 (fifteen years ago)

I like Hilfenhaus a lot, but the others were poor (apart from siddle in 1st innings obv)

Still, it's only gonna be a draw, maybe the oz selectors will give em one more chance.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 29 November 2010 04:14 (fifteen years ago)

that wide from johnson that went for 4 but was given as byes to haddin's disgust was harmisonesque. I can imagine KBP's rage at that moment.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 29 November 2010 04:16 (fifteen years ago)

517-1 totally makes up for the 1st test in 89 btw. Glad to get rid of that one!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 29 November 2010 04:20 (fifteen years ago)

iirc atherton & malcolm were brought in for debuts in the 2nd test & the Aussies laughed at Malcolm. 2 years later he was a totally different bowler.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 29 November 2010 04:21 (fifteen years ago)

ohh broad gets Katich. Here comes a skipper under pressure.

eh can't complain baot this result

yuoowemeone, Friday, 3 December 2010 08:02 (fifteen years ago)

What was going between Ponting and Strauss as they walked off?

Jack BS, Friday, 3 December 2010 09:23 (fifteen years ago)

the dying spirit of australian cricket

gospermaban sim gishel (acoleuthic), Friday, 3 December 2010 09:39 (fifteen years ago)

Well, let's not get ahead of ourselves here but this is almost as funny as England's 2018 World Cup bid failure

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Friday, 3 December 2010 09:42 (fifteen years ago)

I said something on the bid thread about supporting our real lads now in the sweet uncorrupted game of cricket - I and my associate here stand by that now

gospermaban sim gishel (acoleuthic), Friday, 3 December 2010 09:44 (fifteen years ago)

Let's keep Fatboy Cameron out of it for as long as possible tho

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Friday, 3 December 2010 09:45 (fifteen years ago)

thought the "uncorrupted" bit was a joke tbh

absinthe of malithe (Noodle Vague), Friday, 3 December 2010 09:46 (fifteen years ago)

Wanna bet?

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Friday, 3 December 2010 09:52 (fifteen years ago)

Not until I've phoned this guy

absinthe of malithe (Noodle Vague), Friday, 3 December 2010 09:53 (fifteen years ago)

I'm going to have to take necessary disciplinary steps on you two

gospermaban sim gishel (acoleuthic), Friday, 3 December 2010 10:07 (fifteen years ago)

So can anyone tell me what Punter was on about to Strauss at the end of play? Presumably the unfairness of it all?

Neil S, Friday, 3 December 2010 14:27 (fifteen years ago)

"At least you didn't get the World Cup, ya Pommy baaaaaaaastard"

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Friday, 3 December 2010 14:31 (fifteen years ago)

bbbut Strauss is a Saffer!

Neil S, Friday, 3 December 2010 14:32 (fifteen years ago)

LOLstralia. Is there a highlights reel somewhere online?

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Friday, 3 December 2010 14:34 (fifteen years ago)

I thought Strauss was more of the english parents who worked out there and he was born there variety rather than the pietersen/trott no english links at all.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 December 2010 18:16 (fifteen years ago)

pietersen and trott have english links fwiw

gospermaban sim gishel (acoleuthic), Friday, 3 December 2010 18:54 (fifteen years ago)

parents though?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 December 2010 18:58 (fifteen years ago)

I think he is eligible through his tattoo.

AlanSmithee, Friday, 3 December 2010 19:02 (fifteen years ago)

Anyway, Since I, along with a good few others on this thread, am Scottish, so I don't give a fuck if England plays saffers or whatever as long as they're good enough.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 December 2010 19:42 (fifteen years ago)

Adelaide time is confusing

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Friday, 3 December 2010 23:43 (fifteen years ago)

let's have day 1 mark 2

xavi hoarder type (whatever), Saturday, 4 December 2010 00:02 (fifteen years ago)

god aren't youse even gonna put up a fight

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Saturday, 4 December 2010 06:04 (fifteen years ago)

embarrassing

caek, Saturday, 4 December 2010 08:45 (fifteen years ago)

a long way to go

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 4 December 2010 08:49 (fifteen years ago)

England are at where the Aussies were a week ago. Dont get cocky, you know Ponting & Clarke are able to score big, Hussey is getting impossible to get out, and y'know their openers aren't that bad. Cant defend their bowlers though..

