A few weeks to go so I thought I'd get this started

Yes, Ed! Was counting on you as a known fellow enthusiast to open this one! :-)

The route

...wow! (Le Bateau Ivre), Saturday, 18 June 2011 23:22 (fourteen years ago)

Ok, so contador may run away with this, he looked so good at the giro. I'm super pissed that the CAS hasn't adjudicated. Sure he can be beaten but I wouldn't want to bet against it.

Andy schleck, I have no clue what kind of form he is in. He's barely done anything all year. He could be coming to an impressive peak.

Sastre and basso, I don't think they are going to feature much.

Wiggins looked good in the dauphine but I still don't think he can do better than 4th. I hope I'm wrong. A strong showing in the ttt could help.

Evans, also looked pretty good in the dauphine and cunego is going well in Suisse (is he riding the tour)

Looking forward to seeing what gilbert will do; will he go for stage wins or gc?

Peter Sagan has future green jersey winner written all over him. No sure if he is riding.

Cavedish, not sure if the new points rules helps or hinders him from being a green jersey contender.

More as I think of it.

The new points system seems like its really going to shake things up. There are going to be much bigger names in the breaks, if breaks can even get away. It's going to be an interesting dynamic.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Saturday, 18 June 2011 23:38 (fourteen years ago)

Don't disagree with you, steve.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Saturday, 18 June 2011 23:39 (fourteen years ago)

I too think Contador will walk this. But then, it's the Tour, big surprises are nearly integral. I think Andy Schleck has been more involved in getting the new team started up than actually performing, but I have no doubt he'll be ready for it. Agree on Sastre and Basso, I don't think they'll feature much.

I wasn't that impressed with Wiggins in the Dauphiné to be honest. Because he lead the race for quite a while he resigned to consolidating his position, so I didn't see him in full-on combat in some of the mighty mountain stages. I do believe he's out-grown the 'clinging-on' stage, but I don't know if he can make or break the race. Same goes for Evans, a tough cookie, but who I have little sympathy for tbh. But I don't know where he stands this season.

Don't rule out Rabobank's Robert Gesink though. He's had a good season with a good build-up to form, did well in the Dauphiné. First time he gets to head the team, with Menchov gone, and he's got a couple of great, new helpers for the climbing stages. He's gunning for a place on the podium. He won't win it but will be a serious contender, especially when ripping through the Alps.

Finishing on the Galibier and Alpe d'Huez in two consecutive days is fantastic; taking time off from work to see those two!

...wow! (Le Bateau Ivre), Saturday, 18 June 2011 23:46 (fourteen years ago)

New points system? For the green jersey, or all of them?

The Green is up for the taking for Cavendish I think, there's still hardly any competition, really.

...wow! (Le Bateau Ivre), Saturday, 18 June 2011 23:47 (fourteen years ago)

Sanchez is a force to be reckoned with, I agree

...wow! (Le Bateau Ivre), Saturday, 18 June 2011 23:48 (fourteen years ago)

Sastre and basso, I don't think they are going to feature much.

― American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Saturday, June 18, 2011 4:29 PM (24 minutes ago)

I don't figure Sastre to figure much either considering his team was not invited to Le Tour (also: Menchov)!!! Meanwhile Vacansoleil (dopers anonymous?) get an invite.

it's a meme i made and i like (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 18 June 2011 23:55 (fourteen years ago)

Bit harsh to call Vacansoleil 'dopers anonymous' imho. It's more a case of stupidity than bad intentions with that team.

...wow! (Le Bateau Ivre), Saturday, 18 June 2011 23:59 (fourteen years ago)

only one intermediate sprint on flat stages, but a lot more points available. guess they want two big sprint finishes a day? good tv i suppose.
i do love a team time trial, although its a bit short & flat.

As poor as his form looks at times, I do believe he was the last clean TdF winner we'll have seen for many years +/- when it is all said and done.

First clean one since......Lemond?

Food Processors Are Grebt (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Sunday, 19 June 2011 13:35 (fourteen years ago)

i'm a go out on a limb: contador was going deep like a baby seal (RIP wrinklepaws) on some of those giro stages - big ask to hold form like that from start of may to end of july. i think he won't have it all his own way.

kinda want to see more line-ups before i start predictions!

the absolute würst (haitch), Sunday, 19 June 2011 14:44 (fourteen years ago)

Last two years I watched the Giro but not the Tour - was planning to reverse that this year, skipped the Giro - but my favorite rider was Xavi Tondó! Btwn his death and Contador's presence here I'm jaded.

