there are buses pretty much everywhere. if you stay downtown, you'll be near the red, purple, blue, and gold line trains.

I think we're gonna stay at the Secret Garden. Kind of wanted to try something different, but it's a lot cheaper than any of the others.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 12 March 2011 15:32 (fourteen years ago)

btw, what's the best/not-expensive way to get from LA to SF without flying or driving?

Fuck bein' hard, Dr Morbz is complicated (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 12 March 2011 16:42 (fourteen years ago)

Bus or train being your choices...there seems to be a Greyhound web fare option at $42, where an initial Chinatown Bus search comes out at $55. Amtrak might actually work as well, though -- the Coast Starlight takes you from LA to Oakland with a bus connection into SF at $54, while a potentially quicker connection would the Pacific Surfliner to Santa Barbara with bus service from there to SF.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 12 March 2011 17:15 (fourteen years ago)

thx Ned

Fuck bein' hard, Dr Morbz is complicated (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 12 March 2011 17:16 (fourteen years ago)

All things being equal and with an eye on various service alerts and trackwork being done, I'd suggest Amtrak -- if you did the last option (LA to SB) you'd pass through the actual surfside part of the route there; everything else after that is more inland, though going down the Salinas Valley is also a joy, and in all it's a part of California that fewer people see because they're usually using the 5 freeway in the Central Valley.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 12 March 2011 17:17 (fourteen years ago)

Should also say I've done all these routes before so I know I'm what talking about from experience! If the Megabus option still existed that would be the way to go but alas that barely lasted a year. Chinatown Bus options supposedly start at $29 but a quick check at pricing over the next two months kept turning up $55 as a baseline.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 12 March 2011 17:19 (fourteen years ago)

btw, what's the best/not-expensive way to get from LA to SF without flying or driving?

this might be not morbs-friendly but my experience w/ norcal to socal via craigslist rideshare has been pretty good. don't take greyhound, it takes forever.

iatee, Saturday, 12 March 2011 19:12 (fourteen years ago)

morbs the best western on franklin ave by the 101 freeway is a short walk to Hollywood and i think the prices are fairly reasonable. there's an above-average diner on the first floor as well. if you're as much of a fan of 'swingers' as i suspect you may be, there were several scenes filmed in that diner.

Financially strapped KCET-TV is in talks to sell its landmark Sunset Boulevard studio to the Church of Scientology, according to people who know about the pending deal.

The Los Angeles television station, which is struggling to rebuild viewership after its recent split from PBS, plans to move its operations to a smaller location, real estate brokers said. Station officials have been touring potential sites, brokers said.

Terms of the potential deal were unavailable, but the 4.5-acre property at 4401 W. Sunset Blvd. has an assessed value of $14.1 million, according to county records. Individuals inside the station and real estate consultants who were not authorized to speak publicly about the transaction confirmed the pending sale.

Dr. M., perhaps you will meet a revivalist baseballer who you can invite to share your room for a romantic Hollywood weekend.

My sister's planning on renting a car; is this really necessary? The only out of town we might do is go to Pasadena.

Any classic old Hollywood recommendations for us?

Virginia Plain, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 17:08 (fourteen years ago)

Having a car certainly makes it easier to get around Los Angeles. I know there's a big public transportation contingent on here, but the public transportation isn't that great. Renting a car will certainly save you a lot of time sitting on buses.

Doomsday Derelict (J3ff T.), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 17:39 (fourteen years ago)

It depends a lot on where your home base is and where you want to be going from there.
As a native to the area I would have never considered not having a car back in the day but on more resent visits I have been using a car less and less.

Aerosol, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 17:49 (fourteen years ago)

in that case, i highly recommend bar marmont!

butterfield earth (get bent), Thursday, 7 April 2011 02:51 (fourteen years ago)

a.o.c. is awesome for wine/small plates/atmosphere and is on 3rd and crescent heights. you'd have to drive or take a cab, but it's not super far.

butterfield earth (get bent), Thursday, 7 April 2011 03:03 (fourteen years ago)

that's where the sunset strip more or less begins, avoid on weekends at the very least

buzza, Thursday, 7 April 2011 03:54 (fourteen years ago)

We went to chateau marmont for dinner and we loved it. Is that cheesy? We're saving bar marmont for another night. Thanks for the suggestions!

Virginia Plain, Thursday, 7 April 2011 04:02 (fourteen years ago)

apparently it's not up the grapevine, it's just after castaic?

