― Bloompsday (Trayce), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 10:20 (fourteen years ago)
Hm. The internet says you can't buy them any more but you can buy "brew"-flavoured Wham bars. The packaging doesn't look familiar so maybe I just found a box of Irn Bru bars which had been on a newsagent shelf for a very long time.
Anyway I dunno if you have Wham bars in Aus but the Bru ones were similar chewy tooth-destroying things.
Sometimes I still get cravings for spearmint Mojos (chew things in a variety of flavours, similar to Fruit Salads I guess) despite probably not having had one since about 1987.

Don't get me started. In the early 80s lady came to my front door doing market research for this. She asked me what I thought of it and I said it was revolting and reminded me of toothpaste.
I was appalled by the tune in the advert too - couldn't believe it was an actual real pop song in the sixties given the crap lyrics and wasn't written speshly for the ad. Guess I was a rockist before Pete Wylie coined the term.

Uniteds were the same size as Clubs and Trios. iirc, they were divided into three sections each of which had dimples on the top a la a golf ball.
Some time in the mid eighties they changed the recipe and design of Jaffa Cakes to an inferior one yet no-one seems to remember this.
The Jaffa cake got slightly thinner and the base changed colour and didn't taste as nice.

I have never had a crispy pancake but have always wanted one. When i was back home recently I was shopping with my mum and I picked a pack out of the freezer. She looked at me and said, "you're not buying that junk are you?" and I put it sadly back. I am 35 and want to eat a findus Crispy Pancake!

It's the texture and flavour of the outer shell that kills me before I've even thought about the filling. I can't even remember there being curry ones. I think my mum bought minced beef and some other kind that involved stinking cheap cheese. She'd often overcook them so the joined up bit opposite the fold was brick hard.
When my then girlfriend and I first went food shopping the week we moved in together I told her in no uncertain terms that I would never eat another crispy pancake in my life and that if she bought and cooked them she'd be eating alone. That was in 1993 and I haven't eaten a single one since.
By amazing coincidence - on Saturday she dug some out of the freezer as we'd been away for a fortnight and had nothing in and she attempted to give it to my son. He refused point-blank to even have it on his plate, calmly informing her that crispy pancakes are "minging". A proud moment for his old dad.

Somebody mentioned ice lollies with jelly in them, they were Jelly Terrors iirc. Part of a small range of would be horror lollies (I want to say Lyon's Maid?) that also featured Haunted House, which was a plain milk lolly that had a ghost which appeared as you liked one of the sides.

According to a recent response from a representative at Pepsico's UK Customer Service department (dated August 27, 2010) "I am pleased to advise I am not aware of any plans to discontinue producing Cheese Flavoured Moments", it would appear that the parent company of Walkers and indeed Smiths has no current plans to axe this product.

Texan was a nougat/toffee bar covered with chocolate, manufactured during the 1970s and 1980s. It was withdrawn from sale in the 1980s but was briefly re-launched as a limited edition by Nestlé in 2005 during a wave of sweet-related nostalgia.
The advertisements for the Texan showed a cartoon cowboy, who was captured and tied to a stake. When asked if he had a last request he was given a Texan bar which took him a long time to eat, meanwhile the bandits fell asleep ensuring his escape. The cowboy's catchphrase was "A Man's gotta chew what a Man's gotta chew", also "Sure is a mighty chew!"

('Mexican' flavour was the best)
I grew up in the rural Scottish borders in the 70s so my first experience with curry was Vesta chicken curry which we sometimes had as a treat, or when my mum made a curry, lashings of curry powder and raisins. I was quite a bit older when I first had a proper Indian meal which was a real eye opener. Naan bread, what's that?

