not to be a downer, but to get one formality out of the way up front: how should the deceased be factored into the equation?

if you want my call: a deceased sibling is still your sibling -- like if your only brother passes away you don't become an only child

step siblings and half siblings are tough to call, should probably be left to the individual -- like if you really consider them a sibling, lived with or grew up with them, etc.

― alan all destroyer (some dude), Saturday, 25 June 2011 02:27 (fifteen years ago)

Okay, I've gone for 'one older brother' though I additionally have an older step-brother who I often just refer to as 'my brother'. It was actually quite a difficult decision to make.

― emil.y, Saturday, 25 June 2011 02:31 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i realize i didn't take into account gray areas very much w/ the poll options -- but again i figure it's probably best for people to just make the call for themselves if they consider a half/step/etc. a sibling.

― alan all destroyer (some dude), Saturday, 25 June 2011 02:32 (fifteen years ago)

like i very rarely think about the fact that i had a step sister for nearly half my life, because i never lived with her or spent a lot of time around her

I am so fascinated with the idea of siblings. I wonder all the time what I'd be like if I had some.

i kinda get this even though i have a sibling -- because of his severe autism, i couldn't really hang out or communicate with him in the standard "cool older bro" sense. otoh, i love seeing his goofy smile every time i get to visit him.

― feta coulis (get bent), Saturday, 25 June 2011 05:51 (fifteen years ago)

Same here, although I did marry younger than either of my siblings did. My brother is as dumb as a fencepost, but even he has gone farther and done more than I have.

As I mentioned, my youngest sister is about to turn 22. I've always kind of felt like her Uncle Brother.

― Pleasant Plains, Saturday, 25 June 2011 23:57 (fifteen years ago)

I think my youngest is going to turn 9 in a couple of weeks (I'm on the verge of 30)

Ive always been fascinated by the family dynamic where there is a huge, almost whole-generation age gap between sibs.

― Bloompsday (Trayce), Monday, 27 June 2011 04:56 (fifteen years ago)

My friend Tom is the youngest of seven, and his oldest brother is 26 years older than he is. It was weird when we were in our twenties knowing his brother was already over 50 (and now he's in his sixties).

― Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Monday, 27 June 2011 04:59 (fifteen years ago)

addemdum: he has nieces and nephews older than he is.

― Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Monday, 27 June 2011 05:08 (fifteen years ago)

My kids are close in age to my youngest brother and sister, which was pretty great for all 4 of them.

― Jaq, Monday, 27 June 2011 05:11 (fifteen years ago)

my little league baseball coach was the eldest of this enormous italian family. he was 21 when his youngest brother was born. legend has it that the wee brother thought the eldest was like a friend of the family or something until he was 10 (and having known them, this is not farfetched)

― mookieproof, Monday, 27 June 2011 05:18 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah JF one of my close friends is the youngest of several mucholder sibs (she's 41, theyre in their 50s at least? maybe 60s?). Sadly 2 have passed away. Her parents seem like grandparents to me, theyre well into their 80s but they're awesome cool.

― Bloompsday (Trayce), Monday, 27 June 2011 06:40 (fifteen years ago)

Went to high school with dude who founded Razorfish, who is the youngest of seven siblings. His oldest brother was friends with my mom and graduated with her in 1962, from the very same high school.

In answer to the poll: one younger sister, with whom I have little in common as regards appearance or interests - to the point where we used to tease my mom about whether or not she had a fling with the milkman or something nine months before B was born.

I misspoke there; it's the half-sister who will be turning (I think) 9 in a couple of weeks

that's the same situation my dad (father of the 9 year old) grew up in; second oldest out of 14; his younger brother, my Uncle Joe, was three years old when I was born

― the mods must be crazy 2 (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 27 June 2011 13:45 (fifteen years ago)

I'll let Sunny talk about it more, but she has a nephew who's older than her.

Male with one younger sister, who is getting married in a month (a fairly pointless wedding, coming two years after the birth of their daughter and after three years of home-ownership preceded by a further 15 years of cohabitation)

(8 of whom are 'half' siblings but i object to that term)

― jackie tretorn (elmo argonaut), Monday, 27 June 2011 19:24 (fifteen years ago)

i object to that term too, unless they're really short. i have one sister – by adoption - but i'll defy anybody to discount her as my sister.

― remy bean, Monday, 27 June 2011 19:34 (fifteen years ago)

I think it depends on the situation

my gf has half-siblings who were much much older / grew up as another family. it'd be strange if they called each other sister. but my mother's little (half) brother grew up with her and her sister and the fact that he's a half-brother almost never comes up...never thought of him as a half-uncle.

― iatee, Monday, 27 June 2011 19:37 (fifteen years ago)

Whenever my half-brother said something smart-aleck back when he was a teenager, I'd say, "You see, that's the Yankee in ya mouthing off."

Either the eldest of 2 or the eldest of 5 depending on the half-sibling interpretation. I'm 10-15 years older than the 3 half-siblings and I don't really have any relationship with them or my dad, so I'd probably go with 1 sibling.

123 to 32

― iatee, Friday, 1 July 2011 00:12 (fifteen years ago)

only 17 only children seems like the most shocking stat

but I'd also guess that only children would be the least likely to open this thread

― iatee, Friday, 1 July 2011 00:13 (fifteen years ago)

yeah...maybe i should've made the thread title "how many, if any, siblings do you have?"

aw lxy, you are my favourite brand of troublemaker <3

i'm glad pleasant plains said i'm not mean, because i'm really not, but my big sister and my mother (who is also a big sister) have got an arsenal of big sister tricks that is mind-boggling, including a lightning swift shift from bully to victim that is plain ridiculous once you figure it out.
