Don't underestimate the marketing value of moral appeals. See the history of "organic," or "sustainable," or "fair trade," etc. It's an appeal small/local guys can make that the chain/corporate/online retailers can't. I mean, yr not gonna get people to "buy local" for toilet paper or dish soap, probably, because there's mostly no such thing as local toilet paper. But for things where people actually have a choice, I think it can be effective -- especially since there's the pre-existing narrative of "Walmart (or Big Chain X) is evil," which lots of people intuitively believe even if they shop there.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Monday, 20 December 2010 04:56 (fifteen years ago)

Kerm, Monday, 20 December 2010 05:12 (fifteen years ago)

organic is the only one of those that has had much success and its imo more abt personal health - sustainable and fair trade have gotten a lot of press but still seem v niche - i agree that theres an activist shopper segment to appeal to i just dont think its v big - not nearly as large as the cohort that appreciates something really good - of course then you have to make something really good - which is like not easy

Kerm, Monday, 20 December 2010 05:27 (fifteen years ago)

I think quality is sort of inherently implied in the "local" idea -- that local independent stores are more likely to sell you good or interesting stuff than Chain Store XYZ. Which may or may not be true, but I think it's part of the package. I mean, why else would you shop at a local store? If they were just carrying the same stuff as Target but charging 10 or 20 percent more, what would be the point? (The "interesting" part is what ties into the "weird" idea, obv -- that local retailing makes room for oddballs with eclectic tastes in a way that chain retailing doesn't. Which I think is pretty incontrovertibly true. That doesn't always make for good stores, and even when you do get good stores sometimes the people running them are terrible businesspeople and can't keep it going, but it definitely gives you more variety on the landscape.)

this is maybe where we start dealing with the particulars of austin: i used to go to dominican joe's because they only brewed their own coffee, i ate at magnolia cafe because they grew most of their produce in a greenhouse down the street, i shopped at end of an ear because they stocked records by local bands who'd recorded the records at local studios & had them pressed at the local plant. it obviously isn't going to be true in every case in austin, let alone everywhere else that people are arguing for the superiority of local buying, but for the most part in atx 'buying local' actually puts you into a process that's deeply enmeshed with the local economy. there's no inherent good in buying local except that it's more ecologically sustainable, more likely to create or save local jobs that are more likely to be higher paying, & more likely to create a sense of community among people who share a metropolitan living space. but, you know, that's all.

for commodity goods theres minimal prospects of compete w/chains - pretty much only v strong established businesses can - for industries w/large variation in quality its completely doable to have a better product/experience and flourish - comparing ones self to chains in that case just signals impoverished confidence

local businesses are not all dying or doomed, fwiw. I have several friends who own or work at local businesses that, if not necessarily booming, are certainly surviving. I know a guy who sells sorta pricey furniture, and he's really careful not to go head to head with the chains on things he can't compete on. He and his wife stock stuff they think is cool, that nobody else in town carries, and they have three stores now (including one in a big suburban plaza, out in chain-land).

yeah, the city lines are totally arbitrary - like you can walk a handful of blocks and go from Oakland to Emeryville to Oakland to Berkeley. Berkeley does, however, have significantly more cops per capita than Oakland (you want a bullshit ticket, spend time in Berkeley), and better public schools, so there is a bit of a difference between the two.

sarahel, Saturday, 1 January 2011 17:39 (fifteen years ago)

the lines are arbitrary, but they matter

ice cr?m, Saturday, 1 January 2011 17:46 (fifteen years ago)

they definitely matter in terms of city services. Like there's a certain charm to living in an "underdog" city like Oakland, but the civic dysfunction is kinda frustrating. And maybe my neighborhood is "Berkeley-lite" now, but I'd rather have the shittiest car on the block in "Berkeley-lite" than have my battery stolen or windows broken in West Oakland.

oh yeah no doubt there are legal differences, I was mostly just talking on a cultural/functional level...the rich parts of the east bay all seem like the same city to me, the poor parts of the east bay all seem like the same city to me.
