Since I'm in my last weeks of my pregnancy, I am now even more prone to sleeplessness (is that even a word?). On top of that Ophelia wakes up because of her cold. I can't look in the mirror in the mirror without nearly collapsing, I look ghastly due to sleep deprivation.

Why could I not sleep last night?
1. I was worried about remembering an appointment at 3 p.m. (not like I wouldn't wake up on time wtf) 2. I had Randy Newman's "Simon Smith and His Amazing Dancing Bear" in my head on repeat, and that shit is not exactly a soporific

well when i was about 8 or 9 i claimed to be a spurs fan without knowing anything about football, but then charlton's ascent coincided with me becoming aware of their presence in my local area and tbh their profile as a friendly club with honest toiling and sometimes surprisingly spry footballers suited me down to the ground. have never been tempted away. yes i have become quite partisan in spurs' favour of late, but fortunately this phase will pass because weather permitting tomorrow is charlton-millwall

Just in the last few months I have been experiencing the middle-aged thing of sleeping for about 4 hours, waking up, going to the john, then taking 30-90 minutes to fall asleep again. ie, it usually takes 7 hours in bed to get 5.5-6 hours of sleep. This is going to make going out on weeknights very tough unless I'm prepared to feel like crap at work. :p
― Rage, Resentment, Spleen (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 23 December 2009 14:34 (sixteen years ago)
^Same sleep patterns usually for me, too. Waking and wrestling to stay asleep, 9hrs=6.5hrs, etc, just minus the having to pee. Can't wait to get older and add that dice to the game.
Last night though was more staring at the ceiling all night, getting a fractured couple hours, gf awake for finals, lay there and then two more fractured hours, force self outta bed, COFFEE...Meeting girlfriend's sister for the first time later today, should be a good first impression.

ambien >>>> lunesta >> melatonin
i think i still need 3 more days of sleep to catch up, though.
― tehresa, Friday, 29 January 2010 19:06 (sixteen years ago)
Do any of those not stick with you for the entire next day? I take a couple Tylenol PM once in a while and they help me get to sleep but the entire next day I have no brain function.
― Möbius dick (╓abies), Friday, 29 January 2010 20:54 (sixteen years ago)
there are some after effects to all of them :( i think melatonin is the worst.
― tehresa, Friday, 29 January 2010 20:57 (sixteen years ago)
i dunno for me at this point it is sleep + limited brain function the next day vs. no sleep + no brain function ever
is that the order in terms of effectiveness/strength?
if i take a whole melatonin i'm utterly monged the next day; it's gotten to the point where a quarter of a pill will do the job but still only just leave me approximately functional the following day. fortunately i'm down to my last pill so i'm just gonna have to deal with the insomnia in future.
― what kind of present your naked body (Upt0eleven), Friday, 29 January 2010 20:58 (sixteen years ago)
yeah i think that ambien is most effective and melatonin is least. melatonin gives me restless sleep and lots of panicky waking up in the middle of the night moments and then i feel totally shit the next day. last night i took ambien and it hit me fast, which i appreciate, bc usually w/ lunesta it's still 2 or 3 hours before i can sleep.
― tehresa, Friday, 29 January 2010 21:01 (sixteen years ago)
Where I've been at is:
limited sleep + dice-roll wrt brain function next dayvsfull night sleep + pretty seriously hampered brain function
I only ever get no-sleep when I'm really stressed out, say for example I have a job interview in the morning, in which case it's better to be pretty foggy than no sleep anad looking strung-out dumb.
― Möbius dick (╓abies), Friday, 29 January 2010 21:02 (sixteen years ago)

all work and no-sleep makes you CRAZY
― what kind of present your naked body (Upt0eleven), Friday, 29 January 2010 21:03 (sixteen years ago)
I kind of have those panicky/disoriented wake ups with Tylenol PM so possibly ambien is worth a shot

― tehresa, Friday, 29 January 2010 21:05 (sixteen years ago)
I've never not been this way. Even when I was a little kid my mom would check on me late at night when I should have been long asleep and I'd be laying there in the dark, quietly, looking up at the ceiling. I just can't stop the wheels from turning; I just wish they'd do something useful since that's the case!

