Fantastic show. The recurring characters are hilarious, but my favourite eps are probably any where F&J meet random weirdos on their travels (e.g. Magic Man, Dungeon Cat).

According to the people behind the show, it actually takes place in a post-Apocalyptic Earth, with evidence occasionally turning up in the background.

Duane Barry, Sunday, 20 February 2011 23:34 (fourteen years ago)

season 2 is kinda weird cuz the kid who plays finn, his voice is changing, he def sounds less pre-adolescent

I am sorry for my insensitive tweet (Edward III), Monday, 21 March 2011 02:09 (fourteen years ago)

I enjoyed what I saw of this show, even the fact that my friend introducing it to me kept asking over and over, "Can you BELIEVE this show is for KIDS?"

Looking Man (Abbbottt), Monday, 21 March 2011 02:23 (fourteen years ago)

Basically how the night went was:
FRIEND: Hey, watch this show Adventure Time!
*watch 8 episodes, asks if I can believe it's for kids several times each episode*
FRIEND: You've seen enough – if you want more, download it yourself.

Looking Man (Abbbottt), Monday, 21 March 2011 02:25 (fourteen years ago)

He sounds delightful.

"Can you BELIEVE this show is for KIDS?"
this is the only kids show that I do believe is for kids.
every other kids show seems to be aimed at stoner college doofuses.
don't ruin this show too, stoner college doofuses, i beg of you!

Philip Nunez, Monday, 21 March 2011 02:30 (fourteen years ago)

I really should download some more. I promise the only drug I will enjoy while watching it is a knitting high!\

Threadkiller General (Viceroy), Monday, 21 March 2011 02:34 (fourteen years ago)

I mean 98% of it is fine but then they throw in this sexytime stuff that is kinda unnecessar imo

haha, why?? tbh sometimes I do feel a little uneasy about the messages it sends - like that you can solve problems by hitting people with swords

so does Batman! and like every other cartoon aimed at boys in the last 20 years... i mean, i kinda love the fact that they're actually allowed to use the word "kill" in the show, when that word was banned from kids TV for ages - not because I'm a homicidal maniac, but because of the weird crap they'd always do to get around saying it

not that this show is trying to make any kind of statement, it's just wonderful and funny

Nhex, Monday, 21 March 2011 03:47 (fourteen years ago)

My 4yo neice adores Adventure Time, and every time she visits she's quickly running up to my computer to watch more. The "dodgy" stuff just goes over her head, really, though she was a little upset by exploding Tree Trunks (and relieved to see her alive and well in a later ep).

Anyway, the next episode will have Marceline interact with Bubblegum for the first time (yay) but it's been put back for a week (booo).

Production blog: http://frederatorblogs.com/adventure_time/

Duane Barry, Monday, 21 March 2011 11:52 (fourteen years ago)

EdIII - what are some of the examples of stuff that you consider too sexy for kids? Off the top of my head, the only thing I can think of is when Tree Trunks comes back from the Crystal Dimension and is all lustful for Finn.

At any rate, our family has had a running "Adventure Time Night" on Mondays for the last six months. And then when they added the Thursday night rebroadcast, Thursday became Adventure Time night too.

We're also really big on Regular Show, which is consistently gutbustingly funny despite having the same basic plot every episode.

kkvgz, Monday, 21 March 2011 11:56 (fourteen years ago)

I dunno, it's weird that ppl think it's ok for a kids' show to throw the word "sexy" around so much. I don't mind the swordplay/fighting stuff cuz the show's pretty true to the ways kids playact that sort of thing, and I'm not bothered by jake teasing finn about how he wants to kiss princess bubblegum, that's pretty innocent stuff. but the tree trunks eps really pushes things - when an elephant puts on makeup and says "I'm tempting this guy with my body" it's funny and absurd but we're not in kids land anymore.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBdf68eRfUk

I am sorry for my insensitive tweet (Edward III), Monday, 21 March 2011 14:16 (fourteen years ago)

Lol that we both zeroed in on Tree Trunks. What can ya say - she's hot stuff. I hadn't noticed them throwing the word "sexy" around, but that may explain why my kid asked me what that word meant recently. I'll have to be a little more on the ball, I guess. Regardless, I don't think that the show teaches kids any particularly bad lessons, and my wife and I are very active in our parenting and will talk to our kid about why we don't let him watch media that we find objectionable (Flapjack, Fanboy and Chum-Chum, overly violent movies and games).

kkvgz, Monday, 21 March 2011 14:20 (fourteen years ago)

I'm glad this show has the confidence to not be overly safe and dumbed down. I think it exposes kids to a wild, creative sense of humor that they benefit from appreciating at a younger age, much like Spongebob. The tempting with body line was a bit blatant I admit, but overall I believe this show does great things for children's imagination.

Wacky Way Lounge (Evan), Monday, 21 March 2011 16:45 (fourteen years ago)

when an elephant puts on makeup and says "I'm tempting this guy with my body" it's funny and absurd but we're not in kids land anymore.

Seems roughly on par with Miss Piggy and Kermit to me.

and it is nothing like the muppet show for so many reasons I can't even form words

I actually sorta love this show for it's sole consistency being the characters (rly seems like they're never in the same "setting" twice) but man do I wish they'd hire new writers. It's just entirely devoid of humor.