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 4 December 2010 08:51 (fifteen years ago)

Only one I'd fear is Tait, is he out injured?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 4 December 2010 08:51 (fifteen years ago)

in two posts you have successfully described why England will win this Test and the Ashes

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Saturday, 4 December 2010 09:04 (fifteen years ago)

I still rate their batting. Ponting wont be gotten out for a duck again. Still, im buzzing with the score just now. Hopefully the pitch will turn and swanny will return to form. If he does, we will win.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 4 December 2010 09:43 (fifteen years ago)

he was pretty good in the first innings tbh

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Saturday, 4 December 2010 09:45 (fifteen years ago)

doherty otoh has 3 days' international cricket remaining and I suggest that he enjoy them

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Saturday, 4 December 2010 09:46 (fifteen years ago)

Hauritz is definitely the Aussies best spinner but I get the feeling Steve Smith will get picked due to his batting, and that really is going down the old england route of picking bowlers due to their batting not bowling ability. It's much harder to take 20 wkts that way.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 4 December 2010 10:02 (fifteen years ago)

Steve Smith would be a better pick than Hauritz. He plainly has the guts for Test cricket and he'd shore up their lower order. Australia's best spin options are among their batsmen anyway.

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Saturday, 4 December 2010 10:03 (fifteen years ago)

But really you cant go chopping & changing two tests in a row. That really is old England, and it never worked for us. Leaves players with no confidence. Don't think Ponting has any say though, looks like he keeps getting overruled by selectors, another recipe for disaster. Ponting is the one who will take any flak though, but i'd be looking at the selectors if you ask me. What the hell have they been doing for the past 18 months?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 4 December 2010 10:04 (fifteen years ago)

Australia need to make changes, and fast. This lot won't help them get anywhere. They need to get in players with bottle like Smith. A really bold call would see them drop Clarke/North and call up someone like Cameron White.

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Saturday, 4 December 2010 10:07 (fifteen years ago)

Doherty means they're effectively playing with 10. He's considerably worse than Paul Harris and we all know what was said about him by literally every pundit ever (before he started taking a few wickets)

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Saturday, 4 December 2010 10:08 (fifteen years ago)

we need to stop playing this series and find some more challenging opposition

absinthe of malithe (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 4 December 2010 10:15 (fifteen years ago)

England 834 for 3

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Saturday, 4 December 2010 10:18 (fifteen years ago)

Man oh man can't wait to tape the highlights and watch those dropped catches on a loop.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 4 December 2010 10:27 (fifteen years ago)

No wonder the barmy army keep singing "are you england in disguise".

I think the Aussie selectors just assumed the same old England who aren't mentally strong and who collapse under pressure would show up, and when we had a bad first innings last week they were not prepared for a fightback. Now they're struggling and panicking by changing their team around a la old England. Nothing has been won yet, still 3 days of this test to go, but the Aussies seem to be scared. They really need a big 2nd innings to regain the momentum, but first they have to fight back tomorrow. England didn't bowl badly in the Aussies first innings ,they just had 2 batsmen bat brilliantly and jimmy was unlucky. If the Aussies are ragged bowling in the 3rd day then that could be a killer psychological blow.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 4 December 2010 10:45 (fifteen years ago)

(referring to the aussies big 1st innings last week)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 4 December 2010 10:46 (fifteen years ago)

We haven't been "Old England" since the day of Nasser Hussain in about 2001. The last 10 years have been pretty good apart from a couple of series Down Under and Flintoff/Pietersen's evil reign as captain but thankfully that was short.