If it's what I think it is, it's the Honor Ranch Gas Storage Site "a repurposed oil field where wells are now injected with natural gas, coming via pipelines from the north, for storage before being distributed through the urban grid" (from the latest CLUI Lay Of The Land newsletter)

Stockhausen's Ekranoplan Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Thursday, 7 April 2011 04:18 (fourteen years ago)

I witnessed the quickest pickup I've EVER seen on a Gold Line train the other day. I almost wanted to shake the dude's hand it was so impressive! He got on the train, sat down opposite this woman and was typing her number into his phone in, like, two minutes, I swear. So...go Gold Line.

Pompoussin (admrl), Thursday, 7 April 2011 14:32 (fourteen years ago)

Morbs you might want to check the Beverly Laurel hotel, might be a little bit too far south for you but the price is pretty good and it was pretty clean last time i stayed there

Aerosol, Thursday, 7 April 2011 14:56 (fourteen years ago)

Is it possible to get to Griffith observatory via public transportation? I think we should have rented a car after all...

Virginia Plain, Thursday, 7 April 2011 16:29 (fourteen years ago)

will consider, Aerosol, but even w/ limits of transit I think I'd like to be closer to a train line.

Now I'm even thinking of starting earlier to spend 4th of July weekend in either LA or SF.

your generation appalls me (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 7 April 2011 16:37 (fourteen years ago)

there is a bus that goes up hillhurst to the observatory - i think you can catch it at the sunset/vermont metro stop

Rolling down the hill, though...

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 7 April 2011 17:08 (fourteen years ago)

What happened to the sun? I think we'll wait till the weekend for Griffith park, and that way maybe it won't be overcast and we can hop the shuttle.

Gonna go to lacma and to look at historical downtown buildings...any good places to eat around there?

Virginia Plain, Thursday, 7 April 2011 18:32 (fourteen years ago)

Downtown, or near LACMA? Because those are two very different locations. Unless you're talking about MOCA?

Doomsday Derelict (J3ff T.), Thursday, 7 April 2011 18:39 (fourteen years ago)

Well, yeah, we were going to go to lacma and then downtown, but we've decided to just do downtown and moca.

Virginia Plain, Thursday, 7 April 2011 19:12 (fourteen years ago)

if you're going to moca, you can take the california plaza escalator down bunker hill afterward and get pupusas/tacos/etc at grand central market

For tomorrow; is Hollywood forever cemetery a good place to go? Anything else interesting to do around there!

Also, is the polo club at the Beverly hills hotel a good place to go? Or is there a more laid back place to eat at that hotel?

it was awesome! already anticipating the next one

Sittin' Fran (donna rouge), Monday, 11 April 2011 06:25 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah. Me and three friends rode from La Puente into Downtown. Met up with my old roommate who now lives on Spring, and spent the day on my bike pretty much. Everybody was so happy and polite, and for a crowd of 100k+, there was ZERO hostility.

naus, Monday, 11 April 2011 08:23 (fourteen years ago)

i didn't go, but i took a walk locally out of solidarity.

butterfield earth (get bent), Monday, 11 April 2011 17:55 (fourteen years ago)

I was hoping for more fresh produce from the Farmer's Market, and less chain restaurants. We ate at the counter at Phil's Deli--that was kind of cool. I immensely preferred the Grand Central Market though.

Why didn't anyone tell me that there was an Ed Ruscha exhibit at the Gagosian Beverly Hills? You expect me to do my own research?

We didn't see the cicLAvia . . . but we spent Sunday walking around our hotel neighborhood and peeking in open houses. We've got our eye on a 3 million number in the Hollywood Hills.

Virginia Plain, Monday, 11 April 2011 18:33 (fourteen years ago)

I was hoping for more fresh produce from the Farmer's Market

that's not really what this farmer's market is known for. it's known for the restaurant stands (and i'm sure the starbucks helps them pay the rent).

butterfield earth (get bent), Monday, 11 April 2011 18:37 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, I kind of got that impression. Oh, we ate at Pinches Tacos on our last day--that was really good. Thanks again for all of the help--I would have been lost without this thread. Carry on with your fascinating Angeleno lives. . . .

