abt 748 ml per can of 4lok, almost as much as in a bottle of hooch. 4lok is 12% alc, hooch is 40% (generally), so yeah, you only have to drink abt 3.5 times the amount of 4lok to get the equivalent vodka effect. strong shit.

A few years back, a drinking buddy of mine accidentally killed himself after a few Jaeger blasters. I cannot more highly recommend against the combination of excessive caffiene and liquor. the first time anyone in my group of friends tried four loko was last weekend. we all agreed that it would make sense to stockpile 30 cans or so for our annual new years vacation/party. two days of emailing about how we really should get on this, one failed trip to a liquor store near my job yesterday (someone had just cleaned them out), and today four loko was banned in my state, effective immediately.

i did take a trip to virginia last fall and bought up 8 cases of the 12% loko so we could try it and bring it back to our addicted friends. at the time, everyone here was crazy about our 6% loko and we sold them to our friends for $5 a piece -- a $2 profit a can - making the trip worth it. although i am a regular drinker of the 6% and I hate to see loko go, the month that we had the 12% loko in large quantity was nothing short of painful, crazed and debauched. once it is taken away from us, i am sure we will look back with nostalgia.

This stuff is awful... a few months ago I drank three cans and several beers and I didn't feel any different than I would have on any other alcohol. It reminds me of the hysteria around absinthe - it's just a strong drink, no more no less.
That being said, the heartburn and the hangover were so bad that I stopped drinking for a month afterwards, I had no desire for alcohol whatsoever. I don't know, why not just drink a bunch of whiskey and coffee? It would taste better...

I thought about going on the hunt for some of this to try, but caffeine doesn't really have an effect on me (way too much Coke as a kid?), so making myself drink sickly sweet malt liquor seems like a bad idea.

I'll buy a 1.5L of Evan Williams instead. At least then the hangover will be earned.

We've been discussing this on another thread but 4Loko is pointless if you have the means to, like, make a tasty and strong drink. If you're going to a party or a show, though, it is wonderful because of it's strength but also it's portability

bay area stores cater more to the neighborhood. That was my experience of Brooklyn as well - I could tell I was in a gentrified area based on what was sold at the liquor store - Park Slope was very different from Bed-Stuy

tried the grape flavor about a year ago & found it offensive. Re-engaged recently via the Watermelon after reading a lot of the posts on this thread & yeah whoever said it tasted like liquid jolly ranchers is otm & it also REALLY REALLY helps yr cause to keep it in the freezer & let it turn into semi-slush, to the degree that it constitutes basically a jolly rancher booze slurpee & then the ott artificiality is suited to a better context. my friends and i homebrewed 4 loko for new years 2011. iirc we used malt liquor, monster energy drink, vodka, caffeine pills, and pulverized jolly ranchers. it worked well--i got so loaded i just wanted to pass out sitting up on a couch, but my heart was racing so fast that i would jerk awake as soon as i started to fall asleep. basically i alternated between wanting to die and actually thinking i was dying.

this recipe seems a lot cleaner and easier than what we did.

White Claw is p. solid. Same ABV as a standard beer at 5%, 100 calories, isn’t loaded with sugar, actually tastes good/light/refreshing.

Sampled some of the other brands and they’re alright, think WC is a slight cut above. Also the Black Cherry is their worst flavor imo, wouldn’t form an opinion off that.

Facebook memories just reminded me of this thread's existence. Reading my old posts here ("grandfatherly advice" lol) is kind of a trip, and makes me glad I got sober a few years ago.

Two stories I never posted itt but should have:

1. On the eve of the ban, a college pal with family money drove all over the state buying thousands of dollars of original formula Lokos, which he planned to sell for $5 a can through Craigslist. Unfortunately the selling part of the plan was less well thought out than the buying part. His first customer was undercover law enforcement, and his entire stash got seized because (detail I forgot to mention) HE WASN'T 21

2. I drank FourLoko sans caffeine exactly once, before a concert at a BYOB venue on the campus of a local private university where open container rules are generally not enforced. Shows at that particular venue usually involved me sponging up all the excess B I could from friends and acquaintances who had BYO'd more than they required, and this night was no exception. By the time the concert ended and the crowd started to disperse, I was in a quasi-blackout slumped over and freezing on the metal fire escape stairs. Campus police were called, but by some miracle they took my keys and left me locked in my Kia to sleep it off, because they "didn't want to take me to jail." 1/10, extremely not recommended (+1 point for staying out of jail)
