The dude works so often that I've taken him for granted, but he's quietly built an impressive body of work: nothing spectacular -- he still seems like a supporting actor experimenting with leading man status -- but worth citing.

I love the second one. Depp is more obviously leading man material: he reaches out to the audience like Nicholson or the Harrison Ford of the Indy movies (not an endorsement of Deep's acting btw).
― Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:27 (fifteen years ago)
Damon is recessive and furtive; that's partly what makes him ideal casting in the Bourne movies (and why it's easy to imagine him turning into a zombie by the time The Bourne Inferno is released in 2017).
― Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:28 (fifteen years ago)
to me Damon's secret weapon is how funny he can be -- i've been thinking about doing a poll thread of his best comedic roles (The Informant, 30 Rock, Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back, even the Ocean's movies really, etc.)
― hann am0n tana (some dude), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:31 (fifteen years ago)
the 'supporting actor' cliché has as an element of truth in that he has the sort of generic appearance that police sketch artists must dread
he is like an avatar of civilized american values, even more colourless than clooney

A local weekly singled him out for his work this year:
Most Valuable Player
Matt Damon distinguished himself in just about every way possible in 2010 – charging righteously through Paul Greengrass’s Green Zone, playing a soulful seer in Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter, narrating Charles Ferguson’s Inside Job, turning in one of the savviest performances of his career as a puffed-up Texas Ranger in True Grit...and just crushing it as Liz Lemon’s boyfriend Carol Burnett on 30 Rock.
Rounders is my favorite performance of his.
― clemenza, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:39 (fifteen years ago)
green zone kinda gives lie to 'well chosen roles'
he did ok but script was pish
― Rockcrit from the Tuoms (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:40 (fifteen years ago)
On the one hand, I'm glad he chooses things like The Talented Mr Ripley and The Good Shepard, and up for the challenge; on the other, the Hollywood tricks let him down.
― Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:41 (fifteen years ago)

The Talented Mr Ripley is a serious bowdlerization of the novel: sentimental and soft even if, like I did, you enjoyed the Italian settings and the delicious supporting cast. Damon could easily have handled the sociopathic ambisexual that Patricia Highsmith created; instead he has to look doe-eyed and recite speeches about wanting to be an attractive nobody or whatever.
― Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:47 (fifteen years ago)

I can see why he did Green Zone, even though the script was a giant misfire in every way - he wanted to do another movie w/Greengrass that had some of that bourne juice w/o doing another sequel, was a chance to tackle ~important issues of the day~
xp I was gonna say earlier that it would've been great to see him do a FUN Ripley movie.

He was perfectly cast in True Grit, his comedy skills showed off pretty well (LOVE that scene where he flashes Mattie his US Marshall badge with that look like UH HUH GET A LOAD OF THIS, so tongue in cheek but playing it totally straight.)
Loved all of the Bourne movies, Good Will Hunting, Mr Ripley, Good Shepherd...really love him in 30 Rock, and his stuff on Entourage was hilarious. I think he's hottest when he's being funny.
Hereafter looked so dire not even Damon could get me to watch that one.

He's not quite as consistent as advertised (he added nothing to Hereafter), but I'll take his acting over Affleck's directing.
There was absolutely no call for him to get that nod for Invictus unless they just wanted to award him for having the biggest pecs he's ever had in his career, but he should definitely get one for True Grit.

Matt Damon: I take it you haven't seen Forces of Nature? Ben Affleck: You're like a child. What've I been telling you? You gotta do the safe picture. Then you can do the art picture. But then sometimes you gotta do the payback picture because your friend says you owe him. [They both take a beat and look at the camera] Ben Affleck: And sometimes, you have to go back to the well. Anyway, True Grit is the first time I've liked him in eons, tho I tend to skip anything where he's the lead (Bournes, Green Zone etc).
his best comedic roles (The Informant, 30 Rock, Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back, even the Ocean's movies really, etc.)

Outside of the Ocean's movies I can't think of many, if any, movies starring him that I've seen. (File under: "I know, right?")
Want to see True Grit, though.

Redford, I guess, but I guess you could make the argument he's a pretty mediocre director too (not that I think Affleck is any great shakes at this point.)

"I don't see Damon playing great sociopaths, as he was a black hole at the center of the utterly misguided Talented Mr Ripley."
Yeah that was a crappy adaptation.

