I think the 'willing to follow conan to tbs audience' probably watches the daily show more than they watch top-rated dramas but I have no scientific evidence and a sample size of 1

the fake conan/stewart/colbert fight a while back was fun, but not worth repeating. i love the fact that those guys and letterman all have kind of a vague but obvious mutual respect for each other that leno is totally not included in.

i was disappointed, shortly after the conan/leno/letterman dust-up, to see letterman and leno doing a commercial together. it made me think that the whole leno/letterman fued was a put-on and, up to that point, i thought letterman's hostility toward leno was genuine (now i wonder).

nah that was great. i think they do have issues with each other, but are willing to set them aside for a good lol/wtf like that.

That truce lasted exactly one day, by decree of Oprah Winfrey. They've since gone back to hating each other.

Early Amy Poehler. The main part of the bit feels to me like being at a live show at Second City, where they trap you between being uncomfortable with the fact that you, as a part of the audience, are now part of the show, and being uncomfortable with the fact that it isn't all that funny to begin with.

A friend and I were talking about Conan, and specifically that 60 Minutes special, and he kept pointing out that you shouldn't do a "Yes, I'm hurt, and I was screwed, and I'm an underdog," interview along with a "Check out my sweet Brentwood mansion -- there's an outdoor shower near the waterfall by the second pool. Did you know Kobe lives next door?" interview. It was the kind of self-important celebrity interview Conan would mock.

Also, the part where Conan confronts some record store hipsters and introduces his Iranian photographer girlfriend to them, that was a bad move, too.

New show's OK. I guess I'll always miss the old, depressing weirdo Conan. That's what I thought really set him apart back then ... a glossy entertainment show format that had morbid, Scandinavian-esque reflections on death, futility, and the absurdity of it all. I thought entirely too much into that.

One thing I miss from Late Night (and I don't know if he had this with the tonight show, or if he'll get this with his TBS crowd) is when Conan had just a lifeless, no-laughter audience, and everything would bomb the entire night. Those were always kind of fascinating. They were once or twice a year things iirc

i have tickets for next monday. i usually hate tv tapings but i'm actually looking forward to this.

I used to have a sweet, Hollywood Aristocracy connection to getting Conan's Tonight Show tickets (well actually my friend was an NBC page at the time) so that is gone now.

You know, I know that finding out more information about TBS Conan tickets was just a Google Search away, but why do that when I can pretend there's some sort of esoteric knowledge that get bent has?

the producers put out a call for audience members a couple of months ago. there was a lottery system, but i got the date i wanted. i live pretty close to the studio, so they probably figured i wouldn't flake.

i live even closer to universal studios, aka conan's last place of employment. this is on the warner brothers lot in burbank.

Nah, Conan was a dark motherfucker. I remember one bit in the 90s about squirrel suicide. It featured these ridiculously cheap looking stuffed squirrels: one squirrel was on a roof shouting he was going to end it all. Another squirrel was on the ground pleading him not to do it. The stuffed squirrel then "jumped" onto electrically-charged model telephone wires and caught on fire, yelling "sweet release! sweet release!"

Compare that to his latest squirrel bit where it flies around like a rocket and everyone cheers. Not sure what it says about me that I preferred skit #1 when I was 11 years old. See also: potato judge. He sentenced a kid to death and he was only there to get back his stolen bike.

i feel like it is selective memory to think of the conan of a decade ago as that much more goth than the tbs model. i associate potato judge with stackenblocken where the darkest joke was that german people are robotic freaks and clive clemmons' inappropriate response channel which i don't think was that evil because i remember it supplanting monty python stuff as the comedy skit a bunch of dorky boys in pocket t-shirts recreated for my summer camp talent show the summer after 7th grade. wasn't there a suicide joke in the bit that opened his first show on tbs?

It's not that Conan was so much more goth, it's just that the humor was genuinely surreal, stupid, weird or off-color -- nowadays it's just, as teenage girls say, "so random!"

btw conan and his team are straight-up pros. they did the whole show in one go (with commercial breaks), never stopping to re-shoot anything. i'm pretty sure everything made it to air, too -- i'm watching now and i can't think of anything that got edited out.

My brother and I saw him at the library, but it was actually my brother who took the alpha male initiative just to talk to him about how much we love his characters and the show -- and my brother would never do that! He later explained to me that he would never forgive himself if he didn't muster up the courage to go out of his way to talk to him, and I agreed.

Someone who was working on the Tonight Show at the time told me that Conan and his crew were anxious about the Tonight Show ratings from the get-go. There was a fear that the show had a ratings problem much earlier than was reported.

I like the scene in the Conan documentary where Conan realizes that life "on the road" is both difficult and addicting -- and that there will be strangers who want to meet him every night backstage after the show and that surprises and bothers him.

This has to be a really long set-up for a big bit, right?

Considering I've been abroad from the US for 10 years and haven't been able to consume much of the TBS show aside from online clips, I've been weirdly melancholy all day thinking about Conan leaving the weeknight format.

The on-paper concept of Hot Ones seems dumb as hell, but it’s kind of a brilliant idea imo. Disarms and humanizes the interviewee. Reveals elements of their personality you wouldn’t typically see. And it gets there in a playful, harmless way.

Host is a legitimately good interviewer too. Stays out of the way and usually asks interesting questions.

Yeah, he does his research, and knows how to stay quiet.

Quite the “hot” take. He seems a little vanilla personality wise maybe, but he’s a fucking great interviewer. Don’t think I’d ever call him annoying.

I def had the “I don’t care for this type of dude” vibe for the host when I first encountered the show. Quickly warmed to him though. He’s great at his job. Very ego-less and minimal.

He’ll occasionally drop some Nardwuar level deep pull questions on guests. They definitely do their research.

seeing a bunch of Conan clips floating around now and I really do miss him. I wish we still had a late night host who was just a silly guy. Jimmy Fallon tries but he's so bad at it. Kimmel has a good writing staff but Colbert is just terrible and it's frustrating because he's still very funny when he doesn't talk politics
