Not exactly looking forward to this, but I laughed at the venom sucking and the shot of Zooey bound and gagged. Their stated intention is to make something that can be enjoyed as a straight fantasy movie that also happens to be funny - I'm skeptical considering how well they pulled that off with 80s action movies in Pineapple Express (ie. not well at all?), but otoh I think there's more to be optimistic about here - like the absence of Rogen, the surplus of McBride and what appears to be some pretty good sets and costumes.

The whole time I was watching the trailer I was thinking "I can't believe Green went from George Washington to this" but I still lol'ed.

What I love about Green is that he does all these Jody Hill/McBride stoner comedies and stuff, but then also slips in a totally depressing "Snow Angels." Same applies to his awesome DP Tim Orr. It's like setting Malick loose on a Cheech & Ching set.

I find it disappointing that Green is moving as consistently in this direction (Pineapple->Eastdown->This) while seemingly abandoning the direction his previous work was taking, but some of it is pretty lol. That said, this is film that, conceptually, annoys me but I know I'll see it and I hope to lol.

Yeah, but remember, Gukbe, "Snow Angels" came out right around the same time as "Pineapple" and "Eastbound." The latter two (like "Your HIghness," I imagine) are loose and collaborative. "Snow Angels" and his formative stuff are dark auteur works. I imagine the comedies are easy things to squeeze in (squeeze out?) while one of his more serious works gestates. I wouldn't write that side of him off just yet.

Wells is even crazier than Armond White.

I think Snow Angels was made well before Pineapple though, the close release is just distribution interest. He's essentially spent the last 3 or 4 years doing nothing but the stoner/slacker/fratboy/whatever comedy thing.

Although speaking of Tim Orr as someone was above, his work on Shotgun Stories was excellent, and that film feels closer in the vein of what Green used to do.

I'd wait until it comes out before throwing around comparisons like that. I'd say there's a decent chance there will be humour in this that arises naturally from the story rather than a stream of unconnected pop-culture references.

"PIneapple Express" does not describe well, but in practice the movie is hilarious. It's all about the cast and chemistry, so to speak, with McBride every bit the crazy straight-man catalyst as Ferrell.

I ultimately thought that Snow Angels was just ok, but there was some striking aspects of it, particularly the teen romance (better than All the Real Girls in that department too...wish it was the whole film.)

I saw Pineapple Express, and did not think it was funny, but enjoyed it just the same.

People that want to see this movie are more probably thinking 'I want to get blazed and watch Zooey/Natalie/James doing some silly dungeons & dragon type stuff' rather than 'This looks like a great American comedy!'

At first I enjoyed it on a nostalgic level - despite the R it felt very Spaceballs, full of jokes kids could love despite only half understanding - but it got old FAST and by the end holy shit did I not care.

I'm not bothered at all that David Gordon Green has been focusing on studio chuckles - can't blame the guy if he's not jonesing to make another sad portrait of small town life - but the climax of this film was so lifeless it totally shattered my hope that he was doing to film cuz it let him play with effects he'd never get for a sam rockwell dramedy. Or maybe the novelty of CGI spectacle wore off fast.

At this point I've given up on his film career and just enjoy his work on Eastbound and Down.

This had one joke - Danny McBride swearing in a prithee-maiden accent. I liked this joke very much but I kept wondering what they might have done with two or more.