Virginia Plain, Monday, 11 April 2011 18:47 (fourteen years ago)

the citrus stands at the farmer's market are A+ - although the satsuma mandarins i bought from there went bad after three days >:(

Sittin' Fran (donna rouge), Monday, 11 April 2011 18:50 (fourteen years ago)

the 3rd street farmer's market isn't a "farmer's market" as such. it's a bunch permanent vendors and little restaurants, some of them selling produce yes but it's the same stuff you would get at the local ralph's tbh. it had and still does have i guess some throwback charm but that's hard to see because of the grove and other adjacent franchises.

buzza, Monday, 11 April 2011 18:52 (fourteen years ago)

yeah a lot of the charm that exists is muffled by caruso's monstrosity. if he becomes mayor i wonder how long it would take for sinatra to be piped out of speakers on every street corner in town?

omar little, Monday, 11 April 2011 18:55 (fourteen years ago)

so I'm thinking if I take one studio tour, it'll be Paramount, cuz it's only $35 and I wanna walk through the gate and eat in the commissary. I'm not paying $70 to go in Universal's theme park solely to take a tram that goes past the Psycho house.

also, there's some old silent-era studio north of H'wood Blvd that has tours by appointment?

resistance does not require a firearm (Dr Morbius), Monday, 16 May 2011 14:59 (fourteen years ago)

Universal does have the best studio tour, mostly because they have the exterior sets. Paramount isn't a terribly exciting lot, to be honest. Mostly just soundstages and (admittedly pretty) office buildings.

Doomsday Derelict (J3ff T.), Monday, 16 May 2011 15:42 (fourteen years ago)

the lines for the universal tour can get very very long in peak season (which starts memorial day weekend; i.e., in reality it's already started). the theme park's not so great but the views from the top level are stunning.

Paramount is a much nicer lot than Fox, Sony, or Universal IMO. It still has a faint golden age of hollywood aura to it while the others feel really corporate and '80s. I've never been to WB though, and I don't know what any of the tours are like.

Where did we go last time. Nice room, a little loud though. We all still on for that mid-July Saturday meetup?

the place in koreatown? i liked it, but the english-language song selections were limited.

are you are missing whiney (get bent), Thursday, 16 June 2011 21:57 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, i would vote for max karaoke instead (there's 2 locations, one downtown and one on the westside - haven't been to the DT one but presumably it is close by a subway)

Do you guys want to drink in Hollywood, Silver Lake?

joyless shithead (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 13:49 (thirteen years ago)

In my case (assuming we're still talking Saturday the 16th for a FAP) it'll have to be afternoon drinking, both Hollywood and Silver Lake are feasible. Will need to be back at Union Station by around 4:30 for the regular dinner with friends I do each month down here.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 14:07 (thirteen years ago)

the 13th sounds good! and i can probably drink the whole livelong day on the 16th so that's ok by me

the charo and the pity (donna rouge), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 16:32 (thirteen years ago)

very decadent option. I'm OK w/ doing a diff night (Friday?) if matinee drinking not good for others, but really I need to finalize my other plans soon so I know.

joyless shithead (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 18:48 (thirteen years ago)

Friday night would be out for me due to other plans, then again I am but one voice. I was talking with Cunga the other day about this and he's v. much down for Sat. afternoon as well.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 18:51 (thirteen years ago)

It should be noted that that is the weekend of Carmageddon, but considering as I seem to be the only person on here that a) lives on the west side and b) has a car, I guess that really only affects me.

Midnight Maniac (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 18:55 (thirteen years ago)

ohhh yeah

the ramen corner (get bent), Monday, 15 August 2011 21:39 (thirteen years ago)

There’s a major street called Western that’s on the Eastside of Los Angeles, which you should never confuse with East Los Angeles, because East Los Angeles is also a separate city, to the east of Downtown Los Angeles.

east los angeles is not a city... it's unincorporated l.a. county, except for boyle heights, which is a neighborhood in los angeles.

the ramen corner (get bent), Monday, 15 August 2011 21:43 (thirteen years ago)

someone sent me this link when i moved here: the communities within the *city* of los angeles. i.e., not including other cities in the county, like santa monica, beverly hills, etc.

http://www.laalmanac.com/LA/lamap3.htm

the ramen corner (get bent), Monday, 15 August 2011 21:52 (thirteen years ago)

max, Monday, 15 August 2011 23:41 (thirteen years ago)

that's just the "community planning areas," so all the neighborhoods and blue-sign places would be lumped in with that.

anyone following the development of the grocery strike? so grossed out by this detail from the LAT yesterday:

The retailers are fighting back. This week, Albertsons and Vons began taking applications for people willing to cross a picket line and work during a strike.

