DEPT. OF EXONERATIONFACE IN THE CROWDIssue of 2004-06-07Posted 2004-05-31In early May last year, a sixteen-year-old girl named Martha Puebla testified in a preliminary hearing in Los Angeles about a pair of murders that were allegedly committed by her ex-boyfriend, a reputed gang member named Jose (Peps) Ledesma. Within days, on May 12th, Puebla herself was shot to death near her front door, in the Los Angeles suburb of Sun Valley. Several months later, police arrested Juan Catalan, who was then twenty-four years old, for her murder. The police theorized that Catalan committed the crime at the instigation of Ledesma and of Catalan’s brother Mario, who had been accused of aiding Ledesma in the earlier murders. The charge made Juan Catalan eligible for the death penalty.
From the start, Catalan insisted on his innocence.“The police tried to get him to confess, but he wouldn’t do it,” his lawyer, Todd Melnik, said last week. “He kept asking them to give him a lie-detector test.” Catalan told his lawyer that he had a straightforward alibi for the evening that Puebla was shot. He said that he was with his six-year-old daughter at Dodger Stadium, watching the home team lose to the Atlanta Braves, 11-4. Melnik set out to verify his client’s story.
“I subpoenaed the Dodger Vision tapes, which show shots of the crowd, and I also got the Fox Sports broadcast of the game,” Melnik said. “I knew where Juan was sitting, and in some of the shots I could tell that the seats were occupied, but you couldn’t tell it was him sitting there.” Melnik picked up another lead, however, through his negotiations to obtain the tapes from the Dodgers. He learned that on the evening of May 12th the HBO comedy series “Curb Your Enthusiasm” had been shooting scenes in the ballpark. In that episode, which aired earlier this year, Larry David, the star of the show, attends a Dodgers game with a prostitute. (David doesn’t hire her for sex but, rather, to sit with him in his car so that he can travel in the car-pool lane on his way to the game.) Melnik asked if he could examine the HBO footage, too.
“It sounded very cool because my life is so lacking in anything interesting,” David said last week. “It did seem like kind of a lame story, but I told the lawyer, ‘Go ahead, go crazy. Look at anything you want.’ And we hooked him up with everything from the stadium, all the footage we shot that night.” On the day that Melnik came in to see the tapes, David at first left him to watch on his own, but later he stuck his head in the editing room, where the lawyer was examining the footage.
“I’m there for maybe five minutes, and the lawyer screams out, ‘There he is!’” David recalled. “We couldn’t believe it. We rewound the tape, and just as I’m walking up the aisle in one shot, this guy is sitting right there. And then there was another shot where he was standing up.” Melnik said, “Jesus Christ, if I didn’t jump three feet in the air! It was totally a eureka moment.”
The HBO footage also included time codes, so Melnik was able to pinpoint precisely when his client was at the ballpark. He also located records from a cellular-phone tower which proved that Catalan had received calls in the vicinity of Dodger Stadium at the time of the murder. Melnik presented the HBO footage and other documentation in a preliminary hearing earlier this year, and the judge dismissed the case against his client. Juan Catalan was released from jail, where he’d been for five and a half months, and he has returned to work at his father’s machine-tool shop. (Ledesma and Mario Catalan are still awaiting trial.) As for David, he said, “I tell people that I’ve now done one decent thing in my life, albeit inadvertently.”

[while ordering coffee at Starbucks] Larry David: I'll have a vanilla... one of those vanilla bullshit things. You know, whatever you want, some vanilla bullshit latte cappa thing. Whatever you got.
[after leaving a terrible dinner party] Larry: What's the level of anger here? What am I dealing with? Cheryl: Well, I'd have to say at least an 8.7. Larry: 8.7? That's not that bad. I thought it would be at least a 9. Cheryl: It was a 9. Then you broke that lamp, and the crazy woman screamed at you, and it got you some pity points. Larry: Pity points. That's fabulous, I love pity points. But how can I get to a 7? I know a 6 is out of the question, but is there any way I can get to a 7?
Larry: Nice house. Susie: Yeah, come on. I'll give you a tour. Larry: Naw, it's ok. Susie: No, come on. Larry: No, it's ok. I-I get it. Susie: You get it? Larry: Yeah, it's a house. It's new. I get it. It's nice. Susie: You get it? Ok, you know what? Get the fuck out of my house, Larry.
[repeated line] Cheryl: Why would you do that?

Cheryl is such a fantastic character. And hot, to boot. She really comes across as the only woman in the entire world who could possibly love and tolerate Larry David. She's just as intelligent as him, but has social mores and a sense of societal responsibility.
I watched all four series over a short period of time, and now when I try to watch it again I just find it too unbearable. When you know just how badly he's going to fuck things up... ugh.
Genius, none the less. At its funniest, much funnier than Seinfeld.

I think this was meant to sound positive, and if so, I agree. The first two or three episodes of the season almost turned me off the show, because they were focused on plot points that were fucking stupid. Producers. Sleeping With Another Woman. All very forced. But then I guess everything on the show is somewhat forced, and maybe these were just the things that were the least funny.
But starting in episode 4 with "Fierce" and continuing on from there, it's very very funny. On-point. Don't miss.

there's this security guard guy at work who for some reason quite clearly hates me with a burning passion. i have to pass him on the way in every day, and when he's not engaged he likes to spend that awkward period staring at me with either a grimace or smirk, depending on his mood or maybe the level of my bedhead i guess. i think his main problem with me is either my very awkward frame, which seems to inspire bizarre passions in many, the fact that i've never really acknowledged him on my way in (though this seems par for the course) or that in the early going i had a habit of 'forgetting' to wear my id badge. "where's your id badge, man?" [i hastily/lazily put it on] "you gotta wear that thing!" etc. whatever, anyway a few days ago i leave my fucking desk to take a break and head down to the basement cafeteria. there's this vending machine, dunno how common they are, that's basically a multilevelled turntable with various compartments contained wherein are various frozen/cold sandwiches, softdrinks, etc. now i've seen one of these at a previous place of work where a coworker told me he'd managed to swipe 2 sandwiches for the price of one by (i gathered) reaching around one of the compartments and somehow slipping a sandwich thru. since no one's around i decide this would be a good time to give this a try. after checking the room for cameras (!) [the very same cameras the aforementioned guard may well be peering into] i put in my money, slide open a compartment, remove the sandwich, and start digging around with my hand when the sound of cart wheels come quickly gliding into the room and stop. i pop up from my compromising, slightly hunched over position and glance to my left to find guesswho turned about 60 degrees at a dead stop, glaring at me. our eyes meet for a long couple seconds when i awkwardly open and close the compartment one last time (?) and to my minor relief hear his cart being pushed on its way.
somehow, not that funny.

i need to get hold of some of the earlier stuff: i mean, i really like the two episodes i've seen, but i couldn't understand why people were going mental about it. the idea, however, of the situations being less about LD being a bit of an arrogant, blasé chump (which is the impression i have of the character based on what i've seen) and more about him getting into situations through no real fault of his own appeals greatly.

