I was partial to old.css at first, but now I use blueski-2.css for better readability.

i use old.css because it looks the least suspicious at work

not that it matters but I just noticed the bookmarking function in naus.css doesn't work

I might use naus.css from now on

I particularly like block quotes, which I was never happy with on the original stuff I did some years ago. I think they are better not being indented, but being highlighted in a different way.

my only comment is that the header font (ILX NEW ANSWERS, or WHICH STYLESHEET DO YOU USE IN 2011? for this page) could be just a bit smaller. still, i like it and i'll probably keep using it as is. thanks keith!

Also, it looks different on Windows and OSX, because of the different installed fonts on these systems. I tried to make it good fonts irrespective, but it does mean they are possibly quite different. Windows uses Franklin Gothic Book, but OSX looks like this:

Trying out swiss.css, and I'm not seeing any difference between clicked and unclicked links. Is there nothing in the sheet for that?

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Sunday, 4 November 2012 01:38 (thirteen years ago)

Swiss is cool! A little softer on the eyes without losing the basic clarity and punchiness of ILX. Agreed that the thread title (and "Site New Answers") could be much smaller, and I would at least slightly shrink the various things in the "Add a Post" box - no way does "Display Name: whoever" need to be so big....

Could maybe also fold the show/hide formatting help option into the Add a Post box, as another button next to "Convert Simple HTML to BBcode"? Just a thought.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 4 November 2012 01:47 (thirteen years ago)

Also wonder if something more dreamy and Wayne's World Flashback-y could come in with the "Three Years Pass..." breaks between revives, now that you have these gradients and soft tones. Not sure what exactly, but the current version seems a little harsh relative to the overall swiss chill factor.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 4 November 2012 01:51 (thirteen years ago)

Swiss is probably the most tempting non-old.css stylesheet I've seen, but I'm gonna keep it old-school.

emil.y, Sunday, 4 November 2012 03:29 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, I might eventually go back to old.css too. Trying to give this one a good shake though.

Am I right that italicized text is bigger?

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 4 November 2012 04:53 (thirteen years ago)

Yes indeed, italicised text is bigger. I read that in a typography book somewhere that it's better to have italicised text 1pt larger than the surrounding text.

Keith, Sunday, 4 November 2012 10:53 (thirteen years ago)

Huh! Not sure how I feel about that - - - it kinda changes the way a post reads or is emphasized, for me at least. But interesting.

Great chocolate

Tome Cruise (Matt P), Sunday, 4 November 2012 16:24 (thirteen years ago)

Thankyou!

Doctor, yes I thought it was odd when I read it, but I decided to try it and I have got to like it. It's certainly a bit odd, I mean, you'd think that type designers would just make their italicised versions a bit bigger but then there you are. The point the book made was that italics tend to look smaller at the same point size, so you get the same odd feeling of it not flowing so well. All very strange.

Keith, Sunday, 4 November 2012 16:37 (thirteen years ago)

i'm gonna keep this one for a while, i dig it

call all destroyer, Sunday, 4 November 2012 16:45 (thirteen years ago)

still curious about the clicked/unclicked links issue

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Sunday, 4 November 2012 16:57 (thirteen years ago)

Yes, I'm looking at that. It's quite tricky in that I'm trying to get an answer that lets you be able to tell, but doesn't make the screen look messy - it can be a bit of information overload when half the things on the page are one colour and half the other. It's not easy getting something that's close enough to look okay but different enough such that you can tell.

I'll stick something in, in a minute, but I may not leave it that way - not sure it works particularly well.

Keith, Sunday, 4 November 2012 17:06 (thirteen years ago)

Okay, I think I may have the answer. Only applies to threads on the new answers page, which makes things a bit tidier and makes them the same colour as the headings.

Keith, Sunday, 4 November 2012 17:17 (thirteen years ago)

Looks great, thanks!