Levi leipheimer looked good today. I feel like he and wiggins are in the same class, could be interesting.

oh shit i think this is a floyd landis quote, right?

so leipheimer arrives on time, hmm. any word on why he skipped the press conference?

danielson appears to be "super-motivated," fulfills primary mission of eliciting snickers. (tbc, i would enjoy seeing him prosper, but lord, if anyone ever has been hyped w/o arriving...)

He's not exactly sparkled the last couple of years.

Trying to work out which stages to hold TdF parties on. Last year we got the infamous chain incident. I feel like the 2nd two thursdays may offer the most, Tourmalet and Luz-Ardiden on the first, first go up the galbier on the second. 2nd and 3rd fridays have the Aubisque then Télégraphe, Galbier and Alp D'Huez. Middle saturday has 6 categorised climbs and looks brutal.

Hard decisions, I want to serve pastis and project cycling.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 22 June 2011 01:36 (thirteen years ago)

Also Issoioire> St Flour on the first* saturday promises to be the prettiest stage IMO.

*Not having a prologue is messing with me, this tour has 4 saturdays, so its really the second.

I think geraint Thomas gets White there.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Saturday, 2 July 2011 15:44 (thirteen years ago)

I'm not really sure who was were then. Wiggins appeared to be in the Contador group at the finish, but I think he'd made the cut originally. I couldn't work out if the second pile up (with about 2.5km to go) was at the back of the front group or was in the chasers - if the former, then maybe Wiggins was caught up in that and so ended up dropping back to Contador. Where were the Schlecks?

There is power in an onion (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 2 July 2011 15:46 (thirteen years ago)

Wiggins was ahead of he contador group by about 20 seconds. I think the schlecks were about 20 seconds down on on Gilbert.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Saturday, 2 July 2011 15:49 (thirteen years ago)

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Saturday, 2 July 2011 15:49 (thirteen years ago)

2nd crash was under 5km to go so they'll be relegated regardless. OTOH, time gaps due to the first crash will be significant.

If Wiggins was in the first group after the first crash, and if the second crash (which was within the last 3km) was in the first group and he was taken out by it, then presumably he gets given the same time as the leading bunch (i.e. 6 secs behind Gilbert), so will actually end up ahead of Contador even though he came in behind him

There is power in an onion (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 2 July 2011 16:04 (thirteen years ago)

Thor, yes, same time but Thor would get it in the count back. Geraint could be in with a shout too.

caek, Monday, 4 July 2011 22:32 (thirteen years ago)

i didn't think there was much of a foul either way. it was thor's wheel going into the left bend, and cav tried to poach it through the bend as gilbert changed his own line. if i were in that situation, i'd definitely fight to keep that wheel, and if i nearly lucked into it as cav did, i'd try to keep it too. just, i didn't think it was anything, really.

I thought his post-race interview was great. He seems like he genuinely respects the work his team does at all times, and enjoys the sprint game a lot. "That was proper hard"

sous les paves, Wednesday, 6 July 2011 15:42 (thirteen years ago)

Oh but I didn't mean him expressing the support and work of his team-mates.

What I was getting at is the "they are trying to put a handicap on me" schtick. He enjoys to put himself in the position, painting a picture that the whole world is against him. The Tour de France made this years finishes the way they did just to keep him from winning. It's getting old and it's not a good look.

it's a winning tactic though, look at the (this is taking a lot to write) success that Imperial Lord Ferg has had with exactly the same tactic. Creates a gang mentality, backs against the wall, all pulling together to fight off the hordes etc etc etc.

problem chimp (Porkpie), Wednesday, 6 July 2011 16:14 (thirteen years ago)

Rojas and Boonen both relegated due to both of them closing doors on fellow racers in the intermediate sprint. Race judges are being more harsh in the intermediates to ensure race safety.

Was I the only one surprised to see Cav's win by the skin of his uh.... teeth at the finish? I had written off HTC entirely at that point. Gilbert looks incredibly strong. He is amassing points with reckless abandon.

Meanwhile, Contador will attack again towards the end to scare the GC contenders.

I'm glad Wiggins won the Dauphine and the national championships, anyway. Last season they'd have told him to ease off in the Dauphine to save himself for the Tour and he didn't even bother with the nationals. If a win's there for the taking, go for it, because if you build your whole season around just one race then just one crash can lead to the whole season being a write off.

