Having heard loads of stories about people being unable to upgrade to latest Android due to arbitrary manufacturer/carrier limitations, I'm going with iOS. At least everyone who owns a reasonably new iDevice is predictably on the same sw version.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 16 December 2010 00:27 (fourteen years ago)

I have a droid x and iphone 4.

Droid
- handles multitasking and background apps better
- free navigation
- notifications and alerts much more accessible
- a lot easier to configure options on various apps.

iphone
- GAMES
- battery destroys droid by 2 or 3 times (price you pay for all the background processes on droid)
- itunes
- all your apps are front and center (w/ droid you gotta make shortcuts)

my iphone is free but droid is not so that decision is pretty easy. otherwise, it'd be a really tough call but I might still go iphone b/c of GAMES. most the other stuff you can get around with a few clicks.

F-Unit (Ste), Thursday, 16 December 2010 11:35 (fourteen years ago)

"front and center" meaning iOS starts on the app screen. Droid takes one extra click which makes it easier to forget apps you downloaded.

Also big one I forgot - Droid does not have an update all option for apps. Have to do updates one by one.

Android's hardware agnosticism, thus huge range of handsets is difficult to ignore. My fully featured 'droid phone is effectively half the size of an iphone and fits in coin pocket of my jeans. Also cost 1/3 of what a contract free iphone would.

feel like this is indicative of the difference between the two platforms - theres more options w/andriod but none of them have the polish conferred by apples focus

ice cr?m, Thursday, 16 December 2010 19:00 (fourteen years ago)

oh yeah, I mean the iOS is a pretty storming piece of work in most respects but the handset, regardless of how thin it gets, is too big for me to carry around comfortably. Surprises me that apple haven't gone for an iphone mini/nano tbh.

Android can be a bit hokey at times, but I still like it a lot. Also, Google Sky Map is incredible.

My HTC Incredible isn't clunky or hokey at all! It won't fit in a coin pocket, but then that wasn't my primary concern.

I don't know what you mean about taking an extra click to get to apps? You can customize all 6 screens to have whatever you want on them, and each screen holds 12 app icons -- just put your most-used things on the middle/main screen if you want to? I made one screen for games, one for communications, one for internet applications & bookmarks, one for maps and navigation, and am working on one that only holds music-related icons and shortcuts for playlists, plus nice big set of "play," "pause," and playlist navigation buttons that you can mount anywhere on the screen.

Jesus Christ, the apple tree! (Laurel), Thursday, 16 December 2010 19:50 (fourteen years ago)

And I've never paid for a single app; the free ones work fine and are good enough for the time being. I'm sure when I figure it all out and decide which things to cough up 2 or 5 or 10 bucks for, the options will improve even more.

yeah its p clear apple is positioning itself at the high end of the mobile computing/phone market aka appealing to consumers who actually use their devices heavily and are willing to pay for a primo product/ecosystem that works good - whether they capture the top 10% or 30% of the market obvs has a lot to say w/how this whole thing plays out - i wouldnt bet against them ending up w/the slice of the pie they want - especially considering android cant be bothered to get basic shit like software updates in phone payments etc right - rim is even further behind - windows phone 7 seems by all signs to be doa - and no one else is anywhere on tablets/itouch type devices

yeah i mean worrying abt fragmentation and os updates is total nerd shit for people who are lol power users people who buy tons of apps and notice and care abt minute design/usability differentiation aka apples cohort - andriod is succeeding competing on price and ubiquity for people who generally dont care as much and dont use their devices as hardcore - feel like that is how the market will generally shake out

go peddle your bullshit somewhere else sister (Laurel), Monday, 31 January 2011 23:07 (fourteen years ago)

aa here, posting from this account because it's easier to type.

Apple rolls out the same version of the OS to everyone with the same phone model, regardless of network. So if you've got an iphone 4 and you plug it into itunes regularly, you'll most likely have iOS 4 on there and your apps will work exactly as well as they do on every other iphone 4.

Android's all over the place. Your phone model might only be ready for 2.1 and your telco might decide to keep you on 2.1 for six months, meanwhile a load of other people are on 2.2 or 2.3 or even 1.x.

°U° tation (Schlafsack), Monday, 31 January 2011 23:08 (fourteen years ago)

I work for a company that does apps and themes etc and can attest that this is true, and is even worse for BlackBerry.

sofatruck, Monday, 31 January 2011 23:39 (fourteen years ago)

Oh and the other problem with Android is that the telcos get to shit up the home screen with all their self-serving dickhead apps that nobody ever uses. Last non-iphone phone I had was a Nokia that was jam-packed with all the junk Telstra insisted on putting there (sensis/white pages/yellow pages/whereis/1234 or whatever it's called/etc) and I couldn't delete any of it without hacking the handset. Android has the same problem which taken on its own is enough to push me back to Apple.

Apple's not exactly a stranger to forcing apps down people's throats (why can't I delete the sodding stocks app ffs) but at least they do what they're supposed to and at least they're not part of some dumb agenda to spin money out of thin air.

i mean yeah all those super popular linux consumer devices

granted linux is a niche, what I'm saying is that there are stable distros out there, if you need to use linux you know which one to reach for, open platform doesn't necessarily mean total chaos, that's just some FUD thinking there

np just throw a new battery in it

yeah but you can pay $0-$50 for the phone vs $200 for an iphone so still ahead

ignore rims already declining numbers

RIM is getting pressure, granted, and they're gonna have to hustle to hold on to what they have, but they've got possession of the ball, all this "apple can compete in the enterprise" comes from folks who have obv never tried to connect a mac to a hardened windows active directory domain

^ I mean articles like this one get you all excited by starting out saying "Research in Motion's BlackBerry may soon lose its lock on the enterprise market" but then read on and they fess up

Most experts agree that RIM is not likely to disappear from the corporate landscape anytime soon. There are still many corporate consumers who like the look and feel of the BlackBerry. What's more, the company is trying to develop devices that will appeal to consumers, such as the new touchscreen BlackBerry Torch.