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Sunday, 4 November 2012 18:40 (thirteen years ago)

I added in a page to show you who's doing what. You can get it from the bottom of the front page (Theme Statistics):

Keith, Sunday, 4 November 2012 22:16 (thirteen years ago)

hey keith, question about the new style--

when you try to post something but other ppl have posted in the thread while you were typing, the page that shows their messages seems to be displaying their message text in the blue color, which implies that their messages are links. am i wrong about this? was it intentional? thanks!

call all destroyer, Monday, 5 November 2012 00:05 (thirteen years ago)

kenan_style.css	23

22 other people and I know what's what.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 5 November 2012 00:09 (thirteen years ago)

There'll probably be a few balls ups in there in esoteric places that I didn't notice, because I did this one completely from scratch; it wasn't a modification of what existed already, so I'll sort them out as they pop up - I do want to get this one perfect though (whatever that means).

Keith, Monday, 5 November 2012 00:11 (thirteen years ago)

hey Keith,

just a small thing, but when other messages are posted before you can get your own in, i noticed that it makes the posts blue (and underlines them when you put the cursor over the words). see this screenshot.

http://i48.tinypic.com/dmabcw.png

not a big deal at all but thought it might be easy to correct.

Z S, Sunday, 11 November 2012 20:10 (thirteen years ago)

Hey Z S - thanks, though much as it's not tricky to correct, it's not the stylesheet, in that it happens with other ones too. I think I must've ballsed up a tag years ago when I wrote the thing and left an anchor tag open. Easy enough to fix in theory, but I have a bunch of other changes on my development version and it's not really a great point to upgrade stuff right now. I will be doing this at some point and will sort it out.

OK update I have fixed it in the development version, but it won't be live in ILX until I upgrade it... Dunno when that'll be but some time soon.

Cheers.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Sunday, 11 November 2012 23:24 (thirteen years ago)

Wow, I've never used monochrome no borders before. I love the way flag post and permalink are staying out of trouble on the right of the page so you can bookmark a post at a glance. If swiss had this behaviour I'd marry it. (It does look great though Keith!)

sktsh, Sunday, 11 November 2012 23:31 (thirteen years ago)

Whoa I'd forgotten I'd done that, though I don't think I could do it with Swiss as it'd f**k with the aesthetic, in that 'right' is only part the way across the page. Cheers anyway!

Keith, Sunday, 11 November 2012 23:35 (thirteen years ago)

woah, monochrome is pretty hardcore, never tried this before either.

agreed hardcore about the way it handles flag post permalink - - every other sheet i used i end up constantly hitting FP by accident when i'm trying to bookmark. Hmmm.

Keith, Tuesday, 13 November 2012 01:00 (thirteen years ago)

Growing to really love the look of swiss.css, though I'm still on the fence about the italics being +1pt (it looks more than that). Looks better on windows than on OSX imo, which is slightly annoying 'cause the latter's my home setup. One question: why are the individual posts only taking up the left half of the screen while the title and "add a post" parts take the entire width?

willem, Wednesday, 14 November 2012 20:00 (thirteen years ago)

Thanks - I dunno really about the widths; I thought it was beautiful (Jimi Hendrix voice).

The posts are less width to aid readability, kind of similar to two columns. People find it easier to scan left to right if they don't have to go too far. This isn't an issue for headlines or posting.

It amazes me it looks better on Windows, in that I've never personally seen it on Windows at all. In some ways I was a little nervous it was bloody awful as I, without looking at it, made Windows use Franklin Gothic, due the lack of a good Palatino substitute, in that at least I like Franklin Gothic. Thinking about it now, maybe Optima would've been an option, if Windows has that (probably not).

