yes i read twitter and tweet. i don't always read *every* tweet, because i follow somewhere around 350 people.

hauntological-hysteric theater (get bent), Sunday, 6 March 2011 01:46 (fourteen years ago)

not on twitter but i have a lot of twitter RSS feeds in my reader. probably gonna cave in soon, though

I trade stocks and tweet my trades. I follow a few ilxors but never have any idea what they're on about.

what the fuck is twitter and what do i use it for

bernard snowy, Sunday, 6 March 2011 01:58 (fourteen years ago)

I follow some celebs, but nothing so compelling that I ever log in more than 1x a week.

I tweet rarely... I have 6 and am entirely unsure what audience they're directed to (I have like 3 followers, p. random people)

Congratulations, you've just won a Nintendo iPod. (kelpolaris), Sunday, 6 March 2011 01:59 (fourteen years ago)

I used to use twitter to follow political shit 24/7 but i got a bit burned out and haven't logged on in awhile.

Threadkiller General (Viceroy), Sunday, 6 March 2011 02:02 (fourteen years ago)

also there's a couple girls i stalk via twitter since it's open access, unlike faesbuk (deleted my account some time ago to give promote productivity = works)

Congratulations, you've just won a Nintendo iPod. (kelpolaris), Sunday, 6 March 2011 02:06 (fourteen years ago)

no, I find it pretty much useless

iatee, Sunday, 6 March 2011 03:19 (fourteen years ago)

No and I don't really care for it. The only twitters I've ever seen are Ozzie Guillen and the one time some ilxor trolled Jose Canseco (which was great)

van smack, Sunday, 6 March 2011 05:34 (fourteen years ago)

question for those not into twitter: du u use facebook?

Congratulations, you've just won a Nintendo iPod. (kelpolaris), Sunday, 6 March 2011 05:47 (fourteen years ago)

everyone but you uses facebook

iatee, Sunday, 6 March 2011 05:59 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, hope I havent become obnoxious w/ mentioning of it... just seems mostly to me that the status update > the tweet in most ppl's lives. i've met the occasional who literally copy & pastes into both but i could never really figure for what reason they did it in the first place.

Congratulations, you've just won a Nintendo iPod. (kelpolaris), Sunday, 6 March 2011 06:01 (fourteen years ago)

i never do that, i make it a point to have different things in each. i don't know what exactly my guidelines are for posting in one or the other (other than length) but it is a decision i make before i write something

brigitte beardo (donna rouge), Sunday, 6 March 2011 06:04 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, twitter is just a minifeed w/ fewer features. and I guess you get to pretend like you're friends w/ celebrities.

iatee, Sunday, 6 March 2011 06:04 (fourteen years ago)

Use it to follow people I want to follow and speak to people I want to speak to. Mostly separate from every other social and internet group.

I don't use facebook

Fannypack's "Camel Toe" (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 6 March 2011 06:31 (fourteen years ago)

haha somebody I know from china just updated her status on facebook "Twitter is no more fun than Sina Microblog..."

Neu! romancer (dayo), Sunday, 6 March 2011 06:34 (fourteen years ago)

lol sina microblog is down imo

Fannypack's "Camel Toe" (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 6 March 2011 06:38 (fourteen years ago)

it's pretty funny, for every major social media website outside of china there is some chinese copied equivalent that chinese users uniformly prefer

Neu! romancer (dayo), Sunday, 6 March 2011 06:41 (fourteen years ago)

and are permitted to access by the govt

Fannypack's "Camel Toe" (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 6 March 2011 06:44 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, that too

I encounter a fair number of mainland students here in HK, and they make facebook and twitter accounts but then realize all of their friends are still on the chinese networks, so they always go back

Neu! romancer (dayo), Sunday, 6 March 2011 06:51 (fourteen years ago)

Ah yeah, that'd make sense.

(at the risk of a derail, I just signed up for sina microblog but the site is crawling)

Fannypack's "Camel Toe" (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 6 March 2011 06:53 (fourteen years ago)

I think every non-English country has it's twitter-equivalents. I met some girls during my time in Mexico who were super super fond of this bizarre tumblr-ish thing called something like "MetroGirl" or something (in English, actually). I showed them Facebook and they were totally unimpressed... said it lacked the pizazz of customizable backgrounds and the glitter font they seemed to think excellent at conveying their emotions.

twitter kind of surprisingly suits my browsing habits/interests pretty well, whereas i've never been too into myspace/facebook/etc. and tend to just set up accounts on those kinds of sites and then only log on once or twice a month to check or respond to messages (and usually ask them to just e-mail me next time).

i made a 77 thread for people to post their twitter accounts fyi everyone

ice cr?m, Sunday, 6 March 2011 16:17 (fourteen years ago)

twitter suits me really well - i follow about 120 and am followed by about 90, and a lot of them are people i know socially but don't see very often and have a lot of common interests with, so it helps me keep on top of links/news/ideas/music, without being too overwhelming or too much of a time-sink. It's the kind of phatic communication that suits me, I know what people are up to without being drained by the demand to constantly like/comment/etc.