wonder if the McEnroe impersonator in the Smiths Tubes ad upthread was the same guy who made the record "Chalk Dust (The Umpire Strikes Back)" under the name Brat?
Does anyone remember Good 'n' Crunchy crisps? They had bran in them and had serrated edges. The advert had a cartoon with a cartoon jungle animal ensemble a la Um Bongo or Coco Pops with a tune which went "They're so good, good 'n' crunchy" to which the animals danced. I remember asking my mother what the dance was called and she told me it was th jive, so that was my first introduction to the jive!
and Whickers? They were also a crispy snack which resembled Shreddies in appearance. They were advertised in a medieval themed advert including a court jester (who may or may not have been Michael Staniforth ie Timothy Claypole) and a tune with the lyrics "The wonderful thing about Whickers, is Whickers are wonderful things" to the tune of the Tigger song from the Disneyfied Winnie the Pooh.
Was Nerds candy like Space Dust? If so I think that the calcium oxalate crystals were found to be harmful in some way themselves, rather than that a saboteur caused their demise.
― Grandpont Genie, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 15:17 (fourteen years ago)

^ Good grief they still do them. Made out of catarrh, no wonder they taste so bad.
― Quantum of Pie (NickB), Thursday, 21 July 2011 09:37 (fourteen years ago)
I found some microchips in a fridge a few weeks ago thinking 'I can't believe you can still get this'. Couldn't tell after four or five of them if they were always this shit OR if you couldn't get them anymore and the ones I'd found were ten years old. The latter proved to be the case but I'm pretty positive they may have improved with age.
― owenf, Thursday, 21 July 2011 09:37 (fourteen years ago)
Oh and banana bread beer I think was still sold at this horrible little hippie pub in Peterborough last time I was there. Along with Raisin beer which is equally as disgusting.
― owenf, Thursday, 21 July 2011 09:39 (fourteen years ago)
The 'microwavable junk food# market is bigger than ever.http://www.rustlersonline.com/menuThere's a truck that delivers a shit-ton of these seemingly every day to our corner shop.
― Servants of the SBankh (snoball), Thursday, 21 July 2011 09:40 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah, freezers and fridges full of that shit in the Londis at the end of my street. I bought one of those microwaveable subs on a hungover trip home from a long night out one morning, and it was fucking vile.
Microwaveable pizzas are the work of the devil though, seriously.
― ailsa, Thursday, 21 July 2011 09:54 (fourteen years ago)
The only acceptable use of a microwave for cooking is heating up soup or baked beans imo.
― Quantum of Pie (NickB), Thursday, 21 July 2011 09:55 (fourteen years ago)
the above two posts are truth y'all. I avoid even soup and beans in the microwave. Hobs 4eva

Chicago Town microwave pizzas are pretty good TBF. But microwaveable subs/burgers turn into drywall if they're not eaten within 30 seconds.
― Servants of the SBankh (snoball), Thursday, 21 July 2011 10:02 (fourteen years ago)
actually I do garden peas in the microwave
― owenf, Thursday, 21 July 2011 10:03 (fourteen years ago)
Microwave acceptable for making wee portions of scrambled egg without having to wash a frying pan, and for steaming veg. That is IT.
Anyway, back on topic (no pun intended). Mintolas. Like a cross between Munchies and After Eights. Could only eat about three before feeling sick though.

Microwaves are for reheating leftover curries.

And other home-cooked meals e.g. pasta glop. Not the pasta y'unnerstan, just the sauce.
― ledge, Thursday, 21 July 2011 10:09 (fourteen years ago)
oh aye, leftover curries. Doing just that on Sunday was the last time I used my microwave.
― ailsa, Thursday, 21 July 2011 10:11 (fourteen years ago)
Porridge in the mornings = microwave.
― Mark G, Thursday, 21 July 2011 10:13 (fourteen years ago)
i'd sooner eat one of those mini microwave pizzas than a rustlers burger. mind you, rustlers have been keeping bachelors in skinny jeans since at least the early 2000s.

Although I guess it doesn't count as you still have to get the pasta separately and boil it in a saucepan.