Keith, Wednesday, 14 November 2012 20:12 (thirteen years ago)

I have been thinking about this thing where I squash up one-liner posts that come close to each other in time... So when someone posts something substantial, the chit-chat comments are a bit easier to read in a bunch, e.g.

swiss.css has really won me over due to the shorter width of posts. It's so much easier to read for me, though that may partly due to my lazy right eye.

doctor, doctor, give me the news (askance johnson), Wednesday, 14 November 2012 20:31 (thirteen years ago)

i think this is a cool idea, but how would it in work in practice? all comments that are three lines or less and posted within 2 minutes of each other are clustered?

it might be imperfect no matter how you do it (unless you employ a full-time ILX intern to cluster relevant chit-chat posts!), but i still think it would be neat to try it out

Z S, Wednesday, 14 November 2012 22:56 (thirteen years ago)

My thoughts were just as yours. The only way to see would be to do it and see how it looks. Luckily I have 12 years of data to try it out on. Well maybe 9 years' worth anyway: the early years system didn't actually record the time of posts so they're all clocked at 1am when I did the migration six years ago or so.

Keith, Wednesday, 14 November 2012 23:00 (thirteen years ago)

Keith, Monday, 3 December 2012 22:15 (twelve years ago)

suddenly the messages on ILX are in serif font. but everything that's not the text of a message is in sans serif. what font did i accidentally delete/deactivate?

the late great, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 05:31 (twelve years ago)

only happens when using swiss.css btw

the late great, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 05:35 (twelve years ago)

when using blueski-2.css (my 2nd favorite) everything is in sans serif

the late great, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 05:38 (twelve years ago)

It's different between Mac and Windows - is this the issue? Basically because these platforms have different fonts installed. On Windows, it uses Franklin Gothic for body text, which is sans-serif and on the Mac it uses Palatino. Does that explain your issue or have you actually deleted one of the above?

Keith, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 18:39 (twelve years ago)

i thought swiss.css used a sans serif font for messages?

the late great, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 19:21 (twelve years ago)

ah ha, i reactivated franklin gothic (on my mac) and now everything is nice and SWISS looking

thankign you

the late great, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 19:22 (twelve years ago)

Well glad it works, but it's an odd outcome in that The Mac's typically got Palatino and not Franklin Gothic. Of course if you remove Palatino but have Franklin Gothic installed (could come with MS Office) then that's what you'd see

Franklin Gothic is of course a US font and not a Swiss one!

Keith, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 19:42 (twelve years ago)

i have both palatino and franklin gothic activated. if i turn off franklin gothic the body text of the messages turns into (palatino) serif font, which isn't how swiss is supposed to show up, is it?

the late great, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 19:46 (twelve years ago)

this is how great swiss.css is - thrown into total disequilibrium when it stops working!

the late great, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 19:47 (twelve years ago)

Ha - are you running Windows?

Keith, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 19:47 (twelve years ago)

Actually, dunno why I asked that...

This is how the fonts are defined, and the way it works is from left to right. If you've Palatino installed, it should use that. If you've not got that, then Franklin Gothic Book. If you've not got that, then Times New Roman and if you don't have that, then whatever the default serif font on your system is:

font-family: Palatino, "Franklin Gothic Book", "Times New Roman", Serif;

Class... Anyone... Bueller?

Keith, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 22:17 (twelve years ago)

Took a brief look at the new one, but I still prefer style3.

The Complete Afterbirth of the Cool (WilliamC), Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:14 (twelve years ago)

Whoa, had forgotten about that one. Did that one in about 30 seconds!

Keith, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:15 (twelve years ago)

Newold looks a little more crowded -- I think style3 puts more space between posts, and between threads on SNA. I could be imagining it, I dunno.

The Complete Afterbirth of the Cool (WilliamC), Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:19 (twelve years ago)

Oh no I think it is more crowded. That's kind of how it used to be. Actually, the original thing didn't have any space at all between things. I've put 1.3ems in there, because it's pretty horrible all bunched up, in my opinion, but still wanted to be in the basic spirit of the original ILX. Just a few things, like that, and a small margin that are different.

