i have an older ipod touch that doesn't have a camera. can instagram be used to apply filters to photos that are on your device but weren't taken with it?

― i don't believe in zimmerman (Hurting 2), Monday, 9 April 2012 18:48 (twelve years ago) link
also I only hang out in dive bars, so the bingo app would be limited for pretty much everything else
yeah but the original internet bubble was built on assuming things about the way people were gonna use the internet that were wayyy out of line w/ how the internet was being used at the time.
― iatee, Monday, 9 April 2012 18:49 (twelve years ago) link
from what I understand (e.g. reading one article on some camera blog) the Instagram photos aren't good enough to make prints off of. they're just web quality. (might be a bandwidth thing, even at the quality they are now it takes forever to load your feed and you have to have a good connection on your phone)
Hipstamatic photos are saved at higher quality and they do offer prints

― dmr, Monday, 9 April 2012 18:50 (twelve years ago) link
Why are the pictures people take worth so much to Facebook and Instagram?
I assume that this is a big part of it. In 2092, the U.S. Department of Commerce with the Bureau of Census and Online Media will release the first installment of the 2020 Tumblr and Facebook profiles.
― pplains, Monday, 9 April 2012 18:50 (twelve years ago) link
Instagram makes full-resolution (for the iPhone/iPad camera and given the square crop) files. They should be good for 8x8 prints now.
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Monday, 9 April 2012 18:51 (twelve years ago) link
the Instagram filters can be bad, but square is a more sensible format for what people use cell phones for than the oddball vertical format of the iPhone.

yeah I agree but the underlying assumptions about what was going to happen in the late 90s seemed 'more optimistic' than they do today, which allowed for a bigger bubble. there def will be winners and the giants today are a lot more savvy than the giants back then.

When you post a picture on Instagram and then share it with your friends, Instagram know who your friends are, and can build up a map of who knows who. And this is worth $$$, somehow.

if somebody develops a useful alternative they could capitalize on this disaffection but there aren't any real competitors atm. I have some late teens/early 20s friends on FB from the local music scene, one posted that he was going back to myspace and everybody kind of laughed at him.
google couldn't pull off a viable vehicle and they were already in the catbird seat. if it does happen it will prolly come out of left field.

one thing that's interesting about this is that, well, can the social giants always and forever just eat their competition? millions of people can start using something new very, very quickly...it in some ways justifies the draw something / instagram prices but you can't do that indefinitely when it's so easy to compete.

if instagram steals facebooks photos and twitter steals their status updates and foursquare takes location and blah blah etc soon theres nothing people use facebook for anymore and the mall sits defunct and forlorn
its ironic that fb has spent all this energy trying to be everything to everyone when people seem more n more happy to use diff services for each thing, sometimes they route that stuff through fb but increasingly not so much

yeah, this is one of those interesting internet class/education things, as more people start using FB you have more people -- usually older, poorer, ppl with fewer years of schooling -- using it "wrong" (this is kind of bill hitchert's thing), which means the tech bros and the youngs will go somewhere else for the social stuff. instagram is probably a good bet for a place theyd jump, which is one reason facebook bought it, and one reason people are freaking out about it

*certain* ppl are happy to use diff services for each thing - but fb still trounces everybody else in terms of users and visitors, and if they're able to successfully absorb serious competitors they can guard their flanks. the trouble will come by A) distinguishing serious competitors from the thousands of flash in the pan timewasters like formspring, B) competitors that have something which can't be easily absorbed into facebook's hive of villainy, or C) competitors that flat our refuse to be acquired because they think they can take the crown. frankly C is prolly the most dangerous type of threat to fb, tho A could collapse them under their own rome-like weight.

