bring your patton vs. louie arguments in here imo

Dan Watagatapitusperry (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 21 January 2011 02:24 (fourteen years ago)

i think the real diff between Patton and Louie is that Patton sets himself up as the outsider—sci-fi, too-smart-for-suburbia, anti-monoculture, english major, living embodiment of the Onion A/V Club. His comedy presumes a self-righteous feeling of alienation in his audience--whether that comes from being a comic geek, or a film snob, or an indie type, or a hipster, or a message board poster. It's kind a cuddly Sub Pop version of Bill Hicks or late-90s David Cross. Which, as far as I'm concerned, is a totally great thing. But...

Louie shoots way higher, going for a general Homer Simpson everyman vibe. His bits are all about how thinks he's stupid, fat, awkward, frazzled, weirded out by people, uncomfortable around women. It's a stark humanity rendered with hyperbolic tools and gallows humor. And you don't have to have listened to Stooges records or read The Watchmen to relate to that shit.

i want more thoughts on daniel tosh and his college campus race humor. is he big with the kids?

scott seward, Friday, 21 January 2011 02:41 (fourteen years ago)

umm not really? more like the 20-35 demo prob

i'm hoping people post great stand-up youtubes itt

Mordy, Friday, 21 January 2011 02:43 (fourteen years ago)

He made the news on July 13, 2010, for beating both Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert in ratings to have the highest rated non-animated show on the network. Tosh.0 is averaging 2.2 million viewers beating The Daily Show by 0.2 million viewers and is beating The Colbert Report by 0.8 million viewers

scott seward, Friday, 21 January 2011 02:44 (fourteen years ago)

that's a bit of a misnomer cuz his show is only on once a week -- if either stewart or colbert was on his schedule they'd be doing like triple that tosh number

hard as a markers (J0rdan S.), Friday, 21 January 2011 02:45 (fourteen years ago)

i like tosh.0 a lot as a show but he definitely crosses the line b/w making race jokes & using comedy as an excuse to be a racist

This is OTM. i think Family Guy does this a lot too.

tosh.0 is good! like it's entertaining & it deals w/ internet memes in a better & funnier fashion than the whole internet & most other pop culture mediums -- i think it has a great balance b/w 'the soup'-style playing a video and saying zingy one liners & field pieces (one of the best ones is w/ the guy from the nyer article that was stuck in an elevator) -- his field pieces are almost always amazing

i like his stuff like "Web Redemption" but seriously loathe anyone who shows funny YouTube clips on TV and then comments on them. Like they're YouTube clips, they stand alone!

Like some Vh1 show or something was like

[plays clip]
Patrice O'Neal: That lady totally fell down some stairs!!!

Dan Watagatapitusperry (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 21 January 2011 02:57 (fourteen years ago)

web soup > tosh.o

dj plain ole m@tt (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 21 January 2011 02:57 (fourteen years ago)

that said, like i said earlier, i can't fully defend the show because he does say a lot of racist shit that isn't funny -- like you can't try & pass off received racist wisdom ("lol black people steal things!") as comedy, because it's not comedy, it's racism, and the context of the remark doesn't make it less offensive or funny at all -- AND on top of that his audience probably contains a large portion of people that think that telling jokes about black people stealing bikes is just innocent humor

Tosh.0 may go over the line sometimes, whatever...who cares. I just think that guy's a horrible douchebag in a way that Joel McHale never is, even if they're doing roughly the same thing.

hard as a markers (J0rdan S.), Friday, 21 January 2011 03:00 (fourteen years ago)

I have a friend who just recently got a job as a writer for Chelsea Lately, but she's only had a couple jokes get used. She's honestly doing everything she can to make that show more cool, but it may take a while.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 21 January 2011 03:01 (fourteen years ago)

Tosh.0 is huge with a bunch of my coworkers...I've watched it a few times, but there's something a little bit too ironic about him. He makes me feel old bc I can't always tell where the joke ends, or if he knows...but he is kinda cute and the web redemptions are p great.
Soup for all time though.

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 21 January 2011 03:19 (fourteen years ago)

j0rdan is otm about tosh and imo his show is the one exception to the vh1 show-type shit whiney is describing.

some dude, Friday, 21 January 2011 03:38 (fourteen years ago)

i've thought about starting a thread like this for a while but i was gonna say we keep it just about standups who are known as standups and not people who've already moved onto successful movies/tv shows...i feel like there are a lot of good middle ground comics out these days (and improbably a lot of them were on Last Comic Standing)

some dude, Friday, 21 January 2011 03:40 (fourteen years ago)

I guess this is as good a place as any to mention that Maron is going to be a guest on Conan tonight. I think it's the first time he's done the show since it was Late Night, which is where I first saw him a zillion times in the 90s.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 21 January 2011 03:42 (fourteen years ago)

Got to see Dan St Germain middle for Marc Maron a couple of weeks back. He is really fucking funny imo.

Want to see Moshe Kasher or Kyle Kinane if/when they roll through town...the clips I've seen and interviews have been great.

Kind of excited for Maron to be on Conan, hope it goes well. Though it is good podcast material if it doesnt I guess, so win win maybe? Lol.

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 21 January 2011 03:44 (fourteen years ago)

Saw him on Ferguson a couple months ago and it kind of made me cringe. Jokes were decent, but he seemed so eager/ingratiating.

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Friday, 21 January 2011 03:49 (fourteen years ago)

That's the only time I've ever seen him do stand-up, mind you. I know him pretty much exclusively from the podcast.

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Friday, 21 January 2011 03:50 (fourteen years ago)

He and Conan go way back. I'm only slightly exaggerating when I say he was on Late Night a zillion times.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 21 January 2011 03:51 (fourteen years ago)

It's like 40-something.

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Friday, 21 January 2011 03:53 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, that seems more right.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 21 January 2011 03:54 (fourteen years ago)

Anyway, are we all glad that Demetri Martin has sort of vanished from existence?

Johnny Fever, Friday, 21 January 2011 03:55 (fourteen years ago)

Fuck yes

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 21 January 2011 03:56 (fourteen years ago)

i think Demetri's Comedy Central show was his big shot and he blew it. by that measure, you guys should be happy it was Tosh that thrived instead.

some dude, Friday, 21 January 2011 03:58 (fourteen years ago)

Maron's always had a hyper nervous vibe, that's part of his appeal imo

some dude, Friday, 21 January 2011 03:59 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i wasn't a fan of martin at all

hard as a markers (J0rdan S.), Friday, 21 January 2011 04:01 (fourteen years ago)

just watched the opening of Conan...it's really weird to see a talk show announcer trumpet one of their guests as "from the so-and-so PODCAST!"

some dude, Friday, 21 January 2011 04:03 (fourteen years ago)

I've seen Maron twice now in the past 6 months. He has a nervousness in his stories and delivery a little but then again, he is so comfortable on stage it's like you're visiting him in his living room. Just really loose and conversational and he doesnt grind gears between stories/bits the way younger comedians sometimes do. And he makes a lot of eye contact with the first couple of rows so it instantly makes the room seem smaller. Just fun watching the subtle little tricks.

Though i will say no wonder he pulls crazy sex crazed stalker girls. Dude is like a walking embodiment of the handsome college professor archetype as far as the way he dresses and behaves on stage. I saw him and was like "ohhh yeah I totally get why 25 yr olds screw your brains out."

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 21 January 2011 04:04 (fourteen years ago)

apparently podcasts really are the new smart career move for comedians:

When [Comedy/Podcasting] Worlds Collide: Greg Fitzsimmons, who recorded us on his podcast last weekend, did an amazingly killer set on "Lopez Tonight" last night - check it out here [must-watch]. Fitzsimmons was on Marc Maron's WTF podcast just last week (listen here) and tonight Marc Maron will be on "Conan." Greg Proops, whose (excellent) live podcast I attended last week (listen here) was counted by The Hollywood Reporter TV critic (and friend) Tim Goodman as a forerunner for replacing Regis Philben on "Live! With Regis And Kelly" pending his retirement - a move that would finally make that show worth watching. And, in summary, it should be noted that Greg Fitzsimmons, Marc Maron, and Bill Burr (a frequent interview subject whose podcast we've often highlighted here) all have TV shows that are actively in development and/or have even shot a pilot. 2011 could be a great year for all of these great producers of comedy and for us viewers. - http://laist.com/2011/01/20/tv_junkie_516.php

some dude, Friday, 21 January 2011 04:06 (fourteen years ago)

Proops in place of Regis! God if that happened I would be happy. love that guy.