It cracks me up all the time!

reggaeton for the painfully alone (polyphonic), Monday, 21 March 2011 18:55 (fourteen years ago)

iono. I tried to factor in the fact that I'm, er, not it's target audience but even then I can still watch a (new!) episode of Spongebob and find myself rolling. The humor here is v awkward and entirely dependent on bizarre situations to carry it thru. I'm curious to see if test audiences (kids) laugh as much as expected.

poll: who is your favorite rice krispie? (kelpolaris), Monday, 21 March 2011 19:02 (fourteen years ago)

I have to basically perform cpr on my kid every time we watch the show. granted, he doesn't get all the jokes, but the weirdness definitely appeals to him.

i have a hot bagel waiting for me in my bed so ill say this: (kkvgz), Monday, 21 March 2011 19:04 (fourteen years ago)

if you're willing to ~risk everythin~ a lot of these things are available via torrents and just by typing in "adventure time mediafire/rapidshare/etc/etc" into google. There's probably some law out there that says otherwise, but I really see no harm in watching something on your computer that was provided to you "for free" via your cable subscription anyway.

juicebox, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 14:35 (fourteen years ago)

here are my faves... still catching up w/ some of season 2

"Adventure Time" - the pilot, it's in the first post of the thread, and it's one of the funniest segments

season 1

"Slumber Party Panic" - zombies attack candy kingdom, finn tries to distract everyone from noticing

"The Jiggler" - finn and jake adopt a cute little thing that starts dying

"Ricardio the Heart Guy" - princess bubblegum has a new boyfriend, a sinister dude who looks like a heart

"My Two Favorite People" - jake and his gf, the korean-speaking lady rainicorn, start spending more time with finn, language barriers are overcome, quickly followed by jealousy

"Wizard" - finn and jake pass a series of tests to obtain wizard powers from a weird frog

"Evicted!" - marceline the vampire queen kicks finn and jake out of their treehouse

"What Is Life?" - to prank jake, finn builds N.E.P.T.R. (never-ending pie-throwing robot) but soon learns that playing god isn't all it's cracked up to be

"Henchman" - finn agrees to be marceline's henchman... FOR LIFE

"Dungeon" - finn enters a dungeon to prove he doesn't need jake, a xylophone-playing angel of death changes his mind

"The Duke" - finn ruins princess bubblegum's hair but blames it on the duke of nuts

season 2

"It Came from the Nightosphere" - finn releases marceline's father from the nightosphere... he is not a nice man

"Power Animal" - finn gets kidnapped by gnomes and jake can't focus long enough to save him

"To Cut a Woman's Hair" - a balding tree witch sits on jake and won't let him up until finn brings her princess hair, unfortunately when you want a lock of a girl's hair she thinks you like her ew

"Her Parents" - jake is about to meet lady rainicorn's parents when he finds out rainicorns hate dogs due to the brutal rainicorn-dog wars of yore

"The Pods" - finn takes on a quest to guard 3 magic beans but must figure out which one is evil

"The Silent King" - after proving they are unfit to govern themselves, finn becomes the king of goblins but can't stand all the royal rules

"Death in Bloom" - finn and jake kill princess bubblegum's houseplant so they travel to the underworld to request its soul back from death

I am sorry for my insensitive tweet (Edward III), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 14:57 (fourteen years ago)

xposts - Thanks TT. Will watch Nightosphere and some others tonight. I really like what I've seen so far.

contenderizer, Monday, 16 May 2011 20:42 (fourteen years ago)

This was a good season, "Death in Bloom" probably being the single best episode. I think it was slightly more inconsistant than S1 though.

Duane Barry, Monday, 16 May 2011 20:56 (fourteen years ago)

Inconsistent? Which episodes were bad, though?

Jouster, Tuesday, 17 May 2011 00:42 (fourteen years ago)

Happily, the third season starts next month!

phantompenguin, Tuesday, 17 May 2011 00:55 (fourteen years ago)

not sure if it was inconsistent as much as there were really high highs which made the ok episodes look kinda dull by comparison

the first rule of debate club (Edward III), Tuesday, 17 May 2011 03:40 (fourteen years ago)

Some episodes were a little slow, comparatively. The best episodes are the ones that have so many super creative surprises that constantly keep you on your toes like new characters, background situations, wackily stylized expressions, mind-blowing comments/word use, and bagels magically getting torsos/legs/underwear- all very suddenly. Though some that were a little more disappointing initially turned out to be incredible when watched again.

Jouster, the second season just had a higher number of episodes that didn't work (at least for me, personally) than the first - e.g. "Crystals have Power", "The Other Tarts", "Mystery Train". I'm not suggesting the show is going downhill or anything (not even close!) as there were a lot of fantastic episodes too. Looking forward to S3.

I know there's a new season and I'm really excited about seeing it but I only just started watching from s1 this last week so I'm not quite there yet -- should I just watch new episodes as they air? does it in anyway matter if I watch them out of order?

Mordy, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 00:06 (fourteen years ago)

nah it's not narrative in any way, there are bits you'll get if you've seen earlier eps (eg marceline's dad eating fries means more if you've seen it came from
the nightosphere) but it's so random anyway you can just roll with it

^ yeah, this whole episode was great. want to go through each episode by writer/storyboarder to see who's in charge of my favorites. tone and approach vary pretty substantially, and there are a lot of different artist involved. loved tom herpich's work in S2 ("memory of a memory" for instance), but i only noticed his name cuz i was already a fan.

I was mixing an episode last night, mixing the sounds and effects and the picture all together at the post-house and there was a really long fart sound that I needed to have in there for the story to work, for the jokes to work. And I remember making a call and having a really serious conversation with the network about making sure that this fart can stay in there, and we went back and forth about how juicy it could be. I didn’t want it juicy, So he was like, “Oh, it can be really dry and that’s fine. As long as it’s not over the top. Diarrhetic.” [Laughs.] I was like, ‘Okay, I can work with that.’ Then I ended up doing the sound into the microphone. [Makes long, dry fart sound.] I have a lot of those kinds of conversations.

“Bee and Puppycat” follows Bee, ever the reluctant hero, who becomes entangled in the adventures of a puppy (…or is he a cat?) as they travel between reality and the void of Fishbowl Space.

Created by Natasha Allegri, character designer and storyboard artist for Adventure Time. We can neither confirm nor deny the autobiographical nature of Bee & Puppycat.

I just saw the "I Remember You" episode. Wow, really sad. Reminded me of a West Wing episode where Allison Janney has to go home and confront her father dying of Alzheimers, but you know, an Adventure Time version. Also they're developing a backstory for this universe now? Goddamn.