TMR is a good movie and one of damon's best roles. not read highsmith but it's in the same class as the other highsmith adaptations i've seen, wenders's and hitchcock's.
― moholy-nagl (history mayne), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 17:43 (fifteen years ago)

i don't really like talented mr. ripley but maybe it's good as a movie apart from its failure to capture the novel
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 17:46 (fifteen years ago)
at the time i thought damon was pretty bad in it
yeah horseshoe otm those books are great and creepy, there are not enough novels about sociopaths these days imo
― max, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 17:46 (fifteen years ago)
Not really: Ripley doesn't make sense as a character. But I liked the supporting cast though.

i liked tmr, i will say this about gwenyth too, she is a babe
― max, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 17:47 (fifteen years ago)
i remember gwyneth and jude law a lot more than i remember damon's performance from that movie
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 17:48 (fifteen years ago)
cate blanchett is a babe
gwyn, she's ok
― moholy-nagl (history mayne), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 17:48 (fifteen years ago)
i will say, blanchett and law in that movie make paltrow and damon look very normal persony. paltrow is so pretty in general though; she looks kind of whatever in that movie, maybe that's part of why i didn't like it.
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 17:50 (fifteen years ago)
On the other hand TMR was pretty bold about its homosexual subject matter, and I remember the audience uncomfortably rustling when Damon asks Law if he can join him in the tub.
― Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 17:50 (fifteen years ago)
but these days jude law looks like ass and matt damon is v cuet, so

― moholy-nagl (history mayne), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 17:53 (fifteen years ago)
Jude Law went through that period when he made Gattaca, Wilde, and TNR that made him look dangerous and sexy; then he fucked his kid's nanny and became human.

I am not averse to Matt Damon, although I suspect that, like so many movie stars, his success is as much based on an intangible charisma as on acting ability. That's ok by me, since I am just as much smitten by charisma as the next guy, and this has been true of movie stars since the silent era.
I must say I am a bit surprised at all the love shown here, after reading so many ilxors slag off on Good Will Hunting, consistently and in multiple threads, as if it were one of the greatest abominations ever foisted on an innocent public. Clearly, he has redeemed himself.

if you plant an apple seed you wont get the same type of apple as the seed came from, youll get a random variety, the vast majority of apple varieties are unpalatable, so if you want apples for eating you need to grow the tree from a cutting, but all apples are good for making hard cider!

I still get a kick out of the scene in Switzerland where the two cops are hassling him, and after he grabs the first cops baton, there's this one-beat moment of "Holy Shit, its not just that I can tie all kinds of knots and speak tons of languages, I'm also a badass who can dismantle people" realization that they caught really well.

lol Max but maybe PP doesn't really want to picture that, is what he's saying
― VegemiteGrrrl, Thursday, 30 December 2010 19:21 (fifteen years ago)
"Oh yeah? Imagine YOURself fatter with a South African accent, jerk" lol
There used to be a rumor that William Goldman secretly wrote Good Will Hunting, but here's an even better story that's on the record: Terrence Malick suggested its ending. Matt Damon revealed that after he finagled a meeting with the reclusive Malick to discuss the script, the director suggested a change to the story's romantic happy ending, which found Damon and Minnie Driver leaving town together. "In the middle of the dinner, he said, 'I think it would be better if she left and he went after her.' And Ben [Affleck] and I looked at each other. It was one of those things where you go, 'Of course that's better.'" At least, it was a better note than Gus Van Sant's original insistence that Affleck's character should be killed: "Gus came down and said 'I want to do a draft where Chucky, Ben's character, dies on the construction site.' And Ben and I were just mortified. 'What are you talking about?' 'I want him to get crushed like a bug.' We said 'Gus what are you talking about? You cant just fucking smush Ben. That's a terrible idea.'" [Taking Barack to the Movies via MCN]

Stamp seems merely a slightly more malevolent celestial messenger than the avuncular Claude Rains-James Mason model, and the Adjustment Bureau members' physical and telepathic limits remain murky, as does the question of whether they use the main reading room of the 42nd Street library as a base only during overnight hours.

Libertarians make me so fucking mad. I was pretty much a libertarian from age like 15 to 19. Took exactly one college sociology class to straighten me out. Just grown adults living in this state of arrested development because they can't empathize for anyone who isn't in their shoes. It's a total non-shocker that libertarians have rallys on places heavily populated by socially inept shut ins like the World Of Warcraft playing field.
― james blood ulver (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 3 August 2011 15:09 (fourteen years ago)
An illustrative story, perhaps:
So yesterday, a patron, regular or summer school student here, comes to the desk and heads over to the self-checkout machine to check out a book, and is failing at it. I've seen some people confused by the machine first time through but this guy is failing, period -- getting everything wrong. I go to help him, he mentions he's 'really high right now' and we eventually get his book checked out to him.
Said book: The Fountainhead

My family is packed with teachers, and very good ones. What they do is important and to say that they’ve made a difference in the lives of their students doesn’t begin to cover it. But this “preciousness” attached to teaching is nothing more than a political ploy. The Left is using the teaching profession as a way to strengthen corrupt pubic unions and increase the government payroll — two ways to capture political power and create more Democrats.
he's on to us!