Plus, after 5 episodes, the show is already starting to get very formulaic plotwise.
Larry is walking down the road and he bumps into someone (let's say Ellen DeGeneres, or maybe even some minor character from Ellen), and she says she's interested in doing a part for his new series, but only if he looks after her pet tarantula over the weekend. All he's got to do is go in and feed it on Saturday afternoon and the tarantula (whose name is Woody) should be fine until when Ellen gets home. Larry takes the spare key and puts it in the pocket of his sweat pants (whatever sweat pants are, I don't know).
On returning home, Larry tells his wife that he has met Ellen DeGeneres and she's interested in his show but he has to feed her tarantula on Saturday afternoon. Then the clanger: "Oh but, you were supposed to meet Seinfeld on Saturday for a round of golf". "Never mind," says Larry, "I'll meet Seinfeld for golf at 2 and go feed Woody at 6". Great!
So Saturday rolls around and Larry and Seinfeld are playing golf, quite happily. Larry hits the ball well into the roughest of the rough. Seinfeld and Larry have a minor, but friendly argument about whether he ought to go retrieve the ball or play another shot (I don't know the rules of golf, but then Larry doesn't know the rules of the modern world, so who cares?). Larry eventually gives in and goes looking for the ball. He finds it, perched next to the trunk of a tree, reaches for it, reaches for it.... stops... looks down. BIG UGLY SPIDER.
Larry realises/remembers that he is deadly scared of arachnids, jumps out of his skin, and pootles off to find Seinfeld, who he pleads and pleads with to go and water Ellen's pet tarantula, as it's getting late.
There's a minor altercation with tipping when they get back to the clubhouse with the big, brusque woman at the counter, and then a problem with the parking lever whilst trying to get out. They're late, Woody is an old tarantula and has to be fed properly or it will die. All Seinfeld needs is the key and... oh no! They're in Larry's other pants. They race home, but get stopped on the way by a traffic cop. Larry and he argue for ages and ages, the result of which ends in hot coffee being spilled all over Jerry Seinfeld.
They speed home, Jerry in tears because of the scalding. It's too much, so Larry has to go in and feed the tarantula alone, despite his arachnophobia. He gets to the house, lets himself in. Creeps around, finds the Woody the tarantula (shit scared), finds the food, THEN A NOISE!
Larry whips around frightened, knocking over a vase full of Ellen's mother's ashes (or something) and smashing it to bits. There stands the big brusque woman from the golf counter in nothing but a rather unflattering nightgown. From behind her peeps Ellen Degeneres, who starts crying at the smashed vase, and her lesbian lover starts on Larry and Larry shouts back and "It's not my fault, you said Saturday", and she's all "Well we meant NEXT SATURDAY! LOOK WHAT YOU'VE DONE!" blahblahblah "AND WE WERE ACTUALLY TALKING ABOUT WOODY HARRELSON, NOT THE TARANTULA - YOU HAD TO FEED WOODY HARRELSON!". Or some other pointless misunderstanding.
So the upshot of it all is Woody Harrelson dies of starvation, and Ellen never works with Larry David ever again.
The end.

some of the blurb descriptions on the dvd box are great,Larry dishonours a Japanese art dealer by disputing his claim that his WWII veteran grandfather was a kamikaze pilot ... Larry also suspects that the Bingo game at his fathers nursing home is rigged
Cheryl hosts a Passover Seder during which an old woman faints, a child chokes, and Larry ruffles feathers by inviting a known sex offender and picking a fight with a local doctor he believes has been stealing his newspaper
and i believe Seinfeld season 7 comes out next month, which is just monster.

Dog Latin's script up there wasn't too far off. "Ski Lift" was okay, but as soon as he tucked those edible panties into his jacket, I knew that they would come back out at a most inopportune time.
At the end of that episode, he calls Richard Lewis on a cellphone. HMMM. WONDER WHO ELSE HE COULD'VE CALLED DURING THE TIME THEY WERE STUCK ON THE SKI LIFT.

I know, the construction here is mindboggling:
Though the Post's report says that the official word is "very amicable, and no other parties are involved," the announcement follows closely upon "An Inconvenient Truth" co-producer Laurie's well-publicized tour of the US with rocker Sheryl Crow, who just adopted a child.

The interludes of larry and jerry bantering are delightful. They're even funnier than jerry's coffee shop conversations with george because larry is so much crazier that jerry gets to do what he's best at: scornful sarcasm. It's too bad there's really not that many episodes featuring seinfeld (only 2 more?).
― Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 17 November 2009 11:10 (fifteen years ago)
It's funny because Jerry is almost as much of a childish prick as Larry.
― Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Tuesday, 17 November 2009 11:13 (fifteen years ago)
xp - only one more I think. 10 episodes a season?
Jerry seems to me only to get childish (distracted) when Larry is around. When Larry is trying to get him to kick Funkhouser kicked off set he's being quite reasonable "we have a policy?"

Best Seinfeld line in this series - "trust your gut".
― Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Friday, 20 November 2009 16:38 (fifteen years ago)
I guess the joke is that Larry and Jerry are like twins (the banter in the restaurant: Jerry is left-handed, Larry is right-handed)! To me the running gag through Curb has been how the hell has Larry ever worked in comedy or with other people in anything? Even if he's funny sometimes. So in making Seinfeld he found someone like himself.
Watch this on-and-off but the way the eps are put together has really changed, huh? Far more interested in linking different scenes with assertions made five minutes before. Don't when that started.
― xyzzzz__, Saturday, 21 November 2009 12:01 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah I noticed that two - it's a lot slicker and seemingly more structured and scripted now. I don't see many scenes that feel semi-improvised - I watched an old one recently and there was one scene with Larry and Jeff in the restaurant and you can tell that Larry has just come out with something so funny, totally out of the blue, that's made the real Jeff absolutely crack up.
I guess it changed around series four? Around the time the focus of the series changed from Larry being held hostage to things totally out of his control, to Larry being a dick and bringing things on himself. Like the Wendy Wheelchair episode this series. Overall I prefer the former type.
― Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Saturday, 21 November 2009 12:31 (fifteen years ago)
absolutely loving this series, some of the plotlines are a bit contrived but it's forgivable when the jokes are so damn good. has there been much written about the whole kramer/leon thing? amazing moment when he opened the door to see leon wearing a bow tie
― NI, Saturday, 21 November 2009 16:24 (fifteen years ago)
the best part of the "reunion" is that you get to see jokes that may have been used in a reunion show, but also you get to see the actor's having fun with it. it's more playful. it's really pretty unique.
― la monte jung (cutty), Saturday, 21 November 2009 17:56 (fifteen years ago)
don't see many scenes that feel semi-improvised
Only just saw this - some kind of HBO special about the series - which seems to suggest it's still pretty improvised, but you're right it still seems less so than before - but maybe they've just got better at it?