Nhex, Monday, 18 February 2013 07:24 (twelve years ago)

They had a basic backstory laid out on whiteboards or something in the writer's room, but they're always adding to it. That episode floored me too.

flamboyant goon tie included, Tuesday, 19 February 2013 21:46 (twelve years ago)

I don't watch a lot of kid-oriented shows but something I love about this is the lack of empathy on the part of the young characters toward the Ice King, they call him old and wrinkled with such regularity and have so little tolerance for his paranoia and mental anguish. That "I remember you" ep in particular was such genius, reminded me of the childhood eye-roll feeling I had toward my own parents and their "problems". Ice King's workout bench + talk of his "pecs" is exactly like That One Uncle.

BMO lost, which i didn't love seems typical for herpich episode (my axe, i'll grind it). weird, dealing with isolation, alienation, conflicts that can't really be resolved, cruelty and death, often leaving a lingering sense of something unresolved. examples:

"the new frontier" - the one about jake's "croak dream". did the little banana guy drown or what?
"another way" - finn solo to escape freaky nurses. the unthinking infliction of harm, eventually redressed but still disturbing.
"thank you" - the snow goblin and little fire wolf. so lonely, and does the snow guy die at the end or what?
"princess cookie" - rebel cookie episode. disturbed outsider pushed to violence, and baby snaps' suicide comes as quite a shock (even if it isn't quite what it seems).

lots of other examples, like "puhoy" from last week. a whole life lived, then forgotten, becoming a meaningless punchline. one of th's big themes seems to be the harm we do to each other without knowing or really even caring.

I have many lovely lacy nightgowns (contenderizer), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 13:34 (twelve years ago)

At the end, when Bubble is all like, "now we can be together forever and you'll never be alone and it will never be quiet, etc." Is that a callback to something from a previous episode? It feels very familiar, although it felt more sinister this time.

Forgive me, but:

I watched the whole run of Bravest Warriors last night. While I enjoyed the series quite a bit and am looking forward to season two, it can't hold a candle to Adventure Time. It's "edgier" in the manner of Adult Swim & Cartoon Hangover fare, which is fine, but unfortunately, it's also a good deal more generic. They producers don't have the budget for the wonderful character and environment designs that make Adventure Time so endlessly enjoyable, and the cut-to-the-chase storytelling leaves little room for character development. At least so far...

Anyway, it made me think about the similar romantic dynamics presented in the following animated programs: Adventure Time, The Regular Show, Gravity Falls, Bravest Warriors and Gumball the Cat (yeah, i like cartoons). These shows, most of which run on Cartoon Network, all revolve around male protagonists, though often in ensembles that includes strong & central female characters. To the extent that they deal with romantic interest, they all concern long-running unrequited love for a close female friend. Since we're generally encouraged to emotionally identify with our male hero, the beloved remains at an distance, a "perfect" being seen from afar.

In the case of Adventure Time and Gravity Falls, the idealized love-object is a cool and capable older girl (i know, Finn's moved on from Peebles in recent episodes, but I'm talking about the initial set-up). She is adored, but his romantic affection is not returned. In the other shows, the central relationships seem poised at the brink, with both parties "secretly" longing for one another, each waiting for the other to make a decisive move.

These relationship dynamics are familiar from countless coming-of-age stories, indie films and sitcoms. The fact that they're based in the unconsummated, in the suspense of longing, makes them an ideal dramatic engine. Nevertheless, it seems weird to me that we're always in the guy's head, longing for her, and never in her head, longing for whomever. Gravity Falls halfheartedly attempts to split its focus between male and female co-protagonists, but Mabel is treated mostly as comic relief. Her romantic interests are occasionally depicted, but only as weirdly humorous distractions, and they never last longer than a single 11-minute episode. We're not encouraged to get inside her head and feel the angst of long-term longing for THE ONE, as we are with her brother Dipper. She's not taken seriously. Nevertheless, Gravity Falls deserves commendation for at least trying to create an interesting, distinctive and self-directed female semi-protagonist (elevated sidekick, w/e) with a heart of her own.

My point isn't that these shows are sexist (though they arguably are), but rather that they're one-sided. There's nothing wrong with cartoon romances featuring male protagonists, but I wonder why it should be so hard to find a gender-switched equivalent on TV or the web: an inventive, smart and well-designed animated fantasy show that views the world through the eyes of a female character whose romantic feelings are taken seriously. A coming-of-age story about her, not him. If I had a daughter, I'd want something like that to be available. In a way, I suppose I'm just finding a new way to ask why there isn't a female-centered Superbad or Rushmore. Juno is about as close as we get, and it's a very different thing.

To be fair, Ruby Vroom comes very close what i'm looking for in the hints of something more than just friendly affection between Ruby and Skull Boy. It's her story for the most part, and her feelings are taken quite seriously. The romantic angle is depicted less directly than in the shows I mentioned earlier, but it's nonetheless clearly present. Meanwhile, the rebooted version of My Little Pony does an admirable job presenting strong central female characters who approach the world on their own terms, but it wholly avoids any suggestion of romantic interest on the part of its central characters to concentrate more closely on their friendship (thank god). And that's about it. Maybe I'm just watching the wrong cartoons, I dunno...

Futurama has the same romantic structure.

the so-called socialista (dowd), Tuesday, 30 April 2013 02:20 (twelve years ago)

yup. i wonder if it has to do with the appeal of cartoons to loners and nerds. which leads to the unpleasant thought that it's a reflection of "nice guy" syndrome...

fwiw, adventure time has done a nice job of moving away from this structure in recent episodes. finn's now got an interesting, age-appropriate girlfriend who returns his affection. it's a cool and unusual move. how many stories spend that much time building up an impossible romance, only to ditch it midstream in favor of something more sensible?

controversial vegan pregnancy (contenderizer), Tuesday, 30 April 2013 02:40 (twelve years ago)

speaking of the "nice guy" thing, it's telling that adventure time has taken clear and specific shots at PUA/MRA ideology. and that they did this as they were weaning finn off his impossible princess fixation and directing him toward a (semi) healthy relationship. hard not to connect the two.

controversial vegan pregnancy (contenderizer), Tuesday, 30 April 2013 19:08 (twelve years ago)

yeah, i'd say if anything adventure time explicitly satirizes the kind of aggressive male longing you're referring to through the ice king character -- finn's crush on peebs is cute if nothing else (and certainly not aggressive - and like you mentioned, minimized in later episodes).

