ILX: What year did you start posting?

Inspired by my recent discovery that I started posting just a little bit after HOOS, LJ, and contenderizer...guess there was a huge influx of Googlers round then? Anyways what year did you start posting? (Hope this hasn't been done before...?)

I joined because of a Smiths thread. Hardly an exclusive club, I'd imagine.

Also unknown as Zora (Surfing At Work), Thursday, 23 June 2011 22:14 (fourteen years ago)

i apparently started in mid 2006, almost exactly five years ago. which is long enough, but not quite as long as it seems. abt 14,000 posts in that time, which works out to a little less than 8/day. i can do so much better.

first checked ILX out because someone on another board had complained that ILX was a sexist boys' club and not a friendly environment for girls interested in music, which made me curious as to whether you all were really so horrible. of course you were and are, so i stayed.

i'm almost positive that there was some other, forgotten (and likely best forgotten) username that i used briefly in my earliest days, but god knows what it might have been...

apparently april 2002 (Taking Sides: Gold Teeth Thief vs 2ManyDJs fandom decidedly not held in check). had been lurking for a very long time before that - i remember reynolds and momus both mentioning it alot so was probably aware of it from them but what got me to actually check it out was matos mentioning it constantly (or maybe just linking to it) and from there seeing that the handful of ppl who i 'followed'(?) on art of the mix were here AND more to the point that there was a tie-in to freakytrigger, which i know i discovered thru matos and love(d). was still very wary of actually posting here, truth be told thought ppl who posted on messageboards were losers (still think there's a large degree of truth to this), quit working at a record store in feb 2002 and my guess is by april 02 was actually in the mood to engage in conversation about music again only instead of having to resort to real live ppl in town and fake my way thru conversations about moldy peaches or whatever i could talk about stuff i wasn't tired of talking about and was much more interested in ie mashups.

Before I heard and found punk, Sabbath was the meanest of the music. The name alone used to freak out some kids.

Zac and I found ourselves the last two standing on a couple of occasions where he walked me home, had a flirtatious and terrible game of pool, attended a Mean Red Spiders show at Healey's bar, broke up with significant others, had what we thought was rebound type hookup, got married in 2006 (ilxors in attendance - the awesome Scott Woods as wedding DJ) and now we have two kids. Could also blame Kate who brought Zac here (I think, anyway) oh life.

It would take forever to find my first WDYLL, but I suspect I've got a goatee in it.

Sunny and I were talking about how convenient it would have been to have an OK Cupit profile back in the day, but being that we met on that Joos board and have been married for over six years with two kids, I guess we did okay without it.

2000 - some pompous and ill-advised crap about the Go-Betweens, I think

Fapped 2002-2005. Played an ILX gig 2007. Now not really here much any more.

I was still in my flippin' 30's when I made my first post, now at 49 and a half that seems like a distant memory. I am a different person now, so much has happened since then - loved, lost and lurved again, got a posh job, very, very nearly died in 2009, stopped playing sport, had a parent die. Now I have sort of ended up as a very small time semi-pro musician (as well as having the posh job). Eldest off to Univ in the autumn.

I occasionally see an old post of mine and realise what an utter, utter, utter tool I was a lot of the time on here. No, I really was! (And still probably am). Still, ILX was a constant backdrop for my 40's - lots of amazing people and at least one friend for life came out it.

Good wishes to one and all :)

just checked, first post in Jan. 03, after lurking a few months. first under my real name, then after getting a job switched to another name for a while, and then to gypsy mothra, and then to this. (i think tipsy was first introduced as a Sandbox variant on gypsy, and then i just kept it.)

all of my early posts are embarrassing, but so are a lot of the later ones.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 26 June 2011 14:45 (fourteen years ago)

Many people have come on here and talked about embarrassment over their earliest posts. I'm lucky in that I was well into my 40s (44) when I first posted; all that stuff you have to go through before you're comfortable with the way you write, that happened with me long before I arrived here. If my timeline had matched others here--say from my early 20s into my 30s--I'd have the same problem; I cringe when I think about stuff I wrote from about '85 to '93. Everything here's been me. Whether that's a good thing or not is another story.

clemenza, Sunday, 26 June 2011 14:55 (fourteen years ago)

That's why I'm lucky. Why I'm unlucky: I started old, now I'm even older.

i'm embarrassed by all my posts equally btw

ogmor, Sunday, 26 June 2011 15:08 (fourteen years ago)

I was thirty. I've been looking at my old posts and they're not that embarrassing, most of what's written is me and that's fine. It's pretty rare that I'll go off on one, either in mood or topic or trolling, so I'd be happy enough for ilx to serve as a diary/epitaph if: (i) I had any time or inclination to reminisce; and (ii) I ever said much of consequence.