My father has worked with his hands his entire life. He’s kept aircraft in good flying condition for the Air Force, fixed your cars, remodelled your homes, and kept many a nursing home from falling apart. He’s lived a life covered in fibreglass insulation, drywall dust and raw sewage. In other words, without a union or movie stars flacking for him or the media oohing and ahhing over his precious profession, he’s kept this world turning and done so without complaint or summers off. What he does is no less important than what a teacher does, but he’s always been paid a helluva lot less – which is why the Left’s attaching of all this special nobility to a single profession is especially galling.

Sure, they don't get up at 5am, prep shit for class that day, TEACH children from 8-4, and then spend the night lesson planning and grading assignments. I must have confused that with some other occupation.

how much would a babysitter make to watch 20+ children all day? how much would someone make to basically speak in public all day? how much would someone make to deal with angry parents on the reg? that doesn't even count the sheer time it takes to be prepared for those things.
― mookieproof, Thursday, 4 August 2011 00:32 (fourteen years ago)
lol that reminds me of belle waring's classic pony blogpost.
Reason recently published a debate held at its 35th anniversary banquet. The flavor of this discussion is indescribable. In its total estrangement from our political and social life today, its wilfull disregard of all known facts about human nature, it resembles nothing so much as a debate over some fine procedural point of end-stage communism, after the state has withered away. Child-care arrangements, let's say. Position A: there will be well run communal creches! Position B: nonsense! the amount of work required from each individual to maintain a perfectly functioning society will be so small that people can care for their own children and those of others on a spontaneous basis, as the need arises!
Allow me to summarize.
Richard A. Epstein: even in the libertarian utopia, some forms of state coercion will be required. If we must assemble 100 plots of land to build a railway which will benefit all, and only 99 owners will sell, then we may need to force a lone holdout to accept a fair price for his land. Similarly, the public enforcement of private rights and the creation of infrastructure will require money, so there will have to be some taxes. [Note to self: no shit, Sherlock.]
Randy Barnett: Not so fast! Let's cross that bridge when we come to it rather than restricting liberty in advance. We'll know a lot more about human liberty in the libertarian utopia, and private entrepreneurs will solve these problems somehow without our needing to grant to governments the dangerous ability to confiscate our property in the name of some nebulous "public good." And as for rights enforcement -- look it's Halley's Comet!
David Friedman: Epstein places too much confidence in his proposed restrictions on government power. Rights could be enforced privately, and imperfect but workable solutions to the holdouts in the railway case could also be found. "To justify taxation we need the additional assumption that rights enforcement cannot be done by the state at a profit, despite historical examples of societies where the right to enforce the law and collect the resulting fines was a marketable asset."

it is a philosophy that only "works" if we all agree to go back to the atomization of the frontier, where everyone gets their own plot of wilderness w/ log cabin, their own chance to live off the land to the best of their ability, and the bonus of a good chance of likely dying within the first year from some disease or pestilence out of oregon trail.

KEENE, N.H.—My first interview with the city's antigovernment activists is happening in an RV that, technically at least, is breaking the law. The RV houses the "Liberty on Tour" project and often parks in Keene, and today, as it's been for many days, it's parked next to the home of Free Keene co-founder Ian Freeman. "The city doesn't allow RVs to park like this," says Freeman. "But they require a complaining party, and no one in the neighborhood is complaining. Now, theoretically, anyone from the city could complain. They know what's going to happen if they do. We're going to make a big deal about it. We're going to go to jail."
libertarianism: going to jail over your right to park an r.v. wherever you want

I never how anyone gets the idea teachers work less than other professions do.
teachers often have to do things that seem to involve them just sitting there waiting for their students to do things, while they themselves do nothing.
they also do an enormous amount of their work (grading and prep) completely alone, which besides the obvious (people don't realize they're working), maybe gets to some of the people who DO realize that they're working, because the idea of being alone somehow doesn't sit well with the circumstances of forced co-presence under which most people labor.

