Former 'Saturday Night Live' cast member Victoria Jackson recently voiced her outrage over the same-sex kiss between Chris Colfer and Darren Criss on 'Glee,' and it seems she's not slowing down her anti-tolerance crusade any time soon.
Jackson appeared on 'Showbiz Tonight' to defend her argument against the portrayal of gay relationships in the media.
"I'm really concerned about our country because immorality is, well, let's see: Secular humanism rules the airwaves, and it's stealing the innocence away from this whole generation of children. My daughter is a teenager, and I cant find any show that she can watch," said the former 'Celebrity Fit Club' star.
In a follow-up to her statement that Muslim-Americans are "plotting our demise," Jackson questioned the "agenda" of media that promotes equality for all individuals, regardless of background. "I just want to know why the liberals are pro-Muslim and pro-gay," she said. "Muslims kill gays. That's what's confusing to me. And the only thing I can come up with is the Muslims hate God and the gays hate his word."
Despite calling the kiss between Colfer and Criss "sickening" in her latest post for conservative website World Net Daily, Jackson brushed off accusations that she is homophobic. "That's a cute little buzzword of the liberal agenda. Basically, the Bible says that homosexuality is a sin," said Jackson, although she later backtracked, saying, "I have gay friends, and we love each other."
When asked whether or not she thought there was any credibility to the argument that 'Glee's' portrayal of loving homosexual relationships might help kids who are struggling to be accepted, Jackson responded, "It's not helping. They should have a celibacy campaign and tell kids that 50 percent of teenagers now have this new STD from oral sex. That's what they should try to be doing instead of trying to make kids gay."
She continued, "This culture is affecting our children and making them run away from Jesus Christ. God can't bless this nation if we are spitting in his face."

as a kid I was fascinated by her, because she was so hard to read -- hovering in this space that seemed mostly like a clever put-on but was too weird to entirely be that -- and it seemed more captivating than the other things on TV, which at that point were rarely difficult to understand. since then it has been both disappointing and fascinating to learn that (a) she's resentful about the roles and type she played, and was not in control of them, and (b) she seems horrible and mean and not clever at all.

I don't know her work so can't comment on her herself. So don't know if she was funny in the first place.
Had thought that SNL was the closestc the US 70s came to alternative comedy & therefore the political slant would be leftist. If such a thing can be manifest on US tv at all. It is several decades since the show started so it could have become progressively conservative in that time. i think I'm more 'aware of its existence' than familiar with it at all. not sure how much of it I've ever seen, let alone recently. Was this a political slant she was openly proferring all along or one that she developed later? I'd think rubbing shoulders with other showbiz types would be a bit difficult if you're that anti-gay, though she did 'correct' herself.
― Stevolende, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 11:21 (fourteen years ago)

Had thought that SNL was the closest the US 70s came to alternative comedy & therefore the political slant would be leftist.
Michael O'Donoghue, the first head writer of SNL, was a Dadaist dope-smoking hippie who had contempt for all institutions and politicians, like the National Lampoon magazine from which he sprang. Ever since Lorne Michaels returned to produce the show as an utterly safe, risk-free cash cow, its politics have been virtually nonexistent save to celebrate and showcase quasi-fascist New York mayor Rudolph Guiliani.
But this dumb cow was on the show between the two periods, in the '80s, when Dick Ebersol produced. She hasn't done anything of note in showbiz in 20 years, why is she receiving any face time at all?

Sarah Palin: The Perfect Feminist by Victoria Jackson The perfect Feminist is Sarah Palin. She is beautiful, thin, even athletic, successful, happily married, a good mother and a grandmother. She’s got it all – everything those Suffragettes were fighting for back in 1920. Not only can she vote, she got voted for! And, she was a great Governor. She’s got everything those sixties Gloria Steinem’s wanted. But, the Gloria’s won’t admit it because Sarah thinks “right.” Liberals want tolerance, but only for themselves.

ugh, this is probably not the place for me to rant on this topic, and just another in a long run of "hey ILX, let ME tell you what's not funny", BUT.......SNL in general kind of makes me sympathetic to the Lex's claim that he hates all comedy. imo the early years have dated very poorly, and if they were ever funny, it was probably because the audience was massively stoned/drunk and hadn't really been exposed to that sort of shit before. fucking JIM belushi is funnier than john; granted, for all the wrong reasons, but whatever...
when i was in junior high school i would watch the christopher guest years, and oh, i thought the show was SO LOL, but i doubt much of that holds up well anymore. billy crystal? yark. and ever since the godforsaken david spade-ish/jon lovitz-ish years, it's been sooo painfully self-congratulatory to sit through. like the stuff of comedy nerds/improv geeks. ouch. i mean, if you're doing a recurring character and the response is more applause and cheers-geared than actual laughter, then you are blaspheming comedy imo.

