I was under the impression that the sweetener used in Mexican Coke has always varied depending on the prices of cane sugar vs. corn syrup... sometimes sugar is cheaper, sometimes it isn't, and the factories will just go with whatever is most economical. maybe that's horseshit though

but what about mexican pepsi ? and there is now throwback pepsi that uses can sugar to capitalize on this trend.

I found out the hard way I cannot drink much cola anymore. Coke and Pepsi give me a heartburn so intense I think I could start using my own acid to eat the rust off metal. The funny thing is that I don't seem to have that trouble with Mountain Dew Code Red.

According to my brother, who was very stoked to drink lots of cane sugar Jarrito's when he learned he was going on a church mission in Mexico, Jarrito's in Mexico comes in a can and has HFCS. So maybe pick one up down there?

European Coke is made with glucose from sugar beets. HFCS is not much of a "thing" over here.

if you want to know what mexican coke tastes like, imagine making a super-sweet cup of earl grey tea, with like three or four teaspoons of sugar. now transfer that sweet-sugar aftertaste to a coke. it's mostly the aftertaste that's different.

it really does taste like someone dumped white c&h cane sugar powder into your coke. i think shit's nasty but ymmv.

question for those not digging sugar in soda: do you drink a lot of soda in general? "a lot" being 1 or more cans/day. cause I rarely have it and HFCS soda is ridiculously sweet to me and sugar soda is just about right.

Please read the labels carefully; supposedly some kosher authorities are OK with HFCS.

FWIW:

1) A couple weeks ago I had a Mexican coke (meh) at a taco place (A++++++, would eat again). Don't forget that other countries' Coke syrup formulas, apart from having different sweeteners, may have slightly different flavoring.

2) Upthread someone else claimed that glass bottles, as opposed to plastic ones, affect the flavor. Apart from any actual such effects, the experience of drinking Mexicoke from a glass bottle (especially if you've sought it out from a remote bodega versus a convenient grocery store) MAY affect the drinker's perception of what he or she's drinking.

containers definitely affect flavor. but you can get rid of that by pouring from a plastic bottle into a glass or ceramic cup. same with cans -> glass or ceramic cup.

I would be interested in trying regular coke from a glass bottle and comparing

as dayo knows I am a skeptic on a lot of food snobbery otoh I do like mexican coke better or at least I think I do

HFCS coke in a can tastes amazing if you half-way freeze it so the remaining fluid is this concentrated coke serum.

compared to cane sugar mexican coke and other cane sugar colas i find real deal hfcs americana coke to be just crisper, somehow more complex, more of a caramel note, better.

i would probably rather drink a bottle of diet coke, too, though.

diet coke is like mineral water, bitter but no aftertaste, doesn't coat your teeth and kills salty greasy food flavors w/ the quickness