Larry David, wood detective.
I didn't find the scenes from the Sienfeld funny in the slightest. Was that on purpose, or is it further evidence of me not 'getting' Sienfeld? (LOL Brits etc..) /the rest of it was excellent though... Mocha Joe's an arsehole, isn't he?

I think it might be you chap. I don't find Jerry's stand-up that hilarious, but I found him him to be really funny all throughout the CYE stuff, especially his interaction with Larry... I've heard the same thing from a lot of others
I agree that Mocha Joe is an asshole, although he probably could pressured Larry for a LOT more money after getting attacked by those dogs

In the episode where Cheryl has to audition for the role of George's ex, the other actress she was up against was played by Elizabeth Shue, right? I was sort of surprised they didn't just use her real name like they do with so many other ppl.
― bear say hi to me (ENBB), Tuesday, 24 November 2009 02:53 (fifteen years ago)
Maybe because in that episode her character is into threesomes and E. Shue didn't want people to think she really is?
― Nuyorican oatmeal (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 November 2009 04:56 (fifteen years ago)
Hmmm I hadn't really thought about that.
― bear say hi to me (ENBB), Tuesday, 24 November 2009 04:58 (fifteen years ago)
I dunno, there have been other somewhat famous people not playing themselves on Curb, though I'm not sure where you draw the line. I suppose Elisabeth Shue is more famous than Richard Kind, Mayim Bialik, Vivica Fox, Bob Einstein, Shelley Berman, Paul Dooley, etc.
Someone probably should've revived the jaymc + nabisco OCD TV thread last week after Vicki Lewis appeared on Curb as a character, since she also played George's secretary on Seinfeld.
― Nuyorican oatmeal (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 November 2009 05:05 (fifteen years ago)
Yes, someone probably should have.
― bear say hi to me (ENBB), Tuesday, 24 November 2009 05:07 (fifteen years ago)
He meant the Seinfeld reunion, not Jerry himself, I think. They were mildly funny, I guess - I laughed at the surrounding stuff but not the actual scenes, I don't think.
Jerry should be a regular if Curb does another season.

― sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 24 November 2009 12:13 (fifteen years ago)
Jerry seems to have taken up the time that would generally have been filled by Richard Lewis - there's been enough Jeff in this season to keep me happy.

― la monte jung (cutty), Tuesday, 24 November 2009 19:18 (fifteen years ago)
The finale was the best season-end since the restaurant scene in S3 I thought, although it got ridiculously meta they totally pulled it off. I also loved that it looked like they were totally going to over-sugar the ending and then suddenly it was right back to the old days.

Im watching this entire series, up to season 3 now. AMAZING. Wow, Larry gets into trouble with everyone in every episode. It's amazing he doesn't just snap and go postal on the world. It's like he's the eye of a hurricane, some kind of Zen master, who gets shit on constantly, yet perseveres.
It's a hilarious show, and in a way, inspiring.

yea i love how jeff is such a good dude but also pretty depraved... "i didn't want to come back to the table with an erection at passover!"

― not_goodwin, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 21:04 (fourteen years ago)
really, everyone on this show would be pretty awful in real life, with the exception of Cheryl
― Major Lolzer (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 21:07 (fourteen years ago)
I find Cheryl kind of grating personally.
― rhythm fixated member (chap), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 21:10 (fourteen years ago)
compared to everyone else on the show?!? lol
― Major Lolzer (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 21:11 (fourteen years ago)
I find her kinda hard to look at, personally, but that's sorta immaterial to her personality/role in the show. she's the "straight man" in the show, the only one who isn't a mess of anxieties and phobias and weird rules and repressed hostility
― Major Lolzer (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 21:12 (fourteen years ago)
cheryl's high maintenance and she rarely gets larry's back when he's getting it from people, even when he's right about something.saying that, imagine apologising for larry every time he leaves the house.
meh, who knows?
― not_goodwin, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 21:14 (fourteen years ago)
"weird rules and repressed hostility"i can't think of any weird rules cheryl came up with, but she is definitely a harborer of repressed hostility -- you can see it in her upper lip.
― Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 21:15 (fourteen years ago)
oh yeah she talks to psychics. that's pretty weird.
― Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 21:16 (fourteen years ago)
Halfway through season 7 now and not missing cheyrl to be honest.just watched the Denise handicapped one, talk about cringe, larry shouldn't write sex scenes for himself!
― not_goodwin, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 21:17 (fourteen years ago)
yeah the only thing I didn't like about S7 was having to watch Larry make out with people
― Major Lolzer (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 21:18 (fourteen years ago)
yeah, the kissing/clambering wheelchair scene, then motionless legs in bed :(
When cheryl and larry split and people chose cheryl, it actually made me feel sad.Funkhouser asking him to sponser him and not cheryl was out of order, i'd have said "you chose cheryl, ask her to sponser you".

this season is so funny. it's pronouncedly kinda 'boardier', you know? like in keeping with not just being about LD's divorce but in it being about him & some guys shooting the shit around a table, more.
his walk still just kills me, seeing him slouch up towards the protest at the end of the episode.

I loved how he relished being the 'social assassin' at first - the way he was casually leaning on the kitchen counter, then slowly started to walk toward Eileen with malicious glee on his face.
Also the way he mimicked the 'safe house' woman's annoying speech inflections when she came to the door.

