baseball. it's a universe that resides exclusively within itself and has zero application to the real world. sci-fi nerds observe modern trends and accentuate on them to provide commentary for whatever sci-fi theme they're going. computer nerds get jobs. pretty much all other types of nerds at least get out of the house somewhat. i'm kinda iffy on the benefits of being a rock nerd except that rock = universally cool, so i figure that justification enough.

Without reading the thread, I instinctively went for baseball nerd. It's not just all about statistics, it's about statistics PLUS obsession with the least physical athletes possible, outside of bowling. There's stats in every sport, but baseball has no hot guys and nothing sweaty and kick-ass to watch.

I like baseball, for the record. I'm just saying, if you're prone to being bored by nerdiness, baseball has got to trip some kind of breaker.

I am Woolen Man. The scarf and I are one. (kenan), Thursday, 27 January 2011 09:10 (fourteen years ago)

Slade Venom Secret Police (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 27 January 2011 09:10 (fourteen years ago)

You left out a lot of nerds. Comics nerd definitely should be there.

My least favorite lately is the Board Game Nerd. They shop at the same stores as the comics nerds. "Hey I just bought a new board game! Let's all spend three hours learning how to play it, and then give up because it's obviously never going to end! And then do it again with another game next week!" Fuck you, learn to use a deck of cards.

I am Woolen Man. The scarf and I are one. (kenan), Thursday, 27 January 2011 09:18 (fourteen years ago)

Tuomas, Thursday, 27 January 2011 09:36 (fourteen years ago)

I thought that 'rock nerd' in this context meant people that collect rocks, rather than 'rock music'. Also, 'chess nerd' is missing as an option. Again, I was one, actually so much of a chess nerd that the other chess nerds thought I was a nerd.

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Thursday, 27 January 2011 10:59 (fourteen years ago)

"Chess nerd" is too smart to be annoying.

See, this is why I want playing cards instead of goofy-ass board games with 500 map pieces and 200 player pieces and 1200 rules that are all based on the last 1500 games that came out last year that are almost but not quite exactly like it. We can make up card games, too, and they serve the same purposes of challenge and socialization, and a pack of cards costs about $0.59.

I am Woolen Man. The scarf and I are one. (kenan), Thursday, 27 January 2011 11:06 (fourteen years ago)

Font nerd. It's a fucking typeface dudes, who really cares?

Matt DC, Thursday, 27 January 2011 11:07 (fourteen years ago)

OMG I do. I care a lot. My mother bought me a subscription to National Geographic for Christmas, and the first couple of issues came in the mail last week. The feature font on the cover was Clarendon Bold. The table of contents was in ARIAL. FUCKING ARIAL. I threw it across the room, I really did. I was told to calm down.

I am Woolen Man. The scarf and I are one. (kenan), Thursday, 27 January 2011 11:10 (fourteen years ago)

Your mother OTM.

Matt DC, Thursday, 27 January 2011 11:11 (fourteen years ago)

My mother was not present for the throwing. That would be extremely rude.

I am Woolen Man. The scarf and I are one. (kenan), Thursday, 27 January 2011 11:12 (fourteen years ago)

I say this with all respect and in total honesty, but "It's a fucking typeface dudes, who really cares?" sounds no different to me than if you had said, "It's a fucking building dudes, who really cares?" These things surround us. They matter.

I am Woolen Man. The scarf and I are one. (kenan), Thursday, 27 January 2011 11:20 (fourteen years ago)

Oh come on, nerds are okay. Even baseball nerds - quirks of statistics are cool. Cos then you can argue what relevance the statistics are and it suddenly gets interesting.

My fave is the sci-fi nerd for all the reasons mentioned upthread.

Dull nerds are just dull people who happen to be nerds. They'd be dull even if they didn't know shit about anything.

― Rocker Brian (Abbbottt), Friday, 28 January 2011 00:10 (22 minutes ago)

There are two types of rock nerd though. 1) those that collect amethysts and suchlike, 2) those that pick up 'interesting' stones off the beach and then keep them in one of those cabinets with small plastic drawers.

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Friday, 28 January 2011 00:34 (fourteen years ago)

I would have voted cricket nerd if it'd been included. In fact "sports nerd" generally would be ideal. Stats, plays, blah bloohhh booorrinnng.

Citizen SNPs (Trayce), Friday, 28 January 2011 00:36 (fourteen years ago)

Actually as well as being a font nerd, computer nerd, sci-fi nerd, and chess nerd, I just remembered that I was also very nearly a rock nerd. By which I mean that I picked up some bits of quartz from a relative's driveway, wrote a short article about the uses of quartz, then thought 'this is boring', and stopped.
So in spite of voting font nerd, I suppose that rock nerd is the most boring of all, but it's so boring that most people give it up early. The ones who stick with it end up with nice looking rocks which are mostly interesting.

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Friday, 28 January 2011 00:38 (fourteen years ago)

Citizen SNPs (Trayce), Friday, 28 January 2011 00:39 (fourteen years ago)

I think I have to come at this from a traditionalist point of view. And honestly, unless it impedes your ability to have conversation about 'normal' things, are you REALLY a nerd?

Very much so! Knowing a lot about history, however specific or broad, really does directly translate into a better understanding of current politics and economics than most people have. And there's nothing dull about history. It's filled with horror and comedy and irony and violence and sex and scandal and triumph and inspiration. A history nerd is not a nerd. Maybe we're defining "nerd" differently. Someone who knows a lot about history is clearly very interested in social sciences, and the study of any one of them involves learning a LOT of history. I guess if you're just interested in the way people used to dress or smell, yeah, that's not very useful.
