way better than I could draw = this is crucial! i was really good at drawing when i was kid, but i tried scribbling some biro sketches of newspaper photos the other day and they were really really terrible
drawing as well as some of these pics itt requires _a lot_ of practice as well as some natural skill, so i find it kinda dispiriting that these ppl (and most of them are way into adulthood afaict) have found such crushingly banal subjects and aesthetic bankruptcy

My high school art teacher was a notably sexist, kinda creepy guy. He only liked representational art, and only of people! So all we did was portrait work, mostly from photos. I realized eventually he responded best (an A no matter how lazy the art) when I drew women with curvy asses. So eventually I just started drawing from '80s Calvin Klein jeans ads. Then I focused only on the butt, just these jean pocket asses truncated at the waist and thighs. A or A+ every time. That is how I spent my senior year drawing asses in charcoal and pencil. <3 Abbott

much respect to peyton but her Eminem is too on-the-nose, like something you'd put in Entertainment Weekly with a caption underneath like "Eminem has struggled to keep his demons in check"
the deviantart sketch is more haunting in its fanzine mugshottiness. it captures the"banality of thuggery" or some such nonsense much better.

actually I still like the way the drawing turns a goofy scene into something abstract and inexplicable. like, what are those tufts of hair on the side of her head, and what's that glowing orb, and why are her glasses levitating? it's mysterious but not too too willfully bizarre.

...although I won't deny the skill behind it. it's harder to scorn these things when you look at them as drawing exercises and look at a deviantart gallery as a notebook of someone's artistic progress. on the other hand, it's a little sad when some people don't progress beyond the level of mimicry, so that their drawing exercises really are the peak of their creativity. but it's cynical to assume that's the case for all or most people on the site.
that said, I don't mind giggling at portraits that are just plain awful, drawing exercises or not. I mean

yeah, when I tried the same technique (breaking a photo into a grid of squares and copying it square by square) my portrait (of me, not Audrey) was decent but nowhere near as realistic as that one.

bad Audrey Hepburn drawings are hilarious. it takes a certain amount of genius to transform one of the most conventionally pretty women ever into one of the most conventionally scary monsters ever.

realistic audrey portrait is done with projection (if it isn't a complete shop) in other words it's a big ol cheat. (i have a friend who paints from projected photos but at least they're his own photos.)