Of course, Vino's decided today's the day for him to re-announce his bastardness, too. Cadel and the BMCs trying to reel him back, cos at this rate he's in yellow. Teej and the front group have decided to start attacking each other.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 9 July 2011 14:42 (thirteen years ago)

NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 9 July 2011 16:03 (thirteen years ago)

I think at that point you have to give Thor and Garmin credit. Cadel has mentioned patience, that his goal is to be in Yellow at the end than at the beginning. The parcours will start tilting a bit steeper from here on out.

it's a meme i made and i like (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 9 July 2011 16:45 (thirteen years ago)

Garvelo haven't really put a foot wrong so far. Both Thor and Millar in the top ten is testament to that. Individually they are both climbing better that ever before. They aren't gc contenders but I'm starting to think a top 20 might be a possibility for either of them, I'm thinking they are now grupetto rather than autobus riders. That and a good TT might be enough for 18th or 19th with a start like this. (might be out on a crazy limb here).

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Saturday, 9 July 2011 17:01 (thirteen years ago)

To be honest I'd expect Hushovd to suddenly lose at least 20 minutes on one day once they get to the real mountains. As for Millar, I think he's theoretically capable of getting 19th place, but that's unlikely to be his focus. He might well be working for Vandevelde (sp?) - delivering him a third of the way up the big climb and then peeling off; or he might well decide to take it easy on a couple of mountain stages so that he can concentrate on trying to win the time trial.

There is power in an onion (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 9 July 2011 17:28 (thirteen years ago)

Ryder Hesjedal was top 10 last year (7th?), he'll either be working with or for CVdV and Tommy D at this point. They are a very dynamic team, definitely eyeing the top 10 or maybe a top 5.

millarmind David Millar
I was 4 riders behind Thor 400m from finish, tried to get to him to help as he engaged warp-drive. It was awesome to behold. Hammer time.

I thought Hesjedal was about 5th last year? I vaguely recall him having two monstrous stages - one through the dust on the cobbles, the other bursting out of the fog on one of the most horrendous mountains, possibly the one where Contador and Schleck were going blow-for-blow.

Sherwen using 'summit' as a verb there, marvellous.

William Bloody Swygart, Sunday, 10 July 2011 14:29 (thirteen years ago)

that's very common usage around here.

liggett talking about the emergency room at the nearest hospital. that could be a pretty weird scene, with like 5 riders chilling out on adjacent beds waiting for results and shit.

Tour-director Christain Prudhomme just said on Dutch tv that it was a scandal. He personally ordered the car to get out of the way (because Voeckler's team boss needed to pass to bring him a drink), and they (the TF1 technicians) refused. They'll be thrown out of the tour and Prudhomme said he will take tomorrow to think about further repercussions.

Asamoah Nyan (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 10 July 2011 17:23 (thirteen years ago)

well, did they refuse to pass because there were trees practically in the road and it was dangerous, because that would be a scandal for prudhomme, really

Hi all, this is the driver of the french television car. I am truly sorry for my actions which were responsible for the crash of Flecha and Hoogerland. I have now been terminated from my job and have received a formal warning for my actions. This means that I will never be able to drive during the event of the tour again and I have lost points on my driving licence. I wish a quick recovery to Hoogerland and Flecha. Once again, I deeply regret my actions today and I ask for your forgiveness."

->

"Johnny_Hoogerland 5 hours ago
Hi people, its Hoogerland here, thank you all for the support. It is really a shock to see the actions of the driver. I can imagine they're in regret and shock too for their actions. I am glad to have finished the stage with my life in my hands. I spoke to Flecha after the stage and he seem to be in good condition, but we as pro cyclists must get up and fight on, that's why its the toughest sport in the world. I wish this incident did not happen, but there are somethings that cannot be avoided.
I am happy to have polka dot jersey now, the hardwork has paid off...going to spend rest day in lot of pain. Abandoning race is last on my mind. Thank you all for wonderful support."

Gilbert is cool, been a breath of fresh air in this tour by just going put and bloody racing for sobbing out loud. The bert and Andy show is boring and self neutralising, cadel is cadel (still a dull wheelsucker IMO), brad was a time trialler with a bit of race .... But PG is a racer through and through, and it's exciting. 2 hopes = that he can do something in the mountains (doubtful) and that he's clean (soooo hope so)

Cavendish strikes again. Full of praise for Greipel at the finish (saying yesterday's sprint was technically perfect).

cav in green then?

Yup

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 13 July 2011 15:29 (thirteen years ago)

Does Cav's praise for Greipel strike anybody else as perhaps a (probably unconcious) diss, in a way? I.E. "He did a technically perfect sprint, which is the only way he (or anyone) could possibly beat me"

I reckon green will stay with Cav, but KOM will definitely change hands (though who to, I have no idea - it depends if there's a break - but possibly a Schleck). Agree with you about LLS taking the yellow.