Facebook seems like the hardest to replace of all the big social things. I haven't looked at Twitter since I downloaded Zite (I was mostly using Twitter for interesting links - I don't really give a shit what celebs think about 140 characters at a time), I never see G+, I never look at the social aspect of Instagram (use the app to take a picture, post to FB sometimes), etc..

the weird thing about instagram as social network is that it's pretty hard to discover new stuff on it, I don't ever really "stumble across" anything on it without a good amount of effort (looking at photos that the other people you're following have liked is the best way I guess)
people who have a lot of fans on instagram seem to do it through using 8 million hashtags on every photo which is just super tedious and dumb
― dmr, Monday, 9 April 2012 21:27 (twelve years ago) link

Even Google - by whom almost every single startup dreams of getting bought up - haven't acquired that many companies (100 or so iirc). http://gigaom.com/2012/04/09/here-is-why-did-facebook-bought-instagram/
Facebook was scared shitless and knew that for first time in its life it arguably had a competitor that could not only eat its lunch, but also destroy its future prospects. Why? Because Facebook is essentially about photos, and Instagram had found and attacked Facebook’s achilles heel — mobile photo sharing.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 01:38 (twelve years ago) link
Basically, instagram has its mobile platform down pat and fb, even though its usable on mobile devices, is not MADE FOR mobile devices. Zuck just bought the infrastructure to remedy that.

'I doubt that the infrastructure the 12 people at instagram built is better than whatever mobile shit fb is working on'
the infrastructure probably not; the app, yes. instagram is one of the best UX experiences I've ever seen for a mobile app. incredibly easy to use.
still, yeah, no revenue and no apparent plan for revenue. I don't blame them for selling. fb bought it because it could afford to and was scared that instagram getting 500 mil in funding last week meant that it was on the verge of doing something bigger that was going to be a threat. in this sense, this makes fb start to look like a monopoly, or microsoft or some shit.

nah theres a good chance it is, just by virtue of the fact that facebook has been in existence as a website for nearly a decade now and has only lately been trying to build a mobile platform on top of that (and doing a bad job), whereas instagram is built *for* mobile. building platforms that work seamlessly with all the same features between desktop and mobile is pretty hard, and probably even harder on a site like facebook where you have both a large company and a massive user base. twitter is the only company i can think of that actually pulls it off.

I don't know anything about coding but when fb was created in 2004 or w/e, not sure the zuck anticipated it growing to include half the western world, from what I've heard fb has had problems scaling up their database infrastructure et cetera, hard to do when the world counts on you to be have an uptime of 100%, you can't just take it down for a week to transfer everything into the sleek new scaleable database your $500000/yr programmer bro just designed

I think facebook has some good devops people and software engineers, but I'm not sure if they've got everything pointed in the right direction! I know that several years ago their general direction was to work on creating a backend that would optimize the hell out of their existing codebase and give them the ability to continue working in the same languages while letting the site perform. Whether they've retooled, I have no idea.
Instagram is all amazon/s3/cloud-deployed, right? I think you gain a lot from starting from that approach in that if you do it right you are concentrating on scaling and the ability to dynamically add resources from the start.
― mh, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 14:05 (twelve years ago) link
yeah but they could start from that approach w/o dropping a billion dollars
― iatee, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 14:06 (twelve years ago) link
There's no way facebook or anyone else would have to actually take down a system to transfer to a new one, though. Might be some hiccups across regions and some weirdness with notifications, but I doubt we'd tell the difference since that happens anyway.
― mh, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 14:07 (twelve years ago) link
I think for them to do it they would have had to create a separate facebook iphone photo app, then people would get confused
― swaghand (dayo), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 14:07 (twelve years ago) link
if you're talking about infrastructure (databases for account authentication, user profiles, image storage) then that is the same for mobile or web.
client/app/mobile web interface is entirely separate from that.
― akm, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 14:08 (twelve years ago) link
xp No, certainly, buying Instagram is more about buying the user base and the whole package. A team of good engineers could create their own Instagram, but no one is going to jump over to a duplicate product.

