The FBI declined to further investigate after its initial acceptance of the case, stating that it had not been able to find evidence that Debbie Swenson's accepting of gifts for "Kaycee" constituted a dollar amount above their threshold for financial crimes.[25][26]

Swenson was apologetic for the hoax, but said that she believed the Kaycee character had also done some good. "A lot of people have problems", she told the New York Times. "I know I helped a lot of people in a lot of different ways."[1]

In 1852, Gruzinsky died at the age of 89 at his estate, allegedly in a fury at the sight of a peasant entering his house with a hat. He was interred at a familial burial ground at the Transfiguration Church of Lyskovo.[2]

Lawrence Joseph Bader, (1926 – September 16, 1966) was a cookware salesman from Akron, Ohio, who disappeared on a fishing trip on Lake Erie on March 15, 1957. Declared dead in 1960, Bader was found alive five years later, as John "Fritz" Johnson, a local TV personality living in Omaha, Nebraska.[1][2]....

The malignant tumor that cost Bader his eye eventually resurfaced. Bader/Johnson died on September 16, 1966, at St. Joseph's Medical Hospital in Omaha. His death meant that the question of whether he was an amnesiac, a schizophrenic, or a hoaxer was never resolved.[3]

Dexter was born in Malden, Massachusetts. He had little schooling and worked as a farm laborer at the age of 8.[1] When he was 16, he became an apprentice to a leather-dresser.[2] In 1769, he moved to Newburyport, Massachusetts. He married Elizabeth Frothingham, a rich widow, and bought a mansion[citation needed]. Some of his social contemporaries considered him unintelligent[citation needed]. Many of them gave him bad business advice to discredit him and make him lose his fortune.[citation needed]....

Dexter decided to buy a huge house in Newburyport from Nathaniel Tracy, a local socialite, and tried to emulate them.[1] His relationships with his wife, daughter, and son also suffered. This became evident when he started telling visitors that his wife had died (despite the fact that she was still alive) and that the woman who frequented the building was simply her ghost.[1] In one notable episode, Dexter faked his own death to see how people would react. About 3,000 people attended Dexter's mock wake. Dexter did not see his wife cry, and after he revealed the hoax, he caned her for not grieving enough.[6]
