buttwalk (electricsound), Friday, 3 June 2011 05:25 (fourteen years ago)

Last 2 thred titles have meant squat to me :|

The man who mistook his life for a FAP (Trayce), Friday, 3 June 2011 05:29 (fourteen years ago)

last one was a song by the moody blues, called "forever autumn". i believe it was some sort of FM radio "hit" back in the day

this one is taken from a song by popular beat combo "the fall"

buttwalk (electricsound), Friday, 3 June 2011 05:30 (fourteen years ago)

also "i" need a beer and a "lie down"

buttwalk (electricsound), Friday, 3 June 2011 05:30 (fourteen years ago)

I will need several bevies and lie downs after moar spring cleaning tonite. Last night N had a v v nerdy annoying friend over (the kind of guy who laughs asthmatically at his own renditions of scenes from dorky comedy movies) so I hid in the kitchen and actually scrubbed walls and the sink for want of something better to do. Will be spending all weekend doing similar, and my arms already hurt.

The man who mistook his life for a FAP (Trayce), Friday, 3 June 2011 05:39 (fourteen years ago)

i should probably continue the sorting out of shit i don't want to move again that i started valiantly and didn't get far through

hey mongs

sorry that I have been a jerk of late and especially for "cuntgate"

for it is I, who has been the cunt, due to my love of self-pity and self-loathing that once I have had enough of self-hate, I direct that hate at undeserving targets like the general mong population (especially kit)

i'm so sorry for being a horrible dude because you are terrific people and good friends (even through I understand that you might not want to be the latter anymore

Saw Biz Markie (Thurs night but still) (with El-Adrel btw) (had to run away from end of triv to make this - ed how did we do?), Falling Joys reunion (with Clouds on BVs!), made a lamb roast stuffed with slivers of chilli and garlic, paid $15 for a 15 bands/15 bucks show just to see the first band and then left (a mate’s brother and two other teachers from his school doing instrumental classic rock covers), bought an expensive bookcase to fit in the annoying alcove in the room I’ve been living in since Feb 2010, took a carful of a mate who’s going OS for 11 month’s stuff to put under the stairs, saw Hangover 2: The Hangoverining, fixed the vertical blinds in the breakfast room and bathroom, ate a tasty Lebanese platter, went to see Neil Finn’s new band with his wife on bass and the pastry chef from the Grates on drums.

No way I’m giving money to Hunt’s bogus W0nder S+uff, and I would only want to see Inf0 Freak0 by the JJ’s. I know what their bassist looked like 10 years ago though, saw him in Jon Mekon’s country band at a dinner club.

Bloompsday (Trayce), Friday, 17 June 2011 00:32 (fourteen years ago)

Ratcat is on 12 mins walk from my house.

they've been back together for a little while iirc?

split with no fanfare in '97*, reformed in '98 with a new lineup that has stayed consistent ever since**

*ie iirc they hadn't played for a while and a recorded-years-earlier album finally limped onto the market

**ie recorded JPY cover/duet for movie soundtrack, did triumphant return tour, have happily played every now and then*** since with no plans to be an active band making new records

*** although this is the first in five years (micro-tour in June 2006), and is specifically a one-off for the 20th anniversary of being #1 in the singles and albums chart at the same time - they're playing everything off Blind Love and Tingles

I wonder what Sidewinder are up to these days, haw.

Craft will presumably be in Pulp when they come here next month, as he's been in Jarvis' band the last few years and Russell isn't flying.

no plans to be an active band making new records****

**** Day always has at least one current band on the go for new songs, but seems 102% happy dayjobbing and not aiming to make any $ out of music

Craft will presumably be

That's Craft, M.: no idea about his brother, but Pip Bran5on obv has his own band, is AFAIK a live member of Something For Kate, and runs the burlesque nights at 34B above Sp3ctrum; Melder is still in the P0laroids with Da\/e McCormack, got up for the last song or two of the Hummingb1rds reunion, to mirror his original tenure in the band, and probably plays with half a dozen other people around town as usual.

Faustina Agolley's statement:

For those who have sent messages of support, suggesting how horrible this situation is, I appreciate your words of kindness, it is sad for the show and the viewers, I’m not sad about this job that I love coming to an end. With my perspective, this is nothing compared to some of the stuff I have had to deal with in my personal life.

As for my future, I relish in the unknown, I appreciate the job offers that have already come my way, I have ideas as to where I want to continue to work, hopefully something more cerebral… Where i dont say ‘dude’ out of habit every few minutes, an Australian production or overseas, who knows?

that coles is a disaster at the best of times, the self-serve queues are long because ALL the queues are long and it always takes five billion years to get served

½ Louise Mensch (Schlafsack), Monday, 25 July 2011 23:38 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah the Crikey counterpoint is key (soz I was on the train in or i'dve chimed in earlier). Dont forget, you're effectibvely upgrading from shitty 100 year old copper network to a brand new, solid fibre one.