their apis are awful actually. have you tried to use them? their documentation is a fucking nightmare, they depricate things all the time and don't really tell you; they introduced and then killed this fbml thing in like 2 years. now the only fb apps I ever had to use and/or build don't work. 'certainly, buying Instagram is more about buying the user base and the whole package.'
right. but its an exorbiant buy.
I work(ed) for KodakGallery until last week. We have a pretty cool event photo sharing app; plus a website and a whole product line. But we're tied to eastman kodak which means we're going down the toilet and up for sale. First bid? Shutterfly, who have worse products and a worse experience overall; but Shutterfuly ONLY wants to buy the membership base to cut down on their competitors and will kill the rest of the company. If they win the auction, they'll have gotten millions of users for 23 million. Bargain price. But compare that to this buy. 1 billion for a membership base? Really? FB is saying they will let instagram run as is and not interfere with it or force anything on the members; maybe because they would face a big backlash on it; but that is a LOT of money to buy something that you aren't going to 'do anything' to.
― akm, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 14:15 (twelve years ago) link
Yeah, I have no idea what the real goal is, and maybe there isn't a solid one. Zuckerberg seems kind of cool on the whole deal in media quotes, right? I kind of wonder if this was a consensus board pick or if there's something going on the business side of things.
Either that or they're real dicks and don't trust what their internal mobile app programmers say -- which may be the case, since at least one guy left because he was kind of bored -- and they're going to have some Instagram guys guide their mobile team.
― mh, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 14:23 (twelve years ago) link

I'm not even sure I believe this 100% but a lazy thought is that Facebook's brand has never been about cutting-edge technology, at least compared to Google...it was initially about game-changing usability and now it's really just about the fact that everyone you know is there. Most of their attempts to expand the feature set have met opposition or apathy. I know they do have some really clever people working for them and obv they have to juggle massive amounts of real-time data but idk I feel the tech aspects are probably not beyond the reach of a potential competitor.

I think the main way to make inroads on facebook is via the young (probably college age and younger) who will want something where NOT everyone is on it. Was it not initially the air of exclusivity that helped to launch facebook as a brand? Of course now it's morphed into something totally different, and it is institutionalized, in fact it's almost become a kind of utility -- a combination universal phone book, universal yearbook, universal greeting card conduit, e-mail system, chat system, photo album, etc. You don't do it because it's cool anymore, you do it because it's useful. But some college kid will come up with something that's appealing to young people and revolting or bewildering or just unavailable to older people and that will gradually eat into fb, eventually. It probably won't be just an edgier fb, it will be something paradigmatically different.

idk i'm pretty lazy about engaging with rights agreements & being concerned about copyright when it's entering the realm of the theoretical but this seems so cynical & dubious to me. like it already sounds like the kind of thing you can hear some shamefaced ceo retracting in a couple of weeks because it sounds like the kind of thing to trigger the righteous, petition-circulating libertarian tendencies of internet users. it isn't a million miles away from the thing about amoeba digitising other artists' records & selling them for profit - the idea that you host your photos somewhere & then that some hotel licenses one of them & a corporation makes fifty five cents on it seems super gross & depressing to me.

I don't think that's true, it's really easy to get people upset about stuff. like if it were a one time thing or something whatever, but if pepsi is running billion dollar ad campaigns and using instagram pics on a regular basis, you think that info is not gonna set anyone off? see: amanda palmer thing

i sorta feel you, it becomes prestige-y, like some strange colour in the ebay-user star spectrum, but i feel like there's a difference between seeing your holiday photo blown up & nicely accessorised on the page, & just knowing that your photo (/maybe even you!) is being used on a car company's website or in hotel literature for somewhere you don't give a shit about. this just feels so textbook-reason-for-an-indignant-reception, at least if there's a visible faction calling facebook out on it & presenting it as cheap theft, which there is.