First three episodes, especially Palestinian Chicken, were amazing, as good as the show's ever been. Fourth one was a bit dodgy I thought - I'm not keen on the episodes where Larry is so bluntly being a dick (see also Wendy Wheelchair, Good Hodgkins etc). I much prefer the episodes where he's trying to do the right thing and everything spins out of control, or where he just can't help being a dick.
― Matt DC, Friday, 5 August 2011 11:12 (thirteen years ago)
That said, Big Dog is hilarious and I hope we see more of him.
I haven't watched this show in years but am catching up w/Season 7. It feels less spontaneous than it used to, but maybe that's just because I'm more used to its style? Anyway, some great, great eps in S7. Black Swan and Hot Towel probably my favorites so far. I also still totally love Larry's ex.
― Dark Noises from the Eurozone (Tracer Hand), Friday, 5 August 2011 11:21 (thirteen years ago)
Oh and JFC @ the joke Larry's friend tells Jerry on the Seinfeld set, the one that goes on and on and ends with "You cunt's in the sink!" My god

― caek, Friday, 5 August 2011 11:25 (thirteen years ago)
xp Matt OTM on all points there. Ep.4 did seem weaker - the cabinet thing seemed a bit too contrived though.
Re-watching a few seasons I've really come round to loving Funkhouser. I wasn't sure about him to begin with but he plays a perfect straight man to Larry. Esp. in the Palestinian Chicken episode - "When did you have your orgasm, when she said she'd fuck the Jew out of you?"
I don't know that actor at all, apart from in Curb, but he's the (Funk) Man.
― Ned Trifle X, Friday, 5 August 2011 11:32 (thirteen years ago)
The first three seasons definitely feel more improvised than a lot of what came after it. I remember Season 4 feeling like a pretty sudden change of tone (and it's my least favourite probably). They've loosened a bit again since there and scenes with Jeff/Richard/Cheryl still feel broadly improvised. Chemistry between the actors helps a lot I think - you got the same feel with Jerry in S7 in a way that you don't with some of the other characters.
Hated Funkhouser at first, started to come round to him with the Car Pool Lane, now he's hilarious. Better when he's having misfortune upon misfortune piled on him though. Shame he's run out of parents to kill off really.
― Matt DC, Friday, 5 August 2011 11:33 (thirteen years ago)
One other thing I noticed and this may just be me but there's at least one moment in each show where the ADR (post-production overdubbing) is reallllly obvious; seems like in S7 they kinda leaned on "fixing" the narrative flow of a few scenes after the fact a lot (which is especially strange to me since, as I said, it feels less improvised on the whole)
― Dark Noises from the Eurozone (Tracer Hand), Friday, 5 August 2011 11:37 (thirteen years ago)
Another thing that might be just me - am I alone in thinking that Larry moves and walks like a much younger guy? Sometimes when you see him just walking down the street his whole body language is like a teenager's
― Dark Noises from the Eurozone (Tracer Hand), Friday, 5 August 2011 11:38 (thirteen years ago)

― http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKbsdMRqhcI (Princess TamTam), Friday, 5 August 2011 11:42 (thirteen years ago)
Part of the strange weightlessness of this show is that because of Larry's megariches there never seem to be any real consequences to his behavior - each episode portrays this totally self-absorbed pinball careering around the world, seeing how long he can last before - inevitably - falling down a hole. But he's always got more quarters!
― Dark Noises from the Eurozone (Tracer Hand), Friday, 5 August 2011 11:48 (thirteen years ago)
well yeah. a big part of the show's appeal is the fantasy of what it'd be like to go through life never filtering anything, and also being rich as balls. he suffers social consequences of course, or the the show would be intolerable
― http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKbsdMRqhcI (Princess TamTam), Friday, 5 August 2011 11:53 (thirteen years ago)
But the social consequences are by and large restricted to an episode, he manages to bounce back between episodes somehow. Possibly because most of the characters actually really like Larry deep down. The exception to all this is obviously his marriage but even that lasted an amazingly long time, and Cheryl still seems kinda friendly towards him.
― Matt DC, Friday, 5 August 2011 12:02 (thirteen years ago)
Haha was on the verge of writing that in the beginning I had always wondered how he wife was still with him. So in S7 it was nice to see that at least SOME kind of consequence had visited him.. It's true that in each episode he usually manages to acquire heaps of opproborium. But as you say Matt everything kind of resets afterwards. That's its link to the sitcom tradition, I guess.
― Dark Noises from the Eurozone (Tracer Hand), Friday, 5 August 2011 12:04 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah it goes back at least to Fawlty Towers. The Doll is a brilliant example of this, or Palestianian Chicken, build up to a completely chaotic and ridiculous situation and then leave without giving the viewer any idea of the way out of it. Then back to normal next week.

i think what makes the scene is lewis' pause after larry asks "do you say bin laden or ben laden" because there's a tense moment there where you don't know if he's going to go off on larry for being a dick or start riffing on the bin laden thing, and then he spins off a great yarn
― J0rdan S., Monday, 8 August 2011 21:36 (thirteen years ago)
He can't decide himself! He wants to stay pissed off but he has that 'competitive comedian' instinct too.
I think it'd be a great scene even if you cut it off before that, just for the few seconds in which they pause to consider 'Is life too short? It's too short, isn't it?'

rewatched the season tonight.
i think the palestinian chicken episode is top 5 all time. incredible.
i realised i much prefer the episodes that are larry and his friends shooting the shit to the ones that are him getting in (difficult to watch) awkward situations with strangers/new characters. and this episode was pretty much all that.

This week's was genuinely the worst episode ever, with the exception of Larry and Jeff in the periscope car, everything fell flat. Such a waste of Wanda as well.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 18:57 (thirteen years ago)

― Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 19:07 (thirteen years ago)
For real - the season has dropped off since moving to New York. There was so much comic potential in Larry, Richard, Jeff, Funkhouser and Leon broing down together that's fallen by the wayside. Loved "shit bow" though.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 14:11 (thirteen years ago)
Sort of thinking the series is suffering from a lack of a really good straight man as well, and there aren't many straight men who are as good as Cheryl.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 14:12 (thirteen years ago)
otm matt
― caek, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 14:41 (thirteen years ago)
But the series has basically traded Cheryl for Leon + Funkhouser. I'll take that deal any day.
The last NYC episode was OK, the previous two were great. The Viagra episode was an all-time classic. Maybe one has to be a baseball fan.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 15:06 (thirteen years ago)
funkhauser isn't in nyc though : ( and leon was in the last 2 seasons.
― caek, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 16:00 (thirteen years ago)
And neither of those are straight men. And both of them were in it at the same time as Cheryl.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 16:02 (thirteen years ago)
I meant that the loss of Cheryl has led to a gain in Funkhouser + Leon, roughly in terms of airtime, not the types of characters they play (e.g. the straight man). I like that they've broken away from the old formula. Instead of Larry being grounded somewhat by being with Cheryl, now he's surrounded only with people who act as ridiculously as he does.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 19:27 (thirteen years ago)
The car periscope episode reminded me of those later season Seinfelds that David didn't write, which relied on Newman or George or someone diving into the camera and Kramer coming up with some wacky invention. But those cliches feel like old vaudevillian or silent film-era comedy gags. The episode was formulaic, but Larry David and Jeff having fun with the periscope and a few other scenes made up for it. I think a weak Curb episode still rates better than most other shows.