All has been built up to this. Expecting a 15 day blitz leading to a 4-0 series win.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 4 December 2010 11:07 (fifteen years ago)

hoping for 5 ties tbh just for the lullery

absinthe of malithe (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 4 December 2010 11:09 (fifteen years ago)

We haven't been "Old England" since the day of Nasser Hussain in about 2001. The last 10 years have been pretty good apart from a couple of series Down Under

Those series Down Under were enough to convince the Aussies nothing much had changed

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Saturday, 4 December 2010 11:16 (fifteen years ago)

It would be funny if good ol' English rain came down and stopped this but when Cook is scoring tons for fun and Anderson is a dangerous bowler its gonna be asking for a lot.

Only need Swann to improve to Jim Laker levels now. xp = but we've won a couple of times at home, so its a bizarre world to be living in.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 4 December 2010 11:17 (fifteen years ago)

One thing will never change, england never get rain to save them, only stop them, so it would be damn typical.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 4 December 2010 11:19 (fifteen years ago)

england never get rain to save them

whabbout that brisbane thunderstorm in 97

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Saturday, 4 December 2010 11:25 (fifteen years ago)

xp = but we've won a couple of times at home, so its a bizarre world to be living in.

... true, but been not so much beaten as annihilated in between winning those two series in England... (silly) assumption seems to be that English legs turn to jelly on stepping off the plane at wherever they step off planes in Australia... not sure about South African legs

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Saturday, 4 December 2010 11:25 (fifteen years ago)

also I think England sealed a drawn game in Sri Lanka a few years back with a bit of rain assistance when 9 wickets down

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Saturday, 4 December 2010 11:26 (fifteen years ago)

97 is a hell of a long time ago!!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 4 December 2010 11:40 (fifteen years ago)

yeah just ask Ricky Ponting

absinthe of malithe (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 4 December 2010 11:56 (fifteen years ago)

Just watched the highlights. Extraordinary effort from Cook, and Pietersen's looking in good nick- I think he could score a big century here. Australia should be very worried IMO.

Neil S, Saturday, 4 December 2010 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

I hope this is a sign of a new mature KP not going to a 100 with a big hit (no doubt i'll be on here complaining about him chucking his wicket away soon)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 00:27 (fifteen years ago)

Even in a post-Cook innings, Pietersen is stepping it up and up. That shot off Bollinger to midwicket...my god

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Sunday, 5 December 2010 00:46 (fifteen years ago)

"that is a...fit sportsman"

mark nicholas on kevin pietersen, just now

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Sunday, 5 December 2010 01:26 (fifteen years ago)

hes no worse than the others tbh

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 01:48 (fifteen years ago)

wow north spun that a long way. Swanny's eyes musta lit up there.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 01:49 (fifteen years ago)

he's abominable, like monty panesar w/o a wicket-taking option

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Sunday, 5 December 2010 01:49 (fifteen years ago)

north >>> him

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Sunday, 5 December 2010 01:50 (fifteen years ago)

Pietersen should be thinking 250+ here, and England should be looking for 650ish, declare and have an hour or so bowling this evening.

Neil S, Sunday, 5 December 2010 02:12 (fifteen years ago)

it feels weird to be thinking along these lines, but that is what *should* happen. But who knows what will happen. Reckon it may be worth staying up all night to enjoy though. Will decide at tea I guess depending on how its going.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 02:26 (fifteen years ago)

I'm feeling pretty good at the moment, am going to stay up until 3.30 and review then...

Neil S, Sunday, 5 December 2010 02:27 (fifteen years ago)

i was up at 9 today after going to bed at 12 last night and missing everything bar the strauss wicket. but i had an hours nap this evening so 5am shouldnt be a problem i think. then we'll see.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 02:29 (fifteen years ago)

was it 158 kp used to get out on all the time?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 02:33 (fifteen years ago)

(ie twice)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 02:34 (fifteen years ago)

3 time I believe...

