i went to a spank party last weekend. it was nice, i danced a little and talked a little. i went by myself. spank is a zine. i like to go to their parties by myself bc they are typically loft parties and they usually have roof access. makes it easy to mingle. "need a cigarette?"

I made a fresh summer pasta for my friend last night who pretty much exclusively buys frozen junk food and lunch meat (and then complains that he's always strapped for cash, go figure). It was a really simple rotini with broccoli, sliced garlic, diced roma tomatoes, fresh basil and lots of olive oil. Everyone was all OMG SOOOOO GOOD and I was just like "yeah dude, fresh ingredients + minimal effort = tasty meal"

i have a 0% success rate with pancakes over my entire life to date :(

Oh, they're just different tastes entirely. Basil has a slightly licorice-y flavor and is found in a great deal of Italian cooking... sage is, I guess a bit more earthy? And it's often found in sausage; a lot of people link the taste to that. Generally speaking though, fresh herbs taste, well, fresher and brighter and more robust and stuff.

i add fresh parsley to a lot of things for flavor. salads, chicken dishes, pastas, whatever. it is a wonderfully fresh, green and bright flavor.

Oh well true, but in those things parsley is one of the major flavor components. I was thinking something more like a tomato sauce. It's a pretty delicate flavor and something like tons of tomato/garlic/other herbs is going to totally overpower it.

fresh rosemary is very strong and nice. sage and basil are also strong. parsley can be nice when u don't want something so specific.

i don't usually add it to pasta sauce

favorite super low-budget and easy-peasy to make tomato sauce that is seriously really delicious:

1 can whole tomatoes
1 med onion, chopped in half
five pats of butter

put all ingredients in pot, boil then let simmer for 45 mins (break up tomatoes while cooking), turn off heat, discard onion, and serve. no herbs necessary!

- Fage greek yogurt with granola for breakfast
- veggie burger with hummus and tons of veggies on california complete protein bread for lunch
- chicken (or some other meat) with vegetables and quinoa for dinner

- one protein shake

Our laws are weird - most bars close at 2, but some close at 4, except on Saturday nights/Sunday mornings, when they close at 3 and 5, respectively.

What's dumb tho is that last call is unpredictable. And bars with clocks on the wall invariably set them ahead by 10-20 minutes. Plus "last call" often means "no more drinks."

I liked NC's law: last call 5 minutes before 2:00, no service at 2:00, and you surrender any leftovers at 2:30 and the bright lights come up and you GTFO. Very clear and orderly.

No gay pride here for a good while, but this Friday it's Quebecois pride (essentially). Fete nationale (the 'national' holiday of Quebec) is celebrated on St. Jean Baptiste Day (June 24th), so there will be parades and music and lots of blue and white. And possibly Fireworks.

Celebrating early means that we can treat Canada Day (July 1st, the national holiday for the rest of the country) as the semi-official province-wide moving day.

In Montréal it's basically Pride every weekend of the summer, what with the Village being closed to traffic and with Piknic Electronic on the island.

speaking of the French, i watched Téchine's <Les Roseaux Sauvages> last night, and both Gael Morel and Stephane Rideau (of Come Undone fame, among others) are both so handsome. and it's one of the better 'coming-of-age' movies i've seen.

Rideau is a fox in the Adonis sense, but Morel is just...i don't know, there's something about his face (even now, in his 'older age') that i find very very handsome. lips, mayhaps.

Wild Reeds is one of my favorite movies. The last five minutes tear me up.

Rideau finally got a few hawt man-fuck scenes in the terrible Come Undone (his boyfriend is rawr too).

glad i've never seen Come Undone, but man, Wild Reeds.

that's crazy, I just watched "Les Roseaux Sauvages" and made the "ex" watch it too this past weekend- it's a movie that affects me to the point that watching it is now something like a masochistic act of pleasure- I get plunged right back into really intense feelings of desire, frustration, pain etc. but it's cathartic too through its sheer beauty and pacing. You'd never think that closing with Del Shannon's "Runaway" could work but when that kicks in, I'm a wreck.

I"m gushing here but that movie makes me weak- the smoldering early seduction scenes of Rideau and Morel checking each other out (the hands down the pants to grab the paper!), the super heartbreak of everyone's mutual disconnect, oh man. I think Elodie Bouchez as Maite is the real standout star of the movie though, her slowdance with Francois at that party scene is so well acted. She sees a bit more than the other characters, she's neither as elitist and selfcentered as Francois nor as willfully meatheaded as Serge.

drew, i totally get the feeling wrecked part. the last 20 minutes or so had me alternately tearing up and smiling so hard my face hurt. Bouchez is the real stand-out, her hysterical crying and kissing at the end REALLY got to me.

The best gay youth story remains Edge of Seventeen. Saw it recently and it still holds up.

Gawdawful flick. Hate Beautiful Thing too. But love Come Undone so...

Get Real sucked. EOS boasts a convincing midwestern milieu, a lovely performance by the kid's mom, and captures the rush of a young gay guy suddenly realizing he can Be Himself on the dance floor.

Maybe I'll just go with Brokeback after all. Coming out stories are a dime a dozen. An Oscar-nominated one is something else.

I can swallow Get Real but one major problem with sooooo many gay films is their (mis)treatment of secondary (usually female) characters. Re: Edge of Seventeen, I hated the arch motherly instincts of Lea Delaria and the revoltingly tragic denizens of her nightclub. Great use of Evelyn Thomas’ “High Energy,” though.

The Pirate is pretty funkin' gay. The Gang's All Here is probably the gayest classical Hollywood musical.

Steven Cohan's Incongruous Entertainment: Camp, Cultural Value, and the MGM Musical is indispensable here. Remarkable book that dives into (amongst other things) the queer labor behind the MGM musical.

I love the breadth of movies that can be tagged "gay," though I never grew up wanting to be Franklin Pangborn.

That waiter miming out the making of a caesar salad in Easter Parade is maybe one of the gayest things I think all our grandparents ever saw.

Story of Bad Boy - one of my fave coming of age/out flicks; quirky; supremely brainy script; excellent performances by Stephen Lang and Julie Kavner (Marge Simpson!) as the flummozed parents. Torrentable.