Job searching? Feeling displaced in a new city? Maybe it's just getting older, I know it's been getting incrementally worse for me as I near 30 and I'm totally dreading what that will mean for middle age.
― Möbius dick (╓abies), Friday, 29 January 2010 21:16 (sixteen years ago)
probably all of those things. i definitely think if i had a more regular daily schedule it'd help. the worst is when you are really tired and you go to bed and then 3 hours later you're still awake but it's too late to take anything if you don't want to kill the entire next day.
― tehresa, Friday, 29 January 2010 21:17 (sixteen years ago)
I knowwwwww. The whole being monumentally tired and expecting to crash so hard and to just not is a real bite in the ass.
― Möbius dick (╓abies), Friday, 29 January 2010 21:19 (sixteen years ago)
i've always had trouble sleeping through the night if i'm nervous/stressed. now that i'm teaching, it happens every. single. semester. a couple of weeks before classes start, i wake up at 2, can't sleep, fret/plan, etc and then get up at 6 totally tired and nervous.
lately i've started taking the sleeping meds earlier, like around 8:30 or 9, so that i can fall asleep at 10 or so. even if i wake up at 4, that's plenty of sleep to function on. not ideal, but anticipating the problem and treating it before i start to fret about it seems to help.
never tried prescription meds tho. i'm not a chronic insomniac, like the kind of person who can't sleep for days. i just can't get a solid night's sleep undisturbed by 2am freakouts.
― figgy pudding (La Lechera), Friday, 29 January 2010 21:22 (sixteen years ago)
I'm taking some herbal drops. You can take 15 to 30 depending what you want (just relaxed, take 15, if you have problems with sleep, take more duh). I have to admit I feel rather relaxed and sleep is gooooooood. Sadly my oldest kid has decided to give us nightly visits and, as a result, my husband or I go to sleep in her bed as there's not enough space for three persons in our bed.

doesn't drinking tea before bed make you have to pee and/or worry about having to get up to pee so you can't sleep? does to me and i don't even have a sleep problem
― harbl, Monday, 1 February 2010 22:09 (sixteen years ago)
i've always gotten up to pee at night, so it's pretty mch habit and i don't count it as an actual interuption of sleep cycle. Just stumble to the bathroom, pee, stumble back to bed, then sleep for a fe more hours.
― kingkongvsgodzilla, Monday, 1 February 2010 22:14 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah I quit drinking tea before bed bcz I WILL wake up to pee at least an hour, usually two or so, before I want/need to get up, and then I'm just UP. But IIRC there was a red bush/rooibos tea I would drink that did good to relax me and did help with the getting to sleep part of it.

Ha! The night that I post this as my ultimate solution to insomnia is the night that it doesn't work AT ALL. I think my problem was that I drank camomille before bed the first time, then when I woke up, drinking more didn't help. Had to take a shot of Nyquil, which didn't even put me down right away.
Some background that was lost when I tried to do the first post:
My fiance and I have very different work schedules at the moment. She usually gets home around 11 or 12, and I have to get up for work at 4:45. So I go to bed with the kid around 9, get a few hours of sleep, then she calls me when I need to let her in (our doors are bolted). When she gets in, she eats dinner and watches TV and a bunch of other noisy stuff, like a person should be able to do when they get home from work. Hence, my sleep problem.

For a while there, I was going to bed around 6-8 PM, waking up at midnight, then going back to bed at 1-2 AM. (My nursing school hours start at 6 AM on clinical days, something I'm still trying to deal with.)

There's no reason at all that you shouldn't drink all the beer in the fridge if you want to fall asleep now but wake up at 4 or 5am mysteriously because alcohol fucks up your sleep patterns. If 5am is an okay wake-up time, then go for it dude.