There is power in an onion (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 13 July 2011 16:44 (thirteen years ago)

I wouldn't count Hoog out definitely! I'm rooting for him... it sucks he's in the KOM jersey as this is about the time he (and/or Voeckler!) normally launches a suicide break. Perhaps the other teams will let him get away out of sympathy?

Sammy Sanchez, just riding himself back into contention and the top ten here. Chapeau to Voeckler defending the yellow today.

I think that was the closest thing to an attack by Evans in all the years he's ridden the Tour.

This could be really interesting. Contador doesn't look all that this time round, whether that's due to crashes or post-Giro fatigue or a lack of steak. Andy Schleck seems to be suffering. Could Frank S or Evans or Basso actually win it?

There is power in an onion (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Thursday, 14 July 2011 18:57 (thirteen years ago)

I have a sneaking suspicion this is Evans' year. He's skulking along quite nicely.

Madchen, Thursday, 14 July 2011 19:07 (thirteen years ago)

The way I see it... Cadel and the Schlecks are virtually in a three way tie for yellow.
Basso and Cunego are about a minute behind them.
Sammy and Alberto are about 2 minutes behind them.

Strategically, you have two choices: you can either try to chip away at each stage or pick one or two stages to try to bury your competitors.

I would look for Sammy and Alberto to team up on stage 18(Galabier) and/or 19(Alpe d'Huez). A stronger attack deeper into the race could prove to be the most devestating.

Evans looked really good today, I'd be inclined to think he had a chance if he wasn't the same Cadel Evans who never ever attacks in the Tour and can be counted on to lose a couple of minutes here and there when the real climbers do their thing.

I still don't understand why the GC group wasn't concerned about Sanchez's attack. He was fourth last year and can ride a decent time trial, so why let him gain an extra minute without a fight? This could come back to haunt some people.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 14 July 2011 21:11 (thirteen years ago)

government d/n (cozen), Thursday, 14 July 2011 21:20 (thirteen years ago)

Sanchez started the day 5+ minutes down on Voeckler and I think around 4+ mins on Cadel/Schlecks. The best part was the Sanchez predicted his victory pre-race.

Other interesting fact for the day:

Frank Schleck climbed Luz Ardiden nearly 2 minutes slower than lance in 2003, and lance even managed to crash

that intermediate was more just cav being inattentive to the setup imo. if someone has a lane and overtakes you, well, you shouldve been in that lane first of you wanted to pass. you don't have a theoretical right to enter a passing lane when ppl are overtaking you. at least that's how ive always treated it. you're just fucked. being the kinda hardman that can "force" a lane is part of being an excellent leadout (or sprinter).

SS, speak to my level---i'm confused by thor, a heavy sprinter, going for it on a mountain stage.

g++ (gbx), Friday, 15 July 2011 13:57 (thirteen years ago)

Thor is not so much a pure sprinter (anymore), he'll lead out Farrar or Haussler, but if it's an uphill finish or there's some form of selection to be made at the end of the race, that's where he shines and can outpower the selection.

it's a meme i made and i like (Steve Shasta), Friday, 15 July 2011 13:57 (thirteen years ago)

Thor becomes more of a puncheur/barrodeur every year. He can't beat any of the big sprinters in a straight line any more so he has to go out in the break to get a win (or the green jersey a couple of years ago).

I watch cycling on Eurosport most of the rest of the year (for the classics, Giro, Dauphine, etc) and quite enjoy David Harmon rambling on with Sean Kelly, even though he frequently misses big moves and misidentifies the riders. But I watch the Tour de France on ITV4, not for the Liggett & Sherwen commentary (which is overly geared towards newcomers and the American market), but for the Gary Imlach and Ned Boulting bits.

There is power in an onion (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 15 July 2011 19:10 (thirteen years ago)

Harmon and Kelly are lovably dumb and harmless, but Liggett and Sherwen are much better at getting across the excitement of the race, especially when a potentially race changing moment happens (e.g. somebody attacks or is dropped).

not much of a return for all the effort that Leopard Trek have put in over the last couple of days. beginning to believe that Cadel has a chance!

zappi, Saturday, 16 July 2011 15:34 (thirteen years ago)

He definitely has a chance. The Schlecks aren't going get anywhere if they keep easing off ten seconds after they attack.

There is power in an onion (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 16 July 2011 15:41 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, what a disappointment that was. The Schlecks have to stop trying to mess with Contador's mind and start thinking about winning the Tour. At the rate they're going, they'll be dicking around all the way to Paris with Voeckler (who looked great again btw) still in yellow.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 16 July 2011 15:45 (thirteen years ago)

Getting the feeling main Eurosport guy may slightly have it in for Andy. He was begging Voeckler to have a go at 1km. "Go on! Round the outside, while he's looking for his brother!"

