heart surgery i think?

http://www.fancast.com/blogs/2010/interviews/max-weinberg-open-heart-surgery-influenced-my-decision-to-leave-conan/

I didn't know about the heart surgery until just now, but there's also this: http://www.movieline.com/2010/04/exclusive-does-max-weinberg-want-to-be-jay-lenos-new-bandleader.php

Still, we hear that despite his long association with O’Brien, Weinberg was less than beloved by staffers. When O’Brien’s show was still located in New York, Weinberg would send interns to do gardening work at his house on the New Jersey shore, and would involve staffers in his pay disputes with the network — at one point, even enlisting an intern to tabulate every minute of screen time Weinberg had racked up over two years in an argument for a salary raise. Though several members of Weinberg’s band will be joining O’Brien during his live summer tour, Weinberg himself is conspicuously absent from the list.

When asked to address the matter, an NBC spokeswoman said only, “We are not commenting.” Reps for Leno and Weinberg have yet to get back to us.

I could be totally wrong, but it feels like Conan has realized he's paid his dues and now it's his right to just go batshit on tv for an hour four nights a week. At least I hope so. The more absurd and self-aware this show is, the better.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 15:23 (fifteen years ago)

He's not going to be on 5 nights/week?

Unfrozen Caveman Board-Lawyer (WmC), Tuesday, 19 October 2010 15:29 (fifteen years ago)

Conan O’Brien will begin his run on TBS with some of the biggest names in entertainment and music beginning Monday, Nov. 8, at 11 p.m. (ET/PT). The premiere night of Conan from Stage 15 at Warner Bros. Studios will feature Seth Rogen and a musical performance from Jack White.

The rest of Conan’s premiere week will feature a lineup of special guests, rare performances and longtime friends of O’Brien:

* Monday, Nov. 8 – First Guest Poll winner, Seth Rogen and musical guest Jack White
* Tuesday, Nov. 9 – Tom Hanks, Jack McBrayer and musical guest Soundgarden
* Wednesday, Nov. 10 – Jon Hamm, Charlyne Yi and musical guest Fistful of Mercy
* Thursday, Nov. 11 – Michael Cera, Julie Bowen and comedian Jon Dore

I had absolutely no doubt whatsoever that Jack White would be involved somehow with the premiere show. Those dudes are joined at the hip.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 21 October 2010 15:35 (fifteen years ago)

Wasn't Radiohead the first ever musical guest on Conan's show back in 1993? Should have Mr. Yorke drop in.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 21 October 2010 15:55 (fifteen years ago)

O'Brien's Late Night was rushed into production and debuted on September 13, 1993, with Andy Richter as O'Brien's sidekick. The premiere episode featured John Goodman (who received a "First Guest" medal for his appearance), Drew Barrymore, and Tony Randall.

Zeno, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 12:53 (fifteen years ago)

feel bad for this guy. can't see a TBS show competing successfully with the network's late-night shows.

still, hoping against hope, i.e., i hope conan stomps all over jay "big jaw" leno's ratings.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 2 November 2010 12:59 (fifteen years ago)

a TBS show doesn't need to compete successfully with the networks' late-night shows, that's kind of the point

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 13:07 (fifteen years ago)

i know. i just will feel badly to see his rating lag so far behind leno (and letterman), especially considering the good vibe he had when exiting the tonight show. the TBS show feels like a momentum-killer (tho maybe the time off, and conan's overuse of the tonight show debacle, is a momentum-killer, too).

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 2 November 2010 13:09 (fifteen years ago)

i think it will be great just BECAUSE he moved to TBS = (more balls).

Zeno, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 13:09 (fifteen years ago)

yeah! i actually hadn't considered that, but it makes sense.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 2 November 2010 13:10 (fifteen years ago)

the other day i was arguing on twitter with this guy who was SO sure that the whole Daily Show/Colbert rally was done entirely as a way to shore up support and get attention because they're worried about competing with Conan, which seemed like a bizarre theory to me.

man, the opening was like 1000x funnier than the tonight show opening

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 November 2010 04:04 (fifteen years ago)

the whole conan/leno thing seems even more absurdly ridiculous in retrospect but it's kind of a thrill to have him back on tv

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 November 2010 04:05 (fifteen years ago)

Larry King cameo made me spit out my drink, even though Larry King gags are patently obvious at this point.