To bring out the old trope "everyone thinks the best SNL is the SNL that was on when they were 13," and it's probably true, but I think the Carvey/Lovitz/Hartman/Hooks/Dunn/Jackson/Nealon, etc. cast was probably the most well-oiled machine the show ever had, and a ton of those sketches still make me laugh just thinking about them.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 17:10 (fourteen years ago)
snl also has a majikal ability to make funny people not funny. most sane people have a love/hate thing with that show. it comes with the territory. what drives me bonkers is when i see how easily they could make the show better and funnier. but that has driven me bonkers for decades.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

I'll grant that it's the exceptions that don't date poorly but when stuff has a really solid conceptual basis underpinning it - stuff that transcends pop-cult references, for example - it does last, and it is really amazing (would include the Marx Bros, Steve Martin's standup, Richard Pryor's standup, and Kids in the Hall in my short list)

i think a lot of this is due to practically no one learning their lines for the live sketches. watch the cast members' eyes - 99% of the time they're not actually looking at each other, they're looking offstage to the teleprompter.

anyhow, i was hanging out with my brother years ago and he rented that movie and asked me if i liked them, and i was like "sure". so we both sat there watching it, and i don't think either of us so much as cracked a smile the entire time? like, it was dire. and i sort of remember reading reviews around the time it came out talking about what a horrible, curiously unfunny misstep it was...

I rented Brain Candy the summer after I graduated with my best friend when my folks were out of town and we hung out every day and got stoned. i just get so mystified by how wide-ranging people's responses are to stuff sometimes.
I was pondering this and started writing this huge wall of text post about how nostalgia affects what people thinks is funny, but the thread moved too fast and I ended up deleting it. But, the basic gist is that I have a few friends my age who are super nostalgic about things that made them laugh when they were young, and I am not that kind of person at all. For me an element of surprise is crucial for me to really fall out laughing at something. I can laugh about a joke/bit two or three times, but it gets less enthusiastic each time. I recently watched The Blues Brothers - one of my favorite movies as a kid - and not only did I barely crack a smile, but I found myself kind of embarrassed a few times. For one of my friends, things seem to get funnier the more times he sees a bit he loves. He still watches the Chappelle Show and laughs as hard as he ever did at his favorite bits. I think maybe a few of the posters on this thread are also like that which may explain the disparity.

am I the only one on this thread who thought the Chapelle Show was kind of lame? only things I lol'd about from that show was the Mad Real World, and the Rick James ep...
― Destroy A. Monsters (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 18:40 (fourteen years ago)
It's kind of the opposite for me with Chappelle's show. I know that it's kind of a golden calf but already the show feels very dated...a lot of the jokes only really work in the context of 2003/2004. Also it's becoming harder to forgive the small amount of content that you get with each show; dunno if it's true but that show always seemed to have the most commercials, plus the musical guests.
Shows like the Simpsons and Seinfeld are the ones you can watch over and over and generally find funny every time. I know what you mean though rockapad; I used to absolutely love movies like Spaceballs and Men in Tights and nowadays I don't think I find anything about them funny.

"To bring out the old trope "everyone thinks the best SNL is the SNL that was on when they were 13," and it's probably true"
mostly because the level of SNL humor is and always has been aimed at 13 year olds

Maybe the mind tends to romanticize things. I remember seeing a sketch when I was about 13 that had Jerry Seinfeld hosting a game show where the contestants were all Jerry Seinfeld impersonators. Of course NBC being NBC it's impossible to find that clip online anywhere for some reason but I remember it being hilarious. I'm almost sure I'd be disappointed if I saw that today.
― frogbs, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 18:50 (fourteen years ago)
btw my other post was supposed to be xp, I guess I kind of agree with you although it was generally very funny...I just think it's going to get kind of a backlash in the coming years. I don't think the jokes hold up well.

SURELY this won't be true of those who are or were 13 for the last 5 or 10 yrs to now????? It is just truly dead now, excepting very few sorta funny bits, which usu include Justin Timberlake.