Jeez, my early posts could be wordy though! Sometimes preachy too. I used to spend an age honing one only to find it'd been xposted thirty or forty times. No wonder I got few replies. Just a question of getting used to the format I guess - my previous board was all full of old folk, you get time to think with them.

(xp to clemenza I guess, no implications intended)

June 2001, 10 years ago yesterday in fact. Life is unrecognisable now for loads of reasons - work, social life, family, everything. Although I've met loads of people through this site, the biggest difference has been the friends or friends of friends I've met through those people, to the extent that I have whole social groups of people who have never posted to ILX but who I would probably never have met had it not been for this this place. I think it's unlikely I'd have met my girlfriend either, although she's never posted here either.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 11:15 (fourteen years ago)

I think the posting community has been generally consistent since 2006/07 or so? Most of the early doors posters who were going to leave had gone by then, and most other people have stuck around.

Hello Ned. Re: a very old conversation. Did you know that there is a very good Chameleons tribute band playing in the Uk right now under the name of 'Chameleon Vox'? The weird thing is that now Mark Burgess has joined them as singer! I though you should know ;)

Also hello to the great Jeff W! I still remember fondly your parody post of me moaning about people at work not liking Toots and The Maytals.... or something :)

Re: Matt DC - yes the scism was 2007, wasn't it? Lots of cracking posters left then. Some urgent and key London FAP questions - did Dave Stelfox ever turn up to one or am I imagining it? Dave Q DID turn up to one and was EXACTLY like we imagined him - mad as a door. I miss mark sinker and think of him whenever pondering how prog happened or what bands were true punk and which were not. Best music thread was the 'Down in The Tube Station At Midnight' lyric-crit. Worst thread was the Killing Joke 'Honour the Fire' debacle in which I was a bit shit. I hope dear old Alex in NYC doesn't still have a curse on me!

Dr.C, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 15:49 (fourteen years ago)

I *think* Dave S briefly turned up at a Trig Brother I wasn't at, although I've met him in the pub a few times since then. Dave Q was also around for a bit up until about two years ago (he turned up on a few FreakyTrigger radio shows) and has kind of disappeared off the radar since. Mark S and most of the others are still on FT in various comments boxes and so forth.

This is very true.

I'd forgotten about
1) when one of the GTO 'Miss' girls emailed me to offer an Arthur Lee track for my album project (the "ILX has a bucket" compil), only to immediately email me back to say 'sorry, wrong number')... 2007 actually is still relatively new, then? It's tracing a fairly neat downwards trajectory from 2001.

Is that a problem? I'd've thought new blood/fresh meat was essential to how these things function, but maybe not.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 7 July 2011 11:57 (fourteen years ago)

the overall activity of the board has never and probably never will drop significantly, though. some great newer people have come along over the years but i think the board culture is mostly enriched by having the same people hang around and know each other and get sick of each other for a decade or more.

The boards switching to registered-only should be factored into that curve as well.

We're still approving at least 10 new usernames a day though, probably closer to 20.

Matt DC, Thursday, 7 July 2011 13:01 (fourteen years ago)

are there server records that would make doing a legit version of my graph easily doable? or would working out how many people were active at any time involve actual work?

thomp, Thursday, 7 July 2011 13:06 (fourteen years ago)

I doubt there are any records that precede the move over to the new server and new code about three years ago.

It's all just buffy gifs instead.

you know, with the whole "brony" movement happening now I am forced to admit G was ahead of his time

DJP, Thursday, 7 July 2011 13:33 (fourteen years ago)

I hate you for making me look up the word 'brony'.

Matt DC, Thursday, 7 July 2011 13:38 (fourteen years ago)

i assumed it was something to do with brodie.

i was wrong.

I have watched every episode of that show multiple times! But that's because I have an almost 4-yr old obsessed with MLP, not because I'm a twee motherfucker.

online pinata store (Nicole), Thursday, 7 July 2011 13:44 (fourteen years ago)

i knew there was somebody on this board who wasn't a twee motherfucker

SB OK (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 7 July 2011 13:45 (fourteen years ago)

nicole is not now, nor has ever been, a twee motherfucker

I would MUCH rather watch My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic than Weeds, I dodged a bullet there.

online pinata store (Nicole), Thursday, 7 July 2011 13:52 (fourteen years ago)

Is it true that My Little Pony pictures are one of two things that are banned from 4chan, the other being ch1ld p0rn?

Matt DC, Thursday, 7 July 2011 14:17 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i figured this was the case, or something like it

there is that smart bit of code that retroactively linked user names to display names, though, so i wondered