― Clay, Thursday, 1 September 2011 01:28 (thirteen years ago)
But they are! They've gone to Broadway, they play softball in Central Park, Larry's apartment is in a skyscraper ... it's not like a Woody Allen movie where they're always fixated on what it's like to live in New York, but it's clear that these episodes couldn't be taking place anywhere else.

― not_goodwin, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 06:27 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah Leon was great in this ep, he's been great all season though. Bit disappointed by Jeff and Susie so far - Jeff needs to do more conspiring and sneaking around and Susie needs to unleash the fury more often.
Supporting characters were absolutely A++++ in this ep. The softball mechanic dude was hilarious, see also Larry's shrink. If I could laugh and stare in openmouthed horror at the same time I would have been doing that during the "director, let's say he directed Star Wars, he liked to visit prostitutes" scene.

Curiously uninvolved by the second half of this series really. It's been okay, it's definitely had its moments (Palestinian Chicken etc), overall it's been one of the worst series (I don't have much love for S4 but that at least has the amazing Car Pool Lane episode).

― NI, Friday, 23 August 2013 19:11 (eleven years ago)
I was down for a whole day with stomach stuff and watched Clear History in a sleep-deprived haze, but really enjoyed it. It's totally throwaway, not as funny as Curb, but it had some fun people in it and was just very...fluffy and amiable. It reminded me of some of the recent Woody Allen caper-ish movies like Small Time Crooks. I think any fan of Larry who has seen all of Curb would find something to like in it, but otherwise it's not going to convert anyone. I was certainly glad of it that day and now plan to visit Martha's Vineyard when I have a chance.

my gf had never seen curb your enthusiasm before, so a few nights i excitedly cued up season 1, episode 1. i remembered it as being really funny (it's the tent pants episode), but man, i didn't realize how painfully terrible the acting was in the early episodes! it was a little hard to watch - i suppose they hadn't gotten their characters down yet, or the whole improvising off of an outline thing. i skipped ahead to an episode from season 4 and it was like watching a totally different show.
― reckless woo (Z S), Monday, 18 November 2013 17:52 (eleven years ago)
You skipped directly to Season Four, of all seasons? 2-3 are a cut above everything else IMO, there's loads of great stuff throughout but those two are majestic.
― Matt DC, Monday, 18 November 2013 19:36 (eleven years ago)
oh, it was a skip ahead just for a single episode. it was more of a plea, like, "no i swear the acting isn't normally this bad, it's actually quite good, here check out any episode that is not one of the first few!"
― reckless woo (Z S), Monday, 18 November 2013 19:39 (eleven years ago)
I think the later seasons have considerably less improvisation in them as well.
― Matt DC, Monday, 18 November 2013 19:40 (eleven years ago)
Clear History is appalling. It's definitely reminiscent of latter-day Woody Allen in that it's a load of ostensibly funny people in a completely humourless movie

I've been a very intermittent watcher since it's been on, like just an episode or two here and there, and I finally have HBO and HBO Go so I went back to Season 1, and I do find it kind of halting and choppy. Moreover though I also feel like the episodes are so formulaic. I don't remember if they get a little less formulaic later.

H, who hadn't seen much of it before, complained about the fact that it's a show about people with no real problems who complain all the time. The characters are all financially set and don't seem to have goals, cares or passions. I guess part of the comedy comes out of that though, the sort of "rich people existentialist hell" atmosphere.

I have been a bit ill for the last few days and binged season 1 + 2 of this, its definitely classic for me. Some of these really cracked me up, beloved aunt, the doll's head one, the incest survivor group one. I'm sort of buzzing that there is another 50 episodes of this to watch.

haven't seen it, looking forward to seeing it, but.... Larry David has a tendency to get formulaic after a while. I like the formula, and all, but can easily see this being not better than the previous season.

This was kind of an overly cosy, slighty lazy greatest hits, but I still laughed a lot.
― chap, Friday, 6 October 2017 12:48 (seven years ago)
Felt like it was trying to cram a bit too much in (that scene with Susie at the end was particularly rushed) and I dunno, a lot of the humour felt a bit forced. This show is a lot funnier when Larry is only unintentionally a dick.
― Matt DC, Friday, 6 October 2017 12:49 (seven years ago)
To me this is the shift in CYE from the early seasons to some of the later ones. Larry just becomes more of a dick. I remember when that happened to Homer in The Simpsons it also became impossible to watch.
Not quite as bad with Curb.. but there was a drop-off.
The Guardian gave this five stars so I was immediately suspicious (same for Dunkirk and Blade Runner, what a bunch of shits)
― xyzzzz__, Friday, 6 October 2017 13:11 (seven years ago)
yea but when Homer became a dick the writing fell off in a major way too. I think the last two seasons of Curb were probably the funniest
― frogbs, Friday, 6 October 2017 13:17 (seven years ago)
You can probably explain it away by saying that without Cheryl in his life he has no incentive to NOT be a dick, but watching people shout at Larry is funnier when he's trying to be well-meaning while also being selfish and clueless.
― Matt DC, Friday, 6 October 2017 13:42 (seven years ago)
Also am I right in thinking that Ted and Mary are still together in real life? There's a lot of potential in a newly single Ted Danson this time round.
― Matt DC, Friday, 6 October 2017 13:48 (seven years ago)
The best curbs (and the best seinfelds too) have always been the ones where the 2 or 3 seemingly unrelated plot threads come together somehow for the climax, in that sense alone this wasn't a classic. But also when your two key themes are lol lesbians and lol muslims and it's 2017 that just feels a bit....uh.
(and yeah I know it's actually lol larry is a dick about X, rather than lol X, but those are still two pretty lazy and dated topics to go to).
― JimD, Friday, 6 October 2017 14:24 (seven years ago)
the foisting concept was the key theme of the episode
― you are juror number 144 and we will excuse you (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 6 October 2017 14:49 (seven years ago)
Because it was the one they used for the title? Didn't feel key in any other sense unless I'm missing a ton of subtext or something.
― JimD, Friday, 6 October 2017 14:52 (seven years ago)
I guess it seems key because it is the one concept in the episode that is at least a bit creative and more characteristic of the show. it is certainly one of the at least 4 plot lines happening throughout the episode (dead pet condolence maybe the fourth?). I'm not sure that any of these are key in the sense that they unlock subtext in the others. But I didn't watch that carefully.
― you are juror number 144 and we will excuse you (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 6 October 2017 15:03 (seven years ago)
Episode seemed pretty ridiculous to me, along the lines of many later era Curb episodes that were utterly implausible. Had a bit of "victory lap" feel to it unfortunately. A lot like later era Seinfeld, show is a lot more caricature than stories about awkward stuff that happens to actual humans.
Still, I'm sure there will be good stuff sprinkled throughout the season. Agree that show is funnier when Larry isn't *trying* to rig the game and be an ott dick.
― Dominique, Friday, 6 October 2017 15:12 (seven years ago)
yeah, I think there's likely not much difference between this episode and the last season, which I didn't like very much. But I watched seasons 5-8 at once, and the time away before this season has made me more forgiving.
― you are juror number 144 and we will excuse you (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 6 October 2017 15:16 (seven years ago)
just saw the Fatwa episode. pretty funny! yeah not as good as the classic seasons but still pretty good. i enjoyed Richard throwing that joke back to him.
there were a few moments where i was like "Oh i know where this is going" and felt like it was about to be by-the-numbers and then was pleasantly surprised. like when he went on Jimmy Kimmel i thought for sure he is going to accidentally talk about foisting and get into trouble w his ex assistant that way. lol what actually happened.