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 21 January 2011 04:08 (fourteen years ago)

I basically only know Proops as someone who people think looks like Kenan. I think I thought he was British until like a couple weeks ago.

I like comedy, but I'm probably not a comedy nerd. Wondering how much that has to do with the fact that I've never in my life had cable and so have never seen any HBO or Comedy Central specials.

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Friday, 21 January 2011 04:10 (fourteen years ago)

ha, bill burr is gonna have a TV show?? his stand up special on comedy central recently was pretty great i thought & he was always welcome on the chappelle show

hard as a markers (J0rdan S.), Friday, 21 January 2011 04:10 (fourteen years ago)

Burr can be funny but i don't particularly like his standup

some dude, Friday, 21 January 2011 04:13 (fourteen years ago)

that's the kinda stand up i usually go for tbh, like ppl ranting about their lives as opposed to, like, carefully constructed jokes (& never anything w/ any ironic distance -- this is why i can't listen to comics telling jokes about reality tv) -- he's not amazing cuz his rant to joke ratio isn't as high as someone like louis ck, but i dig

hard as a markers (J0rdan S.), Friday, 21 January 2011 04:15 (fourteen years ago)

I used to always confuse Greg Proops and Tom Kenny...until Proops got sorta fat.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 21 January 2011 04:16 (fourteen years ago)

Proops did a lot of work in Australia for some reason...he was at the Melbourne Comedy Festival a lot if memory serves

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 21 January 2011 04:27 (fourteen years ago)

he was one of the only American regulars on the original Whose Line and lived in the UK for a few years while that was on, i think maybe from that he started touring internationally a lot more than most comedians at his level do

some dude, Friday, 21 January 2011 04:38 (fourteen years ago)

lol Maron actually just referred to his look as "cool professor" on Conan

some dude, Friday, 21 January 2011 04:42 (fourteen years ago)

and now he's talking about groupies! i feel like Conan was reading VegemiteGrrrl's posts on this thread immediately before interviewing Maron.

some dude, Friday, 21 January 2011 04:45 (fourteen years ago)

i hope he talks about his time machine eventually

Dan Watagatapitusperry (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 21 January 2011 04:49 (fourteen years ago)

I can't imagine listening to anything on my phone other than the other half of a conversation, but I've downloaded a couple of Maron's podcasts to my laptop. The only one I've listened to so far was the Robin Williams one, which was occasionally interesting but generally way too much listening to two aging dudes sharing stories you weren't there for.

that's not funny. (unperson), Friday, 21 January 2011 04:51 (fourteen years ago)

These days I listen to WTF at the gym.

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Friday, 21 January 2011 04:51 (fourteen years ago)

I do work while I'm listening. Or drive. No time for space.

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 21 January 2011 04:52 (fourteen years ago)

Comedians talking about creating comedy is as fascinating to me as musicians talking about making records, so I was more drawn to WTF when it finally decided what kind of path it was going to take.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 21 January 2011 04:54 (fourteen years ago)

Me too.

Totally agree with this. The next issue of Burning Ambulance (a quarterly zine I edit) is (assuming the writer gets it to me) gonna have a feature on Brian McConnachie, who's not a standup but who wrote for National Lampoon, SCTV and Saturday Night Live (and Shining Time Station, apparently, but never mind that).

i hope they're bringing it back this year, but last year Showtime had a great show called The Green Room With Paul Provenza that was just panel discussions with comedians that were totally goofy and profane and off-topic with occasional serious insight into comedy. that being on last summer around the same time as Last Comic Standing and Louie felt like a buffet of entertaining TV about standup comedy.

but i'm in the same boat as Whiney where i just can't imagine taking the time to listen to a comedian's podcast, no matter how much i might like them or how funny it might be. i wish all these great comics with podcasts just got hired to do morning shows on every radio station across the country and replaced the hacks that usually do that job.

the hannibal buress album is pretty much the opposite of this, he's very laid back, but i do think pretty much all stand-up comedy is based on the concept of the comedian being "convinced of their own righteousness"

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 21 January 2011 14:44 (fourteen years ago)

I like Bamford in small doses. I liked Kristen Schaal better when she was giggin around NYC. Tompkins's Impersonal CD from 07 is kind of a snooze, but that bit about peanut brittle is one of the funniest fucking things I've ever heard.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 21 January 2011 14:44 (fourteen years ago)

Yep. I've pretty much been on the lookout for peanut brittle in a can since then but I've found that, sadly, it mostly comes in boxes these days.

I haven't heard the Bamford Maron interview. I'm still sort of traumatized from last weekend when I listened to that one he did with the little bald guy who likes hookers. I'll give them Bamford one a shot.

Mordy, Friday, 21 January 2011 17:58 (fourteen years ago)

think whiney might be overselling the buress album a little tbh. it's a good solid comedy album but nothing earth-shattering. still a recommended listen though.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 21 January 2011 18:04 (fourteen years ago)

I got a little excited that someone else on ILX had heard of Buscemi until I saw it was you, n/a. He absolutely deserves the attention, though.

hannibal is great -- that's a sort of hedberg style that i actually dig

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Friday, 21 January 2011 22:55 (fourteen years ago)

Tompkins is brilliant imo -- up there with Patton Oswalt as one of the few comics working today who just seems like a wordsmith who could've done something interesting in any number of formats if he hadn't gone into standup

gosamosapodin simgibmelreel (some dude), Friday, 21 January 2011 23:02 (fourteen years ago)

the whole zombie, spaceship, wasteland theory just is boring imo

i thought it was clever and otm

not that im gonna read that shit or anything

David Warner (Princess TamTam), Friday, 21 January 2011 23:08 (fourteen years ago)

Loved his Comedy Central special last year.. that he made talking about his Mom's death somehow funny but really touching as well. I don't love his podcast but definitley like his standup.

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 21 January 2011 23:08 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, I wasn't expecting that turn in his last album where he goes into the thing about his mom. He made it funny, but you could tell that a millimeter under the surface he was still a complete mess about it.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 21 January 2011 23:13 (fourteen years ago)

xxp the part abt the 1st thing a creative teenager or w/e makes has to wipe out civilization in some way cuz they dont know shit abt paying taxes, etc is otm. the part, esp in the bill simmons podcast where he tries to classify any movie character or person as a zombie, spaceship, or wasteland is not clever or intriguing at all

johnny crunch, Friday, 21 January 2011 23:16 (fourteen years ago)

I need to check out more Kyle Kinane:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLs9ozsGFi0

Darin, Friday, 21 January 2011 23:19 (fourteen years ago)

Me too. That was great!

Johnny Fever, Friday, 21 January 2011 23:28 (fourteen years ago)

So I guess this Patton thing I'm going to tomorrow is a reading from the book. I kind of wish I hadn't told my friend to get me a ticket but how bad can it be? He was hysterical when I saw him on tour a couple years ago but somehow a book/reading signing just sounds kind of dreadful.

‎\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Friday, 21 January 2011 23:29 (fourteen years ago)

He'll probably still be kind of funny when he's not actually reading.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 21 January 2011 23:30 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah and, tbh, it's not like I have anything better going on tomorrow afternoon. Also, $5 iirc and I'm still hoping to find out that he brings Grumpus along to these sorts of things.

‎\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Friday, 21 January 2011 23:31 (fourteen years ago)

Love Kinane.
His racist stoner on Lopez was pretty lol

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 21 January 2011 23:35 (fourteen years ago)

i really dont like the youtubes that animate a comic's bit. they kind of take a lot of the imagination and open-endedness out of the bits for me.