Yeah the last thing I really thought was funny from them was "Lazy Sunday" and that was a really long time ago. Mostly I just remember how hard it was to find the video since NBC insisted on taking it off the web every time they came across it, which is one of the dumbest things they could do - I mean SNL has been irrelevant for so long, why pass on the free advertising?
Last one I watched (because I had left the TV on too long) had this sketch about the "lost Soul Train episodes", which seemed like a great premise but they did it so terribly.

So many of the sketches are simply...nothing. It is like watching them doing a version of a sketch in which the real writing has been replaced with dummy or place-holder words. It's like the lorem ipsum of comedy. If that kind of nothing happened were just a characteristic of a sketch here and there, I would think they were conceptual bits, but that's not what's happening. No exaggeration, I think the writing is overall better on pretty much every shit sitcom I have ever seen on WB or wherever else D-grade sitcoms are featured.

― Darin, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 22:22 (fourteen years ago)
it's not just nothing. well it is, but the nothing gets slowly amped up, through to the end of the sketch. it's like a rock band who thinks that all good songs just need to get louder and louder and louder until they stop. so the structure goes:
0 + 2(0) + 3(0) + 4(0) + 5(0) ...
and on and on. but it's true, the thing that's being multiplied is zero, so it still ends up being zero.

But the actually funny eras of SNL were written in a week.
My comparison of shitty SNL to shitty WB sitcoms (I've resisted the obvious portmanteau over and over) was more about how no one expects anything from unwatchable WB sitcoms, yet they are no worse than SNL, a comedy institution.
― Jesse, Thursday, 24 March 2011 00:02 (fourteen years ago)
I get enough chuckles from SNL in any given week to continue watching it. There are some terrible sketches, to be sure, but there are also some truly inspired bits. As Scott says, a good percentage of the funny ones are pre-taped. I also generally enjoy Weekend Update, too.

daily show comes up w/ lol material 4 nights a week. obv not the same as sketch comedy, but ds still beats weekend update 4 times over when they're basically playing the same game.
I don't even think the live-aspect matters much - usually it's not not-funny because of the acting but because the underlying joke isn't that great or is only funny for like 15 seconds and then they make it last 4 minutes.

i sort of get the sense that SNL is seen as a stepping stone for a lot of writers and actors, so while you get a lot of talent theres less of a focus on "make the whole show good" and more a focus on "how can i stand out the most"--i think this is esp. true of actor-driven character skits which are typically the most uneven and absolutely the worst when theyre unfunny

I think SNL also tries hard to appeal to a range of comedic sensibilities: there aren't that many shows that, week in and week out, attempt political satire, pop-culture parodies, straight-ahead topical jokes, short dadaist films, character-driven sketches, etc. Not to mention lowbrow gross-out humor vs. absurdist/intellectual stuff. Probably why the show sometimes feels not-so-funny is that it spreads itself too thin.

Lorne has admitted that SNL's model is "if you don't like this sketch, stick around for the next one." He purposely gears the show each week to appeal to as many different tastes as possible. That's why if you're really into one style of humor, half or more of any week's show won't seem particularly funny to you.

If memory serves, all of the above sketches were on that Replacements episode. Certainly That Black Girl was. It's fucked up that Danitra Vance wasn't brought back (r.i.p.) And Damon Wayans had his moments. I seem to recall Miller not really finding his footing until the next season, though. I was a fan of his from his Letterman appearance(s?), and was disappointed with how he performed/was used on SNL that first season. Then again, "Today's winning number is pi" was one of those, "Hey, wake up, something on SNL didn't suck!" moments.

― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 24 March 2011 21:11 (fourteen years ago)
according to Wikipedia one reason Stefon comes across so fresh (and why 60% of the time Hader is dying while portraying him) is because Hader the first time Hader sees the outlandish shit he's describing in all of these clubs is during the Weekend Update broadcast
― 'lol u stuck with me now watch this ass expand, joeks on u' (DJP), Thursday, 24 March 2011 21:15 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah, I saw him say that on a late night interview somewhere (probably Fallon?). The writer he creates Stefon with changes the club descriptions between dress and air so Bill has no idea what he's going to say until he sees it on the cards.