Larry was so cruel to the security guard. I don’t feel this is true to the spirit of the original series. He was selfish and casually mean but the conflicts were mostly due to misunderstandings
― Treeship, Tuesday, 31 October 2017 17:19 (seven years ago)
nah i think you're just misremembering earlier seasons, like how is that different from stop-and-chat? (and it was supposed to be harsh; you could see how guilty Larry felt when he actually had to do it!)
i kind of like how un-selfconsciously the show reflects the petty leisurely lives of rich LA assholes, it would be way worse if it were trying to do some critique other than the narcissism of small difference of 'Rich LA assholes who annoy Larry David, a slightly different kind of Rich LA Asshole'
― flopson, Tuesday, 31 October 2017 17:31 (seven years ago)
also it has been 6 years(!) since the last season of curb aired; we should consider that maybe It Is Us Who Have Changed
― flopson, Tuesday, 31 October 2017 17:32 (seven years ago)
Nah there is a definite shift in tone around Season 4, and again around Seasons 7 or 8 - Larry just becomes more of a conscious dick to people. The comedy in the first few seasons arises from Larry trying to do the right thing and/or taking shortcuts due to his essential selfishness and laziness.
I didn't enjoy this last one very much, both the setup and the arguments felt very forced, and there was too much going on in it to let most of the minor characters breathe and be funny. The episode with Lewis's art exhibition was fantastic though.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 09:47 (seven years ago)
Episodes like 'The Doll' or 'The Corpse-Sniffing Dog' are classics because Larry is well-meaning and blundering before he becomes belligerent. It's just less funny (not to mention being lazier writing) when the argument begins with Larry walking up to a minority character and going "lemme ask you something..." before saying something offensive and getting bawled out for it.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 09:51 (seven years ago)
I keep thinking about Larry's ultra-obnoxious "ta-da" when he caught the grape in his mouth.

Never watched this when it aired, but borrowed all past seasons thru the library over course of a few months. Obv liked it enough to stick with it, but by season 6 or 7 it was very samey. got grating. "ok for the love of god can't he just have 1 normal interaction with someone? does everything have to devolve into an absurdist comedy of manners? does there need to be a Seinfeld-ian disection of every single tiny social convention?". Seeing them all in a row really highlighted that there's really just one "joke" being told over and over in slightly different way. Felt like the latter seasons were so naked about doing that. Really like LD and liked this show a lot to begin with, so just wanted him to do more. Still better than 98% of tv comedy.

― Week of Wonders (Ross), Monday, 6 November 2017 06:15 (seven years ago)
Inspired by this thread, I started re-watching season 1 to see how/if things had changed. The main surprise was to remember that the show started as a mockumentary, shot on hand-held camcorders. Also linked to that, I re-discovered how much the dialogues were improvised in the beginning. By comparison, modern eps feel much more like a regular sitcom. The humor though hasn't changed much I find.
― licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Monday, 6 November 2017 10:11 (seven years ago)

― frogbs, Monday, 6 November 2017 14:19 (seven years ago)
feel like all the actors and esp guest actors in later seasons were going thru the motions of "I'm in a CYE episode. This is how you are supposed to act in a CYE episode. Ok I am now acting like I am outraged/appalled by Mr David's words and/or actions, cause I'm acting in a CYE episode and that's pretty much where the bulk of the comedy comes from. It's pretty cool that I am in this show right now, cause I am a fan of Mr David and this show. I can't wait to watch the episode where I'm actually ON the show and totally pretending to be outraged by that lovable scamp".

the only RAP: THE MUSICAL production I would get behind is a stage version of Prince Paul's "Prince Among Thieves"

Fun episode all in all, but felt kind of forced it bringing it up to date. Kind of familiar standup gripes, expecting the next episode to have Larry get fed up with they/them pronouns.

The “mocha joe” conceit is an old standby routine of Larry vs restaurants and felt kind of thin. But I liked the wobbly table. I didn’t think the harassment stuff was funny
― calstars, Monday, 20 January 2020 15:35 (five years ago)
Larry in the MAGA cap was funny, most of the rest of it hasn't been. The MeToo stuff feels lazy and tired at the very least.

yeah it's not good. I don't if I'm bad now but I almost died at the fetus punchline at the end of ep1, but it has been downhill since then and into garbage Ricky Gervais type territory.

― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 22:52 (five years ago)
I like that bit too, but Larry's understanding of MeToo is nowhere deep enough for most of the jokes to land, or often to even make sense
― MOAR PETE (sic), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 23:04 (five years ago)
idk if anything more complex than "Larry sees a boundary and crosses it, sometimes inadvertently but usually because of a mixture of hubris and assholism" is required re: the #MeToo plot points
― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 23:08 (five years ago)
Liked the first ep a lot. Larry using a MAGA hat to avoid dealing with people is prime Curb. The Jeff/Weinstein mix up also pretty good and seems like it could lead somewhere pretty funny. Leon’s great as always:“You know what I noticed? Nobody where’s those hats on backwards. If you’re gonna get your ass kicked, you wanna see it coming.”

Yeah the first three seasons or so have a basically well-meaning but petty Larry who fucks up again and again. The worse he is the less funny it is.