Get your doc to indicate "dispense as written" on your next scrip, Sunny. Iirc that tells the pharm that your doc thinks none of the generics will meet your needs, and therefore the name-brand should be billed at the generic rate because you don't have a choice. That's if your insurance program offers that benefit, but I don't think it's that rare.

All prescription sleeping pills do this to me and I hate it!!! I don't have chronic insomnia, thank goodness, but I will have really super restless sleep if I'm stressed or if I am too stimulated right before I got to bed (like last night because today is my first day back at work after a four day weekend, so it's like the Sundays but x4 and I was up late reading a book I really liked, so all night I was restlessly tossing and turning and watching mind movies of the book). Tylenol PM usually does the trick, but I have to be careful because I will sleep for 14 hours if I take a full dose.
The worst ever was when I took a tiny little piece of a Seroquil because I was in law school and SUPER STRESSED and had to study for an exam the next day and our neighbors were having a giant party and yes, I slept through all the noise but at 5 pm the next day, I was still so tired and incapable of activity that I just sat on the bed and cried in despair.

should stop watching entourage before bedtime. also should stop smoking before bedtime. nicotine is a stimulant right? or is it a downer? I can't remember because I thought the reason why people smoked & drank coffee was for the dueling banjos effect. but then I think I read somewhere else that it's a stimulant.
― dayo, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 06:44 (fifteen years ago)
I started sleeping sooooo much better when I quit smoking. "Better" here meaning deeper, more solid sleep that is easier to fall into. Also when I smoked I could never sleep in because the moment my brain was even half-conscious from light I would want a cigarette. Now I can't sleep in because I have a dog that wants to play at 8 a.m. on the nose.

I await the results with interest - what is the speed factor? probably not best for hypnotherapy in that it will be terrifying as fuck
slowing down some KTL would be next-level horrific, maybe a 2-hour 'theme' could be the final spur to drive me over the edge into savant dementia

btw I think it's bullshit that eligibility rolls over every year around here. I've been summoned three times in the last three years, but I was talking to a friend in Brooklyn who said they can only be summoned once every four years.
Anyway, still awake. I hope the coffee is better this year than it was last year.

I just noticed that cute girl who was in an episode of Community a few weeks ago is in a new UPS commercial. (There's a joke in here somewhere that involves a package, but I can't find it.)

After some extensive research (that is, playing it through for the first time in a couple years at least), I've determined that "Wedding Song" is the best track on the first Psychedelic Furs album.
Crawling back into bed now.

sleeping is hard!
:)
Sometimes it is but usually it's one of the things I do best which is, I guess, what makes not being able to sleep so annoying for me. Bah. It'll come.

The latter although that little rotter is the reason I was up in the first place. He got a case of middle of the night woofs and would not shut up. Guess who's sleeping now though. Smug little bastard.

i thought of posting to one of the drunk threads because it seems more acceptable to post inconsequential rambling there, but i'm not drunk

My sleep has changed quite a bit recently: about half the week, I wake up somewhere between 4 and 6am, and my brain is just on and racing and I'm unlikely to fall back asleep (although I sometimes I don't feel as tired as I'd expect to for the rest of the day). I wonder if my in-bed screen habit is having a cumulative effect on staying asleep (falling asleep hasn't been a problem for me thankfully for quite some time). Or are my sleep needs just changing with age?
I know that the general rule of thumb is not to look at screens 1-2 hours before trying to sleep, but I've also been trying various ways of not getting up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, including limiting my liquid intake after 4pm, to little avail. Being on a screen keeps me stay awake a little longer so that I'm able to make one last pit stop to try to help get through the night -- which has only ~kinda~ worked, so maybe I should just scrap this strategy? IDK!

More water can also help you stay asleep (and even regain it after nocturia), not that my hydration levels are exemplary.
