^^^ this whole THE END OF ORIGINAL MOVIES piece made me want to look up what kind of original flicks actually have made money since 2000, and these are the top 50. i excluded any sequels or remakes or adaptations, but generally left in 'based on a true story'/historical stuff unless the screenplay was based on a book or something, and satires/parodies i generally left in as well.

this lineup has a lot on common w/ the digital animation poll i just did but eh what can you do

some dude, Friday, 1 July 2011 19:03 (thirteen years ago)

I'd love to see an Elf/National Treasure crossover.

Went with Ratatouille.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 1 July 2011 19:05 (thirteen years ago)

xp: Voting for "Elf, National Treasure"

it's a meme i made and i like (Steve Shasta), Friday, 1 July 2011 19:05 (thirteen years ago)

hahaha oops

some dude, Friday, 1 July 2011 19:06 (thirteen years ago)

made the list w/ commas and then put in line breaks when i did the poll obviously

some dude, Friday, 1 July 2011 19:06 (thirteen years ago)

LOL, soooooo many 'toons.

ephendophile (Eric H.), Friday, 1 July 2011 19:07 (thirteen years ago)

What Lies Beneath is also Harrison Ford and Michele Pfeiffer's last hit, right?

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 1 July 2011 19:07 (thirteen years ago)

i suppose the joke option will easily win the poll now huh

but i guess it won't skew things too much if the Elf fans AND the National Treasure fans share an option

some dude, Friday, 1 July 2011 19:07 (thirteen years ago)

xspost That said, Wall-E, easily. I contest Scary Movie's originality.

ephendophile (Eric H.), Friday, 1 July 2011 19:08 (thirteen years ago)

Indiana Jones 4 and Hairspray, respectively

some dude, Friday, 1 July 2011 19:09 (thirteen years ago)

Wall-E, easily

polyphonic, Friday, 1 July 2011 19:10 (thirteen years ago)

Scary Movie falls under the satire/parody caveat i made in the OP -- i mean it's not like Shrek is totally 'original' either

some dude, Friday, 1 July 2011 19:10 (thirteen years ago)

wait, Scary Movie made more than Scream???

DJP, Friday, 1 July 2011 19:11 (thirteen years ago)

oh wau, shine on you crazy Wayans'

DJP, Friday, 1 July 2011 19:12 (thirteen years ago)

34% cartoons btw!

some dude, Friday, 1 July 2011 19:12 (thirteen years ago)

Scary Movie DID make about 50% more money than Scream, but Scream isn't on this list because it came out in the '90s

some dude, Friday, 1 July 2011 19:13 (thirteen years ago)

there's like a 10-year period of my life that all feels like it was the same year, lol

DJP, Friday, 1 July 2011 19:14 (thirteen years ago)

Surprised Collateral didn't make the list ($215M worldwide).

you've got great robot conflict (Eazy), Friday, 1 July 2011 19:20 (thirteen years ago)

i was going off of the domestic gross list (lowest movie here, Rio, is at $139 vs. Collateral's $101)

some dude, Friday, 1 July 2011 19:30 (thirteen years ago)

mr. and mrs. smith is a remake

Lamp, Friday, 1 July 2011 19:52 (thirteen years ago)

pretty sure it doesn't actually have anything to do w/ the 1941 film of the same name

some dude, Friday, 1 July 2011 19:57 (thirteen years ago)

pretty sure its a remake of a crappy 90s tv show of the same name tho

Lamp, Friday, 1 July 2011 19:58 (thirteen years ago)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._%26_Mrs._Smith_(1996_TV_series)

Lamp, Friday, 1 July 2011 19:58 (thirteen years ago)

nope, although it is funny how they have the same name and similar premises but no formal link

some dude, Friday, 1 July 2011 20:01 (thirteen years ago)

Cowboys vs. Aliens is "original"

a man is only a guy (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 1 July 2011 20:02 (thirteen years ago)

voted Knocked Up

Grown Ups made a bunch of money? that's weird

a man is only a guy (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 1 July 2011 20:03 (thirteen years ago)

haha id always thought it must be 'based on' the tv series. *shrug*

Lamp, Friday, 1 July 2011 20:04 (thirteen years ago)

Cowboys Vs. Aliens is a comic.