Obviously everyone here is being all arch about it, b/c hipsters with instagram can never produce anything of any worth. But that really isn't the point. My family snaps aren't "worth" anything, I'd still be appalled if they were sold without my permission to companies I had nothing to do with to use as they like.

Re: people not really caring about this, I think it's endemic of at least some subset of millennials who just don't seem at all bothered by really overt online invasions of privacy. Which I feel has something in common with "being famous" as a goal that some of these same people pursue. Some sort of complete dissolution of private walls in the value-free (in the "all publicity is good publicity" sense) pursuit of being seen/noticed (see also: the seemingly carefree proliferation of online nudie snaps). It's all part of some strange gestalt that I totally don't get and that marks the most overt sense I've ever had of a distinct generation gap between me and people younger than myself.
― Oral Kiosk (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 19 December 2012 00:10 (twelve years ago) link
I don't think the issue is necessarily privacy, or even ownership, although these are both concerns. These are images that are already public in some ways, and I don't think the intent is to make them visible to individuals who couldn't already browse and find them.
It's entertaining that flickr is seen as a good alternative, which it mostly is, if you're worried about ownership. But flickr is more highly-searchable and -indexed than most sites, too. If you have public images, it's interesting to see who tags them as favorites or views them. I would get people coming from Google searches or flickr searches for concert pictures I took. Then there were cases where an image would get favorited, you check out their profile, and every image they've added is of a shirtless man. Or they only add images of people smoking cigars.

so I am newcomer to the Instagram thang and I have a boring tech question oh no
the app on my iPhone keeps wanting me to connect my camera roll to my instagram account
I haven't done this yet because I'm afraid that it's just going to put everything in my camera roll immediately up onto instagram and I don't want to share every pic I've ever taken because some of them are just way ugly or boring or, ahem, private etc.
is there a way to connect the camera roll to instagram but to still allow me as the user to determine which pics flow there and which don't? I hope there is, but for now I'm using a cumbersome app called Gramblr to upload pics from a computer to Instagram so that I can be more selective/more of an editor

Instagram advertising is a straightforward option when making Facebook adverts and sponsored/boosted posts nowadays. Tried it once so far as an experiment, but Instagram still works well organically, so we haven't found the need yet.

I think the bigger scale of Snapchat's images doesn't get noted enough. A snap photo has to be cropped to fit on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and so on, keeping a Snap photo from being interchangeable on other platforms.

the number of photos shared on average by each Instagram user fell
Weird wording there. When I think of "share", I think of what you do on Facebook with someone else's content or retweeting something on Twitter.
People "post" their photos on Instagram, and I get the idea what the writer is saying. There's a share button, but I rarely, rarely ever see it used by anyone.

That article also links to an article saying that facebook users have been sharing less of their personal lives, which is an interesting development that accords with my observations -- people have gotten a lot more selective inasmuch as there's no longer any novelty to just saying whatever the fuck you're doing/eating/thinking right now.

instagram is gd imo. like it is something you read when you are in a queue to access memes + screenshotted details of interesting internet information + then just cool world glimpses. abbott wrote something in another thread abt the virtue of smartphones being how you can foto the weird shit that stumbles into yr view while you are out of the house, + instagram is the repository for this at the moment i think.

i tried FaceApp after seeing all my friends do some crazy stuff w it on instagram. it's pretty wild. you have to pay to get a lot of the options, but you can still generate Smiling, Young, Old, Male, Female versions of faces. it's pretty spooky. lol i did the old one and i think it was too realistic looking it was scary lol.
it is pretty remarkable how well the algorithm does its job imo so far everything looks very seamless and it is supremely creepy to see an app photoshop a almost-perfect smile onto your face in 15 seconds. fun app if you like cyber divining.

― weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 23 April 2018 22:17 (six years ago) link
i feel like "normal" insta posts have become more polished over time, like flickr. stories now are more like regular posts used to be. they feel more suited to ephemeral stuff because they disappear after 24 hrs. it's like the "behind the scenes" version of your insta lyfe.
(also it shows up right at the top of people's feeds so they stand a better chance of seeing it)
― illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Monday, 23 April 2018 23:18 (six years ago) link
i understand how they might work for some people. i don't like the way instagram incentivizes stories with the ability to see who has seen them. that makes them less appealing to me. the whole hierarchy of posts and what they mean is so tiresome. i just want people to remember i exist. that's about it.
― weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 23 April 2018 23:26 (six years ago) link
now that i think about it, it bugs me that stories don't have likes. or maybe that's good, and regular posts shouldn't have likes either. i don't know. but they work totally differently, which is like.... why? you can comment on stories (i think?) but nobody ever does because it's not obvious how to do it.

why does it bug you that you can see who's seen your stories LL? you don't want to know?i haven't posted any, but no i generally don't want to know who has seen something. if someone likes something, that is nice but if someone has seen something...idk what that is supposed to say to me. it's one of the reasons i have never posted one. i want fewer quantification options in general, not more.

Since realising that I have a complete lack of visual memory / imagination (aphantasia) I've come to a very different understanding of how I use instagram - it IS my visual memory, basically. I look at my own pictures far more than I look at other people's. I also appreciate the simplicity of it.
― Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Saturday, 8 September 2018 07:00 (six years ago) link
It could be a personal thing, but I think Instagram has developed my visual sense. You start following some things you're really interested in: art galleries, asian and indian antiquities, exotic mediterranean holiday locations, pedigree cats, celebrity crushes etc - and after repeated attempts you start being able instinctively appreciate and critique the visual elements.

I can't really get with the story thing. I had to get someone to show me how they even work a couple of months back (I would've asked my daughters but I don't think I could have dealt with the level of eye-rolling) and I've never posted one. Maybe it's a bit too ephemeral? Or I don't have a story. I just use IG as a semi-social photo archive. The bar is a bit lower than for images I'd post to Flickr and I rarely instantly post from my phone. Also, it's not a public account. I've probably been getting IG wrong for four years now.

I started an instagram account to post short clips of myself playing guitar and singing. The only purpose of it is really to gradually get myself over my aversion to singing for people, which is a complicated childhood thing. I'm not playing any shows or recording anything so I have nothing to promote. It's kind of good for that -- I don't have to get a "perfect take" just a good-enough sounding 30 seconds of a song, and I can post it and get instant reassurance that I sound ok. I like using it also to see friends' music and visual art stuff.
That's about all I find it useful for, I find the visual diary aspect boring. In the iphone era everyone takes nice photos of food and picturesque city streets and hiking trails and stuff and it all becomes very samey.

• Checked "Posts I've Liked" recently, and holy shit. There were thousands of posts that I had never seen, liked by my account.
• Nothing else in my account seemed hacked. Changed everything up (except username) anyway, including password. Likes still getting added.
• Logged off all devices. Likes still getting added.
• I disabled my account for a day or two. Now, that stopped the likes from happening. But once I came back on again, the likes resumed.
These posts are from all over the world, mostly by "influencer" accounts that, again, I've never heard of. If I'm really bored, I copy and paste "This Instagram user buys their likes from hacked accounts!" over and over again. But that solves nothing.
And yes, I've submitted a support request to Instagram. I'll just hold my breath and stand by the mailbox while I wait for their reply.

that's pretty weird, certainly not happening with mine. do you think someone else is logged into your account?
― akm, Tuesday, 29 September 2020 18:30 (four years ago) link
If someone is logged in, they haven't fucked with my contact info or changed the password or posted anything under my name or made themselves visible at all.
When I check the log-ins, they're all from me (unless someone in the office is messing with me.)
However, I don't even think it's a human, at least not anymore. The freakin' VOLUME of likes they pour on to these posts is insane. Sixty in the past 6 hours.
One time, in 2015, I used one of those "Best 9 Pics of the Year" things. Other than that, I've never logged in anywhere else with it or linked it to anything.
Really, the only harm is that (a.) it's hard to see the actual "posts I've liked" through all the rest of the crap and (b.) it really looks like I have a strong affinity for big asses and rock-hard abs.
Which, it doesn't matter if it's true or not, ok! That wasn't my point!