Who would begrudge a little more money to have thrice the speed (dont forget the ipload speed jumps MASSIVELY and you WILL notice a diff as a result), it inc phonecalls, you dont ever run into the prob of having to work out if its a phone line fault or an internet fault, or "the exchange has no DSL ports left", or "no you cant do a churn" or any of that shit Telstra now have a strangelhold on. Right now, fixing problems on wholesale telstra DSL copper is IMPOSSIBLE its like a fucking Kafka novel, I swear to you.

Thinking of getting a job at NBN tbh.

Bloompsday (Trayce), Monday, 25 July 2011 23:39 (fourteen years ago)

perhaps i have a good provider or something, but i do not feel i would get twice the value for twice the price. getting my mp3s thirty seconds quicker is not exactly a huge drawcard.

Who? Well, I've never heard of Mogwai. (electricsound), Monday, 25 July 2011 23:42 (fourteen years ago)

Also, the reason those prices are so high now is because NBNco is charging the ISPs in the trial a starter of $20 PER MEG PER USER to the 121 national "connection points" - just to CONNECT THEM TO THE NETWORK.

To quote Simon Hackett of Internode:

"Each 200 megabit CVC will cost 200 x $20 = $4000 per month (at wholesale, plus GST) to connect (for an effective rate of almost half a million dollars per month for an RSP connected to all 121 points of interconnect) – before a single paying customer is connected."

If Interode say this prices them out of the market, THIS IS FUCKED UP.

Bloompsday (Trayce), Monday, 25 July 2011 23:42 (fourteen years ago)

maybe if i was still a porn hound it would be more appealing

Who? Well, I've never heard of Mogwai. (electricsound), Monday, 25 July 2011 23:43 (fourteen years ago)

Also this isnt just about home users and their mp3s, this is about schools, hospitals, pharmacies, office VPNs, VOIP services, television/movie content delivery.

Bloompsday (Trayce), Monday, 25 July 2011 23:53 (fourteen years ago)

Jim: you may not have a choice, if the NBN means they dismantle the copper network ;P

But hey theres always cable.

Bloompsday (Trayce), Monday, 25 July 2011 23:54 (fourteen years ago)

i'm not even sure what you people are arguing. "it's not that expensive really, plus you are going to end up paying more anyway"?

Who? Well, I've never heard of Mogwai. (electricsound), Monday, 25 July 2011 23:57 (fourteen years ago)

That isnt what I'm arguing at all. The whole point of this is a base infrastructure rebuild that is desperately neccesary. Arguing otherwise is like saying "I dont want to pay more, I dont care that my electricity goes off for a few hours every day, its CHEAP"

Bloompsday (Trayce), Monday, 25 July 2011 23:58 (fourteen years ago)

Certainly there should remain options of affordability for those who just want the basics like a phone line (esp if they dont want DSL at all).

'laying cable'

Omega-3 fatty acid house (haitch), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 00:04 (fourteen years ago)

Once the NBN is in and settled I doubt it'll be at those prices.

I also get jim's point. Internet service is the sort of thing you only notice when it goes wrong (like everything in IT). If you're on a 512k plan and only read email you won't understand how 100Mbps could possibly make a difference. Of course, that all comes undone in 2013 when you buy an itunes capable telly that takes 14 hours to stream the latest episode of All Saints: The Next Generation.

½ Louise Mensch (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 00:06 (fourteen years ago)

yes that will be fun

Who? Well, I've never heard of Mogwai. (electricsound), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 00:07 (fourteen years ago)

In 2011 there are very few inner-city people who need 100 Mbps (or would even notice the difference). There is a problem when you get out to the suburban fringe and country towns where ADSL is basically pointless, and also those new housing estates where a deal was done with one company to lay a bare-minimum infrastructure and the best you can hope for is 700 kbps on a good day.

It's all right for us, we live farting distance from the local DSLAM and routinely get 21 Mbps. The NBN will make bugger-all difference to us for the foreseeable future.

½ Louise Mensch (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 00:09 (fourteen years ago)

btw apologies if I have the measurements muddled, I'm a bit Coonan in that respect.

Did u kno that originally the dept of foreign affairs was gonna be the dept of foriegn affairs, resources and trade? =) Trufax.

Bloompsday (Trayce), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 00:14 (fourteen years ago)

Also Adam is otm in a sense, tho there is debate as to wether the NBN as currently planned will help rural ppl much - if you're far enough out yr told yr solution is wireless or satellite. Which is the case now, so ffs whats the point. (also satellite is shithouse)

Bloompsday (Trayce), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 00:15 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah that sucks megadong. All those anti-NBN munters who think LTE is the magic cheap alternative to fibre need to understand how rubbish the air is as a data transfer medium.