Cadbury's Top Deck silently disappeared a few years ago. It was like eating a 200g bar of Kinder Egg, and I miss it dearly.
Other fairly recent, short lived ones: Kit Kat Chunky Peanut Butter (seconded many xposts), Fajita Pot Noodles, Thai Green Curry Pringles (these lasted about 3 months).
I also loved Spira's - the stale chocolatey air inside them totally made them the best tasting chocolate.
Nik Naks changed, and were never the same. They used to be really dense and really strongly flavoured and were amazing.
― CraigG, Thursday, 21 July 2011 11:43 (fourteen years ago)
Also, in addition to Irn Bru bars, you used to be able to get packs of Irn Bru Chews, where they were kinda like more rectangular, Irn Bru flavoured Chewits.
― CraigG, Thursday, 21 July 2011 11:45 (fourteen years ago)
Ooh, Top Deck shandy!

Toffypops have to be the worst
because if we extend this to Ireland, I need to mention lemon Cornettoes.
― gyac, Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:03 (fourteen years ago)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gTUshlWFG0Great stuff, tasted completely artificial and over the top when it first came out. In the late 80's it was changed to be slightly more subtle.
― Servants of the SBankh (snoball), Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:07 (fourteen years ago)
A Lemon Cornetto sounds NICE. Refreshing. Though yeah I can't remember ever having one.
― kraudive, Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:08 (fourteen years ago)

but then again, my tea tonight has some cheese stuffed crust. What do I know?
― kraudive, Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:10 (fourteen years ago)
they were lovely, though I haven't had one in about 18 years so am almost certainly remembering them as better than they were.
― gyac, Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:16 (fourteen years ago)
Oh I see. I thought you were saying they were as worst as Toffypops. (Which I don't remember)
― kraudive, Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:24 (fourteen years ago)
There used to be a Tutti Frutti Cornetto as well iirc
― Number None, Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:28 (fourteen years ago)
Always got these in the same place as those fish & chips biscuits (a shop called 'Alfie's Bargains' iirc, also sold fake Mars Bars):http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-snc4/41567_127537490614641_7383_n.jpg
― kinder, Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:41 (fourteen years ago)
there were two types of fish and chips crisps. there were the superior biscuity ones, which were supposed to be a kind of fishy salt and vinegar i guess although i swear they did do other flavours occasionally, e.g. chicken, altho still fish shaped. the other type had these greasy, 3d latticework fish, and were unpleasant. i tried to find some photo evidence of these to back up my unsatisfactory description but failed. however, in the process i was reminded of smokey bacon piglets, so the overall effort was a success.
― Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:52 (fourteen years ago)
when cornettos first came out we sang the advert tune with revised lyrics:
Just one CornettoGeev eet to meYou greedy bastardThey're 50p
― graveshitwave (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:58 (fourteen years ago)
Toffypops were great! King of the biscuits you used to occasionally get at school. Getting a toffypop rather those pink cardboard abominations (or worse, a fig roll) was a cause for celebration.
That Cornetto lyric revision was a Little and Large sketch iirc. Except 'you must be joking' rather than greedy bastard (we used to sing that too)
― ailsa, Thursday, 21 July 2011 18:05 (fourteen years ago)
In fact, I think the extortionate cost was 40p.
― ailsa, Thursday, 21 July 2011 18:06 (fourteen years ago)
40p was a lot of money back when a bag of Snaps was 2 and a half p

Not discontinued but I never see them any more: the sandwich van which visits my work recently started having Roysters t-bone steak crisps, which I had not seen in at least a decade, but then they stopped again and now I have cravings
no other crisp is quite so... powdery
I mean I can't really think of a single positive-sounding thing to say about them but sometimes they're just what you need, y'know?
― the ascent of nyan (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 21 July 2011 20:14 (fourteen years ago)

I miss the Burton's snacks - Potato Puffs, Fish'n'Chips and Chicken'n'Chips. My dad worked for AB Foods and used to occasionally bring home boxes of them so it's pure nostalgia for me. Also Olivers bread which was a chain bakery that I don't think exists anymore. They used to have really good crusty rolls with poppy seeds on them.
