top-grossing LIVE ACTION original movies of the 21st century

over half the votes in the original thread top-grossing 'original' (non-sequel/remake/adaptation) movies of the 21st century went to animated flicks, and since I accidentally left out Inception and felt dumb about that, here we go with a gratuitous re-poll. it was a lot of fun the first time, might as well go for a bonus round, etc.

the last 17 options are all new additions that were not in the last poll, along with Inception and Bridesmaids, which made enough money since the last poll was started to jump onto the list

once again, no sequels or adaptations (although historical/based on a true story stuff is fine if no particular book or article was used as source material)

It's not perfect by any means, but I honestly think Inception is the most entertaining of the ones I've seen.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Sunday, 10 July 2011 00:59 (thirteen years ago)

5 Adam Sandler movies
4 Will Ferrell movies
4 Vince Vaughn movies
4 Kevin James movies (!)

Locutus of Snorg (some dude), Sunday, 10 July 2011 01:01 (thirteen years ago)

uh this is pretty hard

call all destroyer, Sunday, 10 July 2011 01:06 (thirteen years ago)

i have it down to hangover/bridemaids/wedding crashers/talladega nights. i don't think there's a drama i would consider voting for.

call all destroyer, Sunday, 10 July 2011 01:11 (thirteen years ago)

amazingly even though i've seen at least a few minutes of virtually all of these (except for the 2 most recent ones and a couple really dire-looking ones like Wild Hogs and Bringing Down The House) i'm really at a loss for a clear favorite. maybe i will struggle to come up with a POX.

Locutus of Snorg (some dude), Sunday, 10 July 2011 01:13 (thirteen years ago)

ones i have probably watched the most but don't necessarily love: Wedding Crashers, Signs, Knocked Up, Elf

watched appreciatively and chin-strokingly but have no real attachment to: Inception, Inglourious Basterds

lol i got paid to review this shit: Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Click, Four Christmases

lol i paid to see this in the theater: Avatar, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Gladiator

so fuckin overrated/played out: The Hangover, Meet The Parents, Superbad

Superbad is a sight better than the other movies it's been lumped with, it doesn't deserve any kind of backlash.

i'm kind of indifferent to IB but it made a ton of money and definitely seemed v successful at the time (especially compared to most recent Best Picture nominees). MUCH more surprised to see Four Christmases or Farenheit 9/11, etc.

never been to disneyworld or whatever but feel that pirates of the caribbean is probably not less original than many of these movies. presumably erin brockovich is based on a non-fiction bestseller. and im sure pearl harbour was a thing.

would s*m*a*s*h 1994 (history mayne), Sunday, 10 July 2011 18:04 (thirteen years ago)

yea but the pirates of the carribean like, didn't actually happen

Neanderthal, Sunday, 10 July 2011 18:06 (thirteen years ago)

that's what im saying. it's original. these other films stole from reality.

would s*m*a*s*h 1994 (history mayne), Sunday, 10 July 2011 18:07 (thirteen years ago)

and the ride, before the movies came out, was a pretty fun family thing where you rode in a boat in the water and watched pirates pillage, burn shit, shoot cannons and chase women around, kinda creepy imo

Neanderthal, Sunday, 10 July 2011 18:07 (thirteen years ago)

the first and second half of my sentences seem to be in conflict

Neanderthal, Sunday, 10 July 2011 18:07 (thirteen years ago)

Superbad or Erin Brockovich.

Voted for Ricky Bobby.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 10 July 2011 18:12 (thirteen years ago)

IB is a string of scenes ranging from crappy to amazing (opening scene is the best) that don't really hang together as a movie.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Sunday, 10 July 2011 20:51 (thirteen years ago)

I've seen 33 of these films.

resonate with awesomeness (jel --), Sunday, 10 July 2011 21:04 (thirteen years ago)

Tempted to vote Gladiator just to spite people because I think it's a great piece of melodramatic entertainment that gets overly hated on by people taking it too seriously. Also tempted to vote Knocked Up to spite Morbs (I did enjoy it).

Brockovich and Pearl Harbor are based on real events but there was no book or anything used as the basis for the screenplays. Pirates was an existing title/'intellectual property' even if the plot/characters were pretty much invented for the movie.

(((it out))) (some dude), Thursday, 14 July 2011 00:45 (thirteen years ago)

did they change the pirates of the caribbean ride at disneyland after the movies came out?

no they just made 'johnny depp: the ride' an additional attraction

those are good

5 Adam Sandler movies
4 Will Ferrell movies
4 Vince Vaughn movies
4 Kevin James movies

I know there's overlap there but bleurgh. several too many ben stiller films in there as well.

wanted to go and see bridesmaids last night - which i imagine might have been in the running - but was sold out so ended up at the tree of life instead. torn b/w the fast & the furious, king's speech, fahrenheit 9/11, superbad and gladiator.

Upt0eleven, Thursday, 14 July 2011 10:01 (thirteen years ago)

first pirates of the caribbean movie totally a ripoff of "the secret of monkey island" iirc

seen maybe a dozen of these, IB actually the best of them.