I can't stress enough how important it is that Andy Richter is back on the couch. That was always the weirdest part about them on The Tonight Show. Andy just stood behind his podium all night.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 04:26 (fifteen years ago)

yeah it's good to have Andy back where he belongs

some dude, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 04:55 (fifteen years ago)

Glee girl excepted, I think tonight was all about Conan just hanging with bros he knows.

Tom Hanks should be good tomorrow night.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 04:57 (fifteen years ago)

Hanks shoulda been night 1, maybe he was just like "monday's no good for me, let's do tuesday"

some dude, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 05:01 (fifteen years ago)

wasn't he first guest on the tonight show? maybe they wanted to just change it up

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 November 2010 05:02 (fifteen years ago)

still don't get why they decided this should be on at the same time as the daily show and colbert

iatee, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 05:02 (fifteen years ago)

So you can experiment with your DVR settings, obv.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 05:04 (fifteen years ago)

Because Comedy Central repeats The Daily Show and Colbert about four times each over the course of the day?

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 05:04 (fifteen years ago)

real answer: there's no reason to put your late night show on at 11:30 or 11:35 if you're not on a channel that has local news

some dude, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 05:05 (fifteen years ago)

yeah but 10 pm!! wtf is on at 10 pm? nothing

iatee, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 05:06 (fifteen years ago)

they're gonna replay conan at the same rate too

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 November 2010 05:06 (fifteen years ago)

We all saw how well that worked for Jay Leno, der.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 05:06 (fifteen years ago)

i wonder how much overlap there is b/w the two audiences anyway

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 November 2010 05:07 (fifteen years ago)

yeah but 10 pm!! wtf is on at 10 pm? nothing

― iatee, Tuesday, November 9, 2010 12:06 AM (2 minutes ago) Bookmark

10pm is 'prime time' and lots of top-rated dramas are on then duh

some dude, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 05:10 (fifteen years ago)

I think the 'willing to follow conan to tbs audience' probably watches the daily show more than they watch top-rated dramas but I have no scientific evidence and a sample size of 1

iatee, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 05:13 (fifteen years ago)

Is this show gonna be on Hulu?

jaymc, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 06:06 (fifteen years ago)

Good question. They don't appear to have a page for it, and if you go to /conan you get the Conan the Adventurer show.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 07:45 (fifteen years ago)

i thought the show was really funny tonight, like funnier than a lot of the tonight show stuff

I stopped watching Conan regularly around 2005-2006, but I think they certainly became less frequent and outlandish.

Now I think I've become one of those "Letterman was brilliant in the 80s -- you kids are just getting the scraps now" types of guys. :-(

after that: move on.

it'd be more weird if he DIDN'T make jokes about it. and if his ratings stay strong it won't be self-pity, more defiant.

tbh Leno bitterness has been one of my favorite aspects of CBS-era Letterman, but i don't necessarily know that that look would work as well for Conan. i like the "basic cable" self-deprecation fine, though, he can focus on that instead.

right. it's just that, much as i like it, the leno-bitterness has been thoroughly covered, and at this point, a little of it goes a long way.

maybe o'brien should pick a fight with letterman now.

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 10 November 2010 15:29 (fifteen years ago)

the fake conan/stewart/colbert fight a while back was fun, but not worth repeating. i love the fact that those guys and letterman all have kind of a vague but obvious mutual respect for each other that leno is totally not included in.

deej otm (some dude), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 15:35 (fifteen years ago)

i was disappointed, shortly after the conan/leno/letterman dust-up, to see letterman and leno doing a commercial together. it made me think that the whole leno/letterman fued was a put-on and, up to that point, i thought letterman's hostility toward leno was genuine (now i wonder).

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 10 November 2010 15:42 (fifteen years ago)

masturbating bear is returning?

another al3x, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 16:36 (fifteen years ago)

Conan said something before, I can't remember where I read it, about maybe bringing back old characters anyway, whether or not NBC released them to him. Essentially, his rationale was "are they really going to take me to court of a MASTURBATING BEAR? And if they do, I look forward to it."