Neil S, Sunday, 5 December 2010 02:34 (fifteen years ago)

mind you, for the past 18 months i was missing kp making 158, he wasnt getting passed 58!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 02:34 (fifteen years ago)

damn was hoping colly would find some form

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 02:50 (fifteen years ago)

he looked pretty good for that 42 tbh

but yes time for some negativity

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Sunday, 5 December 2010 02:52 (fifteen years ago)

Bells in good nick and prior still to come. Hopefully they can fill their boots for some confidence which might be needed in other matches when we dont bat as well.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 02:53 (fifteen years ago)

you think bell will be negative?
Bell is a fine fine player when he is in form and plays his shots. I just think #3 wasnt for him. Hes better at 5 or 6.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 02:54 (fifteen years ago)

well that wasn't negative!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 02:55 (fifteen years ago)

yeah sheesh we get to watch bell and pietersen now

aussies about 2 b crucified beyond their wildest imadge

hahahaha god well done for getting what I was talking about

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Sunday, 5 December 2010 02:56 (fifteen years ago)

clue: 'time for some negativity' did not refer to ian bell

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Sunday, 5 December 2010 02:56 (fifteen years ago)

we're slipping guys, only 500-4 instead of 500-1 ;)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 03:52 (fifteen years ago)

fuck it'll be 500 all out next time

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Sunday, 5 December 2010 03:53 (fifteen years ago)

I'm drooling over those 2 shots by Bell just now.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 04:02 (fifteen years ago)

When he's ON, he's awesome to watch, so fluent & stylish, but when he's OFF, he's hopeless. Glad we're getting this Bell.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 04:03 (fifteen years ago)

and that michael clarke

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Sunday, 5 December 2010 04:06 (fifteen years ago)

definitely, but I cant believe his class wont come through like Hussey did. Hence we gotta win this test while on top.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 04:09 (fifteen years ago)

kp struggling a bit with his hamstring (so are a couple of aussies)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 04:17 (fifteen years ago)

Botham says KP should stop running singles and just whack it out the ground instead.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 04:17 (fifteen years ago)

ground staff ready to bring covers on, looks like rain is a coming

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 04:19 (fifteen years ago)

200 not out for KP! The king is back!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 04:22 (fifteen years ago)

and you never doubted him for a second

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Sunday, 5 December 2010 04:23 (fifteen years ago)

haha. Its just so great to see him not doing silly things and getting out. Responsible KP I like.

I wasn't sure if he'd come good in this series but I knew he would eventually, he's too good. But i dont believe even you thought he'd make a double ton before this test started.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 04:26 (fifteen years ago)

btw wtf are all the Aussies? They were all over us last week on the 1st couple of days.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 04:27 (fifteen years ago)

That's the 13th double century by an English batsman against Australia - seven of those have been scored down under with Wally Hammond notching a whopping four.

Musta been one hell of a player.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 04:36 (fifteen years ago)

I said I'd stay up if KP was still batting, so I guess I'm staying up. I expect, weather permitting, we will declare with a 400 lead and have a bowl, tho with clouds the Aussies will go for bad light, so if that's the case, bat on and grind them into the ground.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 04:44 (fifteen years ago)

I think we lost Neil, how about you mr J?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 04:44 (fifteen years ago)

here all week

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Sunday, 5 December 2010 04:51 (fifteen years ago)

covers on must be raining. Might not be worth staying up. Will see what they say.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 04:55 (fifteen years ago)

Might be a good time to declare, we have got 551 on the board at Adelaide after all

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Sunday, 5 December 2010 05:01 (fifteen years ago)

haha but theres no warne/mcgrath this time thankfully.
Anyway covers are coming off so I guess im staying up to watch KP bat some more.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 05:30 (fifteen years ago)

hmm raining still

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 05:32 (fifteen years ago)

I guess if we lose an hour or more, we might declare, unless they think the aussies will get bad light so may as well score more runs rather than sit on their bums.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 05:33 (fifteen years ago)

bad light is entirely up 2 umpires in 2k10

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Sunday, 5 December 2010 05:35 (fifteen years ago)

im going to bed, think its over for the day. night all

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 05:41 (fifteen years ago)

KP not so useless for a change! He's got a lot to make up for.