I have not done a side-by-side comparison of Larry’s acceptable levels of being an asshole, but... really?I’m behind on the new season, but did think the sex consent stuff in one of earlier ones was kinda gross.
― circa1916, Sunday, 1 March 2020 14:37 (five years ago)
Yeah seriously, watch The Bracelet or The Doll or The Corpse-Sniffing Dog again - tonally it's completely different. Larry is still a dick but he is usually trying to do something helpful and the humour comes from the fuck-ups along the way. He doesn't seem to delight in being an arsehole in the same way he does later seasons.
― Matt DC, Sunday, 1 March 2020 14:42 (five years ago)
I’d like to give it a full re-watch but in my mind prime Curb was after like the first season or two. I don’t think it’s at the levels it once was, but like Seinfeld it was one that really hit its stride after a little bit in.

Years ago I was in Omaha at this giant famous electronics warehouse, where they were showing off the then brand new high-definition televisions. A salesman came over and caught me admiring the picture, and started trying to, well, sell me on it. I told him the picture looked great, but if you didn't watch sports, there really wasn't anything else in HD to watch, and I swear when he tried to counter with all the HD options he mentioned Becker no less than three times.

A Page Six spy spotted the Harvard Law professor — who was once, like Larry David, a fully paid-up member of the Democratic cool kids — bumping into the comic on the porch of the island’s picturesque convenience store and community hub Chilmark General Store, and found their exchange so bizarre that they “wrote it down to remember it.”Dershowitz: “We can still talk, Larry.”David: “No. No. We really can’t. I saw you. I saw you with your arm around [former Trump Secretary of State Mike] Pompeo! It’s disgusting!” Dersh: “He’s my former student [at Harvard Law]. I greet all of my former students that way. I can’t greet my former students?”David: “It’s disgusting. Your whole enclave — it’s disgusting. You’re disgusting!”Added the stunned source, “Larry walks away. Alan takes off his T-shirt to reveal another T-shirt [underneath it] that says, ‘It’s The Constitution Stupid!’.”We’re told Dersh “drove off in an old, dirty Volvo.”

The middle episodes which had nothing to do with the plot (which this show seems to do every season) were kinda weak, particularly the one with the short limo driver. Rest was good though, particularly the last 4 episodes. The Maria Sofia actress was amazing, I had to look her up because I thought she might’ve been a Tim and Eric type casting.
Ultimately I’m pretty glad they only did one tiny Covid plot point, a show like this could do a thousand storylines on it but idk who wants to see that right now. I’m cool with TV shows just pretending the pandemic never happened.

― calstars, Monday, 10 January 2022 22:06 (three years ago)
It's ran it's course. There's some good touches but so much in the new season is recycled or horribly contrived. "Larry takes a KKK robe to a Jewish dry cleaner" is a pathetic excuse for a CYE plot. Or Larry throwing away his shoes outside the Holocaust exhibit then stealing a pair of shoes from the exhibit which turn out to belong to his girlfriend's grandfather. Tracey Ullman is always funny and probably saved the season from being a total flop, but the laughably repulsive crone is a trope that I think even Shakespeare stopped using in his later plays because it was out of date. Anyway, Stanley and Helen Roper were much funnier.
― everything, Monday, 24 January 2022 23:56 (three years ago)
Larry's "skewering" of #metoo where he videotapes his first date and asks permission for everything was seriously unfunny on top of being embarrassingly retrograde imo

I could only make it to the 2nd episode of this season, where the act of wearing ear plugs at a concert is for some reason treated like a faux pas.
― Chris L, Tuesday, 25 January 2022 00:12 (three years ago)
Eh, I think a big part of the show's appeal lies in precisely how half-assed the story ideas (and execution!) often are and how so much of it functions as a w.c. fields-ish fuck you towards entertainment industry conventions. Like he has a long list of tropes that he passionately despises and has vowed to never come near on any episode, or if so only for the sake of doing a perverse take on such. Agree that the metoo thing was dumb, but it's not surprising that in a show based around multi-millionaires grousing about how annoying everything is that there'd be the occasional misfire

I wonder if part of it (not accusing people in this thread of this, but perhaps other people that grouse about the show fall under this umbrella) is the expectation that tv programs, movies, etc. should have didacticism at their kernel(s)? (comedy stuff, like standup material esp seems to fall under these expectations) Which gets weird because a. presumably we all learn how to treat others from a preschool age, do we really need refresher courses in this from by all things an industry that is notorious for giving us harvey weinstein et al? like taking ethical prompts from wall street urgings b. hbo has insanely lavish budgets to do shows like succession (which don't get me wrong, I love -- the show I mean, not necessarily the fact that so much money is dumped into its production) which would titillate with the repeated sequences of wealth porn but then does the "this may look glamorous but being rich is actually miserable just fyi". at least curb is sort of non-judgmentally amoral and respects the viewer enough to pass judgment or not as they might care to. and the larry character is obv a huge asshole, that's unambiguous thread running through the show. but also in a sense an everyperson, who gets as irrationally bothered and mega-pettily so by the same small irritations in life that the rest of us do... this post is muddled but my point is that I much prefer the curb approach to that of other shows which presume to have some substantive moral take when in reality the production team, others responsible might prove even scummier than the characters portrayed. like, cheryl hines might be married to dumbass crank rfk jr but at least she is not doing selfies with steve bannon/alex jones! heh...

it's more Seinfeld S9 than Simpsons S9 - still funny if increasingly ridiculous and repetitive
the thing with Curb is that it focuses around one guy and a specific sort of plot. the fact that there are 110 consistently funny episodes of it is pretty insane on its own. yes there are bits that don't work, perhaps more and more as the show goes on, but I'll still watch it
really amused by the fact that Leon still lives with Larry for no real reason other than "he's a funny character". I think that attitude is what makes the show work.

IMO the Maria Sofia plot was the best part of this season, it's kind of a shame that wasn't really resolved. Seeing part of a pilot episode of Young Larry with this obviously terrible actress would've been really funny. I do think it's cool how so many Curb seasons end like a bad dream - everything falling apart at one moment, with no real way out for Larry. So they don't even attempt it and just move on to the next one.

Again, does anyone really expect Larry to be reading Twitter threads or listening to tech podcasts about crypto and why he shouldn't be accepting 5 oil drums full of cash to star in a commercial for some company?
Phone rings, Larry picks up: "Hello? Yeah, OK, yeah, uh-huh.. crypto? Uh yeah not really. Uh huh ...bitcoin sure. Not a clue. Computer money, got it, fantastic. Look anyway, I've got to get go- oh? How many oil drums of cash you say?"