I liked Dr. Katz tho for some reason, iirc?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 21 January 2011 23:35 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, don't let these threads ruin it for you. Hell, I'm still planning on getting his book regardless.

x-post

Ha ha - is Kinane a regular on Lopez?

Darin, Friday, 21 January 2011 23:37 (fourteen years ago)

Agreed about animated stand up. I searched forever to find a normal video of that bit.

Darin, Friday, 21 January 2011 23:39 (fourteen years ago)

I don't think he's a regular, pretty sure it was just a one off bit he did on Lopez. First and only time I ever willingly tuned in, lol

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 21 January 2011 23:43 (fourteen years ago)

Kinane, I mean. xpost.

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 21 January 2011 23:43 (fourteen years ago)

oh thank god

I wasn't going to bring it up but I was wondering why you were watching it tbh.

‎\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Friday, 21 January 2011 23:44 (fourteen years ago)

‎\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Friday, 21 January 2011 23:44 (fourteen years ago)

lol I realized after I posted it that it would make me look like a Lopez stan and I would like to clear my name of any such accusations

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 21 January 2011 23:45 (fourteen years ago)

You'll have to report back to us on Oswalt, ENBB! I'm sure he'll be good...I mean he's still great no matter what, it's just when you sit around and talk about all this kinda stuff gripes usually boil to the top a lot faster.

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 21 January 2011 23:46 (fourteen years ago)

i was just about to say patton suffering from some overcorrection here, he's a funny dude get psyched and go see him, no big whoop

tremendoid, Friday, 21 January 2011 23:48 (fourteen years ago)

I still find Patton to be incredibly funny, but he definitely has a safe zone he goes to where he'll throw together various versions of the same joke essentially. "Oh, I talked about zombies and tacos a minute ago? Well now I'll talk about klingons and twinkies."

Johnny Fever, Friday, 21 January 2011 23:49 (fourteen years ago)

x-post - No, I mean I am I'd just be more excited if it were an actual show. The book singing thing just seems sorta forced/weird but I'm sure it'll be good and will report back.

‎\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Friday, 21 January 2011 23:50 (fourteen years ago)

Off topic, another one of my faves: Maz Jobrani. Mad love for that guy.

Saw him years ago on the Axis of Evil comedy tour and he was the best by far. Was excited that he got the Maron interview too. He's a cool guy. I really like his 'cultural education' angle, where you come away actually learning some stuff as well as laughing your ass off.

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 21 January 2011 23:50 (fourteen years ago)

xpost now an Oswalt book singing I would see ;)

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 21 January 2011 23:51 (fourteen years ago)

oh g dammit but yeah, that would probably be something to behold

‎\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Friday, 21 January 2011 23:51 (fourteen years ago)

omar little, Friday, 21 January 2011 23:54 (fourteen years ago)

i realize that "my job" sounds like unemployment but it was for legal dept purposes.

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 21 January 2011 23:58 (fourteen years ago)

tremendoid, Saturday, 22 January 2011 00:03 (fourteen years ago)

the dude on comedy central presents right now is just being a straight up racist

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 22 January 2011 04:26 (fourteen years ago)

dear tom segura,

i hope you have a google alert set up for your name. not only is your stand up not funny, but you're being an asshole racist that isn't even telling jokes. oh, and doing a speedy gonzalez accent is not comedy.

anyway, you sucked

peace

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 22 January 2011 04:31 (fourteen years ago)

today I watched a movie called Heckler, which I thought might be one of those entertaining documentaries where comedians tell stories about their job, but it turned out to be Jamie Kennedy's insane passion project about the bad reviews his movies have gotten and how he basically considers hecklers and critics to be the same thing, it was really gross and depressing.

gosamosapodin simgibmelreel (some dude), Saturday, 22 January 2011 04:35 (fourteen years ago)

if you had told me to list adjectives to describe a new jamie kennedy movie, "gross" and "depressing" would've been so far down! at the top of the list

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 22 January 2011 04:37 (fourteen years ago)

now i want to see it! i've had the dvd in my store for like two bucks forever. hope its still there.

scott seward, Saturday, 22 January 2011 04:45 (fourteen years ago)

so is the "edgy" race shit all over the place or what? with white comedians. and who do you blame for it.

scott seward, Saturday, 22 January 2011 04:47 (fourteen years ago)

younger comedians must feel pressured to up the ante all the time. its hard to be shocking in a post-southpark/familyguy/chappelle/mr.show world.

and race is a really easy button to push.

scott seward, Saturday, 22 January 2011 04:53 (fourteen years ago)

i haven't gotten any sense that shocking/edgy/politically incorrect comedy is any more in vogue in standup right now than it has been at any other point in the last 20 years?

gosamosapodin simgibmelreel (some dude), Saturday, 22 January 2011 04:55 (fourteen years ago)

i really think after the Chappelle thing, race comedy really took off again

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 22 January 2011 04:59 (fourteen years ago)

Like after Chappelle quit, we had everyone trying to fill this void, so we get Mencia and Family Guy and Jeff Dunham and Chelsea Handler which was all the race jokes with none of the insight or humanity.

Lisa Lampanelli is clearly from the Rickles school so I fuck w/ her tho

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:00 (fourteen years ago)

lisa lampanelli is the best & she's also 100x more self-depreciating than any of those ppl you named

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:01 (fourteen years ago)

Mencia was definitely a deliberate attempt on Comedy Central's part to mold a new Chappelle. all those people have been around for a while doing that humor at varying levels of success though.

gosamosapodin simgibmelreel (some dude), Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:03 (fourteen years ago)

Lampanelli is ehhhh. been meaning to do a poll of comedy central roast regulars.

gosamosapodin simgibmelreel (some dude), Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:03 (fourteen years ago)

When I saw Jeff Dunham on TV in like 1993, I don't rrmember him having racist puppets. He had that Woozle

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:04 (fourteen years ago)

ha i would <3 that poll xp

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:04 (fourteen years ago)

Jeff Ross is obv the best, i'll save yo the trouble

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:07 (fourteen years ago)

i think Dunham blew a gasket after 9/11 and started with the dead terrorist stuff, he's like someone's goofy harmless-seeming uncle who one day starts spewing bigotry as soon as conversation turns to current events

xpost true Ross is the shit

gosamosapodin simgibmelreel (some dude), Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:08 (fourteen years ago)

i would probably vote for silverman or maybe giraldo (RIP)

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:09 (fourteen years ago)

best set ever tho is norm's next-next level bit on the saget roast

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:09 (fourteen years ago)

& then probably silverman during the pam roast

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:10 (fourteen years ago)

Giraldo was definitely one of the best

gosamosapodin simgibmelreel (some dude), Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:10 (fourteen years ago)

there are lots of choice moments on those roasts.

scott seward, Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:12 (fourteen years ago)

i can watch them more than once too. can't say that about everything.

scott seward, Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:12 (fourteen years ago)

we should have an ilx roast for LJ

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:12 (fourteen years ago)

that won't end well.

scott seward, Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:13 (fourteen years ago)

colin quinn is the best roaster imo. not sure if he's done any of the CC roasts tho.

big baller eating steaks every day (jeff), Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:13 (fourteen years ago)

altho my favorite part of any roast was when carrot top was on the dais and he started getting increasingly butthurt at people's zings of him & then the other comedians started going increasingly hard, god that was so funny

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:14 (fourteen years ago)

Carrot def held his own that night.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:16 (fourteen years ago)

there's a great bit in the Heckler movie where Jamie Kennedy and Carrot Top read reviews of each other's movies and have a butthurt therapy session

gosamosapodin simgibmelreel (some dude), Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:16 (fourteen years ago)

but old school and faux old school roast stuff is different. watching that tosh stand-up thing it defintely felt like he was tring to keep up in a post-silverman universe. and some people obviously are better suited for this kind of material. its just a style. lots of women wanted to be rita rudner once upon a time. you gotta keep up with the joneses.

scott seward, Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:18 (fourteen years ago)

oh rita rudner...