Mordy, Tuesday, 30 April 2013 19:10 (twelve years ago)

tru

open question: have any other popular tv shows explicitly ragged on PUA stuff? it seems like the sort of thing the office or community would hit, but i haven't watched either in forever. the fact that a "children's show" went there is kind of mind-boggling (and heartening).

"Dungeon comics -- that's a big inspiration for me and the crew who write on the show. Dungeon's a great comic, and I look to it for the sort of casual conversation they have with the big fantasy world that they all live in."
-Adventure Time’s Pendleton Ward in an interview on USA Today’s Pop Candy

PSY talks The Nut Job (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 20 February 2014 18:38 (eleven years ago)

you were waiting for that one

Nhex, Thursday, 20 February 2014 18:45 (eleven years ago)

i was tbh; it's a relief to know it's homage and not rip off

PSY talks The Nut Job (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 20 February 2014 18:47 (eleven years ago)

forks, u know i love dungeon, and i am not surprised to learn that ward was influenced by it (and i was always stan for sfar b4 i stan for anyone) but i don't see - even w/out that quote - that adventure time is a rip off. such totally different tones + voices. dungeon is elegiac + eternal. adventure time is immediate + juvenile. they're such different works, idk, maybe you could explain more what from dungeon you're seeing in the show bc i just don't see it

Mordy , Thursday, 20 February 2014 23:54 (eleven years ago)

loads of reasons? BOTH are often immediate and juvenile. killing of minor characters as light plot contrivances. constant accretion of lore and storyline rather than reliance on exposition. similar visual style with overdose of gothic chicken fat. duet of major characters who take on violent tasks for a dungeonmaster/princess. childish obsessions with sex and love. regularly shifting assumptions of gender and power. constant divergences into different timelines. it all seems pretty much there to me and while "rip off" is probably going a bit far (i'm really very pleased that both stories are about subtlety and surrealism in support of meaningful character development and powerful conclusions), adventure times heavy borrowing of a lot of dungeon's visual styles and core motifs would bug the hell out of me if ward didn't at least tip the hat to an influence that is so completely unknown outside of the EU.

Mordy , Friday, 21 February 2014 16:43 (eleven years ago)

AT*

Mordy , Friday, 21 February 2014 16:43 (eleven years ago)

dungeon is meant for an older audience but i could totally see the characters in a crossover.
anyways, i find both improve with heavy usage; watching thirty episodes of adventure time on a binge really got me completely in AT's corner. I bought a lot of quarter toys.

PSY talks The Nut Job (forksclovetofu), Friday, 21 February 2014 16:44 (eleven years ago)

i do see the influences, but not to the extent you're arguing. i've only read a couple of Dungeon books, but i don't feel like they're going for the same vibe or kinds of stories; Dungeon feels much darker and - for lack of a better description, distinctly in a French/European mold? Maybe Adventure Time feels a more "modernized" to me with all the discrete video game language and other vernacular. Dungeon is more (obviously) classic D&D and animal comix, like a totally different generation.

Nhex, Friday, 21 February 2014 16:49 (eleven years ago)

the "two buddies" adventuring-motif is too generic to really stick

Nhex, Friday, 21 February 2014 16:50 (eleven years ago)

the window dressing is often different, sure; i think the heart is very very similar.
for what it's worth, I own all the dungeon books translated to english and have watched probably a hundred eps of adventure time so i have strong opinions on this

PSY talks The Nut Job (forksclovetofu), Friday, 21 February 2014 16:54 (eleven years ago)

That recent "Red Throne" episode was really weak imo but at this point I'd have to rewatch to remember why I thought so.

Evan, Friday, 14 March 2014 00:00 (eleven years ago)

The one that was mostly Flame Princess and Cinnamon Bun retaking the Flame Kingdom? It was ok, but I feel like we've done these "Finn learns he's not hot shit after all" kind of episodes already, like "Too Young" not that long ago and basically the entire FP dumping arc.

Phlannel Boxingday is a great name. What a weird episode; Lemonhope is almost as much of a jerk as the other Lemongrabs, but I liked his dream guilt struggle. Definitely won me over with that 1,000-years-into-the-future coda.

Nhex, Friday, 14 March 2014 03:52 (eleven years ago)

next ep is the season finale

Mordy , Friday, 14 March 2014 03:53 (eleven years ago)

There's so many of those Adventure Time comics out there! I really mean to get into them, since so many webcomic people I like have been involved - Meredith Gran (Octopus Pie), Josh Lesnick (Girly), Danielle Corsetto (Girls with Slingshots), and Ryan North as you mentioned
Also KC Green (Gunshow) is apparently doing a Regular Show book, which sounds like a perfect match

Nhex, Friday, 14 March 2014 03:57 (eleven years ago)

Going to an Adventure Time themed fancy dress party next weekend. Who the hell am I going to go as?

I've only seen about five episodes.

Yeah but I felt like it was written badly too... I'd really have to revisit. I get bummed when I come across an episode I don't love.

Evan, Friday, 14 March 2014 14:03 (eleven years ago)

I'd say about one out of four strike me as not so good; that's what put me off the show initially when i hit two bummers early

We hugged with no names exchanged (forksclovetofu), Friday, 14 March 2014 14:22 (eleven years ago)

Understandable - I can imagine not liking the show if you started off with an episode like the two-part Christmas special with Ice King's VHS tapes

Nhex, Friday, 14 March 2014 15:05 (eleven years ago)

yeah, the self-referential stuff especially requires a solid grounding in the show's lore

We hugged with no names exchanged (forksclovetofu), Friday, 14 March 2014 15:28 (eleven years ago)

I usually get worried whenever it looks like Marceline will be a focus because her episodes get very sappy.