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 16 July 2011 15:46 (thirteen years ago)

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 16 July 2011 15:50 (thirteen years ago)

Several riders look good, but nobody looks unbeatable. Evans has arguably looked the most consistently strong - that (and the fact that Voekler has been able to hang on in there) suggests Wiggins would still be right up there in the top four now if he hadn't crashed out. How frustrating.

There is power in an onion (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 16 July 2011 16:01 (thirteen years ago)

Only 1'58" between cuddles and Voeckler in the ITT at the Dauphiné. I'm just mentioning that. Of course him holing onto that gap to Grenoble is ridiculous, isn't it?

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Saturday, 16 July 2011 19:52 (thirteen years ago)

Frank sulking about how only him and Andy and Basso attacked is possibly the first/only time someone has ever accused Tommy V of not being attacking enough.

This race has been hella fun (while simultaneously massively painful) so far - heroes all over the shop, and Gilbert, Thor and Tommy is probably the most popular trio of maillot jaunes in a while. Every rider that's got the big prize and held it has been due to really taking risks and attacking to hold onto it.

So obviously Contador is gonna jam it out on the ITT.

One thing we don't seem to have mentioned yet: Pierre Fucking Rolland is wingmanning like an utter hero for Voeckler. Aside from Team Venture, Europcar were the only team to have two riders in that lead pack today. Also, with all the talk about Wiggins - what'd be happening if JVDB was still in? The job Vanendert's done past couple of days suggests a double-team of the OPL lads could have done some heavy damage in the hills.

Yeah, that was impressive. Also, who is Kevin de Weert? I've never noticed him before, in fact haven't noticed him in this race, and yet somehow he's sitting in tenth place.

Also, with all the talk about Wiggins - what'd be happening if JVDB was still in? The job Vanendert's done past couple of days suggests a double-team of the OPL lads could have done some heavy damage in the hills.

Yup, this is equally true and unfortunate. It's worth mentioning that Uran Uran was still up there yesterday so that's a pair of (half ghostly) Sky riders and to go with the pair of (half ghostly) Omega-Pharma-Lotto boys in this fantasy version of the Tour. I don't think Wiggins would have a chance of going with Contador at his best, but this isn't Contador at his best (for whatever reason) and it seems his 'best' may well have been steak-aided. Andy Schleck has got the ability, but seems to be tactically inept.

It seems that people’s heroes aren’t they guys that win the grad tours. Look at the heroes of this Tour de France: Gilbert, Voigt, Ten Dam, Hushovd, Flecha, Hoogerland and most of all Thomas Voeckler. A barrodeur who went out on what many thought was a standard suicide break, got the golden fleece and against all odds has kept it. He has kept it whilst the big names have whinged that other big names won’t attack.

Ed OTM

and also as a guy with a Need For Speed i would LOVE to see races won on the downhill!!!

g++ (gbx), Tuesday, 19 July 2011 20:03 (thirteen years ago)

sooooo...lemme see if i've got this right

tomorrow's big climb is like 60km from the end, followed by 50km of descending. none of the GC guys will go for it, because any gaps opened up on the climb are too easily closed on the descent unless they're really, really big, right?

it would seem, then, that this could favor a puncheur like Thor? again?

long flat run-up might see a breakaway go unchased because the GC guys are saving it for 18/19, and since Thor isn't even going for green, he's probably not concerned about saving his gas for the champs-elysees...maybe?

i'm trying to learn about bike racing

Gaps are most easily closed on long straight, windless flats.

it would seem, then, that this could favor a puncheur like Thor? again?

Haha, I wouldn't call Hushovd a puncheur (he climbs and sprints steadily) but it would favor a breakaway artist like Vino had he still been in the race. The descent tomorrow in Pinerolo will be equally tricky as today's, but probably drier. I'd look for someone like Levi or an Italian who is out of GC contention to take the stage. Sammy Sanchez is the best descender of the remaining 7 in contention but he'll be on a short leash. I imagine Contador will wait until Thurs/Friday before taking the reins again, unless he sees real weakness out of the Bros. Schleck and Voekler and decides to finally bury them. Cadel will race smart and respond wisely to anything threatening, it's his race to lose now. Gilbert may want to see the Green Jersey again but I think the remainder of the tour is ill-suited for his efforts.

long flat run-up might see a breakaway go unchased because the GC guys are saving it for 18/19, and since Thor isn't even going for green, he's probably not concerned about saving his gas for the champs-elysees...maybe?