Bell could move up to 5, Collingwood to 6 for the next test.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 5 December 2010 10:18 (fifteen years ago)

^^^I said exactly that on DiS and some fool grouched based on Bell's failures at 3, so I promptly fucked off from their cricket thread. Idiots.

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Sunday, 5 December 2010 10:32 (fifteen years ago)

Collingwood could move "out of the team" and we could bring in Shahzad or Tremlett fwiw

Cap.Obv (acoleuthic), Sunday, 5 December 2010 10:33 (fifteen years ago)

lol yeah was gonna say

absinthe of malithe (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 5 December 2010 14:30 (fifteen years ago)

Here's some good news : "Forecast for Monday. A few showers, chiefly in the afternoon and evening. A possible thunderstorm
after midday."

Reel Around The Fountain Smokey BBQ Sauce (SeekAltRoute), Sunday, 5 December 2010 19:31 (fifteen years ago)

So this is what it's like to feel...English.

Reel Around The Fountain Smokey BBQ Sauce (SeekAltRoute), Sunday, 5 December 2010 19:32 (fifteen years ago)

I think england are batting on just so katich has to stand around for an hour damaging his achilles even more as he has to be out there if he wants to open. A total bastard thing to do (ricky would be proud, he'd def do it to us)

Though it's probably england had a set total to declare at and wont budge.

Still, a bit of time in the middle for Bell is only a good thing. As long as KP is there i suppose runs will flow, if he gets out, let bell get his 50 and get the aussies in. (if it swings get em in now)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 23:39 (fifteen years ago)

LOL at that shane warne chicken burger advert!!!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 23:39 (fifteen years ago)

awesome lols. the sidescreen changed to an advert for shane warne eating a huge chicken burger advert just as bollinger bowled and KP pulled away just as the ball was about to be bowled and he had to go over to bollinger to explain.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 23:42 (fifteen years ago)

oh man that was great

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 23:46 (fifteen years ago)

one more test!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 23:46 (fifteen years ago)

ffs put them in NOW

xavi hoarder type (whatever), Sunday, 5 December 2010 23:50 (fifteen years ago)

prior out but being reviewed for the hell of it

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 23:51 (fifteen years ago)

if out i hope we declare

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 23:52 (fifteen years ago)

not out. didnt expect that, but it was missing leg stump.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 23:53 (fifteen years ago)

hes just gonna get the same ball everytime now tho

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 23:53 (fifteen years ago)

aus weather forecasting is pretty good in my experience, so get aus in to bat now please because assume 1-2 sessions already lost.

xavi hoarder type (whatever), Sunday, 5 December 2010 23:55 (fifteen years ago)

we lead by over 300, we're nearly at 600, what is the point of carrying on?

xavi hoarder type (whatever), Sunday, 5 December 2010 23:55 (fifteen years ago)

surely not the thought that we don't want to have to bat twice on this wicket? if it's to make 50 runs what's the problem?

xavi hoarder type (whatever), Sunday, 5 December 2010 23:56 (fifteen years ago)

im guessing we declare at 600

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 5 December 2010 23:59 (fifteen years ago)

i think eng just want to make sure they start the day on the up and demoralise the aussies a bit. I can see the thinking behind it

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 6 December 2010 00:00 (fifteen years ago)

either a 350 lead or reach 600

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 6 December 2010 00:02 (fifteen years ago)

600 up but no declaration so dunno whats going on. silly considering the forecast. its not like we will bowl them out today as the pitch is still good and need all the time we can.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 6 December 2010 00:06 (fifteen years ago)

Still, its good fun watching England throwing the bat about. Must enjoy it while we can, the Aussies must improve (esp if this is a draw and its still 0-0)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 6 December 2010 00:07 (fifteen years ago)