VegemiteGrrrl, Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:19 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i can see that. Tosh has always had a mean streak, though, for better or worse that's part of his appeal.

gosamosapodin simgibmelreel (some dude), Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:20 (fourteen years ago)

Silverman and Lampenelli have a serious bit of ironic distance to their race jokes; whereas like Mencia and Dunham and Tosh are so damn stupid that you think they kind of believe most stereotypes are actually real

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:21 (fourteen years ago)

DEE DEE DEE

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:21 (fourteen years ago)

Like when Silverman says "Black people steal" the subtext is that "its awful that people think this is true so it's shocking that I say this ." When Mencia says it, it's like, "I think it's really funny that stealing is a character trait we associate with black people"

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:23 (fourteen years ago)

scott seward, Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:54 (fourteen years ago)

there was a young nerdy weirdo comic on letterman tonight. doing the pathologically uncomfortable bit. and he was from indiana so letterman probably liked him. and he mentioned that he was from indiana cuz he was no dummy. really tame stuff. "quirky".

scott seward, Saturday, 22 January 2011 06:03 (fourteen years ago)

Like when Silverman says "Black people steal" the subtext is that "its awful that people think this is true so it's shocking that I say this ." When Mencia says it, it's like, "I think it's really funny that stealing is a character trait we associate with black people"

framing it like this makes me dislike Silverman more, because of the way she sells those kinds of jokes tbh

gosamosapodin simgibmelreel (some dude), Saturday, 22 January 2011 12:58 (fourteen years ago)

So Patton read three chapters which, to be totally honest, were sort of boring. The banter surrounding the actual reading and during the Q&A was pretty great. Overall he was really funny and came off as a really nice guy which is exactly what I would have expected. Also, watching the people lining up and in the audience was almost as entertaining as the event itself.

‎\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Saturday, 22 January 2011 23:10 (fourteen years ago)

so do guys have any fave trad dad comics? you know normal people who aren't pushing the envelope or whatever but who you find funny. i will admit to watching jim gaffigan's hot pockets thing on youtube more than once. and i always laugh! especially when he says "dead pockets..."

scott seward, Friday, 28 January 2011 16:44 (fourteen years ago)

so do YOU guys...

williamstevenjames (some dude), Friday, 28 January 2011 16:48 (fourteen years ago)

Gaffigan is a genius. His subject matters certainly do break any taboos, but his character and delivery and the amount of time he spends on these typical subjects. I saw him live and he spent a half hour on bowling, a half hour on camping.

feel like people are STILL stealing jokes from the old school observational dads like wayne cotter. who now, apparently, is known as a corporate comedian. hey, its a living. and he never got a big sitcom deal. i'm sure jerry and ray took bits from him. or what do i know. maybe he stole from them too.

contrflowvers-e (tremendoid), Friday, 28 January 2011 19:11 (fourteen years ago)

Ron White is probably the least dad comic of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour guys, or at least he's more avuncular than fatherly, but he probably counts, I like him.

williamstevenjames (some dude), Friday, 28 January 2011 19:15 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, Ron White is fine. Even Foxworthy and Engvall are okay when they don't get into slogan comedy. Dan Whitney should really consider retiring "Larry the Cable Guy" though.

Kathleen Madigan's recent Showtime special was really funny and kinda made me think of her as the female Ron White, since half her set's about alcoholism and she seemed to be slurring her words drunkenly a lot of the time

williamstevenjames (some dude), Friday, 28 January 2011 19:33 (fourteen years ago)

Southern accents reminded me of Henry Cho. He used to be around a lot more than he is now, but I've always found him funny.

williamstevenjames (some dude), Friday, 28 January 2011 19:35 (fourteen years ago)

I love Ron White; he's got a real mean edge to some of his stuff. He was on the Comedy Central roast of Jeff Foxworthy and his routine wasn't that great, but one of the other comedians said (I'm paraphrasing) "Ron White drinks so much that when he eats peanuts you can hear them splash into his stomach" and that cracked me up.

The Cash Cab guy has some decent material, but he also has a weird speech impediment which doesn't really become obvious until he's talking for a few minutes straight (that is, it's way more noticeable during a stand-up set than on Cash Cab).

that's not funny. (unperson), Friday, 28 January 2011 20:19 (fourteen years ago)

had never heard of cash cab til this month or so. he had some decent adlibs. what is the state of the art of game show emceeing? ray combs is still tugging at it from deep

charlie callas was silly. old school clown. hung with all the big boys for decades.

scott seward, Friday, 28 January 2011 21:57 (fourteen years ago)

ouch, forgot about this:

Johnny Carson was also impressed by Mr. Callas, inviting him to appear on the “Tonight” show nearly 50 times. Then came the night of Sept. 21, 1982.

With Mr. Callas bombing, Mr. Carson made a whistling-buzzing sound — as if tracing a bomb’s trajectory. In comic desperation, Mr. Callas leaned over and shoved Mr. Carson. Mr. Carson, almost always amiable on the air, was so annoyed that on the spot, in front of his television audience, he told Mr. Callas that he’d never appear on the show again. Mr. Carson kept his word.

VegemiteGrrrl, Saturday, 29 January 2011 01:02 (fourteen years ago)

Stories like that make me think Carson was a king prick. The way he had Joan Rivers blackballed from NBC over her talk show in the 80's was pretty terrible.

Darin, Saturday, 29 January 2011 03:09 (fourteen years ago)

He seemed like it was more of being rigidly principled. Like "these are my rules and woe if you cross them". I mean, the Rivers blackballing was pretty bad, but from where he stood she betrayed him by trying to go out on her own. Dude seemed very, very black and white, friendship or no.

VegemiteGrrrl, Saturday, 29 January 2011 03:17 (fourteen years ago)

I don't think he was a prick. Maybe just hard to get close to.

VegemiteGrrrl, Saturday, 29 January 2011 03:18 (fourteen years ago)

Not like I know, or anything. Just kind of the feeling I get from him, and what I've read.

I enjoyed El Chupacabra on a live multi-performer CDR but the character is a bit too me-no-rikey for me to totally relax into; BB stays just this side of the line - the pleasure comes from hearing him stay in pace, not merely improvving and reacting and feeding the scene in character, but managing to keep making discretely funny malaprops of what "BB" means to be saying at the same time

http://www.deadline.com/2011/03/comedy-central-developing-evil-genius-comedy-starring-paul-f-tompkins/

omedy Central has put in development Evil Genius, a high-concept scripted comedy starring actor-comedian Paul F. Tompkins. The show, which Tompkins will write with Tom Scharpling (Monk), stars Tompkins as Professor Tiberius Lynch, an evil genius who has successfully taken over the world, achieving global domination. The only problem is -- what should he do next? Being a genius doesn't make it easier to navigate the everyday situations of office life, especially when that office is responsible for running absolutely everything on Earth. Lynch must contend with the quirks and foibles of his cohorts as well as the demands of the entire population of the planet, trying to pull off the ultimate balancing act.

Tompkins and Scharpling are executive producing Evil Genius with Avalon Television's David Martin, John Thoday and Richard Allen Turner. Tompkins, repped by CAA and Avalon Management, hosted VH1's Best Week Ever. Scharpling is with Rothman Brecher.

I kinda like Todd Glass

His Comedy Central standup from like 10 years ago was incredible. Like, nearly a perfect blend of great jokes and dry meta-humor. He mocked other comics in a Neil Hamburger type way but really was funny besides. I got his two stand up discs and they're pretty terrible. The first one has bits of that routine as well as a bunch of fake songs and bits that don't even try to be funny. On his second one he basically just loses his edge entirely and talks about some pretty awkward subjects. But I have to listen to that one again. Weird guy and I hope he finds work.

His new stand up is pretty good but he really gets off on the wrong foot. One of his first jokes was about how illegal immigrants should be able to serve on jury duty so that criminals can truly be judged by "a jury of their peers"...I can see finding that funny, but my wife is Mexican and needless to say she really DID NOT like that at all. You really have to be on board with his persona to not get pissed at his shtick. That said, he seems to understand the way comedy works better than 90% of the comedians working today.