So it's likely that RIM will remain a major player for some time. But it will have a lot more competition.

it's just tech journos messing w/ yr head man

my point is most people arent thinking like nbd ill just get another battery theyre thinking this phone sux my battery doesnt work - understanding this level of user experience and not leaning on geek work arounds is why the iphone is better - tho im not sure if google gives a fuck as android is already doing what they want it to - kinda doubt they have institutional fortitude to perfect the situation

i think android will continue to do v well but the iphone will be better and have a more cohesive/robust ecosystem and make more $$$

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 20:35 (fourteen years ago)

xp i didnt say rim would disappear over night, just that theyre toast long term

thats actually a telling user experience distinction - putting a case on yr phone isnt the same as replacing the battery - not that antennagate wasnt a problem for apple - it was but it just wasnt that big a problem

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 20:52 (fourteen years ago)

four months pass...

don't know about anyone else but i'm having endless issues with the wireless connectivity on my samsung galaxy s android. fucking don't if you ever consider.

Ste, Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:55 (fourteen years ago)

In case this helps: since I upgraded to Android 2.3.3 I have to first disconnect the 3G/H data network mode (long press the power button and click the second option) before I activate wifi. If I don't, it acts like my wifi doesn't have any DNS information and can't find any sites for the first couple of minutes. If I deactivate that data mode first, wifi works immediately.

Oh, and battery full or alarm time for a calendar event doesn't seem to beep or vibrate anymore.

Those are the two issues I have at the moment. Both aren't _that_ bad, except when I count on my phone to remind me of something. No beep or vibrate = too late for dentist, etc

StanM, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:18 (fourteen years ago)

(also on Galaxy S btw)

StanM, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:20 (fourteen years ago)

There may be an Android update v2.3.4 on the way, apparently.

StanM, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:20 (fourteen years ago)

My web connectivity has been down since last night, and I got like 35 "message download failed" texts yesterday that were DRIVING ME CRAZY from 3-10pm. Gonna call Verizon shortly and unload.

Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:21 (fourteen years ago)

- if you have bluetooth problems: turn off the phone and remove the battery for +15 minutes. Put back battery, turn back on, try again, should work now.

- message download failed: had that once when someone had sent me a vv big attachment. Too big for phone carrier's mail routers, but allowed by regular internet provider. Deleted the message via a web mail client and after that my phone downloaded everything else. Not Android/Samsung's fault, in my case.

StanM, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:23 (fourteen years ago)

Apparently my phone needed some updates?? I just got off call w cust svc and they seem to have pushed out some changes to my settings that worked fine. Back up now!

That's the second time in about 10 days that I've had connectivity issues, though. Will be angry if that keeps happening.

iOS v ANDROID

ice cr?m, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:42 (fourteen years ago)

how do i upgrade to 2.3.3? is that the firmware? (mine says 2.2)

tried the disabling thing, still doesn't work. yeah its a problem with the dns it seems, i put in the static dns and i did have it working at some point but its just gone again now. pretty atrocious really.

Ste, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:46 (fourteen years ago)

even when it connects finally to my wireless, it just won't send or receieve data or browse the web etc. wtf at this

Ste, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:51 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, it's a firmware update. Can be installed with Samsung Kies (that's the name over here, don't know if it's the same name everywhere.

Do make sure you know the settings for your data connections before you upgrade though, they may dissappear.

These firmware updates generally add new features (use your phone as wireless modem for a portable, for instance) or improvements like battery life or GPS performance.

StanM, Thursday, 16 June 2011 16:52 (fourteen years ago)

For your other problems, try out different settings or channels on your wireless router. changing the channel width from 20, the default, to 40 sped up my phone's connection to it a lot. Using my provider's dns instead of letting the router act as a dns server did too. I don't see why it could work for some people but not others...

StanM, Thursday, 16 June 2011 16:59 (fourteen years ago)

also i think any sort of platform arguments are stupid in the extreme. mac vs pc arguments (like the ones that occur hourly on any music making forum) are seriously pathetic.

whiney g. aimhouse (electricsound), Friday, 30 September 2011 01:48 (thirteen years ago)

Like 100% Apple fanboys talk up everything Apple and con people in buying Apple stuff, but 100% Android fanboys get all weirdly irrational and ignore obvious facts. A good case in point is the Apple v Samsung case atm, where the worst of the Android fanboys insist that Samsung didn't copy loads of Apple stuff, Apple's just being mean etc. idgi.

xp yeah, different platforms suit different purposes and they can co-exist happily and it's all cool.

hi, i need to buy a new phone. i should buy an iphone right? and is the 4s so much better than the 4g (or whatever) that i should wait 10 days for it to be shipped, or should i just cop the 4g cuz it's cheaper + i could have it tonight?

tyga mother (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 January 2012 18:17 (thirteen years ago)

4S: newer proc, better camera (esp better optics), Siri, will presumably have a somewhat longer software update lifespan (tho the 3GS is up to date with iOS 5)
4: $100 cheaper. How much does this $100 matter to you amortized over your two year contract?

I'm way into the Android OS. It's pretty simple and vastly more customizable than iOS. Like, I can make a folder and organize stuff with it. It's sort of ridiculous for that to be a notable feature but it's something you can't do on any iPhone device, and I'm old school enough to really love it.

Has anyone dabbled in app writing / game creation? I don't know much programming but there seem to be a lot of game makers and engines. Are any of them any good? I wouldn't mind putting together a 2d side scroller or something just for fun.