Dear Projectionist (blueski), Thursday, 14 July 2011 10:04 (thirteen years ago)

did they change the pirates of the caribbean ride at disneyland after the movies came out?

they added three johnny depp animatronics + one geoffrey rush one, but all the classic tableaux are the same so w/e

reddening, Thursday, 14 July 2011 10:06 (thirteen years ago)

I quite like Sweet Home Alabama. I mean, it's obviously not a Good Film, but it's very watchable.

Hated Gladiator, mainly because of mumbmlmmumbllemumbegrrmumble.

sometimes all it takes is a healthy dose of continental indiepop (tomofthenest), Thursday, 14 July 2011 12:00 (thirteen years ago)

99% of the ferrell movies here > 99% of the others.

(counting wedding crashers in that, obv it's a vaughan/wilson thing but ferrell's cameo in it is one of the best things he's done.)

Inception was my write-in choice in the last poll but here I'm gonna plump for IB which I really enjoyed. The quality of this list is not high.

Of the 22 movies on the list I haven't seen, the only ones I want to are Bridesmaids (lol marketing works) and The Fast & The Furious which I think I would probably enjoy (I didn't mind XXX...)

On the Disney World version of the ride, you can hear Depp's voice throughout.

meet the parents or inglorious basterds are a clear top 2 for me, then superbad & some will ferrell movies

also would've voted for any bourne film, had one made it

gucci mande (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 14 July 2011 15:00 (thirteen years ago)

haha i was shocked that the 'bourne' movies had made less money than a bunch of stuff itl but then realized theyre adaptations

anyway would vote for the fast & the furious over inglorious but i think a bunch of these are 'ok'. the only ones here that ive seen & hated were 'what women want' and 'click'

A cave dool approaches! (Lamp), Thursday, 14 July 2011 15:05 (thirteen years ago)

if i'm filtering by the rigorous critical process of "movies i might at some point watch again for pleasure" then uh

Knocked Up
Taken
The Fast & The Furious
Superbad
Inglourious Basterds

the only ones i'd probably stump for as "good" movies would be knocked up and ib. though my love for vin diesel racing a car, drinking a corona, and staring enigmatically into the middle distance is pure and true.

avatar's problem is that while it lived up to and imo exceeded its billing as a visual landmark, all of its pleasures were tied up in those visuals, so it has exactly zero merits as a film to re-watch at home, unless you're a billionaire w/ a 3D IMAX in your house

horseshoe, Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:22 (thirteen years ago)

aaron eckhart is improbably dreamy in erin brockovich. he seems like an insane persin irl.

DEHUMANIZE YOURSELF AND FACE TO BLOODSHED (Princess TamTam), Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:24 (thirteen years ago)

i really wanted to see basterds and then i never got around to it what with all the seasons of police procedurals i have to catch up on.

horseshoe, Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:24 (thirteen years ago)

it is probably my favorite of his after jackie brown now.

i am surprised by how many tarantino movies i actually own on dvd.

death to ilx, long live the frogbs (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:24 (thirteen years ago)

i saw aaron eckhart on letterman or something one time? maybe he was just high. he seemed sooooo actor-y, like super-hyper and nothing he was saying was making any sense. it's too bad he's not that chilled-out biker with a heart of gold in real life.

horseshoe, Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:25 (thirteen years ago)

I think it's ny favorite now but followed by Jackie Brown. That changes often though so idk.

(。◕‿‿◕。) (ENBB), Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:26 (thirteen years ago)

i caught e.b. on tv a while back after having not seen it since it came out and eckhart kinda freaked me out given where his career's gone since

death to ilx, long live the frogbs (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:27 (thirteen years ago)

and by "career" i mean "his face"

haha i know what you mean by actor-y and i hate when you find out someone you think's cool is like that

DEHUMANIZE YOURSELF AND FACE TO BLOODSHED (Princess TamTam), Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:28 (thirteen years ago)

he had a crazy face to start with

DEHUMANIZE YOURSELF AND FACE TO BLOODSHED (Princess TamTam), Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:28 (thirteen years ago)

eckhart definitely looks like a cool chill dad bro, but i think he's totally a dude w/ dark secrets

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:29 (thirteen years ago)

dark gross prostitute secrets imo, but i'm speculating

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:29 (thirteen years ago)

yeah but like burly chilled out biker dude to harvey dent, district pretty boy is not a career arc i could have envisioned

death to ilx, long live the frogbs (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:29 (thirteen years ago)

i feel like i tend to assume actors i think are great are smart in some normal-person way? and then they say nonsensical things and it's like what happened? i am confused.

horseshoe, Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:29 (thirteen years ago)

the things Aaron Eckhart's done, only he and Kelsey Grammar know

HOOBASTANK is my co-pilot (DJP), Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:29 (thirteen years ago)

i would buy that J0rd! did he used to be mormon or am i just over-associating him with labute?

horseshoe, Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:30 (thirteen years ago)

The Wicker Man Truck Stop Patron

his finest role imo

Intellectual property that should be Hollywood movies:

Funyuns
The House on the Rock
Chicago Metra
Flowbee
McGruff the Crime Dog
Winkers pants
Hot Topic
K-Mart's Mr. Bluelight
The Rio Hair Naturalizer System
Wacky Packages (esp. Drowny)
Chip Clips
Mr. Whipple
Valley of the Dolls (a film that follows the brilliant novel more closely and gives us the Showgirls-esque masterpiece we deserve)

P.S. Signs was M's worst until this Airbender shit.