"Driving to the Atlanta airport, I thought about G, my lifelong college friend from Auburn. He drove with me cross country in my 1980 beat-up Toyota Starlet when I went to Hollywood to be an actress. He was the only person who believed in me. He knows all of my sins. I know a few of his. I always tell him I don't believe he is 'gay' – we went on a date once and even kissed. We wrote a screenplay together. He loves drama. I can picture him now laughing, 'Victoria, what are you doing?! Your career! You'll never work again in Hollywood! Oh, but Hollywood loves a scandal!' And, then the twinkle in his eye. I can see my best friend A, who I also tell is not 'gay,' saying in his British accent, 'Victoria, my shiny, shiny friend! I still love you!' and then the big hug!"

people really see "the Will Ferrell era" through rose-colored glasses now, but seriously those years were chock full of Molly Shannon and Chris Kattan and Cheri Oteri and Jim Breuer being excruciatingly annoying, and tbh Ferrell was often just as bad as them. if anything the show benefited more from having the balance of a dependable impressionist like Darrell Hammond.

things in america are worse than i thought. in oklahoma, a man was found innocent of beating his wife because his act was authorized by sharia law and therefore protected by the freedom-of-religion. but christians cannot say "praise jesus" in public because doing so favors christianity and is therefore prohibited under the freedom-of-religion.
victoria jackson says that muslim men are allowed to behead their wives in america, because it is an act of religious freedom. this is terrible.

It's worth it just for this:
Look, I'm not qualified for this, Victoria recalls thinking. Maybe this is my mission field. I'm supposed to tell my cast members about Jesus! But Hartman didn't want to talk about the Son of God. And Lovitz asked how Jesus, "a grown man," could have fit in his mother's womb to be born again. When Victoria left audiocassette box sets of the Bible in each castmate's mail slot for Christmas, they were angrily returned.

A Connecticut judge ordered Victoria to pay Nisan alimony of 15 percent of her income, but not less than $3,000 a month, for three years. He also received a portion of the residuals from her films and, less financially momentous, her catalogue of ditties such as "I Am Not a Bimbo" and "I Wanna Be a Slut." (Victoria sells her songs on a self-published CD called Use Me. "Even my friends haven't listened to it," she admits.)

Also:
After the divorce, Victoria reconnected with her former fiancé from Miami, Paul Wessel — who had become a badass Miami-Dade Police SWAT officer. In 1984, according to Paul's personnel file, the tip of his pinkie was shot by his own partner in a firefight with a drug suspect. In 1991, with a single round he killed an Opa-locka man who pointed a revolver at officers. At an inquest, the man's widow beseeched, "Why did they have to shoot him in the heart?" Paul's lethal actions were ruled justified. One year later, he used a shotgun to obliterate a pit bull that was attacking his partner. To date, Paul has been honored with 71 department commendations. But Paul had a competitor. This potential couple would have been the insane D-list Brangelina. "I kind of had a crush on Weird Al Yankovic," Victoria confesses. "We kind of went on a date, but I don't know if he loved me or not."

Florida, so blame Alfred.
She wrote: “I disappeared for awhile because my family just moved to TN!! I love it so much! Smack dab in the buckle of the Bible belt. I'm gonna fight the Murfreesboro Mosque and Agenda 21 because I love this land, God's country. One of my neighbors keeps his horse in his front yard! I love that! I saw a cardinal, a bunny, a bird's nest and a calf in the middle of the highway. I'm in heaven!”
Though I thought this was more telling:
When asked for contact information for Jackson or for the person who handles her media inquiries, Bob Grabow said he didn't have that memorized and hung up. He later emailed the number of another agency, which didn't immediately return a voicemail.

there's a decent local brewer in Murfreesboro and my SIL lives there
and thus ends my list of things I like about Murfreesboro

If I do end up moving down south (something I have been thinking about for health reasons), it's not going to be Murfreesboro.

the only thing i miss about murfreesboro is Kleer-Vu Lunchroom which is probably in my top three favorite restaurants all time

Every time I go to Murfreesboro, something bad happens. My car has been rear ended, my wallet has been stolen, I've gotten food poisoning. Just last month, the bank put a stop on my check card because of "suspicious activity," never mind the fact I'd been in Nashville all weekend spending just like I usually do. They must know how I feel about Murfreesboro.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 14:48 (twelve years ago)
Murfreesboro is the place where everybody who ends up making country music in Nashville goes to college, right?
― ḉrut (crüt), Wednesday, 8 May 2013 14:49 (twelve years ago)
MTSU casts a pretty wide net, but you're partly right. (Belmont, in Nashville itself, would be the other big candidate.)
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 14:51 (twelve years ago)
I lived in Murfreesboro for about a year in the early 90's. I guess it was OK?
