Try the internet.
― ailsa, Wednesday, 4 May 2011 08:09 (fourteen years ago)
Are you a Brit? http://www.hotukdeals.com/mobiles/deals/hot would be a good place to try.
― Cluster the boots (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 4 May 2011 08:24 (fourteen years ago)
Serious answer: go to Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U and see which one offers you the best deal. Don't get talked into the first deal the first shop offers you. But first, speak to TMobile and see if you get an upgrade based on your current deal. Go armed with the info you get from that website Billy linked to, because they'll probably better it, even if just by giving you a cashback deal (I got £50 for my old PAYG which Virgin offered to buy back from me online for a fiver).
You can get an HTC Wildfire from around £15 per month depending on how many minutes/texts/internets you want.

anyway i thought maybe someone would have, like, personal experience w/ a particular phone or might tell me why apple is no good or have some perspective on the best way to go about this -- googling phone plans is one thing but doesnt really give you an idea of, like, whether a service has lots of dropped calls, or weak coverage, or a hidden fees, etc

I don't know what it's like in Chicago but AT&T in New York and San Francisco seems to be dropped call bonanza; assuming the T-Mobile merger goes through, this will likely change.
― Dreaded Burrito Gang (DJP), Wednesday, 4 May 2011 17:31 (fourteen years ago)
doesn't the service also depend on where you live?
― sarahel, Wednesday, 4 May 2011 17:32 (fourteen years ago)
AT&T is ropey in the loop and Southside but OK on the North side in my limited experience. $49 for iPhone 3GS plus contract seems like an OK deal and its still a decent phone even if it is a bit old.

― geeks, dweebs, nerds & lames (D-40), Wednesday, 4 May 2011 17:41 (fourteen years ago)
xp: yeah they've totally put the price on that in the basement, at this point it makes little sense NOT to get one if you don't have one and are even slightly interested in the iPhone (although I still maintain that the 4 is the phone I wanted from them in the beginning and if I was doing it over I'd likely have some flavor of Android phone)
I've never been on anything but Cellular One/Cingular/AT&T my entire cell phone life so I have no idea.

Have a friend with mad graphic design skills create a 'work badge' with your picture on it and the name of the opposite wireless telecom company you want to get a phone from - bring that fake badge into the store with you. Find the phone ya want. Go to counter to pay, then mention - 'oh, I work for XYZ competing telecom,' do you have any spiff deals for competing telecom employees? Guess what - they will - anywhere from 5 to 12% off your monthly bill. All the telecoms have this little relationship b/c of shared infrastructure, SLAs on that infrastructure, shared contracts with vendors, etc. etc. This works, and they never check your employment.

hey UK people, I'm looking for a smartphone that would reasonably double up as a general computer use modem, and I'm kind of wondering if this is reasonable. I know that e.g. T-Mobile's 'unlimited' broadband has a fair usage policy of 1gb which renders it pretty useless and I've heard that some phones/providers are more difficult to modem-ise than others, so does anyone have any recommendations?

― Claudia Schiffer Kills Frog (Leee), Monday, 1 October 2012 03:14 (thirteen years ago)
why would you get a smartphone and not, say, an ipod touch?
― paleopolice (c sharp major), Monday, 1 October 2012 09:08 (thirteen years ago)
oh wait because you want the smartphone to function as a phone as well, i get it, never mind, ignore me.
― paleopolice (c sharp major), Monday, 1 October 2012 09:11 (thirteen years ago)
i assume it's possible if you already have the phone you want. If you don't, don't expect low carrier-subsidized phone prices unless you sign up for the 2-year jail sentence, or pay full price for your new phone.
I'd consider this (US only, i think) if the phone didn't cost $278. Still, only $20/month for voice & data is nice. They route your calls over wi-fi when available, and falls back on Sprint's CDMA network for voice otherwise.
Thus far i've been going the cheap dumbphone + iPod touch route, but it would be nice to carry around only one device.
― Lee626, Monday, 1 October 2012 09:48 (thirteen years ago)
sign up for the 2-year data plan, i meant
― Lee626, Monday, 1 October 2012 09:49 (thirteen years ago)
I know that for AT&T at least, even if you don't get a dataplan, if they detect that you're using a smartphone, they'll automatically sign you up for a data plan (true story) (happened to me)

Is this the right place to ask for a recommendation? My trusty iPhone4 is on its last legs and I need an upgrade. I heard the Nokia 920 is supposed to be good but I'm looking for something that has plenty of storage space for music, an easy-to-use music interface (hate iTunes), durability, and good to use with FB and Twitter etc, particularly in 3/4G areas. Also I ternd to use my phone for recording and music stuff, so that's worth bearing in mind.