schools can be such stressful places and students are often getting a raw deal. so are teachers, to a lesser extent, and i feel like sometimes the only tangible thing the two groups have to train their ire on is each other, even though as the great matt damon points out what's wrong with education is a lot more *complicated* than students or teachers being bad.

yeah the things that frustrate me most about the "education debate" are a) the idea that theres a "crisis" in american public education, like, across the board, that is b) the fault of teachers and c) can be fixed in a uniform way, usually by d) busting teachers unions and e) creating private for-profit schools
― max, Thursday, 4 August 2011 01:20 (fourteen years ago)
and no one ever needs to see the evidence that there is a "crisis" in american public education! there is something weird about our culture that just people just _assume_ that all schools and students are worse now than when they were kids

― mookieproof, Thursday, 4 August 2011 01:53 (fourteen years ago)
well sometimes parents aren't on board because they had horrible experiences themselves in underfunded schools or it isn't so much that they aren't on board as that they work two jobs and are always exhausted, etc. etc. some of those parents' assumptions about the way in which schools train poor kids vis-a-vis rich kids are fairly otm, unfortunately. but then, the reasons underfunded schools perpetuate that trend are more complex than teachers suck.

mookie, parental support is critical! but they are not the reason why low income schools underperform for reasons horseshoe has explained. my complaint is that more affluent ppl have assumption about poor parents, building on a narrative about poor ppl in general (they are that way bc they are stupid and lazy).
my wife works in a high performing, fairly wealthy public elementary school, and it makes a p big difference when you've got an army of nonworking moms being hella entitled about what their children 'deserve', or a child having two parents who were v successful in school so navigating k-12 ain't no thang for them.

the problem is that we're still stuck with the reaganite account that we "throw money" at our public schools and it's accomplished nothing. i can't tell you how many fellow education students i knew who would spout that garbage. i was like, motherfucker come to my school in urban buffalo and show me evidence of any money that has ever been thrown at it. the federal government now pays private companies to supplement the school's services although that mysteriously hasn't seemed to improve test scores at all...somehow this doesn't qualify as "throwing money" at anyone i guess because deserving entrepreneurs get that money instead of communist schools.

i will say this much for linking public education to property taxes, provides for terrific letters to the editor and comments on local news websites

i just meant that absent (beneficial) parental influence a teacher's job is even *harder*. i've no doubt that the wealthy parents are an enormous pain in the ass, but i guess at least they care?
and like i said, dealing with unhappy parents is not something that most jobs require. i've been a little league umpire -- that was bad enough, and reason.tv wasn't denigrating my work
ps i'm pretty sure i'm agreeing with m bison and everything but maybe not expressing it well?

― max, Thursday, 4 August 2011 02:23 (fourteen years ago)
"do you think your services as an umpire could be better-provided by a private conglomerate of umpiring services contracted out by the home team"?
i was watching tv tonight and there was a target commercial with this annoying "enthusiastic" grade school teacher stereotype talking about all the various supplies the kids would need this year, and so of course i thought of this thread, and then wondered if the same people bitching about how their taxes go to fund public education are also the ones who bitch about having to spend so much money on school supplies that were provided free of charge when they were kids.

when i went to public high school though i could get any kind of binder i wanted
i didnt get any binder at all, though. tbh i dont remember owning any school supplies at all during high school
in my ed psych class this fall i was assigned the pro position in a debate on charter schools and school choice and i had to base my argument on an article by a cadre of reagan department of education dudes and at one point it actually said, "we must reinvent the public sphere" and i was like it takes some serious orwellian balls to say "reinvent" when what you mean is "destroy."

Also, if you can only process reality in terms of simplistic, direct causation, and either don't have the tools to cognate or refuse to admit how systemic causation plays into things, you're pretty much fucked and will thickly only stomp and cry over this one thing being the obvious reason why the world ain't perfect.
A lot of climate change denial works like this, in that plenty of people who have access to airtime don't have a fully developed part of their brains to think in terms of systems, or are so ideologically zealous that they refuse.

h'shoe, imo the only thing charter schools have going for them is the decoupling of where you live and what you school you go to, I guess from n urban policy perspective it wouldnt be terrible if ppl felt more inclined to live in urban areas knowing their kids could go to a school that's decent (hitch: most charter schools are bullshit factories)

yeah i think if i didn't live in a city with so many bs charter schools i wouldn't feel this way? also they do sap money away from public schools and some kids inevitably don't get into one and are sent back into a public system that no one is invested in anymore.