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 10 November 2010 16:39 (fifteen years ago)

Although, I wouldn't be at all surprised if his spot on the first show is the last we see of Mr. Bear.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 16:40 (fifteen years ago)

Early Amy Poehler. The main part of the bit feels to me like being at a live show at Second City, where they trap you between being uncomfortable with the fact that you, as a part of the audience, are now part of the show, and being uncomfortable with the fact that it isn't all that funny to begin with.

Point is, Max saves the bit with his earnest badness.

A friend and I were talking about Conan, and specifically that 60 Minutes special, and he kept pointing out that you shouldn't do a "Yes, I'm hurt, and I was screwed, and I'm an underdog," interview along with a "Check out my sweet Brentwood mansion -- there's an outdoor shower near the waterfall by the second pool. Did you know Kobe lives next door?" interview. It was the kind of self-important celebrity interview Conan would mock.

New show's OK. I guess I'll always miss the old, depressing weirdo Conan. That's what I thought really set him apart back then ... a glossy entertainment show format that had morbid, Scandinavian-esque reflections on death, futility, and the absurdity of it all. I thought entirely too much into that.

One thing I miss from Late Night (and I don't know if he had this with the tonight show, or if he'll get this with his TBS crowd) is when Conan had just a lifeless, no-laughter audience, and everything would bomb the entire night. Nah, Conan was a dark motherfucker. I remember one bit in the 90s about squirrel suicide. It featured these ridiculously cheap looking stuffed squirrels: one squirrel was on a roof shouting he was going to end it all. Another squirrel was on the ground pleading him not to do it. The stuffed squirrel then "jumped" onto electrically-charged model telephone wires and caught on fire, yelling "sweet release! sweet release!"

Compare that to his latest squirrel bit where it flies around like a rocket and everyone cheers. Not sure what it says about me that I preferred skit #1 when I was 11 years old. See also: potato judge. He sentenced a kid to death and he was only there to get back his stolen bike.

A B C, Thursday, 2 December 2010 00:52 (fifteen years ago)

i feel like it is selective memory to think of the conan of a decade ago as that much more goth than the tbs model. i associate potato judge with stackenblocken where the darkest joke was that german people are robotic freaks and clive clemmons' inappropriate response channel which i don't think was that evil because i remember it supplanting monty python stuff as the comedy skit a bunch of dorky boys in pocket t-shirts recreated for my summer camp talent show the summer after 7th grade. wasn't there a suicide joke in the bit that opened his first show on tbs?

A B C, Thursday, 2 December 2010 00:58 (fifteen years ago)

Off-topic but the Gravy Lighthouse sketch was a pretty good sign that he's finally "home" again

Square-Panted Sponge Robert (VegemiteGrrrl), Thursday, 2 December 2010 02:32 (fifteen years ago)

It's not that Conan was so much more goth, it's just that the humor was genuinely surreal, stupid, weird or off-color -- nowadays it's just, as teenage girls say, "so random!"

The whimsicality used to be balanced by something else.

Cunga, Thursday, 2 December 2010 03:15 (fifteen years ago)

haha. that bit about the bass clef from tonight -- when conan talked about the couple of people over to the side of the audience that were vocally aghast when learning that the clef was in the wrong place on the staff, he was totally talking about andre and me. this is what happens when the peanut gallery can read music!

My brother and I saw him at the library, but it was actually my brother who took the alpha male initiative just to talk to him about how much we love his characters and the show -- and my brother would never do that! He later explained to me that he would never forgive himself if he didn't muster up the courage to go out of his way to talk to him, and I agreed.

:(

i have been watching some Best Of compilations, man i loved those Clueless Gamer segments he did

the one where he yelled at the creators of Final Fantasy X for being “murderers of time” was so funny

Considering I've been abroad from the US for 10 years and haven't been able to consume much of the TBS show aside from online clips, I've been weirdly melancholy all day thinking about Conan leaving the weeknight format.