Keith, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:21 (twelve years ago)

i like a greater contrast between thread-links i've clicked on and those i haven't (in addition to the magic circles). still sticking with oldold, with which i have no real complaints

mookieproof, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:23 (twelve years ago)

The thing I find weird about old old is that the margins are strange. The posts have a margin but the heading doesn't. The menu doesn't, but the site message and anything else up there does.

Keith, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:24 (twelve years ago)

Lines of text in Newold run off the right side of my page/window. (Chrome 24, Mac 10.8.3) I don't want to have to scroll right to read ILX as well as scroll down; will have to change back to Style3.

The Complete Afterbirth of the Cool (WilliamC), Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:26 (twelve years ago)

Oh okay, I can fix that.

On reflection, I should have called it OLD NEUE.

Keith, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:26 (twelve years ago)

Is that better?

Keith, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:28 (twelve years ago)

For some reason ILX only looks right to me in a sans-serif font. As a result I'm sort of fixated on blueski-2.

Brad C., Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:32 (twelve years ago)

Looks good at the thread level and the right margins -- SNA still super crowded. xp

The Complete Afterbirth of the Cool (WilliamC), Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:33 (twelve years ago)

Yeah this one here is deliberately like the old ILX, where no font was specified at all, so it's showing in serif (I expect) because your browser's default font is a serif one (Times, in my case). If you change it to Helvetica or something, it'll show in that.

Some years ago, someone made exactly the opposite comment!

xp...

Keith, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:33 (twelve years ago)

William, yes it is, but then it is supposed to be like the old one.

Keith, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:34 (twelve years ago)

Although I see I've lost you!

Keith, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:35 (twelve years ago)

whoa so this is what ilx looked like, it seems familiar but really strange after years of css3

My Chemical Romance did 9/11 (jjjusten), Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:39 (twelve years ago)

something seems weird about the placement of the text in the add a post box, like it starts too far down and too far to the right or something

My Chemical Romance did 9/11 (jjjusten), Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:39 (twelve years ago)

I just really like style3 -- it's going to take something really exceptional to shake me loose from that one.

The Complete Afterbirth of the Cool (WilliamC), Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:41 (twelve years ago)

Hey John, yeah do you mean the padding inside the textbox itself? Maybe. I'll reduce it.

Keith, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:41 (twelve years ago)

Okay, that's reduced. Maybe a bit too much.

Keith, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:44 (twelve years ago)

it's going to take something really exceptional to shake me loose from that one.

Oh that's Swiss by the way. Spent a great deal longer than 30 seconds on that one.

Keith, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:46 (twelve years ago)

lemme see here. oh yeah, thats a lot better

My Chemical Romance did 9/11 (jjjusten), Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:49 (twelve years ago)

Also, this doesn't look exactly like old ILX (it couldn't really as there are more functions nowadays). I think what I was aiming at was roughly the same style - just text, but just removing the bits that were just functions of it being how browsers rendered HTML by default back then. Trying to be a bit more ordered without losing the basic "just a bunch of text" thing.

xp

Keith, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:50 (twelve years ago)

im sure i will stick with this just long enough to never remember what i used to use and then try css3 and be convinced that wasnt it, which is what happened to me the last time i did this

submit post and convert buttons seem comically large to me as well

My Chemical Romance did 9/11 (jjjusten), Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:51 (twelve years ago)

oh weird, when you xpost in this the previous post turns into a link or something wtf? am i just noticing this for the first time because its link colored (and adds underline when moused over) or is that a thing thats always been like that

My Chemical Romance did 9/11 (jjjusten), Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:52 (twelve years ago)

I do like Swiss, but I never did resolve my issues with Helvetica (a version of Helvetica that I have installed for work) not displaying properly in Chrome.

The Complete Afterbirth of the Cool (WilliamC), Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:53 (twelve years ago)

Yeah I'm going to change the buttons. They're just default browser buttons. Actually, I've already changed them, but they're still not very good, so will work on them more.

xp

Keith, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:53 (twelve years ago)

regretting not clicking on the xpost now, it might have taken me to some magical uberilx

My Chemical Romance did 9/11 (jjjusten), Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:55 (twelve years ago)

Yeah that xpost bug has been there for years. It's because I forgot to type a ">" in 2006 once.