definitely feeling where you're at, Tracer. the stuff-into-the-void model/habit/approach def doesn't feel the same way it did when I started my flickr in 2005. which already was at a different moment than like "hi folks, welcome to my home on the World Wide Web" in 1998. but i'm not at a point of *not* wanting to share some things, in some ways. the flickr posting/archiving cycle is part of my photographic hobby now, even just for the discipline of getting me to process and organize my photos and write down my thoughts on some things... i find that nice in a lot of ways. sometimes it feels like an infinite irrational burden on myself but i think that's just the highs and lows of it being a hobby, and not specific to the internet/social media. but as much as i'd love to share my hobby with more people and have it spark more conversations, I feel weird receiving friend requests from whole categories of people i meet...
― I Am Fribbulus (Xax) (Doctor Casino), Sunday, 29 August 2021 00:59 (three years ago) link
Agree with Tracer and Dr Casino, esp the "infinite irrational burden" + "discipline of process/organize" re: Flickr. Except I don't even write any sort of commentary any more; tbh back when it was a joint account with my ex, I provided 80% of the visual content but she wrote the "copy" :) Also I'm typically Lightrooming/uploading in bed at 11pm and I don't have the energy to do anything more than the most perfunctory naming/tagging/grouping.
IG uploads are generally from the "proper" cameras too, WiFi'd to the phone, and pushed up at the time. Flickr uploads are mostly just an expanded set of the same thing, just 10+ days behind.
As there's no way (AFAIK) to set access levels on yr IG feed (not so with stories), mine had to be private from the get-go (family snaps, now v rare due to TEENS), so there's automatically a small audience for my mix of diaristic and "artistic"; IG contacts are only interested in the former, and the casual Flickr passer-by only sees the latter.
The great common denominator - where Flickr randoms from Austria and Brazil AND people I've known for 20 years all seem moved to say "oh that's nice"... cats. Everyone loves cats.
― Michael Jones, Sunday, 29 August 2021 10:09 (three years ago) link
Mike, everyone loves all your pictures, wherever they are!
Also, Tracer Hand, I like your Instagram account.
What Dr Casino says rings a bell. There is a kind of task of documenting one's own life, photos, words, whatever, which is lonely and may feel a pointless burden, but I think is worth persisting with. Otherwise, as Lawro would say, we might as well pack up and go home.
Oh - we *are* home.

I'm like forks, use it for posting art and following other people in my art groups. I hardly post any social stuff, I'm sure that's 99% down to having a family and no social life lol or time to do all the processing and curating I used to on flickr, but I miss taking that time to make good photos, I feel like the square format and phone only consumption don't encourage that. Maybe that's just old man yelling at cloud.
― Believe me, grow a lemon tree. (ledge), Sunday, 29 August 2021 19:36 (three years ago) link
they now let you post non-square photos! (but in multi-photo posts, they all have to be the same proportions and orientation, or it forces them all to square.)totally agreed about phone viewing. insta/phone is good for some kinds of experiences, but doesn't lend itself to many others. and of course, it lacks all the album/collection organizational stuff that flickr permits. feels like a "reddit vs. ilx" parallel -- just a firehose of stuff instantly disappearing into the void, where with every independent voice just screaming in parallel and then forgotten, versus a durable and engaged conversation. the latter is compelling to me, while the former is just exhausting.

