I discovered banana trip because I slice into coins so that I don't have a full banana in every smoothie. Banana never *quite* hardens, just turns into this ice cream-like texture. If you blend it it's even creamier. Lovely.

bananas won't freeze solid so you don't need to pre slice them into coins. just peel them and bag them whole in the freezer - make sure you get as much air out of the bag as possible. the longer you freeze them for the browner they'll go, try not to keep them for more than a week or so, i guess. i use a food processor, you gotta let it run for like 5 mins for ultimate ice cream simulacrum (my blender is a piece of shit, most cheap blenders you can only pulse in 10 sec bursts or the motors burn out).
frozen mango is real good blended in, as well.

tbh I find it easier to chop the banana into chunks at least before freezing -- it breaks down a little easier in the food processor and doesn't put as much stress on the motor.

yeah but you can just break up the whole banana into chunks before throwing it in the blender - that was my point about the banana not freezing solid. plus whole banana = less surface area to brown. xps

― lag∞n, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:45 (thirteen years ago)
i dunno about banana not freezing solid. i'd put one in peel and all by mistake and it came out as a very hard-to-peel bludgeon. i think it would make a good murder mystery ("detective, the vic was bludgeoned to death, but there's no murder weapon!" the dishwasher just smiled to himself and ate his very mushy and damp banana. "well, I guess we'll never solve this case." "hold on a second," said Encyclopedia Brown. ENCYCLOPEDIA BROWN KNEW WHO THE KILLER WAS. DO YOU?)

Vegan ice cream is pretty simple, because the creamy mouthfeel is just whipped & emulsified saturated fat. Coconut oil is about as saturated as dairy fat (and probably similarly unhealthy) and works just fine.

Coconut milk is one of the most fatty, caloric things on the planet. I don't know about coconut-based ice cream, but when I cook with coconut milk I always use the low-fat version and it still adds mucho calories to a meal. It's delicious though.
― Virginia Plain, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 22:00 (thirteen years ago)
coconut milk is of the gods. is super rich & fatty though. a friend of mine who was crazy about it once wanted to eat just the "cream", the solids that separate out if the can sits for a while. was delicious, but we both felt kind of sick after just a bite.

lunch is usually what some might consider a snack. Like half an avocado and some cheese/meat. It's a meal! Calorically/nutritionally.
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 22:48 (thirteen years ago)
Lunch is truly the most boring and utilitarian of meals imo so might as well make it a snack.

In all honesty, I eat every 4 to 5 hours, so if I know I'm not eating dinner until 8 I will prob eat a snack at 4 or so but if I'm not eating until 6/7, I won't have a snack. And if I'm out and about, gah, that is why I need to remember to put almonds in my bag.

Seriously though I don't understand non-snackers. I eat lunch around 12:30 or 1 most days and by 4 I am starving. If I don't have something small then I'd have a headache by 5. Maybe I'm eating the wrong things or at the wrong times or something. idk.

my snack militancy and regulated times btwn meals/snacks is because if i freely snack, i will be in physical pain (nausea due to blood-sugar wackiness and/or digestive inflammation, which i can only describe as a painful tightness that only goes away with time (rather than with some other bodily function...), so pain is kind of a motivator there. so keep having fun with all your snacking, you pain-free lucky bastards.

― just1n3, Friday, 24 August 2012 19:25 (thirteen years ago)
a few notes:
- as someone who used to live next to a weird health food store that made its own banana soft serve, i can assure you that it can be done, and very very very well.
- the tomatoes around here are so good that when i need a snack in a pinch, i cut some slices, drizzle a little olive oil on top, spring a teeeny bit of salt, and voila! fresh!!

yeah there is a world of difference between canned/cooked chickpeas vs raw chickpeas. they're reaaaaaally bland. and they have a diff texture too. it wasn't good. though admittedly the raw hummus we got had no other flavors even attempting to try to make it taste good

ugh. I've been sneaking it here and there, but my intake is way, way down. I stopped drinking a couple weeks ago and I think that I had been compensating for "quitting sugar" over the last few months by steadily increasing my sugar consumption via alcohol.

'Healthy' is a bit of a tricky word.
I try to maintain a pretty even glycemic index level and only let around 20ish% of my daily caloric intake consist of (good) fats. So most of my diet is made up of (good) carbs (and only eat starchy carbs when I'm lifting or running) and protein. I recently lowered my protein intake, so roughly I'm at a daily intake of 50-60% carbs, 20-30% protein, 20% fats. I used to have 'off days' when I can eat whatever, but I stopped that about a year ago, I think. Now I just cheat on around two meals a week, but still, not by much. I never eat fast food or processed foods. I never eat chocolate/candies, pop, processed/bottled fruit juices, etc.
Most of my sugar intake comes from fruits (not counting the carbs that spike my glycemic index levels, as this is more recovery from lifting/running). I eat about 8 pieces of fruits and two multivitamin gummies every day. It can take you much more to get the same amount of sugar intake if you eat a fruit than if you eat a chocolate bar or something.
My fruits (some are starchy/high in sugar but, as all things in diets, it is due to my active lifestyle, meaning this doesn't mean it translates well to another person):
2 bananas4 oranges2 apples1 pear
Sometimes I'll have blueberries and/or raspberries and/or blackberries.
I snack on them during the day, but the starchy (banana, e.g.,) I eat in the morning and one at night (usually after exercising). I also have about 15 raw almonds -- pretty high in fat and calories (if you're calorie counting, which you shouldn't be really). Baby carrots are good to snack on, as well. Any nut is good to snack on but remember they are high in calories and (good) fat, so don't overindulge. I counter this overindulging by having them with fruits, because that will 'deceive' my body into thinking I'm full faster.
Yogurts are healthy snacks, as well (unless you're lactose-intolerant!), just check the nutrition facts label.
That's all that comes to mind at the moment.