Thor will be gassed after today and will roll in with the grupetto or possibly briefly work for Tommy D. who is hanging on to 10th but may be looking for a top 7? Look for an Italian to claim victory on their home turf or for someone who has had a disappointing tour to seek redemption (Levi).

which italians could win this, though??? would cunego or basso be allowed a run at it just because they won't have a chance over galibier/d'huez if they're allowed to gas it at home? like, sacrifice their slim chances at the GC in exchange for a stage win?

Basso and Cunego could never make the break because they're too high up on GC. Any Italians in the service of any of the GC favorites like BMC's Manuel Quinziato also have loftier goals. Maybe a Lampre, AG2R or Vacansoleil guy?

I don't know his name, but the guy who wasn't Mollema and was in the duo chasing EBH over the hill was the worst descender ever: almost off round one bend with his foot down to save him, crashing off into the forest about 20 seconds later on another bend, and then zooming into someone's driveway a bit later (the same one that Voekler ended up in). 'Hat!' to Contador for his descending attack today (even though he shouldn't be in the race).

g++ (gbx), Thursday, 21 July 2011 14:18 (thirteen years ago)

Iglinsky up front, who's got 1m50 on Andy Schleck w/ teammate Monfort and two others. Andy has got 2m40 on the groupe Maillot Jaune, which consists of Evans, Voeckler and Contador, and some others.
Contador not looking good, constantly hanging in the back of his group and no cooperation in that group either.

Reminded me a bit of Landis in '06 ;-) Similar circumstances and parcours too!

Sanchez had a mechanical/puncture with 10km to go and swapped bikes and lost quite a bit of time and had to chase back on. Horrible luck and timing as that's right when Evans took the front and drilled it for the next 7km. Poor guy, he was looking decent and had been well placed all tour (well, after the TTT and the crashfest of week 1).

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 21 July 2011 19:00 (thirteen years ago)

I was talking with a friend after the stage and he picked F. Schleck to win the Tour, without hesitation. He may have a point -- Frank has had a quiet Tour, should be the freshest of the GC contenders after today, and just needs one big day on Alpe d'Huez to possibly win the Tour. It's fairly similar to Carlos Sastre's situation heading into Alpe d'Huez in '08.

The top 10, according to the BBC. Spot the deliberate mistake:

1. Thomas Voeckler (Fra/Europcar) 79hrs 34mins 06secs"

2. Andy Schleck (Lux/Leopard Trek) +15"

3. Frank Schleck (Lux/ Leopard Trek) +1:08"

4. Cadel Evans (Aus/BMC Racing) +1:12"

5. Damiano Cunego (Ita/Lampre) +3:46"

6. Ivan Basso (Ita/Liquigas) at same time

7. Alberto Contador (Spa/Saxo Bank) +4:44"

8. Samuel Dumoulin (Fra/Cofidis) +5:20"

9. Tom Danielson (U.S./Garmin) +7:08"

10. Jean Christophe Peraud (Fra/AG2R) +9:27"

Ha, no respect... ever!

Any BOLD predictions for tomorrow?

Stage Win: Sammy? Bert looks genuinely hurt. Maybe one of the Italians like Basso or Cunego will be given a longer leash with 2km to go?

GC: I say Frank and Andy try to take it to Cadel but Cadel ends up on top. Sort of a retread of Liège-Bastogne-Liège but this time with Evans as Gilbert.

it's a meme i made and i like (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 21 July 2011 20:42 (thirteen years ago)

I think Andy will be fucked after today. Cadel had to grind up the whole of the Galibier in some insanely big gear with everyone on his wheel, that's got to have tired him out a bit. I can see the logic in saying Frank's going to win the stage tomorrow. I really don't know who's going to win the Tour, though. Voeckler somehow still being in yellow adds an extra dimension to it all. One thing's for sure - it won't be Contador again (bar some kind of Landis-Lazarus thing), but at least one (or possibly both) of the eternal second placers (A Schleck & Evans) is going to narrowly miss out again.

There is power in an onion (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Thursday, 21 July 2011 20:44 (thirteen years ago)

ridic coulda woulda, but if that first day's crashfest didn't delay contador, things would look quite a bit different for him, he'd be at 5th at 3:30 or so.

suicide breaks only work cuz everyone wants you to kill yourself (Hunt3r), Thursday, 21 July 2011 20:56 (thirteen years ago)

No idea what happens tomorrow, but I think this is still Cadel's to win - over the two days, I reckon he'll take it on aggregate. No idea what Andy will have in his pocket for tomorrow, since he was looking rubbery up the top at the end - I also think that it's gonna have hurt him psychologically a bit to have missed out on yellow today. The Frank theory looks good, but I think he's gonna need a very chunky cushion heading into Saturday. I can't remember exactly how bad he is at time trials, but I know that Andy's better than him. And Andy isn't very good at them.

