laura robson would be a terrific player if she only learned to move her feet - so slow! particularly right after she hits her (very good) forehand, she's rooted to the ground abt a quarter of a second longer than is necessary.

did well to overcome a choking bout (allowed kerber to get back on serve after being up 4-0 in the third) today though.

what worries me about Robson is how little improvement she seems to have made over the past TWO years. she's a really, really amazing shotmaker, but as you say her movement isn't even a weakness, it's inadequate at the pro level unless you're going to be 95% accurate with your high-risk shots or have Davenport-level strokes. and Laura is not reliably accurate sadly, so often Kerber would get one extra ball back and Laura would smack it out/in the net almost out of petulance. and her attitude is really negative.

Yeah I was gonna say - these two matches have been a terrific showcase for women's tennis, not just in terms of the high quality of play and contrast in styles, but also of the global, egalitarian nature of the sport. I mean, in just those two matches, we had two slam winners, a veteran, and a young up-and-comer, a European, an African-American and two Asian players. Just so great.

I got to the queue much later than usual because helpfully the District line was doing between Earls Court and Wimbledon because of signal failure or whatever. Well DONE all involved. Is it too much to ask TFL to actually work when it should.

When I got in we ended up watching Paszek/McHale first (soooo many queues around the other courts, had been hoping for Schiavone/BZS on Court 3 but that wasn't gonna happen). Ended up sitting next to Paszek's coach and dad, their constant barks of AUF MIMI were a bit disturbing.

I first saw Paszek play a couple of courts over from where she was today back in 2007, and was blown away by her then. In fact I just went back to the relevant thread and here is what I wrote!

Then over the alleyway to Paszek and Barbora. Paszek is amazing, really fired up and immense off both wings - could stand to lose a little puppy fat though. Barbora was actually playing OK, a nice all-court game, her tantrums were fun though - after one missed volley she sank to her knees and - I believe she was addressing the net here - let out this stream of plaintive Czech which lasted for about two minutes, complete with drama queen head shaking and arm waving. Future career as Shakespearian tragic heroine beckons. Paszek meanwhile will probably lay a beatdown on Tati in the next round - and she seems like the kind of girl who LOVES to give beatdowns.

It's...kinda sad to see the same player four years on look so ordinary. I mean, you can tell from the scoreline, she had too much clout for McHale - who was way more aggressive than I expected her to be, and who should probably work at integrating net play into her game cuz her volleys were mostly excellent, but who was essentially too underpowered. Paszek looked decent but there was absolutely nothing left of the supernova kid who looked like she had a potentially elite game. She just looked like any old solid top 100 baseliner, little creativity and few wow shots.

Last set of Silliams/Halep on the big screen. Serena is playing better and better, looking like she's regaining a lot of her power already. Halep, as per every time I've seen her, is terrible and utterly weapinless, and the fact that she is considered a promising up-and-comer bodes terribly for the WTA.

Tanasugarn/Kirilenko was such an aggravating match. Kirilenko is just the most annoying Sharapova wannabe and her grunt is heinous - as loud as Sharapova except Sharapova at least has the decency to hit massive groundstrokes with her noises - Kirilenko goes HUUGHHH-UGHHHHH like she's putting her entire effort into it, but what you get are pathetic mid-court fluffballs. Tanasugarn of just a few years ago would have eaten her for breakfast but she's just too old and slow and erratic now (and whatever problem she took a medical time-out for wasn't helping). On the rare point when Tanasugarn was in full flow, though, the whooshing sound of her racquet connecting to the ball was just so pure and clean.

Rain! Not much. We gossiped with a friend who works in tennis. Petkovic is a sweetheart IRL and Azarenka is a massive bitch. No surprises there.

Tursunov/Melzer. I didn't go in with a rooting interest, in fact I thought I preferred Dima slightly more (sexier) (they are both sexy) (why do you think we attended this match). Melzer totally won the crowd over though with a ton of amazing setpiece/touch points - he basically won every "highlights reel" point there was, especially his run after another rain break at 2-2 to the end of the first set.

The weird thing about the second set is that Melzer still played a bunch of great points and didn't exactly fall apart, but just missed a few at inopportune moments, Tursunov started returning really well and all of a sudden Melzer was down 0-4 (and the set quickly followed).

Melzer was broken in the third thanks in large part to a lucky netcord, and he gave us our first IRL tantrum of Wimbledon (but couldn't even smash his racquet properly, smh). He STILL looked like the better player though, even though Tursunov was hardly playing badly, and the crowd had wound up pretty pro-Melzer. Luckily for them, Tursunov had a severe bout of Women's Tennis when it came to serving out the set, culminating in a horrible double fault. From there to the end of the set the tennis was superb from both - though Melzer was the deserving winner of the TB.

Went for a wander on our way to the exit after that (it had been an unusually sedentary day, caught Petkorazzi and Ivanovic wrapping up their doubles against Craybas and Chang. They did the Petkodance afterwards! Then we got swamped by Ivanovic fanboys, ugh. I had to make it clear out loud that I'd only been watching for Petkovic. The perv fans are the WORST :(

Sighted wandering around: Richard Williams looking for his way into Court 2 for Serena's match. Really thin legs, I'd never noticed before. Later on, Ayumi Morita in pink hotpants.

The new Court 3...I'm not sure it's good for grounds pass holders. Part of the joy of a grounds pass is wandering from match to match and NOT queueing all the time - and all that one more show court means is one more court with massive queues attached if you want to get in (and once in you then have to stay there to keep your seats). And it draws away a lot of the matches that you could have otherwise just wandered up to. I miss the old Court 6, it was so tranquil and tucked away :(

Tsonga-Dimitrov was really great tennis at the end, just balls-out tennis and incredible shot-making. Really interested to see how Harrison comes out tomorrow against Ferrer, but regardless it's nice to see some young kids playing good ball

meanwhile and so far unmentioned, Bernie the FOAT locked in battle 2-1 down v one Igor Andreev, who I remember was moderately good for most of the first week at the Oz Open, the one when Safin beat Rodge in the semi and Lleyton in the final. The fact that a) Lleyts was a real chance of winning and b) Marat still had his marbles, shows you what kind of previous tennis epoch we're talking.

Now I hate to carp, and the boy is still but young, but if Tomic is set to ever be as good as they're hoping, surely he shouldn't be having such trouble beating people who were 'moderately good' for ten minutes about six Presidents ago? Just putting it out there....

Agree that he's way past his best and was never effective on grass anyway, but from what I saw of Tomic in Australia, he still has a ton of growing to do physically.