Evan, Friday, 14 March 2014 15:46 (eleven years ago)

man, the last two eps were rough.

clouds, Saturday, 15 March 2014 11:13 (eleven years ago)

Evan, Saturday, 15 March 2014 11:58 (eleven years ago)

just... kind of heartbreaking.

maybe i'm too sensitive.

Oh OK, I haven't seen them yet so I was asking because I wasn't sure if they were just bad or heavy or what.

Evan, Sunday, 16 March 2014 03:46 (eleven years ago)

they were pretty heartbreaking. I found it to be really interesting , but I'm not sure I really liked it

Nhex, Sunday, 16 March 2014 05:55 (eleven years ago)

in honor of the season finale today i made a list of my five fave episodes from each season (except the 5th which was double long so i made it 10). i think these are all great episodes that demonstrate various things i love about the show - the surrealism, the dense mythology, the existentialism (Puhoy!). notable ones i didn't include are the lemongrab episodes which i love too much as an arc to leave off (so i listed them in their own category) and like the flame princess stuff which on reflection often seems like less than its parts. i didn't even bother compiling those.

anyway, if someone wants to start watching adventure time but doesn't know where to start, or doesn't get the fuss, here are my picks:

first season

The Enchiridion!
Business Time
Memories of Boom Boom Mountain
City of Thieves
Dungeon

second season

It Came from the Nightosphere
Blood Under the Skin
Her Parents
The Silent King
Belly of the Beast

third season

Wizard Battle
Fionna and Cake
What Was Missing
Beautopia
Thank You

fourth season

Daddy’s Little Monster
Card Wars
Sons of Mars
BMO Noire
The Lich

fifth season

Jake the Dog
Mystery Dungeon
Bad Little Boy
The Great Bird Man
Puhoy
Shh!
Be More
Sky Witch
Root Beer Guy
The Vault

lemonsaga

Too Young
You Made Me
All Your Fault
Another Five More Short Graybles
Too Old
Lemonhope Part 1
Lemonhope Part 2

Mordy , Monday, 17 March 2014 18:10 (eleven years ago)

oh yeah, i also didn't include any of the simon + marcy eps (thought about making a category called simonsaga) partially bc i think some of the best parts of that storyline are incidental in other episodes and tho i know the simon + marcy + remember me episodes are much beloved they're often pretty sappy and better for mythological completionism than like great stand-alone eps.

Mordy , Monday, 17 March 2014 18:11 (eleven years ago)

The show really has gone to new heights the last season or two, hasn't it?

I guess you can skip Evicted en route to Nightosphere, but I'll always love that episode for introducing Marceline

Nhex, Monday, 17 March 2014 18:14 (eleven years ago)

yeah! it's hard to cut it down to just 5 for each season. the easiest (or weakest season) imo was the second. they really hit their stride in the third and by the time you get to 4th + 5th season it's just stone cold classic after classic. bummer we're going to be waiting until AT LEAST july if not later for new eps since i think they start production early july :(

Mordy , Monday, 17 March 2014 18:18 (eleven years ago)

I preferred the innocence of the first and second seasons tbh. My favourite eps are the five Lich episodes. I hate any and all songs in this show.

I haven't been watching very much in the last 6 months. We used to have Adventure Time/Regular Show night as a big family to-do, but I guess my son has sort of drifted out of it for the time being. I kinda soured on it at some point last year when it seemed like a lot of the episodes seemed to focus on Finn being kinda a jerk. I'm a little bit hazy on exact episodes at this point.

how's life, Monday, 17 March 2014 22:03 (eleven years ago)

regular show suffers from having characters that are difficult to draw or make into action figures

What does "season" even mean to these fools?

how's life, Wednesday, 19 March 2014 12:07 (eleven years ago)

I was thinking, "wow, Cartoon Network finally dropped the arbitrary 100 episode number for cancellation", but then I realized that since these episodes are half-length, it'll really have to be 200 "episodes" before they can it. By regular TV standards (30 min. sitcoms and cartoons) they're cranking out less than 2 episodes a month, since there's usually one skip week every month or two.

Yeah, this "season" has been running since 2012, so I'm not sure why it's being marked that way

Nhex, Wednesday, 19 March 2014 14:40 (eleven years ago)

have we talked about how the grass sword is basically a super thinly veiled metaphor for puberty?

We hugged with no names exchanged (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 19 March 2014 14:45 (eleven years ago)

nope, but much like the dream firecrotch, I guess there wasn't much else to say about it

Nhex, Wednesday, 19 March 2014 15:22 (eleven years ago)

yeah, except it amazes me how much they get away with.
my girl regularly watches the show with me and walks away in amazement
"it's SUPPOSED to be for kids but it's really NOT for kids"

We hugged with no names exchanged (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 19 March 2014 15:25 (eleven years ago)

I'm mostly frustrated with Finn's "maturing" because every year that passes, the show gets more adult, and it's another year that I feel I can't watch this show with my young nieces

continually topping myself (flamboyant goon tie included), Wednesday, 19 March 2014 15:26 (eleven years ago)

i hear you but i wish there had been an easily accessible pop culture "so you got a boner, it's totally okay and not a sign that your body is going to turn on you" moment when i was eleven.

We hugged with no names exchanged (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 19 March 2014 15:27 (eleven years ago)

totally agreed

i think the mature stuff is still fairly shielded; i mean, they were using the word "sexy" since the first season... most of the sexual metaphors will go still over kids heads, but more importantly they'll still be able to grasp the concepts if they're ready. maybe I'm optimistic.

Nhex, Wednesday, 19 March 2014 15:35 (eleven years ago)

At 11 a boner is most definitely a sign that your body is going to turn on you iirc.

I bought the first season a while ago; it has some really great ideas and there was a few things that made me laugh quite a lot but in general I thought it wasn't quite funny enough, I didn't like much of the music and the constant tone of Finn's voice was really grating.