Ktulu says, I've come to hate my body (wk), Friday, 1 July 2011 20:05 (thirteen years ago)

anyways voted for the fast & furious cuz its o.g.

Lamp, Friday, 1 July 2011 20:05 (thirteen years ago)

huh - had no idea

it's so stupid I figured it had to be original
xp

a man is only a guy (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 1 July 2011 20:07 (thirteen years ago)

wtf is Paul Blart: Mall Cop. never heard of the film, or Kevin James for that matter.

Ludo, Friday, 1 July 2011 20:08 (thirteen years ago)

do you live in america?

some dude, Friday, 1 July 2011 20:09 (thirteen years ago)

Cowboys & Aliens is adapted from a graphic novel btw

some dude, Friday, 1 July 2011 20:09 (thirteen years ago)

do you live in america?

no, that's it probably, but someone give me a 1 sentence description. i mean it has a 5 on IMDB yet apparently it's hugely succesful. Is it like Eddie Murphy talking with animals-style comedy, or something?

Ludo, Friday, 1 July 2011 20:10 (thirteen years ago)

It's funny because I just read that article and did the same thing. But I looked at the inflation adjusted list which I think is a lot more illuminating. In the top 20, 8 of them are based on popular novels (GWTW, 10 Commandments, Zhivago, Exorcist, Snow White, Ben-Hur, Jurassic, Graduate), one musical (S.O.M), then of the 11 original stories, 7 are Lucas/Spielberg related, 2 Cameron, 1 Disney. So the only original story left over is The Sting!

Ktulu says, I've come to hate my body (wk), Friday, 1 July 2011 20:10 (thirteen years ago)

no, Kevin James's new movie Zookeeper is his talking with animals one. Paul Blart is just a garden variety goofy family comedy.

some dude, Friday, 1 July 2011 20:11 (thirteen years ago)

ah. these comedians, always talkin' with animals.

Ludo, Friday, 1 July 2011 20:12 (thirteen years ago)

shrek and how to train yr dragon are based on pretty prominent kids books, i think over the hedge is from a comic strip, and avatar is a remake of dances with wolves

balls, Friday, 1 July 2011 20:12 (thirteen years ago)

well, i didn't use box office mojo's inflation adjusted list because it'd be a lot harder to sift through and find the most recent movies (although there's probably not THAT much difference inflation would make between 2000 releases and 2010 releases, i'm assuming)

some dude, Friday, 1 July 2011 20:13 (thirteen years ago)

my bad on the cartoons, i always forget that some of them are adaptions

some dude, Friday, 1 July 2011 20:14 (thirteen years ago)

kevin james was the star of the solid sitcom king of queens, he is in two other movies on the list also

balls, Friday, 1 July 2011 20:14 (thirteen years ago)

btw if i'd done this poll correctly (made Elf and National Treasure separate options, took out Shrek and Dragon and Over The Hedge), the last 2 options would be The King's Speech and Dinosaur

some dude, Friday, 1 July 2011 20:17 (thirteen years ago)

And while it was a great article and I really enjoyed it there were some other odd things he glossed over. Creating a movie from the poster first has a long history, at least going back to Sam Arkoff, whose approach was of course made mainstream by Spielberg with Jaws. It's not an inherently bad idea.

Another interesting related topic is the idea of brands that aren't existing products or stories. Like "Bridesmaids" is a brand in a sense. Or "Mall Cop". or Easter. There's a good column about this by Terry Rossio where he calls the concept "mental real estate" http://www.wordplayer.com/columns/wp42.Mental.Real.Estate.html

I also thought his question of "who would you rather see running Hollywood, people who think Jaws is a classic or people who think Top Gun is a classic" would make an interesting poll. I'm not sure the answer is as clear cut as he seems to think.

Ktulu says, I've come to hate my body (wk), Friday, 1 July 2011 20:18 (thirteen years ago)

well, i didn't use box office mojo's inflation adjusted list because it'd be a lot harder to sift through and find the most recent movies (although there's probably not THAT much difference inflation would make between 2000 releases and 2010 releases, i'm assuming)

But the interesting larger point I think is that this isn't anything new. It's always been the case that top grossing movies were based on popular novels or some other piece of existing headspace. At least now we get comic book movies instead of biblical epics.

The Spielberg/Lucas/Cameron era was the real anomaly.