If bell gets out im sure we will declare

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 6 December 2010 00:08 (fifteen years ago)

oh here we go. in they come

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 6 December 2010 00:11 (fifteen years ago)

a lot of pressure on swann, wonder how he will deal with it.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 6 December 2010 00:12 (fifteen years ago)

no pressure on swann at all methinks.

xavi hoarder type (whatever), Monday, 6 December 2010 00:14 (fifteen years ago)

aussies would swap all their bowlers for ours on form right now. all we have to do now is - to quote the aussie mantra - execute our skills, and we'll win the test. all australia have to do is bat deep and play for the weather.

xavi hoarder type (whatever), Monday, 6 December 2010 00:16 (fifteen years ago)

New ball is the key. No wickets = a struggle to get em out. Get a couple and swanny can really attack.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 6 December 2010 00:21 (fifteen years ago)

my prediction = draw

xavi hoarder type (whatever), Monday, 6 December 2010 00:25 (fifteen years ago)

rain or good batting?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 6 December 2010 00:26 (fifteen years ago)

Pitch is still flat, jimmy's being attacked by the batsmen and no movement or spin yet. I think it will spin more against the right hander.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 6 December 2010 01:11 (fifteen years ago)

oh well bed calls

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 6 December 2010 02:06 (fifteen years ago)

Frank O'Cotsoe (haitch), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 01:09 (fifteen years ago)

If harmison bowling *that* wide 4 years ago summed up England then this shambles sums up Australia in this match

0053
Aus: 300-9

As if there wasn't enough entertainment for England fans, Siddle spanks a drive off Swann right at Doug Bollinger, who falls flat on his backside attempting to back out of the way of the ball's path. Cringeworthy grins from both bowlers.

Bollinger didn't even run so siddle had to run back again without getting a run.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 01:09 (fifteen years ago)

bollinger's running between wickets is a thing of slapstick

Neil S, Saturday, 18 December 2010 14:54 (fifteen years ago)

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 26 December 2010 04:03 (fifteen years ago)

How has Bresnan bowled?

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 26 December 2010 04:04 (fifteen years ago)

Bresnan has been accurate, a hint of movement. Both wickets with wider ones that got chased. Tremlett and Anderson been superlative. Not much movement on offer at all, but they've hit the right areas and the edge over and over again. Remarkable performance, really.

acoleuthic, Sunday, 26 December 2010 04:08 (fifteen years ago)

One of my dreams has been to see England score a partnership of 300 (to avenge 1989 when they were 330-0) and to bowl em out for under 100. Don't let me down!

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 26 December 2010 04:15 (fifteen years ago)

We're only halfway there. But we're halfway and roaring forward. Down to the batsmen...

There we go!!!

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 26 December 2010 04:16 (fifteen years ago)

Part of me is highly encouraged by the fact England had to bowl SO well to do this. Really not extravagant movement. Australia need a bowling performance for the ages.

acoleuthic, Sunday, 26 December 2010 04:17 (fifteen years ago)

Johnson is certainly good enough to do it.

Great Eng have retained the Ashes but piss poor in terms of actual cricket right? It seems that only Eng or Aus turned up at any given day. No one doing anything extraordinary to turn anything around. Matches take their course on the first day and run through in a Vulcan logic way to their conclusion.

I'm not going to say I'm feeling empty at victory -- its great Eng crushed them -- but test cricket does need a contest.

I haven't exactly been looking for it, but the English players have clapped Hussey haven't they? I'd hate it if things turned nasty. 2005 was a great hard fought series with great sportsmanship. They need to respect one another. Apparently the Aussies have refused to have a beer or 2 with the English players after the tests. That's quite sad.

I went to bed after the Bell reprieve and just seen the snicko footage. The same thing happened with Michael Clarke earlier in the series so that even things out there. I do feel however that the aussie media are using it to mask the fact they cheated earlier with Cook's "catch".
Anyway Bell deserved that ton, well done belly.