I've heard later seasons are much better so I might get a friend to show me his favourite episodes.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 12:41 (eleven years ago)

In my opinion 1st season is pretty peak. I'm personally less of a fan of the sappy arcs of the later seasons and much prefer the silly one-off adventures and super creative environment/characters they meet during each one. Naturally these types of episodes are packed with more humor, too.

Evan, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 13:38 (eleven years ago)

And those still exist later on of course too but not to the same frequency.

Evan, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 13:39 (eleven years ago)

i'm entirely the opposite.

Kinda surprised how completely Nussbaum missed the climax of Bad Timing: the chronologically disengaged boyfriend appears in the "tiny chorus" before the fade to black, suggesting those figures are part of an unknowable outer circle that can see and follow our world.

I still prefer episodes that don't necessary have any major character development. When they don't focus on sappy feels they instead include more jokes while still being anything but uninspired. Perfect episodes include "Storytelling" and "Power Animal"

Evan, Sunday, 25 May 2014 13:26 (eleven years ago)

i dunno, my ideal adventure time ep is still "memory of a memory" from s3. good jokes, genuine feels, lots of character development.

Nhex, Saturday, 7 June 2014 05:02 (eleven years ago)

yeah, weird ep :/

good tho! show's been on a serious roll for quite a while now. personally, i choose to believe that LSP restricted herself to some heavy tongue wrasslin (or whatever they do over there in lumpy space). point being that finn's version of "making out" was awfully chaste to begin with. but yeah, the wood-sprouting, deflowering, etc. eesh. anyway, loved breezy, glad she got to have her loved one in the end.

sci-fi looking, chubby-leafed, delicately bizarre (contenderizer), Saturday, 7 June 2014 16:44 (eleven years ago)

on reflection, i suppose breezy supports the sexual subtext, too. she chased finn around and even seemed to think herself in love w/ him, but really only wanted his flower. which, you know, bees...

sci-fi looking, chubby-leafed, delicately bizarre (contenderizer), Saturday, 7 June 2014 16:50 (eleven years ago)

Nhex, Sunday, 13 July 2014 15:50 (eleven years ago)

Jake & Finn are barely in any episodes together anymore and sometimes neither make an appearance... What's the deal?

Season 1 (gold sword era Finn) still the top spot for me.

Evan, Sunday, 13 July 2014 22:26 (eleven years ago)

We've just about caught up to the current episode, 4 or 5 to go. What a ride.

it's not rocker science (WilliamC), Sunday, 13 July 2014 22:43 (eleven years ago)

evan, i think you've mentioned that you like season one best like 3 or 4 times already?

clouds, Tuesday, 15 July 2014 00:42 (eleven years ago)

Haha oops. I guess I always feel like I need to include that early seasons aren't guilty of the particular attribute of newer seasons I happen to be complaining about.

Also I'm pretty bored so I guess I keep trying to inspire a debate and haven't yet been fully satisfied by the response so far.

Evan, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 14:39 (eleven years ago)

well, for one i don't think the show would have lasted as long as it has if it had adhered too slavishly to the original premise (and the pilot isn't even that funny)

for me, the development that has occurred in the show (the characters, fleshing out of the AT universe and an attempt at a "canon") is what sets it apart from the landfill of other american cartoons and causes AT to have more in common with japanese anime serials which give you something to hang on to, like an emotional investment — even if it isn't there isn't exactly that kind of continuity

clouds, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 19:22 (eleven years ago)

i think, and have said repeatedly, that season one is by far the weakest

Look at this joke I've recognised, do you recognise it as well? (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 16 July 2014 19:23 (eleven years ago)

still, "AWWK! YOU'RE A SOCIOPATH!" is one of the show's all-time best lines

Nhex, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 19:24 (eleven years ago)

i think it's sort of a george lucas/star wars thing w/ pen ward, like the show is good and constantly surprising mostly bc of the input of other writers, like if it had remained a total pen ward show it'd just remain merely "wacky"

clouds, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 19:24 (eleven years ago)

Yeah I can see how it could have gone stale without the development it's had. But like I've said before (this time I am aware) there are a lot of later episodes where the sap is just tipping the scale too far away from the jokes/creative surprises the show can be really great at. I like when there is more of a balance since I feel like poignant moments hit MUCH harder this way, yet many times the sap gets heavy emphasis and there isn't much time for anything else. Also, the joke writing was far more relentless and consistently clever in season 1 and episodes like Business Time, Slumber Party Panic, The Enchiridion, My Two Favorite People & Ricardio The Heart Guy etc. take a very long time before getting old.

Evan, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 23:04 (eleven years ago)

But really, to bring up that one specific point again- nobody else is bothered by the rarity of the Finn & Jake team per episode? I like the off-shoots with the other side characters as a focus but it's happening so often I get paranoid about the main talent phasing out.

Evan, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 23:10 (eleven years ago)

i wonder if it doesn't have anything to do w/ jeremy shada getting older/voice changing

clouds, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 23:12 (eleven years ago)

I did wonder if maybe Jake had receded into the background so much just because John DiMaggio had too many other projects going on.

Dan I., Wednesday, 16 July 2014 23:16 (eleven years ago)

Yeah Jake particularly is very very absent. I had a similar suspicion about other projects.

Evan, Thursday, 17 July 2014 03:10 (eleven years ago)

i'm perfectly happy with the subplots exposed and the lessening of finn and jake standalones. the father episodes and the coming of age ones were more powerful because of it.

Look at this joke I've recognised, do you recognise it as well? (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 17 July 2014 04:01 (eleven years ago)

Nhex, Friday, 18 July 2014 22:30 (eleven years ago)

I like when there is more of a balance since I feel like poignant moments hit MUCH harder this way, yet many times the sap gets heavy emphasis and there isn't much time for anything else. --Evan

I think this is a good point. Certain eps, specifically some of the ones revolving around Ice King's backstory, have felt like way too much of a feelings fest to me. But then I know a lot of Adventure Time fans eat that stuff up, so it seems useless complaining about.