On Wednesday, customers walking through the front door of the Albertsons store at West 39th Street and Crenshaw Boulevard in Los Angeles were greeted with a sign offering $10- to $13-an-hour jobs “for temporary replacement associates due to a potential labor dispute at our store.”

I heard a radio ad by the unions that was touting some poll saying 60+% of californians wouldnt cross a picket line.. bullshit. They say that now when they dont exist.. Give them like a week once the strike goes down.

i'm going to this, at EPFC tonight (tho i can't stay the whole time):

Tuesday, August 30 – HAPPY BIRTHDAY GEORGE AND MIKE KUCHAR: AN EPFC VIDEO SLEEPOVER – 8PM Come celebrate George & Mike Kuchar’s birthday with an all-night pot luck pajama party at the Echo Park Film Center. Works by George and Mike will be screened until the wee hours of the morning, with a midnight toast to honor their birthday (August 31). Come dressed to act as your favorite faded starlet, and bring some B-movie props, as impromptu videotaping is liable to occur throughout the evening. A highlight of the event will be a selection of rarely screened works made with students from the San Francisco Art Institute, as well as the documentary The Smutty Professor, which chronicles the spring 2000 SFAI class AC/DC Psychotronic Teleplays as they make Planet of the Vamps. Former students are encouraged to bring their class’ project to screen!

i had dinner tonight at california canteen, a place i've passed by a hundred times but never thought twice about until someone recommended it. the name is pretty banal, but the food's good -- frenchy mediterranean bistro stuff -- and the vibe is secluded and not "sceney." they passed my "roast chicken" test, so i'm satisfied.

the roast chicken test being that the baseline for the success of any french-inclined restaurant is how well they do at roast chicken.

Kind of on the fence. Yeah, I'm SUPPOSED to be there and of course it looks great and such an opportunity will not come around again, I just don't know if I have the energy for REDCAT today. I think I'm gonna go home and watch Breaking Bad with my wife.

lol goat on table (admrl), Monday, 26 September 2011 22:46 (thirteen years ago)

I'd like to ask a question about cars. I know there are a number of LA ILXors who don't drive - jody, Ned,...Donna? What are your experiences, good and bad? I am thinking of selling my car as we still have three years of large payments on it and I can save those plus insurance plus gas, oil change, etc. and pay down my delightful studeny loans instead. Plus I am getting a bike, and can also get to work via one bus which stops right at the end of my street and then one block from work.

lol goat on table (admrl), Monday, 26 September 2011 22:49 (thirteen years ago)

Oh and we would still have one (paid off) car between us, but my wife would use that mostly to get to work.

lol goat on table (admrl), Monday, 26 September 2011 22:50 (thirteen years ago)

i get along just fine without one. the only time it becomes something of an issue is if i'm out late enough that buses run less frequently and i end up waiting longer than i'd care to to get home. (and i mean, no one likes a crowded bus, but they're also inevitable.) fwiw i live and work very close to two red line metro stops (takes me half an hour door-to-door to get to work from my apt), and i do most of my hanging out in neighborhoods adjacent to the subway (i.e. silverlake, DT, los feliz) - if you're on the west side - i'm not totally sure where you are - the story is probably much different. my roommate, for one, really wanted to move out here because transit options are not so great in palms. i also have a bike - likewise with public transit, i am optimistic that the lot of cyclists will greatly improve over the next few years here.

sons of menarche (donna rouge), Monday, 26 September 2011 23:07 (thirteen years ago)

I am in Highland Park between York and the Gold Line so I am pretty well served. Decent bike lanes too.

lol goat on table (admrl), Monday, 26 September 2011 23:08 (thirteen years ago)

in terms of cost-benefit, a monthly metro pass is $75, which idk how it stacks up against current gas prices (my guess is: decently?)

sons of menarche (donna rouge), Monday, 26 September 2011 23:09 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, it seems like east LA is benefiting the most from the new bike lane implementations, but i really, really wish they'd get to work on laying them down in hollywood

sons of menarche (donna rouge), Monday, 26 September 2011 23:11 (thirteen years ago)

oh yeah, I spend more than that on gas, plus I think my work might have a commuter plan.