Keith, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:56 (twelve years ago)

ha i think i never noticed it before because css3 has it in red or something right, which is not the color links are goddamnit

My Chemical Romance did 9/11 (jjjusten), Wednesday, 27 March 2013 23:58 (twelve years ago)

quoted text in a bigger font size is really disorienting to me

wait now it isnt wtf

My Chemical Romance did 9/11 (jjjusten), Thursday, 28 March 2013 00:00 (twelve years ago)

Italicised? Yeah that's because I made this one from swiss.css as the starting point. I read that in a typography book - if you have 12pt normal, italics look smaller, so you should have 13pt italics. I actually really like it.

Hello there Hello there Hello there.

I understand that, but some things just take time.

Keith, Thursday, 28 March 2013 00:03 (twelve years ago)

this post was the one that weirded me out, maybe something else happened there: what is going on in your musical life

My Chemical Romance did 9/11 (jjjusten), Thursday, 28 March 2013 00:03 (twelve years ago)

Yeah that is weird. It's not the bigger size, it's the letter spacing on the italics, I think. I'll have a look, but will be tomorrow now.

Keith, Thursday, 28 March 2013 00:05 (twelve years ago)

Took a gander, but I was disoriented by visited links being the same color as plaintext. :-|

Leeena Dunham (Leee), Thursday, 28 March 2013 01:29 (twelve years ago)

AAAARRGGH! What's happened? How do I change it back? I can't even remember what my stylesheet was, but it's changed and it looks HORRIBLE!

pssstttt, Hey you (dog latin), Thursday, 28 March 2013 12:59 (twelve years ago)

one month passes...

keef, quirk i have noticed - in the swiss stylesheets i cannot see the numbers at the end of each line in this post: POLLy Jean Harvey - The PJ Harvey results thread

can see them fine in e.g. blueski. am using google's "chrome" internet browser.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 2 May 2013 12:35 (twelve years ago)

actually, i like what you have done here, with blueski3

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 2 May 2013 12:35 (twelve years ago)

per discussion over on (still modless) ILP: is old.css still the stylesheet with the largest image display?

ְ֮֠֓֟֬֩ (gr8080), Thursday, 2 May 2013 12:48 (twelve years ago)

Not sure I follow, Roberto - can you post what does show on the others and what doesn't on Swiss? Will take a look and see if I can sort at some point.

Cheers.

Thanks. Weird though - works fine for me. Tried both Swiss and SwissHelvetica.

Keith, Friday, 3 May 2013 12:26 (twelve years ago)

Although on a Mac - you're on Windows I think (because of the Franklin Gothic). Not that it really ought to make any kind of difference, but can anyone else on Windows see the same thing?

Keith, Friday, 3 May 2013 12:27 (twelve years ago)

yep windows

Whoa - thanks for the comprehensive response. How weird though.

Keith, Friday, 3 May 2013 12:40 (twelve years ago)

Not sure there's anything I can do about it. It's just a paragraph... Not a stylesheet thing. Guessing there's some bug in Windows Chrome that's screwing up at first sign of a tab character.

Keith, Friday, 3 May 2013 12:41 (twelve years ago)

Hang on a sec and I can try it in Win 8...

crazy old chrome

to be clear, i personally am not fussed, i like swiss but i am enjoying it here on blueski3, so i am not requesting any remedial actions for my own sake, i was just bringing this to the attention on the proper authorities like a responsible citizen

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 3 May 2013 12:55 (twelve years ago)

No it's fine... Just don't know what to do about it, as it's very unclear why it's happening!

You can choose a font from the drop down at the bottom of the style list now, that’s just the first. There should be an option to use your browser font but I wonder if I’ve broken that. Will take a look.