ℯℳℴ ❤\(◕~◕✿ (some dude), Wednesday, 6 April 2011 11:43 (fourteen years ago)

also when in doubt go w/ a woman -- for some reason most of the best CC specials i've seen lately have been lady comics

"It’s a very odd thing with Hollywood, where you do stand-up, you’re good at it, then they go, “How would you like to be a horrible actor?” Then you say, “All right, that sounds good. I’ll do that.” So I’m fucking excited about not having to pretend to know what I’m doing with acting, because it really is nerve-racking. It really is so humiliating. If it wasn’t so pointless and ridiculous, it would be more humiliating, you know? Also, if there weren’t so many people as bad as myself—equally untalented people—it would be even more humiliating."

sounds like he and louis ck are kindred spirits in that respect. which is sad because i really liked louis ck's acting in parks and rec!

Louis CK's riffing on acting in that episode of his show with Matthew Broderick, where he plays the cop who has to tell Broderick that his grandfather's dead, and he tries all these different deliveries, including one where he shrugs his shoulders and places his palms up and asks inquisitively "I'm sorry you're grandfather's dead?" or something was one of the funniest things I've ever seen on TV.

dan selzer, Thursday, 14 April 2011 04:17 (fourteen years ago)

Norm just seems like he is incredibly uncomfortable with fame and the expectations of it, like he's been doing a lot of radio and podcasts for the show and there's certain interviews where you just know "he fucking hates this" and so he does the non-sequitur Norm stuff to make the host as uncomfortable as he is. I like that about him. He's just a guy who is good at being funny who would rather not deal with any of the other bullshit...let him be funny, and that's it. I find him really intriguing.

Him and Louis...it's funny that they're both these old school guys who work hard at their craft, who are so loved and are finally maybe making their careers out of "Hi. I have no artifice." it's kinda cool,

Going to see Hannibal Buress perform at a bar on Friday. Should be interesting!

Really enjoyed Norm's hour special on Comedy Central. His first fifteen minutes is about his relative dying of cancer! Who leads with that? Haha

Never saw it...is it re-airing anytime soon?

Loved the first episode of Norm's new Sports Show...it already seems to be a lot better than "Sportsdome", which was kinda funny but really unlikeable

i put that on my sub (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 18 April 2011 19:08 (fourteen years ago)

i'm trying to soldier through Jeffrey Ross's special and it's soooo hit or miss. There's these complete knock-em-out-of-the-park lolz ("The Newark Airport is like the Newark of airports") totally pressed up against groanworthy rmde duds ("I know 50 Cent's cousin, two for a quarter")

I'd love to see Norm's new stand up unedited. I remember thinking while watching it on Comedy Central, "good god, he's done 10 minutes on what he'd do with a body if he killed a woman".

Darin, Monday, 18 April 2011 19:21 (fourteen years ago)

I like Jeselnik's comedy. Never heard of the rape thing. I think Morgan Murphy is his flatmate? Not that it means anything, but he's got a pretty good reputation in the community I think.

The show that was cancelled a few weeks ago is rescheduled for July so I'm hoping to do just that.

ENBB, Monday, 18 April 2011 19:25 (fourteen years ago)

The Jeselnik thing:

I was on the phone with her one night and I had Comedy Central on in the background and his Presents special was on. She asked me what I was watching, and I told her. She said WHAT? So she flipped over to Comedy Central, saw it was the same Anthony Jeselnik and then told me the story. She didn't seem too phased by it, so I guess he wasn't some wild animal or anything. Just that she had to say no about 20 times before he finally got the message.

Anyway, enough gossip.

Talking Funny finally wound up on the webz and I just got done watching. Agree that the way they all lost it at the end of the "Sittin' on a cock cos I'm gay" riffing was the highlight. Ricky Gervais is a terrible panel host/moderator, though, and I typically like him in other situations. And poor Chris Rock kept getting ignored.

Looking forward to the next one, which will at least feature Jon Stewart if the promise made on The Daily Show is kept.

Late to party but finally watched Talking Funny. The thing that stood out to me most was how Gervais' perceptions of comedy, of audiences, of his own material really set him apart as the "newbie" from the other three. It was very telling, how new to standup he was, even though he has been around comedy writing for a long time. It was interesting. Reminded me of conversations between say, acting students and say a seasoned actor....the actor has a hard time conveying to the student about feeling, and instinct, and trusting yourself and the student is so caught up in the mental mechanics. It was interesting to watch.

Yeah and them all collectively losing it over the sitting on a cock cos I'm gay bit was priceless. Liked that Rock goes to the theaters himself "what if they kidnap me" lol

gervais was so fucking annoying on "talking funny" that i almost didn't make it to the end. how many times was seinfeld, louis or chris on the verge of saying something or making a point when gervais cuts them off to expound on some very half-baked idea of his? or do his weird fake laugh? you're there to LISTEN, ricky. jesus i wanted to strange the shit out of him. maybe that's just how he is. but like, no matter how famous he is or whatever, if he were acting like that at a party and i was sitting at his table i would just need to leave. shit is just intolerable.

Haven't read this whole thread so apologies if this has been covered, but do any of you actually perform stand-up? My friend is going for it as a serious hobby. She's a freelance journalist with three kids, but managed to get in 30+ gigs over the last two years or so. She has some interesting theories about the prerequisites for success.

ljubljana, Saturday, 28 May 2011 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

This was the year when I was gonna try out for Last Comic Standing but I guess it's not coming back on... I don't know.

I have no experience whatsoever but I save halfbaked stand up jokes on my phone in case of a sudden tv opportunity.

Best of luck to your friend

Muttley vs. Mumbly (CaptainLorax), Saturday, 28 May 2011 20:51 (fourteen years ago)

She has some interesting theories about the prerequisites for success.

What are these theories?

Lorax you should start a thread where you try out your material on us.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Saturday, 28 May 2011 21:16 (fourteen years ago)

Theories (possibly much more interesting to someone who knows her in person):

- a really *credible*self-caricature is the most difficult thing. Ideally you need to establish that very quickly, let people believe in it, then move on to talk about other things.

You have to "own" what you put out there -- you have the chance to say absolutely anything you want and it's your responsibility. But you can't think about that too much as you need to be able to experiment and do stuff that is potentially rubbish to find out what works. She thinks this is kind of the opposite of her day job, journalism: in journalism you put something out there that is quite controlled, that is not really your creation, that is a collaboration, i.e. has been commissioned and sub-edited.

ljubljana, Saturday, 28 May 2011 22:51 (fourteen years ago)

That's interesting! I like hearing anyone talk about their crafts but I think standups are esp. interesting, amateur or pro. That is what I liked best about "Talking Funny." Also, on a less virtuoso level, watching "I Am Comic" on Netflix watch instant was interesting – that one has a good depiction of just the daily grind of the standup world.

free inappropriate education (Abbbottt), Sunday, 29 May 2011 23:08 (fourteen years ago)

some of the reasons i most like hearing podcasts is kinda the behind the scenes stuff of comedians talking abt what works or how they try stuff out...idk...i absolutely love doug bensons joke abt bank of america around the time of the "economic collapse" where he sez their slogan should be "B of A, be very of aye" and they he sez i dont even know if thats funny or w/e

hannibal buress, been digging him, kinda. i think podcasts, guys fucking around with online stuff... i've sort of started digging standup but am still put off by the overall lameness of a lot of stuff. it just seems like these guys are funny as hell but completely unenjoyable when they're into their routines. either because the routines suck or the writing is solid but the delivery sucks.... this is my problem.

i'm watching a lil bit of Wyatt Cenac and Michael Ian Black's specials on Comedy Central.

I talked to Stanhope earlier this year and he was bitching about how fake all CC stuff seems and it's really hitting home with these specials. Cenac and Black are two dudes with off-beat, conversational styles that play like Union Hall, which holds like 150 ppl max ; and here they are on TV playing to THE GIANT GUFFAWING CROWD of philly's 1,200-seat trocadero or whatever.