Tommy lost it in that car park yesterday, but watching him scramble home today was absolutely fantastic, albeit this felt like the first time where he was seriously, properly, completely hurting - the final few metres looked like he was giving birth to a porcupine.

Ideal situation tomorrow = Bert suicide attack early. He gets out to a point where it could be dangerous, and then the fun begins.

g++ (gbx), Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:48 (thirteen years ago)

Regardless of the good work he delivered today (although way, way, waaayyyyyy too late), it would be such a shame to have such a fantastic tour end up with such a lousy and unworthy winner like Cling-on-Cadel. For god's sake man, you have the strength, fucking attack once in your life. I'd step on his dog and get him all riled up in order to prevent this reactive, cowardly riding, if I could.

I think Contador will try something tomorrow. He's had a terrible day today and lost the podium basically, but I find it hard to believe him having two consecutive bad days in a row. If he pulls an Andy and might get 4 minutes, who knows..

Realistically though, I think it will be someone from an early escape group winning the stage. Voeckler will still be sharply dressed in yellow after tomorrow's stage. And all the big shots will be scratching their heads Saturday night how that weird, passionate French guy is still in the lead.

such a lousy and unworthy winner like Cling-on-Cadel. For god's sake man, you have the strength, fucking attack once in your life

It's only a few days since he attacked DOWN a mountain in the pouring rain dropping all the other favourites. This wheelsucker idea is out of date (see Dauphine 2009, World Championships 2009, Fleche Wallone 2010, and that Giro stage in 2010 through the mud).

^exactly. And he's won a fucking stage already as well

yuoowemeone, Friday, 22 July 2011 07:04 (thirteen years ago)

Thirded. Did you miss how he dragged all his rivals up the Galibier yesterday? No wheelsucking there.

Mark C, Friday, 22 July 2011 09:31 (thirteen years ago)

Alright I was a bit harsh maybe. And of course I didn't miss his great work yesterday (as I already pointed out). I just feel he could be such a big winner if he attacked more. He's obviously got the legs and power to do so. It was only when it was apparent yesterday that absolutely no-one wanted to or was able to go after Schleck that he put himself forward.

Asamoah Nyan (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 22 July 2011 09:44 (thirteen years ago)

That's the thing though, he doesn't have the explosive power of Andy or Bertie. He's playing to his own strengths - it'd likely be suicide for Cuddles to attack in the hope that none of his rivials will chase him down.

Mark C, Friday, 22 July 2011 10:12 (thirteen years ago)

When I play football I'm a decent defender but a shit striker. Would you heckle me from the sidelines about never making a surging run into the box?

Mark C, Friday, 22 July 2011 10:12 (thirteen years ago)

Depends what team you're playing for ;-)

Nah, point taken. Cadel is stronger than I have ever seen him this TdF, which makes one wish he'd try and attack more in the mountain stages. But he's in this to win it, true, and he knows the TT on Saturday could help him do that with this small time gap.

Anyone still counting on Bertie today?

Asamoah Nyan (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 22 July 2011 10:29 (thirteen years ago)

He's struck hard before after a day where he's struggled in the mountains, but Evans (amongst others!) looked just too strong for him yesterday, not necessarily in cracking him, but just being able to keep with him no matter what he does.

Fizzles the Chimp (GamalielRatsey), Friday, 22 July 2011 11:26 (thirteen years ago)

Andy and Cadel will be eyeing each other all the time. If Contador can make a break similar to Andy yesterday, who knows? He still holds the record of climbing Alpe d'Huez fastest ever, 37min something (Dauphiné 2010).

Asamoah Nyan (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 22 July 2011 11:39 (thirteen years ago)

Incredible chase by Sammy and Rolland, I was sure Contador would win. Rolland rode Sanchez's wheel at the end, but he was chasing hard all day, was dropped on the lower slopes of Alpe d'Huez and did a great job just to ride back to Sanchez to give himself a chance. Great ride.

Voeckler was also angry when he climbed l’Alpe d’Huez, especially at the curve after the village of Huez-en-Oisans, which is nicknamed “the Dutchmen’s curve”.

Spectators gave him a hard time and he openly reacted verbally in front of the cameras. “The public booed me”, he said.

“I know why: it’s because I didn’t wait for Johnny Hoogerland when he got kicked offside by a car the day I took the yellow jersey."