I so badly want this series to stick the landing but Irma and Maria Sofia are almost a non-starter for me. Easily the worst characters of the series. Only prime Leon and Richard Lewis can save it.

ooh didn't realize it started already. I liked both those characters btw
didn't Larry recently say something involving the Seinfeld finale was going to happen soon? wonder if he's referring to something that's gonna happen in this series

― brimstead, Friday, 9 February 2024 20:38 (one year ago)
Deep down, I thought this first episode back was bad telivision. But deeper down I don't care about that because it's Curb and it's bloody great! Leon's back, Larry's back, they can make the worst television in the world in this offensively formulaic way, and I will still gulp it down every week and say thank you very much sir afterwards
AI's next step is being able to create Curb episodes from scratch. The formula is so there for it.
― H.P, Saturday, 10 February 2024 00:52 (one year ago)
it was okay. I dont mind Irma or Maria Sofia, imo the issue with this was the storyline with the wealthy South African guy which feels like a slight variation of a plotline they've done 7 or 8 times now
― frogbs, Sunday, 11 February 2024 17:51 (one year ago)
the return of this show did remind me of what is probably my favorite Seinfeld moment though
there's an episode where Jerry and Elaine are outside and they spot Frank Costanza, who is talking with a mysterious man in a cape, played by Larry David. George spends most of the episode trying to figure out who this man is. it turns out to be his lawyer. at the end of the episode there's a woman who Kramer may have impregnated who is considering throwing herself off a bridge. Larry David shows up to save her. she looks at him and says "Who are you?" and he just replies, "I'm Frank Costanza's lawyer"

First episode was way too rushed or overstuffed? Pacing was way off to me, the Larry vs. maid part felt forced... idk! It felt more like a cartoon based on Curb than the show itself.
― Evan, Monday, 12 February 2024 17:31 (one year ago)
yeah, it felt overstuffed to me. the car phone scene I didn't like. what was the point of it? if it was established that siri was messing up and calling people, then it ties into the end.
the lunch tray scene too - he takes the tray. ok, that's it?
i liked the show, but the show used to be tighter

― paisley got boring (Eazy), Tuesday, 13 February 2024 04:27 (one year ago)
First episode was way too rushed or overstuffed?
Given how Curb episodes work, I expected Leon's cake-slice stealing to be what gets Larry kicked out of the party somehow. For this show, weird to have just a comic loose end that doesn't have consequences.
― paisley got boring (Eazy), Tuesday, 13 February 2024 19:27 (one year ago)
yeah I was wondering about that too it's almost like an entire plotline got cut out except for one scene. they don't really ever dangle loose plot threads out like that do they? that was Seinfeld's thing too, every little side bit would always come back
― frogbs, Tuesday, 13 February 2024 19:29 (one year ago)

feel like the long break between seasons is kinda hurting it, I mean It's Always Sunny did a Giuliani hair dye joke two seasons ago, and the water bottle thing Larry got arrested for was so wrapped up in the insanity of the 2020 election that I think most people forgot about it. anyway this episode was better than the first even if pretty much everything in it rehashes something from the show's past. it's still funny but I'm glad this is the last season. at this point I'm convinced Larry is gonna try to end this exactly the same way Seinfeld did.

feel like the last few seasons have all been like that - first few episodes drag, then it gets good after that
definitely seems like he's gonna re-do the last episode of Seinfeld - I think every episode so far has had a pretty overt reference to the show (Ted Danson and the pen this week) - also Larry saying "I could go to jail for a year!" kinda gives it away

sometime during the 2000s, Spirit airlines had celebrities record the airline safety information that would be played before takeoff. Richard Lewis was one of them and it was so hilarious they even allowed his to be played. I remember the part during the "in case of a water landing" section and he makes a crack that was essentially "you're dead if that scenario even happened."

its got to end with some link between him getting free of Irma but then going to jail or having to chose between supporting Irma or jail, and him choosing going to jail.

except RFK wasn't running when this was written/filmed, also I don't think it's really well known that Cheryl is married to him? but yeah it's pretty strange.
last episode was kind of strange in that you had Conan playing himself, but Steve Buscemi also pops up *not* playing himself, although he's not a character in the show
― frogbs, Wednesday, 27 March 2024 21:32 (one year ago)
RFK WAS being a weird anti vaxxer covid conspiracy guy during filming tho
― kurt schwitterz, Wednesday, 27 March 2024 21:39 (one year ago)
true but most people didn't even know there *was* a Robert Kennedy then, much less that he was married to Cheryl from Curb
I'm definitely very curious how it's all gonna end. obviously Seinfeld's finale was considered a dud which I know is a bit of a sore spot for Larry, so its kind of interesting how hard he's telegraphing that the exact same thing is gonna happen in Curb. in fact he's been telegraphing it so hard that I'm convinced there's gonna be some major bait and switch here. at first I thought he's gonna die somehow in the finale but they already did that way back in like Season 5 right?
tbh I'm not sure how Seinfeld should've ended either, dealing with finality in a show where the characters never change and a bunch of plots just go unresolved (didnt Kramer get a girl pregnant in one episode and it was just never mentioned again?) must be pretty difficult. though I kind of wonder, did people think it was that disappointing at the time? I mean just binging through the show it's pretty lame but at the time bringing back all those characters and catchphrases must've been pretty cool.
― frogbs, Wednesday, 27 March 2024 22:20 (one year ago)
I liked the premise of the Seinfeld finale indicting the cast as villains all along but the execution came off as a pandering catchphrase-laden victory lap, but the fatwa season inverted that premise (Larry being tried and judged to be the hero the entire time... in the eyes of Iran's secret police!) and I think that worked much better!
― Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 27 March 2024 22:52 (one year ago)
Right and that one brought back a bunch of minor characters so I can’t imagine he'll do that again
I thought the idea of Young Larry becoming a huge hit was a good premise for the final season but it hasn’t been mentioned since episode 1
― frogbs, Wednesday, 27 March 2024 23:30 (one year ago)
Best to treat it as a sitcom that happens to have season-long arcs, rather than expecting in to culminate in some multi-season culmination.

ok so one thing that kinda bothered me about this one was Larry needing "clearance" to talk to Conan, when in reality if anything it would be the reverse
but it got me wondering how big a celebrity Larry is in the Curb universe - obviously the show Curb doesn't exist within Curb so isn't it likely no one but Seinfeld nerds would actually know who Larry David was? so how does a show like Young Larry get made? would anyone watch a sitcom about Chuck Lorre's childhood?

― frogbs, Monday, 8 April 2024 17:56 (one year ago)