CC is really trying to elevate these indie-ish cats to the level of rock stars and it doesnt hold weight. Like these kind of OK, low-energy jokes just getting buckets of laughter. I really think these shows would be much funnier in a smaller room where they can vibe with the audience. RIP Carolines Comedy Hour/A&E's Evening At The Improv/MTV's Half-Hour Comedy Hour type ish...

nick kroll's cc special was cringesome and ilhim on CDR

couldn't even get halfway through Norm's

Circlesquare du Soleil (sic), Sunday, 21 August 2011 14:00 (fourteen years ago)

Stanhope isn't really that funny, but perhaps he's a smart guy. I really don't know. And I never compared him to Hitler ffs. He's just not my cup of tea 99% of the time.

Too bad Louis CK has a low profile abroad, because he's right in that sliver of time only some comedians ever arrive at where he can virtually do no wrong and no one is better at the craft than he is right now. That time will pass—probably soon—but I'm enjoying being a witness to it.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 21 August 2011 18:03 (fourteen years ago)

Stanhope is hilarious imo

polyphonic, Sunday, 21 August 2011 18:35 (fourteen years ago)

I just don't like his whole decadance thing onstage ("watch me drink all this beer and smoke all these cigarettes while pretend to get fucked up before your eyes" and whatever). It distracts me from the half of his bits that I might find funny or, at the least, amusing.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 21 August 2011 18:39 (fourteen years ago)

Stanhope's shrill libertarian vibe flys in the face of the reigning indie comic aesthetic of Mirman/Schall/Showalter/Tig/Hodgman/Galifoniakis etc which is basically friendly indie rock cuddlefun. since comedy is so OMG PERSONAL, the more urbane/iPad-owning 'Mericans who support indie comedy are terrified at the prospect of supporting someone who isn't EXACTLY LIKE THEM. (cf. the backflips ppl do to listen to Tyler The Creator). I don't agree/relate with half of what Stanhope says, but i still think he's funny as fuck and a really great comic.

Lil Boosie's on the Up (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 21 August 2011 19:12 (fourteen years ago)

yeah otm; i find him, more and more, 'difficult', & beyond feeling obliged to feel awkward about some of the bits feel genuinely unsure + uncomfortable about them, but that he's at least trying to make his point is pretty evident, & he has good arguments even if they're mired in a lot of bad territory. the decadence onstage thing is probably a thing sure but the transformation he goes through from being the weariest guy alive at the start to the most animated, drenched & exasperated objector at the end is pretty compelling, is more than 'watch me get fucked up', i think.

hey whiney, were you interviewing him or just shooting the shit?

couldn't watch that full video, but based on what that guy looks like, i'm gonna go with "yes"

J0rdan S., Friday, 26 August 2011 18:32 (fourteen years ago)

My favorite part is the comments section is multiple people claiming every part of the story that wasn't rapey is fabricated, but insisting the rapey parts are true

brrr-icane aye-rene (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 26 August 2011 18:40 (fourteen years ago)

this guy is "next level" as fuck

frogbs, Friday, 26 August 2011 18:50 (fourteen years ago)

btw regarding Stanhope; I always felt like he was a lot smarter than guys like David Cross or Patton, but maybe not as funny overall. He does give me a Bill Hicks vibe but he hasn't had the benefit of the revisionist "misunderstood genius" label

frogbs, Friday, 26 August 2011 18:51 (fourteen years ago)

I always felt like pretty much every decent comic is smarter than David Cross

some dude, Friday, 26 August 2011 19:23 (fourteen years ago)

I know I've said it before (maybe even in this thread?), but David Cross is an ace sketch/tv guy and a horrible, terrible stand-up.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 26 August 2011 19:42 (fourteen years ago)

Aw, I like Cross.

brrr-icane aye-rene (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 26 August 2011 19:48 (fourteen years ago)

i've always found him rather annoying in general but he gets a pass for life for tobias fünke

J0rdan S., Friday, 26 August 2011 19:49 (fourteen years ago)

xxp - that's really OTM, I actually did kinda like his first stand-up disc for a while until I realized that basically all his targets were low-hanging fruit. A lot of comedians do the "asshole" shtick but Cross goes after a lot of people who are ultimately well-meaning and haven't done anything wrong, which always left me with a bad taste in my mouth. There's a part in his second disc where an audience member calls him out on one of his jokes and he responds something like "yes, it's true, I don't actually believe that, it's what's called a joke, I'll be telling lots of them tonight", which is kind of funny but also undermines his entire show in a way and gives him a huge "I am above the audience and everyone else" vibe which is appalling. That said his storytelling is generally fairly funny and yeah his Mr. Show and Arrested Development stuff was always top notch. Really a frustrating comedian because I can't give him the Dane Cook/Carlos Mencia/Jeff Dunham label of "I really hate this guy", and I'll always be interested in whatever he does, but I just kinda fundamentally dislike him.

frogbs, Friday, 26 August 2011 19:54 (fourteen years ago)

I dig his stand-up, and think about particular bits all the time. He isn't a great craftsman but he's still funny.

polyphonic, Friday, 26 August 2011 19:56 (fourteen years ago)

That video is pretty horrible. Thanks WGW! :/

your mom the burrito (ENBB), Friday, 26 August 2011 20:03 (fourteen years ago)

david cross is like the worst ever standup people think is good. but he is a pretty awesome comic actor.

A B C, Friday, 26 August 2011 20:10 (fourteen years ago)

i don't necessarily think he's a great comic actor but he's definitely funnier when he's not himself

some dude, Friday, 26 August 2011 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

also, the comments on that splitsider article are surprisingly not bad coming from the Internet Alternative Comedy Community which is pretty much aspies who latched onto kids in the hall instead of discworld

A B C, Friday, 26 August 2011 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

by "pretty awesome" i mean i lol looking at the animated gif of him crashing through the second-floor decorative fencing as mrs. featherbottom. if i were a little kid i bet i would have good memories of him as whatever he does in alvin and the cmunks.

A B C, Friday, 26 August 2011 20:12 (fourteen years ago)

Honestly I haven't really heard him referred to as a great stand-up since like 2004 so maybe the backlash is catching up to him

frogbs, Friday, 26 August 2011 20:14 (fourteen years ago)

his last cd was p dire imo

brrr-icane aye-rene (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 26 August 2011 20:41 (fourteen years ago)

yeah I'm not even interested in hearing it, so I guess I'm over him.
could pretty much say the same about Patton Oswalt too at this point

frogbs, Friday, 26 August 2011 20:44 (fourteen years ago)

Now that Patton has a baby to talk about, I could tune him out easily.

But basically, anyone can write a Patton Oswalt joke. Just include a fatty food, a sci-fi reference and a sound effect in some order along with a few other words and VOILA!

Johnny Fever, Friday, 26 August 2011 20:50 (fourteen years ago)

(That sounds like I don't like Patton, but I do...or did).

Johnny Fever, Friday, 26 August 2011 20:50 (fourteen years ago)

The bit about the standup named "Dr. Pepper" is amazing but otherwise I can't think of too much else he does that makes me laugh.

I've heard a lot of people going nuts about his KFC bit about the "failure bowl" but IMO this is kind of the crux of why I don't really find him that funny

frogbs, Friday, 26 August 2011 20:54 (fourteen years ago)

oswalt at least has the wit and vocabulary to pull off the angry aging alt thing, unlike cross

some dude, Friday, 26 August 2011 20:55 (fourteen years ago)

yeah but he uses so many 80's references as a crutch, nearly approaching Seth MacFarlane territory.

now that I think about it, Seth MacFarlane may be the anti-David Cross, I can't really stand any of the stuff he's done for TV, but I would imagine he'd do really well as a stand-up

frogbs, Friday, 26 August 2011 20:58 (fourteen years ago)

I realize hosting a roast on Comedy Central isn't exactly the same as doing stand-up, but MacFarlane was a stiff as a host.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 26 August 2011 21:00 (fourteen years ago)

I can see that but I actually thought he did pretty well and definitely has the personality and delivery to pull it off.

frogbs, Friday, 26 August 2011 21:02 (fourteen years ago)

yeah macfarlane has decent stage presence, he just looks totally creepy and beady-eyed, especially when he sings

some dude, Friday, 26 August 2011 21:11 (fourteen years ago)

my favorite part of the roast was the Situation telling him, "actually, you're lookin' good, bro!"
he definitely looks a little too "colored in", you know, like weirdly bronzed with blindingly white teeth

frogbs, Friday, 26 August 2011 21:13 (fourteen years ago)

yeah it can look weird when people get absurdly rich and famous for reasons that have nothing to do with their looks and they start getting really tan and fit but still fundamentally not very good looking and now kind of fake and tacky to boot

some dude, Friday, 26 August 2011 21:18 (fourteen years ago)

good for frogbs for using the world "colored" in a post in a non-offensive manner!