Ktulu says, I've come to hate my body (wk), Friday, 1 July 2011 20:19 (thirteen years ago)

And in the next 20 of the inflation adjusted list, the only originals are Forrest Gump, Lion King, Ghostbusters, Independence Day, Home Alone, and Beverly Hills Cop. Maybe you could consider Butch Cassidy an original idea, but I don't think so. To me, the original ideas really stand out as some of the worst movies on the list!

Ktulu says, I've come to hate my body (wk), Friday, 1 July 2011 20:24 (thirteen years ago)

No masterpieces here, although the first half of Wall-E comes closest. If Superbad had made the list I would have voted for it.

little mushroom person (abanana), Friday, 1 July 2011 20:40 (thirteen years ago)

Superbad placing at #25 on the ilx films of the decade poll is still so o_O to me, that movie really ain't all that

some dude, Friday, 1 July 2011 20:46 (thirteen years ago)

thought Slumdog was based on a novel?

voted Paul Blart, obv, the movie that Superbad wished it could be

SB OK (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 2 July 2011 11:50 (thirteen years ago)

yeah slumdog was totes an adaptation

i voted for fast & fury but after recently seeing 2012 i wish i went with that

Ayatollah Colm Meaney (Princess TamTam), Saturday, 2 July 2011 11:51 (thirteen years ago)

my bad, i had a feeling in the back of my head that Slumdog was an adaptation but i forgot to look it up

some dude, Saturday, 2 July 2011 11:55 (thirteen years ago)

not bitching cos the list works anyway but i think Juno might've been based on some comic book too?

SB OK (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 2 July 2011 11:58 (thirteen years ago)

think the point still stands that most of these "original" ideas are effing terrible

SB OK (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 2 July 2011 11:59 (thirteen years ago)

shit actually my proper answer should prolly have been Finding Nemo, waaaaaaay my fave Pixar flick

SB OK (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:00 (thirteen years ago)

juno won the oscar for best original screenplay iirc

some dude, Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:01 (thirteen years ago)

saw the last half of Taken and it's a winner. violent, racist and stupid always a good look for an action movie

SB OK (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:01 (thirteen years ago)

Wall-E, easily

johnny crunch, Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:01 (thirteen years ago)

you should redo it without animated movies in the poll

Ayatollah Colm Meaney (Princess TamTam), Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:02 (thirteen years ago)

yeah you're right about Juno, think i mix it up in my head with Persepolis or something

SB OK (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:02 (thirteen years ago)

Taken is the one with Liam Neeson, right? Is that any good? Sort of wanted to see that.

I've seen like 5 of these. Weird.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:04 (thirteen years ago)

OK 13 but still fewer than I would have thought.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:04 (thirteen years ago)

Taken is great in a v. stupid way

yeah if Pixar gets 80% of the votes or something maybe i will

some dude, Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:07 (thirteen years ago)

Knocked Up, but I kinda want to give it to Ricky Bobby

da croupier, Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:26 (thirteen years ago)

I haven't seen like 90% of the cartoons but that's the kind of thing I figure I might as well hold off on until I have a kid.

da croupier, Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:28 (thirteen years ago)

taken is HILARIOUS in a totally unintentional way, mostly because of how straight-faced liam neeson's line-readings are.

"I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you."

alright there, oskar schindler. calm down.

death to ilx, long live the frogbs (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:30 (thirteen years ago)

knocked up, btw. but my inner 13-year-old is punching me in the nuts for not voting fast and the furious.

death to ilx, long live the frogbs (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:31 (thirteen years ago)

i like the comedy evil Ay-rabs in Taken too

SB OK (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:34 (thirteen years ago)

it is a v. progressive film that explores the two great american fears of our time: gibberish-talking arabs with guns/headscarves and pretty rich white girl gets kidnapped.

death to ilx, long live the frogbs (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:38 (thirteen years ago)

finding nemo, much as i'd like to vote for something that isn't an animated kids' flick.

if you take out the kid stuff, comedies and action-adventure-thrillers, you get:

The Sixth Sense
Cast Away
Signs
What Lies Beneath
Juno
Slumdog Millionaire

and if you take out horror movies, it goes down to just three films. one of which is a not-so-broad comedy, while the other two are crowd pleasing dramas in which someone overcomes something.

GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT

Looking for that #Swagu? (contenderizer), Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:40 (thirteen years ago)

xp

u forgot sinister untrustworthy french dudes

SB OK (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:41 (thirteen years ago)

so yeah the sequels and remakes and adaptations have (mostly) been excised which probably puts some of the remaining ones lower on the overall list, but some of these are so weird to me as "top grossing films of the decade." i know it'd probably be the same if i looked at a list for any decade but..."what lies beneath" and "bruce almighty"?

people really, really do love will smith. i know this, and yet somehow it always surprises me.

death to ilx, long live the frogbs (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:44 (thirteen years ago)

he's pretty charismatic when he's not on his dour a-man-is-an-island trip

da croupier, Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:46 (thirteen years ago)

i can see the appeal with Will Smith, he's a proper movie star and even now i know he's a wacky scientologist i still can't help liking him

SB OK (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:47 (thirteen years ago)

actually the dour stuff was pretty solid until seven pounds or so too

da croupier, Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:47 (thirteen years ago)

i read the hilarious plot of Seven Lbs on Wiki so i never have to sit thru it. still kinda want to tho

SB OK (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:49 (thirteen years ago)

something about him just bugs me. it's probably the dour thing.

keep in mind i'll watch the fresh prince any time i catch it on tv so i'm not quite sure when i turned against him.

death to ilx, long live the frogbs (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:49 (thirteen years ago)

that's more of a classic american ensemble piece, though.

SB OK (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:52 (thirteen years ago)

haha I just checked to see if he was still planning to remake Flowers For Algernon (cuz we obv haven't seen enough of Will as an isolated troubled messiah type) and it looks like that's been replaced with a movie called The Last Pharoah - which is at least a more dramatic display of his current shtick.

da croupier, Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:53 (thirteen years ago)

What's the lowest grossing of these movies? Soderbergh's two 2000 films gross almost $150 million apiece in the U.S.

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:53 (thirteen years ago)

if the last pharoah involves him as a superhero wearing egyptian garb and flying around zapping people with a staff, i'm in.

death to ilx, long live the frogbs (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:54 (thirteen years ago)

Isn't there already a movie of Flowers For Algernon?

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Saturday, 2 July 2011 12:54 (thirteen years ago)

it's called Forrest Gump iirc

re: smith there's also this upcoming 21st century 'original' that is certain to make this list, what with smith, shyamalan, lil' karate kid and the plot of wall-e: Untitiled Will Smith/Jaden Smith/M. Night Shyamalan film SET IN THE YEAR 3000 Anticipation Thread

da croupier, Saturday, 2 July 2011 13:00 (thirteen years ago)

I voted for Elf, National Treasure, but for genuine Elf-admiring reasons.

Alba, Saturday, 2 July 2011 13:09 (thirteen years ago)

(cornyfuxx opinion, but the first half hour or whatever of Wall-E was almost enough for me to vote for that)

Alba, Saturday, 2 July 2011 13:09 (thirteen years ago)

i think what i liked best about taken was that it stressed that as an attractive white american once you are in europe you wont even be able to leave the airport before some skeezy french dude has you kidnapped and sold into sex slavery

Lamp, Saturday, 2 July 2011 16:15 (thirteen years ago)

not sure how the Cowboys vs Aliens discussion came up above, but the concept was sold to the studio based on a drawing, then the crap graphic novel was created after that.

Zachary Taylor, Saturday, 2 July 2011 16:23 (thirteen years ago)

And in the next 20 of the inflation adjusted list, the only originals are Forrest Gump, Lion King, Ghostbusters, Independence Day, Home Alone, and Beverly Hills Cop.

Gump is a book adaptation. And Lion King is more or less Hamlet.

Michael Bay, CEO of Transformers (Phil D.), Saturday, 2 July 2011 16:47 (thirteen years ago)

Finally finished that Harris article and boy does it ever contain a faulty premise at the center of its argument:

"who would you rather see running Hollywood, people who think Jaws is a classic or people who think Top Gun is a classic"

Um, neither please because there's no appreciable difference - they're the same people! Love it or hate it, Jaws was the premier high concept film right down to its easily-reproducible-at-any-size poster. So all the elements that contributed to Top Gun's success (synergy, saturation booking, package deals, etc.) were in effect long before 1986 (and, in various contexts, long before Jaws as well). And with such a shaky foundation, Harris moves on to tons of other weak arguments. I (sorta) share his concern with blockbuster/franchise/sequelitis. But his article is definitely not my manifesto.