Asamoah Nyan (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 22 July 2011 17:57 (thirteen years ago)

Ha, I've read Voeckler (and Hoogerland) are not very popular in the peloton.

w/r/t Evans vs. Schlecks TT data. In '08 after Alpe d'Huez, Frank and Cadel were tied for 2nd behind Sastre after Frank's massive victory. The following day, Cadel put THREE MINUTES into Frank on the TT. Frank is considered to be the superior of the two brothers in the TT discipline.

it's a meme i made and i like (Steve Shasta), Friday, 22 July 2011 18:00 (thirteen years ago)

Really? The first stage after his fall, Hoogerland was emotional about how everyone and noone (Cancellara, Gilbert) literally pushed him up the first climb as a support.

"I believe I can keep the jersey," Andy Schleck said. "I'm in great form, and this time trial route is not one for the real specialists of the discipline. It will be much more about who still has the most energy left - and I still do.

"I'll start last tomorrow, and my motivation is great, my legs are super so I'm confident I can actually keep this jersey until Paris. 57 seconds is a lot, and when you have the yellow jersey it gives you wings..."

Unfortunately, his father Johnny described the situation a little differently. "I don't think it's possible," he told reporters on the finish line. "Cadel Evans is one of the best time triallists in the world, and he already knows the time trial well from the Dauphine. But I still have hope, and I know that the last week of the Tour also means different parameters. Both Fränk and Andy are strong in the last week, and perhaps Cadel will have a bad day."

You guys,

Cadel and Andy are frail climber midget/mantises.

Tomorrow's stage is pancake flat and will be a high-speed circuit race once they make it into Paris. They will have to contend with the likes of Omega-Pharma, Garvelo and HTC leadout train diesels pulling 30-40mph up and down the streets of Paris. The skeletal GC favorites we watch day in/day out on the Alps/Pyrenees will be tail-gunning and enjoying the ride, there is no hope for attack from those meek beasts.

many xposts

I don't think so, but fairly recently, Rumsas attacked Beloki multiple times on the Champs Elysees in 2002 to try to take back a minute and jump from third to second (he failed).

Schleck, whose last race before the Tour was the Tour de Suisse, conceded that he had never ridden the Grenoble course and only knew it from television footage. "But I know a little bit what it's like from talking to the guys who did it in the Dauphine," he said.

Shades of 2003, perhaps, when Armstrong had trained on the final TT course but Ullrich had only watched a video of it.

If Andy Schleck wins the Tour, then in retrospect he probably won it on the flats leading up to the Galibier on Stage 18, when he somehow stretched his advantage from three to four minutes. I still have no idea how the guys in the GC group behind him let him add to his lead like that.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 22 July 2011 20:16 (thirteen years ago)

Well, there is a reason why (crashes aside) the tours are seldom decided until we hit the mountains. Flat stages = high speed sprints. The advantage goes to the swift, not the featherweights.

Someone had to cut that out - what a job.

But how can cardboard Zabriskey get a medal if he has left the race early? I don't get it?

StanM, Sunday, 24 July 2011 21:32 (thirteen years ago)

Zabriskie, sorry.

StanM, Sunday, 24 July 2011 21:33 (thirteen years ago)

It's a team effort, first three riders across the line every day.

first three everydayyyyy, RIP nate dogg

anybody else think j.c. peraud's tour debut at 34, netting 10th, is enormously impressive? if phil and paul hadn't constantly confused him with roche/gadret/riblon, people might've taken more notice!

Amazing set of pics there. Close-up pics of Hoogerland's injuries after his crash (#58-61 in the first set) aren't for the weak of heart.

On the plus side, I've won the ILX fantasy cycling competition by a huge margin (though there were only three of us in it).

I'm going to spend the next few weeks reading nothing but cycling books. Then it's the Tour of Britain in September: not the same as the TdF but it goes some way to filling the hole. It was great a couple of years ago, when Eddie BH was all over it.

what do you think an entire tdf campaign costs a typical squad?

Europcar annual budget ~€4,000,0000
Leopard Trek annual budget ~€20-30,000,000

You get two Schlecks and a Cancellara for an entire Europcar team.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Monday, 25 July 2011 17:03 (thirteen years ago)

Been trying to find a complete overview of the budgets from Pro Cycling Teams. They showed an overview on Dutch telly a couple of days a go. It said Astana and Rabobank paid most per year with € 14 million, but I'm not sure if that is right. Ed, do you have a source?

I for one am (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 25 July 2011 17:08 (thirteen years ago)

from a tweet by a L'equipe hack

It's entire budget rather than just salaries. Leopard had some pretty fancy accoutrements so I could believe those kind of numbers.

Are the post-tour criteriums ever recorded/broadcast? Can I find them on filesharing sites? I love watching the pros race crits.