Liked that episode- just weird to me that the overall absence of Finn & Jake continues (they can't have been in more than an entire three episodes this season? That's a guess but it can't be far off).

What does this mean for the show in the long run? Are the actors involved with too many other projects right now? If not, are they questioning why they have two or three lines per episode if at all lately? Will they be more prominent in episodes again soon? If not- will the show possibly end soon and leave us with spin offs?

Just curiosities.

Did anyone else here see Over The Garden Wall? It was done by Patrick McHale, who used to be the creative director for Adventure Time. 10-episode miniseries, kind of a mix of Grimm fairytales, Miyazaki, and prewar Americana, with fantastic music. OK the absence of either Jake the entire episode, or Finn, or both, or just the two of them in the very beginning is the case pretty much every single new episode and it kind of bums me out. The episodes are still very creative but they aren't particularly funny anymore or as re-watchable. Only chiming in about this because this trend is still going since 5 months ago when I wrote that comment at least.

Evan, Sunday, 8 February 2015 17:24 (ten years ago)

This whole concluding section of the season has p much completely Finn-centric.

Simon H., Sunday, 8 February 2015 17:26 (ten years ago)

maybe, but that doesn't mean it always works for the show. much as i miss the focus on F & J's friendship, i think it's been a good season overall. probably the weakest so far, but with lots of great episodes.

contenderizer, Sunday, 8 February 2015 18:14 (ten years ago)

There are lots of great episodes, it's just I wish they peppered in more (or any?) light hearted Finn + Jake adventure episodes back into the show to kind of break up the constant run of heavy side character or Finn centric feelings episodes.

Example of my issue with the ongoing tone of this show for months now:
You can argue that this is a joke in itself, but do we really need to learn that bounce-house princess has anxiety issues? It's like a self-parody of the show's obsession with focussing on side characters (main characters too) to inevitably show that they have their own cold real world personal struggles to deal with. Bounce house princess previously was in one episode as a joke where Finn and Jake are excited about a bounce house at a party then weirded out when they realize it's her. To have HER SECOND appearance become another sad character study has got to be part of the joke right?

Evan, Sunday, 8 February 2015 19:00 (ten years ago)

Also, it's not like Finn is THAT old where he can't still have some fun adventures ever so often. Suspect writers are trying a bit to make every episode deep, or are kind of stuck in that mode. Still curious whether the actors are reacting to a huge drop in lines per episode depending on who has focus.

i thought so? beleaguered and damaged creative type is possessed (they literally co-opt his head) by two gibberish spouting absurd cartoon abstractions that (as bmo puts it) are "so funny but also tragically emotional". said creative type goes through complex rigamarole to get the responsibility for these creatures off his plate but finds himself drawn back to them. ultimately they are let loose into the ether where they enact the same stories they've always told in the puppet shows but have a kind of cosmic freedom and accessibility... they belong to the world now.

Still stand by these posts, though I don't meant to come off as the designated thread grump.

Evan, Sunday, 8 November 2015 22:46 (ten years ago)

Gah, I completely lost track of this show last season. I think I drifted away because I had similar issues as Evan mentions above, though the show is generally still very good when I catch it. Enjoyed what I saw this week, and I'm looking forward to the Marceline miniseries.

It seems AT has had a lot of its geeky-internet-fandom thunder stolen from it by Steven Universe in the past year. That was really apparent at a shared panel at Comic Con a few months ago, from what I've heard. Still, I don't think SU has gotten anywhere near the general audience viewing figures that AT did at its peak.

Duane Barry, Sunday, 8 November 2015 23:28 (ten years ago)

wow, "stakes" is great. i haven't finished all 8 episodes yet, but this is probably their best run since at least a year ago.

billstevejim, Friday, 27 November 2015 06:19 (ten years ago)

it's pretty dang great yes yes!

xp I wonder if you're right about Steven stealing the Adventure Time thunder. Probably so, but I bet a lot of that is because Steven's only in its second season while AT is in its seventh (!). Also it's easy to see how internet fandom would obsess over a show that's stealthily become a wonderful pro-LGBT fable. (I still spend a lot of time on tumblr.)

Nhex, Friday, 27 November 2015 07:19 (ten years ago)

Agreed on both counts. Adventure Time really seems to have set the scene for the current crop of CN shows (although one could argue that Flapjack set the scene for AT). SU hits a good balance between telling entertaining stand-alone episodes and developing a larger mythology - I like how seemingly throwaway lines in a comic relief episode turn out to have larger relevance later on.

In other news, Gravity Falls is coming to an end :(

Duane Barry, Friday, 27 November 2015 11:40 (ten years ago)

what's the LGBT part of Steven? the 2 major /relationships/ seem to be steven + connie present and greg + rose mythologically? which isn't to say it isn't there i'm sure it could've easily gone over my stupid head.

Mordy, Friday, 27 November 2015 17:25 (ten years ago)

I was thinking Nhex was referring to the "Stakes" run of episodes, but I'm not sure now.

Evan, Friday, 27 November 2015 19:05 (ten years ago)

Everything related to fusion! The 'Stronger Than You' Garnet battle with Jasper most obviously, but also the past relationship between Rose and Pearl echoed with Steven and Connie, the implications that the war between the Gem homeworld and the Crystal Gems over Earth was largely about this too ("This is what they think of fusion!", the gem shard fusion experiments to punish the losers of the war, the kindergarten). And the gems are mono-gender too...

interesting. marcy/bonnibel seemed v suggestive to me whereas i guess i saw fusion more of like how the x-men can be a stand-in for any number of oppressed/different/other groups. as a metaphor obv it has some universal significance as well - the literal joining of two bodies is i imagine symbolically resonant for almost any human being.