googled sugar content in apples and apparently, because of modern production techniques, there's more sugar in apples than there used to be, and eating too many can actually damage your teeth. anyone know how accurate that is?
― Chris, Thursday, 2 May 2013 16:08 (thirteen years ago)
i eat pear slices with havarti cheese sometimes.
― rock 'em sock 'em (Treeship), Thursday, 2 May 2013 16:16 (thirteen years ago)
I should have said, I eat green apples. There is a difference (sugar content).
I've heard citric stuff like oranges also damages your enamel. My dentists have never mentioned anything, and the only people I've heard being worried about it or being criticised for it are fruitarians. This is purely anecdotal, anyway, so you're better off waiting for someone who is knowledgeable on the subject or doing some research.
― c21m50nh3x460n, Thursday, 2 May 2013 16:17 (thirteen years ago)
Apples are recommended for those with high cholesterol. Do green apples and red apples have the same amount of pectin, the ingredient that is useful in keeping cholesterol in check?
― curmudgeon, Thursday, 2 May 2013 16:26 (thirteen years ago)
I found 2 online sites saying green apples were better than red if one has cholesterol issues; and one that said red was better.
― curmudgeon, Thursday, 2 May 2013 16:38 (thirteen years ago)
You need to consult with a specialist or nutritionist.
But Googling yields this: http://www.wildflowers-and-weeds.com/The_Forager/pectin.htm
"Ripe apples contain less pectin, but the level varies greatly from one tree to the next; some varieties are suitable when ripe, while some have virtually no pectin by that time. Over-ripe apples are the worst."
Maybe inquire about taking pectin supplement the next time you're at your doctor's?

I am a bit paranoid about sugar and my diet in general at the moment. I don't have sugar in my tea anymore (in fact I hardly drink tea at all now), and I've replaced chocolate and crisps at lunch with a banana/apple. I'm eating more pasta, eggs, salad and vegetables at lunch now too.
― Chris, Thursday, 2 May 2013 16:41 (thirteen years ago)
Chris, don't be too paranoid. I mean, if you have a family history of things like diabetes, etc., for sure, go see a doctor -- that's #1. Doctors keep track of and monitor your health history for a reason. Getting those stats/numbers helps them give you better advice.
Also, know that sugar is in almost every man-made food. So, yes, always check the sugar content. Check out a fruit chart that shows them from highest sugar content to least. Any berries are perfect (have less sugar) -- the more starchy/'carby' stuff has more sugar (banana, pineapple, etc.).
My approach is this: buy non-fruit/non-sweet things with the least amount of sugar. That way I can micromanage and get a more real number of how much sugar I consume (it is still hard). You'll find a few of those low-fat products have more sugar than the regular ones. Always check the label.
For me, it is a little trickier because weightlifting reduces glucose levels (sugar as energy), so I know I need to recover quickly. And things like pasta will spike my sugar levels and that happens to be okay for me after strenuous activity. But it's funny because you wouldn't think pasta would get your 'sugar' levels up.
It was a pain at first to know and monitor your foods, intake, and your body, but once you get the hang of it, it gets easier.
And yah, lay off the crisps! Careful with sodium, too!
Do you like to play any sport?
― c21m50nh3x460n, Thursday, 2 May 2013 17:21 (thirteen years ago)
Thanks for all the advice! I'm going to be getting braces soon (finally!), so it's made me make a real effort to finally try to cut out as much unnecessary sugar as possible and to just eat healthier, both for my health in general and for my teeth.
I used to play football every week, but I haven't for a while now. I have started going out for walks again though, and I'm going to make more of an effort to get out of the house and exercise.
Thanks again!