Craig Ferguson > Conan O'Brien

it's been nice to see Twitter full of Conan clips. I saw him live a few times and though his comedy is kind of dated he is still a very naturally funny guy

I think Conan on "Hot Ones" might be the first episode I've seen that probably required a pretty steep dry cleaning bill afterward:

This was completely over the top, and also I've realized seeing people talk while chewing and having sauce on their face is something I find deeply unpleasant.

The doctor bit was good comedy, though.

"seeing people talk while chewing"

Clarification: seeing CONAN talk while chewing. It has never bothered me with any of the other 200+ guests.

ⓓⓡ (Johnny Fever), Friday, 12 April 2024 03:57 (one year ago)

this was awesome. he was fucking hilarious

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 12 April 2024 03:58 (one year ago)

I figured Conan would be on eventually. He may have given them the idea:

He's really tearing up the promo circuit for this new travel show. I watched his Paley Center talk with Jake Tapper tonight streaming live and his visit to Jimmy Fallon earlier in the week.

alright, that "can i keep these?" **stuffs half eaten wing into pocket** gag has me going right out of the gate

Couldn't look directly at it but well done

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Friday, 12 April 2024 20:09 (one year ago)

man, fuckin hats off. that is some martyr-level dedication to showbusiness. how increasingly, shamelessly grotesque it gets is part of why it's amazing, c'mon.

circa1916, Friday, 12 April 2024 22:31 (one year ago)

i cannot imagine how painful the aftermath was, intestinally speaking

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 13 April 2024 00:29 (one year ago)

i detest this show, the guy who hosts it is one of the most annoying people ever, and yet i adore conan. probably will still skip

budo jeru, Saturday, 13 April 2024 00:33 (one year ago)

i have no interest in hot sauce, hot wings as a concept largely annoys me but i am weirdly into this show.
no idea why
i do kinda like the host myself, he is more like an earnest popculture podcaster from the Ringer than the bro-y douche you expect to host something as stupid as this

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 13 April 2024 01:36 (one year ago)

The on-paper concept of Hot Ones seems dumb as hell, but it’s kind of a brilliant idea imo. Disarms and humanizes the interviewee. Reveals elements of their personality you wouldn’t typically see. And it gets there in a playful, harmless way.

Host is a legitimately good interviewer too. Stays out of the way and usually asks interesting questions.

circa1916, Saturday, 13 April 2024 16:22 (one year ago)

Yeah, he does his research, and knows how to stay quiet.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 13 April 2024 16:28 (one year ago)

the guy who hosts it is one of the most annoying people ever

Quite the “hot” take. He seems a little vanilla personality wise maybe, but he’s a fucking great interviewer. Don’t think I’d ever call him annoying.

He def has a room of shoes

145 feet up in a Jeffrey Pine (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 13 April 2024 16:40 (one year ago)

I def had the “I don’t care for this type of dude” vibe for the host when I first encountered the show. Quickly warmed to him though. He’s great at his job. Very ego-less and minimal.

circa1916, Saturday, 13 April 2024 16:53 (one year ago)

He’ll occasionally drop some Nardwuar level deep pull questions on guests. They definitely do their research.

circa1916, Saturday, 13 April 2024 17:03 (one year ago)

I credit the team for his research. Does he do it himself?

145 feet up in a Jeffrey Pine (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 13 April 2024 17:06 (one year ago)

can't find out for myself bc I don't have a team, which only adds to my suspicions

145 feet up in a Jeffrey Pine (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 13 April 2024 17:08 (one year ago)

Was surprised that Hot Ones guy was both famous enough to date a porn star and famous enough that he had to break up with a porn star to protect his personal brand.

papal hotwife (milo z), Saturday, 13 April 2024 17:10 (one year ago)

That’s information that I didn’t need to know.

circa1916, Saturday, 13 April 2024 17:14 (one year ago)

having a team cuts both ways

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 13 April 2024 19:06 (one year ago)

seeing a bunch of Conan clips floating around now and I really do miss him. I wish we still had a late night host who was just a silly guy. Jimmy Fallon tries but he's so bad at it. Kimmel has a good writing staff but Colbert is just terrible and it's frustrating because he's still very funny when he doesn't talk politics