J0rdan S., Friday, 26 August 2011 21:20 (fourteen years ago)

low-hanging fruit

A B C, Friday, 26 August 2011 21:22 (fourteen years ago)

alternatively: good for frogbs for using the phrase "failure bowl" to refer to something besides the vagina of an unattractive, desperate lesbian

A B C, Friday, 26 August 2011 21:23 (fourteen years ago)

i'm laughing a little too hard at that right now

frogbs, Friday, 26 August 2011 21:25 (fourteen years ago)

DW: I was always a fan of the old-style comics. I loved vaudeville. I loved Milton Berle, Dick Shawn, Phyllis Diller, Don Rickles, Charlie Callas, all those guys. Hilarious. I love the Bing Crosby and Bob Hope movies, and Abbott & Costello. My television influences were Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Benny Hill, and Hee Haw. When I was a kid, the first album I bought was A Wild And Crazy Guy by Steve Martin. Either A Wild And Crazy Guy or Let’s Get Small. Whichever one came out in 1977. Always loved Steve Martin, because that’s my type of humor. Very goofy and stupid jokes, but a lot of cleverness as well. That’s a good mix.

Mordy, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 13:49 (fourteen years ago)

Cross has been funny when I've seen him open for bands, but I'm a sucker for a guy with a taped-on rabbi beard talking about Middle East carnage

incredibly middlebrow (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 14:14 (fourteen years ago)

i think cross is a legitimately great comic performer with a great comic sensibility, but somehow his stand-up always feels like it doesn't live up to his talent. it feels kinda low-effort. i think he's still above average though and has done some really funny bits. when it came to mr show i always thought of him as 'the actor' and bob as 'the writer' though they're both strong in both areas.

American comedian Patrice O’Neal has suffered a stroke at the age of 41.

The news was broken by comedian Jim Norton on digital radio’s Opie and Anthony Show – a comedy show on which O’Neal was a regular.

Norton told listeners: ‘We wanted it to come from us. We don’t know how he is. We don’t know how he’s going to be. I didn’t want to do this by myself. I wish we had more news for you.'

dan selzer, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 19:35 (fourteen years ago)

I feel like that list is kind of safe and predictable, way too white and/or male, and almost nullified by having David Cross at #12. As my coworker pointed out just now, no Moms Mabley?!

Also, Marc Maron spells his name with a "c" and not a "k".

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 19:55 (fourteen years ago)

Also, as much as I love the early Cosby records, not making Himself the Cosby pick (and, therefore, #1) seems like some contrary shit.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 19:56 (fourteen years ago)

Honestly shocked that no pre-burn Pryor made the list, particularly Wanted.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 19:58 (fourteen years ago)

was gonna reply on twitter to troll about only 1.5 of the albums featuring comediennes but i couldn't think of any awesome female-helmed comedy albums that should have made the list instead. also maybe it's preconception bias because i know whiney on ilx but it seems overly focused on the "angry" comedians.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 19:58 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, the Pryor choice surprised me too. I get that it's the most personal of his albums, and comedy isn't always funny, but I think the meat of Pryor's legacy is his early material...character creation, voicework, etc. The Sunset Strip album is the work of a funny celebrity and less of a comedian.

The lack of seriously funny women in comedy is something that bothers the hell out of me. There should be a whole thread dedicated to good comediennes because I need some recommendations! I hate even admitting this but my I really don't find that many comediennes funny. It's obviously not that I don't think women can be funny. I think it's something about stand-up not being the best medium for women to exhibit their talent as funny ppl. I'm sure it's deeper than that. Maybe I should start a thread. Of course you could always give me recs here. Don't say Bamford or Silverman pls.

Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:12 (fourteen years ago)

Silverman can be extremely funny though, when she's not being extremely irritating.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:14 (fourteen years ago)

Oh and I didn't mean that n/a would agree with me on that. For all I know there are tons of comediennes you like just none that have released albums. You just made me think about how much it bothers me that none of my favorite funny people are women. :(

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:23 (fourteen years ago)

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:27 (fourteen years ago)

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:28 (fourteen years ago)

A good third of what makes Wanda Sykes funny to me is just her speaking voice. The jokes are definitely there, but there's inherent humor in just listening to her.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:29 (fourteen years ago)

I thought maybe I was exaggerating her voice work in my head, but no:

The Adventures of Brer Rabbit (voice)

Loved Janeane on the Ben Stiller Show, which in and of itself is so sadly underrated. I mean, I know Stiller hasn't been funny in ages, but that show had some all-time moments. His fantastic cast helped.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:44 (fourteen years ago)

Update: it's still there. Janeane Garofalo: Live in Seattle (2010). Nothing special, but feels like an old friend coming to visit.

Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:46 (fourteen years ago)

i like chelsea peretti, who writes for parks & rec now

vitameatawalloginavegamin (donna rouge), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:48 (fourteen years ago)

I have no idea what that means? I will check her out.

That list is sort of interesting though. Lots of stuff I should have seen but haven't and am excited to seek out. Like the Murphy album at #3 is funnier than Delirious? I don't know if I can handle that. Also, this has nothing to do with anything really but he was on the list and I love him - Mel B. used to eat at my parents' old restaurant in the 70s/80s with A. Bancroft and according to my mom he is one of the funniest and nicest ppl she's ever met. Not that that's surprising but I always found it interesting and sort of neat.

Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:51 (fourteen years ago)

oh - x-post

Anyway - TY all. I am looking forward to checking out all these womens. Keep them coming if you think of any more recs.

Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:52 (fourteen years ago)

Comedian is the audio version of the Delirious movie/video. xps

Also, Kristen Schaal is fantastic fwiw.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:54 (fourteen years ago)

Oh yeah, Schaal is great. Also, speaking of Parks & Rec, I really like Aubrey Plaza.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:55 (fourteen years ago)

lol - Oh! I didn't realize that (re: Comedian/Delirious). Is that Mel from FotC?

Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:55 (fourteen years ago)

Yes it is.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:58 (fourteen years ago)

Jen Kirkman is great, yeah!

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 21:00 (fourteen years ago)

Stewart Lee, Paul F Tompkins, Kyle Kinane, and Hannibal Burress would have made appearances in my top 40.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 21:00 (fourteen years ago)

Lol sorry, I meant sorta cute & Midwesterny, yknow, "down home"...fail. She's orig from Wisconsin, sounds & looks like a lovely favorite aunt. But she's kinda wacky. I love her to bits.

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 21:04 (fourteen years ago)

Also, as much as I love the early Cosby records, not making Himself the Cosby pick (and, therefore, #1) seems like some contrary shit.

just chiming in to say, that Bill Cosby album is amazing; I cracked up just looking at the cover due to childhood memories

http://open.spotify.com/album/5YYm44WdWrAFaB6Rftcwll

I'd have a difficult time picking a Cosby album, they're all incredible

he carried yellow flowers (DJP), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 21:08 (fourteen years ago)

Oh yeah, I love almost every Bill Cosby album, but maybe Himself was just a right-time-right-place thing for me or maybe it really is his most fully formed routine/album. Whatever the reason, I can almost recite it front to back.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 21:10 (fourteen years ago)

I'd probably pick Very Funny Fellow, maybe? Himself is fantastic too though

he carried yellow flowers (DJP), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 21:13 (fourteen years ago)

ENBB - check out Karen Kilgariff too, she's really funny.

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 21:17 (fourteen years ago)

I've probably only heard 15 of the 40 on the SPIN list in their entirety -- and none after McCulloch's in '95 -- but yeah, Live on the Sunset Strip is not EVEN CLOSE to Pryor's best. Haven't listened to the Cosbys in forever but Brother Russell is a splendid #1, as 2000 Year Old Man or Nichols & May would be.