The privacy issues mentioned above would worry me.
But my main feeling about IG these days is just that the nature of the feed has changed so much, and badly.
Roughly, it used to be:
* chronological sequence of things that people you follow have posted.
Then it became:
* algorithmically enhanced stream of posts from people you follow, not in chronological order anymore but with your 'favourites' at the top, etc.
That was fine.
But now it seems to be:
* a few posts from people you follow; an equal number of posts from people you don't follow but are deemed to be related or relevant; an equal number of adverts; many of them in reel / video form.
Something that seemed relatively modest and manageable even, what, 2-3 years ago, is no longer. It seems fairly openly to have become more of an advertising site, with occasional interruptions from content from people you actually know.
That's my own experience at least.

When people talk about 'the browser version', TBH I am not sure what they are referring to.
Are they talking about using a computer, or (as I expect is normal) a mobile phone?
My impression is that the app (the thing where you press the IG symbol?) is normal for a phone.
I sense that people may be saying: you should use eg: Google Chrome, on a phone, and access IG from that.
I am not really sure how to do that, though.

I can't explain why, but Instagram's stab at being TikTok just ain't working.
There's something just a little too saccharine, just a little too pandering, about those videos or reels or whatever that makes it lose any air of authenticity. I'm making this up, but like "Hey, kids! Ya like those TikTok challenges? Well here's one – try juggling three balls at once!"

Youtube/Instagram seem to compete to see who can more aggressively ignore the "this doesn't interest me" function - any engagement is engagement so here are more self-help/rise and grind/dead-eyed soulless dance posts for you.
I only use TikTok to share animal videos with friends and it seems to still be pretty functional on that point.

it’s kind of incredible that IG now has three different mechanisms for posting, each with its own name, in an effort to keep up with tiktok, which sensibly has just oneif your app has “i’m not interested in this” buttons your app’s algo is not good enough imo (or your investors are pushing you too far down the monetisation funnel)

recently i thought i had ran across what i thought was a real person on instagram who was a fan of what i was making. she had actual comments that made sense and asked some questions about process and that kind of thing. i looked at her profile and saw that all of her pictures were pretty standard vacation photos, but that all of them from the last 2 months had many hundreds of "likes" and very generic comments (🔥🔥 to a photo of a wine glass on a table). and then, from the period just before that, they all had maybe 5 likes or 12 or 15. a normal amount. so i think she probably just bought a bunch of spam followers, as certain people on instagram like to do, i guess. but still, she was kind and complimentary to me and was asking real questions, so whatever.
then she asked where i lived and if she could visit and i blocked her. wtf is wrong with instagram

i wish they'd been more familiar with albania, god, they could have done an amazing send-up of hoxhaism. hell, maybe they _did_ do a send-up of hoxhaism sometime during season 27. nobody will ever know.

Is it me, or is Instagram suddenly full of ads and random accounts and videos as such?
It’s becoming a lot like another platform …

It's not new, but yes. Hit the logo in the top left and choose 'following' to get rid of all (or most) of the rubbish. You have to do this every time you open the app.

Facebook being nothing but scammy ads and suggested posts makes sense because everyone I actually know has stopped posting there (I have to keep it for work) but Meta fucking up Instagram in the same way has been impressive.
― papal hotwife (milo z), Monday, 31 October 2022 20:55 (two years ago) link
The instagram image editor seems to have gone to shit - if I'm posting multiple images (as I usually do) then if I move one image in the viewport so it's centred where I want it to be, when I go to the next image the first one just resets itself. The last one edited works - so posting single images is fine.
― ledge, Friday, 27 January 2023 13:49 (one year ago) link
I tend not to post multiple images, partly because they have to follow the same aspect ratio (and I think I've had this issue you're reporting), and also because there's a loss of quality (or used to be). This probably makes my feed extra tedious, as I just post 5-6 images from the same place all the time.

― Picture of Chairman Mao (I M Losted), Friday, 27 January 2023 23:24 (one year ago) link
I use mine for microblogging and from random comments I get, this seems discouraged.
Unfair, what gets favored is the whole "influencer" culture where people make daily posts with a consistent theme - fashion, design, etc.