½ Louise Mensch (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 00:18 (fourteen years ago)

"oh but they'd upgrade wireless if we all had to use it" YEAH RIGHT.
(actually I believe its impossible by laws of wavelength physics or something but I am not a radio scientist so I dunno)

Bloompsday (Trayce), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 00:20 (fourteen years ago)

They also argue that mobile phones are all 3G and do fast speeds right now. That's great if you're standing within 50m of your nearest cell, if that cell isn't congested to fuck (my local Telstra 850 cells at work have been maxed out for months) and if you're lucky enough to live within a solid coverage area. I've lost count of the number of people I know who bought a two year Optus/Voda wireless internet contract, got it home and had to hold their laptop above their head just to get a signal.

And yeah, too many people are being cut out of the NBN due to the expense of getting it out there. I can see e.g. indigenous communities being cut out because they're remote (which will just add to their disadvantage). I'd be more than happy to pay extra tax so that a few hundred thousand people had access to the same opportunities as the rest of us.

½ Louise Mensch (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 00:24 (fourteen years ago)

Sorry, I get angry about this. Internet is like gas and water these days, and it makes me angry to see people being cut out for commercial reasons.

½ Louise Mensch (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 00:25 (fourteen years ago)

Bloompsday (Trayce), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 00:30 (fourteen years ago)

aww

fwiw Germany has a much bigger population, a much smaller surface area and far better access to those massive service cables (like the ones that come to us under the sea, can't remember what they're called) so it's reasonable to expect better surfstick coverage in any given urban location imo. Also lol "surfstick".

Last week our noisy downstairs neighbours complained about us walking. WALKING. WITHOUT SHOES. This week they had some big fuck-off dinner party until 11pm so I went down (feverish at that point) and tore them a new arsehole.

ceci n'est pas une witty dn (Schlafsack), Friday, 5 August 2011 05:30 (fourteen years ago)

My snooty neighbs used to complain about rob's guitar noodling but now they've had a baby so they're all contrite and paranoid. which I should be milking for all its worth to make them feel bad but tbh I'm so deaf I dont even hear the damn baby.

Fucked if we're going to mute ourselves silly with all their racket going on.

Remember when you chucked out all those industrial early 80's cassettes that now trade for over $100?"

Rameses Street (Trayce), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 03:22 (fourteen years ago)

We're going next year AND WE'RE TAKING BINGO CARDS. All suggestions eagerly welcomed.

ceci n'est pas une witty dn (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 03:24 (fourteen years ago)

Wil Anderson has an anecdote (I presume it's based on truth) that goes like this:

American: "I like your accent!"
Wil: "Thanks! I like your accent too!"
American: "I don't have an accent"

ceci n'est pas une witty dn (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 03:26 (fourteen years ago)

Haaa.

Bingo card sugs:
"you speak english really well"
"do they show [insert current US tv show here] with subtitles over there?"
"are there really kangaroos hopping down the street" (tbh I'm p sure no one thinks that anymore but who the fuckknose)
"Melbourne? Oh, you're from Florida eh?"

Rameses Street (Trayce), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 03:35 (fourteen years ago)

"here I got you some Fosters so you don't feel homesick"

Rameses Street (Trayce), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 03:36 (fourteen years ago)

Circlesquare was a non-LP single (with an exclusive B-Side that was basically a ramalama re-write of the Garry Shandling/Sean's Show theme).

generous loller at dollies (sic), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 03:37 (fourteen years ago)

Yeha but the thing I had, it wasnt Circlesuquare that was the single, I think it was caught in my shadow. It was an EP with 4 or 5 tracks.

Rameses Street (Trayce), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 03:44 (fourteen years ago)

agh too many talk

Trayce: Awesome, I'll drop them in the pot

WS: I had an ep called "Welcome to the Cheap Seats" which was released alongside the film of the same name. Really great at the time, don't think I could stand it now. Had a nice cover of That's Entertainment.

Shriekback Outhouse: Went to one of those in HK a couple of years ago, WEIRD experience.

Rameses Street (Trayce), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 03:45 (fourteen years ago)

OMG neds atomic dustbin. Jesus. Around that time (91?) I was in a band and we called ourselves the Mountain Eaters, figureing if the Neds could steal from the Goon show then so could we.

Rameses Street (Trayce), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 03:47 (fourteen years ago)

We lasted one rehearsal, til the guitarist insisted he wanted to do a cover of a Midnight Oil song and we all said "gtfo"

Rameses Street (Trayce), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 03:47 (fourteen years ago)

the That's Entertainment EP was infuriating in Australia bcz they only released one of the two discs (albeit in a card sleeve for $1.95). Took until ten years later before I got to hear the second EP's tracks on an imported 2CD of b-sides that came out when they reformed, by which time I cared much much less indeed.