Mordy, Friday, 27 November 2015 19:21 (ten years ago)

you're definitely right, and it is a credit to the show that they are developing a strong, accessible metaphor for the entire audience.
this probably would've been more in the back of my mind if it weren't for the immense online fan support and (i believe) hastily-retracted comments from SU artists who worked on the show, much like Olivia Olson

Nhex, Friday, 27 November 2015 19:39 (ten years ago)

I love these vampire episodes too! A lot of Mike Mignola influence on the character designs for the vampire crew, I think.

Dan I., Friday, 27 November 2015 20:28 (ten years ago)

"The television character does not match the plaintiff in appearance," Thompson ruled. "GBF appears as a non-human creature, a giant floating head with no body from outer space, while Plaintiff is a human being.

"And when GBF loses his title, the character literally explodes, unlike Plaintiff."

we've been feeling like it has been a little weaker lately (esp compared to Steven U) but i thought the marceline long arc was great

Mordy, Wednesday, 13 January 2016 14:56 (ten years ago)

I was feeling some of the weak stuff last season but I like the complex &adult situations this season. The good devil's in the details I think. Lots of unpredictable things with the usual amped up creativity is always a plus.

I can go into details of my favorite bits later after work

The Once-ler, Wednesday, 13 January 2016 15:02 (ten years ago)

Before I forget I would like to mention that the character reenforcement has been really strong and enjoyable when it's happening.

Probably time for this show to be put to bed, to be honest. Nine seasons has got to be some kind of record for original Cartoon Network shows, though (not counting weird stuff like SGC2C).

Nhex, Thursday, 29 September 2016 16:07 (nine years ago)

Tragic! And I think I read that Steven Universe is on indefinite hiatus, too.

Dan I., Thursday, 29 September 2016 16:44 (nine years ago)

That means they have two more seasons to resolve whatever arcs they want to resolve, while avoiding a Simpsons-like purgatory. As much as I love the series and hope that some other meal ticket for underground cartoonists arises to take its place, that endpoint seems reasonable.

As far as I know, SU is on hiatus until Thanksgiving, but it's never had a regular broadcast schedule, and it's been renewed through the fifth season at least (we're still on the first few episodes of the fourth).

Probably need some kind of all-purpose Cartoon Network thread to drag our children's entertainment-loving shame out of the darkness. Anyway, just read this older analysis of the various cultural and mythical references in Over the Garden Wall which was pretty well done. Four parts.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 21 September 2017 13:28 (eight years ago)

Also the numbering is kind of off, because this is parts 3-10 of a bigger story with Preboot/Reboot - my girl hadn't seen those and there was a bit of babbling to fill her in, which probably sounded like a kid making up a story - which tbh is one of the best bits of Adventure Time.

same, but tbh if I had a kid I would def gladly sit through the entire run despite the quality dropoff in the last couple seasons

Simon H., Sunday, 5 May 2019 22:24 (six years ago)

I watched this show pretty religiously until midway through Season 5. It never really dropped off for me, just a slow kind of lulling? Is it worth finishing?

flamboyant goon tie included, Sunday, 5 May 2019 22:51 (six years ago)

it's definitely worth finishing. it's just that the lore gets SO crazy and sprawled out that it's impossible to remember everything covered in this video

Nhex, Sunday, 5 May 2019 22:53 (six years ago)

Seasons 5 and 6 have many of my favorite episodes, and 7 has "The Hall of Egress" which might be my single favorite. After that you could probably skip to the last 6/7 episodes and get enough of what's happening to enjoy it. But yeah at that point you might as well watch it all.

Simon H., Sunday, 5 May 2019 22:55 (six years ago)

Hmm yeah I think I'll pick up from the beginning of S5 again, I LOVED the trilogy that kicked it off

flamboyant goon tie included, Sunday, 5 May 2019 22:55 (six years ago)

Watching that video made me respect all over again the series' sense of scale and zen approach to cataclysm - constant cycles of rise, ruin and renewal in different forms. Actually much more grounded than most series of any kind.

I've been going back and rewatching select eps including some I missed, partially inspired by this list

https://ew.com/tv/adventure-time-30-best-episodes/

...which is still missing a ton of my favorite episodes. I hadn't seen "The Other Tarts" and I almost died of laughter at the conclusion

Anyway for all the flailing about in later seasons it really is amazing how many killer eps there are, and all the format-busting and alternate timelines really help with that. I might end up springing for the DVD set, which is really pretty reasonably priced considering it's 22 (!) discs.

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Monday, 9 March 2020 03:33 (five years ago)

I got Jen the Blu-Ray of the second half for Christmas - six discs for five seasons. We started with filling in gaps in what we saw for season 6 (we'd seen them in the more-or-less random order that Cartoon Central broadcast them) but we've been going through the rest in order, even the ones we saw before - we finished it all yesterday, by coincidence.

We'd actually seen the final episode but none of the rest of the last season (because CC thought that was a good idea?). Which is to say that I don't really think the back half has that much flailing? All three of the multi-episode stories are there, for a start.

The episode ranking notably has as its top two episodes with Rebecca Sugar songs at the center - I thought her playing the non-spoily song from the finale at Comicon is lovely, particularly the extent to which John DiMaggio can't keep it together.

I've been watching through the entire series from the start. Considering that season six was the point I dropped off (at least watching it regularly) the first time, I'm a bit surprised at how much I've enjoyed it now. There's a lot of experimentation and expansion of Ooo lore, though it does drift off a bit too much from the show's core; there isn't very much, you know, adventure time with Finn and Jake (they even joke about it on one episode). I don't think I even understood the ending/resolution to at least three or four specific episodes. S7/8 have struck a better balance overall.

My most recent episode was the one where Tree Trunks is revealed to have alien hybrid offspring. I wonder if that painter who believes he lost his virginity to aliens was the inspiration for that one.

Watched through all of AT in the first year of Covid and felt similar by the end.

Maybe I haven't looked hard enough, but I don't think Fionna and Cake has ever been shown in the UK or Ireland in any official format. My personal theory is that it was bought by Cartoon Network UK, but they can't show any "adult" material, so it just stayed in the vaults. No evidence for this, but it seems possible. Glad I didn't bother waiting for a legal viewing option...