lol goat on table (admrl), Monday, 26 September 2011 23:12 (thirteen years ago)

i feel that trying to see as much of the pacific standard time exhibitions as possible means i am going to be knowing the socal transit infrastructure verrrry intimately these next few months

COME

Presented in collaboration with Free the Streets
A FREE event for all ages*

Saturday, 11/5, 11am-2pm
Meetup: Mercado La Paloma (3655 S. Grand Ave. Los Angeles 90007)
Gather: 10:45am
Ride: 11:00am

As with all Folk Art Bike Rides, we’ll mix an exploration of art, neighborhoods, and unique community gathering spots. This time we’ll focus on Historic South Central LA, which includes LA’s old jazz district. This is also a special ride as it will serve as a “feeder” ride to Free the Streets, a party and fundraiser to support CicLAvia’s extension into South LA (at Mercado La Paloma). We will ride part of the proposed route, learn about spots like the African American Firefighter Museum, and ride along Central Ave., home of the legendary Dunbar Hotel, an LA jazz hotspot in the 1930s and 1940s, where we'll also get a sneak peak into the collection of Brian Breye's Museum in Black.

i just noticed that there are two adjacent parallel avenues in encino named gloria avenue and gaynor avenue! i bet they've got really good block parties.

Thursday, November 10 – 4 SUPER 8 FILMS BY LUTHER PRICE (ON FILM!) – 8 PM
A small collection of Luther Price’s legendary and controversial Super 8 films projected on their original format, including Sodom, Warm Broth, Clown, and Mr. Wonderful. In an article titled “Home Movies from Hell” in Bright Lights Film Journal, Gary Morris writes of Price: “He works in a disreputable format, appears in various guises in his own work from stylized, frozen-faced drag queen to naked performance artist to clown. Price’s film work has an oppressive intensity, envisioning an alienated world of often mindlessly repeated rituals and poses that entrap and suffocate his subjects ... Images of ruptured flesh and ghostly birthday parties are further ruptured and drained of life by Price’s torturous manipulations of the film, which can include chemical processing, filters, optical printing, re-photography, and even holes punched in the frame. What emerges is Price’s great subject — the breaches, breakdowns, and collapse of body, family, and society, and by extension all of life, in the face of unstoppable philosophical forces.”

Speaking of movie theaters being replaced, we went to see DRIVE at that One Colorado in Pasadena only to find that it is now one of these fucking places where you pay almost $30 for the privilege of being served a meal (which you pay for on top of the cover) and sitting in fancy seats while you watch the movie. And there we were at like noon thinking it was gonna be a cheap matinee. Fuck these places!

In other adam-related LA news, I finally went to the revolving bar atop the Bonaventure the other night. Is it bad that I thought it was kind of awesome? Downtown actually looks so beautiful from there.

I went to Perch recently and downtown looked p cool, I liked it, I was dressed like a hobo and no one cared

gAng ReLated (admrl), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 20:33 (thirteen years ago)

vitameatawalloginavegamin (donna rouge), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

it's not all fancy. I like Pasadena! But I have fancy tendencies

Yeah, Luther Price is great. And it is hard to see this stuff. Shame they are not showing "A" because that is dope

gAng ReLated (admrl), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 20:39 (thirteen years ago)

got a ticket to see the new bill morrison thing at AFI tonight also. i imagine i'll actually get in, unlike last night when i waited two hours to get into 'the artist' and then...didn't

vitameatawalloginavegamin (donna rouge), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 20:48 (thirteen years ago)

...except i totally didn't because 'we need to talk about kevin' was p draining and i just wanted to go home, lol

bonaventure rooftop bar is fun (and lame, but mostly fun).

i haven't been to the "gold class cinemas" in pasadena yet; i was hoping it would be more like one of the pub theatres like they have in portland (2nd run movie, cheap beer, cheap pizza).

When the man police have identified as a "person of interest" in Los Angeles' spate of recent arson attacks was sitting in the back of a squad car early Monday morning, a small group of witnesses gave him "the finger"-- and he returned the gesture with a smile, one witness said.

"It was creepy," said Rick Savage, a music producer who saw the incident at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue.

Savage said he was awake because he has been nervous about the string of arsons in recent days in his and other nearby neighborhoods. He said he had downloaded a police scanner application onto his iPad and went to the area at about 3:15 a.m. after hearing reports that authorities had tracked a person of interest in the case.