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 12:22 (fifteen years ago)

Rarely does a fast bowler get a warmer reception from the visiting fans than the home crowd, but Mitchell Johnson received a sarcastically enthusiastic greeting from the Pommy contingent after lunch yesterday. The Barmy Army cheered loudly as Johnson was reintroduced to the attack having produced a wayward spell, and as he conceded more boundaries they began the unkind chant coined after his family dramas were aired during last year's Ashes tilt. To the tune of the Addams Family the song goes: ''His mother hates his missus; His missus hates his mother; They all hate each other; The Johnson family; Du du du du (clap clap).'' To Johnson's credit, he finished with three wickets and will start today as Australia's joint leading wicket-taker this series with 14.

PINK PRIDE

The Barmy Army is not known for political correctness, and here's another reason. But this time it's for a good cause. In conjunction with the McGrath Foundation, the army unveiled their own pink shirts with the tag ''England's Barmy Army like boobs so look after yours. Be breast aware''.

Neil S, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 18:54 (fifteen years ago)

I think Kallis & Boucher have more or less sealed the game with their terrific partnership, but even outside the sub-continent, you can't write off the indian batsmen. Tendulkar has been a joy to watch as much as Kallis. I still remember him walking out aged 16 at Lords (on tv sadly) would love to watch a test match some time.

Colly is one of the best ever English fielders, he has an Ashes double hundred and a test average of over 40. I don't think he's ever had the credit he deserves.

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 23:57 (fifteen years ago)

BBC Sport's Oliver Brett

"Paul Collingwood retires with a healthy average of 40.56 - better than Mike Atherton, Alec Stewart, Nasser Hussain and Mike Gatting - and 4,259 Test runs. That puts him 29th in the all-time England list, between Mark Butcher and Robin Smith. He took some of the finest catches among cricketers of his generation, and if he does not bowl in the second innings he will remember his last ball in Test match cricket - it bowled Mike Hussey."

Apparently there is to be a break with tradition and the opposition captain is not to present the urn to the winning captain. So is punter still in hospital? If so, why isn't Clarke doing it?

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 7 January 2011 00:25 (fifteen years ago)

wicket

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 7 January 2011 00:25 (fifteen years ago)

Watson & Siddle have been the Aussies best bowlers (and after Hussey & haddin ,batsmen).

What has happened with Hilfenhaus? He impressed me in 2009, but has been woeful this series. And the aussies ,by not picking Hauritz at the oval, lost the ashes for sure. So why hasn't he played? He's by far the best Aussie spinner. Dude took wickets in England. He seems to suffer purely because he wasn't shane warne.

aaaagh grandstand feed dropping out nooo

goldenarsehat.jpg (Schlafsack), Friday, 7 January 2011 00:46 (fifteen years ago)

if i were australia - which i'm not obv - i'd keep hughes to open but move watson to 5. bring tim paine in to keep wicket. retain khawaja, clarke, hussey, siddle. bring back hauritz. find an opener to partner hughes and a couple of other new bowlers (can't recall the names i've heard in the last couple of months).

it's not drastic season, but in the same way they cut marcus north loose during this series it's time to say quick bye bye to crybaby hilfenhaus, armtwirler smith, newspaperarm johnson. and don't let bollinger, doherty or beer anywhere near a baggy green anytime soon.

and seriously reconsider captain options.

what about haddin?