That said, of the choices above, easily Cast Away which I do think is a masterpiece.

I can't recall a single thing about these:

Wild Hogs
Over the Hedge
Megamind
Rio

Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 2 July 2011 16:55 (thirteen years ago)

inception didn't qualify for this list?

wall-e is maybe my favorite here, but i did like avatar for the most part and of course taken.

its p funny but as a movie it doesnt really work, liam neesons character is basically just omniscient and omnipotent, theres liek no tension or w/e

btw i watched the new liam neeson goes buck in europe one w/january jones the other day, it maybe relies a lil too heavily on neeson wandering around looking befuddled in germany for my tastes, to its credit the plot was p outlandishly left field but it just never really came together, i honestly have no idea what compels me to view these ridiculous films but as soon as i saw the comercial for this one i knew it figured in my destiny

ice cr?m, Saturday, 2 July 2011 18:57 (thirteen years ago)

ice cr?m otm, though, about lack of tension becuz neeson is just an arab-killing robot. it's basically like point blank, except instead of lee marvin as the ultimate emotionless get things done hardman it's liam neeson alternating between being emo over his kidnapped white daughter and killing "terrorists" with all the elan of taking the recycling out in trash night.

ryan, Saturday, 2 July 2011 23:31 (thirteen years ago)

that fuckin scene where wilson drifts away and hanks is yelling for him would be kind of awesome and pathetic if it wasn't for the corny swelling music, if a movie ever needed to avoid trad movie music in order to best make it work, it was this one.

dudes above otm about taken's lack of tension, neeson is too imposing in this movie, he just kinda rips through europe and kills everyone w/o trouble and gets to his daughter, it's like watching a nintendo master play super mario bros for the 1000th time and getting through to the princess in 10 min. still good times though.

Zach's right, the Cowboys & Aliens comic came ten years after slimeball Scott Rosenberg sold the film rights to his amazing concept. When it still hadn't been written or made and the rights lapsed, Rosenberg hired some people to write and draw a comic, since he still had exactly no creative concept beyond "cowboys vs aliens," then literally paid comics shops to take it, then re-sold the rights by going "hey look this is the number-one selling graphic novel, Hollywood."

And Lion King is more or less Hamlet.

The Lion King is more or more a complete fucking theft of Kimba, The White Lion

Liked:
Gladiator
Knocked Up
Shrek
The Sixth Sense
Wedding Crashers
Taken

Monsters, Inc.
Ratatouille
Juno

Meh, worth a rental:

my no.2 would be "gladiator" believe it or not -- the joaquin phoenix show has gone on so long and gotten so strange that one forgets he was really good in this movie -- complicated in a way that big summer action movies are rarely allowed to be.

Was enough of a Titanic (the ship) buff that I was able to coast through the lame love story part on the strength of the production design.

ephendophile (Eric H.), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 16:02 (thirteen years ago)

I think Batman & Robin may still be the only movie I slept through in theaters.

ephendophile (Eric H.), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 16:02 (thirteen years ago)

I'm not sure I've ever fallen asleep in a movie theater -- I usually fight the urge -- but I got pretty fucking drowsy during the first LOTR.

jaymc, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 16:02 (thirteen years ago)

One of my friends falls asleep during nearly every single movie she sees in a theater. I think it's just sitting still in the dark that does it to her but the most impressive time was when she started snoring during Hot Fuzz which was one of the loudest movies I can remember seeing. I couldn't believe she didn't wake up.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 16:03 (thirteen years ago)

oh wait i fell asleep during that awful michel gondry movie too

if you're such a Titanic buff then it should've driven you crazy that the pipe fittings in the movie were welded steel instead of being flanged and threaded!!!! once i noticed that i could never take the movie seriously again

If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you."

Lilo & Stitch, it's one of the best Disney movies of all time. Also, while I think Pixar especially has made great use of computer animation, I'm still sad that traditional animation is slowly becoming an obsolete medium (in the West at least), and Lilo & Stitch felt like a swan song to that. (Until Princess & the Frog, obviously, which was good, but not as good as L&S.)