P.P.S. The Break-Up is the 2nd best film on this list, Enchanted 3rd.

Kevin John Bozelka, Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:36 (thirteen years ago)

how the hell did anchorman not make this list but blades of glory did

lemon kerrang! (jjjusten), Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:40 (thirteen years ago)

also, voting superbad

also, basterds is garbage

greetings from challops corner i know, but man i hated that movie

lemon kerrang! (jjjusten), Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:41 (thirteen years ago)

blades of glory grossed $60m more xp

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:41 (thirteen years ago)

i bet you anchorman's dvd sales are off the charts tho

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:42 (thirteen years ago)

anchorman really ended up being a kinda cult hit, it makes sense that the movies that followed it did better in theatres

oh i guess j0rdan got there first...

A cave dool approaches! (Lamp), Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:43 (thirteen years ago)

that movie is prob the most quoted movie of the past 15 years but the thing w/ a movie like that is ppl need to see it a few times to catch all the great lines etc & also anchorman was just a huge word of mouth movie

i remember practically everyone i knew who saw it in theaters (granted we were 16 or w/e) didn't like it all + didn't really get it & then a year or so later everyone was collectively like "wtf were we thinking..."

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:44 (thirteen years ago)

aaron eckhart is neil labute's greatest creation

this list is wow bad, of the movies on it i've seen there's not one i'd call good w/o major qualification.

i'm stuck between bridesmaids and superbad, probably gonna go superbad

goole, Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:45 (thirteen years ago)

i loved it in the theater but i went with a group of, like, 15 people which i think helped.

horseshoe, Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:46 (thirteen years ago)

anchorman, that is

horseshoe, Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:46 (thirteen years ago)

i never saw superbad either

horseshoe, Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:46 (thirteen years ago)

yeah totally, anchorman belongs up there w/ like zoolander and freaks and geeks as comedies that needed time to find its audience but ended up being really popular

A cave dool approaches! (Lamp), Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:47 (thirteen years ago)

i think im going w/ bridesmaids but superbad a strong contender

also inglorious besterds

those are probably the only 3 movies i genuinely liked on the list

max, Thursday, 14 July 2011 17:00 (thirteen years ago)

maybe inception too and the bat-man movie

max, Thursday, 14 July 2011 17:00 (thirteen years ago)

50 first dates is a deeply weird movie

max, Thursday, 14 July 2011 17:00 (thirteen years ago)

its a shame forgetting sarah marshall didnt make the list considering how much better it is than any of the other apatow comedies, bridesmaids excepted

max, Thursday, 14 July 2011 17:01 (thirteen years ago)

that movie is prob the most quoted movie of the past 15 years

*cough* Crapolean Dynamite *cough*

I'm with you on that. Meh is being generous.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 14 July 2011 23:09 (thirteen years ago)

i was meh about Basterds upthread but i rewatched it the other night and enjoyed it a lot more the 2nd time around

some dude, Friday, 15 July 2011 01:13 (thirteen years ago)

avatar's problem is that while it lived up to and imo exceeded its billing as a visual landmark, all of its pleasures were tied up in those visuals, so it has exactly zero merits as a film to re-watch at home, unless you're a billionaire w/ a 3D IMAX in your house

― J0rdan S., Thursday, July 14, 2011 12:19 PM (8 hours ago) Bookmark

imo Avatar didn't look that special, if nobody told me how much more it cost than every other sci-fi opus i never would've guessed and there were like two or three bits of imagery the entire movie that i thought were especially memorable or novel. if anything i was surprised that the plotting was at least average and it didn't totally feel like a video game cut scene.

some dude, Friday, 15 July 2011 01:16 (thirteen years ago)

It looked nice, but it didn't take my breath away like the first time I saw the Jurassic Park T-Rex, or the LOTR battle scenes.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Friday, 15 July 2011 01:25 (thirteen years ago)

yeah admittedly i didnt see it on THE BIG SCREEN so i can only go by my small screen impressions of the various commercials and making-of clips on entertainment shows and internet things but it looked like a swank video game to me.

death to ilx, long live the frogbs (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Friday, 15 July 2011 01:30 (thirteen years ago)

on the other hand i am not at all ashamed to admit i had a couple sharp intakes of breath during the first five minutes of fellowship of the ring alone.

yeah chap otm. i love top shelf FX eye candy as much as anyone and Avatar was ultimately at best maybe the third shelf down.

some dude, Friday, 15 July 2011 01:35 (thirteen years ago)

yeah admittedly i didnt see it on THE BIG SCREEN

then you didnt see it at all maaaaaaaaaaan