markers you are kind of inspiring me right now. I'm not concerned about cutting out sugar per se but I drink way too much Coke, simply because it provides a lot of my calories. (A friend of mine once surreptitiously wrote down everything I ate during a day, figured out how many calories it was, and pointed out that I probably wasn't meeting my basal metabolic rate. That was three years ago.) So I need better habits! What have you been eating?
― 0808ɹƃ (silby), Wednesday, 29 May 2013 05:53 (twelve years ago)
oh lord, i'm not sure any of this will be helpful to you, but let's see. for dinner, i eat whatever's for dinner, which changes day by day. besides that, things are kind of up in the air. snacks, still. at some point i'd like to be on a more strict sort of deal with those, but for now i just eat what i want. tonight i had five soft pretzels. and regular pretzels. the one meal i've started to wrap my head around is breakfast, even though i don't always eat it as early as i should. the kinds of foods i'm talking about though are, like, milk, yogurt, a vitamin, cheerios, orange juice. idk, i'm not describing what's going on now properly, so maybe disregard this whole post. my basic approach right now, though, is going to be getting to the point we're i'm eating three regular, good meals a day. that's a definite. beyond that, maybe a small amount of snacks, "healthy" and otherwise. we'll see. it's worth doing though. i don't know what kind of effect sugar has on other people here, but it wasn't helping me out really, and now that it's gone it's not really that hard to stay off it.
― markers, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 06:02 (twelve years ago)

― how's life, Thursday, 6 June 2013 15:53 (twelve years ago)
I tried soaking almonds
they were tasty when I ate the first handful. but when you take them out of soaking and keep them in the fridge over the next day or so they start shedding their skins when you eat them and the whole enterprise just gets kind of annoyingI tried freezing them to some success, but honestly I think you just have to soak what you're going to eat/use the next day which, I mean cmon I like almonds but I ain't giving them that level of attention
so I'm back to raw, and they're fine

How can I can put weight on healthily? I've always been naturally skinny. I'm fed up of people telling me I need to eat more. Not sure how much longer I can bite my tongue and resist the urge to yell "I eat loads so stfu!" I have a balanced diet, I eat 3 meals a day, I try to snack on healthy foods. Chris the tried and true method is:
1 - eat loads of fucking food, every day. like 5 full meals a day.2 - lift heavy weights, 3 times a week, increasing the weight every week.
I tried this for like 2 months and realized I didn't have the willpower to stuff myself that much. It can get sort of gross imo, trying to eat 6000 calories a day when you weigh a buck fifty. really unpleasant. but some people can totally do it.

When I started being more conscious of my eating habits and tried to eat as healthy as I could, I stopped eating cereal altogether because I couldn't find one with enough low sugar. This was over 8 years ago. So, cereal was a 'treat' to be eaten every once in a while.
One day looking through the cereal aisle I found Nature's Path. They're a company from British Columbia. I looked them up now and it looks like they've expanded a lot.
I'm sure there are cereals comparable to some of the ones that Nature Path offers, but I don't get anything else.
Here is the one I get: http://ca-en.naturespath.com/product/multigrain-oatbran-cereal
Food labels will usually have the answers to your health questions, though (e.g., Which one is better, health-wise? Which one has less sugar, etc.?)
Remember that if you get oatbran or multigrain, don't eat whole lot, especially if you already eat lots of fibre, otherwise you'll be running to the washroom a lot! :)

yeah it's good! i was thinking of trying that out with these mini orange/clementine/whatever the fuck they are things we have.
i've actually done a not terrible job of cutting out shit like bugles and pringles. i don't eat either of those things anymore. but if i make a few more tweaks over the next week or so my diet should be very good. much better than it was during the dark days.

i mostly drink seltzer, some orange juice, and regular water. no more sugary anything when it comes to drinks. no more candy. no desserts. no donuts. muffins! bagels! i've had two power bars in the past 24 hours. but it's much better.

maybe i should go back and re-read some of the nutrition nazi threads in an attempt to next level things. i want to be super healthy. the fact that i actually have a good sleep schedule now is huge too though.
All about the olives lately.

at this gym i used to go to there was this very very fit girl who would hang out at the gym for hours and hours, on more than one occasion i saw her kind of lackadaisically pedaling a stationary bike while texting people on her phone and eating from a small bag of crinkle-cut fries sold at the grill in the building next door

let's try again in 2018
Been eating mixed nuts and sunflower seeds as snack food recently. Also drinking lots of lemon water.

We have been eating so many bean salads - oil, chopped fresh veggies, curry, s&p - so fresh and crisp and good for snacking.

do you like it on other things? i've never had it
― markers, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 20:04 (eleven years ago)
i am a peanut butter fan
what kind of peanut butter though?
― °ㅇ๐ْ ° (gr8080), Wednesday, 28 May 2014 20:33 (eleven years ago)
oh I love almond butter generally
I probably eat it more than peanut butter (which I also love)
I have it on toast, on ricecakes, and if I ever get a batch of apples that aren't quite tart enough for my liking, I dip em in almond butter so that I will finish eating them :)

i prefer natural peanut butter and almond butter mostly - ie just nuts, no salt or anything.
but if it's pbj time, then I need jif or something salty because unsalted peanut butter isn't right for pbj

for some reason i can't stand pickles as an ingredient in meals, on sandwiches etc but all by themselves they are one of my favorite snacks

sour garlic dills rule the school.
my favorite peanut butter find has been pb2 -- a powdered peanut butter with only one gram of fat per serving. it's good to mix into greek yogurt.