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 7 January 2011 00:51 (fifteen years ago)

I think Smith has the potential to be a titanic player for Australia with bat and ball - I saw his 77 versus Pakistan and based on that and flashes this series I'm gonna say he'll be a class act with the bat at least - and yeah, he does give it a rip

England's cricket was rarely thrilling btw (the odd episode such as Anderson's more potent spells or the odd lower-order assault aside) - they just with great concentration and great functionality overwhelmed Australia - which is actually kinda awesome and impressive in itself

otm, australia chucks way too much money at its sports training facilities for that to happen

goldenarsehat.jpg (Schlafsack), Friday, 7 January 2011 01:41 (fifteen years ago)

btw those flat pitches in West Indies & Bangladesh are why Englands bowlers have been so good. They are patient, they have good line and length and can handle the frustration and learned from it completely.

xp idk there are so many other sports to choose from, like rugby league

yeah but cricket is deep set in the lifeblood of this country whereas basketball seemed to conquer the west indies mindset

goldenarsehat.jpg (Schlafsack), Friday, 7 January 2011 01:43 (fifteen years ago)

btw why the fuck are there 7 ODI's? boooooooooring. 2 T20's and 3 ODI's are more than enough.

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 7 January 2011 01:44 (fifteen years ago)

trescothick is the only player who can hit a hundred without moving his feet. ever.

been trying to make a pun of his name, 'fleetcothick' is the best i've done so far

goldenarsehat.jpg (Schlafsack), Friday, 7 January 2011 01:44 (fifteen years ago)

the money in basketball & football tore the kids away from Cricket, even when Lara was there. It's really sad because my generation and the one before grew up with them thrashing everyone. Now they have to have flat pitches to avoid losing. Beating the WI in the WI was such a thrill after going close a few times. But now it's flat pitches and empty grounds. Really sad to see.

I think this is it! Aggers is going to do the sprinkler dance! He hands his equipment to Vic Marks... and he's doing it! Vic criticises him for doing it in front of the SCG members rather than the Barmy Army...

MUST SEE

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 7 January 2011 01:51 (fifteen years ago)

the barmies would pelt him with groceries, surely

goldenarsehat.jpg (Schlafsack), Friday, 7 January 2011 01:52 (fifteen years ago)

I think the reason the barmy army were in the ground so early today because they hadn't been to bed yet.

Breaking news - Michael Clarke reveals that he has just told the Aussie players that he's retired from Twenty20 internationals - so Australia need to find a T20 captain from somewhere between now and Wednesday.

From former England star Andrew Flintoff: "I thought the presentation was awful. Forgot Cooky's medal, no champagne, no individual medals. The boys deserved better than that! Disgraceful!"

Not to mention no Ponting. wtf was that about. I really hope the players go into the england dressing room and have a drink. Show the authorities how to do it.

I 'ate you, Win Butler! (King Boy Pato), Friday, 7 January 2011 04:51 (fifteen years ago)

Maybe you've seen this, I hadn't:

Brendon Julian: “So where do we go from here, boys? Junior, what do you reckon?”

Mark Waugh: “Mate, if I was a selector there are at least five, maybe six, of those blokes who’d be looking for something to do next week because they wouldn’t be playing cricket in Perth.”

Damien Fleming: “Such as?”

Waugh: “Mate, Doherty for a start. I mean jeez, we’ve picked a bloke because we don’t know who our spinner should be. Should we seriously pick a guy who has played 10 state-level tests in his life to go up against Pietersen, Cook and those guys?”

Julian: “Bit harsh.”

Waugh: “Bit harsh? He was chucking that many pies at Pietersen he may as well have opened a bakery on days two and three.”

Fleming: “North?”

Waugh: “Gone”

Julian: “Bollinger? Siddle?”

Waugh: “Gone”

Gladstone Small: “Can I interrupt for a minute?”

Waugh: “No”.

Julian: “Junior is on a bit of a roll here, Stone.”

Waugh: “No, I mean fair go, we’ve got it wrong here. If I’m the only bloke not happy that we’ve been rolled for an innings and 70-odd runs on a runway of a pitch and that, let’s be honest, we’re going to have a summer of the Poms handing us our arses in this series then fair go boys, something’s wrong here. What’s Clarke doing after getting out? He’s on Twitter saying sorry for not walking? Mate, if he did that in our side there’d be hell to pay. AB would chuck his Twitter box off the balcony or whatever it is. Sorry for not walking? Jesus Christ, man.’’