Instagram has started to suggest MAGA/Covid conspiracy stuff way too regularly - and Paramore stan accounts. I don't follow anything political on IG and I'm not sure I've ever actually heard a Paramore song.

I primarily look at instagram on my laptop, not on my phone.. and for the longest time I saw no ads at all, and nobody I didn't know or agree to to follow
Now it's probably 25% ads and 30% people I've never heard of

I don't look at it much, and I'm glad my feed is appropriately limited to people playing drums or synths/DJing, but it's still feels like 50% people I don't follow (including a few popular ones that get served over and over again) and I generally hate the whole vibe.

― pplains, Monday, 20 March 2023 13:24 (one year ago) link
Also know why insta doesn't have the same vibe as tiktok? The way insta makes the screen go up and down after a video finishes to prompt you to swipe.
Like, dammit, I was going to re-watch this wacky weatherman clip again, but now you're just making me seasick.
"Helpfulness" aside, it's wild that insta wouldn't consider viewers watching the same video multiple times.
― pplains, Monday, 20 March 2023 13:27 (one year ago) link
my favourite feature is when you want to watch some (dreadful pointless comedy meme) clip but you get interrupted and close the app. when you reopen you see the clip for a tantalising fraction of a second before you get scrolled to the top of your timeline, with no way of finding the clip ever again because it was from an account you don't follow.

I have no intent, nor interest, in joining Threads, but even less motivated to do so since the launch seems to have broken Instagram in the process. Within hours of the launch, 80% of the posts on my feed show up as blank grey squares, 10% show up as very blurry, the rest (sponsored ads, natch) appear just fine. Stories load about 20% of the time and almost every avatar is a blank grey circle. Good job Zuck!
― Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 7 July 2023 16:36 (one year ago) link
So my feed still doesn't load and now Stories never load. Video posts load about 80% of the time, but photo posts are still a grey box. Apparently not a widespread enough issue for Meta to actually fix it, but according to Reddit and Twitter there are quite a few people dealing with the same thing. At least Twitter is still functional as it circles the drain, but I've never seen an app just completely stop doing the main thing it's intended to do (i.e. show photos) for this long before.

What the heck is happening with Instagram?
I’m someone who uses the platform through a browser app on my smartphone, not through the Insta app.
And for the last couple days I just can’t find any way to post things. It’s as though that has simply been taken away for absolutely no reason.

when did they change the views when you click on a hashtag from 'top posts / recent posts' to 'top posts / filter' and if you click on filter it brings up a menu with 'top posts / top recent posts' options? absolute dogshit ui design. i want recent posts not top recent posts, and two buttons where one performs an action and the other one brings up a menu which only contains two options one of which is the same as the first button has real 'ui design is my passion' energy.

you guys know what 'Sodastream' is right? this kitchen appliance that makes seltzer out of water?I've never searched for the thing. Never even thought about it after a co worker mentioned they bought one -- maybe 10 year ago. Yesterday I bought a liter bottle of seltzer and drank it throughout the day - opening it several times at my WFH desk. Of course each time I opened it, the bottle made that hissing, escaping carbonated gas sound. Today I log on to insta and the first ad I see is one for Sodastream.

I think the people who actually understand the tech (not me, notably) have tried to explain over and over that your phone isn't bugged, and isn't listening to you. It is, however, linked to accounts that know your shopping behavior and also know what other people you've been near and places you've been.
I visited my parents halfway across the country and my mom said verbally that she bought an item, I had never heard of it or searched for it or seen it before, but after I went to her house, the item showed up in my soc med feeds...because her device and my device were together, at the same location where that item was purchased and delivered to.

The Threads posts that are randomly shown to me in my insta feed are wild, only the most bitter clickbait from musicians about marketing, reach, and how much the industry sucks, usually in the form of bad sanctimonious advice. Threads is little better than X in terms of how you're forced to read reams of utter garbage thanks to the algorithm.