Dennis Miller and Dice, gtfo. Murphy too.

I think funny women thrive in formats other than standup, who knows why -- Tomlin did a sort one one-woman revue rather than standup for nearly all her live gigs far as I know. Brett Butler was a really ace standup before she made her bucks as a sitmom.

Dr Morbois de Bologne (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 21:31 (fourteen years ago)

The life of the road comic does not seem particularly inviting to women, for one.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 21:35 (fourteen years ago)

and I'm sure you guys noticed, about 10 of those 40 are not standup albums, but studio ones.

Dr Morbois de Bologne (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 21:37 (fourteen years ago)

well, the list was "comedy albums", not "standup albums"

he carried yellow flowers (DJP), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 21:42 (fourteen years ago)

So glad the Dick Gregory album is on Spotify. I've been meaning to listen to a whole album of his for 20 years, but never got around to it.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 21:44 (fourteen years ago)

i've heard some firesign theater stuff at work (they came to our radio station a bunch back in the '70s) and man, idgi

vitameatawalloginavegamin (donna rouge), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 21:46 (fourteen years ago)

so happy to see Bruce McCulloch on that list, Shame-Based Man is like my all-time favorite comedy LP. have we ever had a thread for that on ILM or anything? maybe i should start one.

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 22:20 (fourteen years ago)

There was a "100 great comedy albums" thread or something, but it's never been polled.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 22:31 (fourteen years ago)

i don't think a poll would be any fun tbh.

last comic standing has been pretty good the last few years with finding funny female comics: rachel feinstein, iliza shlesinger, amy schumer (full disclosure, i knew amy briefly in college, but i really am impressed at how good a comic she's become)

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Thursday, 3 November 2011 00:37 (fourteen years ago)

i think some kind of comedy poll would be cool. maybe not albums but actual comedians?

Mordy, Thursday, 3 November 2011 00:38 (fourteen years ago)

eh i dunno, maybe? i kind of like how this thread is very casual and subjective and not at all about listmaking or canon-building. also every 'greatest comic' list ever seems really confused about whether to judge comics purely by their standup or also include their movie/sitcom/sketch/etc. work.

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Thursday, 3 November 2011 00:42 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm not really into a poll on this subject. Hard to believe, I know, because I'm down for polling almost anything.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 November 2011 01:02 (fourteen years ago)

Amy Schumer writes such well-crafted jokes. Very few wasted words.

polyphonic, Thursday, 3 November 2011 01:36 (fourteen years ago)

I like Jen Kirkland (who I know mainly through Tompkins) but I think she's pretty hit or miss. I think all the women who have been mentioned (the ones I know, at least) have moments but none of them have blown me away. I think Morbs might be on to something about the format which is was what I was sort of getting at in my original post. Anyway, don't know Schumer either but will investigate.

Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Thursday, 3 November 2011 01:44 (fourteen years ago)

i haven't seen jen kirkman's standup but i love drunk history so much

it's definitely true that even as women have gotten more and more respect in tv/film comedy standup is still as much a man's game as it ever was. i think part of that might be a lifestyle thing if i may be a little broadly stereotypical, that whole months on the road thing seems to appeal more to guys as far as musicians go too.

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Thursday, 3 November 2011 01:57 (fourteen years ago)

i've heard some firesign theater stuff at work (they came to our radio station a bunch back in the '70s) and man, idgi

Me neither, I don't think I ever made it through an entire album side. But they were big faves of the student council stoner contingent in 1978.

Dr Morbois de Bologne (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 3 November 2011 16:01 (fourteen years ago)

Firesign's records are really spotty, but I think when they're at their best it's kind of a different thing than simply "jokes." It's absurdist theater, filled with cutural and literary allusions, puns and wordplay.

Blue Doggie Sweater (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 3 November 2011 16:20 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, exactly. I love Firesign myself (and Dwarf was exactly the right choice here) but man, sometimes you really have to work at the albums to pull full enjoyment out of them - they were the prog rock of comedy, really not the best choice for someone looking for quick hits of funny.

Glad the Cos is at #1 here because at his peak he was hilarious - got into a huge discussion with a coworker who just hated him because all he knew was the Cosby-Show-era mug-o-rama, and could not possibly conceive of a world where THAT GUY was one of the funniest guys on the planet. I have to admit that by the time Himself came around (and yeah, I enjoyed it too), it was really hard to reconcile that with the same guy who put out 200MPH.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 3 November 2011 17:30 (fourteen years ago)

lol 200 MPH actually the first album that came to mind as an alternate #1 but I was thinking maybe I was overrating it due to nostalgia

btw as far as I can tall all of the major Cosby albums are on Spotify

dense macabre (DJP), Thursday, 3 November 2011 17:32 (fourteen years ago)

Listening to 200 MPH right now.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 November 2011 17:33 (fourteen years ago)

Haha, I don't necessarily think 200MPH is his best, but possibly one of his edgiest from the early days. I'm not even sure which of the earlier ones I'd pick as my fave because they're all wonderful(ness).

Whiney - was Tom Lehrer even in contention here? He definitely would have been in my top 40.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 3 November 2011 17:36 (fourteen years ago)

Also E=MO^2

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 3 November 2011 19:10 (fourteen years ago)

firesign records work best with good headphones. its theatre of the mind, man!

scott seward, Thursday, 3 November 2011 19:15 (fourteen years ago)

i think i have all their records. and even solo and duo firesign records.

scott seward, Thursday, 3 November 2011 19:15 (fourteen years ago)

prog comedy! as Mort Sahl (ABSENT!) said, the kind that wasn't funny.

Dr Morbois de Bologne (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 3 November 2011 19:21 (fourteen years ago)

w/out clicking again, I'm guessing the Spin list was limited to one per artist? cuz otherwise there should be four Pryors, three Cosbys, two Nichols & Mays, two NatLamps (Lemmings?), etc.

Dr Morbois de Bologne (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 3 November 2011 19:28 (fourteen years ago)

i actually find firesign stuff funny. and i don't even listen to them high. but i liked them when i was a kid and i guess its a nostalgia thing. i love the radio play thing.

scott seward, Thursday, 3 November 2011 19:32 (fourteen years ago)

For sure, they can be really funny even if you're not into the whole drug culture thing they mined throughout. I find it hard to imagine people listening to the Nick Danger bit that took up the entire side of Two Places at Once and saying "where are the jokes?"

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 3 November 2011 22:20 (fourteen years ago)

five months pass...

I don't get CC (or any other cable or TV) anymore, but I saw Kyle Kinane last summer in LA and he was exceptional. Not exactly what I think of as standup (thank God).

World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Monday, 9 April 2012 17:42 (thirteen years ago)

I love him. I accidentally got to hang out with him after a gig last year and he's really a cool guy. He was incredibly drunk at the time, so the fact that I still left with the impression that he was lovely seemed like something of an achievement.

But the way he makes his storytelling seem so effortless, when it's really obviously crafted pretty meticulously...however he does it, I hope he keeps doing it for a long time.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 9 April 2012 18:15 (thirteen years ago)

one month passes...

Pandora does standup now! But I'm not sure the format works because listening to single bits by a variety of comics somehow doesn't work. i.e. Louis CK, Mitch Hedberg, David Cross, Patton Oswalt, not very funny. Anybody have a good way of using this effectively?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 4 June 2012 04:33 (thirteen years ago)

Hannibal Buress ‏@hannibalburess

People say that I'm biting Mitch Hedberg's style but this whole time I've been channeling Ma$e.

EASILY the greatest of all time. i went to the comedy cellar for the first time a couple months ago and it was actually touching to see ppl had written "GOAT" all over every photo of patrice, and only patrice. his death affected me the most out of anyone 'famous' who ever died during my lifetime, even more than gandolfini.

if he had lived through these last cpl years i 100% think we'd be seeing campaigns to disappear him from public accessibility and erase his legacy, and the sad thing is they'd probably succeed.