HI DEGGERE (c sharp major), Sunday, 6 March 2011 16:22 (fourteen years ago)

i do have a bad habit of checking my retweets to see what kind of content is valued by my ~readership~ but tbh most of the time i'm posting youtubes of trax i like, links to politix i hate, and whinges about whatever i've reading that day.

HI DEGGERE (c sharp major), Sunday, 6 March 2011 16:30 (fourteen years ago)

These weird sheeplike people with vague user names who follow celebrities give me the creeps. I can understand if the person has something meaningful to say. Music makes sense, following actors unless they are activists is a little weird.

iono, I like getting career updates... I started following Nathan Fillion after he bought the rights to Firefly, and Jewel Staite just sorta b/c it's somewhat amusing to me to follow a "celebrity-that-could've-been"... which she is pretty conscious of, with the occasional tweet.

Also, I can see the appeal - it IS creepy, but a lot of actor's are quote-unquote iconic b/c their personalities translate off-screen and on...it's p cool when you find that a dude types in as much exclamation points as he does in metaphorical real life.

I don't care for Sheen or Kanye... dudes I don't care for anyway. I won't follow a celebrity simply for being one.

Crouching Seward, Hidden Raggett (kelpolaris), Sunday, 6 March 2011 19:18 (fourteen years ago)

I follow 6 bands/people and have 1 follower

calstars, Sunday, 6 March 2011 19:19 (fourteen years ago)

the answer is always: no, they're on dancing with the stars

mookieproof, Sunday, 6 March 2011 19:42 (fourteen years ago)

I pretty much only use to Twitter to constantly harass celebrities to retweet memorials to my dead grandfather

MPx4A, Sunday, 6 March 2011 20:19 (fourteen years ago)

I read a friend's twitter every couple of days (which is enough to keep up with his posts) and glance at a handful of more distant acquaintances, celebs, local news sites occasionally, but just via the website. I don't have an account or use any tweet software or rss feeds or whatever.

(I guess this is "yes but only to read" but maybe no account = "no"?)

i like how twitter is so malleable - it's easy to bend it to whatever you want it to be, there's no one singular ~twitter experience~

lex pretend, Monday, 7 March 2011 13:02 (fourteen years ago)

a lot of them are people i know socially but don't see very often and have a lot of common interests with

yeah this - it's def strengthened a lot of IRL friendships that might otherwise have been just acquaintances. actually that's true, maybe even more so, for those i don't have that many common interests with (ie wouldn't otherwise contact), but still enjoy keeping in touch with.

lex pretend, Monday, 7 March 2011 13:10 (fourteen years ago)

i started a twitter account about a year ago for professional purposes, basically it just updated automatically when i put a new post on my boring professional blog. last week i was really bored at work and i started tweeting just for fun and it turns out i'm really awesome at it. don't want to post my account here though because it's my real name. but if you know my real name you can find it. i'm REALLY GOOD at twitter.

Could someone please recommend a Twitter app for Firefox or Chrome? Echofon is great for iPhone, but it sucks on FF - can't retweet with comment, keyboard shortcuts (space bar for page down for example) are disabled, and it's generally sort of clunky feeling.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 6 January 2015 22:40 (ten years ago)

^^ Bane of my twitter existence! I use Tweetbot, and it syncs, but only in one direction: If I look at twitter on my iPad, and then go to Tweetbot on iPhone, it leaps up to where it left off. The other way around though it doesn't (this alone drives me bonkers). Let alone between different apps.

twitter etiquette question

earlier today, i was reading this artfc1ty morning links article. i enjoyed their second link, which was to an imgur set of photos with a really gross chair covered in Cheetos dust.

in a moment of foolishness, i decided "hey i guess i'll tweet about that gross cheetos chair".

not wanting to link to a collection of links and then have to explain that i'm talking about the second link in the collection (all in 140 characters), i decided to just link directly to the imgur photoset and then tag @artfc1ty in my tweet.

a little while later, i got a tweet from the artfc1ty senior editor saying "You are welcome for the Cheetos chair. @weinventyou". did i fuck up? was tagging their twitter handle not enough? was i supposed to link to their original collection of links and then explain that i was most interested in the second link?

yeah, and it's possible that they were just being nice - their site featured one of my GIFs in a best GIFs of 2014 kinda article (without attribution, ironically, but it was because they just found the image via google image search) recently, and i wrote to them to say thank you and politely asked if they could add my name on there. so maybe she just recognized me and was saying "hey, thanks for tweeting about that gross cheetos chair, internet guy"

but "You are welcome for the Cheetos chair. @weinventyou" is so ambiguous! it's all about that period. and the "you are welcome".
